Japan’s Agriculture Minister, Taku Etō, has stepped down following public outrage over his controversial comment that he never purchases rice because he receives it as a gift. His resignation has intensified the pressure on Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, whose government is already grappling with rising living costs and discontent ahead of the crucial upper house elections in July.

“Just now I submitted my resignation to Prime Minister Ishiba,” Etō announced outside the PM’s office.

Etō’s remarks, made at a recent fundraiser, triggered widespread criticism at a time when rice prices have nearly doubled. “I’ve never bought rice myself because my supporters donate so much to me that I can practically sell it,” he said. Earlier, he had expressed sympathy with consumers struggling under the price hike, noting the government’s release of 300,000 tons of rice from emergency reserves to curb prices.

His statement sparked fury across Japan, where rice has become a symbol of the larger cost-of-living crisis. Data from April shows a 5kg bag of rice now costs a record ¥4,268 ($29), up from ¥4,214 the week before, and nearly double the price from a year ago. The crisis stems from multiple factors, including a poor harvest due to extreme heat in 2023, hoarding by distributors, and panic buying following a “megaquake” warning in 2024.

Etō acknowledged his misstep: “I asked myself whether it is appropriate for me to stay at the helm [of the agriculture ministry] at a critical time for rice prices, and I concluded that it is not,” he told Kyodo news agency. “Once again, I apologise to people for making extremely inappropriate comments as minister when they are struggling with surging rice prices.”

He also admitted his wife had scolded him for the remarks, saying, “She told me that she does buy rice when the donated rice runs out. It’s not like our family is living entirely off of rice given to us as gifts.”

Opposition and Public Discontent

Junya Ogawa, secretary general of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party, slammed the remarks as “extremely inappropriate, out of touch and intolerable.”

Prime Minister Ishiba, already facing declining popularity due to the ongoing economic crunch, had earlier apologised for Etō’s comments. In a Kyodo survey, 87% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the rice price crisis. The cabinet’s approval ratings have now hit their lowest since Ishiba took office last October.

Shinjirō Koizumi, a former environment minister and previous contender for LDP leadership, has been appointed as Etō’s successor.

In an unprecedented move last month, Japan also imported rice from South Korea for the first time in 25 years to address the domestic shortfall and growing consumer frustration.

With the United States, India, Japan, and Australia forming the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD), the meeting serves as a strategic platform to address global challenges, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
</excerpt>

PAVING THE WAY FOR A STRATEGIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL FUTURE

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States for the QUAD summit marks a major diplomatic milestone as India prepares to host the 2025 edition of the event. With the United States, India, Japan, and Australia forming the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD), the meeting serves as a strategic platform to address global challenges, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. As tensions with China rise, the focus on strengthening partnerships, enhancing security, and fostering technological cooperation is more critical than ever.

What is the QUAD?
The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, better known as the QUAD, is a strategic forum designed to promote peace, security, and economic prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Consisting of the US, India, Japan, and Australia, the QUAD has taken on new importance as these nations collaborate to counter growing Chinese assertiveness, particularly in the South China Sea.

Biden’s Legacy in Institutionalizing the QUAD
President Joe Biden’s role in institutionalizing the QUAD has been a hallmark of his foreign policy agenda. This summit could be seen as one of his final moves to solidify the QUAD as a permanent feature of global diplomacy. With both Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida likely attending their last QUAD summits, the meeting serves as a key opportunity for both leaders to showcase their commitment to this strategic alliance.
As India is set to host the 2025 summit, Modi’s leadership in the coming years will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of this multilateral forum.
Strengthening the US-India Strategic Partnership
India and the United States have steadily deepened their strategic ties, with this QUAD summit providing an opportunity to enhance cooperation in key areas such as defense, technology, and trade. The bilateral talks between Modi and Biden are expected to focus on furthering this strategic partnership, which is essential for countering common challenges like security threats and technological dependencies.
In addition to defense cooperation, the discussions will center on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, semiconductors, and biotechnology. These sectors are not only crucial for economic growth but also hold the potential to transform industries, create jobs, and position both nations as leaders in innovation.

Semiconductors: A Critical Focus
The global shortage of semiconductors has highlighted the urgency of building resilient supply chains, and India’s role in this ecosystem is becoming increasingly important. With PM Modi expected to meet with US-based tech CEOs during his visit, discussions around semiconductor manufacturing will likely take center stage.
By strengthening its semiconductor industry, India can reduce dependency on global supply chains and ensure its leadership in sectors such as electronics, defense, and telecommunications. This collaboration is essential for employment generation and aligning with Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India.

Medical Equipment: Ensuring Health Security
As the world continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of advanced medical equipment remains a priority. Collaborations between India and the US in the field of medical technology will lead to breakthroughs that can improve healthcare infrastructure, especially in rural areas. This focus on health security will not only save lives but also position India as a global leader in manufacturing medical equipment for both domestic use and export.

Quantum Technology: Shaping the Future Economy
One of the most transformative technologies that will be discussed at the summit is quantum computing. Quantum technology has the potential to revolutionize industries by solving complex problems that traditional computing systems cannot address. Its impact will be felt across all major sectors—from healthcare and finance to defense and energy.
Quantum computing will allow for faster drug discovery in healthcare, optimize supply chains in manufacturing, enhance cybersecurity with quantum encryption, and accelerate scientific research. For India, investing in quantum technology is essential to positioning itself as a global hub for cutting-edge research and innovation. Partnerships with the US, Japan, and Australia in this field could lead to groundbreaking developments that benefit not only these nations but the global economy as a whole.

Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow
The theme of the 2023 QUAD summit, “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” underscores the importance of collaborative approaches to address global challenges. From security concerns in the Indo-Pacific to technological cooperation, the QUAD nations are working together to ensure a stable, rules-based international order.
Amid growing Chinese belligerence in the South China Sea, the QUAD’s commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific is vital. Interestingly, China has recently shifted its rhetoric, claiming that “China and India are not against each other.” However, India remains cautious, especially in light of unresolved border disputes such as the Galwan clash. While China may speak of mutual cooperation, India will likely maintain its firm stance on national security and sovereignty.

Global Diplomacy: Modi’s Role in Peace Talks
PM Modi’s role in global diplomacy extends beyond the QUAD summit. His unique position as a leader who maintains positive relations with major global powers allows him to contribute to ongoing peace efforts, such as those concerning the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza conflict. Although peace cannot be achieved overnight, Modi’s efforts at fostering dialogue and diplomacy will be closely watched.

Addressing the Indian Diaspora: A Diplomatic Highlight
One of the most anticipated aspects of Modi’s visit is his address to the Indian diaspora in the US. Over 24,000 members have signed up to attend the event at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Indian diaspora, a vibrant and influential community, plays a crucial role in strengthening ties between the US and India. Modi’s outreach to this community will be a key moment of the visit, further solidifying the bond between the two nations.

Trade, Employment, and Youth Empowerment
Modi’s meetings with CEOs of leading US companies will explore opportunities for enhancing trade relations, youth empowerment, and employment generation. From AI and biotech to semiconductors, these industries are essential for both economic growth and technological advancement in India.

Eyes on Modi: Global Peace and Indo-Pacific Stability
As Modi takes the stage at the QUAD summit, the world will be looking to India’s role in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Will India take a firmer stance on issues like China’s aggressiveness, or offer solutions for long-standing conflicts such as those in Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Gaza? Additionally, Modi’s potential meetings with former US President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris will be watched closely, as they could influence future diplomatic relations.

Setting the Agenda for the Future
PM Modi’s visit to the QUAD summit is a critical moment for India’s global strategy. From advancing technological innovations in semiconductors and quantum computing to deepening defense and economic partnerships, India’s role as a global leader is becoming more pronounced. As India prepares to host the 2025 QUAD summit, this visit will set the stage for the country’s continued rise on the global stage, cementing its role in shaping the future of diplomacy, security, and technology in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
</excerpt>

Friday has a special meaning in my life . It was a day of new film release and takes me back to Allahabad where I spent my youth. How single Cinema theatre was my Mecca! Regular rounds of Cinema halls was part of routine. If not to see a movie, to see and admire posters of the running and to be released films. ‘Matinee show’ was sought, unlike today when weekend cinema is the norm. Specially during college days, as the show matched with college timings. All of us who skipped college classes for ‘Matinee Show’ are doing well in life! There are many moments of the past which make me happy. Strangely, incidents in modest and simple surroundings/circumstances have given me more happiness than even travelling to foreign lands. Among many such adolescent/childhood memories are the moments watching those countless films in Allahabad.

The ticket sales would commence a week prior to the new release and I would make it a point to be an hour early for the window to open ; well! I was not the only one! Only two tickets per person were permitted . Much pushing, jostling and climbing on the front person’s shoulder would ensue while waiting for the ticket sale to commence . Sometimes ; when one would be near to the closed window the sound of the stamping on the ticket book by the booking clerk would kindle a unique joy and expectations . The clerk would stamp the date and show timing on the tickets . This ticket book consisted of leaves very thin and fragile like the petals of bougainvillea flowers- pink, blue, green and yellow. On obtaining the tickets one would verify the details on it for correctness and then neatly secure them in the purse or the top pocket and on reaching home hide them inside a text book as a prized possession.

We had priorities clear from early days .We watched ‘Matinee Show’ to watch our ‘Matinee Idols’. First Day first Show was an achievement we boasted of. Money was scarce and lower stall was therefore preferred. Some money was always saved for Samosas during interval; which was must. As the interval approached the smell of freshly ‘deep fried’ samosas in ‘Dalda Vanaspati’ was awaited expectantly. After the show there was no rush to walk out but we leisured out of cinema hall much after the screen was darkened ( those days titles/credits appeared in the beginning and this western trend of titles rolling out at end had not commenced). Outside we looked out for the vendors selling song lyrics along with peanuts. The lyrics had to be obtained and songs memorized . I remember many songs and still when they appear on TV I can sing them along, though I do not remember syllabus of the many subjects I studied in college and school. Such was our devotion and passion! The story of the film with action and dialogues was narrated to our neighbours who had missed the fun. It was considered normal to fall in love with the heroine for a certain period and many days and nights were consumed thinking of her. Minute details were noted-colour of her sari, the jewellery she wore, the cut of her salwar kameez , her haircut etc. Soon after the first Matinee show the verdict on the film was announced . Hit or Flop? This has indeed been the norm and famous Directors such as Subhash Ghai among others have stated that fate of a film was decided by the audience during ‘First day First Show’. There was no hurry to return home , after pulling out our cycles from the stand the film was discussed threadbare with heated arguments to drive home our views and to defend the performance of our –‘Matinee Idol’.

The craze was such that when we visited other towns and cities the first preferred location hunt was cinema halls and the movies playing. I visited my friend in Kanpur and the next morning I skipped an important marriage ceremony of his sister and saw ‘Nau do Gyaraha’ ( Dev starrer) at the local theatre. During my job interview at Bangalore where luckily I spent many days the fullness of Cinema scene in that great city , in the late seventies was explored with a missionary zeal. I may not remember many historical places in important cities but I still remember the cinema halls there ( I am a history student !)

Now that the era and its magic is past , there is tremendous lament. Cinema is now captured and arrested in mobile sets ; from 35 MM screen to the hand held mobile screen ; Oh ! What a fall! Entertainment is acquired effortlessly with least investment of emotion. No one suffers the loss of failure to obtain opening show tickets; how it haunted one for days! The finest Art creation of 20th Century shall be victim of IT revolution to such an extent one could not fathom.

Looking for some saviour, I cannot see this charming beauty to fade in such a manner! Those days the popular culture was not hit by the Television invasion and the citizens were not caged in their drawing rooms. . Many cinema Halls screened old films at ‘reduced rates’, because the new releases could not keep pace with the number of Cinema Halls, and therefore the ‘rerun’ of old films were a norm. More so, as the cost of print at that time was very high ,even new releases were screened in only one Cinema Hall, and very rare we would witness a release in two Halls- ‘Sholay’ and ‘Bobby’, were exceptions . The reruns gave us a chance to see the Cinema of the yesteryears and appreciate the Art of Dilip Kumar, Balraj Sahni etc. They were still in reckoning but the best years were behind them. They belonged to the generation of my father, but still we liked them as the world was moving slow then and the gulf between the generations was tolerable..

The film ‘Daag’ ( 1954, Dilip Kumar-Nimmi starrer) had an intense impact on me when I saw it in the late sixties/early seventies. I may have been 12-13 old then and had by then bitten by the movie bug. My parents too never restricted my love for the movies and the entire family on occasions witnessed the new releases by booking tickets in advance. It was always a big family outing and often an award at the end of the Annual examination or receipt of results. We three brothers would dress well, make our hair in style of the Hero we were worshipping at that point in time, make gestures copying the Hero on the poster, utter some famous dialogues from the film or recite songs made famous by then; this used to be our ritual prior to witnessing the film.

However at the beginning of my cinematic affair the avenues and opportunities were few owing to my age as I had yet not embarked on college life and therefore my solitary movements were marked to the borders of my colony; Ashok Nagar .Hence, I looked for alternate cinematic experience and my friend’s residence was one such place. His father too was fond of cinema so much so that he would regularly see a movie in the evening after the end of his walk and return home on rickshaw; he was an eminent professor in the University. He was member of the ‘Chalchitra vibhag’ and could loan films for private screenings. We brothers therefore saw many good films at my friend’s place on his 16mm projector- ‘Kanoon’, ‘Bahu-Rani’, ‘Kundan’ are some of the films I still recall. Films were also shown to us at our school- St Joseph’s College; ‘Kohra’ was one suspense film which terrified us to the extent that we students had made a cluster in the middle of the hall and our chairs were all hugging each other ;it was a sight at the end of the show!

Returning to ‘Daag’, it remains in my memory as the earliest film I saw for free , on the Annual Day celebrations of the ‘Valmiki School’ which was just opposite the ‘Chakbandi’ office at the beginning of the Ashok Nagar crossing. ‘Valmiki School’ as my memory goes was a municipal school with rudimentary structure , classrooms with tin roof in straight lines on three sides. A big tamarind tree provided shade to a large grassless ground in the centre. As it grew dark we were on the ground swatting on a mat which was partly provided and covered some portion of the ground. Soon the ground was filled with people , they were standing along the wired boundary wall, on the roof top, on the adjoining trees.

The film began and I was transferred to another world. Even in that young age I could fathom the greatness of the thespian . Dilip got his first Filmfare award for acting for ‘Daag’ . It was a simple story of Dilip Kumar whose weakness was drinking, despite his girlfriend’s and mother’s ( Nimmi and Lalita Pawar) advise and remonstrations he was unable to quit this habit , however one day he quits drinking and decides to leave his village for a job in town, on his return one day he finds his mother was dead, he takes to drinking again and dies in the end. However what has remained with me forever ‘etched’ is the song – ‘Aye mere dil kahin aur chal, gham ki duniyan de dil bhar gaya, dhoondh ley ab koi ghar naya’ Sung by Talat Mahmood, composed by Shankar Jaikishan and penned by Shailendra, this song is soul stirring and appears in the film on many occasions. The long shot of Dilip returning triumphantly to his village suitcase in hand and the song on his lips still haunts me. The strong and yet melodious sound of the ‘Piano-accordion’ is the core of that song.

Even now, whenever I hear the song the sound takes me to those happy moments. Moments of freedom, imagination, creativity.

</excerpt>

The present regime’s introduction of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) in August 2024 has generated a mix of praise and criticism. As a hybrid between the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) and the New Pension Scheme (NPS), the UPS attempts to balance the demands for guaranteed pensions while addressing the fiscal concerns raised by the ever-growing pension liabilities. However, the scheme’s underlying implications raise several critical questions regarding its long-term sustainability and potential financial burden on future generations.

A Middle Path Between Two Extremes?
The UPS provides government employees with an assured, inflation-adjusted pension at 50% of their last-drawn basic pay, along with other features like periodic dearness relief hikes and a minimum pension of ₹10,000 per month. This scheme, which will be offered as an additional option under the NPS framework, requires employees to contribute 10% of their basic salary while the government increases its share to 18.5%. With 23 lakh central government employees expected to benefit from UPS, the scheme is set to be implemented from April 2025.
The UPS seems to be a smart compromise compared to the older schemes. On one hand, it addresses the demand for pension guarantees that were a hallmark of the OPS. On the other hand, it retains a contributory model, preventing the government from bearing the entire burden as was the case under the OPS. The scheme’s design, guided by actuarial models, suggests that the government has accounted for demographic factors, inflation, and expected returns while determining its financial outlay. The initial projection of an additional annual outgo of Rs 6,250 crore and arrears of Rs 800 crore, though significant, appears manageable at first glance.

The Return of Fiscal Risks
However, critics argue that the UPS may be a slippery slope back to the fiscal irresponsibility that characterized the OPS era. The OPS was notorious for its pay-as-you-go model, which left pension liabilities entirely in the hands of the government, ultimately funded by taxpayers. It was this unsustainable model that prompted the shift to the NPS in 2004, which linked pensions to market returns and involved both employees and the government making contributions.
The UPS, while designed to balance contributions, still reintroduces elements of guaranteed pensions that could strain public finances in the long run. The government’s contribution of 18.5% is based on assumptions related to workforce size, life expectancy, and inflation rates. Any significant deviation from these assumptions could inflate the fiscal burden, especially when the scheme is extended to state governments, potentially covering 90 lakh employees. States already grappling with high debt levels may find it challenging to sustain this additional liability.

Impact on Broader Fiscal Discipline
The broader concern is the precedent the UPS sets. By offering guaranteed pensions, the scheme may encourage states and other entities to abandon fiscally prudent approaches in favor of populist measures. Several opposition parties, when in power in states like Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, have already reverted to the OPS, highlighting how political pressures can outweigh fiscal rationality.
The Rs 5.22 lakh crore allocated for pensions by states in 2023-24, representing 6%-21% of their revenue receipts, underscores the existing strain on public finances. The UPS could exacerbate these pressures if other states follow suit.
Moreover, while the scheme is targeted at government employees, who make up only 2% of India’s workforce, it is ultimately the broader taxpayer base that bears the cost. Critics argue that social security measures should be aimed at a wider segment of society, particularly the unorganized sector, which lacks adequate pension coverage. By prioritizing a relatively small and organized group, the UPS may be seen as catering more to political interests than addressing systemic issues of social security.

The Politics behind the Policy
The rollout of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) just before key elections in Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand suggests it may be politically driven rather than a genuine reform. By focusing on government employees, a crucial voter base, the scheme seems aimed at securing electoral support. Critics note the irony of the BJP, which once backed the market-oriented National Pension Scheme (NPS) in 2004, now shifting towards aspects of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Opposition leaders argue that this shift prioritizes electoral gains over fiscal prudence, as state pension liabilities are already over Rs 5.22 lakh crore. Expanding UPS could burden public finances further, and concerns remain that it may divert more public funds into capital markets, benefiting fund managers more than employees. Ultimately, the UPS risks being perceived as a politically motivated rollback rather than a thoughtful policy reform.

A Prudent Move or a Policy Misstep?
The Unified Pension Scheme is undeniably a well-calibrated attempt to bridge the gap between fiscal prudence and political reality. Yet, the very elements that make it appealing — guaranteed pensions, inflation adjustments, and a higher government contribution — also introduce the risk of long-term financial instability. While the UPS may offer a short-term political advantage and satisfy a vocal constituency of government employees, its long-term sustainability remains uncertain.
The Unified Pension Scheme aims to strike a balance between guaranteed pensions and fiscal prudence, but it risks returning to unsustainable practices of the past. Its long-term impact on public finances remains uncertain, raising questions about whether this move represents genuine reform.

</excerpt>

The Leader of opposition, Rahul Gandhi visited America last week, engaged with people at Georgetown University and the University of Texas. He expressed and deliberated the idea of India with the students and faculties. According to him India is under siege of a particular ideological bandwagon which is stirred by RSS. There is no doubt that the role of opposition leader in Lok Sabha is very vital in creating an image of India in abroad. In fact, the factors of foreign policy is also shaped by different bodies and personalities, the leader of opposition is one of them. Therefore, each word spoken in the foreign land matters a lot.

This is disputable why did Rahul Gandhi choose America as his first visit. It might be his personal choice or political compulsion. He might be knowing it better. But the larger question is the anti-India sentiments. The American think tanks have been saying the same which was being expressed by Rahul Gandhi. Rahul met the senator Ilhan Omar, the controversial legislator from Minnesota who has taken a staunchly critical position of the Indian government and been a sympathizer of Pakistan’s. Is it merely coincident or willful attempt to reach out to anti-India lobby in America? British Prime Minister Churchill called India in 1947 ‘rascals, rouges and freebooters’ according to him India is not a country, it is divided into caste and fragmented into religions, very soon it would get demolished like house of sands. America thought on the same line. But India survived and regained more cohesiveness in terms of a country, better understood as a ‘Rashtra’ The federal structure became healthier despite being a few challenges, female conditions improved speedily and social status of Dalits are much better.

Then question which was raised by Rahul Gandhi ‘the idea of India’ is generated by American think tanks and propagated by certain political leaders of India. Let’s revisit what did he say and how did it unfold? The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha was addressing a gathering of several hundred Indian Americans in Herndon, a Virginia suburb of Washington DC. “First of all, you have to understand what the fight is about. The fight is not about politics. That is superficial,” “The fight is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban in India or not. Or he, as a Sikh, is going to be able to go to Gurdwara.

That’s what the fight is about. And not just for him, for all religions,” said Rahul. After conflating communal divide, he jumped to challenge the federal spirit of India. Criticizing the RSS for their policies and vision of India, he said, “What the RSS is basically saying is that certain states are inferior to other states. Certain languages are inferior to other languages. Certain religions are inferior to other religions. Certain communities are inferior to other communities. This is what the fight is about.” “…that is the ideology of the RSS. Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Manipuri. These are all inferior languages.”

After understanding the context of Rahul Gandhi’s statements and direct linkages of American think tanks in creating anti-India hate wave. There are numerous examples of creating a narrative against India and then implanting it accordingly. Take the example caste conflicts in India. Caste factor was very conveniently connected with race. The Dalits of India was put in the category blacks of Africa. How was it done? There was a mega project sanctioned by the government of America, facilitated by a think tank. The scholars were identified from India and very easily narratives was constructed and placed in syllabi of India universities. Thousands of PhD research were completed in Indian academia on the name of identity politics by showcasing India is not a cohesive nation-state, it pulled apart by different identities. The critical race theory or post-modernist approach prove time and again. The Oxfam reports or reports generated by different international organizations which have wide acceptability and credibility across the world, do the shabby jobs by targeting certain country. India has been always their prime target. The people who undertake the projects and mandates which are being designed are highly biased.

Indian knowledge system is nothing but a black magic or sheer superstitious stories according to American think tanks.. The scores of fellowships are yearly awarded to selected Indian scholars over period of time, create a strong team for American narratives. The selected items like, secularism, federalism, women empowerment, Dalit card and Kashmir issues are the most important charitable ones. They beautifully package with silver coating by bringing human right and democracy. The American credibility of democracy is on display. The world is watching it very carefully.

It should be properly understood that hate India became more focused since the BJP government under Modi came to power. The idea of India changed. Now India stirred to regain its age old status as a Vishw Guru. The American Think Tanks tools were dismantled or prohibited to proliferate into Indian Education System. The Indic perspectives of knowledge were given larger space. This change of mind challenged the American hegemony.

American scholars are very smart. They believe in empirical research. If the particular issue is raised by the people where they belong to, then it becomes the truth is coming out from horses’ mouth. Who could be a better person than the leader of opposition? That is how Rahul Gandhi’s intellectual stimulations come from American think tanks. He targets RSS.

His understanding of ‘Idea of India’ has completely blurred. According to him Hindu terror groups are more dangerous than LeT, Lashkare-eTaiba. There is a solid proof. In controversial comments, Rahul Gandhi has told US ambassador to India Timothy Roemer that growth of “radicalized Hindu groups” posed a bigger threat to the country than militant groups like LeT, according to a leaked American diplomatic cable in 2009. Rahul, during a conversation with the envoy at a luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his residence in July 2009 in honour of visiting secretary of state Hillary Clinton, also referred to the tensions created by some of the more polarizing figures in the BJP such as Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, the cable said. “ Responding to the ambassador’s query about Lashkar-e-Tayyaba’s activities in the region and immediate threat to India, Mr Gandhi said there was evidence of some support for the group among certain elements in India’s indigenous Muslim community,” the cable notes. “However, Gandhi warned, the bigger threat may be the growth of radicalized Hindu groups, which create religious tensions and political confrontations with the Muslim community,”

Had Hindus been radical and fundamentalists, half of the world would have been Hindu nations. But it is not. Hinduism itself is plural. It nurtures diversity and accommodates everyone. Therefore, the leader of opposition must think twice before painting negative pictures of India. The political tussles and jockeying look interesting within the boundaries of Indian parliament, when it crosses the boundaries the same tone and textures sound toxic.

</excerpt>

The Congress and its allies have taken a serious note of threats issued to Rahul Gandhi, the leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and have urged the Prime Minister to rein in his partymen who were making irresponsible but alarming statements. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has also written a letter to the PM, drawing his attention to the utterances of several leaders from the NDA. Party treasurer Ajay Maken filed a complaint with the Tughlak Road police station earlier in the week, naming three BJP leaders, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Raghuraj Singh and Shiv Sena activist Sanjay Gaikwad. Rajya Sabha MP Anil Bonde while reacting to Rahul’s demand for a caste census, also stated that his tongue should be “burned’’. BJP leaders, who have opposed the stand taken on multiple issues by Rahul Gandhi, have also termed him as a terrorist, something which has not gone down well with most people in the political circles. Till a couple of years ago, the BJP had tried to ridicule Rahul by calling him a “Pappu’’ but after he has bounced back and taken the Saffron Brigade upfront, this description has been virtually withdrawn. In fact, Congressmen say that it was the BJP leadership which by making false promises, was making a “Pappu’’ out of the people.

While it is for the Intelligence agencies to assess, the level of threat to the LoP, who enjoys a “Z’’ plus security cover, there is a growing feeling within the Congress that he should be provided enhanced security by the Special Protection Group (SPG), which guards the Prime Minister. The SPG is an elite force drawn from various para-military organizations as well as the Defense Forces, and is solely responsible for the security of the Prime Minister. Till November, 2019, the SPG was also taking care of the security requirements of the Gandhis, who have in the past lost two members of their family to terrorist activity. While Indira Gandhi was gunned down by her own security guards on October 31, 1984, her son, Rajiv was targeted and assassinated by a suicide bomber in Sriperumbudur, on May 21, 1991.

There are many in the security establishment who believe that had Rajiv, at the time of his death been guarded by the SPG, he may have lived. Indira Gandhi was killed since she did not pay heed to advice from her own security personnel, and did not allow the Sikh bodyguards to be withdrawn from her Security detail. The SPG was formed shortly after Rajiv took over as the PM and is now a force with over 3000 highly trained personnel. An amendment in the SPG Act was subsequently made to also extend the cover to the families of the former Prime Ministers. This arrangement was reviewed gradually in 2019 and to begin with the SPG cover was replaced with “Z’’ plus security for both former PMs, HD Deva Gowda and Dr Manmohan Singh.

It was evident that the Centre would in due course withdraw the SPG from the Gandhis as well, a matter that was broken by the Sunday Guardian in a report. Realizing that there could be opposition to the move if the SPG was taken away from the Gandhis, the Home Ministry prepared a detailed justification citing numerous illustrations of how Rahul Gandhi, had infringed the SPG norms, and gone by his own whims and fancies. The unwritten code which is prevalent in any security set up is that the Protectee, cannot have his way, and has to go by the advice of those who protect him. This is a matter which came up for discussion in the security circles when Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was stranded on a bridge near Ferozepur on January 5, last year during the peak of the Punjab election campaign.

While action against Punjab police personnel and its officers was initiated, the SPG’s role was never brought to fore during the inquiry unless, it was kept confidential and action was taken against those who had erred. It was an extremely alarming situation that the SPG had permitted the PM to undertake a road journey through hostile terrain with the farmers protest in progress and without ensuring that there were safe houses on the way. The entire incident was in complete violation of the stipulations laid down by the blue book and the SPG code. Coming back to Rahul, he should have adhered to the counsel of the SPG, and ensured that he did not violate the provisions. Those close to him were of the view that he was given the security cover to enable the Centre to keep a watch on his movements.

During PV Narasimha Rao’s tenure, the SPG personnel deployed at Ten Janpath with Sonia Gandhi, were mostly those who belonged to the Intelligence Bureau and kept a close watch on who came to meet her. This was an accepted part of their job profile. Not many people are aware that after Rajiv’s assassination, Sonia had hired private security personnel to guard her for some time.

The government is conscious that the Gandhis continue to be subjects of attention from all types of people and thus need to be protected. Describing Rahul as a terrorist is something which is difficult to understand. In this context, it needs to be pointed out that in 2006, during his maiden speech at the Congress Plenary in Hyderabad, Rahul had affirmed that his allegiance was to the National Flag, which was also the symbol of everything he stood for. Whether the Centre provides a SPG cover to him is something which would be known soon.

One such method that has gained significant traction is synthetic identity fraud. This form of fraud involves fabricating an identity by combining real personal information with fictional details, creating a new identity that can slip through the cracks of various verification processes.
</excerpt>

The New Currency: Identity
In today’s digital age, identity has become the new currency. Trust is no longer confined to the protection of financial assets, it now extends to the safeguarding of personal identities. As more consumers conduct their lives online, financial institutions are realizing that protecting a customer’s identity is just as critical as securing their money.

Synthetic Identity Fraud
In this increasingly digitized world, fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to exploit vulnerabilities in financial systems. One such method that has gained significant traction is synthetic identity fraud. This form of fraud involves fabricating an identity by combining real personal information with fictional details, creating a new identity that can slip through the cracks of various verification processes. Unlike traditional identity theft, where a criminal steals and uses someone’s complete identity, synthetic identity fraud involves piecing together a new persona that isn’t directly tied to a real individual. This makes it harder for victims and authorities to detect the fraud, as no single person’s identity has been entirely compromised.

How Synthetic Identities Are Created
The process usually begins by obtaining a real government identity card number such as PAN, AADHAAR, driving license etc, often from someone who is unlikely to notice irregularities. This is most commonly done by stealing IDs from the elderly or individuals who are not active or they don’t frequently check their credit scores. Counterfeit or manipulated identity documents like driving licenses, voter IDs, or passports may be used to support the synthetic identity.
Once a valid identity number is obtained, criminals combine it with made-up information, such as a fake name, address and birthdate. To further build the credibility of the synthetic identity, fraudsters may apply for small loans or lines of credit using the new identity. Even if these initial applications are denied, the attempt can still result in the creation of a credit file for the synthetic identity. Over time, as the fraudster continues to apply for and use credit under the synthetic identity, they build a legitimate-looking credit history, making it easier to access larger sums of money.
In some cases, fraudsters will even use the synthetic identity to “piggyback” on someone else’s credit by becoming an authorized user on their account. This technique allows the synthetic identity to inherit the positive credit history of the original account holder, further legitimizing the fake identity.
Fraudsters typically use two main methods to create synthetic identities:
Manipulated Identity: This involves altering one or more details of a real identity. For example, someone with a poor credit history might modify their identity slightly to hide past financial issues. These types of synthetic identities can sometimes be easier to detect.
Manufactured Identity: This method involves combining real and fake information to create a completely new identity. For example, a fraudster might use a real PAN paired with a false name and date of birth to open new accounts that don’t belong to any real person.

The Dangers of Synthetic Identity Fraud
Synthetic identity fraud is especially dangerous because it’s harder to detect than traditional identity theft. In regular identity theft, a fraudster steals someone’s entire identity and uses it to commit fraud. With synthetic identity fraud, however, there’s often no specific person who becomes a victim, which might sound like a good thing at first. But without a real person to notice and report the fraud, it’s much harder for businesses to catch it early.
Here’s why that’s a problem:
Undetected Fraud: Since no consumer is monitoring the account, fraudsters can keep synthetic identities active for months or even years. During this time, they build up good credit, secure higher credit limits, and then max out the accounts before disappearing. Without anyone to report the suspicious activity, the fraud can go unnoticed for a long time.
Misclassified Losses: When the fraud is finally discovered, it’s often too late. Businesses may write off the account as bad credit, not realizing it was actually fraud. This makes it difficult for companies to spot synthetic identity fraud and assess if their security measures are working.
Tracking and measuring losses from synthetic identities is tricky. There’s often confusion within organizations about what qualifies as a synthetic identity and whether it’s a fraud or credit issue. In the end, the real victims are businesses and lenders /Financial Institutions, who end up absorbing the financial losses, sometimes on a large scale, without a clear way to identify or prevent the fraud in the first place.

Some Recent Synthetic Identity Fraud Cases
PPP Fraud Scheme: Two individuals in Florida were charged for creating approximately 700 synthetic identities using stolen Social Security numbers and fake names. They exploited these identities to defraud the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) during the COVID-19 pandemic, illegally obtaining over $3 million. This case illustrates how fraudsters can manipulate government aid programs by leveraging synthetic identities to access funds intended for legitimate businesses.
TransUnion Report on Rising Fraud: A report from TransUnion highlighted that synthetic identity fraud is the fastest-growing form of fraud in the U.S., with significant impacts on public sector agencies. The report noted that states with generous unemployment benefits, such as Washington and Nevada, were particularly targeted due to their lack of income records to verify claims. This led to improper payments and loss of access to benefits for legitimate constituents.
Federal Investigations into Synthetic Identity Rings: In various investigations conducted by federal agencies, including Homeland Security, synthetic identity fraud schemes have been uncovered involving multiple individuals working together to create fraudulent identities. These cases often involve elaborate setups where identities are registered with government agencies, allowing fraudsters to extract benefits or services without detection.

Technological Countermeasures:
Indian financial institutions are increasingly leveraging advanced technologies to tackle the growing threat of synthetic identity fraud. Some of the key measures being adopted include:
1. Biometric Authentication: Financial institutions are incorporating biometric systems, such as fingerprint or facial recognition, to verify the identity of applicants. This method adds an additional layer of security, making it harder for fraudsters to use synthetic identities.
2. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML): AI and ML algorithms are being used to detect unusual patterns in account behavior. These systems can flag suspicious activities, such as rapid credit line increases or inconsistent data, helping institutions identify potential synthetic identities before significant damage is done.
3. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Using MFA, institutions require additional verification steps, such as a one-time password (OTP) or security questions, to ensure that a person is who they claim to be. This makes it more difficult for fraudsters to access accounts using synthetic identities.
4. Aadhaar-Based Verification: The Aadhaar system, India’s biometric identification system, is widely used to verify identities in financial services. By linking accounts with Aadhaar, financial institutions can ensure that the identity belongs to a real person, reducing the chances of synthetic fraud.
5. Data Analytics: Institutions are using big data analytics to cross-reference customer information with various databases. By analyzing large sets of data, inconsistencies in identity information can be flagged, helping to detect synthetic profiles.

Way Forward
It is predicted that synthetic identity fraud will continue to evolve, necessitating constant innovation in detection and prevention techniques.The Indian cybersecurity market is expected to flourish over the following five years, driven largely by the need for advanced fraud detection solutions. The need for strong identity management systems are not just about meeting regulatory requirements, they are essential for maintaining customer trust and ensuring long-term business success.
Identity verification has thus evolved into a central pillar of modern financial security. Just as money flows through the economy, so too does personal information circulate through digital networks, making it imperative for businesses to treat identity protection with the same level of importance as financial security. Robust identity management systems allow institutions to defend against increasingly sophisticated forms of fraud, while also reassuring customers that their personal information is safe. As fraudsters continue to find new ways to exploit vulnerabilities, it’s clear that identity security has become a business imperative, not just a compliance checkbox.
In conclusion, synthetic identity fraud remains a significant and evolving threat to India’s financial sector. While progress has been made in detection and prevention, continuous innovation, collaboration between stakeholders, and investment in advanced technologies are essential to combat this menace. As India continues its digital transformation, the battle against synthetic identity fraud will remain a critical focus for regulators, financial institutions, and technology providers alike.

</excerpt>

Ideology, values and principles have their own special importance in Indian politics. This is not only necessary for the development and stability of the country, but it is also a proof of the responsibility of political parties towards the public. But, when personal attacks, baseless allegations and false propaganda start in politics, it only shows the declining level of politics. Unfortunately, the kind of politics that the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to do is unacceptable for Indian democracy.

There should be no hesitation in saying that the Prime Minister’s silence on this decline in level is encouraging the talkative class. The baseless allegations made by the BJP on senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, are indicative of this distorted mentality. The repeated allegations of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against Rahul Gandhi are also the biggest proof of their political fear. Because, Rahul ji constantly asks questions to the government in the interest of the country. He raises the voice of the village, poor, labourer and farmer. He makes the issues of women oppression a national issue. Therefore, with the protection and encouragement of the Prime Minister, everyone from the Central Government ministers to the MLAs of different states make unnecessary allegations.

Personal attacks in politics
The trend of personal attacks has increased significantly under the political policy of the BJP. The allegations leveled by BJP on Rahul ji are not only in his personal life, but are also an unsuccessful attempt to challenge his political stature. This act of distorted and opposite ideology is also carried out by senior BJP leaders. This taunt points towards personal insult and ridicule, far from discussing any ideology or policy in politics. The purpose of such words and allegations is only to tarnish the image of Rahul ji. BJP forgets every time that due to all such efforts of theirs, the image of Rahul ji as a leader of the people emerges with more strength.

Perverted mindset of BJP
The baseless allegations leveled by BJP leaders on Rahul Gandhi are a symbol of the distorted mindset of BJP. Instead of healthy debate and discussion in politics, when there is politics of allegations and counter-allegations, it only creates division and rift within the society. Such allegations are an example of the mindset of the BJP, where opponents are not respected. Opposition parties play an important role in a healthy democracy, but for the BJP, the opposition is only a target of criticism. This mentality not only insults democratic values, but also shows how the BJP is ready to go to any extent in its greed for power.

Falling level of politics
The baseless allegations on Rahul ji are also a proof of the falling level of Indian politics. Politics used to be a platform of ideology and public service, but now it has become a game in which personal attacks and abusive language are used. It is because of the false arrogance of the BJP that there is a lack of healthy debate among political parties in today’s era. Instead of discussing policies, schemes and problems of the public, personal attacks keep happening more. This situation not only shows the falling level of BJP, but also tells how BJP, which is in power from the center to running the government in many states, has left behind democratic traditions and constitutional values in its greed for power.

Diversion from public issues
The truth of today’s political era is that the allegations and personal attacks on Rahul ji are not only against an individual, but it is a way to divert attention from the real issues of the public. When political parties fail to solve the problems of the public, they try to hide their failures by blaming their opponents. BJP’s attacks on Rahul ji are also a part of this strategy. Instead of facing criticism on the policies and schemes of the government, BJP is trying to hide its failures by targeting Rahul ji. This not only ignores the issues of the people but also undermines the basic purpose of politics.

Threat to democratic values
The allegations levelled against Rahul ji and the strategy adopted by BJP are a big threat to Indian democracy. In the basic definition of democracy, it is an established fact and truth that the place and respect of the opposition is important in a healthy democracy. The opposition criticises the policies of the government and raises the voice of the people. But, when there are absolutely baseless personal attacks on the top leadership of the opposition, it weakens the dignity and seriousness of the House as well as the foundation of democracy. The allegations levelled against Rahul ji garner short-lived discussion, but weaken the faith of the people in the democratic system. This sends a message among the people that personal attacks have become more important in politics than ideology and principles.

BJP lagged behind in the ideological battle
BJP may have forgotten but the people of the country know this truth very well that the allegations levelled by BJP against Rahul ji are not just personal attacks, but are a part of the ideological battle. The ideologies of both BJP and Congress are different and this ideological conflict is at the centre of Indian politics. BJP promotes its hate-filled ideology and divisive political sentiment, while Congress advocates a secular and inclusive society. Despite losing this ideological battle time and again, BJP targets Rahul ji only because it still finds itself dwarfed in front of Congress’ ideology. It gets defeated, but still keeps fighting shamelessly.

In the court of the people, now it is the responsibility of the people
In this era of falling standards in politics and baseless allegations, the public also has an important responsibility. The public has to understand that instead of allegations and counter-allegations, BJP wants to divert attention from the real issues. The allegations made on Rahul ji are only a part of politics, but the public has to understand that these allegations are made only for political gain. The public also has to learn to differentiate between truth and lies. It also has to be seen which politicians are committed to solving their problems.
In a healthy democracy, there should be discussion on ideology, policy and problems of the public, not the game of personal attacks and allegations. The public has to be alert and see which leaders in politics are paying attention to the real issues and who are resorting to falsehood only in the greed for power. The allegations made by the BJP on Rahul ji are not only an attack on a person, but also an attack on the values of Indian democracy, politics and society. The public has to understand that this is the falling level of politics and the responsibility of improving it lies in the public.

</excerpt>

In a dreadful accident, a 23-year-old man named Akshat Garg was killed after his motorcycle was badly hit by a car driving in the wrong direction on Golf Course Road, DLF Phase II, and early Sunday morning.

The deceased died within minutes due to internal bleeding and injuries in the groin area.
The accident happened in the early morning between 5.45-6 AM. The deceased’s friend and colleague, Pradyuman Kumar, aged 22, was following him on another motorcycle from behind.

Talking to The Daily Guardian, his friend Pradyuman Kumar said that, “This horrific incident, which could only be described as murder due to the driver’s intentional wrong-side driving on a national highway, cost Akshat his life. Despite the gravity of the crime, the driver has been released on bail, with authorities deeming this fatal act a bailable offense.”

According to Gurgaon police, after crossing the Sikanderpur-Cyberhub flyover, the deceased along with Kumar (the complainant) and other bikers approached a turn when a Mahindra XUV 300 car suddenly appeared, coming from the wrong direction.
The car had a political sticker on its bonet and collided head-on with Garg’s bike.
Kumar also alleged that initially the police was not even taking the copy of his Gopro camera’s footage which had the entire recording of the accident.

Naresh Kumar, Assistant PRO Gurugram police said that the driver was arrested from the spot. “He was later identified as Kuldeep Kumar Thakur, 25, of Madhubani, Bihar. As far as his profession is concerned, he handles social media campaigns for elections and had a BJP’s sticker on the car’s bonet. There is no political connection in this case.”
On Kumar’s complaint, an FIR was registered against Thakur under several sections, including Section 116 (compensation after a motor vehicle accident), 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence).

Talking to TDG, the deceased elder brother Mayank Garg who is 24 years old said that “When we went to the Police Station, the accused was not even put behind the bars. He was sitting in a room alongside the IO. I just met him for 2 minutes and the police officials were consoling us that such accidents do occur. Surprisingly, he was given a bail on the very same day despite the fact that the accident happened on Sunday and Monday was a holiday (Eid).”

He further said that “It seemed that the police were not even ready to proceed with the case and we don’t know if there’s any political connection to it. Our family will be filing a case against Thakur (accused) for criminal negligence and for compensation. We are in a deep stress as I’ve lost my brother. We both were the bread winners for our family and we have a small sister who is just 6 years old. We have some debts on us too. Now, it’s all on me and I’ll have to take care of family on my own.”He also alleged that as far as Thakur is concerned, we have recieved some information that he is track recorder as he keeps changing his location every two three months but we have found out his native place.

</excerpt>

Several areas in south Bengal face a massive flood risk as the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) released 3 lakh cusecs of water from its Panchet and Maithon dams within seven hours on the night of September 16 amid incessant low-pressure rains.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Pursurah in Hooghly district to take stock of the situation and said it is a “man-made” flood, caused by the Centre as DVC had never released so much water earlier.

“This is a man-made flood. They planned to drown Bengal. I personally spoke to the DVC authorities. I spoke to Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand at least thrice. The last time DVC released so much water was in 2009,” Banerjee told reporters.
“It was done to drown West Bengal. The Centre doesn’t undertake dredging. If dredging is done DVC can hold more water. Why do they not release water gradually when the dam is 70% – 80% full? In a bid to save Jharkhand, they release the water to Bengal. How much deprivation we shall take?” Banerjee complained.

“Even the water level in the Adi Ganga has shot up. I have never seen so much water in Adi Ganga. DVC released a huge amount of water. People have been requested to move to flood shelters. A few people got trapped at Khanakul in Hooghly district,” she told reporters earlier.

The Chief Minister’s residence at Kalighat in south Kolkata is located on the banks of the Adi Ganga, the original channel of River Ganga passing through Kolkata.
According to data shared by DVC, around 2.5 lakh cusec water was released for around six hours on Tuesday. The last time such a huge amount of water was released was in September 2009. DVC had then released 3,03,046 cusecs from its Panchet and Maithon dams.

“We released 2.5 lakh cusecs for around six hours on Tuesday. West Bengal was informed. The flow of release was reduced to 1.2 lakh cusecs later during the day,” said a DVC official.
Mamata also asked District Magistrates to remain alert and Nabanna, the State secretariat, has instructed officials to be prepared to deal with the situation.

Two people have already died because of this flood-like situation. While one person died due to wall collapse following rain in Purba Bardhaman district, another died of electrocution in Hooghly district. In Murshidabad district, floodwaters swept away a seven-year-old girl.

</excerpt>

With only two weeks left before the curtains fall on the election campaign for the Haryana Assembly polls, the Congress is facing a surprising setback as its top stars have yet to hit the campaign trail.

Despite announcing a robust list of 40 stars campaigners, including heavyweights like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, none of the senior leaders have made an appearance in the state. As the October 5 elections inch closer, and campaign is set to conclude on October 3, the absence of the party’s central leadership has raised concerns within Congress circles.

So far, none of the national leaders from the Congress’ central leadership have arrived to address rallies or energise the party carder, worrying the contenders who are facing a tough challenge in this multi-cornered contest.

The Congress had released an extensive list of its star campaigners, including prominent names like Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. However, no official announcements have been made regarding their schedule for rallies or roadshows in Haryana. Party loyalists, eager to see a boost in momentum, are left waiting for these big names to take Centre stage. “Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will not only address rallies but will also lead roadshows to support party candidates. A detailed schedule will be released soon. This is all part of our strategy,” said a senior Congress leader on the condition of anonymity, attempting to assuage concerns about the slow start.

But with the BJP’s campaign in full throttle, the absence of Congress leaders has left many questioning whether the party is losing valuable time in the race to win voters. The ruling BJP on the other hand has wasted no time in ramping up its efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already held a rally in Kurukshetra, jumpstarting the BJP’s election campaign in the state. Modi’s presence in Haryana is set to grow stronger with three more rallies on the horizon, two in Sonipat and Hisar on September 26 and a final one in Palwal on October 2. Adding to the BJP’s aggressive campaigning, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already addressed two rallies, and the party’s national president JP Nadda is scheduled to visit Haryana on Thursday.

Union ministers Manohar Lal, Rao Inderjit Singh, Krishan Pal Gurjar, and senior BJP leader Anurag Thakur are also actively campaigning, further cementing the BJP’s dominant presence on the ground. In the absence of the heavyweights, the Congress has been relying heavily on its state leaders to spearhead the campaign.

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, along with Kumari Selja and Randeep Surjewala, have been working tirelessly to keep the party’s momentum going. However, their efforts are largely seen as insufficient to counter the BJP’s full-force offensive.

The party’s star campaigners, including wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, have also been active, particularly in Julana, where Phogat is locked in a fierce battle against the BJP and AAP candidates.
Still, their regional influence does little to compensate for the absence of Congress’ national heavyweights.

Political observers believe that the Congress is on a very strong footing in Haryana but the delay in the arrival of senior leaders in the election trail could prove costly.
While party insiders maintain that a last-minute surge led by the likes of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will provide a significant boost, the question remains whether it will be too little, too late.

</excerpt>

Promises MSP guarantee, Rs 2,000 for women, free 300 unit electricity, Rs 6000 pension to elderly, disabled and widows, caste survey, raising creamy layer limit to Rs 10 lakh
The Congress party has released its election manifesto with seven-guarantees, including promises of a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price and a caste survey, along with construction of a memorial in the memory of farmers who died during the 2020-21 farmers agitation.

Attempting to reach out to all voters, the Congress manifesto named as “Saat Vaade-Pakke Irade” (Seven Promises, Firm Intentions) was launched in the presence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Haryana Congress chief Udai Bhan, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and AICC senior observers for the Haryana polls Ashok Gehlot, Ajay Maken, and Partap Singh Bajwa.

Speaking on the occasion, Kharge outlined that the manifesto will focus on providing benefits to families, empowering women, supporting the youth, strengthening social security, and improving lives of backward classes, farmers, and the poor. “We are committed to building a grand memorial for the farmers who laid down their lives fighting against the anti-farmer laws. Alongside that, we pledge to provide jobs to the next of kin of these martyrs,” said Kharge.

Briefing about the guarantees, Congress Haryana chief Udai Bhan said that the Congress’ seven guarantees includes Rs 2000 per month to every woman above 18 years, LPG gas cylinders at Rs 500, free electricity up to 300 units on the lines of Chiranjeevi scheme, Rs 25 lakh free treatment benefit. It also promises voters Rs 6000 pension per month for widows, disabled person, and senior citizens, return of the Old Pension Scheme, two lakh government positions to be filled to tackle unemployment and to make Haryana drug-free for youth upliftment. The manifesto also promises to ensure legal MSP guarantee, immediate crop compensation, 100 yard plot and two-room houses at a cost of Rs 3.5 lakhs to poor families, and a caste survey to fair distribution of resources and jobs and raising the creamy layer limit to Rs 10 lakh from current Rs 8 lakh.

Reacting over the election manifesto, former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda says, “We have given a guarantee for the women, youth, farmers (in the Congress manifesto for Haryana Assembly elections) Congress will be coming (in the state) and BJP will go.”
On Congress manifesto, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini says, “The government which is there in the politics for the past 60 years, if they have to give guarantee for getting the vote, then do not trust those guarantee…Congress revdi batne ka kaam karti hai, but never fulfil those promises…”

Similarly, BJP National Secretary Om Prakash Dhankar Criticizes Congress’ “Saat-Waade, Pakke-Irade slogan, saying “people don’t trust Congress, which is why they’ve resorted to using the slogan ‘Seven Promises, Firm Intentions”. Dhankhar also took a jibe at Congress’ promise to provide 2 lakh jobs to the youth. “The same people who were part of the ‘Bharati Roko Gang’ are now talking about giving jobs to the youth. Jobs were given to the youth without any favoritism or bribes, but Congress created hurdles in those jobs.
That’s why the youth protested in front of Congress leaders’ homes.”

However, Congress’ senior leaders from Haryana Kumari Selja and Randeep Surjewala were not present on the occasion when the manifesto was released as former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee President Udai Bhanwere present along with the central leadership of the party. But both the leaders have shared a picture of the seven guarantees of the election manifesto on their X accounts.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP has delayed the release of the election manifesto by a day as the party’s national president will now release the Haryana Sankalap Patra on Thursday. Voting for the 90-member assembly will take place on October 5 while the counting of votes will be done on October 8.

While this might seem like the norm, our bodies were never designed to sit for extended periods. Moreover, a sedentary lifestyle is linked to a higher risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.
</excerpt>

We live in a time when hustle culture is glorified. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of tasks and deadlines, often leading to long hours spent sitting at a desk. While this might seem like the norm, our bodies were never designed to sit for extended periods. Prolonged sitting can lead to issues like back pain, tight hips, poor posture, and decreased circulation. Moreover, a sedentary lifestyle is linked to a higher risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes.

Mentally, sitting for long hours can lead to fatigue, reduced focus, and even increased stress levels. The lack of movement hinders blood flow to the brain, which can dampen creativity and productivity.

So, what’s the solution?
The answer lies in incorporating regular movement into your workday. Here are seven office-friendly walking exercises and stretches that can help you stay active, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being.

1. The desk walk
Let’s start simple. The Desk Walk is an easy way to get moving without leaving your workspace. Set a timer to remind yourself to stand up every 30-45 minutes. Once the timer goes off, stand up and walk around your desk or office for a minute or two. This small movement increases blood circulation, wakes up your muscles, and gives your mind a quick break. Bonus points if you can stretch your arms above your head while walking to relieve tension in your shoulders and upper back.

2. Calf raises on the go
Calf raises are a fantastic way to strengthen your lower legs and improve circulation, especially after sitting for long periods. Stand up straight and rise onto the balls of your feet, lifting your heels off the ground. Hold the position for a few seconds, then slowly lower your heels back down. You can do this while waiting for a document to print or during a quick chat with a colleague. Aim for 10-15 reps each time.

3. Hamstring stretch
Tight hamstrings are a common issue for office workers. To stretch them out, stand up and place one heel on a low stool or the edge of your desk. Keep your leg straight, and gently lean forward from your hips, keeping your back flat. You should feel a stretch along the back of your thigh. Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds on each leg. This stretch not only relieves tension in your hamstrings but also helps improve your posture.

4. The hallway walk
Whenever possible, take a short walk down the hallway or around the office. Use this time to clear your mind, breathe deeply, and reset your focus. If you’re on a phone call, consider walking while you talk. This not only adds steps to your day but also keeps your energy levels up. Walking meetings are another great option if your office culture allows it.

5. Seated torso twist
The Seated Torso Twist is an excellent stretch for releasing tension in your spine and improving mobility. Sit up straight in your chair with your feet flat on the floor. Place your right hand on the back of your chair and twist your torso to the right, looking over your shoulder. Hold for 10-15 seconds, then repeat on the left side. This simple twist can do wonders for relieving stiffness in your back and improving your posture.

6. Leg swings
Leg swings are a dynamic stretch that can help loosen up your hips and improve your balance. Stand next to a sturdy surface like a desk or wall for support. Swing one leg forward and backward, keeping it straight. Do this for 10-15 swings, then switch to the other leg. This movement helps counteract the tightness that comes from sitting and promotes better mobility in your hips.

7. Ankle circles
Ankle circles are an easy way to improve circulation in your lower legs and prevent stiffness. While seated or standing, lift one foot off the ground and slowly rotate your ankle in a circular motion. Do 10 circles in one direction, then switch to the other direction. Repeat with the other ankle. This exercise is especially useful if you’ve been sitting for a while and need to get the blood flowing again.

Incorporating these simple exercises and stretches into your workday can have a profound impact on your physical and mental well-being. Not only do they help combat the negative effects of prolonged sitting, but they also boost your energy, improve your focus, and reduce stress.

Remember, it’s not about making drastic changes but rather about integrating small, consistent movements throughout your day.

The couple celebrated this special occasion by sharing the news with fans through a collaborative Instagram post. Deepika gave birth at HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and is still in the hospital, cherishing every moment with their newborn daughter.

Recently, a photo of Deepika holding a baby close to her chest has been circulating online, with claims that it was leaked from the hospital. However, it turns out that this photo is not genuine and does not show Deepika with her daughter.

For their baby announcement, Deepika and Ranveer kept it sweet and simple. On the day their daughter was born, they shared a charming graphic on Instagram featuring a large golden bow and a note that read, “Welcome baby girl. 8.9.2024. Deepika and Ranveer.”

Ranveer Singh had previously expressed his desire to have a daughter. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, he talked about his excitement for parenthood and mentioned his preference for having a girl. His wish has now come true, adding to their joy as new parents.

As for Deepika’s return to work, it appears she plans to take an extended break. According to recent reports, Deepika has decided not to participate in the third season of “The White Lotus” to fully focus on caring for her baby. She has reportedly chosen to handle all parenting duties herself, without hiring a nanny or relying on Ranveer for shared responsibilities, to ensure she can be a hands-on mother.

Deepika is set to be discharged from the hospital today, September 12, 2024. According to Zee News, both Deepika and Ranveer are thrilled to bring their daughter home. Ranveer, in particular, is ecstatic as his dream of having a baby girl has come true. The report also mentions that Ranveer has special plans for celebrating this new chapter in their lives.

The couple’s decision to maintain privacy for their newborn mirrors the approach taken by Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli with their daughter Vamika. Deepika and Ranveer have decided to follow in their footsteps and not allow any photographs of their little girl to be taken.

Following the announcement of their baby’s birth, Deepika and Ranveer shared a sweet post on Instagram. The image featured a golden bow with a message that read, “Welcome baby girl. 8.9.2024. Deepika and Ranveer.” This announcement coincided with the Ganpati celebrations, adding a festive touch to their personal milestone. Deepika was admitted to the hospital that evening, marking the start of their new journey as parents.

Prior to the birth, on September 6, 2024, Deepika and Ranveer visited the Siddhivinayak temple, a revered site known for fulfilling the wishes of its devotees. Deepika was seen in a beautiful green Banarasi saree, her baby bump subtly covered by her pallu. She opted for a natural look with minimal makeup and her hair styled in a low bun, avoiding heavy accessories. Ranveer complemented her in a beige kurta, and the couple was seen holding hands, with Deepika gently cradling her bump.

Jaishankar visited Berlin recently and met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, delivering personal greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on X, Jaishankar expressed his honor at meeting Scholz and conveyed PM Modi’s regards, while also looking forward to Scholz’s upcoming visit to India for the 7th Inter-Governmental Consultations.

Jaishankar’s visit to Germany from September 10-11 marked his third bilateral trip to Berlin since becoming External Affairs Minister and his second trip to Germany this year. His previous visit was to Munich in February 2024 for the Munich Security Conference.

During his Berlin visit, Jaishankar also met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations in preparation for the 7th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) scheduled for October 2024 in New Delhi. They noted that the 18th Asia Pacific Conference (APK) of German Businesses will be held in New Delhi next month, which is expected to enhance the business ties between the two countries.

In addition to discussions on regional and global issues such as Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific region, and West Asia, Jaishankar met with Jens Ploetner, the Foreign and Security Policy Advisor to the German Chancellor, and Boris Pistorius, the Federal Minister of Defence. These meetings reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening strategic, defense, and security cooperation between India and Germany.

Jaishankar also held discussions with Friedrich Merz, Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group; Michael Roth, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee; and other German Parliamentarians. The conversations focused on deepening bilateral engagement, including parliamentary cooperation and addressing key regional and global developments.

Furthermore, Jaishankar was invited as a Guest of Honour to speak at the Annual Conference of German Ambassadors, addressing German Ambassadors and key business leaders.

India and Germany have enjoyed a strategic partnership since 2000, and next year will mark the 25th anniversary of this collaboration. The partnership spans various sectors including trade, investment, defense, science, technology, innovation, sustainability, renewable energy, emerging technologies, development cooperation, culture, education, mobility, and people-to-people connections.

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a significant expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) to include all citizens aged 70 and above. This move will provide health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year to seniors, regardless of their financial status.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during a briefing on the Cabinet’s decisions, highlighted that this extension of benefits is a major step in ensuring comprehensive health coverage for the elderly. Previously, the Ayushman Bharat scheme was designed to assist those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, based on the 2011 Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC). The scheme originally provided up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for cashless hospitalization for secondary and tertiary care.

Vaishnaw emphasized that this decision reflects a humanitarian approach and fulfills a commitment made by the Prime Minister. The new policy is expected to impact around 4.5 crore families, equating to approximately 6 crore senior citizens, based on government estimates. Currently, the scheme covers 12.3 crore families.

For families already covered by the scheme with senior members, there will be an additional top-up coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year specifically for these elderly beneficiaries. For those families not previously covered due to their socioeconomic status, they will now receive a shared coverage of ₹5 lakh per year for senior citizens.

“The additional top-up coverage of up to ₹5 lakh will be specifically allocated for senior citizens within the families already covered by the scheme. This shared cover will be distributed among the senior members,” Vaishnaw explained.

Prime Minister Modi reiterated his government’s commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare for every Indian. He stated, “We are committed to ensuring accessible, affordable, and top-quality healthcare for every Indian. Today’s decision to expand the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme to include all citizens over 70 years old is a testament to that commitment.” Modi added that this scheme would bring dignity, care, and security to 60 million citizens.

Vaishnaw also noted that this expansion is timely given the increasing trend of families shifting from joint to nuclear structures. “This decision is highly relevant in today’s context, providing much-needed health coverage and social security to our senior citizens,” he said.

The implementation of these changes will begin soon. Seniors will need to apply to benefit from the new provisions. Those already covered under other health insurance schemes, whether central or state-based, such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) or defense schemes, will have the option to either remain with their current scheme or switch to Ayushman Bharat.

Vaishnaw clarified that seniors with private insurance will also be eligible to join the Ayushman Bharat scheme if they choose. Eligible beneficiaries will receive a new, distinct card under the upgraded scheme. The initial investment for this expansion is ₹3,437 crore, with provisions for future increases in coverage as needed.

</excerpt>

Congress on Wednesday hit back at the BJP for targeting Leader of Opposotion in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his comments and asked the ruling party to clear its stand on reservation, and also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving clean chit to China.
Responding to the charges of BJP, Congress publicity and media department chairman Pawan Khera said, “China entered into our territory and captured it. The Prime Minister gave clean chit to China.”

He said, it is Congress which spoke against the Chinese intrusion and condemned the clean chit that was given to China.

“Anti-national work was done by the person who gave the clean chit to China. Anti-national work was not done by us which condemned the clean chit,” the Congress leader said. Rahul Gandhi during his interaction in Washington DC on being asked that what he thinks if Prime Minister Modi has managed the US-China competition and said, “Well, if you call having Chinese troops in 4,000 square kilometres of our territory handling something well, then maybe we’ve got Chinese troops occupying land the size of Delhi in Ladakh. I think that’s a disaster… “How would America react if a neighbour occupied 4000 square kilometres of your territory? Would any president be able to get away with saying that he’s handled that well? So I don’t think PM Modi handled China well at all. I think there’s no reason Chinese troops should be sitting in our territory…” the LoP said.

While commenting on the Sikhs issue on which Rahul Gandhi spoke in US and triggered a controversy in India, Khera said, “There should be freedom in wearing turban. We want that only.”

Targeting the Prime Minister and the BJP, he said, “This is the same BJP where the Prime Minister says that he can recognize with their clothes. This is the same BJP which first beats people just because they are Muslim and they have and their beard.”
Citing examples, Khera said that a youth was killed in Haryana thinking he was a Muslim and then they apologised and will the country stay in such atmosphere.
“We are talking about Constitution, which gives freedom to everyone,” Khera said.

Rahul Gandhi had said: “The fight (in India) is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear a turban…whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a kada or go to the Gurudwara. That’s what the fight is about, and it’s not just for Sikhs, but for all religions.”
His comments triggered strong reactions from the BJP. Even Banned terror organisation Gurwantpant Singh Pannun also endorsed Rahul Gandhi’s remarks and dubbed it as “bold and pioneering” and also justified the demand for a separate Khalistani state.

On Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweets alleging anti reservation stand of Rahul Gandhi, Khera said: “I want to challenge Amit Shah that we are ready to increase reservation to more than 50 per cent as of now. Will they clear there stand on reservation.
Ge also commented on Pannun and said, “Give us Pegasus then we will tell who is behind him. His statements come when it suits the BJP.”

On Rahul Gandhi’s meeting Ilhan Omar, he said, “Have they ever heard about Ilham Omar before. She is a lawmaker and she met in a group with Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi met in a group and not secretly. If the BJP has any issue, then it should summon US Ambassador, Home Minister should write a letter to US State department.”

Omar was part of a group of 10 US lawmakers who met Gandhi in the US on Tuesday.
The first African refugee elected to Congress, Omar, in her earlier term as a Democrat Congresswomen in 2022, had moved an anti-India resolution, saying India was guilty of violating religious freedom. This was shortly after she went to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, a visit that India had condemned.

Khera while commenting on the fresh violence in Manipur, and said: “ The Prime Minister shouldn’t do cheap politics, he wasted 10 years. He should work, he should go to Manipur and try to wipe the tears of the people and heal there wounds.”

Many people have been injured in Manipur in the fresh violence. Even rocket launchers and drones were used in Manipur for the fresh attack.
Violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year and since then hundreds have died while many had to take refuge in the shelter camps.

</excerpt>

The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the United States has posed some significant challenges for the I.N.D.I.A. Alliance and Congress party. Additionally, it has given BJP a big chance to take aim at the Congress. The BJP has seized on Rahul Gandhi’s controversial comments and has now become aggressive on Rahul’s statement about ending reservation and is trying to make it a big issue in the elections.

In addition to this Rahul Gandhi’s recent controversial remarks during his US visit have further complicated Congress’s position, especially with elections approaching in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. Although Congress is defending its leader Rahul, it is also worried about reservation, praise of China, meeting with US MP Omar Ilhan who made anti-India statements and the statements made about Sikhs.

Experts are of the opinion Rahul Gandhi’s comments about ending reservation have weakened the opposition’s position. The BJP is using this to attack Congress, and the BSP is also opposing Gandhi. If Dalits and backward classes in Haryana shift their support away from Congress, it could help the BJP. Other parties are also making this an issue. Although Gandhi has clarified that his comments were misunderstood, the BJP is focusing on reservation and backward class politics to challenge Congress. Congress is struggling to address concerns over Gandhi’s remarks, his praise for China, meetings with US MP Ilhan Omar, and comments about Sikhs.

The BJP is aggressively targeting Congress over the issue of ending reservation. Rahul Gandhi’s comments about the Sikh community, including his statement that Sikhs cannot wear turbans and kada in India, have fueled nationwide protests from the Sikh community. Gandhi also praised China and questioned India’s unemployment situation. On the last day of his visit, he met with a US MP who has made anti-India statements, giving the BJP more issues to leverage. The BJP is now focusing on reservation issues in election states, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah leading the charge. Shah has declared that as long as the BJP is in power, reservation will remain protected. Having been criticized over reservation issues during the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is now using these same issues to attack Congress.

Moreover, The BJP is now launching scathing attacks on Congress by challenging it to choose a backward class candidate for Chief Minister. Haryana’s in-charge General Secretary, Satish Poonia, has specifically challenged Congress to declare a backward class or Dalit leader as its Chief Ministerial candidate if it truly supports these communities. Following Rahul Gandhi’s recent controversial statements, the BJP is now arguing that Congress has never genuinely supported backward classes.

During the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of trying to undermine the Constitution and end reservation, claims that were strongly denied by BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. They assured that reservation would remain protected. Despite this, Congress continued to attack the BJP over reservation issues. Even after the NDA government, led by Modi, took office, Rahul Gandhi and the India Alliance kept criticizing the NDA on reservation. Congress had planned to focus on reservation and backward class issues in upcoming elections. However, there is a significant faction within the party that is not fully supportive of backward class politics, fearing it could alienate upper-caste voters.

</excerpt>

Union Minister for Coal and Mines and BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir in-charge, G Kishan Reddy criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accusing him of having no knowledge of the power situation in Jammu & Kashmir while labelling him as a “political tourist” who misleads the public with baseless accusations during elections.

The remarks came in response to Gandhi’s claim that Jammu & Kashmir supplies electricity to the rest of India while its residents pay higher electricity bills.
Terming Gandhi’s statement as false, Reddy claimed that it also ignored the efforts made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in addressing the region’s energy challenges.

“Jammu & Kashmir has an immense hydropower potential of 18,000 megawatts, this capacity was grossly underutilized under previous Congress-led governments. Over the past 70 years, only 3,400 megawatts have been tapped, with the state itself contributing a mere 1,197 megawatts since independence. In contrast, the Modi administration has set a goal to add 3,014 megawatts of hydropower capacity by 2025-26. This will be achieved through four major hydroelectric projects currently under construction—Pakal Dul (1,000 MW, costing Rs8,112 crore), Ratle (850 MW, Rs5,282 crore), Kiru (624 MW, Rs4,287 crore), and Kwar (540 MW, Rs4,526 crore). These projects are expected to be completed between March and November 2026, collectively generating an estimated 10,614 million units of electricity annually,” he told the Daily Guardian.

The union territory will witness a three phase assembly election, which is happening after ten years, that starts next week.

Reddy claimed that there has been a drastic reduction in Jammu & Kashmir’s power deficit under the Modi government. The deficit, which stood at 17.8% in 2018-19, has fallen to 7.5% in the fiscal year 2023-24. According to him, the Jammu & Kashmir government spent approximately ₹9,500 crore on power purchases during the 2023-24 fiscal year, through the Jammu & Kashmir Power Corporation Limited (JKPCL). This significant expenditure has helped meet the energy demands of the region’s consumers, commercial entities, and industries.

Pointing towards the infrastructure improvements made to the state’s power transmission system, Reddy said that between 2019 and 2024, the government has increased transmission capacity by 4,520 MVA through the construction and enhancement of 38 grid substations. A further investment of Rs 4,950 crore is planned for the next three years to continue upgrading the transmission network, ensuring a more stable and efficient supply of electricity.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said resilience of supply chains is critical for the economy as he made a pitch to boost investments in domestic manufacturing of semiconductors which is the foundation of everything from smartphone to EV and AI.
Speaking at the SEMICON 2024 conference on the outskirts of the national capital, the Prime Minister said the Covid pandemic showed the importance of the supply chain and underscored the need to act to ward off any disruption.

“Resilience of the supply chain is very important,” he said. “India is working to create the same in different sectors of the economy.”
The world witnessed supply shocks during Covid-19, as stringent measures to control the spread of pandemic in China affected the industries and sectors dependent on imports from that country. One of the sectors impacted was chips that form a critical part of every electronic device.

Prime Minister showcased India’s reformist regime, stable policies and a market that has tasted technology to make a strong pitch for investments in semiconductor manufacturing.
“It is our dream to have an Indian-made chip in every device in the world,” he said and added that “We will do everything that is needed to make India a semiconductor powerhouse.”

Talking of steps taken by his government to boost semiconductor manufacturing, he said a reformist government, a growing manufacturing base and an aspirational market that has tasted technology provide a ‘Three-D Power’ for chip making in the country.
“Today’s India inspires confidence in the world. When the chips are down, you can bet on India,” he said.
He said investment of over Rs 1.5 lakh crore has already been committed in semiconductor manufacturing and many projects are in pipeline.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi emphasised that this is the ideal time to invest in India. He remarked, “Many projects are in the pipeline, and India today assures the world that when the chips are down, you can bet on India.” Describing India’s semiconductor industry as having “special diodes,” he said, “You invest and create value, while the government ensures stable policies and ease of doing business.”
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s focus on developing semiconductor-related infrastructure, mentioning the creation of a Rs 1 trillion research fund. He noted that initiatives like these will significantly boost innovation in the semiconductor and science sectors.

He further added, “India offers a unique three-dimensional advantage: a reform-orientated government, a growing manufacturing base, and a large, aspirational market. As a major consumer of chips, India has built world-class digital public infrastructure on this very foundation.” He also emphasised that the Indian government is providing 50% support for setting up semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the country.

Prime Minister Modi emphasised India’s significant contributions to the global semiconductor design ecosystem while also stressing the country’s commitment to education and skill development in this field.

He noted, “India accounts for 20% of the talent in semiconductor design worldwide. We are training a workforce of 85,000 technicians, engineers, and R&D specialists, with a focus on preparing students and professionals for the semiconductor industry.” Modi also mentioned that beyond talent development, India is prioritising the creation of semiconductor infrastructure.

The three-day SEMICON India 2024 conference highlights India’s semiconductor strategy and policies, aiming to establish the country as a global hub for semiconductors. The event brings together top executives of global semiconductor giants, as well as industry leaders, companies, and experts. Over 250 exhibitors and 150 speakers are participating in the conference.

</excerpt>

Agitating junior doctors continued to spar with the State Government over conditions to engage in talks with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which the Government rejected, insisting on talks “without preconditions”. The junior doctors are pressing for justice for a young medical student who was raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

State minister Chandrima Bhattacharya alleged that the fact that the agitating doctors had sent an email to the Chief Minister’s Office at 3:50 am laying down their pre-conditions pointed to the “political nature” of the protests. The doctors’ rejected the charge.
The protesting junior doctors had shared their list of five demands in an email sent to the state government. “Those creating trouble in justice should be asked to resign. Elections should be conducted, college counsel should be given recognition, and elected representatives should be part of it and not ‘selected’ representatives”.

The junior doctors maintained their sit-in outside Swasthya Bhawan, the State Health Department’s headquarters, for a second day, demanding the removal of the Kolkata Police Commissioner and senior Health Department officials from their positions.
Earlier in the day, the West Bengal Government had invited 12-15 representatives of junior doctors for talks at State secretariat Nabanna by 6 pm. Protesting doctors claimed that the Chief Secretary’s invite sent in the afternoon inviting them for talks did not mention about Mamata Banerjee’s presence during the proposed meeting. The doctors continued to insist on holding a face-to-face discussion with the Chief Minister which would have to be telecast live “in the interests of transparency”.

“Once again, as another opportunity, we invite your delegation preferably consisting of 12-15 colleagues to join us for a discussion at 6 pm today, i.e. 11.09.2024, at Nabanna. A list of the members of your delegation may please be intimated by email,” said a communication from the State Government sent by the Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on Wednesday afternoon.

Responding to the Chief Secretary’s invite for a meeting, the protesting junior doctors demanded at least a 30-member delegation to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “There are 26 State Government colleges in West Bengal. We want at least one representative from each college to be present,” said Kinjal Nanda, one of the striking doctors.

Other demands of the doctors include a discussion on their five-point demand in presence of the Chief Minister and live streaming of their meeting for the sake of “transparency”.
After declining the Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam’s invite on Tuesday, the agitating junior doctors had sought a meeting with the Chief Minister to discuss their demands and resolve the impasse. They declined yesterday’s invite for a meeting from the Health Secretary claiming the email invite felt “insulting”.

On Monday, at a press conference, Mamata Banerjee had invited the junior doctors for a meeting at the State secretariat to address the issue. State Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said the Chief Minister was waiting, but a protesting doctor called the email an “insult,” citing their demand for Nigam’s resignation and the limit on representation.
Despite the Supreme Court’s directive to resume duties by 5 pm on September 10, protesting junior doctors in Kolkata continued their strike for the 33rd day on Wednesday.
The Supreme Court on Monday had directed doctors on strike to resume work today at 5 pm, assuring them that they would not face any adverse actions, including punitive transfers. However, they also warned that if doctors did not return to work, they could not be held responsible for any actions taken against them. The Trinamool Congress also hailed the court’s judgement

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee has called a review meeting on September 12 with principals, directors and medical superintendents from all State-run medical colleges and hospitals. All police commissioners and district magistrates have also been invited.
The agitating doctors also slammed senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal Government, for presenting “false and concocted information” before a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

On Monday, Sibal had presented a status report prepared by the State Health Department. “A status report has been filed. The State Health Department has filed a report. Twenty-three people have died as doctors are on strike,” Sibal told the bench
Reacting to the stand-off between agitating junior doctors and the State Government, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary termed the protest as “historic”. “We are supporting them and are fighting for them. This is historic, the world will remember it”, he said.

The ruling Trinamool Congress claimed the ongoing junior doctors protest has affected patients access to critical care across hospitals. “A month after the R G Kar tragedy, confusion clouds the minds of countless patients. The cease-work by junior doctors has left vulnerable people unsure about access to critical care. Those already battling illness are now being turned away by hospitals meant to be their last hope”, the party posted on X.
Another Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir threatened that “people would soon hit the streets protesting against the doctors’ stir and therefore, he would not be able to guarantee the safety of doctors.”

</excerpt>

The political battlefield of Haryana has taken on the intensity of a wrestling arena, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielding a WWE wrestler Kavita Dalal against Congress’ Olympian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat from Julana constituency of Jind district.

The high-stake election in Julana, located in Jind district, now pits two celebrated athletes of the Jat community against each other, turning the political contest into an electrifying showdown. Kavita Dalal, a trailblazer in the world of professional wrestling, is being labelled as the first Indian woman to compete in the WWE, and she’s no stranger to gold herself—having secured the top spot in weight-lifting at the 2016 South Asian Games.
On the other side of the ring is Vinesh Phogat, the first Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic final, making this contest a gripping match of willpower, popularity, and public support.

Adding further intrigue to the race, the BJP has nominated Captain Yogesh Bairagi for the Julana seat, turning the contest into a three-way battle of wits between a wrestler, an Olympian, and a military captain. With all three contenders boasting impressive résumés, the Julana seat is set to be one of the most fiercely contested in the Haryana Assembly elections.

Kavita Dalal, born in Malvi village, Jind, comes from a humble background, being one of five siblings. Despite nearly quitting sports after her first child’s birth in 2010, her husband’s encouragement helped her make a powerful comeback, culminating in her gold medal victory in weight-lifting six years later. Her journey from the wrestling ring to the political battleground has been nothing short of inspirational.
With the entry of the sportspersons the Haryana Assembly elections take a new shape making the electoral battle more intense. Accompanied by Deepender Hooda, Vinesh filed her nomination papers on Wednesday as she claimed that she was confident of winning her first election.

With nominations closing on September 12 and voting scheduled for October 5, both AAP and the BJP are pulling out all the stops to woo voters.
In its latest list, the AAP announced 21 more candidates for the elections, bringing the total to 61. Among the key names are Raj Kaur Gill from Ambala Cantonment, Sunil Bindal from Karnal, and Nishant Anand from Gurugram.

Meanwhile, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and Azad Samaj Party (ASP) alliance released their third list of candidates, fielding 18 more contenders for the October polls. In a significant move, the alliance has thrown its support behind former minister Ranjit Singh Chautala, who recently resigned from the BJP after being denied a ticket. Chautala, who was an Independent MLA from Rania, is now poised to contest as an Independent once again, backed by the JJP-ASP coalition.

Among the ASP candidates are Mandeep Topra from Radaur, Moti Yadav from Rewari, and Nisha Balmiki from Faridabad.

</excerpt>

The Haryana Assembly elections have taken an unexpected turn as both the BJP and Congress are struggling to contain growing rebellion within their ranks over ticket allotment. Several senior leaders from both parties have filed their nominations as independents, going against the party line, creating a tumultuous atmosphere ahead of the polls.

In the BJP camp, the spotlight is on Mahendergarh, where senior leader and five-time MLA Ram Bilas Sharma has submitted his nomination papers after fearing exclusion from the official candidate list. Sharma, a former minister and state BJP president, made the move following intense deliberations with his supporters. Despite his long-standing service to the party, the delay in officially naming him as the candidate has sparked controversy, fuelled by RSS worker Kailash Chand filing his nomination as the BJP candidate, challenging Sharma’s stronghold.

The party’s internal conflict took a sharper turn when Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh came out strongly in defense of Sharma, praising him as a towering figure in the BJP’s Haryana unit. “When Ram Bilas Sharma’s name is mentioned at any BJP gathering, even the most prominent leaders seem to pale in comparison. In Haryana, no other name has flown the BJP flag higher than Ram Bilas Sharma’s,” Singh said.

“Whether the party grants him a ticket or not, no one has the right to insult him. If a case had to be filed, it should have been done earlier. Using a last-minute case as an excuse and claiming they’re still considering his candidacy is nothing short of rubbing salt in the wounds,” he added.

The discontent isn’t isolated. In Ladwa, BJP leader Sandeep Garg, frustrated by being overlooked for a ticket, has entered the fray as an independent candidate against Chief Minister Nayab Saini. Garg, a well-known businessman and social worker with significant influence among the Baniya community, could pose a serious threat to Saini’s chances, particularly if he rallies significant community support.

In Uklana, BJP candidate Anoop Dhanak is facing local backlash for allegedly ignoring farmers’ grievances during his tenure as a minister and JJP MLA. His candidacy, by overlooking local BJP leaders, has sparked protests. In Hisar, Minister Kamal Gupta is facing internal revolt as former MLA Savitri Jindal has announced her candidacy as an independent. Adding to the chaos, industrialist Subhash Chandra has refused to back Gupta, signaling further fractures. within the party’s base in this key constituency.

Moreover, in Gannaur is witnessing discontent as senior BJP leader Devender Kadyan has announced his departure from the party after being denied a ticket. The BJP has instead chosen to field Devender Kaushik, the brother of former MP Ramesh Kaushik, fueling further frustration among Kadyan’s supporters.

Meanwhile, the Congress is faring no better, with growing rebellion from its own leaders. Even as the party has yet to finalize candidates for 49 assembly constituencies, numerous leaders have already filed nominations, defying party discipline.

In Kalayat, a fierce battle is shaping up between two contenders. Vikas Saharan, son of Congress MP Jai Prakash, has already filed his nomination, while social activist-turned-politician Shweta Dhull, backed by senior leader Randeep Surjewala, is poised to submit hers soon. This internal power struggle is likely to intensify as both candidates vie for the party’s official endorsement.

Former MLA Lalit Nagar from Tigaon has also thrown his hat in the ring, declaring his intention to contest as a Congress candidate, despite the party not officially announcing him. His defiance signals deeper divisions within Congress, which is struggling to maintain unity as the election approaches.

Adding to the Congress’s woes, Ajit Phogat, a long-time party loyalist and former chairman, has rebelled by filing his nomination as an independent from Dadri. Phogat, who has served the Congress for over 20 years and held several key positions in the Youth Congress, decided to take matters into his own hands, showcasing the party’s ongoing struggle to maintain cohesion.

The group includes five individuals from Punjab—Sajanpreet Singh, Shamsher Singh, Karan Bhandari, Avinash, and Sehyad Singh—and Rajat Gupta from Haryana.
A total of 15 Indians have been discharged from the Russian army so far. An additional 10, including eight from Punjab, are expected to return soon.

The Indian Embassy in Russia arranged air tickets for the returning nationals. This development follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s July 2024 visit to Russia, where he stressed the urgent need for the release of all Indian nationals from the Russian forces.
Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sawhney, who has been advocating for the return of these youths, expressed gratitude to the Indian Mission in Moscow for their efforts. India has been pressing Russian authorities for the early release of its citizens and ensuring their safety.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently informed the Parliament that 89 Indians are employed in the Russian army, with 66 seeking early discharge.
