Many Twitter users point out that RRR was a Telugu language film and not a Bollywood film. Besides RRR’s Naatu Naatu, other Indian contenders at the Oscars 2023 were Shaunak Sen’s documentary feature All That Breathes, which lost out to Navalny, and the Kartiki Gonsalves-directed documentary short The Elephant Whisperers, which walked away with the golden statuette in the category.

The film is an epic drama, co-written and directed by V. Vijayendra Prasad and S.S. Rajamouli. It portrays the fictional tale of two revolutionary figures, Alluri Sitarama, and Komaram Bheem. The film was released on March 25th, 2022, and went on to become the third highest-grossing Indian film globally.

Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles saw the biggest night on Sunday, 12 March as it held the 95th Academy Awards. Ever since the nominations for Oscars 2023 has been announced, everyone was looking forward for the event including myself.

The event was hosted by the comedian Jimmy Kimmel. Deepika Padukone took the stage to introduce the musical performance by Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj and become the third Indian woman to present at the Academy Awards after Persis Khambatta and Priyanka Chopra.

Apart from Deepika, the other presenter includes Halle Berry, John Travolta, Harrison Ford, among others. The event was aired live on Disney+ Hotstar at 5.30 p.m. Indian Standard Time on 13 March, 2023. Here’s the complete list of winners for the Oscars 2023:

India wins Oscar for Elephant Whisperers

In the category of “Best Documentary Short Film,” the Indian documentary “Elephant Whisperers” received the Oscar. Director Kartiki Gonsalves and producer Guneet Monga walked the stage to accept the award. The documentary triumphed against “Stranger At The Gate,” “How Do You Measure A Year,” “Haul Out,” and other films.
In Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, a family adopts two juvenile elephants that are abandoned. This is the plot of the movie.
Guneet Monga has taken the Oscar to India before, so this isn’t the first time. The documentary “Period. End of Sentence” by Guneet Monga won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2019.

India makes history after winning much-coveted Oscar for Naatu Naatu, Elephant Whisperers

India created a historic moment at the 95th Academy Awards on Monday morning (India Time) as the nation won its first ever Academy Award in the category of “best original song for SSS Rajamouli’s directed movie RRR.

Notably, RRR won the Oscar in the category of Best Original Song for “Naatu Naatu”. During the Academy Awards, actress Deepika Padukone took to the stage as she introduced the musical performance by Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj.

The actress was revealed as one of the presenters in the first round of announcements. Apart from Deepika, other presenters at the Oscars 2023 include Halle Berry, John Travolta, Harrison Ford, and others.

Deepika became the third Indian to attend the event after Persis Khambatta and Priyanka Chopra, which was held at the Dolby Theatres in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Naatu Naatu Performance at Oscars

The actress opened the performance as she expressed that “Do you know Naatu? Because if you don’t, then you are about to.” After which, Indian reality TV star and American dancer Lauren Gottlieb took over the stage.

Both musicians, Kala Bhairav and Rahul Sipligunj, were seen dressed in traditional attire, Black Kurta and Dhoti. The two sent chills down everyone’s spine as they sang the electrifying global smash hit song live on the stage of the 95th Academy Awards.

Before Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava earned a standing ovation for their electrifying performance, Deepika announced the performance and even gave a special mention briefing the audience about the song amidst loud cheers.
She said, “An irresistibly catchy chorus, electrifying beats and killer dance moves to match have made this song a global sensation. It plays during a pivotal scene in ‘RRR’, a movie about the friendship between real-life Indian revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at the now-infamous moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock during last year’s Academy Awards in his opening monologue, Page Six reported.
“We know this is a special night for you. We want you to have fun. We want you to feel safe … and, most importantly, we want me to feel safe,” Kimmel, 55, told the star-studded audience.
“So, we have strict policies in place: If anyone in this theatre commits an act of violence at any point in this show, you will be awarded the Oscar for Best Actor and permitted to give a 19-minute-long speech,” he continued, referencing the Academy’s controversial decision not to kick Smith out of the auditorium in the wake of his actions — and then honor him for “King Richard” moments after the incident.
“If anything unpredictable or violent happens during this ceremony, just do what you did last year — nothing,” the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host quipped. “Sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug.”
