</excerpt>

With the 2025 Asia Cup scheduled for September, escalating tensions between India and Pakistan have cast serious doubts on the tournament’s feasibility. Although neither the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), nor the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially announced a delay, sources suggest the event could be postponed.

The ongoing border conflict has also affected the anticipation around the potential India-Pakistan clash in the T20 World Cup 2026, with fears that such high-profile fixtures may not materialise under current circumstances. While the BCCI might remain unaffected due to India’s diplomatic stance, the PCB and even the ICC could suffer major setbacks.

PCB’s Backup Plan: UAE-Based Tri-Series in the Works

Determined to stay prepared, the PCB has proposed hosting a tri-series with Afghanistan and the UAE ahead of the Asia Cup. According to tribune.com.pk, the PCB wants this series to help players adapt to the UAE conditions, especially if the Asia Cup is eventually shifted to a neutral venue like the UAE.

Afghanistan is already scheduled to tour Pakistan in August. However, PCB officials believe holding a tri-nation series in the UAE involving both Afghanistan and the UAE would be a strategic move, allowing players to get acclimatised ahead of a possible venue change.

Hybrid Model or Neutral Venue Likely for Asia Cup

India is technically the host for the 2025 Asia Cup, but due to geopolitical tensions, Pakistan is unlikely to tour the country. As a result, organisers are considering a hybrid model or moving the tournament to a neutral venue altogether — with the UAE emerging as a top contender.

Ongoing discussions between the cricket boards are expected to yield a formal announcement soon. The PCB, meanwhile, is in active talks with both the Afghanistan Cricket Board and Emirates Cricket Board to finalise tri-series arrangements.

Fans Divided Over PCB’s Move

Not everyone is happy with PCB’s tri-series idea. Some fans have criticised the inclusion of UAE, demanding more competitive teams like Sri Lanka or Bangladesh instead. They argue that a Pakistan-Afghanistan series in Pakistan would draw huge crowds and shouldn’t be moved to the UAE without necessity.

Still, PCB appears ready to risk fan backlash to prioritise preparedness, especially if the Asia Cup is held outside Pakistan. However, if the tournament is ultimately postponed, this entire effort may face strong criticism from the home base.

As uncertainties cloud the cricketing calendar in South Asia, all eyes remain on the ACC and ICC for the next official word. Until then, the PCB is choosing to prepare rather than wait.

Saud Shakeel Mocks PCB Over Coaching Chaos: “Will Appoint a Coach No One Can Remove”

<excerpt>Pakistan batter Saud Shakeel takes a swipe at the PCB’s instability, highlighting their coaching chaos in a now-viral clip.
</excerpt>

Pakistan cricketer Saud Shakeel has caused ripples with a caustic but biting statement against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on the issue of the board’s perpetual unrest over coaching assignments. In one recent interview that quickly went viral on social media, Saud Shakeel made a jibing slap at the PCB’s failure to retain a fixed head coach.

When the 18-second video went viral, the anchor in it asked Saud Shakeel what he would do if the PCB made him chairman. Shakeel replied without blinking, “The first thing I will do is bring in a permanent coach for three years, whom nobody can remove, not even when I’m no longer the chairman.” The anchor giggled, and people online repeated his lines.

pic.twitter.com/qrtqwaFJPQ

— PACE is PACE Yar (@PACEisPACEYar) April 3, 2025

Shakeel’s remark is a sign of general discontent among players and fans regarding the PCB’s recent actions. Interim coach Aaqib Javed reports that Pakistan has replaced 16 coaches and 26 selectors in only the past two years—a frightening pace by any measure.

Coaching Carousel: A Timeline of PCB’s Recent Changes

Coaching sessions have been nothing less than disorganized. Following Mickey Arthur’s sacking ahead of the T20 World Cup, Mohammad Hafeez held charge for a while. The board then appointed Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie. Kirsten, the ex-head coach of South Africa, quit after six months as the white-ball coach. Gillespie resigned in December, soon after he was taken off the selection panel.

The upheaval hasn’t left the captaincy untouched, either. In the wake of a disastrous 2023 ODI World Cup, Shaheen Afridi replaced Babar Azam in T20Is, and Shan Masood replaced him in Tests. But the musical chairs went on—Shaheen was dumped after a single series, Babar was reinstated briefly, and Mohammad Rizwan replaced him before facing the flak after Pakistan’s humiliating Champions Trophy exit.

The instability has also been seen in performances. Pakistan lost a 0-2 series against New Zealand, including an 84-run loss in Hamilton. The last ODI will be held in Mount Maunganui on Saturday, when Pakistan hopes to prevent a clean sweep.

Since Saud Shakeel’s statement is still trending, it’s certain the demand for structural stability in Pakistan cricket is getting louder.

Naseem Shah to Ex-Cricketers: Roast My Bowling, Not My Hair

<excerpt>Pakistan pacer Naseem Shah urges critics to focus on performance-based feedback instead of personal remarks as the team struggles.
</excerpt>

Pakistan pacer Naseem Shah has condemned the increasing trend of personal attacks made on players, especially during trying times for the national side. His comments arrive at a time when Pakistan cricket has seen dismal performances recently, triggering severe criticism from former players and fans too. Naseem underlined that personal opinions can affect an individual’s confidence greatly and sought a constructive form of criticism.

Pakistan’s Woes in Terms of Performance and Accumulated Criticism

During Mohammad Rizwan’s leadership, Pakistan has encountered numerous setbacks in various big tournaments. The side was unable to advance past the group stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which was held on home soil. Before that, they were ousted early from both the 2023 World Cup in ODIs and the 2024 World Cup in T20s. In addition to this, Pakistan was last placed in the current 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle. Such disappointing performances have elicited stern criticism from ex-players and die-hard fans alike, who have chosen to abandon performance-based analysis and descend into personal attacks instead.

Rejection of Personal Criticism of Naseem Shah

In a recent video released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and reported by GeoSuper.tv, 22-year-old Naseem Shah spoke about the kind of criticism he and his teammates get regularly. While granting necessity for performance reports, he called for avoiding unjustified personal criticism.

“As a fan, if you watch cricket and someone says something that doesn’t make sense to you, you might think, ‘Oh, this person has never played cricket.’ When we go home, even our own brothers sometimes make comments that make us say, ‘Yeah, okay, they’ve never played cricket,'” Naseem Shah said.

He went on to say, “But when it comes to players who have actually played cricket for 10-15 years, you can discuss their performance—talk about how someone isn’t bowling well, isn’t batting well, or what mistakes they’re making. That’s fine. You can analyze what can be improved. However, I feel that getting too personal—commenting on how someone styles their hair or how they speak—crosses the line. These things hit personally.

Impact of Naseem Shah as a Concussion Substitute

Even though he was not part of the playing XI for the second ODI against New Zealand, Naseem acted as a concussion replacement for Haris Rauf and performed incredibly well. The young pacer scored a swift 51 off 44 balls in a game Pakistan ultimately lost by 84 runs. His unexpected contribution highlighted his pressure-fighting capability as well as being ability to act in the moment.

Fans’ Passion and Thin Line of Criticism

Despite being omitted from the T20I squad during the New Zealand series, he remains in Pakistan’s ODI setup. Talking about the kind of criticism players face, he recognized the immense passion fans have for cricket. “Fans make comments, and that’s understandable because they watch cricket passionately. Even when we were kids, we would criticize the team when they lost. But if you’ve played cricket for 15 years and still make comments that have nothing to do with the game, it does hurt,” he remarked.

With Pakistan trying to rebuild and return to the game in international cricket, Naseem’s words highlight the importance of separating good criticism from useless personal attacks. Being one of the young hopes of the team, he continues, demanding a healthier conversation of the sport and its players.

Champions Trophy: Pakistan Cricket Board Takes 85% Loss After Costly Spending

<excerpt>Pakistan’s first ICC tournament in 29 years turned into a financial disaster, with PCB losing USD 85 million after overspending on the event.
</excerpt>

Pakistan’s first international cricket tournament in 29 years, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 turned into a money debacle for the Pakistan Cricket Board rather than being an occasion of joy. The board was said to incur an 85% loss following the expenditure of a whopping INR 869 crore (USD 85 million) to organize the event with most of the matches being rain-washed out or conducted elsewhere.

Gigantic Investment, Small Returns of Champions Trophy

In a report by The Telegraph India, it was estimated that the Pakistan Cricket Board had spent PKR 18 billion (some USD 58 million) to upgrade three facilities—Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi. It was 50% more than the original budget. Another USD 40 million was also utilized for event planning. In spite of this, PCB could generate only USD 6 million as revenue from hosting fee, gate collections, and sponsorships, leaving them in a huge loss.

The tournament witnessed Pakistan’s national team play only one completed home match. Mohammad Rizwan-led Pakistan played against New Zealand in Lahore. Their match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was, however, abandoned because of rain, along with two other matches in the tournament. After losing to New Zealand and India, Pakistan was eliminated from the tournament, cutting their campaign short.

Players Suffer the Loss of Money

The fiscal loss had drastic consequences, particularly for local cricketers. According to Pakistani newspaper Dawn, PCB severely cut match fees for the National T20 Championship by half, lowering them from INR 40,000 to INR 10,000—a reduction of 90%. Reserve players’ payments were also slashed by 87.5%.

The report pointed out that while PCB officials kept getting fat paychecks, local cricketers received budget adjustments rather than five-star hotel accommodations, which indicated the financial burden on the board.

A Dawn source revealed, ” The PCB had recently reduced match fees from Rs 40,000 to Rs 10,000 without any official announcement…however PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi intervened, rejecting the decision and directing the board’s domestic cricket department to reassess the matter. While the PCB has yet to officially disclose the revised amount, sources indicate it has been set at Rs 30,000 per match — Rs 10,000 less than last year.’

Champions Trophy Performance and Fallout

Pakistan’s Champions Trophy tournament was short. They lost an early game of their Group A match to New Zealand in Lahore before moving to Dubai to face India next. Their third and last group stage match against Bangladesh was abandoned as it was raining. Having only one match at home that they completed, their tournament came to an end in disappointment.

The huge financial setback has made PCB wrestle with its national cricket setup. The failure of the Champions Trophy 2025 has sparked worries over whether Pakistan will be able to host international tournaments in the future successfully. It also calls into question the board’s financial management and whether it can efficiently handle large-scale cricket tournaments.

Future Implications for Pakistan Cricket

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 becoming a financial failure, the PCB will have to re-evaluate its hosting strategies for upcoming events. The losses have already reflected on player salaries and domestic tournament formats, and if the board does not revive soon, it might have lasting effects on Pakistan cricket.

The fiscal mismanagement of this event has precipitated controversies regarding PCB’s planning and administrative efficiency. In the future, the board will be required to implement tighter budgeting and revenue-raising measures to prevent such losses in future international events.

India won their third title, while Pakistan hosted its first global tournament in nearly 30 years.
</excerpt>

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has thanked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) for organising the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. Played over four venues, including Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi in Pakistan as well as Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the competition ran from 19 February to 9 March and was Pakistan’s first worldwide cricket event since 1996.

India’s third Champions Trophy came with a four-wicket win over New Zealand in the final at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

ICC hails the Event’s Organization by PCB and ECB

Given the coordination of the competition, Geoff Allardice, chief executive of ICC, noted Pakistan’s Board of Control Management’s hard work.

In an ICC release, Allardice stated, “We want to express our gratitude and warm applause to the Pakistan Cricket Board for their effective organization of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.”

He drew attention to the event’s importance by saying, “Given that this was the first international multi-team cricket tournament held in the nation since 1996, this event was of great relevance for the PCB. Everyone should be very proud of their work in updating the stadiums, getting the playing surfaces ready, distributing the matches, and accommodating the teams and visitors.”

Allardice also thanked the Emirates Cricket Board for arranging five of the games in Dubai and for further strong assistance to the ICC in organizing its major men’s and women’s events.

Champions Trophy 2025: A Victorious Show.

The competition exposed the exhilaration of ICC events and attracted many worldwide followers. Viewers followed the games at sites and on digital platforms, therefore underlining cricket’s worldwide attraction.

Allardice commended the eight teams that took part for keeping the competition interesting and congratulated India on their iconic victory.

He said, “Thanks to the eight teams competing for their interesting performance and congratulations to India for clinching a third Champions Trophy title in a memorable final.”

With Pakistan successfully hosting an international event after nearly three decades and Dubai still a major global cricket venue, the Champions Trophy 2025 establishes a robust precedent for next competitions.

He stated that Pakistan didn’t deserve representation and called for improvements in the nation’s cricketing performance.
</excerpt>

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal spoke on the controversy of the lack of a Pakistan representative at the prize distribution ceremony of the just-concluded Champions Trophy. In his opinion, Pakistan did not deserve to be at the ceremony, citing the country’s poor cricket performance.

Kamran Akmal Criticizes Pakistan’s Absence in Prize Ceremony

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is protesting against the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not including an official from the host country at the prize ceremony after India’s win over New Zealand in the final. Now, the PCB is asking the ICC for an official explanation about the matter.

PCB Chief Executive and tournament director Sumair Ahmad Syed attended the venue in Dubai. As PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was ill and could not attend, Sumair was the appointed representative. He was, however, nowhere to be found at the official ceremony, which caused an uproar from the PCB.

Akmal had this to say about the incident: “Pakistan’s cricket standards have gone down a lot, and hence this is not a nice thing.”.

The ICC showed us the mirror. The tournament’s director (Sumair) was there. He was available, and why wasn’t he in the ceremony? It is because we don’t deserve to be there. We are not playing good cricket. Minow teams have shown us the mirror,” Akmal stated on his YouTube channel.

“No one discussed how Pakistan hosted the tournament. If we play such cricket, we will be treated like this. If you play for yourself, there will be no respect,” he further added.

Miscommunication Between PCB and ICC?

Recent news indicates the PCB has also asked for a formal explanation from the ICC in this regard. The PCB did not notify the ICC that Sumair would be substituting Naqvi at the ceremony, ESPNcricinfo reports. The PCB, however, maintains that it was the ICC’s duty to call them for clarification.

While Pakistan looks for answers, this scandal has again brought to the fore the question of the country’s cricketing standards, with many voices, including Akmal’s, demanding drastic improvements.

</excerpt>

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has dismissed rumors suggesting that the name of former cricketer and ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan would be removed from one of the enclosures at the recently renovated Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This follows speculations that his name was being taken down due to his imprisonment on corruption charges.

In response to these rumors, a PCB official clarified, “No names have been changed or removed on enclosures,” reaffirming that the names of all stadium enclosures, including the one associated with Khan, will remain unchanged. The official also emphasized that the enclosure names will stay as they have always been.

Imran Khan’s name has been a permanent fixture at Gaddafi Stadium since 1992, with the “Imran Khan enclosure” being one of the VIP stands at the stadium. This controversy emerged amid the ongoing renovations at the stadium in preparation for the 2025 Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to begin on February 19.

Khan, who captained Pakistan to victory in the 1992 World Cup, has vehemently denied allegations of corruption. He has repeatedly claimed that the charges against him are politically motivated and part of a broader vendetta. Despite these denials, a recent court ruling found both Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi guilty of corruption and sentenced them to prison. Khan was sentenced to 14 years, while Bushra Bibi received a 7-year sentence. Currently, Khan remains incarcerated in Attock Jail in Punjab.

This clarification by the PCB comes as a relief to many of Khan’s supporters, who have been vocal in defending him against these charges. As the Champions Trophy approaches, the status of the Gaddafi Stadium, where Khan’s legacy is deeply ingrained, continues to remain a point of public interest.

</excerpt>

Pakistan batter Saim Ayub underwent assessments with orthopedic specialists in London on Saturday to evaluate the severity of his ankle injury. While a clear timeline for his recovery remains uncertain, it may take another week to determine his availability for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy next month.

Renowned orthopedic surgeons Dr. David Redfern and Dr. Lucky Jeyaseelan examined Saim’s condition. According to a source close to the player, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is highly optimistic about his recovery, particularly for the high-stakes Champions Trophy match against India scheduled for February 23 in Dubai.

“Even if the doctors conclude he won’t recover in time for Pakistan’s opening game against New Zealand on February 19 in Karachi, but could be fit for the India match, the selectors and PCB are willing to take the risk,” the source revealed.

Saim had been initially advised six weeks of rest for his injury, but the PCB sent him to London for consultations with top specialists, emphasizing their commitment to getting him fit for the marquee event and especially for the India clash.

The specialists have ruled out both invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, stating that Saim’s injury can be treated with physiotherapy, medication, and rest. However, the exact duration of his rehabilitation period will be decided based on reports expected next week.

“For now, the findings suggest that Saim can recover through non-surgical means, but we’ll know more about the rehab timeline soon,” the source added.

The PCB plans to include Saim in their preliminary Champions Trophy squad, as changes can be made until February 12 before finalizing the 15-member team. Saim will remain in London for the next week to determine whether his rehabilitation should continue in Lahore at the PCB’s high-performance center or in London for better care.

</excerpt>

Despite worries about the readiness of its venues, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is resolute that the ICC Champions Trophy will remain in Pakistan. The three key venues – Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, National Stadium in Karachi, and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium – were scheduled for completion by December 31, with the ICC anticipated to take control by February 12, a week prior to the start of the tournament. Nevertheless, delays have left the venues significantly unprepared, increasing the likelihood of moving the event to the UAE, where India’s matches are planned to occur in Dubai.

A PCB insider highlighted that the ICC’s continuous oversight, with a large delegation monitoring broadcasting, hospitality, and event operations, signifies that the tournament is still progressing as planned. “The PCB has invested almost PKR 12 billion enhancing our stadiums to render them suitable for an event like the Champions Trophy, which was granted to us,” stated the insider.

The PCB released a statement to counter misleading media claims that had questioned the event’s readiness, asserting that such conjecture could lead to confusion and disruption. “The stadium’s work is being meticulously supervised by the PCB, and they will be prepared to host the CT matches on schedule,” the insider confirmed.

The ICC delegation present in Pakistan has not yet voiced any concerns regarding the preparations. The tournament is scheduled to commence on February 19, featuring defending champions Pakistan against New Zealand in Karachi. India, citing security and political concerns, will conduct all their matches in Dubai.

</excerpt>

The Champions Trophy 2025 schedule remains pending as the ICC’s board meeting with broadcasters Star Sports was postponed to Saturday, according to PTI. Originally set for Thursday, the meeting was meant to discuss the support for the ‘Hybrid Model’ under newly-elected ICC Chair Jay Shah. BCCI Joint Secretary Devajit Lon Saikia represented India, while officials from England and Wales Cricket, Cricket Australia, and Cricket West Indies were absent. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also did not attend.

Reports suggest that the ICC Board is expected to reject PCB’s demands for a hybrid model for future ICC events in India. The PCB may, however, receive compensation. Broadcasters have made it clear that a Champions Trophy without India is not feasible and that an India-Pakistan group match is crucial for revenue.

On the same day, Jay Shah visited the ICC headquarters in Dubai for the first time as chairperson, meeting with the Board of Directors, which included members from Bangladesh, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Malaysia, and the UAE.

The Champions Trophy, scheduled for Pakistan between January and March 2025, has faced delays in its schedule due to security concerns raised by the Indian government regarding sending their team to Pakistan. The BCCI proposed a ‘Hybrid Model’ where India’s matches would be held in the UAE, but the PCB rejected this idea.

</excerpt>

Talks between the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the Champions Trophy have hit another roadblock. While there was hope after the PCB reportedly agreed to a hybrid hosting model—where India’s matches would take place in Dubai under certain conditions—the BCCI has rejected these conditions.

The PCB’s proposal included extending the hybrid model to ICC events hosted in India, but the BCCI dismissed this demand, citing the absence of any “security threat” in India. According to The Telegraph India, “Sources told The Telegraph on Tuesday that the BCCI has sent a clear message to the ICC brass in this regard leading to a fresh impasse. The BCCI’s contention is simple – there is no security threat in India and hence no question of accepting such an arrangement.”

The BCCI also reiterated its earlier decision not to send the Indian team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy due to security concerns. India is set to host several major ICC tournaments in the coming years, including the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025, the T20 World Cup in 2026 (jointly with Sri Lanka), the 2029 Champions Trophy, and the 2031 ODI World Cup.

Efforts are underway to resolve the standoff, with the ICC board expected to reconvene soon. However, the PCB risks losing its hosting rights for the Champions Trophy 2025 if it maintains its stance. Reports indicate the PCB had also threatened to pull out of the tournament entirely should the ICC move it to another country.

</excerpt>

The International Cricket Council (ICC) informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during a board meeting on November 19 that a hybrid hosting model is the only viable solution for the Champions Trophy 2025, following India’s refusal to grant its team permission to travel to Pakistan.

Despite the PCB’s insistence on hosting all matches in Pakistan, the ICC clarified that this arrangement is not feasible. The PCB has requested a day to consult with its government, and further discussions are scheduled for November 30. Sources suggest the PCB may ultimately accept the hybrid model after consultations.

Potential Outcomes:

Acceptance of the Hybrid Model: India’s matches, one semi-final, and the final would be held in Dubai, while the remaining matches would take place in Pakistan. PCB retains partial hosting rights.

Rejection of the Hybrid Model: If Pakistan remains firm, the ICC could revoke its hosting rights, awarding the tournament to another country. This could lead to Pakistan boycotting the event.

The meeting, attended by ICC members virtually, failed to reach a consensus. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi reiterated Pakistan’s stance against the hybrid model, stating, “Pakistan will not agree.”

Pakistan secured hosting rights for the Champions Trophy in 2021 and has been renovating its stadiums. However, recent political protests in Islamabad, which led to Sri Lanka A cutting short their tour, have raised security concerns.

Pakistan had previously hosted the 2023 Asia Cup under a hybrid model, accommodating India’s refusal to play on Pakistani soil. India and Pakistan last played bilateral cricket in the 2012-13 season, with India last visiting Pakistan during the 2008 Asia Cup.

However, an ICC source confirmed that an internal meeting might be held on Tuesday to address the issue, explaining, “It is a virtual meeting of the Executive Board members to resolve the Champions Trophy schedule once and for all.”

According to this source, it is due to a direct pressure from the broadcaster to finalize the schedule that the ICC agreed to meet and may vote to host the event in Pakistan, move it, or implement the Hybrid Model as suggested by the BCCI, with India playing all of its matches there.

The official mentioned that the PCB had taken a principled stance on hosting the event in Pakistan and wouldn’t compromise even under the Hybrid Model, agreeing to play its group match against India in Dubai. It has been reported that there’s a proposal to keep Pakistan and India in separate pools; however, according to sources, broadcasters are averse to this view as it would kill their revenue potential.

If agreed upon, India would play their matches in the UAE, while other fixtures would remain in Pakistan. The tournament schedule is anticipated shortly, with multiple reports suggesting it will run from February 19-29, 2025.
Responding to questions about back-channel diplomacy regarding cricketing ties, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, clarified: “There is no back channel with India to specifically discuss the Champions Trophy and bilateral cricket between Pakistan and India.” She reiterated that “Pakistan has always said that sports should not be politicized.”

The PCB remains in touch with the ICC to finalize arrangements for the tournament, including participation from other nations. For further details, Baloch advised referring to the PCB.

</excerpt>

News is emerging regarding the issue surrounding the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and that severe financial penalties may be accompanied by a PCB boycott based on India’s insistence to play at a neutral venue. As it has been specified by the ICC that Pakistan would host the Champions Trophy, the concerns for the participation of India have been widely in the media due to strained diplomatic ties.

The ICC has just confirmed this to the PCB in an official notice. The PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, has already said that Pakistan does not plan to opt for a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, reports state that Pakistan’s government is now weighing up the option of withdrawing itself totally from the tournament.

After boycotting the championship, as sources tell Cricbuzz, it will be risking not receiving the full hosting fee amounting to $65 million. On top of that, even the funding from the ICC will be reduced. “The act of the BCCI refusing to travel means the PCB cannot do much else but organize the event using a hybrid model,” sources said. According to PTI, if this model is finalized, ICC would ensure PCB gets the “full hosting fees” and that the chance of hosting “the majority of the matches” remains in the hands of PCB.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has insisted the PCB version, however, while speaking at a press conference stated that there was no official communication from BCCI regarding any issue. * “We have a clear stance that they must give it to us in writing if they [the Indian cricket board] have any issues. Till today, we have not spoken about any hybrid model, but we’re ready to speak on this”* Naqvi remarked while adding that he is yet to receive any letter from the ICC or the BCCI.

Conversely, India has not traveled to Pakistan since the notorious 2008 Mumbai attacks and has only shared matches with this team in ICC events.

</excerpt>

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) requesting a written confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding their refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, along with a detailed explanation for their decision.

The ICC informed the PCB last Friday that the Indian government has not granted permission for the Indian team to travel to Pakistan for the tournament, which is scheduled to take place across three venues in Pakistan from February 9. However, the PCB insists on receiving a written confirmation from the BCCI regarding their inability to participate, along with a justification.

This communication from the ICC arrived just three days before the official launch event for the Champions Trophy, which was set to begin a 100-day countdown in Lahore. The event has now been postponed, leaving the future of the eight-team tournament in doubt.

The PCB has made it clear that it stands by its position of holding the entire tournament in Pakistan, with a senior PCB official telling ESPNcricinfo that there is “no chance” of considering a hybrid model, similar to the one used for the Asia Cup in 2023. This model would allow India to play their games outside Pakistan. Despite speculation about the UAE being used as a secondary venue, the PCB has firmly rejected this idea. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi from February 19 to March 9.

The PCB is also realizing that with the involvement of the Pakistan government, decisions on hosting and any potential hybrid model will likely not be in their hands, but will instead be managed by the government.

The PCB’s firm stance stems partly from their frustration over last year’s events. Despite being forced to use a hybrid model for the Asia Cup, Pakistan agreed to travel to India for the World Cup after consultation with their government, which ultimately granted permission despite significant opposition. The hope was that India would reciprocate by visiting Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

The same government remains in place, and Mohsin Naqvi, the country’s interior minister, now serves as the PCB chairman. The PCB has also highlighted that the tournament was awarded to Pakistan three years ago, with no objections raised at that time or in subsequent meetings. In October, the PCB reportedly provided a progress update at ICC board meetings, including plans for the 100-day launch event, without any concerns being raised.

The ICC has been contacted for further comment.

</excerpt>

Gary Kirsten has resigned from his position as Pakistan’s white-ball coach just six months after his appointment, citing a growing rift with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The 56-year-old South African, renowned for coaching India to their 2011 ODI World Cup victory, was appointed by the PCB in late April 2024.

Reports indicate that tensions began to surface

Reports indicate that tensions began to surface when the national selection committee was granted exclusive responsibility for team selections, leaving no room for input from Kirsten or the team captain. This lack of collaboration has been a significant point of contention. Additionally, Pakistan’s Test coach, Jason Gillespie, expressed frustration over the reduction of his role to merely a match-day analyst, which he claims was not part of the original agreement.

Although Kirsten has not publicly commented on the situation, sources from ESPNCricinfo suggest he is deeply dissatisfied with the recent changes. His displeasure was further exacerbated when Mohammad Rizwan was appointed as the new white-ball captain without any consultation with Kirsten, who was not present in the country at the time of the announcement.

The discord has reportedly arisen not just between Kirsten and the PCB, but also with Gillespie, particularly after the board withdrew their selection powers. Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, and Hassan Cheema were recently added to the selection committee following Pakistan’s loss in the first Test against England, with Javed expected to take over as the white-ball coach on a long-term basis.

Prior to his role in Pakistan, Kirsten served as a batting coach for the Indian Premier League franchise Gujarat Titans. His resignation comes just a week before Pakistan’s upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, set to begin on November 4, 2024. The team recently celebrated a 2-1 Test series victory over England, which further complicates the timing of his departure.

</excerpt>

Pakistan’s hopes of hosting the prestigious ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been severely affected by a recent terror attack in Karachi. A deadly explosion near Jinnah International Airport on Sunday night (October 6) left two Chinese nationals dead and over 10 others injured. The blast, which targeted a convoy of Chinese engineers working on a power project, is being seen as a significant blow to Pakistan’s chances of successfully hosting the mega cricketing event next year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had been working tirelessly to ensure that the country remains safe and stable in the lead-up to the ICC Champions Trophy, which was scheduled for February-March 2025. However, this latest “terrorist attack” could seriously jeopardize Pakistan’s chances of hosting top cricketing nations, with India’s participation now hanging in the balance.

Chinese Embassy Condemns Attack; BLA Claims Responsibility

The explosion, reportedly a suicide attack carried out by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), targeted Chinese engineers involved in a critical power project in Sindh province. The BLA’s Majeed Brigade has claimed responsibility for the attack, further complicating the situation. The Chinese embassy in Pakistan condemned the incident, vowing to “severely punish the murderer” responsible for the attack, while reiterating their concern over Chinese nationals’ safety in the country.

The attack comes at a time when security in Pakistan is under intense scrutiny, with the PCB under pressure to guarantee the safety of international players and officials ahead of the Champions Trophy.

India’s Participation in Champions Trophy 2025 in Doubt

India’s reluctance to send its cricket team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy has already been a point of contention, and this latest incident seems to have further sealed the Men in Blue’s fate. While seven other participating nations had given the green light to travel to Pakistan, India’s government is now unlikely to clear the team’s participation given the current security concerns.

The terror attack is expected to prompt other cricket boards to reconsider their decision to send their teams to Pakistan, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) likely to address the issue in its next meeting. The PCB now faces an uphill task of convincing international boards about the safety and security of players, with the future of Pakistan as a host for the Champions Trophy hanging in the balance.

PCB Faces Uncertainty Ahead of Champions Trophy

The PCB has yet to issue a statement on the attack’s impact on their hosting rights for the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, the England cricket team, already in Pakistan for a Test series, remains unaffected by the blast, though the incident has undoubtedly raised questions about future international events in the country. The coming weeks will be critical for the PCB as it navigates the challenges posed by the latest terror attack and the global response to it.

</excerpt>

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has left it up to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to convince the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to send its team to Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in the first quarter of next year. According to a PCB source, while the budget for the Champions Trophy was approved at the recent ICC meetings in Colombo, the schedule and format didn’t come up for discussion at all.

“The PCB now has done what was required of it as hosts of the Champions Trophy. It has submitted the draft schedule and format for the event and also submitted budget for the event,” a PCB insider said.

“It is now up to the ICC how soon they circulate, discuss and finalise the schedule of the Champions Trophy. The PCB for its part in the draft schedule has suggested hosting all of India’s games in Lahore including a semi-final (if India qualifies) and final,” he added.

Another source said that the PCB has already submitted all details in its expression of interest document with the ICC as hosts of the Champions Trophy.

“The PCB for its part has given in writing to the ICC about the tax modalities, venue selections and clearance from its government for the Indian team to be hosted in Pakistan for the mega event,” he noted.

The PCB had initially submitted its expression of interest in hosting the event back in 2021 during the tenure of Ehsan Mani as Chairman of the board.

The ICC awarded hosting rights in 2022 and later on when Ramiz Raja was PCB Chairman, the board submitted its final documentation for the host agreement to sign with the ICC.

The source revealed that the PCB chief, Mohsin Naqvi, didn’t have any formal meeting with the BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, or any other BCCI officials on the sidelines of the ICC meetings but the exchanges between Naqvi and Shah were cordial during the meetings.

The PCB has now left it up to the ICC to finalise and announce the tournament schedule and also get confirmation from the BCCI whether the Indian team will travel to Pakistan.

The ICC has kept supplementary expenses in its tournament budget to meet any situation where the Indian team has to play its matches outside Pakistan.

The BCCI has always steadfastly maintained that playing cricket in Pakistan is completely a government call and even the 2023 ODI Asia Cup, which was hosted by PCB, witnessed India playing all its games in Sri Lanka based on a ‘Hybrid Model’.

According to the draft schedule, all of India’s games including a possible semi-final and final have been scheduled in Lahore. The India vs Pakistan marquee match has been scheduled for March 1.

</excerpt>

Amidst BCCI making its decision clear that India won’t travel to Pakistan for Champions Trophy 2025 and suggesting a hybrid model, former PCB chief Khalid Mahmood admits that India might not come for the ICC tournament.

Speaking on cricket Pakistan Mahmood says ‘There are very, very slim chances they will agree to play in Pakistan. India is the richest cricket board and carries a lot of clout. If they don’t send their team to Pakistan I foresee even countries like Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh following their path.’

Moreover, he also believes, that it would not be beneficial for Pakistan if utilize tit-for-tat strategy against BCCI.

Elaborating more on his point he said ‘Look the thing is at this level you can only lobby and try to convince other boards to be on your side. India has too much clout in the ICC it would do no good for Pakistan to adopt a tit-for-tat strategy. Thing is when the BCCI says it can’t send its team and will play its matches outside Pakistan, it does reduce the purpose for Pakistan of hosting an ICC event.’

However, according to media reports, Pakistan is in no mood to change its position on champions trophy matter. It wants to be ‘Pakistan’s event in Pakistan’.

Moreover, the PCB has already given its draft to ICC. In this draft, India’s matches are also included. As per given schedule, India’s matches are reportedly given to Lahore, which also includes semi-final and final.

The high-profile India vs Pakistan match will likely be held on March 1. As for champions trophy, it is scheduled on February 19 in Karachi and final will be on March 9 at Lahore.

</excerpt>

The PCB would want a proper documented assurance from the BCCI that their government is not permitting the Indian team to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns if they do not want to come for next year’s Champions Trophy, a source in the Pakistan Cricket Board has told PTI. The host board wants the controversy sorted out quickly as the Champions Trophy is scheduled for February-March next year.

Although the “Hybrid Model”—by which India has its matches staged in United Arab Emirates—is not scheduled for discussion at the ICC annual conference in Colombo on July 19, extra funds against the possibility of such an eventuality have been kept aside by the international organization in case the tournament needs to be split between two countries.

“If the India government declines permission, it has to be in writing and it is mandatory on the BCCI to provide that letter to the ICC now,” the PCB source working closely with the organizing committee told PTI. “It is a fact that we are insistent that the BCCI must inform the ICC about its travel plans to Pakistan at least 5-6 months before the tournament and in writing,” the top PCB source also stated.

Even during the PCB-hosted 2023 ODI Asia Cup, where India played all their matches in Sri Lanka using a “Hybrid Model,” the BCCI has made it clear time and again that playing cricket in Pakistan is totally dependent on government decision.

The PCB has already submitted its draft schedule to the ICC, which includes all of India’s games with a potential semifinal and final slotted in Lahore. The tiff between the arch-rivals India and Pakistan will take place on March 1. This tournament is set to start on February 19 in Karachi and will finish on March 9 in Lahore with the final. If there is bad weather, March 10 will be taken as a reserve date for what would have been the final game. There will also be a couple of games in Rawalpindi.

BCCI sources have confirmed that there are no chances of touring Pakistan at the moment, and the ICC has made a provision for additional money in case any contingency plans have to be made. “The ICC Management is recommending additional costs just in case it is necessary to play some matches outside Pakistan if such a situation arises later on,” the source confirmed.

</excerpt>

The Indian cricket team fondly called Men In Blue is not likely to visit Pakistan for the ICC champions trophy 2025.

According to available information, any decision regarding India travel comes under the government.

Talking about travel status, sportstak’s source said ‘While the details of the tournament have not yet been discussed, it is highly unlikely that the Indian team will travel to Pakistan. Ultimately, the decision rests with the Indian government. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) plans to raise this issue at the upcoming ICC meeting in Sri Lanka this month.’

Furthermore, the source also revealed, that the government decision on this matter will be final and more details will be revealed in the next ICC meeting.

Meanwhile a couple of days ago, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has provided its draft for the upcoming champions trophy. Under this draft, seven matches have been given to Lahore, five to Rawalpindi and three to Karachi.

Reportedly, the iconic India-Pakistan will take place at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 1.

Quoting PTI, the ICC source said, ‘The PCB has submitted the draft of the 15-match ICC Champions Trophy. Seven games in Lahore, three in Karachi, and five in Rawalpindi.’

</excerpt>

In the aftermath of Pakistan’s disappointing T20 World Cup performance in the USA, significant changes are anticipated within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The team failed to advance beyond the league stage, prompting PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi to consider drastic measures to address the indiscipline and lackluster performance that plagued the squad.

A reliable source within the PCB revealed that Naqvi is particularly dismayed with the actions of certain senior officials, whom he holds responsible for the current state of affairs. “You can expect the PCB to lose senior management level officials and also enforce some strict policies for the players in future,” the source stated.

Central to the controversy is the decision to allow players to bring their families along for the tournament. This move has drawn significant criticism, with players reportedly bringing not just their wives and children, but also their parents and siblings, who all stayed in the team hotel. The PCB chairman’s discontent has been further fueled by revelations that some senior officials—described by the source as more fans than professionals—approved these arrangements, thereby undermining team discipline.

As part of a broader clean-up operation, the PCB is likely to introduce a stringent code of conduct for players, including a policy decision to prohibit players from having their families accompany them to major events such as ICC tournaments. This move aims to restore focus and discipline within the team, which Naqvi sees as crucial for future success.

The PCB chief has also demanded a comprehensive performance assessment report from all senior management officials. His dissatisfaction extends beyond the World Cup debacle to include the slow progress in preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy, which Pakistan is set to host early next year.

In light of these developments, the PCB is on the brink of a significant restructuring, with expectations of high-level dismissals and the imposition of stricter regulations to prevent a recurrence of the issues that contributed to Pakistan’s lackluster World Cup campaign.

During Maroof’s tenure, Pakistan couldn’t advance past the initial stage in the recently concluded tournament. Maroof, who is also an all-rounder, captained the Pakistan side for almost six years. Still, the team suffered defeats in three out of four group matches, including a tense encounter against traditional rivals India

</excerpt>

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Zaka Ashraf has been accused of “flagrant misdoings and unconstitutional decisions” as his tenure comes to an end, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo. A report by ESPNcricinfo revealed that these allegations came from Zulfiqar Malik, a management committee member of the PCB, who addressed Zaka Ashraf and the management committee through an email. Additionally, copies of this email were forwarded to Pakistan’s Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) and the Prime Minister’s Office.

In his email, Malik pointed out that various wrongdoings had taken place over time without consulting or obtaining approval from most members of the PCB. “I have noted some flagrant misdoings and unconstitutional decisions by management that I wish to bring on record to absolve myself from the unconstitutional decisions and wrongdoings that have taken place over the period of time without consultation or approval of most members,” Malik wrote, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. Malik argued that the PCB chief made many long-term decisions that violated the committee’s mandate.

Some of these decisions included the appointment of former chief selector Inzamam ul Haq, as well as the appointments of several directors, consultants, and officials without the consultation or approval of most members. He also raised concerns about budget approvals, legal counsel hiring, and the sidelining of key officials.

In response, the PCB defended its decision-making processes, stating that every decision adheres to the constitution and is intended to ensure the day-to-day operations of the PCB continue without obstacles. In reply, the PCB stated that every decision is made in accordance with the constitution and defended the nature of decision-making, as confirmed by ESPNcricinfo.

The email from Malik was sent on October 3, and a week later, the IPC requested a comprehensive report from the PCB regarding its operations, including updates on election progress. However, the PCB has yet to provide the requested report. Zaka Ashraf’s four-month tenure as the PCB chief is set to conclude on November 5.
