</excerpt>

Liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski stood poised for a hairline victory in Poland’s presidential election on Sunday in an exit poll, marking a deep divide between a pro-European perspective and climbing nationalist fervor inspired by Donald Trump.

The Ipsos exit poll conducted for broadcasters TVN, TVP, and Polsat placed Trzaskowski, candidate of the ruling centrist Civic Coalition (KO), narrowly in front with 50.3% of support. His challenger, conservative historian and part-time boxer Karol Nawrocki, was supported by the rightist Law and Justice party (PiS) and was well behind on 49.7%. Official announcements were due on Monday, with partial returns and exit poll results expected overnight. The poll’s margin of error was two percentage points.

Trzaskowski, 53, ran on finishing democratic reforms with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, promising to restore a balance of powers eroded during the past nationalist government’s rule. “We won,” Trzaskowski told the faithful after exiting polls were published. “I will unite people and be president for all Poles.”

While the presidency of Poland has limited authority relative to parliament, the position does come with the veto privileges that render the result of the election both nationally and internationally significant. Neighboring nations such as Ukraine, Russia, the US, and the European Union all monitored the election closely, particularly since Poland continues to be a critical NATO ally in the presence of the ongoing Russian conflict.

They concurred on the need to bolster defense and assist Ukraine, but they sharply diverged over the future of NATO. Trzaskowski favors Ukrainian membership in the alliance as crucial to Poland’s security, whereas Nawrocki is against ratification, speculating that it might plunge the alliance into war with Russia.

Nawrocki, emboldened by Trump’s MAGA campaign, refused to give up, promising to “save Poland” from what he labeled a monopolization of power by Tusk’s side. “We will win,” he declared.

The election outcome will shape Poland’s political direction amid growing tensions between European integration and nationalist populism.

</excerpt>

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections, scheduled for September 21. This marks a significant political moment as the country continues to recover from a major economic crisis.

Announcement of Candidacy:

Addressing a rally in Galle, President Wickremesinghe, 75, declared his intention to run for president, stating, “I declare that I will contest the presidential election having already paid my deposit to do so.” His announcement comes amidst speculation about his candidacy due to the weakened position of his United National Party (UNP).

Historical Context:

This will be the first presidential election since Sri Lanka’s severe economic crisis in 2022, which led to the ouster of the powerful Rajapaksa family. Wickremesinghe, who also serves as the country’s finance minister, took office in July 2022 after widespread protests forced his predecessor, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, to flee and resign.

Wickremesinghe’s Vision:

With a clear vision and unwavering determination to elevate our nation on the global stage and transform it into a prosperous and thriving country, I am proud to announce my candidacy for the upcoming presidential election. In a time when our nation was in chaos and on the brink…

— Ranil Wickremesinghe (@RW_UNP) July 27, 2024

In a post on X, Wickremesinghe highlighted his achievements and vision: “With a clear vision and unwavering determination to elevate our nation on the global stage and transform it into a prosperous and thriving country, I am proud to announce my candidacy for the upcoming presidential election.”

He emphasized his efforts in stabilizing the country during its financial crisis: “In a time when our nation was in chaos and on the brink of bankruptcy, it was my love for this country and its people that drove me to take on the arduous task of rebuilding it.”

Election Details:

Nominations for the election are due by August 15. Wickremesinghe has already submitted his nomination and paid a non-refundable deposit to the election commission. The upcoming election will be closely watched as Sri Lanka continues to navigate its economic recovery and political landscape.

Conclusion:

President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s decision to run for re-election underscores his commitment to leading Sri Lanka through its ongoing recovery. As the election approaches, his campaign will likely focus on his role in stabilizing the nation’s economy and his vision for its future prosperity.

Key Takeaway:

Ranil Wickremesinghe’s candidacy in the upcoming presidential election highlights the significant political and economic challenges facing Sri Lanka, as well as the efforts to overcome them and restore stability to the nation.

</excerpt>

Former US President Donald Trump hinted at having already chosen his running mate for the upcoming presidential election during a campaign stop in Philadelphia. In an interview with NBC News, Trump disclosed that he had made a decision in his mind but kept the identity of the candidate confidential, stating, “No, nobody knows.”

Donald Trump suggested that the chosen candidate would be present at the upcoming presidential debate against incumbent Joe Biden, scheduled for Thursday, indicating a possible imminent reveal. However, he hinted that the official announcement would likely coincide with the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee from July 15 to July 18.

Among the speculated top contenders for the vice presidential slot are North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina. Reports from NBC News highlighted Burgum and Vance as leading finalists, with Rubio also in consideration.

Adding to the intrigue, Trump’s praise of Indian-American entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy fueled speculation that he could be a surprise pick. Trump commended Ramaswamy as a “smart guy” and hinted at his involvement, stating, “He’s gonna be with us in some form.”

Recently, HindustanTimes.com reported on a video circulating online allegedly showing Trump’s private jet, with speculation that Ramaswamy could be Trump’s chosen VP candidate.

Approximately 270,000 eligible voters must present personal identification, such as a passport or driving license, to receive their ballot.

Former Iceland Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir and businesswoman Halla Tomasdottir are currently in a close race, according to the latest poll. Jakobsdottir holds 26 per cent of the vote, with Tomasdottir close behind at 23.9 per cent, as per a Gallup poll cited by Iceland Review.

The election unfolds in a single round, and the new President could be elected with just around a quarter of the total vote. Halla Hrund Logadottir secured 19 per cent of the votes, while Baldur Thorhallsson garnered just under 15 per cent, placing fourth. Jon Gnarr, with 8 per cent, stands fifth among the 12 candidates vying for the position.

Outgoing President Gudni Johannesson announced on January 1 that he would not seek reelection after serving two terms in office. Johannesson will continue as Iceland’s President until August 1, when the newly-elected President assumes office.

Although the President in Iceland holds limited political powers, they undertake all ceremonial duties and are deemed to wield significant influence over Icelandic society.

</excerpt>

Mexico is set to hold presidential elections on Sunday, a historic vote that could see a woman have the nation’s top position for the first time. This election features a notable electoral battle between two women and one man, a significant shift for the traditionally “macho” country. Additionally, the National Electoral Institute reports that approximately 20,000 congressional and local positions are up for grabs.

However, like many other countries, Mexico has experienced election-related violence in the lead-up to the polls. Nearly 20 candidates have been killed while seeking political office.

Leading Candidates

Claudia Sheinbaum Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, remains a powerful figure among voters. Sheinbaum pledges to continue the populist policies of her ally, President López Obrador, and is supported by his ruling Morena party. With a background in science, Sheinbaum has meticulously shaped her public image, highlighting her connection to López Obrador. Nonetheless, she faces the challenge of lacking the charismatic appeal that attracted many to her political mentor.

Xóchitl Gálvez Xóchitl Gálvez, an opposition senator and tech entrepreneur, leads a coalition of parties united in their opposition to the outgoing President. Known for her sharp critiques and willingness to engage in verbal confrontations, Gálvez has not yet managed to ignite significant enthusiasm for her Strength and Heart for Mexico coalition.

Jorge Álvarez Máynez The third candidate, and the only man in the race, is Jorge Álvarez Máynez, a former federal congressman from the Citizen Movement party. He has targeted the youth vote but has struggled to gain substantial traction.

Implications for López Obrador’s Legacy

Incumbent President López Obrador, who is seen as Sheinbaum’s mentor, could have his legacy cemented if she is elected. Her victory would indicate that his Morena party can sustain itself beyond his presidency. Although López Obrador remains highly popular, his tenure has been marked by a noted intolerance to criticism and oversight.

As Mexico heads to the polls, the nation stands on the brink of a potentially transformative election, with the possibility of electing its first female president and reshaping its political landscape.

</excerpt>

Following the absence of a key contender, Jose Raul Mulino, a former public security minister, secured victory in Panama’s Presidential elections held on Sunday, as reported by The New York Post (NYT). Ricardo Martinelli, the former president nicknamed “El loco” (the crazy one) by his supporters, was a frontrunner until his disqualification stemming from a money-laundering conviction.

Even after being excluded, Martinelli maintained influence from the Nicaraguan Embassy in Panama City, where he resides under asylum. From this position, he actively campaigned for his former running mate, Jose Raul Mulino.

Mulino, who emerged as the frontrunner among eight candidates, has vowed to rejuvenate Panama’s economic prosperity, reminiscent of the growth witnessed during Martinelli’s presidency from 2009 to 2014.

Against a backdrop of political unrest and public dissatisfaction, heightened by widespread frustration with the current government and recent protests over a contentious copper-mining agreement, as reported by the NYT, the election unfolded.

Voters participated in a single-round vote for a five-year term, with the candidate garnering the highest percentage of votes declared the victor. Simultaneously, voters elected representatives for the National Assembly and local governments.

Critics of Mulino had voiced concerns regarding his firm stance on migration and his associations with Martinelli’s administration, which has been tarnished by allegations of corruption.

Panama’s economy, buoyed by the expansion of the Panama Canal and advantageous trade pacts, encounters obstacles amid a credit rating downgrade and reduced growth forecasts. Economic prospects have been further subdued by the repercussions of a Supreme Court decision deeming a copper mining contract unconstitutional.

Furthermore, the incoming president faces a host of urgent challenges, including a humanitarian emergency along the Darien Gap exacerbated by migrant surges and escalating criminality. Mulino supports rigorous measures to stem illegal migration, a stance criticized by opponents advocating for diplomatic resolutions and human rights safeguards, as per the NYT.

Water scarcity and infrastructure deficiencies are significant concerns, exacerbated by a recent drought affecting the Panama Canal’s operations. Candidates pledge to tackle these issues while focusing on job creation and economic diversification.

Despite Martinelli’s disqualification, Mulino’s campaign leverages his legacy, highlighting accomplishments like the Panama Canal expansion and infrastructure improvements.

However, Mulino’s candidacy is not devoid of controversy. In 2015, he faced arrest on embezzlement charges linked to a radar procurement contract signed during his tenure as public security minister. Although cleared of charges due to procedural flaws, doubts persist regarding his integrity and accountability.

As the election approaches, voters express varying views on Mulino’s candidacy. Some commend his dedication to economic rejuvenation, pointing to Martinelli’s prosperous leadership, while others raise concerns about his ties to corruption-tainted politics, as per The New York Times.

Donald Trump, a former president, criticised the present administration on Tuesday evening in Bedminster, New Jersey, in reference to his prosecution for allegedly mishandling confidential data.
Trump said to a crowd of supporters, “Today we witnessed the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country,” adding, “Very sad thing to watch, a corrupt sitting president had his top political opponent arrested on fake and fabricated charges of which he and numerous other presidents would be guilty, right in the middle of a presidential election in which he’s losing very badly.”

In the upcoming presidential election of the grand old party, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor reiterated on Saturday that his contest against senior party member Mallikarjun Kharge “is not a battle.” Following days of turmoil surrounding the intra-party troubles in Rajasthan, Tharoor and Kharge finally submitted their nominations for the crucial elections, which are set for October 17, on Friday.

“This is not a war. We can belong to different schools of thoughts. Let the members decide,” Tharoor told news agency ANI in an interview on Saturday. “All I am telling the members is that if you’re satisfied with the functioning of the party, please vote for Kharge Sahab. But if you want a change, choose me.. If you want the party to function differently.”

His remarks came as news spread that the Gandhis were endorsing the 80-year-old Kharge for the top party position. On Saturday, Kharge announced his resignation as the opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha, a day after more than 30 leaders surprised many by end-of-nomination support for his candidacy. In contrast, Tharoor was not accompanied by as many senior leaders.

“But there is no ideological problem here. Whatever the message has so far of the Congress will continue to remain,” Shashi Tharoor said on Saturday, dismissing any differences.

Even though the Gandhis made it clear that they would no longer be running for president post, their management has continued to draw criticism. Regarding the family’s importance for the party in light of the BJP’s dynastic politics allegations.

According to Tharoor, several people from all around the nation have asked him to run for the party’s presidency. “You will see the support I enjoy when I submit my nomination paper. I will be in the fray if I get support from party workers from the majority of the states”, said Tharoor in an interview.

He collected his nomination form for the Congress election post last Sunday. He said he was interested in fighting the poll but the picture will be clear after 30th September, the last day of submitting nomination papers.

The Congress leader said he has the support of the Nehru-Gandhi family in fighting the polls. He had discussed the matter with Sonia Gandhi, Rahul and Priyanka “and all three have directly told me that they don’t have any issues”. He also claimed the support of party workers in Kerala in his bid to fight the polls.

The idea of more people contesting for the poll has been welcomed by the current Congress President, Sonia Gandhi. The process for filing nominations for the election will be held from September 24 to 30. The date for scrutiny of the nomination papers is October 1, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 8. This election is being conducted after 22 years. The last election for the post of Congress president was in November 2000 when Sonia Gandhi won, defeating Jitendra Prasada.

Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, confirms he will contest for the position of Congress President. On Thursday, he said he will fill the nominations for the Congress Presidential poll as soon as the date is declared.

While talking to the media, Gehlot stated that Rahul Gandhi doesn’t want a ‘Gandhi’ to be the next President of Congress.

“I will file a nomination, then the other process will be in place, and an election can also be held. This all depends on the future,” Ashok Gehlot said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a lot of claims were made that Rahul Gandhi should be the head of the Congress party once again. But he declined the opportunity as he now wants the party to not be headed by a ‘Gandhi’ to clear the party’s image of a Gandhian party and nepotism.

Gehlot denied making any comment in particular and stated that he is waiting for the decision of the Congress High Command and the MLAs of Rajasthan.

Gehlot is a strong name in the Congress presidential elections along with Shashi Tharoor, who has got a green flag for the president face from Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

The process of filling out the nominations for the post will start on September 24th and will continue till the 30th. The last date for withdrawal of nomination is October 8th.

If there is more than one nominee, the elections will take place in October. The counting will be done and the results will be declared on October 19th.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the state’s ruling party, has said that it will endorse Margaret Alva, the joint opposition’s candidate for vice president of India, in the elections scheduled for August 6.

JMM chief Shibu Soren said in a letter to party MP, “As you are aware, Mrs. Margaret Alva is the opposition’s candidate for the office of vice president of India. After due consideration, the party has decided to vote for her in the V-P polls.”

Taking to Twitter, Alva expressed gratitude, saying “Thank the leaders and the MPs of the JMM for their support in the Vice President’s election on August 6th.”

The vice president is chosen by a vote cast only by members of Parliament, whereas the president is chosen by MPs and representatives from state legislatures. Political parties cannot issue a “whip” in any scenario, meaning that an elector may cast a ballot for a candidate other than the one preferred by his or her party. The method of a single transferable vote is adopted for the polls.

Additionally, it should be noted that the JMM endorsed Droupadi Murmu, the incumbent President, in the July 18 presidential election despite the fact that it is an opposition party to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is in power.

The vice president candidate, Alva, will contest against Jagdeep Dhankar. The BJP alone has enough strength in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha to guarantee Dhankhar’s victory.

The Congress in Karnataka has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against the Presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu, along with others, alleging unlawful practises during the elections on July 18.

The opposition has alleged the ruling party BJP of offering inducements to the MLAs for favouring the NDA’s Presidential candidate during the elections on July 17 and 18.

Shivkumar, the State Congress President, and Siddaramaiah, the Congress legislature party leader, have alleged that the voting MLAs were offered luxury accommodations in a five-star hotel.

The names included in the complaints are Draupadi Murmu, Chief Minister Besavaraj Bomani, BJP State President Nalin Kumar Kateel, senior BJP leader BS Yadiyurappa and BJP chief Satish Reddy. They said the MLAs were invited to the luxurious hotels and were offered liquor, drinks, food and other entertainment.

The complaint stated, “By giving all these facilities to the legislators of the BJP leaders, they have given undue influence to vote in favour of Draupadi Murmu.This is a violation of the Election Code.”
