</excerpt>

India will not implement a trade ban on Turkey in the near future despite increased demands from domestic industries. The reason is India’s $2.73 billion trade surplus with Turkey. Even though New Delhi is limiting Turkish participation in strategic infrastructure projects for national security concerns, officials are being cautious not to jeopardize trade relationships. Engineering goods, chemical, and electronics exporters will suffer if India bans trade.

Meanwhile, apple producers and marble manufacturers are calling for immediate action to protect their livelihoods. Turkey’s recent pro-Pakistan policy has further heightened the debate.

Surplus Drives Trade Cautiousness

India sells much more to Turkey than it buys. The excess is primarily industrial goods such as machinery, electronics, and chemicals. These have increased steadily for five years. Conversely, Turkey only exports a few items to India—primarily apples, dry fruits, gold, and marble.

This deficit is in favor of India. To shut off trade would be a loss for Indian sellers compared to Turkish sellers.

Domestic Industries Raise Alarm

Despite the over-supply, industry voices are increasing. Apple producers from Himachal Pradesh recently pressed the Commerce Ministry to prohibit Turkish apples. They argue that Turkish apples, usually subsidised, pour into the Indian market and undercut home prices. Farmers allege apples aren’t simply fruits but the economic spine of their state.

At the same time, Udaipur marble processors have approached the PMO. They are seeking restrictions on Turkish marble imports, accusing them of unfair pricing and threat to local production.

Geopolitical Tensions Mount

The move comes against the backdrop of deteriorating geopolitical relations. Following India’s Operation Sindoor against terror bases in Pakistan and PoK, Turkey had a robust support of Islamabad. President Tayyip Erdogan received Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif at Istanbul last month. He promised closer defence and transport relations between the two countries.

Turkey also criticized India’s military attacks after the Pahalgam terror attack. Erdogan’s vociferous backing of Pakistan has angered New Delhi, which is now holding internal debates on how to limit Turkish exposure.

Govt Remains Cautious

The top official conceded to receiving some representations calling for an import ban. But the government is balancing the economic implication. “A trade ban would convey a geopolitical signal, but we need to safeguard our exporters as well,” the official said.

For the time being, New Delhi seems to be poised to restrict Turkish access to strategic projects while maintaining trade channels open—for its own economic equilibria.

</excerpt>

New Delhi: In a shocking display of inhumanity, an appalling incident took place in a residential society in Greater Noida. A CCTV recording captured the disturbing sequence of events at the Gaur City 2 apartment complex, revealing a horrifying act of aggression.

The footage shows a woman forcibly dragging a young boy out of an elevator and assaulting him after he requested her not to bring her unleashed dog inside. The distressing visuals from the CCTV footage highlight the shocking turn of events that unfolded in the residential complex.

According to the footage, the incident involved an eight-year-old boy who was alone in the elevator after returning from his tuition class. As the lift door opened on one of the floors, the woman was seen standing outside with her dog, which was not on a leash. The video captures the boy pleading with her not to allow the dog inside without a leash. However, instead of complying, the woman suddenly lunged at the child, forcibly dragging him out of the elevator. The lift doors then closed, and she allegedly proceeded to physically assault him, slapping and thrashing him multiple times. Moments later, the elevator doors reopened, and the boy rushed inside, crying, with the woman following him.

Following this horrifying incident, hundreds of society residents came out in protest, voicing their anger and demanding strict action. The protesters shouted slogans against the Noida police, alleging that the woman had a history of conflicts with other residents over her pet dogs.

“We received a complaint that a woman assaulted a child inside an elevator in Gaur City 2. She has been taken into custody, and a thorough investigation is underway,” stated central Noida senior police officer Shakti Mohan Awasthi.

Speaking to The Daily Guardian, DCP Central Noida, Shakti Mohan Awasthi, confirmed that a police case had been registered against the woman under sections 325 and 152A of the BNS, and she had been arrested.

It is worth noting that in recent times, several incidents have been reported from gated apartment complexes in Noida and Greater Noida involving pet dog owners engaging in disputes and altercations with other residents.

</excerpt>

In a significant development, Sri Lanka has assured India that it will not permit its territory to be used in any manner that could compromise the security of India. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka reiterated this commitment in a joint statement with India, making it an official promise to New Delhi.

This assurance comes at a time when China is actively pursuing its ‘Mission Indian Ocean,’ which is seen as a threat to India’s interests. China has taken over Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port after Colombo failed to repay a $1.7 billion loan, and has been docking its naval surveillance and spy ships at the port. The presence of Chinese ships in the region has raised concerns in New Delhi, given Sri Lanka’s proximity to India.

In August 2022, Sri Lanka had initially asked China to defer the arrival of its 25,000-tonne satellite and ballistic missile tracking ship Yuan Wang 5, but later allowed it to dock for ‘replenishment.’ Since then, Chinese surveillance and spy ships have regularly patrolled the Indian Ocean region and docked at Hambantota.

The Yuan Wang 5 is equipped with a robust tracking, sensing, and communication relay system, capable of detecting foreign satellites, aerial assets, and missile systems. China’s possession of the Hambantota port for a 99-year lease has raised concerns about the potential use of the port for military purposes.

Today’s agreement between India and Sri Lanka ensures that Sri Lankan territory, including its waters, will not be used in any manner that could compromise India’s security or regional stability. The two countries have also agreed to expand their bilateral partnership and aim to soon conclude a comprehensive defense cooperation pact.

India-Sri Lanka Bilateral Ties Deepen

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka held a comprehensive dialogue in New Delhi, discussing the entire gamut of bilateral ties. The two leaders reaffirmed that the India-Sri Lanka bilateral partnership is underpinned by deep-rooted cultural and civilizational ties, geographical proximity, and people-to-people relations.

President Disanayaka conveyed his deep appreciation for India’s unwavering support to the people of Sri Lanka during and after the economic crisis in 2022. Both leaders acknowledged that bilateral ties had deepened over the years and contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s socio-economic development.

</excerpt>

Next generation surgical robot, setting a new benchmark in Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Urology and GI Surgeries launched by Fortis Escorts, Okhla Road, New Delhi on Tuesday. The Surgical Robot is a next-generation medical technology designed to assist in complex surgeries with greater precision and control. This robot represents a significant advancement in robotic-assisted surgery, enabling minimally invasive procedures that promise faster recovery times, reduced risk of complications, and improved overall patient outcomes.

The Surgical Robot was launched by Smriti Irani (BJP Leader & Former Union Minister) who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. She was joined by Dr. Ashok Seth, Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute & Fortis Healthcare Medical Council, Dr. Bishnu Panigrahi, Group Head – MSOG, Dr. Z S Meharwal – Chairman and Head – Adult Cardiac Surgery, VAD Programme and Heart Transplant, Dr Ritwick Raj Bhuyan, Director, Adult Cardiac Surgery, Dr Milind Hote, Director, Adult Cardiac Surgery, Dr Paresh Jain, Director, Urology & Kidney Transplant, Dr Sanjay Verma, Director, Minimal Access, GI & Bariatric Surgery, & Dr. Vikram Aggarwal, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts, Okhla.

Speaking at the launch, BJP leader and former Union Minister Smt. Smriti Irani said, “I compliment Fortis Healthcare for leading the way in adopting advanced medical technologies like the Surgical Robot. This innovation represents a significant step in enhancing patient care, enabling faster recovery and minimally invasive procedures. Fortis’s commitment to excellence ensures that patients receive world-class treatment, reinforcing India’s position as a leader in healthcare innovation.”

Dr Ritwick Raj Bhuyan, Director, Adult Cardiac Surgery, Fortis Escorts, Okhla, New Delhi said, “What makes SURGICAL ROBOT unique from other surgical systems is its open console design, which provides surgeon with a 3D vision of the surgical site. This enhances precision while avoiding the need for large bone cuts in cardiac procedures. The 360-degree vision ensures a clear view of the internal structures thus leading to efficient tissue handling, reduced post-surgical trauma. In cardiac bypass operations, it facilitates complete restoration of blood in the blocked arteries with minimal scarring. Additionally, certain valve repairs and congenital heart defect closures can be performed with just 2 small pin hole incisions, allowing patients to return home within 3 days of surgery”

“Recently, we successfully treated a 70-year-old man from Assam with severe blockages in his heart using the Surgical Robot. Earlier this year, the patient underwent angioplasty at another hospital in Delhi. Although the procedure was initially successful, he began experiencing chest pain within a week and required medication to manage his symptoms. His condition failed to improve, and he was advised to undergo an open-heart surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting) to replace the blocked stents. Concerned about the risks associated with open-heart surgery, particularly due to his weak and fragile bones, the patient sought our opinion. After thoroughly evaluating his case, we opted for a robotic-assisted heart bypass operation using the Surgical Robot. This approach avoided the need for bone cutting, minimized pain, and significantly reduced blood loss. We successfully opened all three blocked arteries, and the patient experienced an exceptionally smooth recovery,” said Dr. Ritwick Raj Bhuyan.

</excerpt>

New Delhi [India], October 19 – Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has stated that the H1B visa issue is now a “thing of the past,” signaling a shift in India’s international discussions. Speaking at Vanijya Bhavan, New Delhi, Goyal highlighted that future dialogues would focus on fresh economic opportunities rather than old grievances.

Strategic Shift from Visa Talks to Global Investments

During a two-day visit to New York, Goyal met with CEOs of major companies, emphasizing reforms by the Modi government aimed at boosting foreign investments in India. Special attention was given to the pharmaceutical and diamond industries, with Surat standing out as a key destination for such investments.

Deepening Indo-U.S. Business Ties

Goyal’s U.S. trip also included a luncheon in Washington with 17 CEOs from the CEO Forum, including Tata Sons’ top executive. The forum is undergoing restructuring, with several members’ terms expiring in December. New Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, reinforcing the commitment to strengthen business relationships between India and the U.S.

Focus on Emerging Sectors

The visit went beyond traditional sectors, extending discussions to clean energy, technology transfer, and digital telecommunications. There was also an emphasis on critical areas like defense and biosciences. While progress on biofuels was slowed by the upcoming U.S. elections, Goyal highlighted promising collaborations in other industries.

Stable Currency Exchange, Tourism, and the Digital Economy

Another key point discussed was the stabilization of the exchange rate between the Indian rupee and the U.S. dollar, which could greatly benefit bilateral trade. Additionally, Goyal engaged with SMEs, educators, and think tanks, stressing India’s focus on boosting tourism and the digital economy.

Conclusion

Piyush Goyal’s recent U.S. visit has opened doors for significant investment opportunities, showing India’s resolve to attract global investors.
India’s fascination with momos, a popular street food, has taken an unexpected turn, with new and unusual variations popping up at food stalls across the country almost daily. A viral video shared on Instagram showcases he fruit momos seller street vendor in Delhi demonstrating the preparation of this unconventional dish. The vendor begins by arranging a plate of fruits, including apples, bananas, mango and guavas, which are then fried in butter. He adds milk, liquid cheese, and cream to the mix, seasoning it with salt, pepper, and mixed herbs. To complete the dish, he incorporates fried paneer momos, stirring everything together before serving it to a customer.

Reactions to the Unusual Creation

The vlogger capturing the moment claims, “Aise momos puri Delhi mein nahi milenge” (You won’t find this dish anywhere in Delhi), highlighting its appeal to gym enthusiasts. However, not everyone is ready to embrace this fusion of fruits, cream, and fried momos. Social media reactions have been mixed, with many expressing their skepticism and disdain.

One user commented, “Times were good when there were only veg, chicken, and paneer steamed momos.” Another sarcastically remarked, “Not disrespecting you, but I’d rather choose poison.” Further, one user humorously added, “In hell, he will be fried in Amul butter, not oil,” while another questioned the nature of the dish, asking, “Is this momo veg or cheese? Brother, this is poison.” The general sentiment was captured by a user who simply stated, “Don’t want it.”

The Future of Momos?

As the momo craze continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether these new flavors will gain acceptance among traditionalists. While some may appreciate the innovative approach, others cling to the classic steamed or fried varieties that have made momos a cherished snack in India. With the culinary landscape constantly changing, only time will tell if fruit momos will find a permanent place in the hearts (and stomachs) of food lovers across the country.

The Disturbing Discovery

The customer, who goes by the username “WaltzSimple6037” on Reddit, ordered an iced latte and a salted caramel coffee for takeaway. Upon opening the iced latte while seated in their car, they were horrified to find what they initially believed to be a coffee bean was, in fact, a dead cockroach.

“I visited L’Opéra today in Khan Market and ordered an iced latte to go. When I opened the drink, I thought I saw a coffee bean floating around, but when I flipped it over, it was a freaking cockroach,” the customer detailed in their post. They expressed their disappointment not only in the discovery but also in how the staff responded to the situation.

Staff’s Nonchalant Response

Upon returning to the outlet to show the staff the cockroach, the customer noted that the staff apologized but showed “no real concern at all.” “They were so nonchalant and just kept saying sorry like robots, with no genuine concern,” the customer remarked. The incident has left them questioning the cleanliness of the café and worrying about hygiene standards at other establishments in India.

Reactions on Social Media

The Reddit post quickly garnered attention, with users sharing their thoughts and experiences. One user humorously commented, “It’s not a bug, it’s a feature,” while another added, “There are no food standards in India, even when you pay such a high price for a drink.” Several users suggested reporting the incident, with one advising, “You can complain about it on the FSSAI website and also opt for a consumer complaint for the problem.”

Filing a Complaint

In light of the incident, the customer stated that they have lodged a complaint with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and are considering legal action. They expressed their disappointment at the experience and called for better hygiene practices in the food industry.

This unsettling incident serves as a reminder of the importance of food hygiene and quality control in cafés and restaurants. As customers demand higher standards, establishments must be proactive in ensuring that their food and beverages meet safety expectations.

</excerpt>

The latest news from Bangladesh is that the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus will review the MoUs Sheikh Hasina signed as Prime Minister with India, and will cancel the ones that it feels are not in Bangladesh’s interest. While this is a move to pander to the anti-India jihadis that are now running amok in Bangladesh, let us examine what exactly Yunus and Co are planning to review. Among the latest MoUs are the 10 that Sheikh Hasina signed during her visit to New Delhi in June 2024. These are on digital partnership, green partnership, maritime cooperation and blue economy, joint small satellite project, cooperation in oceanography, cooperation concerning military education, cooperation in health and medicine, cooperation in the field of disaster management, and cooperation in fisheries. There was also some understanding about giving Bangladeshi goods access to markets in Nepal and Bhutan by using Indian roads and railways. Which among these MoUs does the interim government plan to cancel? Or which decision that was announced in June 2024 that it would renege on—e-visa for medical patients from Bangladesh; export of 40 MW of power from Nepal to Bangladesh using the Indian grid; or discussions to renew the Ganga Water Treaty? All these are of benefit to Bangladesh and will hurt that country the most if scrapped. Take the textile sector for example—the industry that has helped Bangladesh drag millions of people out of debilitating poverty. But for major exports of fabric and uninterrupted power from India, Bangladesh would not have become the economic success story that it has become in India’s neighbourhood.

Even though the list given here is anything but exhaustive, it should serve as a reality check for Bangladeshis on India’s centrality to the region. New Delhi has an interest in having a stable and prosperous neighbourhood, the reason why it has been doing a lot of heavy lifting for countries like Bangladesh, under the “Neighbourhood First” policy.

However, in spite of its economic success, in recent years Bangladesh has been facing economic downturn, unable to withstand the twin blows of Covid and the Ukraine-Russia war, and has been seeking IMF bailouts. In 2024, Bangladesh’s nominal GDP is around US$455 billion, a little more than Maharashtra’s US$435 billion in 2022-2023. The road ahead is perilous for Bangladesh. Essentially, Bangladesh is puny, but at least a section of its population including policymakers seems to be delusional enough to believe that they can take on India. What else explains Dhaka trying to boost its war fighting capabilities by striking a defence deal with Pakistan, by which it will get substantial supplies of artillery and tank ammunition and RDX explosives for its defence forces? Apart from giving itself an ego massage, who does Bangladesh expect to use all this against, given it’s surrounded on three sides by India and shares only a sliver of land border with Myanmar? It was thought that all the troll talk on social media platforms that now that Bangladeshi students have removed Hasina, next they would dismember India by taking away the whole of Northeast, was just that—mindless bravado by trolls. Instead it looks like the Bangladesh government is actively fuelling such delusional thoughts at least among a section of its population. It’s this section that is going around asking for a boycott of Indian goods and spreading hatred towards India by attributing even natural disasters to a conspiracy by “RAW”—the recent flooding of Bangladesh’s eastern border areas being a case in point. The problem is that this so-called students’ revolution has taken the shape of mob rule, where secular journalists are being murdered; minority officials and teachers are being forced to resign; doctors are being assaulted; music concerts are being attacked; rampant looting and arson is becoming the order of the day; flood relief material is either not being distributed among the minorities, or being distributed only if the minorities are willing to give up their religious symbols; T-shirts are being sold with the words “teach your children to hate India”. It’s an endless list and proves the extent of radicalization that has seeped into Bangladeshi society as a whole. It was last week that a tyre factory belonging to an Awami League leader was burnt to the ground, along with at least 170 people, who were either there working or were participating in the looting—170 people who just disappeared from the face of the earth in the most gruesome manner. What makes Bangladesh’s policymakers think that international businesses are so enamoured of the students’ revolution that they would ignore such violence in a country whose economy is already on a downward spiral?

Meanwhile, amid all the hatred for India, something interesting took place last week, when thousands of Bangladeshis queued up in front of India’s visa office in Dhaka, desperate for a visa to India. It was just that India had shut down most of its consular services in Bangladesh because of the threat its embassy staff faced from the mob. It was after much pleading that India relented a bit and is now offering a few medical and student visas from this week. Talk about learning to appreciate India the hard way.

The bottom line is, unless and until Dhaka is able to control the demon within, unless and until it stops the mob from influencing policy, Bangladesh is bound to see a third revolution. </excerpt>

Delhi Police have reviewed and bolstered security at the Israeli Embassy and Chabad House following intelligence alerts triggered by the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. On July 31, Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed in an airstrike at a residence he used in the Iranian capital.

Sources indicate that senior officers held a meeting to develop an extensive security plan for the two Israeli buildings in Delhi. A senior officer stated that a multi-layered security system is already in place, with numerous CCTV cameras installed around both sites. Additional personnel may be deployed if necessary.

On Thursday, the Delhi Police issued a clarification after a false alert about explosions was posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The police confirmed it was a hoax, and the post was subsequently deleted.

In the past three years, two low-intensity blasts have occurred near the Israeli Embassy in Delhi, neither causing injuries. Security around the embassy was increased following the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Hamas last year.

The recent assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, who was considered the overall leader of Hamas, has heightened tensions in the Middle East. Iran has vowed retaliation against Israel, holding it responsible for the killing. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared it Tehran’s “duty to take revenge” against the “criminal, terrorist Zionist regime,” which he accused of martyring a “dear guest” on Iranian territory.

</excerpt>

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena expressed deep sorrow and condemnation over the deaths of four civil service aspirants in two separate incidents in the national capital. He called the situation “most unfortunate and unacceptable.”

Three of the aspirants died on Saturday in a flooded basement of a coaching center in Old Rajendra Nagar following heavy rains. Earlier in the week, another aspirant died due to electrocution caused by waterlogging, sparking widespread outrage.

In a series of posts on X, Saxena criticized the “criminal neglect” and poor maintenance by the relevant agencies. He stated that the city’s drainage system and infrastructure had clearly failed, reflecting a broader issue of misgovernance over the past decade.

Saxena also questioned the responsibility of coaching institutions and landlords for not ensuring the safety of students who pay high fees and rents. He emphasized that such issues cannot be ignored any longer.

The Lieutenant Governor has instructed the Divisional Commissioner to submit a detailed report on the incident by Tuesday. He assured that those responsible for this negligence will be held accountable.

Following the incidents, the owner and coordinator of the coaching center were arrested. The center, which had permission to use the basement as a storage area, was found to be using it as a library, violating regulations.

</excerpt>

Sonakshi Sinha, star of “Heeramandi,” recently revealed her thoughts on her wedding attire and upcoming fashion trends. At the Hyundai FDCI India Couture Week 2024, she shared that she had always planned to wear her mother’s saree and jewelry for her wedding to longtime partner Zaheer Iqbal. She believes that a simpler, yet beautiful, bridal look will be a future fashion trend.

Sonakshi discussed her wedding outfits after walking the runway for designer Dolly J’s new collection, “La Vie En Rose,” at the couture week. Sonakshi and Zaheer tied the knot on June 23 in a private civil ceremony at her home with close family and friends.

For the ceremony, Sonakshi wore her mother Poonam Sinha’s saree and jewelry, completing the look with a sleek bun, while Zaheer wore an embroidered kurta-pyjama. For the reception, Sonakshi chose a red Banarasi saree, and Zaheer wore a white open jacket with matching pants.

Sonakshi explained, “I was very clear that for the actual signing and wedding, I wanted to wear my mother’s saree and jewelry. It was all planned in my head, and we just brought it to life on the day.”

She also mentioned her belief that simpler bridal looks are making a comeback. “I felt so comfortable at my wedding because I was in a simple but beautiful outfit. It allowed me to enjoy the day without stress. I think this trend of a simpler bride is going to be popular.”

Zaheer, who co-starred with Sonakshi in the 2022 film “Double XL,” wore an outfit designed by a friend, noting, “We went to his friend’s studio, saw one outfit, and decided on it. We weren’t too fussy.”

At the couture week, Dolly J’s collection featured elegant designs in various colors and fabrics, including light blue, marine green, pink, and red. The show included sarees, anarkali suits, and evening gowns adorned with crystals, faux fur, and intricate embroidery. Sonakshi closed the show wearing a light pink high-slit corset gown with floral net sleeves and a long train. She complemented her look with minimal accessories and a curly hairstyle.

Dolly J described the collection as aiming for a fresh approach with corsets replacing traditional blouses, and she noted that the outfits are designed to make brides feel beautiful and enjoy their special day.

The India Couture Week 2024 will conclude on July 31 with a grand finale by Falguni Shane Peacock.

He made it clear that their personal issues should not be a topic for TV ratings. Despite some past disagreements visible during their IPL matches, Gambhir and Kohli will now work together as part of the Indian cricket team.

Their first challenge together will be the tour of Sri Lanka, which starts on July 27 and includes T20 and ODI matches. Gambhir highlighted, “My relationship with Virat Kohli is private and not for TRP.”

On the topic of Kohli, Gambhir said, “We have had many discussions, and it’s natural for players to compete for their spots.”

Gambhir also highlighted the importance of managing Jasprit Bumrah’s workload, especially after the retirement of senior players Rohit Sharma and Kohli from T20 Internationals. Sharma and Kohli retired from T20Is after India’s win in the T20 World Cup last November.

With these changes, Gambhir expects Sharma and Kohli to be available for most of the remaining games in the two formats they are still playing.

</excerpt>

New Delhi: Smita Sabharwal, a senior bureaucrat and member-secretary of the Telangana Finance Commission, recently stirred controversy with her comments about disability quotas in civil services. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she questioned whether such quotas are necessary for roles in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

As this debate is blowing up-

With all due respect to the Differently Abled. ?
Does an Airline hire a pilot with disability? Or would you trust a surgeon with a disability.

The nature of the #AIS ( IAS/IPS/IFoS) is field-work, long taxing hours, listening first hand to…

Sabharwal argued that the demanding nature of IAS work, which involves field duties, long hours, and direct interaction with the public, might be too challenging for individuals with disabilities. She compared this to professions like airline pilots or surgeons, asking if they would hire individuals with disabilities for these roles.

Sabharwal’s post led to a strong reaction from various quarters. Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized her view as “pathetic and exclusionary,” suggesting that such opinions reflect a lack of understanding and privilege among bureaucrats. She emphasized that criticism should be directed at the misuse of reservations, not their existence, and argued that diversity and inclusion are crucial.

Amazed that an IAS officer would be so fundamentally ignorant about disability. Most disabilities have no impact on stamina. Or intelligence. But this tweet shows enlightenment and diversity are badly needed. https://t.co/DXa0mVU3GU

Senior Supreme Court Advocate Karuna Nandy also responded, expressing amazement at the “fundamental ignorance” of Sabharwal’s stance. She pointed out that many disabilities do not affect a person’s stamina or intelligence and that people with disabilities can make significant contributions if given a fair opportunity.

Arvind Gupta, a trustee of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), also weighed in. He highlighted the success stories of individuals with disabilities who have thrived in challenging environments when given the right support. He called for better education on disability issues and emphasized that people with disabilities can contribute meaningfully to society.

Background on the Controversy

The debate was fueled by the case of Puja Khedkar, a 2023-batch probationary IAS officer. She faced scrutiny over her eligibility for disability quotas and allegations about her qualifications. Her training has been suspended while a central panel investigates the validity of her selection and the application of disability and OBC criteria.

In summary, Smita Sabharwal’s comments have ignited a broader discussion on disability rights and quotas in civil services, challenging established views and sparking a call for greater inclusivity and understanding.

The 4th Round of the India and Bangladesh Consular Dialogue took place in New Delhi, where both nations reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing people-to-people ties and strengthening consular cooperation. Aman Puri, Joint Secretary (CPV), led the Indian delegation, while Rokebul Haque, Director General (South Asia) from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led the Bangladesh delegation, according to a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs.

Established in 2017, the India and Bangladesh Consular Dialogue serves as a regular communication channel aimed at improving consular, visa, and mutual legal assistance cooperation between the two countries. This dialogue underscores the importance both nations place on fostering close ties and facilitating smoother interactions for their citizens.

During the meeting on Wednesday, both sides engaged in comprehensive discussions on a range of consular issues. These included enhancing coordination and cooperation on visa matters, repatriation processes, mutual legal assistance treaties (MLAT), and extradition cases. The dialogue also saw an agreement to further strengthen the bilateral Revised Travel Arrangement (RTA), which aims to facilitate the movement of nationals from both India and Bangladesh.

The delegations reiterated their dedication to promoting people-to-people exchanges, recognizing the significant role these interactions play in the broader context of India-Bangladesh relations. They agreed to hold the next round of the Consular Dialogue in Dhaka at a mutually convenient date, continuing their efforts to bolster bilateral cooperation.

The successful conclusion of the 4th Round of the India-Bangladesh Consular Dialogue highlights the ongoing commitment of both nations to address consular issues collaboratively and enhance the overall framework for bilateral engagement.

In a dramatic turn of events, the notorious ‘Gupta brothers find themselves at the centre of a legal storm as they face arrest in India, prompting South Africa to seek clarity from New Delhi on the unfolding saga.

The businessmen, known for their close ties to former South African president Jacob Zuma, have been detained on charges related to the alleged abetment of a builder’s suicide in Dehradun. Anil Gupta and Ajay Gupta were apprehended by authorities following accusations made in a suicide note left by builder Satinder Singh, also known as Baba Sahni. Singh tragically plunged from the eighth floor of his daughter’s building on May 24, succumbing to his injuries in the hospital.

The police acted swiftly, acting upon Singh’s purported suicide note and a formal complaint lodged by his son, Ranveer Singh. Subsequently, the Gupta brothers were arrested under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code at the Rajpur police station.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through both India and South Africa, with the latter closely monitoring developments and expressing intent to engage with Indian authorities on the matter. While the Gupta brothers await further legal proceedings, questions loom over their past influence on South African politics and business dealings.

The Gupta trio – Ajay, Atul, and Rajesh – along with their brother-in-law Anil Gupta, have been fixtures in South Africa’s corporate landscape since their relocation from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur in 1993. They swiftly rose to prominence, establishing the Sahara Group conglomerate and forging close ties with then-President Jacob Zuma.

Their rapid ascent was marked by allegations of undue influence over government affairs and the procurement of lucrative contracts from state entities, sparking public outcry and scrutiny from investigative bodies. Amid mounting pressure and a wave of damning reports, the Gupta brothers fled to Dubai following Zuma’s ousting from office.

Now, as the Gupta saga unfolds on Indian soil, South Africa watches closely, eager for insights into the unfolding legal drama and the potential ramifications for their own domestic landscape.

As the Gupta brothers navigate the legal labyrinth in India, their arrest serves as a stark reminder of the far-reaching consequences of unchecked influence and alleged malfeasance, underscoring the imperative for transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in both India and South Africa.

</excerpt>

The top leaders of the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc are set to meet in New Delhi on June 1 to evaluate their performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections and strategize for the future. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, a key figure in the opposition bloc, will convene the meeting, which coincides with the final phase of polling on June 1.

However, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee has stated that she cannot attend the meeting due to elections scheduled for nine seats in West Bengal on the same day. Mamata Banerjee said, “The INDIA team is holding a meeting on June 1. I have told them I can’t join as we have election on 9 seats in West Bengal on the same day. Punjab, Bihar & UP also have elections on June 1. One one side is the cyclone, and on the other side, it is elections – I have to do everything. Cyclone relief is my priority right now.”

I have told them I can’t join as we have election on 10 seats in West Bengal on the same day. Punjab, Bihar & UP also have elections on June 1.

A few days ago, Mamata Banerjee stated that her party would provide “outside support” to the Opposition alliance if it manages to form a government at the Centre.

“We (TMC) will support the INDIA bloc from outside to form a government at the Centre. We will extend our support so that in (West) Bengal, our mothers and sisters never face a problem… and those who work in the 100 days’ job scheme, also do not face problems,” she said.

The day after her remark about outside support, the TMC chief clarified that she is “very much part of the INDIA alliance” at the national level. “At all India level, some people have misunderstood my statement yesterday. I am very much part of the INDIA alliance. The INDIA alliance was my brainchild. We are together at the national level and will continue to be together.”

Voting is scheduled for nine seats in West Bengal on June 1, including two seats in Kolkata: Kolkata Dakshin and Kolkata Uttar. Other constituencies include Jadavpur, Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jayanagar, Mathurapur, and Diamond Harbour.

The meeting’s agenda will cover discussions on the opposition’s strategy ahead of the election results announcement on June 4 and an evaluation of their performance during the seven-phase elections. The opposition alliance, comprising 28 parties, is confident in its ability to prevent the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from returning to power and aims to form its own government.

Previous meetings of the INDIA bloc have taken place in various cities, including Patna, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, where resolutions were adopted to collectively contest the Lok Sabha elections. While the TMC does not have a seat-sharing arrangement with the Congress or any other party in West Bengal, it has supported the Samajwadi Party’s candidate, Laliteshpati Tripathi, in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi.

Meanwhile, the ruling alliance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated its confidence in securing a third consecutive term in government.

At nearly midnight, the neighborhood was startled by unexpected explosions. Vinay Narang, the leader of the C Block Residents Welfare Association (RWA), was on his way home when a neighbor contacted him. The caller informed Vinay about an explosion at the nearby small hospital on the main road. Vinay hurried back, parked his car, and sprinted to the scene without hesitation.

“I saw two nurses carrying a baby each, wrapped in bedsheets, in their hands. They were shouting for help,” he recalled. “I took one of the newborns from the nurses while Arunima carried the other. We rushed to my Ford Endeavor, which I had parked near my house, and I turned the AC on. We kept the babies inside, hoping the AC would help them.”

Upon learning from the nurses about other newborns still inside, Narang and Sharma were informed by a passing couple, who also witnessed the situation and stopped to offer assistance. Without hesitation, they hurried back to aid in the rescue efforts.

Singh said “The window glass had already been broken… it opened right inside the neonatal room… The babies were right there in those small enclosures, wrapped in white cloth. The ventilators were shut. There was so much smoke inside that I couldn’t breathe… Some of them (babies) were crying. I picked them up one by one and handed them to the nurses and other neighbors standing next to the ladder.”

At approximately 11:45 pm, the fire brigade arrived at the scene. A firefighter described the situation, noting the intense flames engulfing the two-floor building, which was wedged between larger four-story residential buildings. One team focused on dousing the fire, while another worked to enter the building swiftly. “The scale of the fire was such that it had started to engulf the neighboring buildings and an electricity pole. Once we extinguished the flames, we entered from the front,” said the man.

He said they didn’t know if the babies were alive or not. It was only later that they learned six of them didn’t make it.
