</excerpt>

Residents of multiple high-rise societies in Noida Sectors 150 and 151 have decided to stage a protest against the government’s decision to build a dumping yard in Sector 150. The residents, predominantly salaried professionals including journalists, will gather at Bhagat Singh Park in Sector 150 on Saturday to peacefully protest against the government’s proposal.

The residents argue that the construction of the dumping yard in an area surrounded by multiple residential societies would have severe adverse effects on the quality of life in both sectors. They also highlight concerns about the proximity of schools and play schools to the proposed site, fearing the negative impact on children’s health and well-being.

Concerned about this , they have chosen to protest against the move of Noida authority.

Residents of Jaypee Aman located in Sector 151 who are at the forefront of this protest, told the Daily Guardian that the proposed site for the dumping yard is located near several high-rise residential societies, housing nearly one lakh people and setting up a dumpsite in this area will not only pose serious health risks but will also be an eyesore and a source of significant health hazards.

The decision to take out the silent protest was decided by them after getting no clear assurance from the officials at the Noida authority.

According to them they had met Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M and Additional CEO Vandana Tripathi, requesting them to abandon the plan and relocate the dumpsite to another area. However, the residents claimed that they did not receive a favorable response from the officials. The residents said that they will be exploring other avenues including requesting the Prime Minister for his intervention if the authority continues ahead with their proposal to construct the dumpyard.

Recently, a massive fire at a dumpsite at sector 32A of Noida had occurred. Following the incident, the Noida Authority ordered its relocation— to a one-acre vacant plot in Sector 117 which was strongly resisted by the locals. Subsequently the authority decided to shift the same to Sector 150.

It is pertinent to mention that the Noida Authority had already issued a tender to select an agency for disposal of horticulture waste at sector 150.

District Magistrate (DM) of Gautam Buddha Nagar Manish Verma, told the Daily Guardian that he is actively monitoring the situation and has been in discussions with the Noida Authority to find a resolution to the issue raised by the residents including of Jaypee Aman and assured that efforts would be made to identify an alternative location.

“I will also inform officials at the Noida authority about the issue that has been brought to his attention”, he said.

Gautam Buddha Nagar Member of Parliament Mahesh Sharma told the Daily Guardian that he is aware of the concerns raised by the residents of Sectors 150 and 151, who had approached him seeking his intervention. “I have conveyed their grievances to the Noida Authority CEO but have not yet received a response, ” he said while expressing optimism that the authority would soon arrive at a decision that will not negatively impact the residents.

Noida CEO Lokesh was not available for comment and the person who answered his call requested the newspaper to speak to another official in the authority.

Anand Mohan Singh, Director of Horticulture at the Noida Authority, while speaking to this newspaper, stated that the authority was not going to construct a dumping yard at the site but it was used for disposal of horticulture waste. He emphasized that there has been a misunderstanding among the residents, who have mistaken the green waste disposal area for a full-fledged dumping yard. He added that the authorities would make efforts to communicate this clarification to the residents and assure them that the site would not pose any harm to them. However, if residents continue to oppose the project, the matter will be discussed with higher officials of the Noida Authority for further deliberation.

</excerpt>

The rise of wellness influencers has greatly impacted social media platforms, especially regarding health and lifestyle trends. While many of these influencers provide valuable information on improving physical and mental well-being, a growing concern is their role in spreading vaccine misinformation. Research suggests that wellness influencers, particularly those with large followings, are showing higher rates of vaccine opposition on social media, which may have serious implications for public health.

The Rise of Wellness Influencers

Wellness influencers are individuals who have gained a significant following on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube by promoting lifestyles that focus on physical and mental well-being. They often share tips on diet, exercise, mindfulness, and alternative medicine, establishing themselves as trusted voices in the wellness space. These influencers are not limited to certified health professionals but also include individuals without formal medical qualifications.

Over the years, wellness influencers have gained a significant influence over their audiences, often shaping their followers’ health-related decisions. Their posts are highly engaging, offering personal anecdotes, inspirational messages, and curated advice on achieving optimal well-being. In many cases, their ability to connect with audiences in an approachable, relatable way has contributed to their rise in popularity.

Vaccine Misinformation and Wellness Influencers

However, a darker side of wellness culture is emerging, particularly related to the spread of misinformation about vaccines. While some influencers have used their platforms to advocate for the importance of vaccines, others have become vocal opponents. These individuals often promote pseudoscientific theories, suggesting that vaccines are unsafe, ineffective, or part of a larger conspiracy.

The connection between wellness influencers and vaccine misinformation is concerning because of their large and devoted following. Influencers typically have millions of followers, many of whom view them as credible sources of health information. When these influencers express anti-vaccine sentiments, it can have a ripple effect, causing doubt and skepticism among their audience.

Key Drivers Behind Vaccine Opposition

Several factors contribute to the rise of vaccine opposition among wellness influencers:

Alternative Medicine Advocacy: Many wellness influencers promote alternative treatments like herbal remedies, detox programs, and natural therapies. These practices often prioritize natural immunity over conventional medical solutions like vaccinations. This mindset can create a distrust of traditional medicine and make individuals more susceptible to anti-vaccine narratives.

Misinformation Spread: Social media platforms, despite their ability to connect people, also serve as breeding grounds for misinformation. Wellness influencers often share content without verifying facts, perpetuating myths about vaccine safety and efficacy. Additionally, algorithms on platforms like Facebook and Instagram can amplify such content, increasing its reach.

Celebrity Influence and Social Proof: Influencers often endorse their beliefs as a form of social proof, encouraging their followers to trust their judgment. If a popular influencer expresses vaccine hesitancy, their followers may take that as validation for their own concerns. This sense of community within the influencer’s following reinforces vaccine opposition.

Fear of Government Control: Some wellness influencers align with broader conspiracy theories, suggesting that vaccines are part of a government or corporate plot. This rhetoric appeals to individuals who are already distrustful of institutions, government regulation, or pharmaceutical companies.

A Personal Responsibility Framework: Wellness influencers often focus on personal health responsibility and self-care, which may lead them to question the necessity of vaccines. They may argue that taking control of one’s health through nutrition, exercise, and mental wellness is sufficient for disease prevention, disregarding the role of vaccines in controlling infectious diseases.

The Impact of Vaccine Opposition

The influence of wellness influencers who oppose vaccines can have serious public health consequences. Some of the risks include:

Declining Vaccination Rates: When followers of wellness influencers are exposed to anti-vaccine content, they may choose not to vaccinate themselves or their children. This can lead to lower vaccination rates, putting communities at risk of preventable diseases like measles, polio, and, most recently, COVID-19.

Increased Vulnerability to Disease Outbreaks: Lower vaccination rates make populations more vulnerable to disease outbreaks. Herd immunity relies on a high percentage of the population being vaccinated to protect those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons. Vaccine hesitancy can undermine this critical protection.

Misinformation and Public Health Challenges: Misinformation surrounding vaccines can create public health challenges for authorities and medical professionals. Health campaigns aimed at improving vaccine acceptance become more difficult when influential figures perpetuate false claims. This delays progress toward achieving widespread immunity, which is crucial for controlling the spread of infectious diseases.

Loss of Trust in Medical Institutions: When wellness influencers speak out against vaccines, they may also contribute to a larger distrust of the medical establishment. This can lead to people questioning other forms of medical advice, undermining efforts to promote evidence-based health practices.

Combating Vaccine Misinformation

The growing problem of vaccine misinformation on social media is not easily solved, but there are steps that can be taken to address it:

Educational Campaigns: Governments, health organizations, and medical professionals must work to counter misinformation with accurate, accessible, and engaging educational content. Social media platforms can collaborate with experts to create informative posts and videos that debunk common myths about vaccines.

Collaboration with Influencers: Health organizations could partner with influencers who have a strong, positive reputation for promoting healthy living. By working together, they can create content that highlights the importance of vaccines while maintaining the influencer’s credibility with their audience.

Stronger Regulation of Social Media Platforms: Social media companies can play a significant role in curbing vaccine misinformation by implementing stricter policies on the spread of false health claims. Fact-checking tools and algorithmic changes could help reduce the visibility of misleading content.

Promoting Health Literacy: It’s important to encourage health literacy among social media users. Providing followers with resources to better understand the science behind vaccines and how they protect public health can empower individuals to make more informed decisions.

Addressing Personal Concerns: Wellness influencers who are hesitant about vaccines can be encouraged to listen to medical professionals and engage in open, evidence-based discussions. Addressing personal fears or misconceptions can help shift attitudes and provide a more balanced perspective.

The role of wellness influencers in spreading vaccine misinformation is a growing concern, with serious implications for public health. While these influencers have the power to inspire positive lifestyle changes, they also carry a responsibility to provide accurate, evidence-based health information. The spread of vaccine opposition, especially among influential social media personalities, can undermine public health efforts, particularly in the fight against preventable diseases.

Combating vaccine misinformation requires a multi-pronged approach involving education, collaboration, and regulation. Public health authorities, social media platforms, and influencers themselves must all work together to address the issue and ensure that individuals are making informed decisions about their health. By focusing on the facts and promoting trust in medical science, we can help mitigate the impact of vaccine opposition and protect the well-being of communities around the world.

</excerpt>

Although the winter session of Parliament ended on Friday, yet the events that took place a day earlier leading to verbal exchanges between the treasury members and the Opposition following injuries to at least three MPs, should make our political class to introspect. Never before have such scenes been witnessed and the unsubstantiated charge against the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi was totally uncalled for. It is extremely unfortunate that such an incident took place in the premises of Parliament House and it is now for an impartial inquiry to ascertain as to who all were at fault. The only way of reaching the truth is by going through the CCTV coverage which must have recorded the entire sequence of events. To the naked eye after watching the TV coverage, it appears that there was a push from the back and this resulted in two BJP MPs being knocked down with another MP accusing Rahul Gandhi of doing this deliberately. It is unthinkable that Rahul would have done anything like that and though a FIR against him has been registered by the Delhi police, it would greatly help to unravel the truth through impartial investigation. It should also be ascertained how the MPs of both sides came so close to each other while demonstrating and how were sticks to placards allowed within the precincts of the Parliament. Somebody needs to be held accountable for this.

The relations between the Opposition and the Treasury benches in both the Houses have been tense and during this session, it was unprecedented when the Vice President who is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha was openly accused of taking sides while discharging his duties. The BJP has been quick to defend him but the conduct of both the presiding officers has been under scrutiny for some time, and their rulings have more often than not, raised questions about their unbiased judgment. The House also saw an open clash between the Congress and the BJP over allegations made against Industrialist Gautam Adani and also the attempts to implicate Sonia Gandhi and her family with anti-National forces allegedly prompted by American tycoon George Soros. Instead of focussing on many issues which needed immediate attention, the Parliament spent extra-ordinary time on the Adani-Soros matter and as result the Houses hardly functioned.

There was a debate on the anniversary of the Constitution and expectedly, the time was used by both sides to show each other in poor light. Matters came to a head when Home Minister while speaking in the Rajya Sabha, urged Opposition to stop chanting Ambedkar’s name repeatedly and advised them that if instead they had invoked God with the same zeal, they would go to Heaven. This statement sparked a major controversy and the Congress as well as the entire INDIA bloc accused Amit Shah of insulting Ambedkar, the father of the Constitution. The Congress demanded his resignation and also asked the Prime Minister to sack him. This resulted in verbal clashes which led to the confrontation outside Parliament on Thursday. The point which has arisen is that the Congress and the BJP have both been trying to appropriate Ambedkar’s legacy when both had opposed the legal luminary and National icon for many years. The Sangh Parivar had never endorsed Ambedkar’s concepts which differed from those of the RSS and the Congress till Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure, had not accepted his philosophy either. In fact, soon after Independence after a fallout with Ambedkar, the Congress had propped up Babu Jagjiwan Ram as the Dalit hero and face. Babuji was an extremely competent politician and as long as he lived, he occupied his own space in National politics. However, this space, many believe was at the expense of Dr Ambedkar who was humiliated by the Congress and also made to lose elections because the grand old party never allowed him to emerge on the national scene. Ambedkar was rediscovered and resurrected by Vishwanath Pratap Singh who also conferred the Bharat Ratna on him posthumously. The Socialists and many other leaders opposed to the Congress, backed Ambedkar fully and he was given his rightful place after many years. But had he been alive, he would have been a very sad man if he would have witnessed all that went on in his name. Dr Ambedkar is like a God for many who follow Dalit politics and even beyond that he is viewed as someone who was so learned and perceptive, a truly a national icon. The latest instance where the two major parties clashed with each other was to misappropriate his legacy for the sake of votes. It is hard to imagine that the two outfits would play so much of politics in his name if it had not been beneficial to them for political purposes. Dr Ambedkar was as tall a leader as anyone else has been during the freedom struggle and after that. His followers do not consider him, less than a God or a spiritual messiah who showed them the way of fighting for equality and similar rights with those who were more privileged.
The short point after watching the Parliament proceedings is that the political parties should stop indulging in political gimmicks and instead focus on matters that impact the people. Adani and Soros do not have any resonance with the common man and it is a futile exercise in one sense to make them the central theme of the proceedings. Parliament is supreme and its sanctity can only be upheld if its decorum is maintained and members conduct themselves with both dignity and orderly behaviour.

</excerpt>

Senior BJP leader and former Leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Premchand Bairwa, and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara addressed a press conference at the BJP state office on Thursday, highlighting the significant achievements of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma’s government in its first year. The leaders defended the BJP government’s policies and questioned the opposition’s stance, calling the Congress’s criticisms “indigestible” given the BJP’s developmental achievements.
Rathore highlighted that Chief Minister Bhajan lal Sharma’s government had focused on inclusive development, benefiting all sections of society. He said that the opposition’s criticism, especially from Congress, stems from their inability to accept the progress made by the BJP. “More than three and a half lakh people attended the one-year celebration in Jaipur, showing their support for the government,” Rathore stated. He noted that Congress’s narrative was not aligned with public sentiment, which had decisively rejected them in the last general and by-elections.
Rathore also took aim at Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasara, accusing him of hypocrisy in questioning the BJP’s governance. Rathore recalled the former Congress government’s failure, where the state was virtually “imprisoned” under the leadership of Ashok Gehlot for 34 days. He also remarked that when Dotasara was the education minister under Gehlot, teachers had raised their voices against corruption, but Dotasara had failed to address these issues. Rathore emphasized that while under the BJP government, corruption like the paper leak mafia was tackled head-on, jobs were no longer sold, and only qualified individuals were hired.
Investment Summit Brings Massive Opportunities for Rajasthan
Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Premchand Bairwa shared that Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma’s government had closely followed the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One of the most significant achievements of the year was the successful organization of the Rising Rajasthan Summit in December. This event saw investors from across the country and 32 countries, signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth over Rs 35 lakh crore. Dr. Bairwa emphasized that these agreements would create substantial employment opportunities for Rajasthan’s youth and help strengthen the state’s economy.
He also pointed to the government’s initiative to streamline the investment process through a single window, making it easier for investors to do business in Rajasthan. Moreover, the government’s recognition of the state’s migrant population was highlighted through the announcement of Pravasi Diwas, celebrated on December 10, further promoting the welfare of the people working outside the state.
Chief Minister’s Micro Monitoring System Proves Effective
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara commended Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma’s commitment to the welfare of all sections of society. Godara emphasized that the BJP government’s policies were designed to benefit the poor, deprived, and marginalized communities. “The BJP government released a budget for roads in every MLA’s area in its first year, something the previous Congress government failed to do in five years,” he stated.
He praised the Chief Minister’s innovative micro-monitoring system, which he said was ensuring that government schemes were reaching the neediest sections of society. Under this system, the government has helped incorporate 12 lakh new beneficiaries into the food security scheme, including 2 lakh specially-abled people. Additionally, ration is being delivered to homes of special category beneficiaries and senior citizens, making the system more accessible to those in need.
Focus on Farmers and Agriculture
Godara also discussed the BJP government’s efforts to improve the livelihoods of farmers. The government increased the support price for wheat, providing farmers with a better income. Further, work was done to provide agricultural connections to about 96,000 farmers and domestic connections to over 4 lakh households. Godara highlighted that these initiatives were helping to improve the economic situation for people across rural areas of Rajasthan.
Continued Focus on Welfare and Transparency
Godara further elaborated on the government’s work to ensure that schemes reached the intended beneficiaries, mentioning campaigns like eKYC and removal of names for ineligible individuals to ensure that only those who needed assistance benefited from government schemes. He also mentioned that from January 1, 2025, the government would start a special campaign to include more deprived individuals into the food security program.
The BJP leaders emphasized that Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma’s first year had been unmatched in its efforts to uplift the people of Rajasthan. They praised the government’s focus on development, transparency, and welfare. As the BJP leadership pointed out, the government’s plans for the next year include further strengthening the state’s economy, empowering its youth, and continuing to implement inclusive development policies.

</excerpt>

Opposition welcomed the Public Works Department’s (PWD) decision to seal the bungalow of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Both Delhi Congress and BJP have criticized the hasty manner in which Chief Minister Atishi Marlena moved into the grand residence at 6 Flag Staff Road, Civil Lines, right after Kejriwal vacated it for another luxurious bungalow at 5 Feroze Shah Road, allotted to an Aam Aadmi Party MP.
Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav argued that this rush suggested there were much to hide in the bungalow, making the sealing decision inevitable. Yadav further alleged that the residence had become infamous due to several incidents, including the liquor scam orchestrated by Kejriwal, the assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal by Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar, and the attack on a former Chief Secretary in Kejriwal’s presence. He also noted that Atishi moved into the bungalow before officials could thoroughly inspect it. Yadav suggested that the PWD should have filmed the bungalow’s luxurious features to expose Kejriwal’s hypocrisy, as he portrayed himself as a “common man” while indulging in the perks of power at a residence rebuilt at a hefty cost.
Yadav emphasized that Atishi’s swift move into the CM’s residence, despite holding the position for only four months, was intended to cover up Kejriwal’s corruption, particularly the now-scrapped liquor policy devised in the bungalow during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed surprise that Atishi did not move into the bungalow allotted to her as a minister at 17, A-B Mathura Road, where former CM Sheila Dikshit had stayed from 1998 to 2004. Instead, she allowed Manish Sisodia to stay at the CM residence even after he resigned as Deputy Chief Minister following his arrest in the liquor scam. Yadav stressed that government bungalows should not be misused by those in power, noting that Kejriwal and his colleagues have lost all credibility.
Interestingly, even the Delhi BJP, Congress’s usual rival, supported the PWD’s decision. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said the sealing of the Sheesh Mahal bungalow met public expectations and called for a video survey to disclose all details to the public. Sachdeva accused AAP of trying to let Atishi illegally occupy the bungalow, which had been linked to investigations involving illegal construction and tree-cutting. He suggested that Kejriwal was hiding something about the bungalow, which lacked approved plans and a completion certificate, and that the PWD has the right to survey and remove any unauthorized constructions. He also raised concerns over the suspicious handling of the bungalow’s keys, calling for a vigilance department investigation.

Opposition leader Vijay Wadettiwar stated that all MVA allies will participate in the bandh. He emphasized that the discussions centered on the BJP-led Mahayuti government’s failures, particularly in ensuring women’s safety.

The abuse involved two young girls, under the age of four, who were sexually assaulted by a male cleaning staff at their Badlapur school. The assault occurred in the toilet, which lacked female attendants.

The case was uncovered when one of the girls informed her parents of discomfort in her private area. The revelation sparked a significant protest in Badlapur, with demonstrators blocking railway tracks at the local station.

In response, the Maharashtra government has announced a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, and the accused has been detained.

Opposition leaders argue that the parents of the victims faced an 11-hour wait for the FIR to be filed. On Wednesday, Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad led a demonstration outside Mantralaya, the state secretariat, criticizing the government for the delay in the FIR registration. Vijay Wadettiwar and several Congress leaders joined the protest, holding placards and chanting slogans against the government.

This incident has occurred alongside the ongoing agitation over the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata.

</excerpt>

The NDA government’s recent rollback of a well-conceived scheme to recruit talent laterally into the bureaucracy marks another instance where political expediency has overshadowed national interest. This decision represents the fifth major policy reversal by the current administration, a pattern that is increasingly concerning. While the opposition celebrates these rollbacks as political victories, the real loss is for Bharat.

Lateral Entry scheme: The lateral entry scheme aimed to bring fresh expertise into the bureaucratic system by allowing professionals from the private sector to join mid-level government positions. This initiative sought to introduce specialised knowledge and skills that traditional career bureaucrats might lack, thereby making the administrative machinery more agile and efficient. In countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, lateral entry has been crucial in enhancing the quality of governance. For example, the U.S. government frequently hires experts from the private sector to lead agencies or manage complex projects, ensuring that the best talent is harnessed for public service. The UK’s Civil Service Fast Stream also encourages lateral entry to bring in fresh perspectives. The rollback of this scheme in India is a significant setback, as it denies the government access to a broader talent pool, ultimately affecting governance quality and, by extension, the nation’s progress.

Farm laws: The repeal of the three farm laws, despite their alignment with reforms proposed by the Congress in its 2019 manifesto, represents a missed opportunity for India’s agricultural sector. These laws aimed to provide farmers with more options to sell their produce, potentially leading to higher incomes. Increased farm incomes would have translated into greater rural consumption, a key driver of economic growth. In countries like the United States, reforms in agricultural policies have played a crucial role in stabilising farm incomes and ensuring food security. By rolling back these laws, the NDA government has not only undermined the potential for agricultural growth but also missed a chance to boost the broader economy through enhanced rural demand.

Waqf Act Amendment bill:
The decision to send the bill to amend the Waqf Act of 1995 to a Parliamentary committee rather than pushing it through reflects a hesitancy to address sensitive issues head-on. The Waqf Act, which governs the management of religious endowments for the Muslim community, has been criticised for creating disparities in how different religious communities are treated under the law. In a secular democracy, it is crucial that all communities are treated equally under the law to maintain national unity. Countries like France, with its strict separation of church and state, have shown that equal treatment under the law is essential for social cohesion. The delay in addressing these disparities only deepens societal divisions, weakening the fabric of Bharat.

The rollback of the lateral entry scheme by the NDA government is a significant setback in India’s efforts to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of its bureaucratic system. Lateral entry, which allows professionals from diverse fields to bring their expertise into government roles, has been a key component in transforming governance in several Western countries.

For instance, the United States has long embraced the concept of lateral entry. The U.S. government routinely brings in experts from the private sector, academia, and nonprofits to fill senior positions in various departments. This practice is especially common in agencies like the Department of Defense and the National Security Council, where subject matter experts are essential for making informed decisions on complex issues. These experts provide fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and specialised knowledge that career bureaucrats may lack, thereby driving more effective governance.

In the United Kingdom, lateral entry is also a well-established practice. The British Civil Service has a long tradition of appointing professionals from outside the government to senior positions. This practice is seen in the recruitment of Permanent Secretaries and Directors-General who bring with them a wealth of experience from the private sector. Their contributions have often led to more streamlined processes, cost savings, and better policy outcomes.

Similarly, in France, the École Nationale d’Administration (ENA) system allows for lateral entry into senior bureaucratic roles. The French government has benefited from this system by integrating individuals with diverse experiences into its administrative machinery, leading to a more dynamic and responsive government.

These examples from the U.S., the U.K., and France demonstrate how lateral entry can infuse new energy and expertise into the bureaucratic system, leading to better governance outcomes. By rolling back the lateral entry scheme, India risks missing out on the opportunity to tap into the vast reservoir of talent outside traditional bureaucratic channels. This rollback not only hinders the goal of making the bureaucracy more efficient but also deprives the nation of the potential benefits that come from diverse and specialised knowledge in governance.

In conclusion, while the opposition may claim victory over these rollbacks, it is crucial to understand that the real loser in this political tug-of-war is Bharat—the very fabric of our nation. These policy reversals represent far more than just the undoing of specific legislative measures; they symbolise a retreat from progress and a missed opportunity for national advancement. Each of these decisions, when viewed in isolation, may seem like a concession to public opinion or a response to political pressure, but collectively, they signal a troubling trend of sacrificing long-term national interest for short-term political gain.

The rollback of the lateral entry scheme, for instance, is not just a reversal of a policy but a missed opportunity to inject much-needed expertise and innovation into our bureaucratic system. The lateral entry scheme was a visionary initiative aimed at bridging the gap between the public and private sectors, fostering a more dynamic and responsive government. By rolling it back, we are not only denying ourselves the benefits of this cross-pollination of ideas and skills but also sending a message that the status quo is preferable to progress. This is a step backward for Bharat, a nation that aspires to be a global leader in governance and innovation.

Similarly, the repeal of the farm laws is not merely a victory for the opposition but a defeat for the millions of farmers who stood to benefit from the increased market access and financial security these laws promised. The rollback has stalled the momentum for agricultural reform, which is desperately needed to modernise our farming practices and improve the livelihoods of those who feed the nation. This decision has wider implications for Bharat’s economic growth, as a vibrant agricultural sector is essential for sustaining rural economies and driving overall national development.

Furthermore, the decision to delay the amendment of the Waqf Act by sending it to a Parliamentary committee is a significant setback for the principle of secularism in our country. The amendment was a critical step towards ensuring equal treatment of all religious communities under the law—a cornerstone of our constitutional values. By postponing this necessary reform, we are allowing the existing disparities to persist, which only deepens societal divisions and undermines national unity. In a country as diverse as Bharat, maintaining social harmony and cohesion is paramount for our progress as a nation. Delaying such reforms weakens the very foundation of our secular democracy.

Each of these rollbacks, therefore, is not just a policy reversal but a step backward in Bharat’s journey towards becoming a more prosperous, unified, and efficient nation. The opposition may claim these as victories, but in reality, they are victories at the expense of national interest. These decisions reflect a lack of commitment to the hard choices and bold actions needed to propel Bharat forward. They represent a retreat into complacency and a reluctance to embrace the changes necessary for our nation to thrive in the 21st century.

As citizens, it is essential to recognize that the true cost of these rollbacks is borne by the nation as a whole. The path to progress is often fraught with challenges and resistance, but it is only through perseverance and a steadfast commitment to reform that we can hope to achieve our full potential. The rollbacks may have appeased certain factions in the short term, but they have done so at the expense of Bharat’s long-term prosperity and unity. The true victory will come when we collectively prioritise the nation’s future over immediate political gains, ensuring that every decision made is a step forward in the journey towards a stronger, more unified, and prosperous Bharat.

</excerpt>

Union Home Minister Amit Shah confidently predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will come to power again in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking at the inauguration of the Nyay Setu water supply project, Shah assured the audience of NDA’s victory, despite opposition efforts.

“I assure you that let the opposition do whatever it wants to do, in 2029 NDA will come, Modi ji will come. They (opposition) do not know that BJP has won more seats in this election than the number of seats Congress got in 3 elections,” Shah declared.

He further commented on the opposition’s claims of governmental instability, saying, “These people who want to spread instability, repeatedly say that this government is not going to last. I have come to assure them that not only will the government complete its term, but the next government will be of NDA and be ready to sit in the opposition and learn the way of working in the opposition properly,” as quoted by ANI.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured 240 seats, which was less than its 2019 tally of 303. However, the NDA, led by the BJP, managed to form the government with support from the Telugu Desam Party and Janata Dal (United).

Narendra Modi is currently serving his third consecutive term as Prime Minister, the first leader to do so since India’s first PM, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The opposition INDIA bloc posed a significant challenge to the NDA, winning over 230 seats. The Congress party saw a substantial increase, securing 99 seats compared to 52 in 2019, marking its best performance in 15 years since winning 206 seats in the 2009 general elections.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP’s seat count dropped from 62 to 33, with its pre-poll allies, the RLD and Apna Dal (SP), winning two and one seat, respectively. The BJP and its allies had previously won 73 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 and 64 seats in 2019.

</excerpt>

Union Home Minister Amit Shah took a swipe at the INDIA bloc on Sunday, suggesting that they should brace themselves for being in the opposition again in 2029. Shah made these comments during the inauguration of the Nyay Setu water supply project and the launch of the smart city mission in Chandigarh.

Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed confidence that the NDA will secure victory in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. “The INDIA bloc should prepare to sit in the opposition in 2029. No matter what the opposition does, the NDA will return to power, and Modi ji will remain at the helm. The BJP has won more seats in this election than Congress did over three elections,” he stated.

Criticizing the opposition, Shah accused the INDIA bloc of attempting to create instability and advised them to learn how to function effectively in opposition. “Those who seek to spread instability claim that this government won’t last. I want to assure them that not only will this government complete its term, but the next government will also be led by the NDA. They should prepare to sit in the opposition and learn how to work from that position,” he said.

Regarding the Nyay Setu project, Shah emphasized its significance, noting, “Water is essential for life. When it is not clean, it leads to many diseases. This project will ensure a 24/7 supply of filtered water to the area and will endure over time.”

He added, “The project covers about 125 acres. Since Modi ji became Prime Minister, the focus has been on developing smart cities, with Chandigarh being a priority. To date, Rs 1 lakh crore has been invested in this initiative. The mission to provide clean drinking water to 74% of households has been accomplished, and water-borne diseases have significantly decreased. We aim to complete the provision of clean water to every household in the country before the end of Modi ji’s third term.”

This follows BJP MP Anurag Thakur’s controversial comment about Rahul Gandhi’s caste, which was previously expunged from the House proceedings.

The Congress party condemns PM Modi for sharing Thakur’s remark on social media. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other leaders argue that this act inflamed sentiments and criticized Modi for endorsing the comment that allegedly insulted various social groups.

BJP Responds with Counter-Accusations

In defense, BJP MPs accuse the Congress of manipulating the issue for political gain and question the sensitivity of the caste comment. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and others argue that discussions about caste are a regular feature of Congress’s political discourse.

Opposition Criticizes BJP’s Focus

The opposition, including Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Manoj Jha, criticizes the BJP for focusing on individual castes rather than the broader issue of caste census. They assert that Thakur’s remarks and the subsequent endorsement by the PM show a feudal mindset and an attempt to mock the caste census debate.

Political Debate Intensifies

The political debate intensifies with Congress demanding an apology from Thakur, while BJP leaders defend the remarks and question the Congress’s stance on caste issues. The ongoing dispute underscores the broader tension surrounding caste politics in India.

</excerpt>

The initial Budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term suggests that the government is working with a strategic, forward-looking approach. The Budget has given clear indications that the NDA will retain its strength, while announcements will be made in accordance with election preparations. This Budget aims to address unemployment and farmers’ issues raised by the opposition, and has effectively garnered support from allies, weakening opposition stance. The budget seems to have affected the plans of the opposition extensively. Congress has strongly criticized the budget and also also accused BJP of stealing their announcements.
The way Budget has created stir can be seen by the way Congress is reacting. On Wednesday, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi met with a delegation of farmers, emphasizing Congress’s continued advocacy. In Parliament, Congress sought to highlight that the budget primarily consists of announcements. This budget carries significant importance for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he leads a coalition government for the first time, where allies play a crucial role in governance.
In the budget, the government pleasantly surprised allies TDP and JDU with more than expected allocations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dashed opposition hopes decisively. The budget provided a significant boost to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his party, with more than Rs 59,000 crores earmarked for development.
This strengthened the alliance ahead of potential Bihar elections this year. Despite opposition attempts to confuse Nitish Kumar on the special state issue, they backfired, solidifying his commitment to contest elections with BJP. Similarly, the special package for Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu has strengthened their relationship. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s remark on pleasing allies’ expresses PM Modi’s strategic move.
The government’s assertive stance in the 18th Lok Sabha’s first session may deter opposition attempts to destabilize it. Focus on generating four crore jobs for youth and rural development highlights BJP’s electoral priorities in upcoming state elections. The budget’s provisions for farmers, youth, and rural areas emphasize BJP’s strategic focus on election-bound states like Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand.
Along with this, it was important for the government to solve even the smaller issues. That is why the government paid special attention to farmers, unemployment and development of rural areas. Immediately after this budget session, assembly elections are to be held in three states and by-elections in some states including Uttar Pradesh. Assembly elections are to be held in October-November in all the three states of Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand, while by-elections are to be held in some states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. In these states, farmers and youth are important voters of rural areas. The government was aware that the displeasure of farmers and youth was a huge problem in the Lok Sabha elections. That is why the NDA government seems to have prepared the budget accordingly. The opposition was expecting that the Modi government would get trapped in the trap of allies, but this did not happen. This was a big shock for the opposition.
The opposition’s behavior, particularly that of Congress during the initial session of the 18th Lok Sabha and subsequent efforts to destabilize the government, is likely to subside following this budget. The government’s assertive approach is now apparent. Plans to create four crore jobs for youth over the next five years and a focus on rural development are key priorities. The budget’s special allocations for farmers, youth, and rural areas underscore BJP’s concentrated efforts on states heading to polls. The upcoming elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand hold significant importance for BJP, with a potential resurgence in Maharashtra providing additional strength to PM Modi. As the budget phase concludes, attention shifts to how BJP strategists will communicate these initiatives to the public.

</excerpt>

The political turmoil in Uttar Pradesh BJP doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. the internal factions in BJP seem to have given a ray of hope to dwell upon to the opposition. The opposition, particularly the SP, is banking on BJP’s internal conflicts and the inclusion of Rashtriya Lok Dal in the government. However, following the general budget, there appears to be little change expected in Uttar Pradesh politics. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directive to list shop owners obstructing the Kanwar Yatra initially drew dissatisfaction from RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary, but the situation shifted after the Supreme Court’s ruling. Despite this, Samajwadi Party leaders continue to stir UP politics with remarks about Chaudhary and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.
In the current political landscape of Uttar Pradesh, Jayant Chaudhary finds himself constrained within the NDA alliance due to his representation with just two MPs in the Lok Sabha, limiting his impact. The opposition has consistently sought to unsettle him, even during Narendra Modi’s ascension as NDA leader, highlighting his absence from prominent stages. Questions have also arisen regarding his state ministerial role and portfolio assignment, indicating a strategy by the opposition to maintain instability within the NDA in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav continues to fuel political tensions with provocative statements, indirectly supported by Congress, aiming to challenge the ruling dispensation. However, the recent budget presentation on Tuesday may alter the political landscape in Uttar Pradesh, potentially quelling the atmosphere of uncertainty. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, buoyed by Delhi’s backing and strengthened by the budget’s political provisions, now appears to wield increased autonomy in his political maneuvers.
Despite the budget not offering significant allocations specific to Uttar Pradesh, the bolstering of the NDA alliance is expected to influence state dynamics. Delhi’s signal of support to leaders like Keshav Prasad Maurya suggests internal rifts are being addressed.
Sources indicate RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is poised to convene a crucial meeting with Uttar Pradesh leaders, initially slated for last Saturday but postponed, hinting at potential organizational directives on the horizon.

Any decisions regarding organizational changes are anticipated post by-elections, reflecting a strategic approach by the party leadership.

Gandhi, along with other opposition leaders, is expected to closely follow the budget proceedings and raise key issues concerning the nation’s economy and the common man.

The Budget session commenced with heightened anticipation, as it marks the first budget of the newly-formed NDA government following the recent elections. The session is expected to address significant economic policies and legislative proposals, with Sitharaman set to unveil the Economic Survey and the Union Budget for 2024-2025, which aims to outline a roadmap for India’s development goals by 2047.

The atmosphere in Parliament is expected to be contentious, with the opposition planning to actively engage the government on multiple fronts. Gandhi’s arrival signals a commitment to confront the administration over pressing issues, particularly the integrity of the examination process in India. His statements reflect a growing concern among opposition leaders about the credibility of educational assessments, which they argue undermines public trust and fairness in the system.

</excerpt>

The governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have sparked a significant controversy by directing dhabas and restaurants along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners. The opposition has condemned the order, labeling it discriminatory.

Asaduddin Owaisi, a prominent opposition leader, criticized the directive on social media. “Fear on UP’s Kanwar routes: This is the reality of hatred for Indian Muslims. Credit for this visceral hatred goes to political parties, leaders of Hindutva and so-called lip-servicing secular parties,” he posted on X, accompanied by a photo of an egg stall showcasing the owner’s name.

In response, West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar accused the opposition of misleading the public. He argued that similar directives had been issued by previous governments led by the Samajwadi Party. “The Opposition is misleading people and spreading lies. A similar kind of notification was issued during Mulayam Singh Yadav’s government, and Akhilesh Yadav’s government also issued such notifications. It’s a routine exercise and not specific to the Kanwar Yatra. The law requires that names be registered, not identifying anyone by religion… Hindus who eat non-veg go to Muslim shops. In West Bengal, we go to many such shops, which are run by Muslims. The Opposition is trying to divide the people and Asaduddin Owaisi is playing the role of Jinnah,” Majumdar said.

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal also criticized the directive, warning that such divisive measures would fragment the country. “Kanwar Yatra Route UP directs eateries, including roadside carts, to display the names of the owners! Is this the route to a ‘Viksit Bharat’? Divisive agendas will only divide the country!” Sibal wrote on X.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Maulana Arshad Madani condemned the order, calling it a “new game of politics under the guise of religion.” He stated, “This is a completely discriminatory and communal decision, and anti-national elements will get an opportunity to benefit from this.”

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti expressed concerns that the BJP government would next target Dalits. “First, they (BJP) want to trample the rights of the Muslims, then it will be the turn of the Dalits and then backwards and other castes because they want to create a different system and what they did in UP is against the Constitution of this country,” she said.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut accused the BJP of undermining national unity. “Now you (BJP) are directing food stalls to put up nameplates based on caste and religion? Do you want to divide the country? You won’t profit from it. You are breaking the nation’s unity,” he stated.

Manipur experienced violent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities last May, resulting in approximately 200 fatalities and displacing thousands due to extensive arson damaging homes and government buildings.

Addressing the issue in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi reiterated, “The government is committed to normalizing the situation in Manipur. Over 11,000 FIRs have been lodged and more than 500 arrests made. Violence incidents are on a decline. Schools, colleges, offices, and institutions are functioning. The Central and State governments are in dialogue with all stakeholders to restore peace. The Union Home Minister spent several weeks there… The Central government is providing full assistance to Manipur to manage the flood situation. </excerpt>

There are some instances in the history of Indian politics that highlight the dynamic nature of our democracy, where the Prime Minister and key leaders in the opposition play pivotal roles in shaping legislative debates and influencing public opinion. The confrontations often reflect the diverse political ideologies and agendas within the Indian Parliament.

The confrontations between India’s Prime Ministers and the Opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha have been a significant part of the country’s parliamentary history. These interactions often reflect the political tensions and debates within India’s democratic framework. Confrontations between India’s Prime Ministers and the Opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha typically arise due to several reasons, often stemming from political disagreements, policy issues, or broader governance challenges.

The history of confrontations between India’s Prime Ministers and Opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha underscores the vibrancy of Indian democracy. These interactions play a crucial role in shaping public discourse, influencing policy decisions, and upholding democratic values in the country.

Here are a few notable instances:

Nehru vs Rajendra Prasad: Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, faced strong opposition from leaders like Rajendra Prasad, who later became the President of India. Their debates often revolved around issues of national importance, including economic policies and foreign relations. One of the major reasons for the political differences between Dr Rajendra Prasad and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the attitude of both of them towards the significance of religion in the society. Nehru favoured modern socialism, he believed that attitude towards religion was the main reason for India’s situation. The major public confrontations between Nehru and Prasad started with the Hindu code bills. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar presented the draft in October 1947 in the Constituent Assembly and Nehru supported him. Under this, a rule code for all Hindus was to be created.

The debate on the code bill spread to outside religious leaders and conservative social workers who opposed it vigorously. Nehru noticed the controversy surrounding the bill but at the time when constitution was to be filled with the Hindu code bill, Nehru took a tough stand on it. He was firm on getting the bill passed even if he had to take all the blame on him and tackle the objections surrounding it.

Furious with Nehru’s attitude, Rajendra Prasad wrote a letter to him. In the letter, he described Nehru as unjust and undemocratic. Prasad shared the letter with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel before sending it to Nehru. Patel took the letter and suggested him not to act angrily. He advised him to raise his disagreement in party’s forum.

Because it was already September 1949. Not only constitution was going to be completed but presidential elections were to be held right after that. Patel wanted Rajendra Prasad to be the President. Nehru, at that time, favored then Governor General Rajagopalachari, for the post. Patel and Prasad had a strong hold on the organisation, even more than Nehru.

But Patel did not want any direct confrontation with Nehru before the elections. After all, Nehru was the face of Congress and the most popular leader among the people. Patel’s strategy was successful and the Congress chose Rajendra Prasad as the President of India.
Indira Gandhi vs Atal Bihari Vajpayee: During the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee emerged as a prominent leader of the Opposition. Their debates were intense, particularly during the period of the Emergency (1975-1977), when political freedoms were curtailed.

Rajiv Gandhi vs L.K. Advani: L.K. Advani, as the Leader of the Opposition in the late 1980s and early 1990s, engaged in spirited debates with Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. These debates often focused on issues such as governance, corruption, and national security.
V.P. Singh vs Rajiv Gandhi: V.P. Singh, as the Prime Minister following the Bofors scandal, faced criticism from leaders of the Opposition, including Rajiv Gandhi. The debates during this period were crucial in shaping public opinion and parliamentary discourse.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee vs Sonia Gandhi: During Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi emerged as a prominent leader of the Congress party and the Leader of the Opposition. Their debates often revolved around issues such as economic policies, governance, and communal harmony.

Manmohan Singh vs L.K. Advani: As Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh faced L.K. Advani as the Leader of the Opposition during the UPA government’s tenure. Their debates focused on various contentious issues such as the Indo-US nuclear deal, inflation, and corruption scandals.

Avoiding confrontations between India’s Prime Ministers and the Opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha can be challenging but can be approached through several strategies aimed at fostering constructive dialogue and mutual respect. Both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition can set a tone of respect and professionalism in parliamentary debates.

Emphasizing the importance of civil discourse and avoiding personal attacks can help reduce confrontations. Encouraging regular dialogues and consultations between the government and opposition outside of parliamentary sessions can build understanding and trust. These interactions can focus on common goals and areas of agreement, fostering a more collaborative approach.

Emphasizing substantive policy discussions rather than political rhetoric can shift the focus from personal or partisan attacks. Clear articulation of policy objectives and rationale can help bridge ideological differences. Encouraging bipartisan or multi-party discussions on key national issues can promote consensus-building. Finding common ground on matters of national interest, such as economic development, security, or social welfare, can reduce confrontational politics.

Upholding the integrity of parliamentary processes, including debate rules and procedures, ensures fairness and reduces the likelihood of confrontations based on procedural disputes. Leaders from both sides can lead by example by demonstrating patience, tolerance, and a willingness to listen to opposing views. This can set a precedent for constructive engagement among other parliamentarians.

Encouraging responsible media reporting and avoiding sensationalism can reduce the escalation of political tensions in public discourse. Leaders can also use media platforms to promote constructive dialogue rather than inflammatory rhetoric. Establishing formal or informal mechanisms for conflict resolution can provide a structured approach to address disagreements. This could include parliamentary committees, bipartisan forums, or mediation by respected individuals or institutions.

Investing in long-term relationship building between leaders of different political parties can create a foundation of mutual respect and understanding, reducing the likelihood of confrontations during times of disagreement. Emphasizing shared commitment to democratic principles, such as accountability, transparency, and the rule of law, can unite leaders across party lines and mitigate confrontational politics. Ultimately, while complete avoidance of confrontations may not always be possible in a vibrant democracy like India’s, these strategies can contribute to a more constructive and cooperative political environment where differences are managed with civility and respect.

The 18th Lok Sabha session will commence on June 24, marking the first session for the newly elected MPs following the 2024 general elections.

An official press release stated that, based on the government’s business needs, the Parliament session is set to conclude on Wednesday, July 3. During this session, all newly elected Lok Sabha MPs will take their oaths.

President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint session of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on June 27, following the appointment of the new Speaker. Her speech is expected to outline the government’s likely roadmap for the next five years.

Typically, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha is elected in the first meeting of the new MPs. Until the new Speaker is chosen, an MP, usually the most senior in experience, is appointed as the pro-tem Speaker of the House. The pro-tem Speaker oversees the initial sessions of the Lok Sabha and conducts the election for the new Speaker and deputy Speaker.

The government has yet to announce a candidate for the position of Lok Sabha Speaker. However, opposition parties are encouraging NDA allies JD(U) and TDP to nominate their own candidates.

On Monday, AAP urged the ruling NDA constituents TDP and JD(U) to ensure that the Lok Sabha Speaker is chosen from one of their parties, stating that this would benefit both the Constitution and democracy. Congress and Shiv Sena (UBP), part of the INDIA bloc, made similar suggestions.

Former Rajasthan chief minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot also stated that if the BJP retains the Lok Sabha Speaker post, NDA partners TDP and JD(U) should be prepared for potential horse-trading of their MPs.

</excerpt>

Following the Election Commission’s announcement of the Lok Sabha elections being conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, opposition parties have greeted the decision positively. However, some have raised concerns that the staggered polling schedule could favor the BJP. The Congress has also emphasized that the forthcoming elections represent a final opportunity to safeguard democracy.

The Trinamool Congress has also remarked that the poll body did not consider the West Bengal government’s proposal of conducting the elections in one or two phases. It stated that the seven-phase polling in the state once again will aid “parties with deeper pockets”.

The 44-day voting duration will be the second longest after the first Lok Sabha election in 1951-52, which extended across four months.

In a Saturday post on X, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the 2024 elections will usher in the era of Nyay (justice) for India, alluding to the party’s programs aimed at different segments of society.

“2024 Lok Sabha elections will open the ‘Door of NYAY’ for India. This would be perhaps the last chance to save Democracy and our Constitution from Dictatorship. ‘We the people of India’ will together fight against hatred, loot, unemployment, price rise and atrocities,” he posted.

Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Kharge remarked that a seven-phase election indicates that “Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to tour everywhere” and it could have been concluded in three or four phases.

“We are not anxious about what is going to happen, but Modiji putting seven phases, it means that he wants to tour everywhere. In this country, I have also contested nearly 12 elections and there hardly used to be four phases. Sometimes it used to be even one phase,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying.

Highlighting that almost all development activities will cease from Saturday due to the enforcement of the model code of conduct, the Congress leader stated, “…Stopping nearly 70-80 days, imagine how the country will progress? Because of the election code of conduct…materials will not be supplied. Budget will not be spent. So, according to me, this is not good. He could have completed within three or four phases.”

Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera remarked that these “milestone” elections are occurring under “a cloud of scams” of electoral bonds, jailing, suspension and raiding of opposition parties and politicians, and freezing of funds of the main national opposition party.

TKS Elangovan, spokesperson of the DMK, which is the opposition party with the second-highest number of Lok Sabha MPs, remarked that waiting until June 4 for the results is something that the party will need to “prepare” for.

“We anticipated that Tamil Nadu will come in the first phase (on April 19), however, waiting till June 4, is one question that the party has to get prepared for,” he said.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had previously stated that the elections in West Bengal should be conducted in one or two phases, mentioned that seven rounds of polling will aid parties with deeper pockets.

“We wanted a single or twin phase Lok Sabha election in the state. Our views were that a multiple-phase election helps political parties with deeper pockets, and gives them an advantage over others,” Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya was quoted as saying by PTI.

“The 2021 assembly elections were held in eight phases and it was said that this was being done due to the pandemic. So now, what is the reason for holding elections in seven phases? There is no valid reason,” she said, adding that the Trinamool Congress hoped that the Election Commission would work in an “impartial” manner.

“The state government’s views were not taken into account. This is a disregard for the federal structure. We fail to understand the reasons for holding such a long election. This is quite surprising,” Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray said.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief, Arvind Kejriwal, urged the public to cast their votes in favor of his party.

“The dates of Lok Sabha polls in the country have been declared. It’s a great festival of democracy. I appeal to all the countrymen to vote this time against dictatorship and hooliganism,” he said.

“The AAP works for real issues of the people and facilitates them. Strengthen our hands by voting on ‘jhaadu’ (broom, the AAP’s election symbol) wherever our candidates are contesting the polls, so that we can work for you with more energy,” he added.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut stated that the Maha Vikas Aghadi, a coalition comprising the Congress, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), and his party, is prepared for the elections. “We only want the Election Commission to ensure free and fair polls… The MVA will announce its candidates after the rally in Mumbai tomorrow,” Mr Raut told PTI.

The faction led by Sharad Pawar within the NCP, however, raised questions about why the elections were being conducted in five phases in Maharashtra, which, with 48 seats, sends the second-highest number of MPs to the Lok Sabha.

“Five phases in Maharashtra. What is the BJP trying to do? Is this fear or EVM?” Clyde Crasto, national spokesperson of the party, posted on X.

</excerpt>

The opposition MLAs caused a massive ruckus as the West Bengal government presented its annual budget in the state Assembly on Thursday, leaving the house in disarray and drawing a strong response from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Lashing out at BJP MLAs, Banerjee stated that “this is not a BJP party office” and that if the Opposition has any concerns, they can discuss them after the session.
The budget session began with the ruling TMC MLAs singing the state song and the BJP MLAs singing the national anthem concurrently.

The commotion, however, worsened when Minister of State for Finance Chandrima Bhattacharya was reading the budget and was interrupted by BJP MLAs who began sloganeering in the house.
The Bengal chief minister slammed opposition MLAs, describing their actions as “anti-Bengal.”

“If the opposition has any opinion, they can discuss it after the completion of the budget. They have the freedom to express their opinion, but this is not a BJP office. This is not the space for opposition to do politics. People have the right to know what work we have done. We condemn this dirty politics. They are against the state, anti-Bengal,” she said.
“They don’t want good for the people of Bengal. Aren’t you ashamed that you are not allowing us to present the budget? Your opinion can be expressed in your speech, but this is not your BJP party office, this is the Assembly, she added.

Further criticizing the Centre, Banerjee remembered how 147 MPs were suspended from Parliament, saying, “They should remember that they have suspended 147 MPs from Parliament, but we do not want to go down that path. You can be weak, but we are not, we will fight it out. If you have the courage, speak after the budget presentation, not before that.”

The West Bengal government released its yearly budget. The financial aid provided by Lakshmir Bhandar has been enhanced to 1,000 Rs for women in the general category and to 1,200 Rs for SC/ST women.
State Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya made the declaration while presenting the Rs 3,66,166 crore budget to the state parliament on Thursday.

</excerpt>

The Budget session of the Kerala Legislative Assembly witnessed disruptions on Monday, with a few Opposition members displaying placards to disrupt the proceedings of the House.
The protesting members carried placards that complained about the alleged delay in pension benefits for about sixty lakh people and the death by alleged suicide of differently abled man in Kozhikode, allegedly due to non-payment of social welfare pension dues.
On delay over disbursing social security pension to recipients, Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly, VD Satheesan said, “… Social security pension of more than 50 lakh people of the state has been pending since the last five months. The deserving people are either physically disabled, old, or widows. But this is not the government’s priority… The government had nothing to say about this so we had to boycott the proceedings of the assembly… Many others are on the brim of committing suicide because this pension is the only source of their income…”
Citing financial pressure, the distribution of welfare pensions was stopped for a few months.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in a pre-budget press conference, said that the central government’s policies were the main hindrances to its efforts to create a new Kerala.
Addressing the press meet, the chief minister said that despite the good achievements in its own tax revenue and domestic production, the financial crisis arising as part of the central government’s policies is tightening the state. He asserted that the opposition, which should stand up for the people against these bad policies, instead attacked the government.
As per the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission, Kerala can borrow up to 3 per cent of its domestic revenue unconditionally and 0.5 per cent subject to the implementation of reforms in the power sector.
The chief minister alleged that the central government has reduced Kerala’s loan limit with retrospective effect from 2021-22 by including the loans taken by independent institutions in the state’s loan limit. Due to this, he alleged that there has been a reduction of Rs 6,000 crore in the total credit limit for Kerala in the financial year 2023-24.
Vijayan had asserted that the main source of revenue for the state is tax allocation from the centre and resource transfer through centrally initiated schemes. The state Budget for 2024-25 will be tabled on February 5. The Budget session that started on January 25 is scheduled to continue until March 5.

</excerpt>

History must be built and scripted and PM Modi is incapable of doing so, according to Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, who spoke out after the central government renamed the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) to the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library (PMML).

She also advised the government to establish a wider political line “instead of demeaning and changing the name of something dedicated to Nehru.”

“Pandit Nehru built and laid the foundation of modern India. He built the IIMs, AIIMS, IITs, ISRO, and institutions that have kept liberal democracy alive in this country… He (PM Modi) will be remembered very negatively in history,” she told the reporters.

After a special meeting in June, it was decided that the NMML Society would change its name to PMML Society, and the museum was officially renamed on August 14. Notably, the museum is housed in Teen Murti Bhavan, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s official residence.

Right after the museum’s name was formally changed, political parties, particularly the Congress, began criticizing the move, claiming that the PM Modi-led central government solely had the “agenda of denying, distorting, defaming, and destroying the Nehruvian legacy.”

“Teen Murti Bhavan was not the residence of other PMs. It is a historical place where Nerhuji stayed from the partition till his death. They (Centre) can’t erase Jawaharlal Nehru as he is in the soil of the country,” RJD leader Manoj Jha told news agency.

Previously, the museum’s chief official advised that individuals who were critical of the move pay a visit to witness how the ‘Nehru question’ was handled. Surya Prakash, vice-chairman of the museum’s executive council, distinguished between NMML and PMML.

“If you have seen the Nehru museum earlier, you will get an idea of how the Nehru-Gandhi family, which was in charge of the institution for many years, had set up that museum. If we were to reflect on that, it would give you an idea on what kind of thinking they had projecting,” he said.

They have also raised concerns about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lack of response to the situation in the conflict-ridden state.

Jairam Ramesh, addressing the media on Saturday, voiced the Congress party’s demand for the prompt resignation of the Chief Minister of Manipur. He pointed out that even though Home Minister Amit Shah visited the troubled state, it did not yield any noticeable positive outcomes. “The PM is silent for the last sixty days and we are repeatedly demanding that the Prime Minister should break his silence..”, Ramesh, a senior Congress leader, said.
The CM has come under repeated attack from the opposition, particularly the Congress since violence broke out on 3 May in the BJP-ruled state.

Manipur has witnessed ethnic violence for nearly two months. Congress and some groups in the state have demanded Biren Singh’s resignation. Manipur CM N Biren Singh on Friday said he will not resign from his post “at this crucial juncture” amid the growing calls for his resignation. Amit Shah’s four-day visit to the state was followed by an all-party meeting chaired by him in June to restore peace in the state. Ethnic clashes broke out in the State nearly two months ago on 3 May after clashes erupted during a rally organised by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) to protest against the demand for the inclusion of Meiteis in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).

</excerpt>

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today categorically said that there is ‘no ego clash’ on the formation of a grand alliance of anti-BJP parties, and the scenario is set to be the people vs BJP in the 2024 general elections. She was speaking after her brief meeting with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and his deputy, Tejashwi Yadav.

Mamata went on to say that she has no issue bringing all like-minded Opposition parties on one platform to take on the saffron party in the big electoral tussle.

She said, “I have sent a request to Nitish Kumar. The Jayaprakash (Narayan) Ji movement began in Bihar. We may then decide where we need to go after holding an all-party meeting in Bihar. However, we must first send a message that we are one. I’ve already mentioned that I don’t have any objections. I have consistently emphasised the need to pull down the curtain on the BJP. They have grown into big heroes due to media exaggeration. She addressed the media alongside the two senior Bihar politicians, saying, “All they dabble in is jumlas and goondaism.

Regarding the Nitish Kumar party’s planned one-seat, one-candidate rule, she said that “if thought, vision, and mission are clear, there will be no issues.”

Nitish called his meeting with his West Bengal counterpart fruitful and said they discussed on different issues regarding the preparations ahead of the upcoming assembly polls in several states and the general elections next year.

“Those who are ruling now have nothing to do with the development of the country. Their only aim is to do their own publicity and nothing else.

Earlier today, Nitish Kumar landed in West Bengal with the aim of bringing like-minded Opposition parties together in one place and with no loss for Congress. He went to meet Ms Banerjee at the West Bengal state secretariat in Kolkata to talk about the solidarity among the Opposition parties. Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav will go to Lucknow today to meet Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

In fact, TMC and SP are currently not in a mood to join hands with the Congress.

When the protesting employees attempted to “gherao” (around) the secretariat, police used water cannons to disperse them.When some protesters attempted to scale police barricades while others began throwing rocks at the police, the police also used a lathi-charge.

“The Soren government has failed on every front. Promises made before the elections have not fulfilled. The law and order situation is worsening day by day. This government is only resorting to appeasement. Hence, this protest march and gherao of the secretariat was called to protest the ways of functioning this government,” one of the protestors said.
Over 20 protestors were detained during the protests, informed the police.

“Should anyone’s educational qualification be a political issue in the country? Currently, in the name of religion and caste, people are being divided. Unseasonal rains in Maharashtra have destroyed crops. Discussions should take place on such matters.

However, the Gujarat High Court declared on 31 March that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) was not required to provide the degree and post-graduate degree certificates of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, overturning the decision of the Chief Information Commission (CIC).

The single-judge bench of Justice Biren Vaishnav overturned the CIC’s directive to the PMO, Gujarat University, and Delhi University to provide information about PM Modi’s graduate and post-graduate degrees.

The bench was hearing an appeal filed by Gujarat University challenging the CIC order.

The High Court also imposed costs of Rs 25,000 on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his request for information regarding the Prime Minister’s degree certificate.

Sharad Pawar went on to say that there is “no need” for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the Adani issue because the Supreme Court has already appointed a committee that is reliable and impartial in the Adani issue’s investigation.

The parties will also address a press conference in the Constitution Club on Thursday. This decision came as a result of the meeting attended by the leaders of similar mindset on Wednesday morning in Mallikarjun Kharge’s chamber in the Parliament building.

The Parties included the Indian National Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Janata Dal (United), Trinamool Congress Party (TMC), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena, Communist Party of India, Aam Admi Party.

In response to a comment made by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Grand old party never puts anyone under pressure. I also don’t want to imply that the government is exerting pressure, but there is an instance where a person who receives a three-year sentence has his membership maintained, whereas Rahul Gandhi, who was truthful, had his membership revoked.”

Kiren Rijiju, the law minister, asserted on Monday that the Congress is attempting to put “undue pressure” on the judiciary.

Kharge slammed Centre over the quick disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Parliament post- Surat Court’s verdict on the 2019 defamation case. Kharge said, “The culmination of the hypocrisy and hypocrisy of the Modi government – In the case of killing a Dalit doctor, local court, sessions court and the high court sentenced BJP MP from Gujarat to 3 years imprisonment, but no disqualification for 16 days!”

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the government for turning down the opposition’s demand of setting up a Joint Parliamentary Committee to investigate the Adani Group issue and asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “is corrupt himself.”

Kharge sought to know if the Prime Minister has “joined hands with the corrupt”. “He (PM Modi) is corrupt himself, he is not saying anything to those who looted the country, no investigation is being done against them, JPC is not being constituted, so has he joined hands with the corrupt people?”

His remarks come a day after PM Modi said that all those deeply rooted in corruption have come together and are attacking the country’s constitutional institutions.

“We have a strong foundation of constitutional institutions. That’s why to stop India, constitutional institutions are being attacked. Conspiracies are being hatched to defame our institutions and bring down their credibility,” the Prime Minister said on Tuesday.

“When agencies take action against those who are deeply rooted in corruption, they attack the agencies. When courts pronounce order, questions are being raised on the judicial system,” he added.

The opposition including the Congress party has been demanding a JPC to probe the Adani issue. Kharge further lashed out at the Karnataka government over the issue of corruption and said that no action is being taken in the state.

“There is a govt of 40 percent there (in Karnataka) and they (BJP) are well versed with this. No action is taken against those MLAs from whom Rs 8 cr-Rs 10 cr are recovered. Here if any opp. member is found with money, they (BJP) make it a big issue. They start calling ED,” he alleged.
