His progressive agenda includes rent freezes, free transit, universal childcare, and immigrant protections.
</excerpt>

Zohran Mamdani, the 33-year-old Democrat, is set to make history as the first Muslim mayor of New York City. Until Wednesday morning (June 25), Mamdani was holding a strong lead against former Governor Andrew Cuomo with 95% of the votes counted. His candidacy has gained a lot of attention for its liberal leaning, particularly from immigrant and working-class communities, which differentiates him from incumbent Mayor Eric Adams.

Solving the Affordability Crisis

At the heart of Mamdani’s campaign is his pledge to combat the affordability crisis that grips the city. Speaking to the BBC at a recent event, he said, “This is a city where one in four of its people are living in poverty, a city where 500,000 kids go to sleep hungry every night. And ultimately, it’s a city that is in danger of losing that which makes it so special.”

To solve this, he has put forward opening up city-operated grocery stores, freezing rent on all rent-stabilized units, increasing enforcement for landlords, and setting up a Social Housing Development Agency that would be responsible for building 200,000 subsidized homes within three years.

Increasing Community Support and Education

Mamdani is also campaigning for universal childcare for children between six weeks and five years of age. In education, he vows to abolish tuition fees at public universities and withdraw property tax exemptions from private universities. He also plans to set up a Department of Community Safety to improve access to mental health care, community services, and housing assistance.

Funding Through Wealth Taxes

To finance these ambitious proposals, Mamdani is calling for a 2% city income tax on those earning more than $1 million and higher taxes on corporations. This money would go towards principal initiatives, such as universal childcare, free CUNY and SUNY tuition, expanded tenant legal services, fare-free public transportation, and city-subsidized grocery stores.

Public Transit, Climate, and Infrastructure

Mamdani is going to make riding all of the MTA buses free and place a freeze on subway prices.These policies will draw ridership for public transportation, fight traffic congestion, promote environmental sustainability, and improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

Immigration, LGBTQ+ Rights, and Controversial Views on Israel

Mamdani has been firm on international and social matters. Mamdani has been a supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and called Israel’s behavior “genocide.” He is of the opinion that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must be brought to book according to international law. Although he is ready to accept Israel’s right to exist, Mamdani believes in the application of international legal norms. He also used to bring legislation to revoke tax-free status from U.S.-based charities that provide funding for Israeli settlements.

At home, Mamdani is a vocal advocate of LGBTQ+ rights. He promises to establish an LGBTQ+ Affairs Office focused on the community, increase access to gender-affirming care, and extend sanctuary protections to undocumented immigrants. His agenda also entails increased legal assistance and language assistance for immigrant communities.

Mamdani has boasted openly about his Muslim heritage during the campaign, even publishing an entire campaign video in Urdu.

With Tuesday’s (June 24) election now a success, Mamdani is waiting for the official confirmation. If so, he will be sworn in this November, a historic occasion not just for New York City, but also for Muslim and immigrant representation in US politics.

</excerpt>

In a jaw-dropping moment that could only happen in New York, a man was spotted cycling through Greenpoint, Brooklyn, with an actual refrigerator balanced on his head. The surreal sight, caught on camera, has gone viral online and stunned thousands of viewers across social media platforms.

As reported by The New York Post, the man behind the fridge-balancing stunt is none other than local daredevil and stuntman Leh-Boy Gabriel Davis. He was seen pedaling a Citi Bike down Nassau Avenue toward Dobbins Street while casually balancing the full-sized fridge like it was no big deal.

“That is wild!” exclaimed the person filming the video, clearly struggling to believe their own eyes.

Turns out, Davis is no stranger to turning heads on NYC streets. Back in 2023, he had already made headlines for riding a bike while balancing a sofa on his head — a stunt that sparked both disbelief and a standing ovation from the internet.

Reddit Reacts: “Bro Never Skipped Neck Day”

The video was shared on Reddit by a user named Justin_Godfrey and has already racked up over 32,000 upvotes and hundreds of hilarious comments.

One Redditor declared, “This is necks level.”
Another joked, “Give this man a delivery job immediately.”
Someone marveled, “I can’t even lift a fridge with two people helping — how is this possible?”
While another quipped, “Bro never skipped neck day.”

Of course, no viral moment is complete without a New York nod. One user simply wrote, “Only in New York.” And yet another crowned Davis the “Brooklyn’s balancing king.”

Some users even likened the act to a scene from a video game, calling him a “real-life GTA player.” Others speculated whether the fridge was empty, full, or perhaps magically weightless.

Only in New York

As one commenter perfectly summed it up:
“New York never disappoints when it comes to weird sightings.” And with Davis’s jaw-dropping balance, this bizarre moment may just go down in NYC’s ever-growing hall of viral street legends.

</excerpt>

New York: New York City on Wednesday observed the anniversary of the 1993 bombing at the original World Trade Center, marking the first attempted attack by Islamic extremists to bring down the twin towers using 1,200 pounds of explosives hidden in a rented van.

The explosion on February 26 of that year claimed six lives, including that of a pregnant woman.

Family members of the victims gathered at the Trade Center’s memorial plaza, placing flowers and reading the names of those who lost their lives in the attack.

At exactly 12:18 p.m., the time when the van detonated in the underground parking garage, a bell rang in remembrance. “We gather to pay tribute to the innocent people killed and the more than 1,000 people who were injured that day,” said Beth Hillman, president and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. She added, “It is our steadfast mission and a great privilege to preserve the history of this tragic event, to honor those individuals who died, to stand in shared grief with you, their family and friends, and share with the world their stories, the courage of first responders and the resilience of those who survived.”

Earlier in the day, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the Trade Center and lost four employees in the 1993 attack, held a memorial Mass at St. Peter’s Church in their honor.

Six individuals, including the alleged mastermind Ramzi Yousef, were convicted for their roles in the bombing, which carved out a 150-foot-wide crater in the Trade Center’s parking garage. While the site was repaired, the attacks did not stop—extremists returned on September 11, 2001, ultimately bringing down the towers and claiming nearly 3,000 lives. Yousef’s uncle, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, later identified himself as the principal architect behind 9/11.

A fountain built to commemorate the victims of the 1993 attack was lost when the towers collapsed. However, their names are now engraved on the same memorial plaza where two massive waterfalls stand in place of the fallen skyscrapers.

Four Senior New York City Officials Plan Resignations Amid Controversy Over Mayor Adams

<excerpt>Four deputy mayors have expressed intent to resign, escalating pressure on Mayor Eric Adams following federal charges. Tensions rise as officials consider distancing themselves from his administration.
</excerpt>

Four of New York Mayor Eric Adams deputies are said to be resigning in the next few days, a major change in support for the beleaguered mayor. The deputies resigned following President Donald Trump’s Justice Department’s decision to dismiss criminal charges against Adams on the grounds that he is in line with Trump’s immigration policies. The move to request the dismissal of charges has been controversial, and it has led to en masse resignations of Justice Department officials who were against the request.

Adams’ office would not comment on the developments at first, but sources say that the four deputies have already notified the mayor of their plans to resign. They are First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer, Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams-Isom, and Chauncey Parker, the deputy mayor for public safety. The officials informed the mayor on Sunday that they planned to leave through a Zoom meeting, sources reported, while some report Adams tried to encourage them to have second thoughts.

The resignations come after a rocky time for Adams, who has been under mounting pressure since his indictment in September on several counts. The federal prosecutors claim he accepted travel benefits from Turkish officials and political contributions from foreign sources in return for serving Turkish interests. Adams has protested his innocence and entered pleas of not guilty to the charges. In spite of demands for his resignation, he has insisted he will not resign.

The case has been made even more complicated by the Justice Department’s motion to drop the charges, which has triggered further conflicts within the administration. US District Judge Dale Ho is still required to sign off on the motion before any other step can be initiated.

Drivers entering the congestion zone south of Central Park will face charges up to $9 per day during peak hours. Despite opposition from President-elect Donald Trump and local politicians, the plan aims to reduce vehicle traffic and fund public transit improvements. The scheme has faced political disputes and legal challenges but is now in effect.
</excerpt>

New York City has introduced the United States’ first congestion charge scheme to tackle its notorious traffic issues. Drivers entering the congestion zone south of Central Park, which includes iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Wall Street, will face charges of up to $9 (£7) per day during peak hours. Rates for other vehicles range from $2.25 during off-peak hours to $21.60 for larger trucks and tourist buses.

The congestion charge plan has sparked significant opposition. US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to dismantle the scheme upon taking office later this month. Congressman Mike Lawler is representing a district just north of New York City. He has also urged Trump to end what he called an “absurd congestion pricing cash grab.”

Political Disputes and Legal Hurdles

The congestion charge comes after years of political disputes and legal challenges. Initially proposed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul two years ago, the scheme underwent revisions following resistance from commuters and businesses. Neighboring New Jersey filed a last-minute legal challenge to block the scheme but was unsuccessful, clearing the way for its implementation.

Resistance from Taxi Drivers and Businesses

Taxi drivers’ associations and various commuter groups have criticized the charges, citing financial burdens. Businesses in Manhattan have also expressed concerns over potential negative impacts on customers and deliveries.

Despite the backlash, the congestion charge aims to reduce vehicle traffic in one of the world’s busiest urban areas while generating billions of dollars to improve New York’s public transit system. With Trump promising to intervene, the scheme’s future may depend on ongoing political dynamics and public response.

Impact on New York City’s Traffic and Transit

The congestion charge scheme will significantly reduce traffic congestion in New York City, making it easier for residents and visitors to navigate the city. The city will use the revenue generated from the charges to enhance its public transit infrastructure, providing a more efficient and reliable transportation system for everyone.

Congestion pricing began just after midnight on Sunday, giving the Metropolitan Transportation Authority enough time to work out any kinks on a day when traffic is lighter than usual.

Key Locations Affected

Drivers entering the congestion zone south of Central Park, including Times Square, SoHo, and the theater district, will pay a fee. Most passenger cars will be charged $9 per day during peak hours and $2.25 during off-peak times. Motorcyclists will pay $4.50 during peak hours and $1.05 off-peak.

Fees will be collected primarily through the E-ZPass system. Certain exemptions apply, such as vehicles carrying people with disabilities and authorized emergency vehicles. Low-income drivers can receive a 50% discount after 10 trips in a month.

Future of the Congestion Charge Scheme

As the congestion charge scheme takes effect, its success will be closely monitored by city officials and the public. The outcome of this initiative could set a precedent for other major cities in the United States facing similar traffic challenges. The ongoing political dynamics and public response will play a crucial role in determining the scheme’s long-term viability.

A devastating mass shooting at Amazura nightclub in Queens, New York, has left at least 11 people injured, according to reports from The Spectator Index. The shooting, which occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day, has prompted a large police response, with officers from the New York Police Department (NYPD) arriving at the scene. While authorities have yet to release official details on the incident, sources confirmed that multiple victims were taken to local hospitals.

Victims Transported to Nearby Hospitals

The injured victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities, including Long Island Jewish Hospital and Cohen Children’s Medical Center, for treatment. The severity of their injuries is not yet fully known, but the attack has prompted widespread concern across the local community.

A Deadly Coincidence: New Year’s Day Attacks

The shooting at Amazura nightclub coincided with another horrific incident in New Orleans, where 15 people were killed, and more than 30 were injured when a vehicle rammed into a crowd on Bourbon Street. Authorities have not confirmed whether the two attacks are connected, but both events have raised questions about public safety.

Confrontation with Suspect Leads to Fatal Police Shooting

The suspect involved in the mass shooting was reportedly confronted by the police. According to sources from The New York Times, the 42-year-old suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, engaged in a gunfire exchange with law enforcement officers. The standoff ended with the suspect being fatally shot during the confrontation.

Investigations Ongoing

The NYPD has launched an investigation into the shooting at Amazura nightclub, but no further details about the suspect or the motive have been disclosed. Authorities are working to understand the full scope of the attack and the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. Meanwhile, the local community remains on edge, grappling with the shock and impact of the violent incident.

The attack follows a spate of violent incidents over the New Year’s period, with both the shooting in Queens and the vehicle rampage in New Orleans highlighting ongoing concerns over public safety and security.

Accusations Against the Alexander Brothers

Oren, Alon, and Tal Alexander have been accused of engaging in sex trafficking and drug abuse for more than a decade. According to federal prosecutors, the brothers used “deception, fraud, and coercion” to manipulate women into attending events or parties, often promising romantic relationships or covering their travel expenses. Once at these events, victims were reportedly drugged and sexually assaulted, with some being physically restrained and unable to escape due to the drugs administered to them.

The brothers, well-known for their high-end real estate dealings in New York and Miami, have been facing multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault since June. While Oren and Tal have been implicated in criminal charges, Alon is facing civil allegations of sexual misconduct, Bloomberg reported.

Drugging Victims and Using Dating Apps

According to the indictment, the Alexander brothers often met their victims through dating apps, social events, and bars. They also employed party promoters to help find women. Prosecutors noted that women were given drugs like cocaine, psychedelic mushrooms, and GHB, which caused them to lose control of their bodies, making it impossible for them to resist or escape the assaults.

In some disturbing instances, the indictment claims the brothers physically restrained their victims while raping them and ignored their desperate pleas for the assaults to stop. One case from December 2016, involving a woman invited to a barbecue at Alon Alexander’s Miami Beach apartment, has been described as a “gang rape” by Florida prosecutors. The victim found herself alone with the Alexander brothers and another relative, after being told that other guests would be present.

Investigations and Further Victims Expected

US Attorney Damian Williams stated that this conduct was “heinous” and confirmed that the investigation was ongoing. Prosecutors have hinted that further charges may be filed as additional victims could come forward. “They were not acting alone. We will continue investigating,” Williams said at a news conference.

Bail Denied and Flight Risk Concerns

In a separate plea, federal prosecutors in New York and Miami requested that the Alexander brothers be denied bail, citing their wealth and connections as significant flight risks. The brothers are known to have extensive ties in the real estate world, making their release a serious concern for authorities. Prosecutors also noted that the brothers had reportedly engaged in sexual violence since high school, according to statements filed as part of the bail request.

Real Estate Empire in Shambles

The charges against the Alexander brothers have rocked their real estate empire. The brothers, who co-founded the brokerage firm “Official” in 2022, have been forced to step down following the allegations. The company has since lost several key projects and staff members. The Alexander brothers first gained prominence working with real estate giant Douglas Elliman, brokering high-profile deals for celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Tommy Hilfiger, and Liam Gallagher.

The arrest of Oren, Alon, and Tal Alexander has sent shockwaves through both the real estate world and the wider public. With the investigation still ongoing, the full extent of their alleged crimes may soon come to light, and more victims could emerge as the case continues to unfold.

In the past year, a 74-foot Norway spruce at the iconic center made waves with 50,000 lights during a Wednesday night lighting ceremony that kicked off the holiday season.

Kelly Clarkson was the host of this year’s ceremony, just as last year. She introduced the showstopping lineup that boasted performances from the Backstreet Boys and Jennifer Hudson. The tree is a small-town find from Massachusetts and topped with a breathtaking Swarovski star holding 3 million crystals.. Estimated to be 70 years of age, the giant weighs 11 tonnes and arrived in New York last month after being donated by the owners, following a request made in 2020 by the head gardener of the Rockefeller Center.

Located above the Rockefeller Center ice-skating rink, this year’s popular holiday attraction will shine aglow through mid-January, with 24-hour lighting on Christmas Day. After the holiday season is over, the tree will be turned into lumber for Habitat for Humanity. Visitors can ice-skate under the tree and enjoy the holiday ambience.

The Rockefeller Center tree-lighting ceremony, which dates back to 1933 and has been held every year since, lasts for two hours and officially commences the Christmas celebrations. The official Rockefeller Center account on X posted the video of the tree lighting ceremony this year, captioned, “The 2024 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is officially sparkling on Center Plaza.”

The social media was full of reactions as people shared videos and photos of the lit-up tree. Among the users who commented was one saying, “The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has been lit,” and another who simply said, “Tonight’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting 2024 New York City.“The post got several likes, comments, and emojis with some users expressing their appreciation by writing, “Beautiful,” while others wished they could go for the event by saying, “Wish I could be there but no I can’t make it sadly. All the best towards your Christmas celebration.”

</excerpt>

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a beloved American tradition, is set to mark its 100th anniversary in 2024. First held in 1924, this iconic event has evolved into a grand spectacle enjoyed by millions across the country, signaling the start of the holiday season. With its signature giant balloons, festive floats, marching bands, and musical performances, the parade continues to captivate audiences both in person and via television.

A Century of Festivities: From Humble Beginnings to Global Icon

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began as a modest celebration organized by Macy’s department store employees, many of whom were immigrants from Europe. The inaugural event, which took place in 1924, featured store workers marching to Herald Square in colorful costumes, accompanied by professional bands, floats, and animals from the Central Park Zoo. Santa Claus made his first appearance during this event, earning the title of “King of the Kiddies” on the Macy’s balcony. Despite limited media coverage, the parade’s success led to its annual continuation, eventually growing into the global event it is today.

Parade Details: When and Where to Watch

In 2024, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will take place on Thursday, November 28, beginning at 8:30 AM (local time). The parade will last for approximately three hours, ending at noon. The route will start at West 77th Street and Central Park West, traveling along Central Park South, and turning onto 6th Avenue before concluding at Macy’s Herald Square. This route provides an incredible view of the giant balloons floating high above the crowd.

Live Streaming and Broadcast Information

For those unable to attend in person, the parade will be broadcast live on NBC from 8:30 AM to noon, hosted by Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, and Al Roker. An encore broadcast will air at 2 PM. Additionally, viewers can stream the parade live on Peacock, making it accessible to a global audience. The broadcast will feature coverage of the parade, along with musical performances and celebrity interviews.

Honoring 100 Years of Tradition

As Macy’s celebrates the 100th anniversary of its Thanksgiving Day Parade, the event will pay tribute to its history while introducing new floats, balloons, and performances. The parade continues to embody the joy and magic of the holiday season, bringing families together, celebrating cultural diversity, and sharing the spirit of Thanksgiving with viewers around the world.

</excerpt>

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported an outbreak of a rare and highly contagious fungal infection in New York, known as “jock itch.” The infection, caused by the Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII (TMVII) fungus, results in an itchy, scaly rash that can appear on the trunk, groin, genitals, or face. Since the first reported case in June, four more cases have been confirmed.

TMVII spreads primarily through sexual contact and can lead to severe symptoms, including inflammation and a painful rash. In some cases, the condition may also cause secondary bacterial infections.

According to a CDC statement, all four currently affected patients are cisgender men between the ages of 30 and 39, with recent sexual contact among men. Two of the men reported direct sexual contact, while the other cases have no known epidemiological links. One patient is a sex worker, and another reported recent travel to Europe, while the others reported no recent international travel.

The CDC has alerted healthcare professionals, particularly dermatologists, to recognize TMVII as a possible sexually transmitted infection. The infection, known medically as tinea cruris, is treatable with antifungal medications, although full recovery may take several months. The use of antifungal creams, ointments, or powders can help manage symptoms within 2 to 4 weeks, though extended treatment may be necessary in some cases.

However, officials caution that jaywalking remains risky, especially for tourists unfamiliar with city traffic. Authorities urge pedestrians to use crosswalks and stay alert as the law goes into effect in February.
</excerpt>

New York City, often romanticized for its pizza, Central Park strolls, and bustling streets, has long included jaywalking in its list of urban customs. For years, crossing against traffic signals or outside crosswalks was illegal. Now, with new legislation passed by the City Council in September and coming into effect this past weekend, jaywalking is officially decriminalized. Mayor Eric Adams allowed the bill to pass without signature or veto, marking a major shift in the city’s street safety rules.

Jaywalking had been illegal in New York since 1958, and violators risked fines of up to $250. The city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) reported that jaywalking remains risky, noting that nearly 34% of pedestrian fatalities over the past five years resulted from crossing outside signals or mid-block. Despite the law, officials urge pedestrians to remain vigilant.

The bill, championed by Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, was passed with the goal of promoting racial justice. Narcisse highlighted concerns over discriminatory enforcement, pointing out that in 2023, over 92% of jaywalking tickets were issued to Black and Latino residents. With this change, Narcisse argues that police can now concentrate on “true public safety efforts.”

However, Liz Garcia, a spokesperson for the mayor, reiterated that crossing against signals remains dangerous, particularly for tourists unaccustomed to New York’s busy streets. In 2023, New York welcomed 62.2 million visitors, many unfamiliar with local jaywalking practices. David C. Schwebel, a psychology professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who studies pedestrian safety, cautioned that different cultural norms can heighten risks. For instance, in some Asian countries, it’s common to cross one lane at a time, a behavior that could prove hazardous in New York traffic.

Officials advise all pedestrians to make use of crosswalks and signals where possible, and to remain attentive when crossing streets, especially at night or in poor visibility. With the law officially going into effect in February, New York City is redefining the line between cultural practices and safety precautions for residents and visitors alike.

</excerpt>

While Prince Harry faces legal struggles regarding his security arrangements with The Firm, he seems to be in good standing with US authorities on the matter.

On Wednesday, the Duke of Sussex visited the well-known East Side Ink tattoo shop in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The shop is famous for its celebrity clientele, including the original Avengers stars Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, and Jeremy Renner, all of whom got matching tattoos by artist Joshua Lord.

However, insiders revealed to Page Six that Harry didn’t get a tattoo. Instead, he was there for a promotional event related to an upcoming project. His visit to the shop lasted just over an hour, beginning at around 1 pm.

Prince Harry’s Security Detail in NYC

Photos shared by the media showed Harry, 40, accompanied by a small security team during his visit. One of the security officers was reportedly a New York Police Department official assigned to him during his time in New York City. Additionally, two NYPD cars provided extra security, positioning themselves in front and behind the tattoo shop.

This heightened security follows a “near-catastrophic” two-hour car chase in 2023 when aggressive paparazzi pursued Harry, Meghan Markle, and her mother, Doria Ragland, in Manhattan, as reported by The New York Post.

Solo Adventures Continue for Prince Harry

Reports last month suggested that Harry would return to New York City in September. His representative confirmed that this solo trip aims to support various causes he is passionate about, such as African Parks, The HALO Trust, The Diana Award, and Travalyst.

His visit coincides with the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week and Climate Week. Beyond New York, Harry will head to the UK later this month to present an award at the annual WellChild Awards on September 30.

Despite the busy schedule, Prince Harry‘s trip wasn’t all about work. His visit to East Side Ink was part of a fun-filled day in New York. Earlier in the day, he reportedly filmed a segment for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, visiting a haunted house alongside the late-night host. The prince wore the same outfit for both his tattoo shop and television appearances.

The charges involve providing material support to terrorism.
</excerpt>

On September 3, 2024, the US Justice Department announced criminal charges against Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, in relation to the deadly attack on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023. The charges, filed in federal court in New York City, include conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, resulting in death.

Criminal Charges Unveiled

Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed the charges in a video statement, emphasizing the US government’s commitment to targeting all aspects of Hamas’ operations. “The charges unsealed today are just one part of our effort to target every aspect of Hamas’ operations,” Garland said. “These actions will not be our last.”

Key Figures Charged

Yahya Sinwar, the top Hamas leader and a central figure on Israel’s most-wanted list, is among those charged. Sinwar, who has been in hiding in Gaza’s tunnels for most of the past year, is accused of playing a significant role in the planning and execution of the attack. The criminal complaint also targets other prominent Hamas members:

– Ismail Haniyeh: Former head of Hamas, who was killed in Iran.
– Marwan Issa: Deputy leader of Hamas’ armed wing in Gaza and a key planner of the attack.
– Khaled Mashaal: Former leader of Hamas and another deputy to Haniyeh.
– Mohammed al-Masri and Ali Baraka: Additional Hamas leaders implicated in the conspiracy.

Implications and Next Steps

The indictment represents a major step in the US’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and hold accountable those responsible for attacks on its allies. The charges signal the US’s determination to disrupt and dismantle terrorist operations globally.

The Justice Department has indicated that these charges are part of a broader strategy to address terrorism and its sponsors. Garland’s statement reflects the seriousness with which the US is pursuing these cases and underscores the continuing focus on combating global terrorism.

When it comes to affluence, New York City stands unchallenged as the world’s richest city. According to a recent report by Henley & Partners, New York boasts the highest concentration of millionaires globally, with approximately 349,500 residents holding millionaire status. This represents a remarkable 40% increase in high-net-worth individuals from 2012 to 2022, despite the pandemic-induced migration of some wealthy residents.

A Hub of Wealth and Opportunity

New York’s staggering wealth is evident in its demographics: for every 24 residents, one is a millionaire. The city’s total population of around 8.2 million is complemented by 744 individuals whose fortunes exceed $100 million. This financial hub is home to the world’s largest stock exchanges, including Nasdaq and NYSE, and features some of the highest residential property values, particularly on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue.

Economic Growth and Global Impact

Henley & Partners’ report, which evaluates cities based on resident millionaires, economic heritage, and global influence, highlights New York’s dominance in global wealth. This assessment reflects not only the city’s economic prowess but also its significant role in global finance and enterprise.

Other Wealthy Contenders

Following New York, the list of the world’s richest cities includes Northern California, Tokyo, Singapore, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong, and Beijing, ranked second through tenth respectively. These cities have also seen notable increases in wealth, driven by robust economic growth, infrastructural development, and rising residential values.

A Snapshot of Global Wealth

The report underscores a growing trend in wealth accumulation across major cities worldwide, shaped by their economic development, business opportunities, and the rise of both millionaires and billionaires. New York remains at the forefront of this trend, exemplifying the pinnacle of global wealth and financial success.

Critics, including US-based Muslim organizations, argue it glorifies a mosque’s destruction in India. Defenders see it as a celebration of Hindu heritage and free speech. Mayor Adams stresses the parade’s focus on cultural diversity.
</excerpt>

Dispute Over Float’s Symbolism

A planned float depicting a Hindu temple has sparked significant controversy ahead of the upcoming India Day Parade in New York City. The float, which portrays a temple dedicated to Lord Ram, has drawn criticism from several groups who argue that it is anti-Muslim and glorifies the destruction of a mosque in India.

Background of the Temple Dispute

The temple featured on the float represents a site in Ayodhya, India, which is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. This site has been a focal point of intense conflict between Hindus and Muslims. In the early 1990s, a mosque that stood there, known as the Babri Masjid, was demolished by a Hindu fundamentalist mob, leading to widespread riots and significant loss of life.

Opposition from US Organizations

Several US-based organizations, including the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Indian American Muslim Council, and Hindus for Human Rights, have voiced strong objections to the float. They have sent a letter to New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, condemning the float as a symbol of hate and an attempt to conflate Hindu nationalist ideology with Indian identity.

Defenders of the Float

In response, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, the group organizing the float, has defended its depiction as a celebration of Hindu religious heritage. They argue that the float aims to honor a significant figure in Hinduism and is an expression of cultural pride. The Hindu American Foundation has supported this view, emphasizing that the float represents an exercise of free speech.

City’s Stance on Free Speech

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has stressed that the parade’s focus is on celebrating cultural diversity, and he has warned that any element promoting hate will not be tolerated. However, Adams’ office later stated that the First Amendment rights prevent the city from altering or denying permits for floats based on their content.

Context of Rising Tensions

The controversy occurs in a broader context of rising tensions related to religious identity and nationalism in both the US and India. In recent years, under Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there have been increased reports of violence and discrimination against minorities, a situation Modi’s administration disputes.

Event Details

The India Day Parade is scheduled to take place three days after India’s Independence Day, aiming to showcase the cultural diversity of India’s various communities.

The allegations against Gupta revolve around a purported murder-for-hire plot targeting Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

According to reports, Gupta’s case has drawn significant attention due to its international implications. The United States authorities have accused him of being involved in a conspiracy aimed at Pannun, a prominent figure in the Sikh separatist movement. The allegations suggest a complex web of international intrigue and legal ramifications.

The visuals from outside the Federal Court House captured a flurry of activity as Gupta, presumably in custody, was escorted amid heightened security measures. Spectators and media personnel gathered outside, reflecting the gravity of the accusations and the public interest surrounding the case.

Gupta’s legal representatives have not yet issued a statement regarding the allegations. The case is expected to unfold in the coming days as both sides prepare their arguments and evidence.

The accusation against an Indian national in a foreign court has sparked discussions about diplomatic implications and legal procedures. As the case progresses, it is likely to attract further scrutiny both domestically and internationally.

New York City is bracing for an unusual and alarming potential invasion: giant, venomous flying spiders known as Joro spiders. Having already made their presence felt in several southern U.S. states, experts warn that these airborne arachnids might swarm into the Big Apple this summer.

Joro Spiders: What You Need to Know

Joro spiders (Trichonephila clavata), native to Asia, are recognizable by their bright yellow and black markings. Female spiders can grow up to eight inches long, while males are about half that size. Their unique ability to glide through the air using silk threads has earned them the nickname “flying spiders.”

How Did They Arrive in the U.S.?

Originating from Japan, China, Taiwan, and South Korea, Joro spiders likely arrived in the U.S. via cargo shipments around 2010. They have since adapted to various environments, spreading across the Southeast. Reports from the nonprofit group INaturalist indicate their presence in states like Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Oklahoma. Researchers predict their potential spread to the Great Lakes region, Canada, and possibly the Northwest U.S. and Mexico.

Why New York?

Andy Davis, a researcher at the University of Georgia, explains that New York’s latitude closely matches that of East Asian regions where Joro spiders thrive, making the city an ideal habitat. The spiders have shown adaptability to urban environments, and their high metabolism and heart rate enable them to survive in colder climates.

Are Joro Spiders Dangerous?

Despite their intimidating appearance, Joro spiders pose no harm to humans or pets. Their venom is only effective on insects caught in their webs, and their bites are comparable to bee stings. However, scientists are still studying their potential impact on local ecosystems and agriculture.

As New Yorkers await the possible arrival of these spiders, experts emphasize that while they may be unsettling, they are not a direct threat to human safety.

</excerpt>

Michael Cohen, the former lawyer for Donald Trump, testified against the former US President on Monday in a New York City courtroom, admitting that he “lied and bullied” on behalf of Trump, according to Al Jazeera. Cohen, a key prosecution witness in the case, stated, “It was what was needed in order to accomplish the task,” during one of the trial’s most anticipated days.

Prosecutors have accused Trump of falsifying business records related to hush-money payments made before the 2016 election, which Trump won. The case centers on a $130,000 payment Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep her from speaking publicly about a 2006 sexual encounter she claims to have had with Trump. Trump has denied the encounter and dismissed the charges as “politically motivated.” Despite the trial, Trump continues to campaign for a return to the White House.

Cohen, 57, testified that his role as a “fixer” for Trump involved handling “whatever he wanted.” Rather than functioning as a traditional corporate lawyer, Cohen reported directly to Trump and was not part of the Trump Organization’s general counsel’s office. He also testified that Trump was “furious” when Daniels was “shopping” her story about their alleged encounter. Cohen quoted Trump saying, “This is a disaster, a total disaster. Women are going to hate me,” and “Guys, they think it’s cool, but this is going to be a disaster for the campaign.”

This occurred during a critical moment for Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, following the leak of an Access Hollywood tape where Trump boasted about “grabbing women’s genitals,” which left his campaign scrambling to manage the fallout just weeks before Election Day.

Cohen provided detailed testimony about the hush-money payment he made to Daniels, central to the prosecution’s case. He testified that Trump urged him to delay the payment until after the election, believing the story would be irrelevant by then. In October 2016, as Daniels’s story was about to break, Cohen said Trump told him to proceed with the payment. “He expressed to me: Just do it,” Cohen testified, recounting that Trump advised him to coordinate with Trump Organization executive Allen Weisselberg, who was reluctant to pay. Cohen then decided to cover the payment himself, saying, “I ultimately said, ‘OK, I’ll pay it,'” and Trump promised him, “You’ll get the money back.”

Cohen also testified about a 2015 meeting with Trump and David Pecker, then-publisher of the National Enquirer, where they discussed using the tabloid to support Trump’s candidacy and attack his rivals. According to Cohen, Trump instructed Pecker to inform Cohen of any negative press, and the three agreed that Pecker would try to suppress damaging stories.

Trump’s defense team is expected to challenge Cohen’s credibility during cross-examination later this week, portraying him as a “liar who cannot be trusted,” according to Al Jazeera. Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to federal charges related to the hush-money payments and lying to Congress, for which he was sentenced to three years in prison.
