August 16, 2024, 6:51 pm

‘Stree 2’, which hit screens on August 15, has opened to a sensational response at the domestic box office and received rave reviews from fans. The horror-comedy collected Rs 55.4 crore on the first day to emerge as the best opener of 2024. Additionally, it collected nearly 9 crore through paid previews on Wednesday (August 14). Its total collection stands at 64 crore. This, however, is not the only to film to collect more than Rs 50 crore in Hindi on the first day. Here is a look at some films that achieved this feat.

Stree 2 (2024)

Directed by Amar Kaushik, ‘Stree 2’ is a horror-comedy that centres on a headless demon who terrorises Chanderi by kidnapping “progressive” women. It has a stellar cast headlined by Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, and Abhishek Banerjee. The second installment of the Stree franchise netted Rs 54.4 crore on August 15 and outperformed biggies like ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Animal’

Animal (2023)

Sandeep Vanga Reddy’s polarising action drama, ‘Animal’ collected a sensational Rs 54.75 crore on the first day even though it was meant for “adults only”. The film went on to become a game-changer for Ranbir Kapoor despite mixed reviews. This was Sandeep’s second Hindi film after the equally controversial ‘Kabir Singh’.

Jawan (2023)

The Shah Rukh Khan-led actioner collected Rs 65 crore on its opening day and went on to emerge as a runaway hit at the box office, The film was directed by Atlee and marked his Bollywood debut. The flick featured SRK in the lead role and catered to a mass audience. The cast included Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara, and Priyamani.

Pathaan (2023)

The spy-thriller, which was a part of Yash Raj Films’ Spy Universe, earned Rs 55 crore on its first day and went on to become a blockbuster. It featured a star-studded cast headlined by Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, and Salman Khan.

KGF Chapter 2 (2022)

Thugs Of Hindostan (2018)

Salman, Shah Rukh to Ranbir: Bollywood stars who ruled the big screen in 2023

December 29, 2023, 1:15 pm

Bollywood fans had a great year in 2023 thanks to the incredible performances of superstars like Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, and Shah Rukh Khan, who ruled the silver screen with their hit movies. Therefore, before saying goodbye to this year, viewers—especially die-hard moviegoers—should look at the male actors who dazzled them with their acting skills and helped to make 2023 a memorable year for film.

1. Shah Rukh Khan
2023 was undoubtedly the year of Shah Rukh Khan. After a hiatus of four years, SRK made a grand comeback with Sidharth Anand’s ‘Pathaan’ in January. In the film, SRK donned an action avatar and left everyone in awe. The film broke several records at the box office and managed to grab a name in the list of one of the highest-grossing films in the Indian film industry. Remember the clamorous death knell tolling for the Hindi film industry all through 2021 and 2022? His film literally ended Bollywood’s dry spell at the box office. ‘Pathaan’ will always remain special for SRK and his fans as the film marked SRK’s first hit after his sabbatical of four years post delivering a series of duds like ‘Zero’ and ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’.

2. Sunny Deol
Sunny Deol witnessed mega success after over two decades with ‘Gadar 2’. The film saw Sunny reprising his role as Tara Singh from the iconic movie ‘Gadar’ (2001). The audience accepted the sequel with open arms and let Sunny’s “dhai kilo ka hath” create history at the box office. After ‘Pathaan’, Gadar 2′ became one of the fastest movies to reach the Rs 500 crore club.

3. Salman Khan
Bollywood’s bhaijaan Salman Khan came up with two films this year. His film ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ failed to impress the audience but ‘Tiger 3’ was enough to let Salman’s contemporaries know that he is the ultimate ‘Tiger’ of Bollywood. The film, which was directed by Maneesh Sharma, grossed Rs 466.63 crore at the box office.

4. Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir is one of the best actors in Hindi cinema. With his versatile acting skills, he has always proved that he is the true heir to Raj Kapoor’s legacy. He can step into any character and make it believable. ‘Animal’ is no exception. He once again left everyone surprised with his powerful performance. ‘Animal’ is now Ranbir’s biggest-ever hit, but has also been criticised for its depiction of misogyny. ‘Kabir Singh’ fame Sandeep Reddy Vanga directed the film.
Before showcasing his gangster role in ‘Animal’, Ranbir revived his chocolate boy avatar with ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’. Released in March, the film had a successful run at the box office.
It has truly been a special year for Ranbir, who has delivered two back-to-back hits.

The Best films of 2023: Shubhra Gupta’s list includes Jawan and Pathaan, OMG 2, and 12th Fail

December 17, 2023, 4:32 pm

Thus the year 2023 is almost over. And to be honest, not a single high-end, star-studded Bollywood production this year was good enough to be admitted into the category of pure excellence. With considerable difficulty, I must admit, the movies that have made it to my Top 5 list are those that changed the tone, attempted something novel or novel-ish, or resurrected a once-defeated movie star. However there are always disclaimers. Bollywood made more money this year than it has in the previous few combined, especially in 2021–2022, when it was suffering from the triple whammy of closed theaters during COVID.
