New Zealand Crushes Pakistan by 73 Runs in First ODI

In a dominant performance, New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 73 runs in the opening One Day International (ODI) at Auckland’s Eden Park. The victory was underpinned by a strong 180-run stand between Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell, who led the Kiwis to a fighting score.

Once they were sent in to bat, New Zealand encountered early trouble, losing major wickets that had them reeling at 50 for 3 inside the first 15 overs. Pakistani bowlers, with Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf at the forefront, used the conditions to good effect, subjecting the Kiwi top order to intense pressure.

In the midst of this harrowing situation, Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell engineered a stunning comeback. Chapman showed a combination of nerve and determination, making a well-timed 90 off 105 balls, while Mitchell supported him with a slick 85 off 98 balls. Their association was marked by risk assessment and experienced swapping of strike, effectively nullifying the Pakistani bowling lineup.

In the latter overs, Glenn Phillips gave the team the necessary spark, sending on a late burst that witnessed him hitting 45 off 25 deliveries in lightning-quick fashion. His daredevilship towards the end of the 50 overs saw New Zealand finish their innings on an imposing total of 298 for 6.

Pakistan’s Response: Early Promise Fades

Pursuing a target of 299, Pakistan’s innings began on a promising note. Openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman set a good platform, adding 70 runs in the first 12 overs. Fakhar was particularly aggressive, attacking loose balls and maintaining the required run rate under control.

But New Zealand’s spin pair, Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, changed the course of things. Santner’s left-arm spin was particularly fruitful, as he had Fakhar Zaman caught at deep midwicket for 45 on a mistimed shot. Bracewell supported with tight lines, taking out Imam-ul-Haq, who was caught behind for 30.

The middle order had no such luck. Babar Azam, the pillar of Pakistan’s batting, was lbw to Santner for just 12 runs, a huge setback to the chase. Even Mohammad Rizwan’s courageous 50 could not help, as the mounting required run rate and frequent fall of wickets stunted Pakistan.

New Zealand’s pacers came back to mop up the tail, with Matt Henry and Ben Sears delivering pinpoint yorkers and slower balls. Pakistan was bowled out for 225 in the 47th over, 73 runs short.

Shubman Gill Takes Over as the New Vice Captain of India’s T20I and ODI Team

Shubman Gill has replaced Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain of India’s T20I side and will serve as the deputy to Suryakumar Yadav, who has been named as India’s T20I captain for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. The BCCI has announced India’s ODI and T20I squads for this tour. Gill, who was tasked with captaincy duties for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, led India to a 4-1 series victory. Following this successful stint, Gill will be taking on the vice-captaincy role in both the shortest format and the ODI format for the Sri Lanka tour.

Hardik Pandya was India’s vice-captain during their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph in the USA and West Indies, where he played a crucial role with his all-round performances. Initially seen as the successor to Rohit Sharma as T20I captain after Rohit’s retirement from the format, Hardik has now been removed from the vice-captaincy post. Despite this, Hardik remains part of the T20I squad as a player but does not feature in the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series.

Shubman Gill’s rise in the team has been remarkable. Initially a reserve player for the T20 World Cup 2024, he has quickly moved up the ranks, leading the team against Zimbabwe and now being appointed vice-captain. Two South African players will be out for the whole of the three-match ODI series against India due to injuries.

Due to a side strain, all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo and pacer Ottniel Baartman will miss the final two games of the ODI series against India. Phehlukwayo still received a left side strain during the series’ opening game in Johannesburg, while Baartman suffered a right side strain during training.

Beuran Hendricks, a fast bowler, was selected for the team to take the position of the injured players. Since making his international debut in 2014, the 33-year-old Hendricks has played for South Africa in all three forms of the game: one Test, eight ODIs, and 19 T20Is.

Hendricks was a member of the Proteas squad in the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, where he participated in one match against Afghanistan. Hendricks last played an ODI for South Africa in 2021.

In his first-ever speech during the first ODI play on Sunday, Indian youngster Sai Sudharsan said that the visitors responded well to the game.

In an interview included in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sudharsan described the Johannesburg wicket as difficult and challenging. He went on to say how wonderful his collaboration with Shreyas Iyer was.

He went on to say that his debut against the “Men in Blue” was aided by his success with India A.

“I think we have reacted well to the situation. The wicket was a bit tricky and it was not easy to bat but we had a very good partnership. What was happening on the pitch, it went great. I just tried and collected as much awareness as I could of how the conditions will be in South Africa. I played India A game before coming here, I think it helped me to adjust to the conditions,” Sudharsan said.
The 22-year-old revealed that he reacted well to the ball.
“I had reacted to the ball well. I had a small feeling that it would be nice to start the first ball with a boundary,” he added.

Arshdeep claims that hanging out with Avesh Khan the day before the opening ODI “boosted” his performance

Arshdeep Singh made light of how a photo shoot with his countryman Avesh Khan helped him perform better after he lifted the trophy for India in the first ODI against South Africa.

Arshdeep and Avesh took to the skies during India’s eight-wicket triumph, hunting in pairs with devastating results as they skittled out the Proteas for a mere 116. It proved to be the lowest total of ODIs played on home soil for South Africa.

Following the match, Arshdeep made light of the fact that his performance was greatly influenced by a picture session he had with Avesh the day before the first ODI. In a video that BCCI released on X, Arshdeep stated, “It feels good, the photoshoot that I did with you (Avesh) has given me a big boost to produce a good performance here.”

Conversely, Avesh was one wicket shy of securing a five-wicket haul. He discussed how Arshdeep provided the perfect foundation for the other bowlers to build upon.

“My approach has been to focus on things that I can control because when I didn’t play T20, I focused on ODI cricket, which has greatly benefited me. My job was to bowl wicket to wicket, and it feels fantastic. I want to give it my all in every game, so I concentrate and support my preparation,” Avesh remarked.

With the surface providing plenty of grip for fast bowlers, Arshdeep achieved his first-ever five-for in the 50-over format, seemingly having the ball at his mercy.

Avesh, who bowled first change, was equally explosive and quick, finishing with stats of 4/27 in 8 overs. The nine wickets shared by both pacers in an ODI innings against South Africa was a record for Indian pacers. India will play South Africa in the second ODI of the series on Tuesday in Gqeberha, having won the first one.

West Indies select 15-member T20I squad to face England

For their forthcoming five-game Twenty20 International series against England, the Cricket West Indies announced their 15-man team on Sunday. The inclusion of 35-year-old batting all-rounder Andre Russell was one of the T20I squad’s key takeaways. The last T20I match the Caribbean hitman participated in was against Australia in 2021. For a 20-over series, he has been called up after nearly two years. The five-match series, which begins on December 13 and ends on December 22, will be led by Rovman Powell for the Caribbean team. India to visit Sri Lanka for white-ball series in July 2024

In July 2024, Team India will visit Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI series and three Twenty20 Internationals, according to a statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Wednesday. The men’s national team of Sri Lanka will play 52 international matches in 2024, including 10 Tests, 21 ODIs, and 21 T20Is. However, the extra games that will be played during the ICC T20 World Cup are not taken into account in the T20I format.

“The Sri Lanka National Team will commence its 2024 international cricket calendar with a home series against Zimbabwe in January, which will consist of three ODIs and three T20i series. It would be followed by a series against Afghanistan during the January-February period, consisting of one test match, three ODIs, and three T20Is,” SLC said in an official statement.
The national team will then travel to Bangladesh for an all-format tour before competing in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States in 2024.
India, New Zealand, and the West Indies are also expected to tour the country for FTP tours in 2024.

Shubman Gill climbs second spot in ODI batting charts

In the most recent ICC ODI Players’ Rankings, India’s Shubman Gill moved up to second place among batsmen on the strength of his performances in the ongoing Asia Cup. India has not yet suffered a loss in the Asia Cup, and a large part of their success can be attributed to the valiant efforts of their batsmen, particularly the top order that consists of skipper Rohit Sharma, Gill, and talisman Virat Kohli. Gill isn’t the only Indian batsman to move up the rankings; Rohit and Kohli both rose two spots to ninth and eighth, respectively, in the most recent rankings.

Asia Cup: Javagal Srinath officiating 250th ODI as match-refree

In Pallekele on Monday, Javagal Srinath, a former Indian pacer who is now a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, will officiate his 250th men’s One Day International. Former India fast bowler Srinath was a member of the squad that advanced to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final in 2003, finishing with 236 wickets in 67 Test matches and 315 wickets in 229 ODIs. Three years later, according to an ICC press release, he was appointed as a match referee.

Srinath, who will become the fourth to reach the milestone of 250 ODIs as a match referee after Ranjan Madugalle, Chris Broad and Jeff Crowe, said he was privileged to have officiated in so many matches.
Javagal Srinath: “It feels great to be reaching this milestone as a match referee. It has been 17 years on the circuit for me and quite unbelievable that I have now officiated in more ODIs than I played.”
“I am privileged to be still associated with the game. I have had a wonderful run since my international debut as match referee in a Test match between Sri Lanka and South Africa in Colombo back in 2006 and will strive to do my best in the coming years,” he added.

Bangladesh ready for Asia Cup 2023, Tanzid Hasan receives maiden call-up

Bangladesh announced its 17-member squad for Asia Cup 2023, beginning on 30 August onwards. Shakib Al Hasan will lead the Bangladesh Cricket team, with 22-year-old top-order batter Tanzid Hasan being given a maiden national side call-up.

Shakib Al Hasan was recently named the new Bangladesh captain after Tamim Iqbal stepped down from the role last week.

Hasan and Mohammad Naim are two of the opening batters who will act as a cover for veteran Tamim Iqbal, who is not playing in the tournament due to a back injury. Hasan had scored three half-centuries in the recent ACC Emerging Asia Cup and had an extraordinary Dhaka Premier League (DPL) last season.

Naim and Shamim played against Afghanistan in T20Is last month, and their performances also got them included in the ODI side recently, while Mahedi’s selection will boost the spin bowling attack. Mahedi did not have an exceptional DPL season but performed way better in ACC Emerging Asia Cup.

Tamim, who also gave up on ODI captaincy, is in rehab for his injury. He met a specialist in London last month and is working on his health to stay fit for the ODI series against New Zealand, which is starting on 21 September onwards.

ICC revise ODI World Cup fixtures, India set to face Pakistan on this date

In addition to moving the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 to a different day, eight other games have also been altered. The updated schedule for the upcoming World Cup in India was announced in a statement by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday.

The clash between India and Pakistan was originally slated to take place in Ahmedabad on Sunday, October 15, but this clash has been moved a day earlier and will now be held at the same venue on Saturday, October 14.
As a result, England’s fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi will be moved from Saturday, October 14 and will now be played 24 hours later on Sunday, October 15.
Pakistan’s contest against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad has moved from Thursday, 12 October to now being played on Tuesday, 10 October and Australia’s big match against South Africa in Lucknow moved back 24 hours and will now be played on Thursday, October 12 instead of Friday, October 13.

Similar to this, New Zealand’s match against Bangladesh, which was originally scheduled as a day match for October 14 in Chennai, has been pushed back and will now be played as a day-night match on Friday, October 13. The timing of England’s game against Bangladesh in Dharamsala has changed slightly from the initial phase of the tournament; the match will now begin at 10:30AM (local time) instead of 10:30PM as it was originally planned.

Ireland Cricket releases new jerseys for ODI and T20I formats

Cricket Ireland has unveiled its latest ODI and T20I jerseys and kits for the men’s and women’s squads.

The announcement was made through the organization’s official Twitter handle, where it urged fans to pre-order the new kit ranges on the Cricket Ireland website.

The men’s team recently lost a test match and two series against Bangladesh, and are set to face them again in their home conditions for a three-match ODI series.

Shortlist for ICC Player of the Month Award for April unveiled

The ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for April will be contested by two in-form batsmen and a spinner who broke a record, following a series of outstanding performances.

Fakhar Zaman was at the forefront of Pakistan’s chase, smashing an unbeaten 180 runs to help them win by 10 balls and 6 wickets against New Zealand in Rawalpindi. He hit 17 boundaries and six sixes, his second century in a row after scoring 117 runs off 114 balls in the first game at the same venue.

Fakhar won the Player of the Match award for his contribution to the victory. He began the month with a quickfire 47 runs in the first T20I against New Zealand and, despite not performing well in the next two T20Is, bounced back in the ODIs, his favored format.

In his 67-match ODI career, Fakhar has scored 3,082 runs at an average of 49.71 and a strike rate of almost 95.

In seven Tests, Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya achieved 50 wickets, making him the spinner who reached this milestone in the fewest number of matches in the longest format.

He secured this record during the second match of the series against Ireland in Galle, where he took 17 wickets. On the final day of the game, he caught Paul Stirling, who had scored a century in the first innings.

Meanwhile, Mark Chapman of New Zealand played exceptionally well in the T20I series against Pakistan. He scored a total of 290 runs in the five-match series, including unbeaten knocks of 71 off 42 deliveries and 104 off 57 balls in the fourth and fifth T20Is, respectively.

Despite losing the first match of the series, Chapman was the top scorer for New Zealand with 34 off 27 balls. He followed it up with an unbeaten 65 off 40 balls in the second match, but unfortunately, the visitors lost by 38 runs.

Shreyas Iyer injured; ruled out of ODI series against New Zealand

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Tuesday that India team star batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury.

“He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Rajat Patidar as a replacement for Shreyas Iyer,” BCCI said.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday in Hyderabad, India will play the first ODI match against New Zealand.

India will begin the series with the 50-over matches starting from 18 January which consist of three T20Is and three ODIs.

Earlier in 2022, Iyer scored 1,609 international runs, which consist of one century and 14 half-centuries.

The 3rd and final ODI between India and Sri Lanka is set to begin at the Greenfield Stadium in Trivandrum around 1:30 pm today.

The last two ODI matches were won by India, sealing the three-match series. The inconsequential match is still crucial since Sri Lanka is now aiming to win more than ever. Team India is however eyeing a clean sweep with a victory in the final ODI.

With the series already in India’s favour, Ishan Kishan may get a chance in place of Shubman Gill, who opened for India in the first two ODIs.

It will be interesting to see what other changes the team management makes, since the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand follow this series and the series against Australia is set right after that.

On Thursday India will be playing their second ODI match against Sri Lanka and India will focus to win the series.

Earlier India played three T20 International matches against Sri Lanka and that was headed by Hardik Pandya which India won 2-1 on Saturday.

The game saw the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who skipped the three-match T20I series. In the match team, India showed their power-pack performance against Sri Lanka in today’s match in which the top players who played their best are Virat Kohli who hit a century and made 113 runs in 87 balls, Rohit Sharma scored 83 runs in 67 balls and Shubman Gill scored 70 runs in 60 balls.

Since 2020, India has won 10 matches in 13 ODIs at home and the team will be looking forward to winning this series as well.

Earlier on Monday Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out from the ODIs series on which Rohit Sharma said, “Very unfortunate. The poor guy has been working really hard at the NCA. He felt stiffness in his back a couple of days ago and if Jasprit Bumrah is saying he is not feeling well, you have to pull him out. We need to be extra careful with Bumrah.”

Moreover, the three-match ODI against Sri Lanka will be held in Guwahati, Kolkata, and Trivandrum on 10, 12, and 15 January respectively.

IND vs SL: Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of ODI series against Sri Lanka

The three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka is starting on Tuesday and star pacer Jasprit Bumrah could likely miss the series.

According to the BCCI sources, “Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the ODI series against Sri Lanka as he is not traveling with the team for the first ODI. The BCCI also doesn’t want to rush him into action so soon on the field. He has to play in major series in the upcoming days.”

Meanwhile, the star pacer Bumrah was included in India’s ODI squad by the All-India Senior Selection Committee.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka,” the BCCI said.

The BCCI further stated, “The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He will be joining the Team India ODI squad soon.”

Since September Bumrah has not played in competitive cricket due to a back injury and was also ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Flamboyant Hardik to lead India in T20Is, Rohit returns for ODIs

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will lead India in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka at home, starting on January 3, while opener Rohit Sharma will return for the three ODIs that follow, the BCCI announced on Tuesday. The experienced players Rohit, Virat Kohli and Rahul didn’t find a space in the T20I squad but they all have been included for the ODI series that begins on January 10. On the other hand, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who underwent a knee-surgery, along with pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the T20 World Cup with back injury, have not been included in both the squads. Dhawan has been battling poor form in the ODI format this year and his average of 34.40 and the strike rate of 74.21 in 2022 is the lowest he has registered ever since his comeback in 2013. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant was not included in either the ODI or the T20I squad and the BCCI media release didn’t clarify if he was injured, rested or dropped. The wicketkeeper-batter didn’t feature in the ODIs in Bangladesh as well before returning for the two-match Test series. The other notable omission is that of pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar while Mohd. Shami returned for ODIs after missing the 50-over match series against Bangladesh.

Interestingly, Hardik, who will lead India again in the shortest format after being named skipper for the series in New Zealand immediately after the T20 World Cup, has also been elevated as the vicecaptain in the 50 over format despite KL Rahul’s presence in the squad. Middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav will be Hardik’s deputy in the T20I setup. The selectors have also included uncapped pacers Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar in the squad for the three-match T20I series. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have been omitted from the T20I squad in favour of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi.

The only surprise call is that of Shivam Mavi, who received his maiden call-up to the national squad. The 24-year-old UP pacer has been included for the T20I series. While Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal are part of both the squads, Kuldeep Yadav finds place only in the ODI side. IND vs NZ: New Zealand won series against India, match called off due to rain

India lost the three-match ODI series against New Zealand 0-1 as the third and final ODI of the three-match series was called off due to rain.

Meanwhile, in 18 overs the black caps were able to score 104/1 after which rain intervened and put all action to rest.

Earlier in the morning India batted first and scored 219 in 47.3 overs with Washington Sundar scoring 51 runs and Shreyas Iyer scoring 49 runs.

Moreover, New Zealand was comfortably placed at 104 for one in 18 overs after which rain started and the umpires decided to call off the contest.

The openers Finn Allen and Devon Conway gathered 97 runs without losing a wicket and later Allen brought up his half-century in just 50 balls.

Earlier the first ODI New Zealand won the first ODI match by seven wickets and due to rain, the second match was also canceled.

Earlier during a pre-match press conference, bowler Arshdeep said, “The weather is not in our hands, Weather is something we cannot control. So it is important that we give our best whenever we get a chance. If there is a break in the game due to rain, we have to always be mentally and physically prepared for the match to start anytime. It is our endeavor that the process is followed properly and there is no shortage of preparation. And the plans that are made should be executed in the match.”

However, in the first match, New Zealand chased down the target of 306 set by India.

‘It will be a good exposure for the young players’, says Shikhar Dhawan

However, the chance has been given to large numbers of young players as many senior players rested. Deepak Chahar also returns after missing the T20 World Cup due to a back injury.

The All India Senior Selection Committee on Monday announced the 14-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. The much-awaited Asia Cup cricket tournament is to begin on August 27 this year. This is the 15th edition of the Asia Cup, which will be played between six teams (main event) in the UAE.

Defending champion India is the most successful team in Asia Cup. India has won this trophy 7 times. The previous edition of the Asia Cup was held in ODI format. But this time the Asia Cup has been organized in T20 format.

ICC ODI ranking Jasprit Bumrah becomes No.1 bowler

India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has reclaimed the throne of the world’s No.1 ODI bowler. His match-winning and career-best bowling against England (6/19) propelled him to the No.1 spot in the ICC ODI rankings again.

With this, he surpassed his former Mumbai Indians teammate Trent Boult and Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi. Jasprit Bumrah became the world’s No.1 bowler in ODIs for the first time in 2018. But due to a lack of focus on ODIs, he came down to No.3.

But in the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday, he has reclaimed his spot with 718 points. Trent Boult is currently on second spot with 712 points, while Shaheen Afridi is on third spot with 681 points. No other Indian bowler is currently in the top 10 rankings.

Earlier, India beat England by ten wickets in the first ODI of the 3-match ODI series against England. Jasprit Bumrah was the hero of this victory for India. The English batters knelt in front of Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling.

Moreover, Bumrah bowled three maiden overs in his spell. He took six wickets by giving just 19 runs in the first ODI. This was India’s third best bowling performance in ODIs after Stuart Binny and Anil Kumble.
