BJP accuses Congress of anti-Dalit and anti-Adivasi mindset.
</excerpt>

Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge has triggered a political hurricane after reportedly making disparaging comments against President Droupadi Murmu and her predecessor Ram Nath Kovind. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come down heavily on the comments and called for an unconditional public apology from both Kharge and the Congress party.

Kharge delivered the objectionable comments on Monday during a public function in Chhattisgarh, where he blamed the BJP for “plundering the poor” and appropriating the people’s land and natural resources.

During a video clip posted on social media by BJP leaders, Kharge is heard pronouncing the names of the two leaders incorrectly, calling President Murmu “Murma ji” and former President Kovind “Covid”.

“It is their nature to threaten everyone. You will last only when you are not afraid. If we need to safeguard our jal, jungle, zameen (water, forest, land), then you all have to join hands in the battle against them (the BJP). The BJP is always talking about making (Droupadi) Murmu ji and (Ram Nath) Kovind ji the presidents of the country, but did the party do all this to steal our wealth, forests, water, and land?” Kharge said.

BJP Terms Remarks ‘Derogatory’, Demands Resignation of Mallikarjun Kharge

BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia responded sharply by accusing Kharge of having used “objectionable words” against the current and former Presidents and describing it as an insult to the Dalit and Adivasi communities.

It was such a derogatory remark toward a tribal woman…The Congress leaders… pic.twitter.com/CjI6cuxnZy

“You (Kharge) speak big – you referred to Ram Nath Kovind ji as ‘covid’.You call ‘Murma ji’ and then referred to her (President Droupadi Murmu) as a land mafia, accusing her of becoming President just to loot assets, forests,” Bhatia accused.

Bhatia called for Kharge to apologize and for the Congress party to own up to the “distasteful and derogatory” words of their leader.

“If the Congress and Mallikarjun Kharge do not apologise, you will see every citizen (of the country) venting out their anger. This blunder will prove costly for Congress,” he threatened.

Congress Alleged to have an ‘anti-Dalit’ and ‘anti-Adivasi’ Mentality

Bhatia also called Kharge a “remote-controlled president”, supposedly working under the instructions of Rahul Gandhi. Bhatia said that Kharge’s statement is indicative of the Congress party’s old “anti-Dalit, anti-Adivasi and anti-Constitution” policy.

BJP leader CR Kesavan expressed similar views, saying Kharge’s statement was a “venomous and diabolical attack” on the integrity of the two constitutional heads.

“For the Congress party, not Dalit welfare but only Dynastic welfare has always been top priority,” Kesavan tweeted on X.

He also quoted examples from the past, claiming that Congress refused Bharat Ratna to Dr B.R. Ambedkar and has repeatedly disrespected leaders from marginalized communities.

The BJP warned it would intensify nationwide protests against the Congress for repeatedly insulting Dalits and Adivasis if no apology is issued.

</excerpt>

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday launched three significant publications from the Supreme Court, joined by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, CJI-designate Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. The newly released publications are titled ‘Justice for the Nation: Reflections on 75 Years of the Supreme Court of India’, ‘Prisons in India: Mapping Prison Manuals and Measures for Reformation and Decongestion’, and ‘Legal Aid through Law Schools: A Report on Working of Legal Aid Cells in India.’

In his address, the CJI highlighted the profound importance of these publications, stating, “It is nigh on impossible to understate the importance of the publications which are being released today. Of the three publications, one is a collection of essays which analyse the jurisprudence of the court since its foundation and the remaining two are studies which assess the functioning of legal-aid cells in universities and the state of prisons, respectively.” He noted that these works serve as vital moments of introspection for both the Supreme Court and the broader legal system.

The CJI emphasized that self-reflection is crucial for any institution striving for excellence. “For any institution, the pursuit of excellence necessitates the deliberate act of self-reflection. As part of this process, we must carefully assess our past and present and use what we extract to inform our actions in the future,” he added.

The publications also provide essential insights, as the CJI explained: “While the compendium serves as a valuable tool for judges, lawyers, and citizens to ruminate on the direction the law has taken in the past several decades, the reports provide valuable data and analysis which will enable various actors in the legal system, including courts, the Legal Services Authorities at the national, state, and district levels, and legislative bodies, to better understand the nature of problems which prevail at the grassroots.”

He further stressed the importance of an accurate understanding of these issues to devise effective solutions, warning that, “Without a clear picture of ground realities, laws and policies will have limited impact and may even entrench existing problems.”

Must Read: Renowned Folk Singer Sharda Sinha Passes Away at 72 in Delhi

The first report, Prisons in India: Mapping Prison Manuals and Measures for Reformation and Decongestion, is a product of the President’s vision, making her launch of the publication especially fitting. “This report analyses the prison manuals of all States and Union Territories and tests its provisions on the touchstone of the Constitution. It also examines the role of the district judiciary in adjudicating applications for bail, the use of alternative punishments for convicted persons and their reformation,” the CJI said. The report highlights underexamined issues, such as menstrual equity, reproductive rights for female prisoners, and de-addiction programs. One significant finding of the report is that caste often influences the tasks assigned to prisoners, with those from marginalized backgrounds more likely to be given sanitation duties, he noted.

On the second report, Legal Aid through Law Schools: A Report on the Working of Legal Aid Cells in India, CJI Chandrachud spoke about the dual purpose of legal aid clinics. “They are aimed at supplementing the state’s legal aid programs as well as developing the skills of law students. In the process, it is hoped that they inculcate a sense of service to society in each generation of lawyers,” he said, adding that the legal community must ensure these clinics function effectively.

The third publication, Justice for the Nation: Reflections on 75 Years of the Supreme Court of India, is a collection of essays by retired judges, eminent jurists, academics, and lawyers examining critical themes and trends in the Court’s jurisprudence. Topics covered range from the late Fali Nariman’s discussion on preambular values to Dr. Upendra Baxi’s exploration of judicial review limits, as well as the evolution of fundamental rights concerning gender, disability, free speech, and caste. “I hope – nay, I am certain – that this volume will catalyse a lively discussion amongst the public and the legal community on the role of the Supreme Court in our democracy,” the CJI concluded.

Appointed by President Droupadi Murmu, Khanna will succeed Justice DY Chandrachud and serve until May 2025.
</excerpt>

In a significant development, Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Droupadi Murmu. He will take the oath of office on November 11, 2024, following the retirement of the current CJI, Justice DY Chandrachud. The announcement was made by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal through a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Official Announcement

The Union Law Minister confirmed Justice Khanna’s appointment with a formal statement. “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,” Meghwal stated.

Legal Journey and Key Judgments

Justice Sanjiv Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019, following his distinguished tenure at the Delhi High Court. His judicial career has been marked by several landmark rulings, contributing significantly to India’s legal landscape.

Among his key judgments, Justice Khanna was part of the Constitution Bench that struck down the controversial Electoral Bonds scheme, which allowed anonymous donations to political parties. He also played a crucial role in upholding the scrapping of Article 370, a historic decision that revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

Interim Bail for Arvind Kejriwal

In July 2024, Justice Khanna headed a bench that granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the high-profile money laundering case linked to the Delhi liquor policy scandal. This decision, like many others, showcased his sharp judicial acumen and fairness in the application of the law.

Tenure and Retirement

Justice Khanna’s tenure as the Chief Justice of India will be relatively short, as he is due to retire on May 13, 2025. Despite this, his contributions to the judiciary are expected to leave a lasting impact on India’s legal system.

As the nation anticipates his leadership in the highest judicial office, Justice Khanna’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the judiciary, with expectations of continuing reforms and significant rulings ahead.

</excerpt>

Delhi’s political landscape has seen a significant shift as President Droupadi Murmu officially accepted Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation and appointed Atishi as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. This comes after Kejriwal, embroiled in the liquor policy case, was granted bail by the Supreme Court last Friday.

Kejriwal Steps Down Amid Legal Trouble

After being granted bail, Arvind Kejriwal announced his decision to step down as Chief Minister, giving himself 48 hours to resign. Kejriwal’s decision follows increasing pressure from the liquor policy scam case, a scandal that has drawn national attention. On September 17, his resignation was formalized, marking the end of his tenure as Delhi’s CM.

The swearing-in ceremony for Atishi is scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 PM in Delhi. Alongside Atishi, five other ministers—Gopal Rai, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Kailash Gehlot, Imran Hussain, and Mukesh Ahlawat—will also take their oaths and join her in forming the new Delhi cabinet.

Looking Ahead: AAP’s Next Move

As Atishi prepares to take on her new role, the Aam Aadmi Party is seeking to hold simultaneous assembly elections in November. This would coincide with the elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, adding further momentum to Delhi’s political developments.

Atishi’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for the AAP, and her leadership will be closely watched as the party navigates the upcoming elections and works to restore its public image.

With her track record and Kejriwal’s backing, Atishi is poised to take on the significant responsibilities of leading the national capital at a crucial time.

</excerpt>

In a heartbreaking case that has shocked Kolkata, junior doctors from the city’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have appealed for justice after the brutal rape and murder of a fellow doctor. The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front has penned a four-page letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, asking for her immediate intervention. The letter has also been sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Union Health Minister JP Nadda.

Doctors Demand Justice Amid Growing Fears for Safety
The doctors’ letter expresses their fear and uncertainty following the horrific crime, urging authorities to take action so that healthcare professionals in West Bengal can perform their duties without fear.

“We humbly place these issues before your esteemed excellency, as the head of state, to ensure that our colleague, the victim of this despicable crime, receives justice,” the letter read. The protesting doctors stressed that without intervention, they are struggling to work in an atmosphere of fear, distrust, and hopelessness.

Healthcare Services in West Bengal Disrupted by Protests
Junior doctors have been protesting outside Swasthya Bhawan in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata, despite heavy rains, to demand action. Many doctors have refrained from working within the hospital premises, choosing alternative means to fulfill their healthcare duties to citizens.

The protests come after the horrific August 9 incident, when a second-year postgraduate medical student was found raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The crime has not only shaken the medical community but has also prompted widespread concern over the safety of healthcare workers in the state.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Appeals to Doctors
The protests continued even after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged doctors to return to work. In a passionate statement, Banerjee offered to resign from her position, stating, “I am not concerned about the post; I want justice for the victim and care for ordinary people.”

Healthcare Workers Face Mounting Challenges
The junior doctors’ letter to President Murmu underlines the growing distress among medical professionals in West Bengal, emphasizing the need for immediate government action to ensure their safety. They believe that intervention from the highest offices of the country is crucial to restoring confidence within the healthcare community.

</excerpt>

CBI, meanwhile, grills former principal of the medical college, where a junior doctor was murdered after rape, for the fourth day on Monday.

Protests against the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old medical student continued across West Bengal even as West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Monday said “democracy is declining” in West Bengal. Amidst the ongoing protests in West Bengal, Governor Bose is likely to meet President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday, Raj Bhavan sources said.

Governor Bose made the comments while meeting a delegation, including doctors and others at a Raksha Bandhan event and expressed his anguish at what transpired at RG Kar Hospital as well as the ‘botched administrative and law enforcement steps”.

Meeting a delegation that expressed solidarity with those protesting the rape and murder at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Bose said “democracy is declining”.

At the ceremony, he met people from all strata of society, mostly women and transgender people.

“In West Bengal, democracy is declining… This cannot continue. Today, we must vow to protect our daughters and sisters… Our society should be one where women feel safe and content… Now is the time for all men to correct our mistakes,” Bose said during the meeting.

“The delegates expressed solidarity with the medical professionals and the protesting masses across the State and the country,” read a statement by the Raj Bhawan, adding that the Governor briefed the delegates on steps he has taken, including his field visit to the hospital and monitoring the situation.

“The delegation expressed their anguish at what had transpired at the RG Kar Medical College and the subsequent botched administrative and law enforcement steps that have clearly failed to measure up to the occasion,” the statement added.

It read that the people he met insisted on taking the investigations “on the right track” to ensure women’s dignity, safety, and security, particularly that of medical professionals.
Governor Bose had announced on Sunday night that he called for an emergency meeting with various sections of people in West Bengal to discuss the case and gather opinions on the Government’s response.

His decision came after Rajya Sabha MP and former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh shared a letter on X urging West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Bose to take immediate action.

“With deep anguish over the delay in justice for the Kolkata rape and murder victim, an incident that has shaken the conscience of all of us, I have penned a heartfelt plea to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. @MamataOfficial Ji, and Hon’ble @BengalGovernor, urging them to act swiftly and decisively,” Singh wrote on X.

In response, the Governor had posted on X: “HG’s (Honourable Governor’s) swift action on the letter from Shri Harbhajan Singh expressing his anguish over the tragic incident at R.G. Kar Medical College. HG has called an emergency meeting of a cross-section of Bengal society to apprise them of the action taken in the matter and to take stock of their opinions in this regard.”

Meanwhile, CBI officers for the fourth consecutive day on Monday questioned the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh in connection with their probe into the rape and murder of the woman doctor. “Dr. Ghosh reached the CBI’s city office at CGO Complex on Monday morning,” an official said.

In another development, Kolkata Police said: “One person was arrested in Kolkata for allegedly disclosing the identity of the doctor on social media, and for issuing threats to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.”

Police sources said a second-year B.Com student has been arrested by Kolkata Police over allegations of sharing a “provocative social media post” against Mamata Banerjee.

As per the police, the student has been accused of inciting hatred and encouraging criminal activity by allegedly “encouraging” people to assassinate the CM.

Police said they received a complaint that the student uploaded three Instagram stories related to the rape and murder case at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, allegedly disclosing the victim’s name and identity.

“The accused person also shared two stories against the CM of West Bengal containing offensive comments and threats to her life,” claimed Kolkata police officials. An investigation into the case is in progress, they said. The student has been booked under BNS sections 351 (2), 353(1), and 352, dealing with an intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and sections 72 and 79 which deal with words, gestures and acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

During the day, the Kolkata Police summoned two well-known doctors to the police headquarters alleging that they had revealed the name of the victim in public. Both doctors denied the charges.

Well-known cardiac surgeon Dr Kunal Sarkar, who was accused of revealing the victim’s identity, denied the allegation. “I have never revealed the name or identity of the victim. I have questions about this case like everyone else. Maybe they don’t want people to share views on this case and it is an attempt to stop people from sharing their anguish,” Sarkar said.

</excerpt>

President Droupadi Murmu stated on Wednesday that the government’s creation of an ideal ecosystem for startups, which has enhanced India’s appeal as an investment destination and improved efficiency in banking and financial sectors, has laid the groundwork for the next wave of economic reforms and growth. This progress is expected to propel India towards becoming a developed nation.

In her address to the nation on the eve of the 78th Independence Day, she highlighted that India has been one of the fastest-growing major economies, achieving an average annual growth rate of 8% from 2021 to 2024.

“This has not only put more money in the hands of people, it has also drastically reduced the number of people living below the poverty line. As for those who continue to suffer from poverty, all efforts are being made not only to provide a helping hand to them, but also to bring them out of it.”

She mentioned that the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, introduced during the early stages of Covid-19, is still delivering free rations to approximately 80 crore people, ensuring that those who have recently escaped poverty are not driven back into it. She expressed pride in India’s achievement of becoming the fifth largest economy globally and highlighted that the country is on track to join the top three economies soon. She also acknowledged the contributions of farmers, workers, and wealth creators.

“This has been made possible only by tireless hard work of farmers and workers, by the farsightedness of planners and wealth-creators, and by the visionary leadership. Farmers, our Annadata, have ensured that agricultural production continues to beat expectations. With this, they have contributed immensely to making India self-reliant in agriculture and feed our people. Infrastructure has received a boost in recent years,” she said.

The president noted that strategic planning and efficient institutions have contributed to the growth of the network of roads, highways, railways, and ports.

“Considering the great potential of futuristic technology, the government has vigorously promoted a range of sectors, such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence, while also creating an ideal ecosystem for startups which will propel their growth. It has made India an even more attractive investment destination. With greater transparency, the banking and financial sector has become much more efficient. All of these factors have set the stage for the next generation of economic reforms and economic growth that will catapult India among the developed nations,” she said.

The president remarked that this swift yet fair progress has elevated India’s standing in global affairs.

“After the successful completion of its G-20 Presidency, India has consolidated its role as the voice of the Global South. India intends to use its influential position to expand the scope of world peace and prosperity,” she said.

Murmu, who arrived in Timor-Leste after visits to Fiji and New Zealand, noted that the new embassy will provide consular services to Indians residing in Timor-Leste and improve communication between the two governments.

“As a part of our friendship, we will soon open an embassy in Timor-Leste. This will help in streamlining of consular and other services for Indians living in the country. This will also help in improving communication between the governments of both countries,” Murmu made the announcement while speaking at a State Banquet hosted by Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta at Palacio Nobre De Lohane.

She emphasised the importance of strengthening the ties between India and Timor-Leste and enhancing the ‘Delhi – Dili’ connection. She also affirmed India’s commitment to partnering with Timor-Leste on its path to progress and development.

“India and Timor-Leste’s friendship is based on the same views on pluralism and sovereignty. Timor-Leste achieved independence recently. It is demographically young. The challenges faced by this nation are similar to India’s,” she said.

“Today, Timor-Leste is carving out its own destiny. It is considered one of the most vibrant democracies of Southeast Asia, and this is a testimony to the courage, resilience and bravery of the Timorese people who have achieved this,” Murmu said.

</excerpt>

President Droupadi Murmu, currently on a four-day visit to her home state of Odisha, has expressed deep concern over the severe heatwaves experienced in many parts of India this summer. She emphasized that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent worldwide in recent years.

During her visit, President Droupadi Murmu participated in the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra and also visited Puri’s Golden Beach. Sharing her experience on social media platform X, she wrote, “There are places that bring us closer to the essence of life and remind us that we are part of nature. Mountains, forests, rivers, and seashores touch something profound within us. While walking along the seashore today, I felt a deep connection with nature – the gentle breeze, the crashing waves, and the vast stretch of water. It was a meditative experience.”

— President of India (@rashtrapatibhvn) July 8, 2024

She added, “It gave me a deep sense of inner peace, similar to what I felt during my darshan of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannathji yesterday. This experience is universal; we all feel a connection with something larger than ourselves when we encounter nature, which sustains and gives meaning to our lives.”

President Murmu highlighted the disconnect between humanity and nature due to the demands of modern life. She noted, “Amidst the busyness of daily life, we lose our connection with Mother Nature. Humanity thinks it has conquered nature and is using it for short-term gains. The consequences are clear. This summer, numerous regions in India faced severe heatwaves. Extreme weather events have been happening more often worldwide in recent years. The future looks even more alarming.”

She also addressed the broader issue of global warming and its effects on the planet. “More than seventy percent of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans, and global warming is causing sea levels to rise, threatening coastal areas. The oceans and their rich biodiversity have suffered heavily due to various types of pollution,” she said.

President Murmu praised the traditional knowledge of people living in harmony with nature, particularly those in coastal areas. “People who live close to nature have preserved traditions that can guide us. Coastal inhabitants, for instance, understand the winds and waves of the sea. Like our ancestors, they worship the sea as a deity.”

She called for collective action from both governments and citizens to protect the environment. “There are two ways to tackle the challenge of protecting and conserving the environment: large-scale actions by governments and international organizations, and smaller, local efforts by individuals. Both approaches support each other. Let’s commit to doing our part, both personally and locally, for a better future. We owe it to our children,” she concluded.

President Murmu’s visit to Odisha has not only been a personal journey but also a call to action for the nation to reconnect with and protect the environment.

President Droupadi Murmu honored Captain Anshuman Singh with the Kirti Chakra on Friday for his heroic actions in saving his fellow soldiers from a fire at Siachen, an event that led to his death. A video of the award ceremony, showing Captain Singh’s wife receiving the honor from the president, has gained widespread attention on social media.

The Kirti Chakra is India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

In the brief video, Smriti Singh, accompanied by Captain Singh’s mother, stands before the president at the ceremony. Overcome with emotion, the young woman in white folds her hands as her late husband’s bravery is recognized.

“Disregarding his own safety, he exhibited exceptional bravery and resolve to rescue many people in a major fire incident,” the president shared in a post on X.

Social media users have commended Smriti Singh for her remarkable strength and grace during the ceremony.

“Wives & Mothers of defence personnel are the strongest women. Hon’ble President of India walked to the young Wife & the Mother of Capt (Dr) Anshuman Singh, Kirti Chakra (posthumous) to present the award,” Lieutenant General (Retd) Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon wrote on X.

In July last year, a short circuit caused a fire at an Indian Army ammunition dump in Siachen around 3 a.m. Captain Singh worked to rescue those trapped inside a nearby fiberglass hut as it caught fire. When the blaze spread to a medical investigation shelter, he tried to retrieve life-saving medicine stored there. In the process, he sustained severe burns and later succumbed to his injuries.

Captain Singh and Smriti Singh were married in February last year after he graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune. Siachen, under Operation Meghdoot, was his first posting.

Earlier, Odisha CM Charan Manjhi declared two-day holiday on July 7 and 8 for the auspicious Rath yatra of Lord Jagannath. Thus, marking this special occasion after 53 years as ‘Nabajaubana Darshan’ ‘Netra Utsav’ and the ‘Rath Yatra’ are all on the same day.

Later, the Odisha CM conducted a high-level meeting and reviewed preparations of annual rath yatra of Lord Jagannath and his kins Subhadra and Balram on Tuesday.

This meeting was attended by several ministers and senior officials, including deputy CMs K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida.

President Droupadi Murmu to Attend Jagannath Yatra Festival

Meanwhile, president Droupadi Murmu is set to attend the Lord Jagannath Yatra in Odisha’s Puri on July 7 2024.

As per Rashtrapati Bhawan’s release, President Murmu will visit the state for four days, starting from July 6.

Ahead of president’s visit, several security measures have put in place. As per Additional Director General Sanjay Kumar, a special VIP zone will be constituted for Odisha governor, chief minister, Union ministers and for the president, a buffer zone has been created.

Furthermore, he also revealed, that a special team led by senior superintendent of police (SP) rank officer has also been constituted to supervise President’s visit to puri.

About Jagannath Rath Yatra Festival

The Rath Yatra Festival of Puri is one of the sacred and oldest Hindu chariot festival, which takes place annually on bright half of the lunar month of Ashadh (June–July) on Dwitiya Tithi (second day of the waxing of the moon).

In this festival, three deities- Lord Jagannath, Brother Balram and sister Subhadra are taken to Gundicha Temple via three immense wooden chariots carried by dozens of devotees along the grand avenue known as bada danda.

Then, the deities live in Gundicha Temple for a week. After that, they come back to Jagannath Temple. Their return journey is called Bahuda Yatra.

But this year is special for the devotees, as key rituals like ‘Nabajaubana Darshan,’ ‘Netra Utsav’ and the ‘Gundicha Yatra’ will take place on same day, a combination which was not witnessed since 1971.

Before becoming the Vice-President of India, Dhankhar was the Governor of West Bengal from July 2019 to July 2022.

“Last night I called up Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and requested him to look into the matter. I also informed him that I had also written to President Droupadi Murmu regarding the issue. What is happening regarding the swearing-in of the MLAs is unacceptable,” he told mediapersons on Friday.

Two Trinamool Congress MLA candidates, Sayantika Bandyopadhyay and Rayat Hossain Sarkar, had won the bye-elections to Baranagar and Bhagabangola respectively. The bye-elections were held simultaneously with the last phase of the Lok Sabha polls on June 1 and the results were declared on June 4.

The row over the venue for the swearing in ceremony of the two newly elected Trinamool Congress MLAs intensified since the two leaders refused to take oath at Raj Bhavan as directed by Governor CV Ananda Bose and staged a dharna in the Assembly complex. The Governor had invited the duo to take the oath in the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. However, they declined the invitation, claiming that convention dictates that in the case of bye-poll winners, the Governor assigns the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker to administer the oath.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Sayantika Bandyopadhyay and Rayat Hossain Sarkar resumed their dharna for the second consecutive day in front of BR Ambedkar’s statue in the Vidhan Sabha complex demanding that Bose enable them to perform their duties as legislators by facilitating the oath-taking ceremony in the Assembly.

Sayantika Bandyopadhyay, who was an actress before turning to politics, also told mediapersons that she “felt unsafe going to Raj Bhavan since a female staffer had accused the Governor of making inappropriate advances. My family members won’t allow me to go to Raj Bhavan alone as they are also aware of reports of a woman being molested there. Who will take the responsibility of my safety and security?”

Meanwhile on Friday, the Governor’s office criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her remarks suggesting women allegedly felt unsafe going to Raj Bhavan stating that it is expected of public representatives not to create “erroneous and slanderous impressions.”

“It is expected of public representatives to uphold the Constitution and refrain from creating erroneous and slanderous impressions that may cast aspersions on the Governor,” the Raj Bhavan said on X. Mamata had alleged on Thursday that she received complaints from women who felt unsafe going to Raj Bhavan after reports of certain activities there, and stressed that the Governor has no right to prevent the oath-taking process.” A political storm had erupted in May over a complaint by a Raj Bhavan woman employee who had accused the Governor of “molesting” her, even as Bose had dubbed the allegations as “baseless and absurd drama”.

The Governor’s office clarified that the newly elected MLAs had initially requested a venue shift to the Assembly due to personal preferences but had not raised any specific safety concerns about Raj Bhavan otherwise.

“The newly elected MLAs had requested the Hon’ble Governor to consider shifting the venue to the Assembly because of their personal preferences and never expressed any apprehensions about coming to Raj Bhavan otherwise,” the post added.

When the MLAs declined the Governor’s invitation to take the oath at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, Bose left for New Delhi the same evening.

Yesterday, Mamata Banerjee had stated that Bandyopadhyay and Sarkar were unable to take the oath despite having got elected a month back, and had accused the Governor of obstructing them from doing so.

The Raj Bhavan post, however, said all issues are addressed by the Governor with “promptitude and constitutional propriety as also this one”.

“Responses unjustifiably critical of the Governor were least expected from an experienced public representative,” it added.

The President said, “My government does not consider the Constitution of India as just a medium of governance; rather we are making efforts to ensure that our Constitution becomes a part of public consciousness.”

Responding to the President’s address, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said on X, “Listening to the President’s address written by the Modi Govt, it seemed as if Modi ji is in a perpetual state of denial! </excerpt>

Addressing a joint session of Parliament, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted her government’s efforts to foster an environment where youth can aspire to and achieve significant dreams. While discussing government initiatives in education, some opposition members interjected with shouts about ‘NEET.’

Key Quotes:

1. A significant achievement has emerged from Jammu and Kashmir during this election. Decades-old voting records have been shattered. Over the past four decades, Kashmir witnessed low voter turnout due to strikes and shutdowns. Anti-India elements used this to misrepresent Jammu and Kashmir’s global stance. However, this time, the people of Jammu and Kashmir decisively responded to such forces.

2. The world has witnessed Indians electing a stable, fully-mandated government for the third consecutive time, a feat achieved after six decades. This repeated trust in my government reflects the people’s confidence that only we can fulfill their aspirations. It serves as validation for the decade-long mission of service and good governance that my administration has pursued.

3. Any disruption in examinations is unacceptable. Government recruitments and exams must uphold integrity and transparency. My government is committed to ensuring fair investigations and imposing strict penalties on those involved in recent incidents of paper leaks.

4. The upcoming budget will include significant economic and social decisions, marking historic steps forward. We will accelerate reforms to meet the aspirations of our people, fostering competitive-cooperative federalism.

5. India has now become the world’s fifth-largest economy. Despite global pandemics and conflicts, we have maintained an average growth of 8 percent over the past decade. This growth underscores the success of our reforms. India currently contributes 15 percent to global growth, and our aim is to ascend to become the world’s third-largest economy.

</excerpt>

In a notable decision, President Droupadi Murmu has denied the mercy plea of Mohammed Arif, also known as Ashfaq, a Pakistani citizen who was convicted for his involvement in the fatal Red Fort attack that occurred almost 24 years ago. This decision underscores India’s firm stance against terrorism and reaffirms the country’s commitment to justice for the victims of such heinous acts.

Arif’s mercy petition, which was submitted on May 15, 2024, was denied on May 27, as per an official statement from the President’s secretariat. The rejection of this plea marks the final chapter in a long judicial process that has seen Arif’s conviction and death sentence upheld by multiple courts, including the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India.

The Red Fort attack, carried out on December 22, 2000, was a brazen act of terrorism targeting one of India’s most iconic landmarks. The assault resulted in the deaths of three army personnel from the 7 Rajputana Rifles unit, who were stationed within the historic fort. The attack was orchestrated by members of the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), with Arif playing a main role.

Arif, along with three other LeT operatives—Abu Shaad, Abu Bilal, and Abu Haider—had infiltrated India in 1999 with the objective of executing this attack. While the other terrorists were subsequently killed in separate encounters, Arif was apprehended four days after the incident, leading to his trial and eventual conviction.

A notable judicial development occurred in January 2016 when a constitution bench of the Supreme Court allowed Arif to seek a reopening of the dismissal of his review petitions for an open court hearing. This directive followed a September 2014 judgement that mandated all death sentence cases awarded by the high courts be reviewed by a three-judge bench, ensuring a thorough judicial process.

The Supreme Court, in its rulings, emphasized that the Red Fort attack was a grievous assault on India’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty. It found no mitigating factors in Arif’s favor, reinforcing the appropriateness of the death sentence.

The rejection of Arif’s mercy plea by President Murmu highlights the gravity with which India treats acts of terrorism, particularly those aimed at its symbols of national pride and security. This decision is expected to serve as a stern warning to those who seek to challenge India’s sovereignty through acts of violence.

The memories of the brave soldiers who lost their lives in the Red Fort attack remain a poignant reminder of the cost of safeguarding the nation against terrorism.

</excerpt>

President Droupadi Murmu celebrated the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu on Thursday, acknowledging his significant contributions to the Santali community. President Murmu expressed, “I pay my tributes to Pandit Raghunath Murmu on his birth anniversary. By developing Ol Chiki script he gave new identity to Santhali language. His contribution to the promotion of Santhali language has also enhanced opportunities for Santhali people and made them more aware of their rich cultural heritage.”

Renowned as a philosopher, writer, and educator, Pandit Raghunath Murmu is hailed as a pivotal figure in the Santali community for creating the “Ol Chiki” script, marking a milestone in India’s linguistic history. Prior to the nineteenth century, Santali lacked a written language, relying solely on oral tradition for knowledge transmission. Despite efforts by European researchers and Christian missionaries to document Santali using Bengali, Odia, and Roman scripts, Raghunath Murmu rejected these approaches, opting to develop the “Ol Chiki” script instead. This initiative greatly enriched the cultural identity of the Santali society, as Murmu authored numerous songs, plays, and school textbooks in this script.

Born on Baisakhi Purnima (Buddha Purnima) in 1905 in the village of Dandbose (Dahardih) in Rairangpur, a part of Mayurbhanj State in Odisha, Raghunath Murmu’s upbringing was steeped in traditional Santali customs. Despite being initially named Chunu Murmu, customary practice saw his name changed to Raghunath Murmu by the priest who performed his naming ceremony. During the Swadeshi movement in 1942, he became recognized as a revolutionary figure for championing the Ol Chiki script. Traveling extensively, he taught villagers how to read and write using the Ol Chiki alphabet and authored educational materials to facilitate learning in this script.

Throughout his life, Raghunath Murmu remained dedicated to promoting the Ol Chiki script, even spending his final days in his native village. His contributions were widely acknowledged, with titles such as “Guru Domke” (the great teacher) bestowed upon him at the All India Sarna Conference in 1956. Supported by his brother-in-law Muniram Baskey, he established a printing facility and published materials in Ol Chiki script, including the weekly magazine Saagen Saakam. Emphasizing the significance of Ol Chiki in literature, he founded the Baba Tilka Majhi Library and initiated the SECA (Social-Educational and Cultural Association) to foster intellectual exchange.

Pandit Raghunath Murmu left behind a rich legacy of more than 150 plays, short stories, novels, and poems written in the Ol Chiki script. His pioneering work earned him numerous accolades. He passed away on February 2, 1982, leaving an indelible mark on Santali language and culture.
