Engineers demand pay parity with peers, while management claims budget constraints. Contingency plans include expanded bus services, but disruptions impact 350,000 daily riders across New Jersey and New York.
</excerpt>

New Jersey Transit commuter rail engineers started their walkout on early Friday morning after collective bargaining talks collapsed on the eve of a midnight deadline their union had imposed to negotiate wage demands. This is the first strike in the country’s third-largest transit system in more than 40 years.

The walkout began at 12:01 a.m. EDT, prompting NJ Transit to order a ‘safe shutdown’, refusing to allow any new train to depart after that hour. Existing trains that were on their routes were permitted to finish their runs.

Speaking for 450 engineers, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen reported that Thursday’s 15-hour non-stop bargaining collapsed after NJ Transit management staged a walkout at 10 p.m.

At a press conference, Governor Phil Murphy and NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri confirmed talks had paused but emphasized management’s willingness to resume negotiations anytime.

“We must reach a final deal that is both fair to employees and affordable,” Murphy stated. “Let’s get back to the table and seal a deal.”

The U.S. National Mediation Board contacted both sides, proposing to restart talks on Sunday morning or sooner if desired.

The union did not say when talks could resume but said picket lines will be established at 4 a.m. at a variety of sites, including NJ Transit headquarters in Newark, New York City’s Penn Station, and the Atlantic City rail terminal.

Murphy and Kolluri also revealed contingency plans to respond to the effect of the work stoppage, the first transit strike in New Jersey since a three-week walkout in 1983.

NJ Transit had previously canceled buses and trains to MetLife Stadium for pop singer Shakira’s concerts last Thursday and Friday nights because of threatened strikes. People were told to telecommute starting Friday if they can.

As a substitute, NJ Transit expects to provide additional bus service on regular routes and charter private buses from satellite parking lots. Buses will only be able to accommodate about 20% of rail passengers.

The union work stoppage follows a proposed March agreement union members voted overwhelmingly against.

The union is trying to bring engineers’ salaries more in line with those of other regional commuter railroads.

NJ Transit argues it cannot pay the raises demanded, worrying that awarding increases to engineers would prompt 14 other unions to seek the same increases.

Today, engineers allegedly make a $135,000 average salary, with management making a deal that brings that average up to $172,000. The union disagrees, citing the present average at $113,000.

Both sides have accused one another of bad faith bargaining.

Kolluri last week charged the union with “playing a game of chicken with the lives of 350,000 riders.

Tom Haas, general chairman of the union, stated, “We have asked for nothing more than equal pay for equal work, only to be repeatedly rebuffed by New Jersey Transit.”

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause, with theories including a drone strike, bird impact, or mechanical failure. Video shows possible rotor detachment.
</excerpt>

The helicopter tour firm that was involved in last week’s deadly crash over the Hudson River, which claimed the lives of six people, is shutting down operations, U.S. officials confirmed on Sunday.

The tragic accident killed a senior corporate executive, his wife, and three children, along with the pilot. The family had been on an outing described by the company as the “ultimate sightseeing tour of New York City.”

After the accident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revealed on X, “New York Helicopter Tours is closing their operations immediately.” The FAA continued, “The FAA will be conducting an immediate review of the tour operator’s license and safety record.”

The crash has called for a closer examination of aviation safety regulations, particularly in the face of a chain of recent airline disasters in the U.S. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is already leading the way in performing an investigation to determine the exact cause as to why the helicopter collapsed.

The officials of Jersey City have proposed a number of reasons as to why the crash occurred, from a collision with a drone, a bird strike, or a mechanical failure. Video footage that emerged depicts the rotor appearing to detach from the fuselage of the helicopter in flight.

This accident follows a string of recent air crashes in the United States. In an earlier incident this year, 67 individuals lost their lives when a military helicopter and a commercial plane collided in Washington. In another incident on Friday, a small plane crashed shortly after it took off from Boca Raton airport in Florida, reportedly as a result of a mechanical issue, killing three individuals.

Authorities rushed him to the hospital, sparking renewed safety concerns in the city.
</excerpt>

A 45-year-old man set himself ablaze in the heart of Times Square on Sunday, in a shocking incident that left bystanders stunned. The self-immolation occurred just months after a deadly arson attack in a subway car claimed the life of a woman.

Man Engulfed in Flames, Rushed to Hospital

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), officers discovered the man engulfed in flames at approximately 4 AM (local time). Emergency responders quickly intervened and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage from the scene reveal the man, shirtless and severely burned, running nearly 100 feet westward while on fire. A good Samaritan jumped out of a car and used a powder fire extinguisher to put out the flames. Authorities reported that the accelerant used in the incident was stored in a Patrón tequila bottle, but it remains unclear whether the act was self-inflicted or if foul play was involved. The assailant, if any, allegedly fled the scene.

This incident has further fueled concerns about street violence in New York, a major issue in the city’s upcoming mayoral elections. Former governor Andrew Cuomo described the city as being “out of control” and pledged to deploy 5,000 additional police officers if elected. In contrast, current Mayor Eric Adams dismissed the notion that police shortages were the root cause of crime and instead pointed to bail reforms introduced during Cuomo’s administration.

Despite these debates, official statistics indicate a significant drop in crime rates across the city. “Stop saying our city is in ‘chaos and crisis’! It is not,” Adams declared last week.

Similar Incident Occurred Months Ago

The incident in Times Square comes just three months after a tragic arson attack in a New York subway car. In that case, 57-year-old Debrina Kawam lost her life after being set on fire. Sebastian Zapeta, a Guatemalan migrant worker, was arrested hours later and charged with murder and arson.

Police reports revealed that Zapeta did not flee the scene and was found with a lighter in his pocket. “Lighting another human being on fire and watching them burn alive reflects a level of evil that cannot be tolerated,” the mayor’s office said in a statement following Kawam’s death.

Lawmaker Slams Trump Over ‘Tyrant’ Allegations

<excerpt>French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann criticized Trump’s tariff threats, suggesting that France should reclaim the Statue of Liberty as the US moves away from democratic values. His remarks sparked a heated debate on US-France relations.
</excerpt>

As US President Donald Trump intensifies trade tensions with Europe, a French politician has sparked a heated debate by suggesting that France should take back the Statue of Liberty—a historic gift to the United States.

France Fires Back at US Tariff Threats

Raphaël Glucksmann, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the Socialists and Democrats group, strongly criticised Trump’s economic policies, particularly his threats of high tariffs on European goods. Speaking at a party convention, Glucksmann sarcastically proposed that since the US appears to be moving away from democratic values, France should reclaim its iconic gift.

“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently, you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home,” he remarked, as reported by Politico. His comments seemed to reference Washington’s decision to pause aid to Ukraine and Trump’s warming ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Glucksmann’s Bold Remarks on US Jobs and Research

Adding to his provocative statements, Glucksmann suggested that France could benefit from Trump’s job cuts. He invited American professionals, particularly researchers dismissed under Trump’s administration, to move to France and contribute to its economy.

“If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to dismiss the people who made your country a global powerhouse, we’ll gladly welcome them here,” he declared.

A Symbol of US-French Relations Under Scrutiny

The Statue of Liberty, unveiled in New York Harbor in 1886, was a gift from France to celebrate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. Designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, the statue has long been a symbol of freedom and democracy.

While France has its own smaller replica of the monument along the Seine River in Paris, Glucksmann’s suggestion, though clearly symbolic, highlights the growing strain in US-France relations amid Trump’s protectionist policies.

French MEP Criticizes Trump and Musk’s Influence

Glucksmann also took aim at far-right leaders in France, accusing them of being “a fan club” for both Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who has played a key role in shaping the US president’s economic strategies.

As trade disputes and political tensions escalate, Glucksmann’s remarks reflect a broader European frustration with the current US administration, further complicating diplomatic ties between the two longtime allies.

Six individuals were thrown into the water as the boat capsized near Breezy Point, a well-known area at the tip of Queens’ Rockaway Peninsula. Rescue teams managed to pull five people from the water and transport them to nearby hospitals. Tragically, three of them succumbed to their injuries.

Authorities confirmed that one of the injured remains in critical condition, while another is stable. Two victims were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital, while the remaining three were taken to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, where medical teams awaited them.

While the exact circumstances remain unclear, NYPD has stated that no other vessel appears to have collided with the boat. The Coast Guard confirmed that they received an alert about a “vessel taking on water” and later described the boat as “sinking.” Further details about the victims and the type of boat involved are yet to be disclosed.

Italian authorities are investigating as security protocols remain in effect.
</excerpt>

An American Airlines flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to New Delhi (DEL) was diverted in an emergency to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport after a bomb threat was reported on board.

The Boeing 777-300ER, with 285 people on board, was supposed to fly nonstop to India. But mid-flight, flight crew received a tip-off of a possible explosive device on board, and action was taken immediately following international aviation security procedures.

As per AirNav Radar tracking services, the plane took a steep turn over the Mediterranean Sea and diverted towards Rome, where preparations for emergency landing were quickly set in motion. The flight is being closely monitored as it crosses into Italian airspace.

Rome authorities are set to carry out a complete security scan of the plane prior to deciding on the future of passengers and crew. More information about the threat and investigation is not disclosed.

</excerpt>

New York State Police charged five individuals on Friday in connection with the murder of a missing man who, according to authorities, was subjected to prolonged violence and torture for over a month before his body was discarded in a field.

The victim, Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man originally from Minnesota, was reported missing on February 9. Police stated that he had arrived in New York in September and subsequently lost contact with his loved ones.

Major Kevin Sucher, commander of the state police troop overseeing the Finger Lakes region, described the case as “beyond depraved” and “by far the worst” homicide investigation the department had ever encountered.

“No human being should have to endure what Sam endured,” Sucher said during a televised press conference. Authorities refrained from disclosing many details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

When asked whether Nordquist’s torture and murder were being considered a hate crime, Capt. Kelly Swift of the New York State Police Troop E’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation stated that investigators had not ruled out the possibility but emphasized that inquiries were still ongoing. Authorities are also working to establish Nordquist’s relationship with the suspects, as well as the suspects’ connections to each other.

The individuals charged include Precious Arzuaga, 38, and Patrick Goodwin, 30, from Canandaigua, New York; Kyle Sage, 33, from Rochester, New York; Jennifer Quijano, 30, from Geneva, New York; and Emily Motyka, 19, from Lima, New York. All five face second-degree murder charges after police executed a search at Patty’s Lodge motel in Canandaigua, the last known location where Nordquist had been staying.

The suspects were taken into custody and remained detained pending their arraignment. It was not immediately clear if any of them had secured legal representation.

Swift stated that the investigation had uncovered a “deeply disturbing pattern of abuse” that ultimately led to Nordquist’s death, calling it “one of the most horrific crimes” she had investigated in her 20-year law enforcement career.

</excerpt>

On February 11, 2025, the New York State Department of Health confirmed the first case of a new mpox strain in the state, adding to growing concerns over the spread of this variant across the globe. The variant, identified as the clade Ib strain, has been reported in a handful of cases in the United States, with other confirmed cases emerging in California, Georgia, and New Hampshire. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the cases are not linked, suggesting that the strain could spread independently. This new strain adds complexity to an already alarming situation as public health experts closely monitor its spread.

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, was previously a rare viral infection primarily confined to Central and West Africa. However, in recent years, the disease has gained international attention due to an outbreak that began in 2022, marking the first significant spread of the disease outside of its typical endemic regions. The virus, which causes a rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes, gained further global attention during the 2022 outbreak when it spread to multiple countries across the world. In response to this outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global public health emergency in August 2022. The declaration followed the virus’s spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo into neighboring countries, which raised concerns about the virus’s evolving nature and its potential to spread globally.

The New Mpox Strain: An Evolving Threat

The new strain of mpox, identified as clade Ib, has sparked concern within the medical community, particularly as the virus continues to affect regions outside of its traditional endemic areas. The CDC has confirmed three cases in the U.S. to date, but the full scale of the virus’s spread remains unclear. As with other viral infections, the ability of mpox to mutate and evolve raises alarm bells, particularly as health officials try to understand the characteristics and potential impact of this new strain.

The virus is primarily spread through close contact with an infected individual or animal, often via bodily fluids or lesions on the skin. Though the symptoms are generally mild and the disease is rarely fatal, the impact of the disease can be severe for certain populations, including young children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals. The outbreak in 2022 raised fears that mpox could become a more widespread public health threat, similar to other viruses such as COVID-19.

Currently, there is no vaccine specifically for mpox, though the smallpox vaccine has been shown to offer protection against the virus. Health officials have urged individuals to take preventive measures, particularly those at higher risk of exposure, such as healthcare workers and individuals who have close contact with animals or infected people. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC continue to monitor the virus’s evolution, urging swift identification of new variants to prevent further spread.

The Global Response to Mpox

The confirmation of the new strain in New York adds to the growing global concerns over the spread of mpox. Since the WHO declared mpox a public health emergency, many countries have ramped up their surveillance efforts, improving diagnostic testing, increasing vaccination efforts, and enhancing public awareness campaigns. The U.S., in particular, has been on high alert due to the significant outbreak in 2022, which prompted nationwide efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

The World Health Organization has also been working closely with national health departments to monitor and control the spread of mpox. Experts are particularly focused on the ability of the virus to adapt to new environments and potentially develop resistance to current interventions. However, despite these efforts, the detection of the new strain highlights the need for continued vigilance and adaptation to an evolving public health threat.

Impact on Public Health and Healthcare Systems

The ongoing spread of mpox and the emergence of new strains pose serious risks to public health and the healthcare systems of affected countries. While the disease is generally less severe than other viral infections like COVID-19, its impact on vulnerable populations cannot be underestimated. Healthcare providers are already grappling with the fallout from the pandemic, and the emergence of new strains of mpox could further strain resources, particularly in regions where the virus is spreading more rapidly.

Additionally, the social and psychological impacts of outbreaks such as mpox cannot be overlooked. In communities where fear and misinformation are prevalent, the spread of disease often leads to stigmatization and increased anxiety. Public health campaigns that focus on debunking myths, educating the public, and providing accessible resources are essential to curbing both the spread of the virus and the fear surrounding it.

The Role of Research in Combatting Mpox

As with any emerging infectious disease, research is critical in understanding the virus and developing effective treatments. In the case of mpox, there is still much to learn about the virus, particularly regarding its new strains. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other research organizations are actively studying the virus’s genetic makeup, transmission patterns, and potential treatments. Researchers are also investigating the effectiveness of the smallpox vaccine in protecting against mpox and whether any modifications or additional vaccines may be necessary to combat the evolving virus.

Understanding the potential mutations of the virus and the impact of those mutations on transmissibility and severity is crucial in preventing widespread outbreaks. The recent detection of the clade Ib strain suggests that further research is needed to understand the long-term implications of this variant and whether it will require different public health responses.

Addressing the Mpox Threat

As the world faces the ongoing challenge of managing the spread of mpox, particularly with the emergence of new strains, it is clear that coordinated global efforts will be key to minimizing the virus’s impact. National health authorities, alongside global organizations like the WHO, must continue to invest in research, improve diagnostic capabilities, and ensure that preventative measures like vaccines are accessible to those at risk.

The emergence of new mpox strains, such as the clade Ib variant, underscores the importance of ongoing surveillance and preparedness for future outbreaks. While the current cases in the U.S. remain isolated, the global interconnectedness of modern society means that rapid spread across borders is always a possibility. As such, public health authorities must remain vigilant in monitoring the situation and responding swiftly to any signs of widespread transmission.

In conclusion, while the recent confirmation of the new mpox strain in New York raises concerns, it also presents an opportunity for the medical community to refine its understanding of the virus and enhance efforts to prevent future outbreaks. By learning from previous experiences and staying proactive in research and public health efforts, the world can reduce the impact of mpox and other emerging infectious diseases in the years to come. The focus on prevention, treatment, and education remains central in the global fight against this evolving threat.

These alternatives provide natural-looking results without implants. Popular among influencers, these procedures offer safer, cost-effective options.
</excerpt>

New York women, in pursuit of natural beauty without surgery, increasingly opt for non-invasive breast enhancement treatments. One popular choice is the “vampire” breast lift that uses platelet-rich plasma therapy. The Cleavage Clinic in Midtown has been drawing attention for its provision of such a treatment and other options such as Sculptra and Morpheus8 to women looking for alternatives to implants.

Kelsey Soles, a 29-year-old lifestyle influencer, has just received PRP therapy to enhance her bust. “I used the plasma in my body to make my boobs bigger,” Soles said, whom she’s been waiting for to rock 2025 as “the year of big, natural t—ts”. She will have the first session on 30 January and should be able to reach a full C cup size after three treatments.

Noelle Villella, one of the clinic’s founders, said PRP, previously used for hair restoration and to heal injuries, is now injected into breast tissue. “Plasma is very rich in growth factors,” Villella said. “Once it’s injected, it creates new collagen, enhancing the quality of the skin, and the outcome is natural looking.

The procedure, which costs around $3,800 or approximately ₹3,30,950, involves taking plasma out from the blood of the patient, processing it into a gel-like substance, and ensuring the safe injection of this substance via the cannula into the breast. Results normally last up to three years.

Danielle, 29, of SoHo, opted for PRP because it was safer than implants. “I’d considered surgery, but I wanted something natural with little to no health risks,” she said, calling the treatment an “instant boob job.” She’s looking forward to flaunting her new B-cups during a summer vacation in Greece.

Other treatments, such as Morpheus8 micro-needling, are also popular for tightening skin and removing scars. For instance, 24-year-old lifestyle influencer Isabella Attianese had the FDA-approved procedure to lift her breasts, while beauty influencer Olivia Caputo, 28, used it to remove scarring from a previous augmentation.

For some, a product like Sculptra, which stimulates collagen through injectables, has brought amazing results. Lurene Gunmia of New Jersey, a mother of three, paid $6,000 for Sculptra to augment her bust from 32AA to 32B. “It feels good to do something just for me,” she said. “It’s a confidence booster.”

With more women seeking natural, non-surgical alternatives, Villella emphasized the clinic’s focus on safety and customer satisfaction. “We’re in a world where people want natural results without putting unnatural things in their bodies,” she explained, noting that their treatments are also more affordable than traditional breast surgeries.

</excerpt>

Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed reports Friday night when New York State’s Stewart International Airport experienced a strange drone activity near that forced an hour-long shutdown as local authorities managed to respond with measures regarding the blocking airspace.

Concerns over drone sightings have increased across New York and neighboring states. Similar incidents have recently occurred in New Jersey, scaring citizens and lawmakers.
The FBI has received over 3,000 tips from investigations mostly at night time.
Governor Hochul termed the repeated disruptions caused by drones as unacceptable, saying, “This has gone too far.”

The recent shutdown of Stewart Airfield near New Windsor, north of Manhattan, is one of several such incidents in the region. Within 24 hours of the airport’s closure, the New York State Police (NYSP) received numerous reports of drone activity. However, the NYSP clarified that the sightings did not pose an immediate threat to public safety.

Federal agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, said Thursday that, as of now, there is no evidence that the drone activity poses a national security threat. The two agencies are working together with local authorities to dig deeper into the matter.

In response to the incidents, Governor Hochul had earlier directed the NYS Intelligence Center to conduct a thorough investigation. She implored Congress to pass the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act Saturday. This bill would give state and local governments more power to control the use of drones and bolster efforts to combat Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Hochul emphasized the need for federal funding to protect critical infrastructure, calling on the Biden administration to provide more resources to New York and its neighboring states.

New Jersey has also experienced the rise of drone sightings. On Friday, Governor Phil Murphy wrote to President Joe Biden requesting further federal support to handle the issue. The New Jersey State Police have been probing reports of UAS activity since November 18. Despite assistance from DHS and FBI, Murphy wrote about the need for more resources in order to conduct a more comprehensive investigation.

Murphy also called for Congress to reauthorize federal counter-UAS authorities, warning that the lack of appropriate legislation would limit the ability of state and local law enforcement to respond to the threat. He also requested the state to provide better tools for detection and mitigation to local authorities so that response capabilities could improve.

To add to this discussion was former President Donald Trump weighing in on the drone sightings in his national address Friday night. In his posts on Truth Social, the former president bashed the Biden administration for holding back crucial facts in the probes. According to him, if it is a danger, shoot down these drones, and ensure enough information is disseminated concerning cases that have not yet been solved.

</excerpt>

New York police are actively searching for the masked gunman who shot and killed Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance unit, on a Midtown Manhattan sidewalk. The shooting occurred early Wednesday, just before the company’s annual investor conference at the Hilton on Sixth Avenue.

Thompson, 50, a father of two, was shot from behind in what authorities describe as a brazen and targeted attack. In their investigation, police have been reviewing surveillance videos and have released multiple images of the suspect captured by security cameras during his time in New York. The assailant was last seen riding an electric bicycle into Central Park.

Police have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest

To aid in the investigation, police have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter. Notably, shell casings found at the scene bore the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” which are reminiscent of the title of Jay Feinman’s 2010 book, “Delay Deny Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.” Feinman, a professor emeritus at Rutgers University Law School, declined to comment on the connection.

UnitedHealth is the largest health insurer in the United States, providing coverage to millions of Americans. Thompson joined the company in 2004 and became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.

Investigators believe the suspect arrived in New York City on November 24 after traveling from Atlanta by bus. He reportedly checked into a hostel using fake identification and paid in cash. Detectives suspect that the shooter is experienced with firearms, as he executed the attack slowly and deliberately.

Security footage shows the gunman, dressed in a hooded sweatshirt, ski mask, and gray backpack, approaching Thompson from behind and firing at him. Police reported that the shooter waited outside the hotel for several minutes before the attack, ignoring other pedestrians.

In addition to the surveillance footage, police discovered a phone in an alley that the gunman fled through, as well as a water bottle he purchased shortly before the shooting. However, a fingerprint found on the bottle was too smudged to provide useful information.

New York City boasts one of the most advanced surveillance systems in the country, developed largely in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks. The city is equipped with thousands of cameras, allowing real-time monitoring and review of past footage, enhanced by facial recognition technology.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing the suspect to justice.

</excerpt>

Two people were killed in a horrific single-car Tesla crash in a New York suburb on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred in Pelham Manor, near the Bronx, when the speeding electric vehicle crashed into a wall and caught fire around 9:15 a.m.

The Tesla was reported to have passed through an intersection on Shore Road before slamming into a barrier and bursting into flames. Despite the efforts of local firefighters who arrived at the scene, the victims—driver and passenger—were pronounced dead at the site after the fire was extinguished. It took emergency crews about 20 minutes to put out the flames, but they remained on the scene for hours to remove the bodies and clear debris, including scattered lithium-ion batteries.

At the time of reporting, the identities and ages of the victims had not been disclosed.

The fire chief, Michael Greco, noted that they knew the vehicle’s battery had been compromised due to the “popping” sounds heard during the blaze. The tragic crash occurred just weeks before Christmas, and local auto service owner Chris Ganpat expressed his sympathy, emphasizing how upsetting it was for the victims’ families during the holiday season.

Preliminary investigations suggest speed may have contributed to the crash, but the cause remains under investigation. This incident adds to the increasing number of fatal crashes involving Tesla vehicles, including a separate crash involving a Tesla Cybertruck that killed three students just days earlier.

A 117-year-old legislation that considered cheating a crime has been removed in New York by formally abolishing adultery. The old law was repealed on Friday when Governor Kathy Hochul signed the measure. Adultery was categorised as a class B misdemeanour under this rule, which was initially intended to deter divorces and carried a maximum 90-day prison sentence. Decades of discussion and resounding legislative backing led to the outcome.

Governor Hochul Leads the Change

Governor Kathy Hochul, New York’s first happily married governor in nearly 20 years, led this progressive change. Reflecting on the decision, she said:
“While I’ve been fortunate to share a loving married life with my husband for 40 years — making it somewhat ironic for me to sign a bill decriminalising adultery — I know that people often have complex relationships. These matters should clearly be handled by these individuals and not our criminal justice system. Let’s take this silly, outdated statute off the books, once and for all.”

Hochul’s three immediate predecessors faced extramarital scandals, with all their marriages ending in divorce. Her decision marks a significant step toward modernising the state’s approach to personal relationships.

Years of Efforts Finally Pay Off

Efforts to repeal the law began as early as 1967, when a state commission recommended its removal. However, the legislature failed to act, leaving the law in place for another six decades. In 2020, former Assemblyman Dan Quart introduced a bill to repeal it, but his departure from office delayed progress. This year, Assemblyman Charles Lavine revived the effort and successfully pushed the repeal through the legislature.

Adultery Laws Across the United States

16 States Still Criminalise Adultery

In 2024, adultery remains illegal in 16 U.S. states, including North Carolina, Georgia, Utah, and Michigan. These states impose penalties such as fines or jail time for those found guilty.

For example:

Florida: Adultery can result in up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Illinois: Cheating is classified as a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and fines reaching $2,500.

Although rare, charges and convictions still occur in these states, keeping the outdated laws on their books.

Progressive States Lead the Way

On the other hand, states like California have decriminalised adultery entirely. California, a no-fault divorce state, does not consider infidelity when deciding property division or alimony. This approach reflects a shift toward prioritising personal privacy and modern values.

A Step Toward Modern Standards

New York’s repeal of its adultery law marks a pivotal moment in updating its legal framework. By removing this outdated statute, the state aligns with contemporary views on personal freedoms. The decision reinforces the idea that private relationships should remain outside the scope of criminal law.

A banana taped to a wall, titled Comedian by renowned Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was sold for a staggering $6.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The buyer, Justin Sun, cryptocurrency entrepreneur and founder of the Tron blockchain, referred to the piece as a cultural milestone, stating, “It represents a phenomenon that connects art, memes, and cryptocurrency.”

Initially introduced at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019, Comedian stirred debates about the definition of art. The banana installation, priced at $120,000 during its debut, symbolized Cattelan’s provocative exploration of societal norms.

A Historic Sale

The auction attracted seven bidders and surpassed Sotheby’s estimated guide price of $1-1.5 million. The $6.2 million sale included not only the artwork but also a certificate of authenticity and guidelines on replacing the fruit, ensuring its conceptual integrity despite the banana’s perishability.

Sun, however, has a unique plan for his newly acquired artwork. “In the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honoring its place in both art history and popular culture,” he announced.

From Gold Toilets to Iconic Bananas

This is not Cattelan’s first foray into unconventional art. The artist is also known for America, an 18-carat gold toilet that he once offered to Donald Trump during his presidency.

Comedian, which became infamous after performance artist David Datuna ate the original banana in 2019, continues to be a conversation starter in the art world. Sun’s purchase is expected to spark further debates about the intersection of art, value, and cultural impact.

Progress was made on fires in Ventura County, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, though air quality warnings were issued due to smoke.
</excerpt>

Firefighters continued to battle large wildfires on both coasts of the United States on Sunday, with multiple blazes causing widespread damage and fatalities. In New York and New Jersey, a deadly fire claimed the life of an 18-year-old state parks employee, while in Southern California, a wildfire destroyed over 130 structures and damaged dozens more.

In Ventura County, California, the Mountain Fire, which began last Wednesday, continued to burn out of control, fueled by dry conditions and strong Santa Ana winds. The fire, which has scorched about 32 square miles, remains 26% contained as of Sunday, with firefighters working in difficult, rugged terrain. The fire has forced thousands to evacuate their homes and poses a threat to critical infrastructure, including highways.

Meanwhile, a tragic incident in New York unfolded as Dariel Vasquez, a state parks employee, died after being struck by a falling tree while battling a wildfire in Sterling Forest, near Greenwood Lake. Vasquez, 18, was helping with fire line construction when the accident occurred. Tributes poured in from fellow workers, remembering him for his dedication.

In New Jersey, the Jennings Creek Wildfire threatened 25 structures, including homes, and has grown to 4.7 square miles, although it is 10% contained. Officials warned residents about unhealthy air quality caused by smoke from these fires, urging vulnerable groups to limit outdoor activity.

On the East Coast, firefighters made progress on smaller blazes, with containment achieved in some areas, such as a 175-acre fire in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. However, the state also reported charges in connection with a fire sparked by incendiary ammunition at a shooting range.

With the fire season in full swing, authorities remain on high alert as the risk of wildfires continues to escalate.

Witnesses reported seeing the unidentified woman enter the water intentionally from Goat Island, near the iconic Horseshoe Falls. A search operation is underway, involving Park Police drones, foot patrols of the gorge, and visual searches from nearby overlooks, as confirmed by law enforcement to WGRZ.

New York Mother and Children Believed Dead After Plunge

The incident follows the tragic case of 33-year-old Chianti Means, who, on October 28, allegedly jumped into Niagara Falls from Luna Island with her two children, five-month-old Mecca Means and nine-year-old Roman Rossman. According to New York State Police, the mother’s actions were believed to be intentional. All three are presumed dead.

Means, a resident of Niagara Falls who worked as a domestic violence counselor, had been sharing distressing posts on social media prior to the incident. Her posts reflected deep emotional turmoil stemming from a separation. In one post, she wrote, “I wish someone would love me because the man that’s supposed to does not.” In another, she shared, “Everyone please leave me alone. I’m in love with my daughter’s father. I want my family back… Respectfully Idgaf what I said about him before or what anyone else thinks!!” She added, “You have to hold on to the ones you love. Never know when you might lose them.”

Despite these posts, authorities have indicated they do not suspect any involvement by the father of her children.

</excerpt>

Mark Longo, a resident of Pine City, New York, is appealing to state authorities to return his beloved pet squirrel, Peanut, after wildlife officials seized the animal during a raid at his home. Peanut, also known as P’Nut, has garnered a massive following on social media platforms, where he has charmed audiences with his playful antics and adorable outfits.

The Raid and the Complaints

On Wednesday, at least six officers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) arrived at Longo’s residence following multiple anonymous complaints regarding the safety and legality of keeping Peanut as a pet. Longo expressed his disbelief at the situation, saying, “The DEC came to my house and raided my house without a search warrant to find a squirrel! I was treated as if I was a drug dealer and they were going for drugs and guns.”

WATCH THE VIRAL VIDEO:

In addition to Peanut, the officers also seized a raccoon named Fred, which Longo had recently taken in. The DEC stated that the investigation stemmed from reports concerning the potentially unsafe housing of wildlife and the illegal keeping of wild animals as pets.

Longo’s Plea and Growing Support

Following the seizure, Longo took to social media to mourn Peanut’s loss, expressing his fear that the squirrel might have been euthanized. “I don’t know if Peanut is alive,” he said in an interview. “I don’t know where he is.” In response to the situation, Longo launched a petition that has already gained nearly 20,000 signatures from supporters urging the return of Peanut.

Background on Peanut’s Rescue

Longo rescued Peanut seven years ago after witnessing the squirrel’s mother get hit by a car in New York City. After nurturing Peanut for several months, Longo attempted to release him into the wild, only to find Peanut injured and unable to fend for himself. Realizing Peanut lacked survival skills, Longo decided to keep him as an indoor pet.

The duo quickly became internet sensations, with Peanut’s Instagram account showcasing his playful personality—often seen wearing costumes and sharing snacks with Longo’s cat. Peanut’s story has even been featured in prominent media outlets, including USA Today.

Longo’s Animal Sanctuary and Future Plans

In addition to caring for Peanut, Longo runs P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, which he established earlier this year. The sanctuary is home to around 300 animals, including horses, goats, and alpacas. Longo is aware of New York’s regulations regarding the ownership of wild animals and is in the process of obtaining the necessary permits to keep Peanut legally.

“We’re willing to comply with the rules,” Longo said. “If we’re not following the rules, guide us in the right direction to follow the rules.”

As for Fred, the raccoon, Longo had hoped to rehabilitate the animal and return it to its natural habitat.

Precedents in Animal Confiscation Cases

Longo is not alone in his struggle, as others have faced similar issues with the DEC. A man in Buffalo is currently suing the agency to reclaim his alligator that was seized earlier this year. The ongoing debate over the legality of keeping wild animals as pets continues to spark discussions about wildlife welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners.

</excerpt>

Former US President Donald Trump arrived in New York, the Democratic Party’s stronghold, for a campaign rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, where dedicated supporters spent the night in sleeping bags to secure spots in the 20,000-seat arena. Meanwhile, protesters prepared to demonstrate against the event.

In light of two prior assassination attempts on Trump, police and the Secret Service established a tight security perimeter around Madison Square Garden, a venue known for major sports events, concerts, and a 2014 rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Despite the challenging odds—Trump garnered only 23 percent of New York City’s votes in the 2020 election, compared to Joe Biden’s 76 percent—he is choosing to hold the rally here rather than focusing on battleground states. For Trump, who thrives on symbolism and showmanship, the event represents a defiant stand in the heart of the nation’s media capital, where he was recently convicted in a criminal case.

Must Read: Japan’s Ruling Party To Likely Face Setback In Parliamentary Vote

New York is also Trump’s hometown, where he built his real estate empire, valued in the billions, on an inheritance likely worth hundreds of millions from his father, Fred Trump. His presence in the city’s celebrity scene and frequent appearances in tabloids helped him craft a national image here.

Despite his low support in New York City in 2020, recent polls indicate a close national race. Surveys by The New York Times and CNN last week showed Trump in a tie with Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris, while RealClear Polling’s aggregated data shows him with a narrow 0.1 percent lead.

Trump’s legal troubles, including his conviction in a hush money case and accusations of undermining democracy, have baffled Democrats as he maintains strong polling numbers. On Saturday, former First Lady Michelle Obama, campaigning alongside Harris in Michigan, questioned, “I gotta ask myself: why on earth is this race even close? I lay awake at night wondering: what in the world is going on?”

Trump’s supporters, more focused on issues like illegal immigration and inflation—up around 25 percent—appear undeterred by his legal challenges. In a Harvard poll by Harris, unrelated to the Vice President, 39 percent of registered voters cited inflation as their primary concern, followed by 35 percent who prioritized immigration.

Casting himself as a target of “political persecution,” Trump claimed, “These lawsuits are being run by the Department of Justice, the FBI. (President Joe) Biden is behind it all, believe it or not, and he proved that yesterday with his stupid statement,” referring to Biden’s rally remark, “Got to lock him up,” which the President later retracted.

To connect with working-class voters, Trump made appearances far removed from his usual elite circles, stopping by a barber shop in the Bronx to listen to local workers and even donning an apron to serve at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. He also held a rally of several thousand in May in South Bronx, one of the city’s poorest areas.

With the election just nine days away, Harris has made Trump’s character a focal point of her campaign, supported by Republicans like former Chief of Staff John Kelly, National Security Adviser John Bolton, and former Vice President Dick Cheney, who collectively stated he “lacks the character to lead the nation” and poses a “danger to democracy.”

Harris has chosen the Ellipse in Washington, DC, as the site for her campaign’s final argument on Tuesday. Her choice of the Ellipse, near the Capitol, recalls the January 6, 2021 rally where Trump supporters marched to the Capitol to disrupt the certification of Biden’s win.

“On Tuesday, October 29, with just one week until Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a major closing argument address in Washington on the Ellipse,” her campaign said in media guidance on Saturday.

The Ellipse will allow Harris to highlight her campaign’s key issue: that Trump threatens democracy and the Constitution. She recently labeled him a “fascist” during a CNN-hosted town hall.

This surge has intensified debate about legal responses to juvenile offenses, as Republicans highlight crime as a key issue ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
</excerpt>

Over the past seven years, New York has witnessed a more than 30% increase in crimes involving children, coinciding with a period of relaxed laws regarding juvenile offenses. As crime emerges as a significant issue in the 2024 US presidential election, Republicans rank it as the third most critical concern after the economy and immigration.

According to a report by The New York Times, the number of minors involved in major crimes, including murders, robberies, and assaults in New York City, surged by 37% between 2017 and 2023. The Times’ analysis revealed a 28% rise in felony assaults involving children, where serious injuries or deadly weapons were used. Additionally, robberies involving minors rose by 52%, and homicides involving youth increased by over 200%.

The report also highlighted that child victims of crime increased by 54% during the same period. Michael LiPetri, head of the New York Police Department’s crime strategies, noted, “most of what we see is youth-on-youth crime.” Despite the increase, crimes involving children still account for a relatively small portion of overall crime, comprising approximately 3.8%, consistent with figures from 2017.

These statistics have reignited discussions about the legal response to youth crime. Prior to 2017, many children accused of serious offenses were tried as adults; however, legislative changes now mandate that most 16- and 17-year-olds are processed in family courts. The sealing of family court rulings has made it challenging for police and prosecutors to present evidence of previous offenses when prosecuting repeat offenders, further complicating the issue of juvenile crime in New York.

Ryabkov did not disclose the specific date or the level of officials attending the meeting. The discussions come amid heightened nuclear tensions between Russia and the West, largely fueled by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a January 2022 joint statement, just weeks before the Ukraine war began, the “nuclear five” emphasized the importance of avoiding conflict between nuclear powers and reducing strategic risks. At the time, they collectively affirmed: “We affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.”

Utilizing 1,400 cameras and a coordinated effort between the UN, NYPD, and Secret Service, the event’s security measures ensure the safety of diplomats amid complex logistical challenges and potential threats.
</excerpt>

As world leaders gathered for the annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this week, a massive security operation ensured their safety. CNN and select media outlets were granted access to two high-level security rooms at the UN headquarters, revealing the complex and highly coordinated measures in place.

Within the security rooms, a large wall of monitors displayed footage from 1,400 cameras stationed across the UN grounds. These cameras, some discreetly placed, provide constant surveillance of doors, garages, hallways, and driveways. While it’s impossible to monitor all cameras simultaneously, security personnel vigilantly watch key areas. If an unauthorized individual attempts to enter, alarms are triggered, with an automated voice declaring, “Rejected! Rejected! Rejected!”

The operation is a collaboration between the UN, New York Police Department, Secret Service, and diplomatic security. This year, over 22,000 delegates attended UNGA, making the security task even more challenging. Motorcades shuttle leaders across Manhattan, often leading to significant traffic disruptions.

Despite the increasing criticism directed at the UN, security officials remain focused on maintaining a safe environment. According to US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, “We have pulled out all the stops,” and no major incidents involving heads of state have occurred so far.

Past security breaches, such as a postal worker firing shots at the UN building in 2002, serve as reminders of the ever-present threats. Nevertheless, UN officials remain committed to ensuring the safety of all attendees.

Pro-Palestinian Demonstrators Join the Protests

In a separate demonstration, over 300 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered near the New York Public Library, criticizing Netanyahu and calling for an end to US military aid to Israel. Many carried signs denouncing Netanyahu as a war criminal, calling for him to be tried at the International Criminal Court.

A Warm Welcome with Indian Traditions

Chef Khanna greeted the Ambanis in a uniquely Indian manner, involving them in a traditional ritual of lighting diyas—a gesture symbolizing continuity and celebration as Diwali approaches. The restaurant was adorned with six varieties of Isha’s favorite flowers, roses, and Ganga Jal, reflecting Khanna’s profound respect for Indian culture. Additionally, the evening featured an original Reliance logo crafted from marigold flowers, serving as a personalized tribute to the Ambani family legacy. Khanna expressed his gratitude on social media, stating, “It was an incredible privilege to welcome them to Bungalow and celebrate the spirit of India in a global setting.”

Bungalow: A Culinary Sensation in New York

Since its launch in March, Bungalow has made waves in New York’s culinary scene. Recently recognized with a prestigious three-star rating by The New York Times, it became the first Indian restaurant in nearly 25 years to achieve such an honor. The restaurant’s unique fusion of Indian flavors and British-inspired club ambiance has garnered popularity among both locals and international patrons.

Bungalow’s exclusivity is highlighted by its reservation system, which opens 15 days in advance, with seats selling out almost instantly. This overwhelming demand has solidified its reputation as one of the most sought-after dining venues in New York.

Celebrating India’s Culinary Diversity

At Bungalow, the Ambanis enjoyed dishes that showcased the richness of Indian cuisine, with influences spanning from Kashmir to Kerala. Khanna’s menu included signature offerings like Goan-inspired Shrimp Balchao Cones, Sindhi Aloo Tuk, and Yoghurt Kebabs wrapped in Kataifi. Catering to the Ambani family’s vegetarian preferences, Khanna also curated a selection of plant-based dishes to ensure a personalized dining experience. The restaurant’s cocktails were equally noteworthy, featuring unique concoctions such as the turmeric-infused Kaali Peeli Taxi and the masala chai-based Chai Paani, which added a nostalgic flair to the evening.

Mukesh and Isha Ambani’s visit to Bungalow underscores the growing global recognition of Indian cuisine. Under Vikas Khanna’s guidance, Bungalow has transformed into more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of India’s culinary heritage in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

The fallout comes on the heels of a hidden-camera recording that surfaced online, leading to significant public backlash.

Firing from SIGA Technologies

Dr. Varma, who previously served as the executive vice president and chief medical officer at the pharmaceutical company, was let go after podcaster Steven Crowder shared footage of him discussing his experiences during the pandemic. The video prompted widespread outrage given Varma’s prominent role in managing New York City’s COVID-19 response.

A History of Public Service

From April 2020 to May 2021, Varma acted as a senior public health adviser to then-Mayor Bill de Blasio, frequently appearing at press briefings to discuss the city’s pandemic measures. His contributions included promoting mask-wearing, regular testing, and advocating for vaccinations to combat the virus.

Controversial Remarks Caught on Camera

In the leaked video, Varma was heard boasting to an unnamed woman about attending underground sex parties during the city’s lockdown. He described these events as being filled with drugs, specifically mentioning MDMA, and acknowledged that they were not “COVID-friendly.”

“I was running the entire Covid response in the city,” Varma stated, reflecting on his high-stress role and how he coped by engaging in these parties. He even mentioned renting a hotel to host gatherings with friends and laughed off concerns about the consequences if his actions were made public.

Acknowledgment of Poor Judgment

In a statement following his termination, Varma took responsibility for his actions, admitting he did not exercise sound judgment during that time. He confirmed the authenticity of the video but emphasized that the conversations were private and had been “secretly recorded, spliced, diced, and taken out of context.”

While Varma chose not to comment further on his firing, his statements reflect an understanding of the serious implications his actions had on public trust during a critical time in New York City’s pandemic response.

The revelations about Dr. Varma serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by public officials during the unprecedented circumstances of the pandemic and the potential consequences of their private lives becoming public knowledge.

Japan has urged China to ensure the safety of its citizens, particularly children, and is increasing security at Japanese schools.
</excerpt>

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa announced on Monday that she will meet her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, during her visit to New York to discuss the recent fatal stabbing of a Japanese schoolboy in Shenzhen, China. The tragic incident, which occurred last week, has prompted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to call for an explanation and urge China to ensure the safety of Japanese citizens, especially children.

Kamikawa, speaking at Tokyo’s airport ahead of her trip to the United Nations General Assembly, expressed deep concern over the attack. “The recent incident in Shenzhen, where a Japanese schoolchild was killed, is extremely tragic. We will strongly urge China to clarify the facts and take measures to ensure the safety of Japanese citizens,” she stated, according to Japan’s foreign ministry. In response, Japan is allocating 43 million yen ($300,000) to enhance security at Japanese schools in China immediately.

Meanwhile, Japan’s vice foreign minister traveled to Beijing on Monday to address the issue directly with Chinese officials. China’s foreign ministry had earlier expressed “regret and sadness” over what it described as an isolated incident, emphasizing that such occurrences can happen in any country.

Reports indicate that the victim was a 10-year-old Japanese national. Chinese police have detained a 44-year-old man as the prime suspect. Although it is unclear if the attack was politically motivated, it took place on September 18, a historically sensitive date marking the 1931 “Mukden incident,” often remembered in China as a day of national humiliation.

This tragic event follows another knife attack in June in Suzhou, where a Japanese mother and child were injured. Relations between Japan and China remain tense, with ongoing territorial disputes and Japan’s strengthening security ties with the US. However, Beijing recently announced it would gradually resume importing Japanese seafood after suspending imports last year over concerns related to the Fukushima nuclear plant’s water release.

</excerpt>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in New York to participate in sessions at the U.N. General Assembly, according to a report from the Ukrinform state news agency on Sunday.

Zelenskyy visit to the U.N. General Assembly in New York aligns with U.S. plans to finalize a $375 million military aid package for Ukraine, marking a departure from the smaller aid packages that have been provided in recent months for Kyiv’s military efforts.

Zelenskyy is set to present a “victory plan” regarding Ukraine’s war against Russia during separate meetings with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday.

He also hopes to meet with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine as a waste of money and has been noncommittal about wanting Ukraine to win. Trump indicated he will likely meet with Zelenskyy this week, although no specific date has been confirmed.

Trump will be running against Harris in the U.S. election on November 5.

Zelenskyy has frequently expressed concerns about a lack of weapons, particularly essential 155-millimeter artillery shells produced at the Scranton plant. These worries have intensified as Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in anticipation of the crucial winter months.

Two U.S. officials informed Reuters on Friday that an aid package, expected to be announced this week, will include patrol boats, more ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems, 155- and 105-millimeter artillery rounds, spare parts, and other weaponry.
