Bihar Lawyer Seeks FIR Against Sonia Gandhi for ‘Poor Thing’ Remark

A Bihar-based lawyer has filed a complaint against Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, seeking an FIR over her recent remark about President Droupadi Murmu. The lawyer, Sudhir Ojha from Muzaffarpur, accused Sonia Gandhi of ‘disrespecting’ the President, calling it an insult to the country’s highest constitutional authority.

Complaint Filed in Muzaffarpur Court

The complaint, filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Muzaffarpur, also names Gandhi’s children, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as co-accused.

“Sonia Gandhi has insulted President Murmu by making the ‘poor thing’ remark. It is a disrespect to the highest constitutional authority in the country. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are also responsible. A case should be registered against them under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” Ojha told reporters.

The court will take up the matter for hearing on February 10.

What Did Sonia Gandhi Say?

On January 31, after President Murmu’s joint address to Parliament ahead of the Budget session, Sonia Gandhi was asked by reporters about the speech. She responded,
“The President was getting very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing.”

Rahul Gandhi also criticized the speech, calling it “boring and repetitive,” while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra defended their mother’s comments.

Rashtrapati Bhavan Reacts

Following the controversy, Rashtrapati Bhavan issued a statement condemning Sonia Gandhi’s remark without naming her directly.

“While reacting to the media on the Hon’ble President’s address to Parliament, some prominent leaders of the Congress party have made comments that clearly hurt the dignity of the high office and therefore are unacceptable,” the statement read.

The President’s office also clarified that Droupadi Murmu was not tired during her speech, contradicting Sonia Gandhi’s claim.

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday extended her condolences to the family of renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal, calling his death the “end” of a remarkable chapter in Indian cinema. Benegal, a pivotal figure in Indian cinema, passed away on Monday at the age of 90 at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central, where he had been undergoing treatment for chronic kidney disease.

In a post on X, the President wrote, “The passing of Shri Shyam Benegal marks the end of a glorious chapter of Indian cinema and television. He started a new kind of cinema and crafted several classics. A veritable institution, he groomed many actors and artists. His extraordinary contribution was recognised in the form of numerous awards including Dadasaheb Phalke Award and Padma Bhushan. My condolences to the members of his family and his countless admirers.”

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also expressed his condolences over the death of the veteran director, saying “Padma Shri Shyam Benegal, who presented the struggles and questions of the common man through films, has created a huge void in the film industry, which made films while maintaining social bonds.”

In his condolence message, Shinde said, “Shyam Benegal was known as a director who commented on the social situation of the time without showing any fuss in his films. The stories and issues he presented in his films were really thought-provoking and numbing. The whole world had to take notice of the film ‘Ankur’ directed by him. The film industry has lost an artist who effectively commented on social issues through films.”

“He not only made films but also made serials like ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’, all of which received a great response from scholars. Shyam Benegal’s name is considered among the directors who started the movement of parallel films in the Indian cinema. His death has brought an era of parallel cinema to an end,” Dy CM Shinde said.

I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal. I pray to God for his soul to rest in peace. Shyam Benegal was a visionary director who brought realistic stories to life on the silver screen. The characters he portrayed reflected the true conditions of society. I was amazed to learn that in 1976, he funded his iconic film Manthan through crowd-funding, collecting Rs2 each from Amul dairy farmers. Manipur Crisis: Kharge Seeks President’s Intervention Over 300 Deaths, Displacement of 1 Lakh

Amid ongoing unrest in Manipur, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, blaming the “inordinate inaction” of both the central and state governments for failing to restore peace. He called for the President’s intervention to protect the lives and properties of the people in the state.

In his letter, Kharge highlighted that the people of Manipur have lost confidence in the governments at both the state and central levels. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared the letter on X, stating, “@INCIndia President @kharge ji has just written to the President of India on the deteriorating situation in Manipur and the Union Govt’s abysmal failure there over the last eighteen months.”

Kharge detailed the tragic toll of the unrest, stating that over 300 people, including women and children, have lost their lives in the past 18 months, while nearly a lakh people have been displaced, forced to live in relief camps. “The agony of the people continues unabated,” he wrote.

The Congress chief expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions in the state, saying the unrest has disrupted the economy and living conditions, with inflation rising to 10%. He noted that businesses have shut down, jobs have been lost, schools and educational institutions remain closed, and essential commodities are in severe shortage. Highways have been blocked since May 2023, and internally displaced persons in relief camps have been dying by suicide.

Kharge criticised both the central and state governments for failing to restore peace and normalcy, saying, “The people of the state have apparently lost confidence in both governments and reasonably so.” He added that the situation has left the people feeling “isolated and helpless” for over 540 days.

The Congress leader also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur, despite the ongoing crisis. He contrasted this with Rahul Gandhi’s three visits to the state in the past 18 months and his own visit. “The refusal of the Prime Minister to visit Manipur is beyond anybody’s understanding,” he said.

Kharge went on to accuse the governments of deliberate negligence, stating, “The deliberate acts of omission and commission, as indeed inordinate inaction on the part of both the central and state governments, have resulted in complete lawlessness, absence of the rule of law, violations of human rights, compromise of national security, and suppression of fundamental rights of citizens.”

In his letter, Kharge urged President Murmu to intervene as the “custodian of the Constitution” to uphold constitutional propriety and ensure the protection of the lives and properties of the people of Manipur. “I am confident that, through your intervention, the people of Manipur will again live peacefully in their homes in security with dignity,” he concluded.

Fresh Developments in Manipur

Meanwhile, several Manipur MLAs passed a resolution on Monday listing their demands, including a review of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state. The Manipur government also announced an extension of the temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Thoubal, and Churachandpur districts. Is Delhi Heading Towards President’s Rule? BJP’s Plea Sent to Home Ministry for Action

The BJP has called for the dismissal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. According to Vijender Gupta, the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, the memorandum submitted by BJP MLAs accusing the Delhi government of constitutional violations has been sent to the Home Ministry for review.

BJP’s Accusations Against the Delhi Government

Vijender Gupta stated that the AAP government’s failure to form the sixth Delhi Finance Commission and its lack of action on Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports are serious breaches of the Constitution. The BJP claims these oversights have hindered governance in the capital.

Appeal to President Murmu

On August 30, BJP MLAs, led by Vijender Gupta, met with President Murmu, urging her to address what they referred to as a “constitutional crisis” in Delhi. The crisis, they argued, is primarily due to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s imprisonment, which they claim has paralyzed the city’s administration. Gupta shared a letter from the President’s Secretariat, which confirmed that the President had acknowledged the memorandum and referred it to the Home Secretary for further action.

The memorandum also pointed to several allegations of corruption within the AAP government, including the Delhi liquor scam, which led to the arrest of senior ministers. Financial mismanagement within the Delhi Jal Board was also highlighted, with the government failing to prepare balance sheets for the years 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Fiji: President Murmu offers prayers at Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami temple in Nadi

President Droupadi Murmu, currently on a three-nation tour, offered prayers at the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple in Fiji’s Nadi on Wednesday morning.
Earlier in the day, she addressed the Indian community in Fiji during an event and hailed the long-standing relationship between India and Fiji while terming the role of the Indian diaspora in the island nation as a “source of inspiration” for the entire world.
Addressing the event, President Murmu said, “It is always a special feeling to meet members of the Indian community and the Indian diaspora whenever I travel abroad. Fiji is a country with which we have a special and enduring bond dating back 145 years. So it is a great pleasure to meet all of you here.”
She lauded the government of India’s decision to launch Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to further deepen the ties with the Indian diaspora.
She emphasized that India has played key leadership roles on the global stage as a capable and responsive India emerges.
“The historic success of our G-20 Presidency last year demonstrated what India’s inclusive, decisive, ambitious, and action-oriented leadership can do for the world. President Murmu departed from New Delhi on Sunday for a six-day visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
On the second leg of her visit, Murmu will visit New Zealand on August 7-9 at the invitation of Hon Dame Cindy Kiro, Governor General of New Zealand.
During the state visit, Murmu will hold a bilateral meeting with Governor General Kiro and meet with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and also address an education conference and interact with the Indian community and friends of India, the ministry said.
In the last leg of her tour, President Murmu will travel to Timor Leste at the invitation of the President of Timor Leste, Jose Ramos-Horta, following which she will hold engagements on August 10.
The visit also marks the first head-of-state-level visit from India to Timor Leste. President Murmu will also hold a meeting with Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.

Madhya Pradesh Wall Collapse: President Murmu Expresses Grief Over Death Of Nine Children

On Sunday morning, nine children lost their lives when a wall collapsed onto a tent in Madhya Pradesh Sagar district. The tragedy occurred around 8:30 am, with initial reports attributing the collapse to heavy rainfall the previous night.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her profound sadness over the accident. She took to X to offer her condolences, stating, “I am saddened by the news of the death of many innocent children in a heart-wrenching accident in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. I pray that God gives strength to the bereaved parents and family members to bear this pain. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured children.”

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also conveyed his deep sorrow and has instructed the district administration to extend financial assistance to the affected families. Minister Govind Rajput announced that the Chief Minister has sanctioned ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for those injured. He assured that the administration is actively addressing the situation and emphasized the need for preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.

“We are all present here. The CM has announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the family of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for those injured,” Rajput told ANI. He further directed the District Collector of Sagar to implement measures to prevent such tragedies.

Senior officials and rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene, with District Collector Deepak Arya confirming the rescue efforts. “Nine children have died in the incident. Two others have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment,” Arya reported.

This devastating incident follows a similar tragedy in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa on August 3, where four students died after an old wall collapsed due to rain near a private school.

President Murmu gives assent to three new criminal laws

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday gave assent to the three new criminal justice bills which were cleared by Parliament last week.
The three new laws — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act — will replace the colonial era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.

While replying to a debate on the three bills in Parliament, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said the focus were on delivering justice rather than handing down punishment.
The legislation aim at completely overhauling the criminal justice system in the country by giving definition of various offences and their punishments. These have given a clear definition of terrorism, abolished sedition as a crime and introduced a new section titled “offenses against the state”.

Just like in the Lok Sabha, the legislations were passed in the Rajya Sabha last week in the absence of most opposition MPs, who were suspended for unruly behaviour while pressing for a discussion on the December 13 security breach in Parliament.
Replying to the debate, Amit Shah said once the new criminal laws are implemented, the entire process from FIR to judgment will be online.
Their implementation will ensure the end of the ‘tareekh-pe-tareek’-era and justice will be delivered in three years, he said.

Elaborating on the new provisions, Shah said terrorism has been defined and mob lynching made punishable with capital punishment. Also, stringent punishment has been prescribed for those who work against the country, he said.
The absence of the opposition Congress did not stop him from taking a swipe at the party, with Shah saying those who wear “Italian glasses” cannot feel the pride in the Indian Parliament framing the new criminal laws.

His jibe was directed at the party’s former chief Sonia Gandhi, who is of Italian descent.
Shah said the bills had perhaps the widest consultations ever and 72 per cent of the recommendations of the Parliamentary Standing Committee which scrutinised the bills were accepted.

Bharatpur road accident: President Murmu, PM Modi condole loss of lives

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their condolences for the deaths in the Bharatpur road tragedy, which occurred on the Jaipur-Agra National Highway near Hantra village in Rajasthan on Wednesday.

According to an official release, PM Modi also offered an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for each fatality in the Bharatpur road accident earlier today. The injured will each receive Rs. 50,000, according to the statement.

Earlier, the Gujarat Chief Minister and his Rajasthan counterpart both expressed their condolences for the loss of life in the traffic accident. Meanwhile, the dead toll in the Bharatpur road tragedy has risen to 12, according to an official.

According to the official, 11 persons were killed and 12 were injured after a trailer collided with a halted bus on the Jaipur-Agra National Highway in the Hantra hamlet in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur.

The bus was traveling from Gujarat’s Bhavnagar to Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura.
The bus was being repaired because a tyre had burst. Meanwhile, some people were inside the bus and others were standing outside when the high-speed trailer collided with the bus and pulled it 30 meters, according to the official. The injured were transferred to a hospital, while the bodies were buried.

The National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) project will be launched at the state Assembly in Gujarat by President Droupadi Murmu on September 12, the state information department announced on Sunday. The NeVA project is a significant step toward making the Assembly proceedings completely paperless and was motivated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inspirational idea of “One Nation, One Application.”

Shankar Bhai Chaudhary, speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, wrote to President Murmu earlier on Friday to invite her to the state to officially launch the project. In the letter he sent President Murmu on Friday, Chaudhuray also extended an invitation for her to speak before the Gujarat Legislative Assembly’s House on September 12 or 13, depending on her schedule.

“As ensuing 3rd session of the 15th Gujarat Legislative Assembly is commencing from September 13. I am honoured to invite your excellency to inaugurate the project “National e-Vidhan Application” (NeVA), implemented on the concept of “One Nation, One Application” of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra ModiJi, and to address the august House at the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on 12.09.2023-Tuesday or 13.09.2023- Wednesday as per your Excellency’s convenience,” the Gujarat Speaker said.
He further said that Murmu’s presence will inspire and strengthen the everlasting spirit of pro-people good governance.

The National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), developed by the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, is a Unicode-compliant piece of software that makes all work and data produced by legislative bodies accessible online for use by both citizens and Assembly members. NeVA also has a mobile app and a website. This software enables quick access to a wide variety of documents, including lists of questions, businesses, and reports, among others. NeVA also exemplifies the idea of “One Nation, One Application” with the goal of serving Members FIRST through Cloud First and Mobile First.

Teachers’ Day: President Murmu presents awards to 75 teachers from schools & colleges today

On this National Teachers’ Day, President Droupadi Murmu honored 75 educators from all over the nation by presenting them with the National Teachers’ Award. The award ceremony took place in Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, according to the minister of education. Each award comes with a silver medal, a cash prize of Rs 50,000, and a certificate of merit. According to the statement, the recipients would also have a chance to speak with the prime minister.

Department of School Education and Literacy of Ministry of Education has been organising a National level function on Teachers Day every year to confer the National Awards to the best teachers in the country, selected through a rigorous, transparent selection process.
From this year, the ambit of the National Teachers’ Award has been expanded to include teachers of the Department of Higher Education and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, it added.
50 school teachers, 13 teachers from higher education and 12 teachers from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will be awarded this year.

The nation observes National Teachers’ Day on September 5, the anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth. The National Teachers’ Award honors educators who, through their commitment and dedication, have enhanced not only the quality of education but also the lives of their students. President Murmu to visit West Bengal today

On Thursday, West Bengal will receive a visit from President Droupadi Murmu. The President will launch the “My Bengal, Addiction Free Bengal” Campaign as part of the “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” during her one-day visit to Kolkata at Raj Bhavan.

Earlier this year, in March, the President paid her first visit to West Bengal. Upon her arrival at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, the President was then presented with a Guard of Honour. She will also be present at Garden Reach Shipbuilders Engineers Limited’s launch of Vindhyagiri, the sixth ship in the Indian Navy’s Project 17A.

Vindhyagiri, the sixth ship of the Project 17A Frigates, is named after a mountain range in Karnataka. The Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class) were followed by these warships, which have platform management systems, better stealth features, and cutting-edge weapons and sensors.

It is a technologically advanced Frigate that pays a befitting tribute to the distinguished service of its predecessor, the erstwhile INS Vindhyagiri, the Leander Class ASW Frigate.
“The old Vindhyagiri in its nearly 31 years of service from 08 Jul 81 to11 Jun 12, had witnessed various challenging operations and multinational exercises. The newly christened Vindhyagiri stands as a symbol of India’s determination to embrace its rich naval heritage while propelling itself towards a future of indigenous defence capabilities,” the Ministry of Defence release said.

President Murmu hails Djokovic, dubs him role model for millions of Indians

President Droupadi Murmu showed happiness over the sporting ties between India and Serbia. She showered praise on tennis legend Novak Djokovic and said that he is considered a role model and inspiration for millions of Indians.

President Murmu landed in Serbia on Wednesday for an official state visit. This is the first visit of any Indian head of state to Serbia. She got a red carpet welcome, was received by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and was accorded a guard of honour at the Nikola Tesla Airport in Belgrade.

Addressing the Indian citizens living in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, President Murmu praised the remarkable performance of Novak Djokovic, who had 22 Grand Slams in his cupboard. She went on to say that Djokovic is extremely popular in India, and young tennis players want to emulate him.

She further added that many sports coaches from Serbia have worked with Indian athletes to improve their sporting skills.

Currently, Djokovic has been playing at the ongoing French Open 2023. He is always considered a favourite wherever he plays tennis. He has thrilled tennis fans across the world.

It is needless to add that the Serbian tennis legend is a sports icon worldwide. He is set to face World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals of the ongoing French Open championship.

President Murmu on three days trip to Jharkhand starting from today

On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu will start a three-day trip to Jharkhand. President Murmu will travel to Jharkhand’s Ranchi and Kunti districts during her tour. According to the President’s Secretariat, the President will officially open the Jharkhand High Court’s new building in Ranchi on Wednesday.
On May 25, President Murmu will attend a Women’s Conference in Khunti that is being hosted by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
She will be present at the Indian Institute of Information Technology’s second convocation, which will be held in Namkum, Ranchi, on the same day.

The President’s Secretariat has announced that Murmu will attend a civic celebration held at Raj Bhavan, Ranchi, on Thursday night in her honour.

President Murmu, PM Modi pay floral tribute to BR Ambedkar

On the occasion of ‘Ambedkar Jayanti’ in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Dr. BR Ambedkar at Parliament House lawn on Friday.
On the occasion, President Droupadi Murmu also presented a garland to the key architect of India’s Constitution. PM Modi stated on Twitter, “On his birth anniversary, hundreds of salutes to Pujya Babasaheb, who dedicated his life to the empowerment of the deprived and exploited sections of society. Salute to Bheem!”. President Droupadi Murmu extended her greetings on the 132nd birth anniversary of the Dalit icon and father of the Constitution, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, on Friday.

Meanwhile, Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), paid tribute to Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar in Lucknow.
Ambedkar, who was born on April 14, 1891, was an Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer who advocated for women’s and workers’ rights. He passed away on December 6, 1956.
Ambedkar was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1990.
