India’s defence stocks have made a dramatic comeback. Down through most of 2024, the sector has now scaled a historic market capitalisation high of Rs 11.23 lakh crore. A combination of investor hopes, rising geopolitical tensions, and robust policy support has driven the rally.

The Nifty India Defence Index has rallied handsomely since its February 2025 low, recording more than 50 per cent gains. The fresh market cap crosses the last July 2024 high of Rs 10.09 lakh crore, registering a sharp change of investor sentiment.

Sharp Correction Followed by Strong Rally

The defense industry went through a challenging phase during the previous year. Between July 2024 and February 2025, the Nifty India Defence Index slid 33 per cent. Sentiment was subdued as investors awaited new signals. That changed rapidly this year. In March, the index rose 24.6 per cent. It gained 11.5 per cent in April too, and has already risen 9 per cent through May thus far.

This consistent increase has taken the index far above its previous highs. It is now almost 62 per cent above its February low of Rs 6.95 lakh crore. This upswing is an indication of increased faith in India’s defence sector’s long-term growth.

Policy and Global Factors Drive Interest

Government emphasis on indigenous defence production remains the driving force for investor attention. Policies such as import curbs, Make in India initiatives, and defense budget hikes provide support to this trend.

Meanwhile, events abroad and increasing border tensions have led investors to move into defence assets, viewed as safer options at times of uncertainty.

Rally Remains Narrow for Now

While the top-line gains are robust, the rally is selective. Just six out of 18 stocks in the Nifty India Defence Index have made new highs. This indicates that investors are preferring a few top names while remaining guarded on others.

Nevertheless, the overall trend is encouraging. With defence capital expenditure on the up and policy supportive, the defence sector in India can perhaps enjoy sustained inflows. The rebound after February is more than a bounce — it heralds a new cycle for the long-underperforming sector.

Know Details Here

<excerpt>Indian markets rebounded after a major crash on Monday. Know why Sensex and Nifty recovered strongly today.
</excerpt>

Indian markets recovered on Tuesday after a huge crash on Monday in fear of a trade war triggered by tariffs from the US against its trading partners. Tuesdays’ recovery was spearheaded by bargain hunting and a general recovery in Asian markets.

Indian Markets Rebound Sensex and Nifty Rally Over 2%

The US markets were the first to have eased a bit following the shock of the tariffs declared by President Donald Trump. Shortly after the US futures gains on Tuesday, Japan’s index Nikkei 225 rose by 6 per cent.

Investors and traders in India also took an optimistic stance today, and both benchmark indexes – Sensex and Nifty – are rising over 2%. At 3.30 pm, the Sensex closed at 74,227.08 while the Nifty regained 374.25 points to close at 22,535.85.

The Nifty and Sensex had plummeted 3.2% and 3% respectively on Monday their largest single-day fall in 10 months as a global recession fear gripped the markets in wake of fresh US tariffs.

Why Did the Indian Markets Rise?

The Indian markets regained their poise just hours after US President Donald Trump announced that Japan would be sending a delegation for negotiations, reviving hopes that Washington will ease its tariff line.

But the US President also promised extra 50% duties on Chinese imports, if Beijing continues to impose retaliatory tariffs, topping optimism.

Analyst Insights on the Rebound

Analysts explain that the rebound was in the pipeline since the markets are already oversold.

“The rebound comes as no surprise as markets are oversold and remain ripe for a rebound led by tariff-agnostic companies and sectors,” said Yogesh Kansal, cofounder of online trading platform Appreciate.

IT, Banking, and Titan Drive Gains

Although all 13 large Indian sectoral indexes traded higher, the comeback was dominated by IT and banking-finance shares. Infosys, L&T, HCL Tech and Tech Mahindra were up at least 3% from yesterday’s close.

Titan also rose 5% after the jeweller and watchmaker announced standalone revenue grew 25% in the March quarter on the back of rising gold prices.

Sensex jumped over 1,100 points, and Nifty soared too.
</excerpt>

A day after facing its sharpest fall in 10 months, the Indian stock market bounced back with strong momentum on Tuesday, April 8. In early trade, investor sentiment appeared to recover from the US tariff-driven panic that rocked global equities the previous session.

At 9:15 am, the BSE Sensex opened 1,141.14 points higher, gaining 1.56% to reach 74,279.04. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty jumped 401.10 points or 1.81% to open at 22,562.70.

Among the 30 Sensex constituents, Tata Steel led the rally with a sharp 4.98% rise, trading at ₹136.05. Titan Company followed, up 4.71% at ₹3,166.05, and Tata Motors gained 3.48%, trading at ₹600. Only Sun Pharmaceutical Industries remained in the red, slipping 0.34% to ₹1,662.75.

Sector-wise, the Nifty Consumer Durables Index surged the most, climbing 3.25% to 35,112.40. The Nifty Metal Index followed with a 2.99% gain at 8,080.90, while the Nifty Realty Index rose 2.42% to 795.

The rebound comes after a brutal session on Monday, April 7, where the Sensex plunged 2,226.79 points or 2.95% to close at 73,137.90. The Nifty fell 742.85 points or 3.24% to settle at 22,161.60. The massive selloff was triggered by investor fears linked to new US tariffs, resulting in panic across global markets.

On Monday, Tata Steel saw the steepest drop among Sensex stocks, falling 7.73% to ₹129.60.
In the metal space, Lloyds Metals & Energy tanked 8.86%, National Aluminium fell 7.86%, and JSW Steel dropped 7.53%. Among real estate stocks, Anant Raj declined 7.66%, Sobha 7.46%, and DLF 7.03%. In media, Zee Entertainment Enterprises fell 6.80%, followed by PVR Inox (5.55%) and Dish TV (4.35%).

FIIs sell big, DIIs buy bigger

Meanwhile, the 10-year Indian Government Bond saw a 0.23% decline, trading at ₹102.05.

</excerpt>

The Indian stock market is trading cautiously ahead of the Union Budget presentation as investors expect some tax relief. The benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened flat in early trade. The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 136 points while NSE Nifty rose by 20 points. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is slated to present her historic 8th successive Budget at 11 AM. The Budget is likely to outline the economic roadmap for the financial year ahead. Most sectoral indices have seen an upward movement ahead of the Budget speech. Nifty Realty and Nifty Energy led the gains as investors expect increased capital expenditure and energy sector allocations.

While mixed, the Nifty Oil and Gas, Nifty Finance, and Nifty Bank moved around. Renewable energy stocks like Inox Wind, Inox Wind Energy, KPI Green, and Suzlon moved up, anticipating positive policy announcements. Defence stocks like BEML and Hindustan Aeronautics moved up too.

India equity markets have had extreme growth since the pandemic. This spurt has been because of the growing number of retail investors. During the last four months, this trend was a downward trend; however, still, the government is optimistic that the market is resilient. During yesterday’s release of the Economic Survey, it was noted that a “meaningful correction in 2025 could have a cascading effect and ensure higher participation of new retail investors.

India remains the world’s largest major economy which is growing fastest, Chief Economic Adviser V Ananta Nageswaran said. This survey projects 6.3-6.8% for the financial year beginning this April.

BJP’s Historic Win Boosts Confidence

The Nifty 50 index began the day flat at 24,489.60 points, while the BSE Sensex dipped by 0.16 percent in early trading to 80,248.60 points.

Global markets generally responded positively to Trump’s win, with experts noting the potentially transformative impact of his administration. However, analysts expect his policies to have mixed effects across sectors. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, stated, “Trump’s victory could lead to highly transformative decisions as he has the support of both the Congress and Senate. His ‘America First’ approach may strengthen the U.S. economy, but a proposed 60% tariff on Chinese imports and additional tariffs on other imports could drive inflation, impacting the Federal Reserve’s current approach to rate cuts. This could negatively affect global markets.”

In sector performance on the National Stock Exchange, Nifty Auto, Nifty Pharma, Nifty IT, and Nifty FMCG saw gains, while Nifty Bank, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Private Bank declined.

Key companies, including Mahindra & Mahindra, Trent, Rail Vikas Nigam, Linde India, Lupin, NHPC, and Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail, are set to report their quarterly earnings today.

Elsewhere in Asia, Japan’s Nikkei fell by 0.4 percent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose by 0.68 percent. Taiwan’s weighted index and South Korea’s KOSPI index were up by 1.07 percent and 0.41 percent, respectively. China’s Shanghai Composite gained 0.75 percent, responding positively to Trump’s re-election. U.S. markets surged on Wednesday following Trump’s victory, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices both rising over 2 percent.

The Indian stock market took a significant hit on Monday, November 4, with widespread selling that impacted major indices. Both the Sensex and Nifty 50 plummeted over 1%, while mid-cap and small-cap stocks experienced losses of up to 2%.

Key Indices Performance

Sensex: The Sensex opened slightly lower at 79,713.14, down from its previous close of 79,724.12. However, it continued to slide, reaching 78,836.99, marking a drop of over 1%.

Nifty 50: Nifty opened at 24,315.75, marginally lower than its previous close of 24,304.35, and further dipped to 24,017.10.

Midcap and Smallcap Indices: Both indices on the BSE fell up to 2%, adding to the market’s losses.

Drop in Market Capitalisation

The market capitalization of companies listed on the BSE declined sharply. From ₹448 lakh crore in the previous session, it fell to nearly ₹442 lakh crore, effectively causing a loss of around ₹6 lakh crore in one trading day.

Sectoral Losses

Sector-wise, several indices saw substantial declines:

Nifty Oil & Gas, Media, Consumer Durables, and Realty: Dropped by 2-3%.

Nifty Bank, Auto, FMCG, Metal, FMCG, and PSU Bank: Each of these sectors fell by around 1%.

Factors Driving the Market Down

Experts identified a few primary reasons behind Monday’s steep fall:

1. Uncertainty Surrounding US Elections

Investor caution ahead of the US presidential election is causing global market jitters. With opinion polls predicting a tight race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, market volatility is anticipated in the short term.

“In the next couple of days, markets globally will be focused on the US presidential elections, and there can be near-term volatility in response to the election outcome. However, this is likely to be short-lived and economic fundamentals like US growth, inflation, and the Fed action will influence the market trend,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

2. High Valuations

Even after recent market corrections, valuations remain elevated, which some experts consider uncomfortable. According to Trendlyne, the Nifty 50’s current price-to-earnings (PE) ratio stands at 22.7, which is above its two-year average PE of 22.2 and close to its one-year average PE of 22.7.

Experts Call for Fiscal and Monetary Measures

Banking and market expert Ajay Bagga emphasized the need for fiscal and monetary support to boost demand. “The festival season is key to annual consumption numbers,” Bagga noted, adding that upcoming weddings and private spending could help offset slower growth.

Sectoral Trends Show Mixed Performance

A mixed trend appeared across sectors. While Nifty Bank recorded a slight rise, Nifty Auto, FMCG, Media, and Metal sectors struggled. Notably, Nifty IT fell by over 1.5%, marking a weak performance in the tech sector.

Cipla Leads Gainers as IT Stocks Decline

Cipla emerged as a top performer with an 8% gain in the Nifty 50. In contrast, major IT stocks like Infosys, TCS, and Tech Mahindra faced selling pressure, ranking as top losers of the day. Foreign investors continued to sell, with net sales totaling Rs 4,613.65 crore on Wednesday.

Analysts Eye Key Support Levels for Bulls

Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities, noted that “Bulls need to hold the Tweezer bottom near 24,130 and push above 24,500 for a bullish trigger.” He suggested that the market may be oversold in the short term, hinting at a possible recovery if support levels hold.

Mixed Asian Market Movements

Asian markets showed mixed performance on Thursday. Japan’s Nikkei declined by 0.4%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose by 0.79%. South Korea’s KOSPI index fell by 0.75%. U.S. markets mirrored this cautious trend, with the S&P 500 down 0.33% and the Nasdaq falling 0.56% on Wednesday.

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty reached new all-time highs in early trading today, following positive regional trends and encouraging US economic data that alleviated growth concerns. Investors are also awaiting domestic quarterly growth figures.

In early trade, the NSE Nifty 50 index climbed to 25,333.28, and the S&P BSE Sensex rose to 82,725.28, with both indices setting fresh records.

The equity markets have been on a steady rise, buoyed by expectations of a US interest rate cut and an influx of foreign funds.

Conversely, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, NTPC, and Bharti Airtel lagged.

The Nifty index extended its winning streak to twelve consecutive sessions on Friday, marking its longest-ever rally and pushing the market to new highs on hopes of an upcoming US interest rate cut.

In the automotive sector, TVS Motor reported a 13% increase in domestic two-wheeler sales for August, while Hero MotoCorp’s domestic sales grew by nearly 5%.

India’s economic growth for the April-June quarter was 6.7% year-on-year, down from 7.8% in the previous quarter but still the fastest among major global economies. Sakshi Gupta, Principal Economist at HDFC Bank, noted that this growth was achieved despite a typical seasonal slowdown and the impact of the national general elections.

Broader Asian share markets began the week quietly as investors prepared for a data-heavy week, including a key US jobs report that could influence whether the anticipated rate cut this month will be modest or substantial.

Global Market Impact

The recent stock market crash has had a significant impact worldwide. Major markets such as the United States, Japan, and other Asian countries have been affected, with a domino effect reaching across the globe.

Key Factors:

A dismal U.S. jobs report showing an unemployment rate of 4.3% has fueled fears of a slowing economy and potential recession.

Most Likely, the market will witness some moves largely specific to stocks this week, amid current earnings season.

The participants of the market have also tolerated high inflation figures recorded in June. Currently, they are also looking at upcoming budget. Which is going to be unveiled on July 23.

This 2024-25, Sensex & Nifty have currently accumulated the returns of 11-13 percent. Tommorrow on Wednesday, the Indian stock market will be closed for Muharram.

What Future Holds?

Talking about future, chief investment strategist VK Vijayakumar of Geojit Financial services said, ‘After the roller coaster ride last week the market is likely to take a breather in the near-term. It is important to understand that the major driving force in this bull market is the Indian retail investors including HNIs. Big selling by FIIs is getting eclipsed by the aggressive buying of DIIs and retail investors. The fact that retail investors bought equity for Rs 21179 crores on June 4th, the day Nifty tanked 5.9 per cent, indicates the buying power and optimism of the retail investors.’

The Indian stock market erased some of the previous day’s losses and ended higher after NDA allies pledged support for the alliance to form a government for the third term. The Nifty 50 index gained 735 points, closing at 22,620, while the BSE Sensex surged 1,303 points to finish at 74,382. The Bank Nifty index ended 2,126 points higher at 49,054. In the broader market, the mid-cap index outperformed the frontline Indian indices, with the advance-decline ratio rising sharply to 3.49:1.

Vaishali Parekh’s Stock Picks and Market Outlook

Vaishali Parekh, Vice President of Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher, noted that the Nifty 50 index has moved above the 50-EMA zone of 22,400. She added that a decisive breach above 22,900 by the 50-stock index could further improve the Indian stock market’s bias and sentiment. Parekh emphasized that the Bank Nifty index needs to sustain above the significant 50-EMA level of 48,150 to maintain a positive bias.

For today’s stock recommendations, Vaishali Parekh suggested three stocks to buy:

HDFC Life: Buy at ₹552, target ₹577, stop loss ₹540.

ITC: Buy at ₹430, target ₹455, stop loss ₹420.

Coal India: Buy at ₹460, target ₹482, stop loss ₹450.

Nifty and Bank Nifty Analysis

On the outlook for Nifty, Parekh mentioned, “Nifty, after witnessing heavy erosion a day before, bulls regained some lost strength to gain 735 points, ending near the 22,600 zone, moving above the significant 50-EMA level of 22,400. The index has support near the 21,800 level, and a decisive breach above 22,900 could further improve bias and sentiment.”

Regarding the Bank Nifty, she said, “The Bank Nifty gained more than 4% to move past the 49,000 zone with decent recovery witnessed. With support near the 47,300 level, it needs to sustain above the 50-EMA level of 48,150 to maintain a positive bias. A decisive breach above the 49,700 zone could confirm further upside potential, provided there are no unexpected political developments.”

Parekh added that Nifty’s immediate support is at 22,450, while resistance is at 22,900. The Bank Nifty’s daily range is expected to be between 48,200 and 50,300.

</excerpt>

In the aftermath of the volatile stock market behavior following the Lok Sabha Election 2024 results, the Nifty FMCG Index has exhibited notable resilience. It surged by approximately 5 percent, reaching the 5,800 mark during the early morning session, and recorded a 1 percent rise on Tuesday despite the broader market downturn triggered by disappointing election outcomes. This performance underscores sustained investor interest in major FMCG companies such as Dabur, Marico, Britannia, COLPAL, and Bikaji.

FMCG Majors Hit New Highs

Amid the stock market turbulence, shares of Marico, Britannia, COLPAL, and Bikaji Foods reached new lifetime highs, while Dabur’s share price hit a new 52-week high within minutes of the market opening. This trend highlights the sector’s robust performance despite broader market challenges.

Strategic Moves by Investors

Avinash Gorakshkar, Head of Research at Profitmart Securities, analyzed the underlying factors driving the strength in FMCG stocks. “Typically, investors turn to FMCG, pharma, IT, and healthcare segments during sharp market declines. Following the market crash on Tuesday due to disappointing election results, investors shifted to these safe havens. This strategic move led to the Nifty FMCG Index being the only index to end higher on Tuesday, while Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare, and Nifty IT were the least affected indexes in the previous session,” explained Gorakshkar.

Positive Outlook for Nifty FMCG Index

Ganesh Dongre, Senior Manager of Technical Research at Anand Rathi, provided an optimistic forecast for the Nifty FMCG Index. “With the index breaking its hurdle at the 5,600 mark, it is now poised to register a 2-3 percent rise and potentially reach the 6,000 level. Importantly, the index has crucial support at the 5,200 level,” he stated. This clear direction helps investors and traders plan their market strategies with greater confidence.

FMCG Stocks to Watch

Sumeet Bagadia, Executive Director at Choice Broking, highlighted several FMCG stocks that are likely to continue attracting investor interest. “Traders and investors should consider shares of Marico, COLPAL, Dabur, and Heritage Foods, as these stocks show positive chart patterns,” Bagadia advised.

Dabur: Share price may rise to ₹650 in the near term.

Heritage Foods: Expected to reach ₹575 per share in the short term.

Marico: Share price may touch ₹630 in the near term.

COLPAL: Set to reach ₹3,200 level.

The remarkable performance of the Nifty FMCG Index amidst market volatility reflects a strategic shift by investors towards reliable and stable sectors. With strong support levels and positive forecasts, the FMCG sector continues to be a beacon of resilience on Dalal Street. Investors are advised to monitor these stocks closely and consider them for their portfolios in the current market environment.

</excerpt>

The Indian stock market witnessed a significant surge today, following an initially lukewarm opening. Strong support from bullish investors emerged after TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu reaffirmed his party’s commitment to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) post-Lok Sabha election results.

Market Rally Driven by Political Clarity

Naidu’s statement, “TDP is firmly with the NDA,” came as a relief to investors. His affirmation dispelled widespread rumors that had caused uncertainty in the Indian stock market after the BJP failed to secure an absolute majority, falling short by around 20 seats. This clarity led to a robust recovery in the markets, with investors engaging in bottom fishing at lower levels.

Indices at New Highs

The Nifty 50 index reached an intraday high of 22,445, marking a rise of over 2%. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex climbed to an intraday peak of 73,851, a 1.90% increase from its previous close of 72,079. The Bank Nifty index also surged, touching 48,000 shortly after Naidu’s declaration.

Expert Insights

Avinash Gorakshkar, Head of Research at Profitmart Securities, highlighted the impact of political uncertainty on market performance. “The Lok Sabha Election results were below market estimates, which had anticipated a strong BJP-led government for a third term. The absence of an absolute majority raised doubts among investors, which were alleviated by Naidu’s statement.”

Despite the positive market response, experts advised caution. Sumeet Bagadia, Executive Director at Choice Broking, emphasized that the breach of the 22,100 to 22,200 mark by the Nifty 50 should not be viewed as a definitive trend reversal. “We need to wait for some more time, as the market may become bullish once the 50-stock index breaches its crucial hurdle of 22,500 on a closing basis,” he noted.

Naidu’s Commitment to NDA

Addressing the media after the BJP-led NDA secured a historic third consecutive term, Naidu reiterated his support for the alliance. “Andhra Pradesh voters have given a verdict for a better Andhra, and both TDP and BJP will work together to meet their expectations,” he stated.

Today’s market rally underscores the influence of political stability on investor confidence. While the positive momentum is encouraging, market analysts urge traders to proceed with caution and monitor key resistance levels for a clearer trend indication.

</excerpt>

The stock market faced a significant downturn on Tuesday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) struggled to secure a decisive lead in the ongoing national election results. By 11 AM, it became clear that the BJP on its own is unlikely to cross the halfway mark, although it is certain that with allies, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form the government at the center. The idea of a coalition government led by the BJP has led to widespread market anxiety and a sharp decline in stock indices.

Since the opening of trading on Tuesday, investor sentiment has been notably bearish. The Bombay Stock Exchange’s benchmark Sensex plummeted by 3905.15 points. Similarly, the Nifty 50 index suffered a substantial drop, falling 1061.05 points by 11 AM. The decline in stocks was widespread, affecting various sectors including banking, automotive, and technology. Major companies like Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, and Infosys saw significant drops in their share prices, contributing to the overall market downturn. Shares of Bank of Baroda, PNB, SBI, IndusInd Bank, Bandhan Bank, and Axis Bank slipped up to 9 percent, compared to a 5 percent decline in the Bank Nifty index.

Market analysts attribute the steep decline to political uncertainty. The BJP, which has been the dominant force in Indian politics for the past decade, is seen as a pro-industry party whose policies have generally favored economic growth and market stability. The failure to secure a clear majority by the BJP on its own raises concerns about the formation of a stable government and the continuation of economic reforms. Sunil Shah, a market expert, commented, “Yesterday, the market acted on the outcome of exit polls. The early trends are showing that the gap or the lead is not that big, so the market is reacting to that. The market will remain volatile throughout the day.”

In addition to political uncertainty, global market trends and domestic economic indicators have also played a role in the current market volatility. Rising oil prices, inflation concerns, and recent global economic slowdowns have compounded the impact of election jitters on investor sentiment. As the day progresses, the market will remain focused on the final tally and the BJP-led NDA’s final majority figure.

</excerpt>

The Indian equity witnessed a significant market crash on Tuesday as soon as trading commenced at 9:15 am, despite early trends indicating a lead for the BJP-led NDA alliance. However, these early trends also suggested that the opposition INDIA bloc’s seat tally might surpass what exit polls had anticipated.

Both the frontline indices, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, opened 2% lower on Tuesday, following their surge of more than 3% each on Monday. The selling pressure intensified quickly, leading to a sharp decline of 3.5% for both indices. The Sensex hit a low of 73,659, while the Nifty reached a low of 21,179 on Tuesday.

The market heavyweight Reliance Industries experienced a significant drop of over 4%, while stocks of the Adani Group plummeted by up to 10%.

V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, emphasized that the market had already factored in a clear win for the NDA and a majority for the BJP, evident from the 733-point rally in the Nifty the previous day. He advised investors to refrain from rushing into buying decisions, even if the results confirm the exit polls, suggesting instead to remain invested in large caps and consider profit booking in small caps.

Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, highlighted that the Nifty50 had formed a hanging man candlestick pattern on the daily chart, indicating a potential trend reversal. However, he emphasized that the outcome of the general elections would likely influence the market trend, leading to considerable volatility on both sides.

Gaggar also noted that while all sectors had shown strong outperformance in the previous session, with some reaching record levels, it was prudent to wait for a clearer picture amidst the probable volatility.

This abrupt market crash underscores the cautious sentiment among investors, who are closely monitoring the evolving political landscape for potential implications on the economy and market stability

</excerpt>

Benchmark index of stock market NSE NIFTY soared to its record highest level on Monday which was attributed to the results of the exit polls that have predicted NDA win.

Benchmark index of stock market NSE NIFTY soared to its record highest level on Monday which was attributed to the results of the exit polls that have predicted a return of the Narendra Modi led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre. The market for the last few days had witnessed a dip in wake of an uncertainty in some quarters regarding the election results that will be declared on Tuesday.

The market sentiment got a major boost from the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Friday which said that India’s gross domestic product (GDP) for the January-March quarter of fiscal year 2023-24 (Q4FY24) was 7.8 percent. For the financial year 2024, the Indian economy grew by 8.2 percent, surpassing expectations.

The NSE Nifty climbed 733.20 points or 3.25 per cent to finish at 23,263.90 on Monday. It closed at 22530 points on Friday. After opening at a record 22967 points on 24 May, it had witnessed a downward trend while closing on 22957 points on 24 May, 22932 points on 27 May, 22888 points on 28 May, 22704 points on 29 May and 22488 points on 30 May, last Thursday.

However this trend was broken on Monday with the swift climb buoyed by the positive sentiments among the investors in wake of the exit poll predicting more than 350 seats for the Modi government.

The NIFTY benchmark is expected to go even higher post 4 June as investors, both individuals and investors, are as per market experts, banking on the return of the Modi government which will ensure continuity of economic policies that will not be dependent on the desires of local and regional elements which would be the case if the INDIA bloc comes to power.

An analysis of the past ten years data by the Daily Guardian from 1 May 2014 when it was clear that the Modi government was going to replace the Congress led United Progressive Alliance ten years rule at the center, the market has been on an upward climb, a trend that is unmatched among the global order.

This trend continued even during the covid 19 even as all other economies were tanking.
An analysis of the ten years old market data related to NIFTY shows that the benchmark has grown a staggering almost four times in the last ten year.

The market took five years to cover the journey from 6500 points to 12000 points. In the next five years, it went up by a staggering 11000 points to cross 23000 points.
On 1 May, the NIFTY was 6700 points. It crossed the 7000 points less than two weeks later and landed at 8000 points on 2 September.

For the benchmark to cross 9000 points, it took the market almost two and a half years. On 14 March 2017, it crossed 9000 for the first time in history even as it touched the landmark 10000 points on 27 July 2017, less than five months after touching 9000 points.
On 24 January 2018, it crossed the 11000 points for the first time and touched 12000 points in June 2019, days after the Modi 2.0 government was sworn in.

Due to the covid pandemic, in 2020 the NIFTY benchmark witnessed a sudden dip but still it continued to hover around 8500-9000 points, despite the global markets witnessing a massive downward curve.

Even as the effect of covid pandemic on the economy was revealing itself, the Indian market crossed 13000 points benchmark on 24 November 2020, within months of the lock down being lifted, which was due to the confidence in the financial decisions and economic policies that Modi and the officials at PMO had taken to protect the economy from the fallout of the once in a century pandemic. Less than 100 days later, it crossed the 14000 points mark on 4 January 2021.

</excerpt>

Indian stock indices Nifty and Sensex commenced trading on Friday with minimal change, remaining close to the record highs achieved the previous day. The Nifty Index opened at 22,930 points, nearing the significant 23,000 mark, while the Sensex continued its momentum from Thursday, starting near 75,335, close to the 75,500 level.

Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert, commented on the substantial net inflow of Rs 4670 crores by FIIs on Thursday, highlighting the importance of monitoring FII activity leading up to the market close on May 31st, the last trading day before the June 1st Exit Polls. Bagga anticipates a moderately positive market amidst diminishing election uncertainties.

Both indices achieved historic highs on Thursday, with the Nifty 50 surpassing the 22,900 mark. The Sensex climbed by 1,196.98 points to 75,418.04, while the Nifty 50 rose by 369.85 points to 22,967.65.

Shrikant Chauhan, Head of equity research at Kotak Securities, pointed out a bullish signal on the daily chart indicating a potential market breakout, with key support levels projected at 22,800/75,000. Chauhan suggested a buying strategy for select stocks within the range of 22,800 to 22,850 levels.

In broader market trends, major indices such as Nifty Next 50, Nifty 100, Nifty Midcap, and Nifty Smallcap began Friday’s session with gains. Among sectoral indices, Nifty Bank and Nifty Financial Services followed the upward trend, while Nifty Auto, Nifty FMCG, and Nifty IT experienced slight declines in the opening session.

In Asian markets, selling pressure persisted, with Japan’s Nikkei index declining by over 1.17 percent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropping by 1.28 percent, and Taiwan’s Weighted Index losing 64 points to reach 21,543. Similarly, China’s Shanghai Composite Index fell to 3,110.09.

In commodity markets, gold prices decreased to 71,500 rupees, marking a decline of over 2,000 rupees in three days following the US Fed’s announcement of policy meeting minutes, which indicated no recent rate cuts.

</excerpt>

Indian benchmark indices began Friday’s trading session on a subdued note influenced by global trends. The Nifty 50 index dropped by 29 points to 22,374.20 in early trade, while the BSE Sensex fell by 149 points to 73,548 at the time of this report.

“On Friday, the global handover is soft, while the domestic impulse is bullish. Given that India has underperformed due to domestic issues, the ECI data could lead to FOMO buying in Indian equities. We remain cautious heading into the June 4th election results announcement. Voter turnout has no predictive power in indicating election results. However, market sentiments are being impacted by this number, so we can expect some continued upward movement,” said Ajay Bagga, a banking and market expert.

He further added, “The FII selling intensity moderated on Thursday, and as FIIs come to liquidate their large short positions in the derivatives markets, Indian markets will experience an upsurge.”

In the Nifty 50 Index, Mahindra & Mahindra emerged as the top gainer of the day, with shares surging more than 6 percent following the announcement of the company’s financial results. Tata Motors, Grasim, and BPCL also featured among the top gainers, each rising by more than 1 percent.

The top losers of the day included SBILIFE, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma, Adani Ports, and IndusInd Bank. In market statistics, a total of 2,166 stocks opened for trading on Friday in NSE, with 1,450 trading in advance, 633 in decline, and 83 remaining unchanged.

The commodity market saw gains, with WTI crude on track for a third consecutive day of increases and gold slightly higher. Bitcoin traded above USD 65,000 after stabilizing from a previous decline.

In the US market on Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average crossed the 40,000 level for the first time, with experts attributing the recent rally to hopes of rate cuts from the Fed in the coming months. The Dow peaked at 40,051.05 during the trading session and closed at 39,869.38.

Earlier in April, the index attempted to cross the 40,000 mark but closed near it following a market pullback due to concerns about high-interest rates. The Dow Jones first crossed the 30,000 mark in November 2020.

After the CPI inflation data revealed a decrease in inflation, the stock markets concluded Tuesday’s session with gains. The NSE Nifty 50 finished trading with a 0.51 percent increase at 22,217.85, while the BSE Sensex closed 0.45 percent higher at 73,104.61.

Ajay Bagga, a Banking and Market Expert, commented on the day’s market movement, stating, “There was a slight uptick in the Indian stock markets today. The immediate trigger was the India CPI print for April indicating a decline on a month-on-month basis. This provided some assurance to the markets. As the rally persisted, the question arises: was it a rebound from oversold levels, or a resurgence of confidence following Phase 4 polling of the 2024 Election process?”

Bagga further remarked, “We maintain a cautious stance and remain on the sidelines for now. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have offloaded Rs 29,000 crore worth of Indian stocks until May 13th, and this trend will only change with certainty surrounding the June 4th result announcement.”

Adani Enterprises, M&M, Hero MotoCorp, L&T, and JSW Steel were among the top performers in the Nifty 50, while Cipla, TCS, Nestle India, Tata Consumer Products, and Axis Bank experienced notable declines.

In the broader market, the BSE SmallCap index surged by 1.84 percent, and the BSE MidCap index saw a rise of 1.14 percent. Sectors like FMCG, Pharma, and Healthcare recorded slight downturns, whereas Metal, Auto, PSU Bank, and Oil & Gas sectors led the gains.

Global markets remained stable on Tuesday, with MSCI’s world share index hovering near its mid-March all-time high.

“Investors are anticipating key U.S. inflation data, particularly the producer price index scheduled for release at 1230 GMT, ahead of Wednesday’s consumer inflation data. Expectations are for core CPI to ease from 3.8% to 3.6% for April. Investors are closely monitoring whether recent inflationary surprises will persist, potentially impacting the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions,” stated Varun Agarwal, MD of Profit Idea.

In Asian markets, the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong continued its upward trend, rising 30 percent from January’s lows, supported by inflows of mainland capital and China’s issuance of one trillion yuan in special bonds. Japanese government bond yields climbed to 0.96 percent, the highest level since November, following the central bank’s unexpected reduction in bond purchases.

This uptrend was primarily driven by fresh buying following the recent dip. At 9:19 am, shortly after the opening bell, the Sensex stood at 72,979.48 points, marking a gain of 203.34 points or 0.28 percent, while the Nifty reached 22,177.15 points, up by 73.10 points or 0.33 percent. At the time of reporting, all sectoral indices, except for the Nifty pharma and Nifty healthcare index, were trading in positive territory.

Over the past week, indices experienced consistent declines. Analysts attributed this to a strong US dollar, uncertainty surrounding the Lok Sabha election outcomes due to a decreasing voter turnout trend in the completed phases, and profit booking following a recent rally. Additionally, continued selling by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and lower-than-expected earnings from some major corporations also dampened investor sentiment.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have recently turned net sellers in Indian stocks. After remaining net buyers for three consecutive months until mid-April, FPIs have cumulatively sold stocks worth Rs 8,671 crore during April, according to National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). So far in May, they have sold stocks worth Rs 18,375 crore.

“Given the current conditions, the best strategy for investors is to wait and watch for a trend change, which could occur at any time. Clarity on election trends is expected before June 4th, the counting day, and the market response could be significant. Buying on dips would be a prudent approach now,” said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.With annual retail inflation easing slightly in April, the focus now shifts to wholesale inflation figures, which are due later today.
