</excerpt>

Byelections in Punjab and Kerala are crucial for Priyanka Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal’s political futures.

NEW DELHI: The results of byelections for two seats in Punjab and Kerala have become very important for two prominent leaders— Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Priyanka has invested considerable effort to win the Nilambur seat in Kerala. She personally campaigned there.

Nilambur falls under her parliamentary constituency, Wayanad. Therefore, Priyanka has taken no chances and worked hard to ensure her party’s victory in this byelection, hoping to create a favourable atmosphere ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled eight months later. The byelection was held due to the resignation of P.V. Anwar of the ruling Left alliance. Anwar contested again with the support of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Although the Left won this seat in the previous election, Kerala’s political landscape has changed significantly over the last four years.

The BJP’s support base has increased, and the party is contesting strongly. Priyanka, the second most powerful Congress leader, was elected MP from Wayanad, succeeding her brother Rahul Gandhi. The involvement of TMC has further added intrigue to the Nilambur contest. The main battle is between Congress and the Left, but the result will reveal the real political strength of the parties. The byelection results will be announced on Monday. Priyanka understands that a loss would invite criticism against her leadership, which is why she actively campaigned to ensure her candidate’s victory. There is no doubt that a win will revive Congress’s morale, as the party has faced continuous setbacks in the last two Kerala elections and desperately needs a victory.

On the other hand, a win is equally important for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as this seat has traditionally been a Left stronghold. In Punjab, the political future of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal is at stake in the Ludhiana West seat byelection. After AAP lost the Delhi elections, the party declared Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora as its candidate for this seat. Arora has also been assured a ministerial post in the Punjab government once he wins. The party’s strategy is to have Kejriwal contest the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by Arora’s resignation, allowing him to begin his political second innings from the upper house.

Arora is a prominent industrialist, and the party has taken good care of him. In exchange for the Rajya Sabha seat, he will receive a ministerial post. To secure Kejriwal’s future, the AAP and the Mann government have put in all efforts to ensure victory. Decisions like forcibly ending the farmers’ movement were taken to appease traders. Kejriwal has remained forceful in his approach. However, the contest is multi-cornered. Congress, BJP, and Akali Dal are all putting in their best efforts to challenge AAP.

There are two key interests in the election results: whether AAP can win the seat and who will become the secondlargest party. Typically, the ruling party does not win byelections. If AAP fails to win, it will not only complicate the Mann government’s situation but also put Kejriwal’s political future in doubt. Regarding the second position, sources say BJP’s vigorous campaign might surprise many.

Even if BJP does not win, becoming the second-largest party would be a significant achievement. The party deployed two chief ministers and several senior leaders for campaigning. With Punjab elections scheduled in two years, a strong BJP performance will boost the party’s morale. Now, it remains to be seen which way the voters of Ludhiana West lean. On the result day, June 23, it will become clear whether Kejriwal celebrates or another party emerges victorious.

</excerpt>

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is currently focused on improving the party organisation through the Organisation Creation Campaign. However, the biggest question within the party is how the organisation can be strengthened at the lower levels without any change at the top. Despite continuous electoral defeats, no big leader has been held responsible so far.

Actually, Rahul is running this campaign based on suggestions from his sister, Priyanka Gandhi. Under this campaign, new district presidents are to be appointed. However, sources say that Priyanka wanted to handle this task herself, but the party did not give her the opportunity. As a result, Priyanka has limited her role these days.

As part of this campaign, Rahul has held meetings and discussions with leaders from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. He plans to visit other states for further discussions. The effort is to strengthen the Congress organisation from the grassroots level to the centre.

After continuous defeats, the party has taken up the task of organisational strengthening. A key issue arising from these meetings is how to deal with internal conflicts and identify BJP-supporting leaders within the party.

In Madhya Pradesh, Rahul caused some resentment by referring to certain leaders as “fast running,” “shadi wala,” and “lame horse.” Senior leaders expressed displeasure at these remarks, which could harm the party in the future. Some leaders might even switch parties to secure their positions. Many of Rahul’s close associates have already left the party and joined the BJP.

By using the term “lame horse,” Rahul seemed to target senior, aged leaders indirectly. Whatever his intentions, social media has started a campaign nationwide that harms Congress’s image.

Take Madhya Pradesh as an example. The party’s condition there is worrying. The current team was completely unsuccessful in the Lok Sabha elections and did not win a single seat. It remains to be seen whether Rahul will replace state president Jitu Patwari and legislative party leader Umang Singhar or continue with them.

A major question is where Rahul places leaders like former Chief Ministers Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh. Both wield significant influence across the state and have supported the Gandhi family in both good and bad times.

Kamal Nath is particularly known for his support. Both leaders remain politically active.

Whatever is happening on social media following Rahul’s statement, it appears that Congress is facing setbacks. His remarks in Bhopal have caused disappointment among senior Congress leaders across the country. Now, the issue of selecting district presidents has come up. Observers sent from Delhi are choosing the district presidents, raising another question: When the party elected district presidents through organisational elections just two and a half years ago, on what basis will they be removed now?

When observers from Delhi will selects district presidents, why would they listen to state leaders? This has prevented the party from making decisions in states like Gujarat, which was supposed to be the first for organisational change. The situation in Gujarat mirrors that of Madhya Pradesh.

In Haryana, Rahul made former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Kumari Selja meet face to face, but the question remains whether the party will sideline Hooda.

During the meeting, Hooda spoke openly, saying, “Everybody takes credit for victory, but no one for defeat.”

Rahul responded by saying, “I am the father of the party, so the responsibility for defeat is also mine.”

Under Rahul’s leadership, the party has lost three Lok Sabha and dozens of state elections, but no one has been held accountable. All office bearers remain in their positions. The discussion within the party is that without action against top leaders, how can the organisation strengthen at the lower levels?

Rahul talks big, but where will he find leaders recognised beyond their districts and states? Trusting inexperienced leaders during such difficult times is challenging. Making the organisation efficient is a huge task for Rahul. When responsibility is not fixed at the top level, changes at the lower levels will achieve little.

He was accompanied by his wife and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
</excerpt>

Entrepreneur Robert Vadra arrived at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) headquarters for the second day running on Wednesday for questioning in the case of money laundering in regard to a 2008 Haryana land transaction. His wife and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joined him, providing reassurance before he walked into the ED headquarters following a tight hug with her.

ED Questions Robert Vadra in 2008 Land Deal Case

Vadra, the brother-in-law of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, is under investigation for a land transaction in Manesar-Shikohpur (now sector 83) in Gurugram. The ED is recording his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

On Tuesday, officials questioned Vadra for around five hours. He appeared again on Wednesday as part of the ongoing probe.

The probe surrounds a 3.5-acre land transaction in February 2008 between Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd, in which Vadra was a director at one time, and a company. The company had acquired land from Onkareshwar Properties for ₹7.5 crore. In September 2012, the 3.53-acre land was sold by Skylight to real estate conglomerate DLF for ₹58 crore.

During the original transaction, the state was in the grip of a Congress-majority government led by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Ashok Khemka’s Intervention Led to Scrutiny

The transaction was rendered controversial in October 2012 when IAS officer Ashok Khemka, Director General of Land Consolidation and Land Records-cum-Inspector General of Registration for Haryana at the time, revoked the mutation of the land. He indicated a violation of the State Consolidation Act and a lapse of procedure. His move sent the transaction under national scrutiny and elicited calls for more stringent inquiry.

It was in 2018 when the Haryana Police filed an FIR to bring the formal probe on the deal.

Robert Vadra Terms Probe “Political Vendetta”

Robert Vadra, who has always claimed to be innocent, termed the ED action politically motivated. “I have always been cooperative with the investigative agencies and have provided the humongous amount of documents,” he said, adding, “There has to be a closure to cases which are as old as 20 years.”

The probe is ongoing as the ED is scrutinizing financial transactions involved in the land transaction.

</excerpt>

After causing a stir in Parliament with her handbag featuring the word “Palestine,” Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has once again made headlines. This time, she arrived with a new bag carrying a slogan urging support for the oppressed minorities in Bangladesh. The bag read, “Stand with Bangladeshi Hindus and Christians,” referencing the recent attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh, particularly after the political upheaval earlier this year.

A Continued Statement of Support for Minorities

Priyanka Gandhi’s bold accessory choice sparked not just conversation but also inspired other Opposition MPs to follow suit and carry similar bags in protest. During her address in the Lok Sabha, she raised her concerns over the treatment of Hindus and Christians in Bangladesh, urging the Indian government to intervene diplomatically.

She stated, “The government should raise the issue of atrocities on minorities, both Hindus and Christians, in Bangladesh. We should discuss this with the Bangladesh government and support those who are in pain.”

Reactions to Priyanka’s Political Bags

The handbag debate began a day earlier, when Priyanka Gandhi’s “Palestine” bag, which also featured a watermelon symbol—a common gesture of solidarity with Palestinians—was criticised by the ruling BJP. The bag, seen as a political statement, triggered sharp reactions, with BJP leaders accusing her of prioritising foreign concerns over domestic issues.

BJP MP Thakur criticised her, questioning why she was silent on the issue of Bangladeshi Hindus, and highlighting that MPs are elected to raise the concerns of Indian citizens. BJP’s Amit Malviya accused Priyanka Gandhi of “communal virtue signalling” through her accessories.

Priyanka Responds to Critics

Priyanka Gandhi responded strongly to her critics, dismissing accusations of communal posturing and questioning who would decide what she wears. She emphasised, “I will wear what I want. If you want to do something about the atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh, talk to the Bangladesh government and not say stupid things.”

The 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War: A Historical Context

Drawing a historical parallel, Priyanka Gandhi recalled India’s intervention during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, led by her grandmother, Indira Gandhi. She spoke about the principles that guided India’s involvement in that conflict, stressing the fight for democracy and against atrocities. “Indira ji did, our army did, and our people stood up,” she said, drawing attention to India’s pivotal role in Bangladesh’s independence.

India’s Stance on Palestine and Bangladesh

India has consistently advocated for a two-state solution regarding Palestine, calling for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed this stance in Parliament, while the country has also extended humanitarian aid to Palestine amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

Meanwhile, India shares close ties with Bangladesh, but the reported attacks on minorities following political instability have raised alarms. Priyanka Gandhi’s call for action aims to bring attention to these issues, highlighting the need for India to stand firm in supporting minority rights globally.

Political Symbolism and Diplomatic Calls for Action

Priyanka Gandhi’s handbag controversy has sparked a larger discussion on the role of India in international diplomacy, particularly regarding minority rights. While the bags may symbolise political stances, they also highlight the urgent need for international dialogue and support for vulnerable communities. As the debate continues, her actions have underscored the intersection of politics, symbolism, and advocacy in contemporary India.

While the international community condemned the attacks by Hamas, the situation soon evolved into a humanitarian crisis, drawing global attention to the plight of Palestinian citizens. Many people worldwide have expressed solidarity with Palestinians amidst the ongoing conflict.

</excerpt>

Opposition MPs from Kerala, including Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest at the Makar Dwar of Parliament, demanding a relief package for the landslide-affected Wayanad.
Priyanka Gandhi, Congress General Secretary and party MP KC Venugopal, and CPI(M) MP John Brittas among others were seen holding banners that read “Justice for Wayanad. Provide relief package for Wayanad” and “Wayanad ko nyay do, bedbav na karein” (Justice to Wayanad, there should be no discrimination).
Speaking to reporters during the protest, Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged that the central government is refusing to give a special package to Wayanad, adding that there should be “no discrimination” during natural disasters.
“The government is refusing to give a special package to Wayanad. We have requested the Home Minister and we have written to the Prime Minister. Himachal Pradesh has also seen similar large-scale devastation and there is a Congress government there. They are seeking help from the Centre and yet in both cases, the Central government is denying the victims their due because of politics. They are citizens of India. There should be no discrimination during natural disasters,” the Wayanad MP said.
Earlier on December 3, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and MPs from Kerala met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and urged the Centre to provide immediate relief to landslide-affected people of Wayanad.
Priyanka urged the Home Minister to urgently consider releasing the required funds to support the rehabilitation efforts considering the severity of the disaster.
The Congress leader said a large area had been affected, so many people have been killed, with some families wiped out completely.
On July 30, the state of Kerala was hit with a landslide, the deadliest one in the state, killing more than 300 people and destroying numerous houses and other buildings. The people were affected in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas.
During his visit to Wayanad, PM Modi undertook an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas before physically visiting the location of the disaster to review relief and rehabilitation efforts in the region.

</excerpt>

Congress leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who were en route to violence-affected Sambhal, have been stopped at the Ghazipur border on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
Barricades were placed across the road, bringing traffic to a standstill as the Congress leaders’ convoy reached the border.
SP MP Ram Gopal Yadav reacted to LoP Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Sambhal and said, “Our party was already going there and they too were not allowed. They (Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders) are going only now.”
Meanwhile, the security has been heightened at the border as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to visit violence-hit Sambhal, resulting in massive traffic snarl at the Ghazipur border on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
Earlier today, Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu said that Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi will surely visit the violence-hit Sambhal and meet the families of the victims, and will raise their voices in the Parliament.
“Why is the Government stopping us? What are they trying to hide, what are they scared of? Being the Leader of the Opposition, he has the right to see what is going on in the country. The incident that took place in Sambhal is highly condemnable. People have been killed. Who is responsible? If the LoP does not visit the site, how will he keep the issue in the Parliament? We want to see the situation in Sambhal but why is the Government stopping us? Isn’t this a dictatorship? Rahul Gandhi will surely visit Sambhal and meet the families of the victims,” Lallu told ANI.
The violence in Sambhal district erupted on November 24 during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) examination of a Mughal-era mosque. The clashes resulted in four fatalities and multiple injuries among police personnel and locals.
The ASI survey followed a petition filed in a local court, claiming that the mosque’s site was originally a Harihar temple.

In a video shared by the Congress on X, Rahul can be heard saying, “Let me also click one,” prompting laughter from those around. Another clip shows Rahul asking Priyanka to step back for the perfect shot while others made way. Like a doting brother, he even showed her the clicked photos, capturing a joyful moment between the siblings.

The Kasavu saree, widely considered the cultural attire of Kerala, represents the strength and grace of Malayali women. It is central to important celebrations like Onam and other festive occasions. With its distinctive combination of white and gold, the saree is also associated with Kerala’s classical dance form, Mohiniyattam, further deepening its place in the state’s vibrant cultural fabric.

White and Gold Kasavu Sarees Symbolize…

The white and gold Kasavu saree holds profound significance in Kerala’s culture, particularly during the festival of Onam. The white color symbolizes purity, peace, and unity, reflecting the state’s diverse traditions. The understated elegance of the white saree mirrors Kerala’s natural beauty, representing the calm and harmonious spirit of its people. The golden borders add a sense of richness, signifying prosperity and celebration, making the Kasavu saree not just an outfit but a timeless expression of cultural pride.

The tradition of wearing white and gold is not exclusive to women in Kerala but extends to men as well. Men often wear mundus or dhotis, also edged with golden borders, showing respect for Kerala’s long-standing traditions and craftsmanship. These garments, typically worn during festivals like Onam, highlight the simplicity and grandeur of Kerala’s cultural legacy.

Kasavu Sarees: A Testament to Heritage

Kasavu sarees are an integral part of Kerala’s cultural identity, having evolved over centuries while retaining their traditional charm. Historically, these sarees were woven with pure gold threads, though modern versions now incorporate a blend of gold and copper-coated silver threads to make them more affordable.

The process of creating a Kasavu saree is labor-intensive and requires remarkable skill. Simple patterns can take three to five days to weave, while more intricate designs—often made for weddings—can take up to a month. The saree’s white base is said to symbolize Kerala’s untouched natural beauty, while the gold borders evoke the brilliant hues of the state’s golden sunsets. Depending on the complexity of the design and materials used, the price of a Kasavu saree can vary, making it not only a cultural treasure but also an artistic one.

Rahul Gandhi’s Decision Paves the Way for Priyanka

The bypoll was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi, who had won from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the 2024 general elections, chose to retain Rae Bareli. Wayanad, known as a Congress bastion, saw Priyanka Gandhi emerge victorious against BJP’s Navya Haridas and CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri.

Contesting as a United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, Priyanka garnered 6,22,338 votes in Wayanad. Though her total votes were slightly lower than Rahul’s 6,47,445 in April, her victory margin of 4,10,931 votes exceeded his earlier lead of 3,64,422.

Family Legacy in Parliament

With Priyanka’s entry, all three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family are now part of India’s legislative system. While Sonia Gandhi serves as a Rajya Sabha member representing Rajasthan, Rahul Gandhi holds the role of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Priyanka’s maiden victory reflects her growing influence in Congress and sets the stage for her active participation in national politics.

Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan Wins Nanded Seat

In another Congress win, Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan claimed victory in the Nanded Lok Sabha bypoll, securing 5,86,788 votes. This election was held following the death of sitting MP Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.

Priyanka Gandhi’s successful debut underscores Congress’s continued relevance in key constituencies and highlights her role as a pivotal player in the party’s future strategies.

</excerpt>

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was leading a roadshow in Nagpur, Maharashtra, yesterday when a group of BJP supporters waved party flags from atop a building. Responding with a smile, Ms. Gandhi Vadra wished them good luck for the Assembly elections scheduled for Wednesday. However, she added a parting remark, asserting that the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance—comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the NCP’s Sharad Pawar faction—would emerge victorious in the polls.

Nagpur, considered a BJP stronghold, is home to the headquarters of the party’s ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The Nagpur Lok Sabha seat has been held by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari since 2014, with the BJP currently controlling four of the city’s six Assembly segments.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, contesting her first election in the Wayanad bypoll, led a roadshow in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on the final day of campaigning for the November 20 Assembly polls. The roadshow, which drew a large crowd, passed through the Nagpur West and Nagpur Central constituencies. Nagpur West is currently held by the Congress, while Nagpur Central has been with the BJP since 2009.

As her campaign vehicle made its way through the streets, Ms. Gandhi Vadra waved to supporters gathered on roadsides and rooftops. Towards the end of the rally, a group of people waving BJP flags and chanting slogans appeared on a building along the route. Congress supporters responded with their own slogans. Addressing the BJP supporters through a microphone, Ms. Gandhi Vadra said, “Friends in the BJP, wish you all the best for the election. But it is the Maha Vikas Aghadi that will win.” Her remark was met with loud cheers from Congress supporters.

According to a PTI report, tensions arose when Congress candidate for Nagpur Central, Bunty Shelke, and BJP supporters engaged in a heated exchange after the roadshow. Local police intervened and ensured the situation did not escalate further.

Maharashtra will head to polls on Wednesday in a closely watched electoral battle. In the previous Assembly election, the NDA alliance of the BJP and the undivided Shiv Sena secured a landslide victory, winning 161 of the 288 seats. However, their alliance broke down over a disagreement on rotational Chief Ministership. This led to Uddhav Thackeray forging an alliance with Congress and Sharad Pawar’s NCP to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

The MVA government collapsed in 2022 when Eknath Shinde led a revolt that split the Shiv Sena. Shinde’s faction allied with the BJP, while Ajit Pawar’s subsequent rebellion divided the NCP. Ajit Pawar joined the ruling coalition, placing the Shiv Sena and NCP factions on opposing sides in this election, which has become a high-stakes contest.

In the Lok Sabha election earlier this year, the Opposition bloc of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) achieved a significant victory, winning 30 out of Maharashtra’s 48 seats. The Mahayuti alliance secured 17. The Maha Vikas Aghadi is now aiming for a decisive win in the Assembly polls, while the Mahayuti is determined to recover from its Lok Sabha losses.

</excerpt>

In a rally ahead of the Wayanad bypoll, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi issued a challenge to his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, urging her to transform Wayanad into a premier tourist destination. Speaking at Sultan Bathery, Rahul Gandhi campaigned for Priyanka, the Congress candidate, who is making her electoral debut in this key election.

Rahul Gandhi’s Emotional Appeal to Wayanad Voters

Rahul Gandhi, who previously represented Wayanad in the Lok Sabha, addressed the gathering with an emotional appeal, emphasizing his deep connection with the constituency. Although he retained the Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh after the general election, he vacated the Wayanad seat, necessitating the November 13 bypoll. The contest pits Priyanka Gandhi against the Left front’s Sathyan Mokeri and the BJP’s Navya Haridas.

In a public meeting, Rahul Gandhi said, “Priyanka Gandhi ji is the MP candidate. She is also my little sister, so I have the right to complain about her to the people of Wayanad. Wayanad owns a huge place in my heart that is beyond politics. I’m here to help everyone at any time. If I can show its beauty to the rest of the world, I will happily do it.”

Rahul Gandhi’s challenge to Priyanka was clear: make Wayanad the top tourist destination in Kerala. He urged his sister to boost the local economy by enhancing tourism, which would showcase Wayanad’s natural beauty on a global stage.

He stated, “I challenge my sister to make Wayanad the best tourist destination. When people think of Kerala, the first destination should be Wayanad. This will benefit the people of Wayanad and boost its economy, allowing the world to see its beauty.”

Reflecting on his tenure as Wayanad’s MP, Rahul Gandhi expressed gratitude to the people for teaching him the importance of love in politics. He remarked, “The people of Wayanad taught me that love has an important place in politics. I did not use that word, but they showed me its value. Love and affection are the only weapons that can combat hatred and anger.”

A High-Stakes Contest for Congress

Priyanka Gandhi’s candidacy marks a significant moment for the Congress as she steps into a direct electoral contest for the first time. The bypoll is being closely watched, with the constituency previously held by Rahul Gandhi, adding pressure for a strong performance by the Congress. The entry of Priyanka into the electoral arena has already sparked excitement among party supporters and is seen as a strategic move to bolster Congress’s standing in Kerala.

With the bypoll just days away, Rahul Gandhi’s challenge to Priyanka and his emotional appeal to the voters of Wayanad set the stage for a spirited campaign, highlighting the party’s efforts to connect deeply with the local populace while projecting a positive vision for the future of the constituency.

She asserted that both sectors are crucial for Wayanad’s economic progress and that efforts should be directed towards improving farmers’ livelihoods and creating more opportunities in these areas. “I believe our focus should be on food processing, supporting farmers, and promoting tourism,” she stated, adding that these initiatives could greatly enhance Wayanad’s future prospects.

Continuing Rahul Gandhi’s Efforts

Priyanka Gandhi pledged to carry forward the work initiated by Rahul Gandhi, who previously represented Wayanad in the Lok Sabha. She emphasized her commitment to addressing the issues he has championed and promised to continue his advocacy for the region’s welfare.

Speaking to ANI, Priyanka expressed her gratitude to the people of Wayanad for their support and assured them she would not let them down. She stressed that Wayanad has significant scope for development in agriculture, especially in food processing and marketing, and pledged to focus on these areas to create substantial impact.

Priyanka also highlighted the potential for tourism in Wayanad, noting the presence of cultural and religious sites, including mosques, temples, and churches, that could attract visitors. She called for improved infrastructure to unlock this potential, emphasizing that tourism could play a vital role in the region’s economic growth. She praised Wayanad’s diverse community, which she described as living harmoniously and upholding unity and constitutional values, and expressed deep honor in the prospect of representing the constituency.

Upcoming Contest for Wayanad Seat

The by-poll for Wayanad, a traditional Congress stronghold, will see Priyanka Gandhi contest against BJP’s Navya Haridas and Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate Sathyan Mokeri. This election was prompted by Rahul Gandhi’s decision to retain his Rae Bareli seat after winning both constituencies in the recent general elections. The Wayanad by-election is set for November 13.

</excerpt>

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra recently shared a touching story about Mother Teresa while campaigning in Wayanad, Kerala. During an election meeting, she recounted how the revered figure visited her home months after the assassination of her father, Rajiv Gandhi, urging her to dedicate herself to helping the needy.

“I want to say how grateful I am for the love I am getting here. A few days ago, I came to file a nomination paper. When I arrived, I stopped and talked to people, one of them was from the Army… he said that his mother wanted to meet me, but she couldn’t walk, so I walked to his house… She hugged me as if I was her child. I can truthfully tell you I did not feel any difference between my mother and her… I felt like I had a mother here in Wayanad. That is how you made me feel,” Priyanka expressed at the gathering. Priyanka Gandhi was moved by Mother Teresa’s influence and subsequently engaged with her organization. “When she handed me a rosary (to give to my mother), I felt how I felt when I was 19 years old. My father had just died, 6-7 months later, Mother Teresa came to my house to meet my mother. I had a fever, so I didn’t go out of the room. She came to the room and put her hand on my head. She took my hand and put a rosary in my hand just like this. She asked me to work with her. After 5-6 years, I went to work with her sisters. My job was to teach kids… We cleaned bathrooms, and cooked food. I began to understand their pain, what service means, and how a community can support them. I saw how the community helped each other during a landslide in Wayanad. Each one of you helped… It made me proud, you are courageous people,” she shared.

Priyanka criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging he favors his “friends” with policies. Rahul Gandhi, her brother, praised Priyanka for caring for their mother, Sonia Gandhi, after their father’s death.

“My mother is sitting here. After my father died, it was my sister who looked after my mother. She was 17 years old when Papa died; my mother lost everything; my sister lost everything, but my sister looked after my mother,” he said.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is running for Congress in the Wayanad by-polls, a seat previously held by Rahul Gandhi, who won from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli.

</excerpt>

Priyanka Gandhi is confident of her victory from Wayanad. In the past, she has often leaned on Lord Krishna who had said, “The meaning of Karma is in the intention. The intention behind the action is what matters. Those who are motivated only by desire for the fruits of action are miserable, for they are constantly anxious about the results of what they do.”
Temperamentally, Priyanka is more on uncle Sanjay Gandhi mould with her spontaneity, risk taking ability and reliance on a core team. Since joining formal politics in 2019, Priyanka has not been shying from putting her credibility at stake time and again. At Wayanad, she is in the electoral fray for the first time generating a lot of interest within and outside the Congress Parivar. The outcome of Wayanad and Priyanka’s victory margin would be closely watched in the Congress circles.
Priyanka has been a central piece in the Congress politics and often seen functioning from 10, Janpath. Old timers recalled how the year 2019 had, in fact, begun on a promising note for the Congress. It had won assembly elections held in the previous year in three states — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh — giving the party something to cheer about. On January 24, 2019, the Congress had formally inducted Priyanka as an All-India Congress Committee general secretary. She was dubbed a “game changer” and a “brahmastra” by her party colleagues and a section of the media.
Congress workers were upbeat. This was the moment they had been waiting for so long. But other forces were at play too. Just as Priyanka was set to hold her first press conference in Lucknow on February 14, 2019, a convoy of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force came under attack in Jammu and Kashmir, leaving over 40 troopers dead.
The response would come on February 26, 2024 The announcement of general elections was on the cards when the Indian Air Force struck deep inside Pakistan, destroying a terrorist camp in Balakot. India had struck back within a fortnight. Prime minister Narendra Modi was seen as a man of action who had dared to get even with Pakistan without caring for international opinion or repercussions. The “Ghar mein ghus kar mara” narrative brought a great deal of satisfaction and pride to Indian citizens across the country.
For days, Priyanka struggled to come out and pick up the threads to launch her poll campaign. By the time the 2019 general elections concluded, the Modi-led BJP had won another decisive mandate. The Congress finished with a paltry tally of 52 of the 543 parliamentary seats where elections were held. Both in 2019 and in 2024 general elections, she had toyed with the idea of contesting against Modi — and then backed out.
Congress insiders insist that Priyanka was keen to contest from Varanasi but Rahul and Sonia vetoed the idea, saying it would not be prudent to start her political career with a defeat. Apparently, the party’s in-house surveys had shown that Modi was unbeatable in Varanasi and Priyanka deferred to her family’s decision.
Another obvious problem with Priyanka is that she has always had too much on her platter. The AICC general secretary is expected to be constantly on a firefighting mission. In Punjab, she was seen as Navjyot Singh Sidhu supporter while in Rajasthan, Sachin Pilot is seen as Priyanka’s preferred choice. Priyanka is also expected to be a social media warrior, pro-active on Twitter, and use 24×7 television news to her advantage to take on the combined might of the highly skilled and resourceful BJP.
A cursory look at Priyanka’s life explains why she is considered a harbinger of hope and promise, at least within Congress circles. In 1999, she had on her own demolished Arun Nehru, a close relative and former Congressman turned BJP nominee, who was pitted against the Nehru-Gandhi family retainer, Capt. Satish Sharma.
In India’s 78 years since independence, the Nehru-Gandhis have led the Congress for 59 years. Congressmen of all hues and shades look up to the family as unquestionable leaders and, in return, expect electoral success. From Jawaharlal Nehru to Indira, Rajiv and Sonia, no member of the Nehru-Gandhi family has failed or abruptly opted out of politics. As a result, Congress leaders blindly follow them and do not wish to look beyond the Gandhis. It is now up to Priyanka Gandhi to deal with this perception — some call it an illusion of grandeur and prove the political instincts of Congress activists right. Would November 23, 2024 reinforce that perception once again?

Confidence in Priyanka’s Candidature

Expressing confidence in Priyanka’s ability to represent Wayanad effectively, Rahul Gandhi stated on X, “The people of Wayanad hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t imagine a better representative for them than my sister, Priyanka Gandhi. I’m confident she will be a passionate champion of Wayanad’s needs and a powerful voice in Parliament.” He also emphasized the importance of the collective efforts of the Congress and its allies in protecting the Constitution and democracy.

On Monday, Priyanka Gandhi met with Kharge in Delhi to strategize for the campaign leading up to the by-elections, which are scheduled for November 13. She will lead a roadshow from Kalpetta New Bus Stand on Wednesday morning before filing her nomination later in the day.

This by-election marks Priyanka Gandhi’s electoral debut after five years of active political involvement. If she secures victory, she will become the third member of the Gandhi family to serve in Parliament, following in the footsteps of her brother Rahul Gandhi and their mother Sonia Gandhi. She faces competition from Navya Haridas of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sathyan Mokeri from the Left Democratic Front (LDF), with Haridas being a two-time Kozhikode Corporation councillor.

As part of her campaign efforts, Congress has appointed Saral Patel as the media coordinator for Wayanad in preparation for the by-election.

</excerpt>

In a significant political contest shaping up in Kerala, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Navya Haridas as its candidate for the upcoming Wayanad Lok Sabha by-poll, where she will face off against Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. This election comes on the heels of Rahul Gandhi vacating the seat after choosing to retain his position in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli. With a background in engineering and a track record in local governance, Haridas aims to make a strong impression in this high-profile electoral battle, signaling a pivotal moment for the BJP in a region traditionally dominated by the Congress party. As the election date approaches, both candidates are gearing up for a fierce campaign to win over the voters of Wayanad.

Haridas’s assets are valued at ₹1,29,56,264, with total liabilities amounting to ₹1,64,978.

Navya Haridas vs. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra

Following Rahul Gandhi’s decision to retain his seat in Raebareli, the Congress party has fielded Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from Wayanad for her electoral debut. The party, under Mallikarjun Kharge’s leadership, is intensifying its campaign to surpass Rahul’s previous victory margin. Additionally, the Communist Party of India (CPI), a Congress ally in the opposition INDIA bloc, has nominated Sathyan Mokeri to contest against Priyanka.

Wayanad By-Poll Details

</excerpt>

The man who had hijacked an Indian airlines Lucknow-Delhi-Kolkata flight to protest against Morarji Desai government’s “vindictiveness” against Indira Gandhi died in Luckow last week professing to be a life-long Congressman.

Bhola Nath Pandey breathed last on Friday, August 23, 2024 aged, 71. Priyanka Gandhi condoled his death on twitter recalling his services and contribution to the grand old party.
On December 20, 1978, two young men, Bhola Nath Pandey and Devendra Pandey, had reportedly hijacked the Lucknow- Delhi-Kolkata Indian Airlines Flight 410. The Boeing 737 had 126 passengers on board, among them two former ministers of Indira Gandhi’s cabinet, Ashoke Sen and Dharam Bir Sinha. Barely 15 minutes before the plane was to touch down at Delhi, the hijackers had got up and moved towards the cockpit. Captain M.N. Battiwala was forced to abort landing in Delhi and head for Varanasi.

The Pandeys were not related but their hijacking bid was driven by their mutual admiration for Indira. They spoke about the “vindictiveness” of the Janata Party-led government and demanded the former Prime Minister’s immediate and unconditional release from jail. Both said they were Youth Congress members, a claim the then Uttar Pradesh Congress unit chief Mohsina Kidwai had denied vehemently.

December 20, 1978 was an important and difficult day for Indira and the Congress as the Lok Sabha had expelled the former Prime Minister from house membership on grounds of having repeatedly committed breach of privilege and contempt of the House. The decision to jail Indira had come at the end of a 15-hour tumultuous debate spread over several sittings since the December 8, 1978 winter session of parliament. The motion to expel Indira was carried by 279 votes in favour and 138 against while thirty-seven members abstained. Indira’s jail term was effective till the prorogation of the session. This was the first instance of a member of Parliament being sentenced to jail by the house.

Soon after her expulsion and dramatic exit from Parliament, Indira was arrested and taken to Tihar Jail where she was put in a barracks of her own – in the same cell complex that George Fernandes had occupied during the Emergency. Sonia used to bring Indira’s three meals a day from home.

The hijack drama had ended by the same evening after the aircraft landed at Varanasi, where the father of one of the hijackers spoke to his son over the wireless. The father’s voice reportedly shattered the bubble of heroism. The two men, who were not carrying any firearms or explosives, emerged from the aircraft shouting pro-Indira slogans and surrendered to the police.

While the hijack drama was still going on, a senior government official informed UPCC chief Mohsina Kidwai that the two hijackers had told the authorities they would release the plane only if she asked them to. Mohsina told the official she didn’t know the hijackers.

Since her name had come up, some legal luminaries advised her to apply for anticipatory bail. Mohsina would later write in her autobiography, “My Life in Indian Politics [HCI] that she did not have a law degree, but common sense came to her rescue. She had told her lawyers that an anticipatory bail plea might be seen as an admission of guilt and association with the hijackers. She remained firm in her decision. It saved her from endless rounds of court visits.

Bhola Pandey remained fiercely loyal to the Congress. When Indira returned to power in 1980, she gave him a party ticket to contest from the Ballia assembly seat which he won. In fact, Pandey was elected to the UP assembly again in 1989. Thrice he was given a Lok Sabha ticket by the Congress from Salempur but success eluded him. He also bagged the post of AICC secretary. Pandey was known for his aggressive, bold and uncompromising instances.

The images capture a beaming Sonia Gandhi holding Noorie in a dog backpack. In the first picture, Noorie is distracted, gazing away from the camera, while the second photo beautifully captures the pup looking straight ahead.

Since its upload, the post has garnered over 6.5 lakh likes, and the numbers continue to climb. The heartwarming share has prompted a wave of comments from followers.

One Instagram user commented, “This woman has shown such elegance through thick and thin! Please do post more of such images that give a glimpse of humanity in politicians! So so so needed!” Another added, “This has all my heart.” A third chimed in with, “Thank you for adopting an indie baby.” Many others responded with heart emojis.

Noorie came into the Gandhi family last year during Rahul’s trip to Goa. He brought the pup from a local family, flew her to Delhi, and surprised his mother with the new addition. Rahul also took to social media to introduce Noorie as the “newest member of their family.”

Significance of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, falls on August 19 this year. It is a traditional Hindu festival that honors the special relationship between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi, a ceremonial thread, around their brothers’ wrists, symbolizing a promise of protection and care. In return, brothers offer gifts as a token of their love and commitment.

BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP, Sudhanshu Trivedi, criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday for not transferring the investigation of the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital to the CBI. He also took aim at the leaders of the INDIA alliance, questioning the silence of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi on the matter.

Trivedi, speaking at a press conference in Delhi, stated, “The protection given to the criminals in the Kolkata incident is more tragic than the incident itself.” He pointed out that the reappointment of RG Kar’s Principal to another college within 24 hours raises suspicions about the state government’s investigation. “Why does the West Bengal CM have sympathy for that Principal?” he questioned.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee had mentioned that she would consider transferring the case to the central agency if no progress was made by Sunday. However, Trivedi demanded an immediate handover to the CBI, questioning, “Is it for manipulation? We’ve seen similar situations, like in the Sandeshkhali incident. Why isn’t this investigation being handed over to the country’s top investigative agency?”

Trivedi also criticized the opposition parties, accusing the INDI alliance of shielding criminals. He targeted Priyanka Gandhi, saying, “Where is Priyanka Gandhi, who said ‘Ladki Hun, Lad Sakti Hun’? She is silent on rape incidents from Ayodhya to Kolkata. And Rahul Gandhi, who talks about ‘Mohabbat Ki Dukaan,’ seems to show love only for criminals, terrorists, and corrupt individuals.”

The case in question involves the discovery of the body of a woman postgraduate trainee in a seminar hall at RG Kar College last Friday. A civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime. Following the incident, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the college’s principal, resigned but was quickly appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC). This appointment was met with opposition from many junior doctors and interns.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court ordered Dr. Ghosh to go on leave. The Chief Justice stated, “The principal of RG Kar College, Sandeep Ghosh, should go on leave today. Otherwise, I will issue an order for him.” The court also demanded that both Dr. Ghosh’s resignation letter from RG Kar Medical College and his appointment letter from National Medical College be presented together at 1 pm.

Hospital services across the state were disrupted as junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees continued their protest for the fourth consecutive day, calling for a magisterial inquiry into the doctor’s death.

</excerpt>

On Monday, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called on the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal to take decisive action and ensure justice in the case of a woman doctor’s alleged rape and murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The body of the postgraduate trainee, who was reportedly raped and murdered in a seminar hall at the hospital, was discovered on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime.

Junior doctors have been protesting for the fourth consecutive day, demanding swift punishment for those responsible, which has disrupted services in government hospitals across West Bengal.

In a Hindi post on X, Priyanka Gandhi remarked, “The incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College is heartbreaking.” She emphasized that women’s safety in the workplace is a significant issue in the country and stressed the need for concrete measures.

“I appeal to the state government to take immediate and strict action in this case and ensure justice to the victim’s family and fellow doctors,” Priyanka Gandhi added.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated on Monday that her government would transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police could not resolve the case by Sunday. She also expressed a desire for the case to be expedited in a fast-track court.

In response to the backlash over the incident at the state-run hospital, Principal Sandip Ghosh resigned from his position and government service on Monday, following demands from junior doctors for his removal due to inadequate security for staff.

</excerpt>

Dr. Aishwariya Pandit Sharma and Priya Sehgal, on their YouTube channel “Historically Speaking,” explore the leading candidates, their backgrounds, and what sets them apart in the race to lead India. The channel, known for its engaging discussions on politics and art, delves into the intersections of history, politics, and culture through interviews and analyses. It also explores how art reflects and shapes societal understanding.

In the book “The Contenders,” the author shares insights into why the title was chosen. With the help of Aishwarya and Karthik, they identified true contenders in politics. Published in 2019, the book focuses on leaders in their mid-40s to early 50s, highlighting their potential to lead India.

Watch:

The Contenders

Key political figures discussed include Akhilesh Yadav, who, unlike other dynasts, had to fight for his legacy against his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav. This struggle led to significant modernization efforts within his party. The book also examines Yogi Adityanath’s tenure as Chief Minister, marked by strict law and order reforms and a strong Hindutva stance.

Himanta Biswa Sarma’s political journey from Congress to becoming the Chief Minister of Assam under BJP is highlighted, emphasizing his insider knowledge and ambition. The Gandhi siblings, Rahul and Priyanka, are analyzed for their contrasting political styles, with Priyanka’s instinctive approach and Rahul’s calculated strategies.

Arvind Kejriwal’s shift from a strong national contender to focusing on Delhi amid legal troubles is also discussed. The book provides a comprehensive understanding of the evolving political landscape in India through meticulous research and personal insights.

</excerpt>

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed deep sorrow over the destruction caused by landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad during his visit to the area with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Reflecting on the tragedy, Gandhi likened his emotions to those he felt when his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, died in 1991.

“It is a terrible tragedy for Wayanad, for Kerala, and the nation. We have come here to see the situation. It is painful to see how many people have lost family members and their houses. We will try to help and make sure that the survivors get what is their due,” said Gandhi while addressing reporters. He emphasized the need for relocation and aid for the affected people and thanked the doctors, nurses, administration, and volunteers for their efforts.

The massive landslides that struck Mundakkai and Churalmala in Wayanad on July 30 caused extensive destruction, killing about 250 people and injuring over 200. Rescue teams are racing against time to trace the missing people.

During his interaction with reporters, Rahul Gandhi turned emotional, stating, “Today, I feel how I felt when my father (Rajiv Gandhi) died. Here, people have not just lost a father but an entire family. We all owe these people respect and affection.” He urged that no politics should be done and emphasized the need to prioritize aid and assistance to Wayanad. “I am not interested in politics right now. I am interested in the people of Wayanad,” he said.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed her brother’s sentiments, stating that the Congress party is there to offer as much comfort and support as possible. “We have spent the entire day meeting people who have suffered. It’s an immense tragedy. We can only imagine the kind of pain the people are enduring. We are here to offer as much comfort and support as possible,” she said. Priyanka also mentioned that there has been a similar tragedy in Himachal Pradesh and that they plan to convene to outline how they can assist, especially the children who have been left alone.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are expected to visit Kerala’s Wayanad, where massive landslides have resulted in 24 fatalities. Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal emphasized the need for unity, stating, “This is the hour of togetherness, we have to work together to ensure the safety of as many lives as possible. We are planning to go (to Wayanad). Yes, both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are planning to go.”

Venugopal mentioned that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has pledged full cooperation and that extensive rehabilitation efforts are already in progress. “It is very unfortunate and the saddest day for us. Tragedies have been occurring in Wayanad one after another. This morning we heard the saddest news. Since then, we have been trying to implement maximum-level rehabilitation and rescue measures with the help of the government and other agencies. I informed Rahul Gandhi, who immediately contacted the District Collector and then the Chief Minister. He offered full support to the Chief Minister if needed. He also spoke to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who assured full cooperation,” Venugopal said.

KC Venugopal and Congress MP Hibi Eden submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha in light of the tragedy, urging the central government to expedite rescue operations and provide all possible assistance to those affected. Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala stressed the importance of collective efforts to support the victims and their families and called for rescue operations to be conducted on a war footing. “It is a very tragic incident that happened in Wayanad at 3 am. I was told that more casualties were there. The rescue operations are ongoing. I talked to the MLA and other important leaders there, as well as the district administration. They are trying their best to rescue the people from that area,” Chennithala said to ANI.

Chennithala added, “There is no connectivity in this area, so the police, district administration, and everyone else are trying to get in touch with the stranded people. Everyone should come together to provide relief to these bereaved families, and rescue operations should be conducted on a war footing.”

Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh described the Wayanad landslide as a shocking incident, noting the significant loss of life and damage. He emphasized the severity of the situation, highlighting that one village was completely isolated and washed out. “The government of Kerala has initiated relief measures. The Government of India, Air Force, and NDRF are all present there, and the rescue operation has begun on a war footing,” Suresh said.

Kerala Minister Veena George reported on Tuesday that 24 bodies have been recovered following a series of massive landslides that struck the hilly areas of Meppadi in Wayanad in the early hours of July 30. She stated that NDRF and Civil Defence teams are on-site, with a Navy team expected to arrive soon. The landslide has impacted Meppadi, Mundakkal Town, and Chooralmala areas, and the state health minister confirmed that the government has dispatched rescue personnel, medical equipment, and health workers to Vythiri, Mananthawadi, Kalpetta, and Meppadi government hospitals.

The Kerala Chief Minister’s office announced that a control room has been set up to provide immediate relief and rescue assistance following the landslide in Chooralmala, Wayanad. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed prompt coordination of the rescue operations and announced that the entire government machinery is actively involved, with ministers overseeing and coordinating the efforts. A delegation of five ministers—Revenue Minister K Rajan, Public Works Minister Muhammad Riyaz, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Development Minister O R Kelu, Forest Minister K Saseendran, and Ports Minister Kadannapally Ramachandran—is being sent to the disaster-hit area, according to the Kerala CMO.

In a post on X, Priyanka Gandhi expressed her heartbreak over the deaths caused by waterlogging in the basement of the institute. She conveyed her condolences, saying, “I pray to God for the departed souls and the bereaved families.” She also highlighted a recent incident where a student died from an electric shock in Patel Nagar, emphasizing the severity of negligence and mismanagement that endangers the lives of students who come to the city to pursue their dreams.

Gandhi called for immediate action to rectify all illegal and life-threatening constructions housing students, labeling the situation as “criminal and irresponsible.” She insisted that accountability should be established and urged for the correction of any illegal or dangerous conditions in areas where students preparing for competitive exams reside.

On Sunday, Delhi police arrested two individuals, the owner and coordinator of the IAS coaching center, following the tragic deaths caused by basement flooding due to heavy rains. The victims were identified as Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh; Tanya Soni from Telangana; and Nivin Dalwin from Ernakulam, Kerala. This incident occurred just days after a UPSC aspirant was electrocuted on a waterlogged street in the national capital.

</excerpt>

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sparked a fiery debate as he accused BJP leaders of engaging in “violence and hate” under the guise of Hinduism, triggering strong reactions from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs.

Responding to the uproar, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, leaving the Parliament building with her mother Sonia Gandhi, defended her brother’s statement, clarifying that Rahul Gandhi’s criticism was directed at the BJP leadership, not Hindus in general. “He cannot insult Hindus. He said it very clearly. He talked about the BJP, he talked about BJP leaders,” Priyanka Gandhi asserted.

Rahul Gandhi’s speech, where he held up a picture of Lord Shiva and emphasized the values of fearlessness and non-violence, drew immediate objections from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demands for an apology from Home Minister Amit Shah.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju condemned Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on social media, stating, “I condemn Shri Rahul Gandhi Ji for terming Hindus as a violent, hateful and untruthful community. He can’t insult Hindus without any reasons.”

BJP leaders also criticized Rahul Gandhi’s comments harshly. G Kishan Reddy accused Gandhi of being in a state of depression and asserted that his speech targeted Hindus unfairly. “He said that Hindus are violent. The people of the country should understand this,” Reddy stated.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Tejashvi Surya called Rahul Gandhi’s remarks “shameful,” expressing disbelief at the level of animosity Gandhi displayed towards Hindus.

In defense of Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Rajeev Shukla clarified, “He said that the people of BJP, you call yourself Hindus but you do not follow Hinduism, we are all Hindus, we follow Hinduism. What Lord Shiva said, we follow it and you do not follow it, you do violence, you spread hatred, this is what he is saying to the people of the BJP.”

The controversy underscores the deep political divisions and sensitive religious sentiments in India’s parliamentary debates, highlighting the ongoing tension between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress party.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge alleged ‘criminal negligence’ and ‘corruption’ in IGI airport roof collapse incident. And also made of list of various incidents, which allegedly expose the claim of PM creating ‘World Class Infrastructure.’

Kharge also alleged, that this portion was inaugurated by PM Modi on March 10.

Taking to X he said,

“Corruption and criminal negligence are responsible for the collapse of shoddy infrastructure falling like a deck of cards, in the past 10 years of Modi Govt…Delhi Airport (T1) roof collapse, Jabalpur airport roof collapse, Abysmal condition of Ayodhya’s new roads, Ram Mandir leakage, Cracks in Mumbai Trans Harbour Link road, 13 new bridges falling in Bihar in 2023 & 2024, Pragati Maidan Tunnel submerging, Morbi bridge collapse tragedy in Gujarat, … are some stark instances which expose the tall claims by Modi ji and BJP of creating “World Class Infrastructure”!

Congress secretary Priyanka Gandhi also echoed similar arguments in hindi and questioned PM for taking responsibility of this incident saying, ‘This is the corrupt model of BJP of “take donations and give business” which has now been exposed. The question is whether the Prime Minister will take responsibility for these poor construction works and this corrupt model?’

What BJP Said?

Meanwhile, reacting to these allegations, BJP IT cell leader Amit Malviya claimed, that the portion of Delhi’s Terminal 1 roof was inaugurated in 2009, when UPA government was in power.

Taking to X, he said, ‘The part of T1 that collapsed was opened in 2009 when Congress-led UPA was in power. In those days there was no concept of quality check and contracts were given to whoever sent the biggest kickback to the ruling Congress. Sonia Gandhi, who was then the super PM, must answer.’

However, many netizens slammed Malviya for allegedly passing blame on others for their blunders.

One user said, ‘so what your government was doing in last 10 years, Quality Check 10 saal mein kyu nahi karaaya’

Another also said similar thing saying, Glad to see that BJP came to know this only after the collapse, otherwise they were busy where? Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas?

</excerpt>

During the ongoing session of the 18th Lok Sabha, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has raised concerns over the treatment of constitutional chants in Parliament. The issue arose during the swearing-in ceremony of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who concluded his oath with the exclamation “Jai Hind, Jai Samvidhaan” (Long live India, Long live Constitution). His invocation was echoed by opposition members, prompting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to intervene.

Speaker Birla, noting that MPs were already taking their oaths on the Constitution, reminded them of parliamentary decorum. This led to objections from Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda, who argued against the Speaker’s interference in the chant.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took to social media to criticize the incident, questioning the disparity in handling chants like “Jai Samvidhaan” compared to what she described as unparliamentary slogans from those in power. She expressed concerns about potential threats to the sanctity of the Constitution, emphasizing its pivotal role in parliamentary proceedings and citizen rights.

The controversy underscores broader tensions over parliamentary conduct and the role of opposition voices in the newly constituted Lok Sabha. As the session continues until July 3, opposition leaders have highlighted their increased strength in the House, advocating for neutrality and impartiality from the Speaker.
