Yogi Govt Bans Meat Sale Near Religious Sites for Navratri

<excerpt>Ahead of Chaitra Navratri, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has ordered the closure of illegal slaughterhouses and banned meat sales within 500 meters of religious places. Special restrictions will be imposed on Ram Navami, completely prohibiting animal slaughter and meat sales.
</excerpt>

The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, has directed immediate closure of all illegal slaughterhouses and banned the sale of meat within 500 meters of religious places before the nine-day Chaitra Navratri festival. Besides, the government on Sunday also announced a complete ban on the slaughter of animals and the selling of meat on April 6, which is Ram Navami day, to preserve religious sanctity.

As per a statement made by the UP government on Saturday, Principal Secretary (Urban Development) Amrit Abhijat has instructed all District Magistrates, Police Commissioners, and Municipal Commissioners to make these orders effective forthwith. The orders, which were given in 2014 and 2017, have now been made stronger to preserve religious sentiments and maintain law and order during the festival.

District-Level Committees to Monitor Implementation

For enforcing stringent compliance, the government has established district-level committees with chairpersons from respective District Magistrates. The committees have members from various departments such as Police, Pollution Control Board, Animal Husbandry, Transport, Labour, Health, and Food Safety Administration. Authorities have been directed to initiate punitive action against offenders under the UP Municipal Corporation Act (1959) and the Food Safety Act (2006 and 2011).

Chaitra Navratri, a major Hindu celebration of Goddess Durga, will begin on Sunday, March 30, and end with Ram Navami festivities on April 6. The celebration sees extensive fasting and worship among Hindu believers, and enforcing the same constraints is hence a priority for the government.

Shiv Sena Leader Demands Shut Down of Roadside Non-Veg Stores in Mumbai

At the same time, in Mumbai, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam has asked local authorities to close roadside stalls selling meat, fish, and mutton during Navratri. Following a meeting with Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Gunjalay (Zone 10), Nirupam stressed that restaurants can keep serving non-vegetarian food, but open meat stalls must be closed as a gesture of respect for religious sentiments.

From tomorrow, holy festival Navratri will begin. A lot of Hindu devotees will fast and pray to the goddess. At such a time, Shawarma stalls are available on the streets in Mumbai, and non-veg is served there. This is injuring Hindu sentiments,” ANI quoted Nirupam as having said.

Enforcement of these restrictions is proof of the government’s dedication to religious harmony and ensuring that sentiments of the devotees are not hurt during the auspicious festival of Navratri.

The municipal corporation’s executive committee approved the move, emphasizing the city’s religious significance. Restrictions on cigarette sales near temples and schools were also enforced.
</excerpt>

For the first time, all meat, fish and poultry shops within the Varanasi municipal limits will be closed throughout Chaitra Navratri, starting Sunday. The decision was cleared by the executive committee of the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, headed by Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, in a meeting on Thursday, as per The Times of India.

The closure is being timed with Eid, which would be celebrated on Monday, based on the moon sighting. Strict enforcement of the decision was insisted upon by the mayor, declaring, “The executive-approved proposal to close meat shops during Navratri will be enforced rigorously.”

Tiwari further urged consideration from the Muslim community, saying, “They (Muslims) should consider that their Hindu brothers find Navratri the most sacred. So, at least for nine days, let it be. Is anyone stopping them for 360 days?” He highlighted Varanasi’s status as a ‘religious and cultural capital’, with nearly 2 lakh pilgrims visiting daily. “A tradition should be followed, and it should not be seen as something forced,” he added.

The committee member Madan Mohan Dubey moved during the meeting to extend the closure to meat, fish, and poultry shops for the whole Navratri period. Further, sales of cigarettes outside religious places and schools were banned, and a new license fee for cigarette vendors was approved.

Last week, Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials, with city veterinary officer Dr. Ajay Pratap Singh at the helm, imposed closure of 26 non-vegetarian eateries close to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The operation also spilled over to Muslim-dominated localities, such as shopping complexes in Naisadak and Beniabagh.

The idea of banning meat and liquor outlets around the temple was first floated by Adivishveshwar corporator Indresh Kumar Singh, based on Section 91 (2) of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1959. During January, VMC corporators observed that temple cities like Ayodhya, Mathura, and Haridwar do not have meat and liquor outlets in a two to five kilometer radius. The proposal was voted through unanimously.

</excerpt>

Navratri, a festival dedicated to worshipping Goddess Durga, is celebrated with great devotion across India. During this period, many people observe fasting and follow a specific diet that excludes regular grains like rice, wheat, and lentils. One of the most popular alternatives to rice during fasting is Samak rice, also known as barnyard millet. It is a nutritious, gluten-free grain that is light on the stomach, making it ideal for fasting. In this article, we will explore some of the best Samak rice dishes to enjoy during Navratri, blending taste and health effortlessly.

Samak Rice Pulao

Samak Rice Pulao is a fragrant, one-pot dish that resembles regular rice pulao but is made with barnyard millet. It is loaded with vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and peanuts, and flavored with cumin seeds, black pepper, and green chilies. This dish is not only delicious but also packed with nutrients like fiber, iron, and calcium, making it a perfect option for Navratri meals.

Recipe Tip: Add fresh coriander leaves and a squeeze of lemon juice for a burst of freshness.

Samak Rice Khichdi

For a simple, light, and nourishing meal, Samak Rice Khichdi is the go-to dish during Navratri. Made by cooking samak rice with potatoes and mild spices like cumin, sendha namak (rock salt), and green chilies, this khichdi is easy to digest and keeps you full for longer. It’s often paired with a bowl of yogurt or vrat-special raita for a wholesome, balanced meal.

Recipe Tip: Top the khichdi with a dollop of ghee to enhance the flavor and richness of the dish.

Samak Rice Idli

A vrat-friendly twist on the popular South Indian dish, Samak Rice Idli is a soft and spongy idli made from samak rice and yogurt. The batter is fermented, giving the idlis a light texture and mild tangy flavor. Serve them with vrat-special coconut chutney or peanut chutney for a perfect Navratri breakfast or snack. This dish is not only healthy but also provides a great source of protein and fiber.

Recipe Tip: Steam the idlis in a traditional idli steamer for perfect fluffiness.

Samak Rice Dosa

Another South Indian favorite that can be enjoyed during Navratri is Samak Rice Dosa. This crispy dosa is made with fermented samak rice batter, similar to the idli batter. Stuff it with vrat-friendly aloo (potato) filling and serve it with a side of coconut chutney for a satisfying meal. The dosa is a perfect blend of crispiness and flavor, making it an enjoyable dish during fasting.

Recipe Tip: Use ghee instead of oil to cook the dosa for a richer, vrat-friendly taste.

Samak Rice Kheer

If you’re craving something sweet during your fast, Samak Rice Kheer is the perfect dessert. This creamy and rich kheer is made by cooking samak rice in milk, sweetened with sugar or jaggery, and flavored with cardamom. It is garnished with almonds, cashews, and raisins for added texture and taste. This vrat-friendly dessert is not only delicious but also provides a comforting end to your Navratri meal.

Recipe Tip: Add saffron strands to the kheer for a royal touch and enhanced flavor.

Samak rice, or barnyard millet, is an excellent substitute for regular rice during Navratri fasting. It is light, nutritious, and can be used in a variety of dishes, from savory pulaos and khichdis to sweet kheer. Whether you are looking for a main course, snack, or dessert, Samak rice dishes offer a delicious way to maintain your energy levels while adhering to the fasting guidelines. Try these healthy and flavorful dishes to enjoy a wholesome and fulfilling Navratri fast!

</excerpt>

Navratri, a nine-day festival, holds immense spiritual significance, celebrating the triumph of good over evil. It is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Durga in her nine divine forms, each representing different aspects of feminine power. The festival symbolizes the victory of the goddess over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. This sacred period is marked by fasting, dancing (Garba and Dandiya), devotion, and a deep connection with the divine. People celebrate Navratri with immense zeal.

Fasting During Navratri: Cleansing the Body and Soul

Fasting during Navratri is not just a religious observance but also has great benefits for the body. Many people choose to fast as a way to purify their system and enhance spiritual discipline. Fasting during these nine days restates the digestive system, encourages detoxification, and promotes mental clarity. Traditionally, grains like rice and wheat are avoided, and sattvic food is consumed, which includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, and dairy products. Fasting helps regulate metabolism, remove toxins, and boost energy levels by allowing the body to rejuvenate. It’s a wonderful practice that connects spirituality with health benefits, emphasizing moderation and balance.

Traditional Offerings and Healthier Alternatives

During Navratri, food plays a significant role, especially in offerings to the goddess. Sweets like Kheer (a rice pudding made with milk and sugar), Ladoo, and Halwa are commonly prepared and offered to Durga. However, as health consciousness grows, many people embrace healthier alternatives to these traditional dishes. For instance, Kheer can be made with almond or coconut milk, sweetened with natural alternatives like jaggery or dates, and fortified with nuts and seeds for added nutrition. Similarly, Ladoos can be prepared with whole grain flours and reduced sugar, incorporating ingredients like oats, nuts, and dried fruits for a nutritious twist. These substitutions honor tradition and align with modern dietary preferences, allowing devotees to indulge in the festive spirit without compromising on health.

Mindful Eating During Navratri

Navratri is a perfect time to embrace mindful eating. Whether fasting for religious reasons or just looking to detoxify, focusing on whole, unprocessed foods can provide lasting benefits. Consuming more fruits, vegetables, and dairy while cutting down on fried foods and sweets allows you to enjoy the festival without feeling sluggish or overindulged.

Navratri is not just a time for religious observance but also a chance to reset your body and mind. With healthier alternatives to traditional offerings and fasting foods, you can maintain the balance between devotion and well-being, ensuring a fulfilling and nourishing experience throughout the festival.

</excerpt>

Navratri, one of the most revered Hindu festivals, spans nine nights and is celebrated across India with great devotion. The festival honors the goddess Durga in her nine forms and represents the triumph of good over evil. Among these nine days, *Ashtami* (the eighth day) and *Navami* (the ninth day) hold special significance. These days are often marked by rituals like *Kanya Puja* (also known as Kanya Bhojan or Kanya Jaiman), which involves worshipping young girls, symbolizing the nine forms of Durga.

Significance of Ashtami (Durga Ashtami)

Devotion to Goddess Mahagauri

Ashtami is dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri, the eighth form of Goddess Durga.
Mahagauri symbolizes purity, serenity, and wisdom. According to legend, after intense penance, Goddess Parvati’s complexion became dark, but Lord Shiva bathed her in the waters of the Ganga, giving her a radiant white appearance.
Mahagauri’s worship on Ashtami is believed to purify devotees of their sins, granting them inner peace and spiritual growth.

Auspicious Day to observe Fast

On Durga Ashtami, many devotees observe a fast to please the goddess. Fasting is considered a way to purify the body and mind, bringing one closer to divinity. Special prayers and rituals are performed in homes and temples to honor Goddess Mahagauri. Worshipping her on Ashtami is believed to remove obstacles and ensure prosperity.

End of Demonic Forces

Durga Ashtami also commemorates the fierce battle between Goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura. According to the Durga Saptashati, a significant portion of the battle took place on Ashtami. The goddess, in her fierce forms, destroyed many demons, laying the groundwork for Mahishasura’s final defeat. As such, Ashtami symbolizes the ultimate victory of good over evil.

Chanting of Durga Saptashati

On this day, many devotees recite or listen to the Durga Saptashati, a sacred text that narrates the stories of the goddess’s battles against various demons. The chanting of these verses is believed to invoke the protective energy of the goddess, safeguarding the devotee from negativity and harm.

Importance of Navami (Maha Navami)

Devotion to Goddess Siddhidatri
Navami is the last day of Navratri and is dedicated to Goddess Siddhidatri, the ninth and final form of Durga. She is believed to grant siddhis (spiritual powers) to her devotees. Siddhidatri is a manifestation of divine wisdom and knowledge. By worshipping her, devotees seek her blessings for spiritual enlightenment and fulfillment of their desires.

Culmination of Navratri

Maha Navami marks the climax of the nine-day festival of Navratri. It signifies the end of the goddess’s battle against the forces of evil. The day is seen as a culmination of the spiritual journey that devotees embark upon during Navratri. On this day, the goddess is believed to have destroyed Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of truth and righteousness.

Performance of Yajnas and Ritual

On Navami, special *yajnas* (fire rituals) and prayers are conducted to invoke the blessings of the goddess for health, wealth, and spiritual prosperity. The recitation of mantras and hymns during the yajna purifies the atmosphere and the minds of the devotees. Many temples organize grand celebrations, including the reenactment of the slaying of Mahishasura.

Cultural Celebrations

In several parts of India, particularly in Bengal, Navami is a day of feasting and joy. Large pandals (temporary shrines) are erected, and processions take place, showcasing beautifully crafted idols of the goddess. The air is filled with devotion as people come together to offer their prayers and celebrate the final victory of Durga over evil.

The Significance of Kanya Puja (Kanya Bhojan)

Worshipping the Manifestation of the Goddess
One of the most prominent rituals observed on Ashtami or Navami is Kanya Puja (also called Kanya Jaiman or Kanya Bhojan). This ritual involves worshipping young girls (typically between the ages of 2 to 10) who represent the nine forms of Goddess Durga. The girls, known as Kumaris, are seen as pure manifestations of the goddess herself.
During Kanya Puja, the young girls are invited into the home, their feet are washed, and they are offered special food, clothes, and gifts. This ritual symbolizes the honoring of feminine energy and divinity. The Kumaris are seen as bearers of the goddess’s power, and worshipping them is believed to please Goddess Durga.
The Symbolism of Feminine Power (Shakti)
Kanya Puja celebrates the power and importance of the feminine divine in Hinduism. The goddess Durga, who embodies Shakti (the divine feminine energy), manifests herself in many forms, each representing a unique aspect of creation, preservation, and destruction. Worshipping young girls during Navratri highlights the reverence Hindu culture holds for feminine power and the role of women in the cosmic order.
In this ritual, girls are adorned with beautiful clothes and accessories, symbolizing the goddess’s beauty and grace. Offering them food and gifts is a way to honor the nurturing and life-giving aspects of the feminine.

Spiritual Significance of Kanya Puja

Kanya Puja is not merely a symbolic ritual; it carries deep spiritual significance. The worship of young girls represents the purity, innocence, and potential for divinity that exists within every individual. It is a reminder that the divine resides in all beings, especially in the most vulnerable and innocent members of society.
In many parts of India, the young girls are served a meal consisting of traditional dishes like puri, chana (chickpeas), and halwa (sweet). This meal is considered sacred and is often prepared with great care. After being served, the girls bless the household, bringing prosperity and happiness.

Kanya Puja in Different Cultures

While Kanya Puja is celebrated throughout India, it takes on unique forms in different regions:
– In North India, the ritual is commonly performed on Ashtami or Navami, and families consider it auspicious to serve nine girls, representing the nine forms of Durga.
– In West Bengal, Kanya Puja is part of the grand Durga Puja celebrations, where young girls are worshipped as living goddesses.
– In South India, especially in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Kanya Puja is often combined with *Sujata Puja*, where women and girls are worshipped as embodiments of goddess Lakshmi.

Honoring Womanhood

Kanya Puja emphasizes the respect for women and the recognition of their essential role in society. By worshipping young girls, the ritual underscores the idea that women are the carriers of divine power and energy. It encourages respect for women at every stage of life, from childhood to old age.
Ashtami, Navami, and Kanya Puja form the spiritual heart of the Navratri festival. These rituals are a reminder of the goddess’s omnipresence and the profound importance of the divine feminine in Hinduism. Ashtami celebrates the fierce and purifying aspect of the goddess, while Navami signifies her ultimate victory over evil. Kanya Puja, in turn, reminds devotees of the purity and power of feminine energy, symbolizing the essence of the goddess in every woman and girl.
Together, these practices highlight the triumph of good over evil, the power of devotion, and the importance of worshipping the divine in all its forms, especially through reverence for women and girls. Celebrating these traditions brings spiritual fulfillment and ensures the blessings of the goddess for prosperity, peace, and protection.

The Maha Navami holiday is observed on the ninth day of Navratri. On this day, Maa Siddhidatri is worshipped by Maa Durga devotees.
Hindu legend states that on this day, Maa Durga slew the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

It is thought that Maa Siddhidatri bestows knowledge on her followers in exchange for removing their ignorance. She also supervises the planet Ketu, giving it direction and vitality.

On Navami, devotees engage in a variety of ceremonies.

On this day, many people engage in Kanjak or Kanya Puja. Many homes worship young, single girls who have not reached puberty as Durga. As their feet are cleansed and prasad is provided, they are invited to homes.

Some devotees take baths in holy rivers, others also perform Sandhi Puja and offer 108 flowers and bilva leaves to Goddess Durga.
Navami is followed by Dussehra, which marks the celebration of good over evil.

During the nine-day Navratri festival, devotees worship Maa Durga’s nine incarnations in order to obtain her blessings. There is a goddess manifestation linked with each day of Navratri.
People maintain ritualistic fasts, recite shlokas dedicated to each goddess, wear new clothing, offer bhog, and clean their homes during these nine days.
In their prayers, they ask the goddess for her favour in order to have prosperous, joyous, and fulfilled lives.
Over the next nine days, devotees offer their prayers to Goddess Durga and observe fasts.The festival of Navratri honours the defeat of the demonic Mahishasura and the triumph of good over evil. The 10th day of Sharad Navratri is celebrated as Dussehra or Vijaya Dashami.
