</excerpt>

Tahawwur Rana, currently in the custody of India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA), has reportedly confessed to aiding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and playing a key role as a “trusted agent” of the Pakistan Army. Indian authorities extradited the Canadian national and former Pakistan Army captain from the United States on April 10 and lodged him in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Tahawwur Rana Trained by LeT, Surveyed Shivaji Terminus

During questioning by both the NIA and the Mumbai Crime Branch, Tahawwur Rana purportedly disclosed that he and his boyhood pal David Coleman Headley went through intensive training by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the Pakistan-based terror group behind the attacks.

Describing LeT as “primarily an intelligence-gathering organisation,” citing unnamed sources, India Today reported that Rana admitted to surveying potential targets in Mumbai before the attacks.

He also confirmed that he was present in Mumbai during the 26/11 terrorist attacks and described it as a key part of the operation planned in conjunction with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

“He inspected locations such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and thought that 26/11 attacks were conducted in collaboration with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI),” sources said, quoting Rana.

Part of a Broader Terror Network

Rana’s supposed confessions directly implicate him in the planning and surveillance that led up to the 2008 attacks, which killed 166 individuals at several high-profile locations, such as the Taj Mahal Hotel, Oberoi Trident, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and the Jewish Centre in Mumbai.

The NIA has indicted Rana under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for conspiring with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HUJI) operatives, as well as other Pakistan-based handlers. Investigators accuse him of assisting David Headley in conducting surveillance in Mumbai, which played a pivotal role in executing the attacks.

Rana also asserted that the Pakistani Army had earlier sent him to Saudi Arabia during the Khaleej (Gulf War, underscoring his long-term association with the military establishment.

</excerpt>

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out raids at 15 locations across eight Indian states on Saturday. These operations are part of an ongoing probe into a Pakistan-linked espionage case, as per reports.

States Targeted in the Operation

The agency searched homes of people suspected of working with Pakistani intelligence agents. The raids took place in Delhi, Mumbai (Maharashtra), Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam, and West Bengal.

Evidence Seized During Raids

During these searches, NIA officials seized electronic gadgets, financial records, and other suspicious items. Now, they are examining these materials for proof of a spy network allegedly run by Pakistan-based agents.

Focus on a CRPF Jawan

This case mainly involves Moti Ram Jat, a former jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Investigators found that he had been sharing secret information with Pakistani intelligence officers.

Shocking Payment for Sensitive Data

Surprisingly, he gave away this classified information for just ₹3,500 per month. He had been tricked by a Pakistani agent who posed as a journalist.

Eventually, the CRPF dismissed Jat from his post after confirming his involvement in the leak.

The extradition, he said, was made possible by the political will of both India and the US, and tireless efforts by the NIA, MEA, and government prosecution teams.
</excerpt>

As India is all set to extradite the 26/11 Mumbai attacks suspect Tahawwur Hussain Rana from the US, former Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA) Yogesh Chander Modi termed the move a “big achievement” for India. Rana, the primary conspirator behind the 2008 attacks, would now face trial in India as his extradition was cleared by the US Supreme Court.

Speaking to ANI, Yogesh Chander Modi praised the persistent efforts of the NIA and the Indian government in pursuing the case for over a decade. “”This is a big achievement for the nation, MEA and NIA. This was 15 years old matter. NIA has worked hard on this case,” he said.

“Extradition Possible Due to Political Will of India and US”

Accentuating the multi-agency coordination involved in securing the Tahawwur Rana’s extradition, the retired NIA chief stated that the agency presented foolproof evidence and traveled to the host nation several times. “n this conspiracy case, Tahawwur Rana and David Headley came to India, but the main challenge in this case was that Rana came to India only once. For his extradition, we had to provide full proof evidence to America, had to convince courts,” he clarified.

“Works were done on different levels on this case, Indian government worked with US government and NIA worked with prosecutions agencies of US. This is possible after lot of efforts and hard work,” he asserted.

Centre Ensures Proper Interrogation, Evidence Collection

Chander also emphasized that all Indian agencies would now act together to provide a complete investigation of Rana’s arrival. “The Central government, Delhi Police and NIA will ensure that proper interrogation of Tahawwur Rana is carried out and collect evidence so that the case can be brought to its logical conclusion…,” he stated.

Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian citizen, is charged with assisting in the planning of the 2008 Mumbai attacks that resulted in the deaths of more than 174 individuals. The extradition enables India to prosecute him on its territory.

Home Minister Calls It a ‘Diplomatic Success’

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also welcomed the Tahawwur Rana’s extradition as a major diplomatic achievement. Addressing the Network18 Rising Bharat Conclave, Shah stated, “Tahawwur Rana’s (26/11 Mumbai terror attacks accused) extradition is a very big diplomatic success of the Modi government.”

Rana is being extradited from the US after the United States Supreme Court dismissed his emergency appeal to suspend the proceedings. On February 11, the US Secretary of State signed the warrant of surrender allowing him to be extradited. Even when Rana’s lawyers filed an emergency motion for a stay, the Supreme Court rejected his request on April 7.

Centeral Government Appoints Special Prosecutor for Trial

In anticipation of the forthcoming trial, the Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Advocate Narender Mann as the Special Public Prosecutor to handle proceedings regarding the NIA case RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI. The case involves both Tahawwur Rana and David Coleman Headley, who is now serving a jail sentence in the United States after signing a plea agreement.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 15 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 (34 of 2008), read with sub-section (8) of section 18 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS), the Central Government hereby appoints Narender Mann, Advocate as Special Public Prosecutor for conducting trial and other matters related to NIA case RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI on behalf of the National Investigation Agency before the NIA Special Courts at Delhi and Appellate Courts, for a period of 3 years from the date of publication of this notification or till the completion of trial of the said case, whichever is earlier,” the Home Ministry’s official notification stated.

NIA Case Against Rana and Headley Dates Back to 2009

The government had filed the case on November 11, 2009, under different provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the SAARC Convention (Suppression of Terrorism) Act, the NIA said. The FIR had listed both Rana and Headley as prime accused.

“As per the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs order No. 11034/10/ 2009-IS.VI dated 11/11/ 2009 National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered a case on 11/11/2009 at NIA Police Station, New Delhi as Case RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI under sections 121A of IPC, Section 18 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Section 6(2) SAARC Convention (Suppression of Terrorism) Act against 1) David Coleman Headley @ Daood Gilani (US Citizen), 2) Tahawwur Hussain Rana (Canadian citizen) and others,” the NIA said.

Extradition Requests, Letters Rogatory, and Legal Push

The NIA reported that the accused were arrested in the US, and formal extradition requests were made for both. Although Rana’s extradition has now been cleared, India has also issued a Letter Rogatory to Pakistan requesting cooperation in the investigation, but no response has come so far.

“NIA sent Extradition Requests to USA for extradition of accused persons David Coleman Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana, which are still pending for execution by the authorities of USA. A letter Rogatory (letter of request for assistance in investigation) has been furnished to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and the reply is awaited from them,” the agency further stated.

After the inquiry, the NIA submitted a chargesheet on December 24, 2011, before the Special NIA Court in Patiala House, New Delhi. The charges were brought under various sections of the IPC, UAPA, and connected anti-terror legislation.

Justice to the 26/11 Victims

Tahawwur Rana’s extradition is likely to usher in a new chapter in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks trial. It reflects India’s determination to bring all the conspirators, including those who were based abroad, to justice. As Rana is all set to be in NIA custody, the case is one step closer to providing closure to the victims’ families and a long-overdue trial long overdue on Indian soil.

Mann, the former special public prosecutor in numerous high-profile cases on behalf of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), will prosecute for the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The appointment is to be made for three years through a gazette notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Headley had scouted different targets in Mumbai before the fatal attack.

After a long legal battle in the US, the Supreme Court recently rejected Rana’s request to suspend his extradition, removing the last hurdle for his deportation to Indian authorities.

Once his flight reaches Delhi, the NIA will arrest him formally. Officials will present him virtually before a court and then put him in judicial custody. He will be detained in a high-security ward in Tihar Jail.

Terror That Shook the Nation

The 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks lasted 60 hours and killed 166 people at several city landmarks. Although nine of the ten Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were killed during the siege, one—Ajmal Kasab—was captured alive and executed in 2012.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court of India delivered a strong message against drug consumption on Monday, stating that it is “not cool” and emphasizing the widespread issue of substance abuse across various groups and communities in the country. The court’s remarks came during a hearing related to a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into Ankush Vipan Kapoor, who is accused of being part of a drug trafficking network that smuggled 500 kg of heroin from Pakistan into India via sea routes.

A bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and N Kotiswar Singh expressed their concern regarding the pervasive nature of substance abuse in India. “Though we are mindful of the contours of the plea seeking bail, we note our disquiet regarding substance abuse in India. This is hard-hitting and multifaceted and cuts across age groups and communities. Profits are being used to support terrorism and leading to violence,” the bench stated.

The court called for a united effort from parents, society, and government to combat the drug menace. It highlighted that academic pressure and family disturbances contribute to the problem, leading to long-term social and economic instability. “Peer pressure, stress from academics, and easy availability of drugs are triggers, and adolescents are also using it as emotional escapism,” the court noted.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court urged society not to demonize individuals who resort to drug use but rather to assist them in becoming better citizens. “The youth must not follow those who resort to drug abuse, and victims of substance abuse are not limited to the downtrodden but cut across economic barriers. We need not demonize those who have resorted to it but rehabilitate individuals and make them constructive citizens,” the court concluded.

According to a release from the NIA, the convicted individuals—Mohammed Habibur Rehman Habib, also known as Raj Jesub Mandal; Hannan Anwar Hussain Khan, alias Hannan Baburali Gazi; and Mohd Azarali Subhanallah, also known as Raja Jesub Mandal—received their sentences under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Foreigners Act. Each has also been fined Rs 2,000.

With this latest ruling, a total of five individuals have been convicted in connection with the case. Earlier in October 2023, two other suspects, Ripen Hussain and Mohammad Hasan Ali Mohammad Amer Ali, were similarly sentenced to five years in prison.

The case originated with the Pune Police in March 2018, following intelligence reports about several Bangladeshi nationals residing in Pune without valid documentation and assisting members of the ABT, which is recognized as a front organization for the banned terrorist group Al-Qaida.

The police intercepted Habib at Dhobighat, Bhairoba Nala in Pune, leading to the arrest of five Bangladeshi nationals involved in the case.

After taking over the investigation in May 2018, the NIA discovered that the arrested individuals had illegally entered India. They had fraudulently acquired various identification documents, including PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, and ration cards, using fictitious names and fake documents. These fraudulent documents were utilized to obtain Indian SIM cards, open bank accounts, and seek employment in the country.

Further investigations by the NIA revealed that the accused had not only harbored but also funded several ABT operatives, including a key member identified as Samad Mia.

</excerpt>

In her initial response to the assault on a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team at Bhupatinagar in Purba Medinipur district during an investigation related to a blast case, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted on Saturday that the elite anti-terror agency hadn’t informed the state government beforehand about their visit to the area. Sources within the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) reported that the CM also raised questions regarding why the agency conducted the raid in the middle of the night.

Addressing the Bhupatinagar incident, Mamata questioned the timing of the raid, stating, “Why did they choose to conduct the raid at midnight? Did they obtain police permission? The locals reacted as expected when faced with unfamiliar visitors late at night. Why are they apprehending people just before the elections? What does the BJP aim to achieve… by having our booth agents detained? What authority does the NIA possess? These actions appear to be in favor of a specific political party ahead of the elections. We urge all conscientious individuals nationally and internationally to condemn BJP’s deceitful politics.”

In a counterattack against the ruling TMC in the state, veteran BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad remarked, “Is this the first time such an incident has occurred in Bengal? Wasn’t the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team attacked previously? Didn’t the truth about Sandeshkhali emerge? The NIA team was conducting raids against suspected terrorists when they were attacked.”

Speaking to ANI, BJP leader Rahul Sinha strongly criticized CM Mamata, highlighting that the incident once again exposes the complete breakdown of law and order in Bengal. Sinha accused the chief minister of running a dictatorial regime under the guise of governance and administration, jeopardizing the state’s present and future.

“We demand swift identification and prosecution of those responsible for this incident. The culprits must face exemplary punishment,” added the BJP leader.

Earlier in the day, some NIA officers were reportedly harassed in Purba Medinipur district while investigating a blast case. According to sources within the elite anti-terror agency, an NIA team conducting an ongoing probe into the blast case faced an attack on Saturday in Puba Medinipur. Sources stated that the vehicle carrying NIA officers was allegedly vandalized during the process of apprehending a suspect related to the case.

A video of the purported incident circulated widely on social media, showing locals gathering around the vehicle, attempting to prevent the NIA team from taking the suspect. The villagers also reportedly hurled stones at the vehicle.

As previously reported, a team of ED officers was surrounded, harassed, and attacked by protesters in Sandeshkhali while raiding the residence of expelled and imprisoned TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and another ruling party member concerning an alleged food scam.

Speaking with media following his submission of a memorandum to the governor on Thursday asking for the removal of the Congress government in this place, he declared that the budget that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had given was “far from true” and that the Congress Party had become morally bankrupt.

“Since the slogans had been raised in Vidhana Soudha, the nation’s security was under threat. The Congress leaders think everyone would forget this incident since the joint session of the State legislature has ended but the people of Karnataka would not forget. The BJP would continue this agitation. If the incumbent government stood by Pakistan, then it didn’t have any moral right to continue. It would be better if the present government goes as early as possible,” Bommai said.

The BJP leader claimed that while the visual media made it evident that pro-Pakistan slogans were being raised, the government had been deceiving the public by misrepresenting the FSL findings. This indicates that the administration was attempting to conceal this tragedy, he claimed.

“So far, no one has been arrested in this connection. In other cases, the cops would have arrested without waiting for the FSL report. If no truth was there then why did they file a suo motu case? The incumbent government was anti-national and anti-Kannadiga and it must be dismissed by the Governor,” he said.

In response to the statement made by Congress MLC BK Hariprasad, Bommai claimed that the MLC’s stance reflected the party’s philosophy.

“The Pakistan-sponsored terrorists were killing the Indian soldiers daily. Can they be called as friends? Seeing that statement they should be called as anti-nationals,” Bommai said.

</excerpt>

On Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) raided 32 locations in Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab in a decisive move to disrupt the intricate web of the terrorist-gangster-drug smuggler nexus. The anti-terror agency, in close collaboration with state police forces, targeted key areas such as Jhajjar and Sonipat in Haryana.

The focus of the operation was on individuals associated with the notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s organized terror-crime syndicate. This strategic move follows the recent attachment of four properties owned by Bishnoi on January 6 by the NIA, three of which were immovable, and one movable.

The attached properties were deemed ‘proceeds of terrorism’ by the NIA, utilized for hatching terror conspiracies and executing serious crimes. Among the seized assets were a property in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, belonging to Vikas Singh, a harborer of the terror gang, and two properties in Fazilka, Punjab, owned by accused Dalip Kumar alias Bhola.

Furthermore, the NIA seized a Fortuner car registered in the name of Joginder Singh, a resident of Yamunanagar in Haryana. Investigations revealed that Joginder Singh, the father of gangster Kala Rana, facilitated the transportation of arms and ammunition for terrorist activities, using his vehicle.

Vikas Singh, identified as an associate of Lawrence Bishnoi, was implicated in harbouring terrorists involved in a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack on the Punjab Police Headquarters. Meanwhile, the property owned by Dalip Kumar served as a shelter and warehouse for storing weapons and harbouring gang members.

The NIA registered a case against Lawrence Bishnoi’s organized crime syndicate in August 2022. The agency’s investigations unveiled the syndicate’s widespread criminal networks across various states, responsible for sensational crimes, including the murders of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala and religious leaders.

Moreover, the NIA discovered that many of these terror conspiracies were orchestrated from abroad, involving leaders from countries such as Pakistan and Canada or those operating from prisons in India. As part of its ongoing efforts to disrupt and dismantle these networks, the NIA has adopted targeted strategies, including the attachment and seizure of properties derived from the ‘proceeds of terrorism.’

In a major operation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) launched simultaneous searches at 19 locations in South India, successfully dismantling a highly radicalized jihadi terror group, according to official sources.

The anti-terror agency, in collaboration with state police forces, initiated the raids early this morning, targeting sites predominantly associated with suspects linked to the uncovered jihadi group. Operational secrecy was maintained, and specific details about the locations and the group were not disclosed due to ongoing operational considerations.

Sources reveal that the targeted terror group has been actively involved in anti-India activities, focusing on planning attacks and recruiting youths. The NIA’s intervention follows recent raids in Bengaluru, Karnataka, where the agency probed the radicalization of prisoners by a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist.

On December 13, the NIA conducted extensive searches at six locations, including the residences of four accused individuals and premises connected to two other suspects. Notably, one of the accused remains at large. The raids, conducted as part of the ongoing investigation (RC-28/2023/NIA/DLI), yielded substantial evidence, including digital devices, incriminating documents, and a cash amount of Rs 7.3 lakhs.

The accused, identified as Mohammed Umar, Mohammed Faisal Rabbani, Tanveer Ahmed, and Mohammed Farooq, along with absconder Junaid Ahmed, are implicated in a case registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and the Explosive Substances Act, 1884. </excerpt>

The Delhi Police crime branch has successfully apprehended two shooters associated with the Goldy Brar-Lawrence Bishnoi gang, shedding light on a recent shooting incident at the residence of former Punjab MLA Deep Malhotra in Punjabi Bagh on December 3.

Both shooters, identified as Akash from Sonipat and Akhil from Charkhi Dadri, played critical roles in the targeted shooting at the ex-MLA’s residence. The assailants were allegedly acting on the orders of Goldie Brar, who allegedly threatened the former MLA via voice notes and demanded his release.

Goldie Brar’s criminal activities extended beyond the shooting, as liquor vends linked to the ex-MLA were set ablaze in Punjab, further escalating tensions.

Simultaneously, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated searches at nearly a dozen locations in Haryana and Rajasthan, focusing on individuals with connections to the incarcerated gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Bishnoi, who is currently in jail and implicated in the murder case of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala, is a notorious figure with a history of involvement in criminal activities.

The ED raids, conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), targeted the residences of suspects associated with Bishnoi, aiming to uncover financial links and illicit transactions within the gang. The Punjab Police had previously indicated that the killing of Moosewala was the result of inter-gang rivalry, with the Bishnoi gang being implicated.

Lawrence Bishnoi, arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in November 2022, has a history of involvement in various criminal conspiracies and targeted killings across regions like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi.

The recent arrests and ED raids provide a significant breakthrough in unveiling the intricate web of criminal activities orchestrated by these notorious gangs, underscoring the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing organized crime. The ongoing investigations aim to dismantle the criminal network and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The attached properties, including a double-storey and a single-storey house, are jointly owned by Khursheed Ahmed Bhat and his five brothers. The attachment follows the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A) and was ordered by the NIA Special Court in Jammu on September 30, 2023.

Recently, the NIA conducted raids across eight locations in Jammu and Kashmir linked to a terror conspiracy involving banned Pakistan-backed terrorist organizations. Among these organizations are Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), Al-Badr, and Al-Qaeda.

The search operations spanned seven districts, targeting residential premises of individuals linked to these organizations, including hybrid terrorists and Overground Workers (OGWs). The raids targeted the affiliates and offshoots of these banned outfits, notably The Resistance Front (TRF), United Liberation Front Jammu and Kashmir (ULFJ-K), Mujahideen Gazwat-ul-Hind (MGH), Jammu and Kashmir Freedom Fighters (JKFF), Kashmir Tigers, and PAAF.

During these searches, the NIA seized various digital devices containing substantial incriminating data and documents. The agency has been investigating the conspiracy of these recently formed offshoots to disrupt peace in Jammu and Kashmir through violent terrorist activities and attacks.

The agency’s sleuths are conducting extensive searches in areas like Shopian and Baramulla, targeting residences and suspected hideouts linked to individuals associated with the case. These raids come shortly after the recent arrest of a suspect involved in Pakistan-backed terrorism. The case revolves around the supply of weapons via drones to active militants in Kashmir.

Following the arrest of Zakir Hussain from Kathua district on November 27 by the NIA Jammu Branch, the agency had received vital inputs on November 29. Hussain is the latest among eight accused apprehended in the case registered by the NIA on July 30 last year, subsequent to taking over from Kathua Police.

While seven accused were arrested previously, one passed away due to cardiac arrest during judicial custody. Additionally, two Pakistan-based terror operatives remain at large. The recent charge sheet includes crucial details of the accused individuals’ involvement in terror-related activities. Four persons—Darman Singh alias Darmanjot Kahlon, Parveen Wadhwa alias Prince, Yudhvir Singh alias Sadhu, and Vikas Singh—are named in the chargesheet.

The NIA initially filed a chargesheet on March 24 against 14 accused, followed by the first supplementary chargesheet on August 9 against three additional individuals. All of the defendants face criminal conspiracy charges under Section 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code as well as Sections 17, 18, and 18(B) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967.

Parveen is one of the associates of the Lawrence Bishnoi terror syndicate, said the NIA, adding he was a “linchpin” in the dissemination of vital information among the members of the terror gang. “Investigations indicate that Parveen was instrumental in coordinating communication channels, enabling seamless interactions among gang members, even those incarcerated in different jails,” said the NIA.

Darman Singh, operating from the United States, is a key link between Lakhbir Singh alias Landa of Babbar Khalsa International and the Lawrence Bishnoi terror and crime syndicate. Parveen is an associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi terror syndicate and is described as a “linchpin” in disseminating crucial information among gang members. Yudhvir is identified as the chief arms procurer for the Lawrence Bishnoi terror syndicate, specializing in facilitating arms and ammunition procurement from foreign countries. Vikas Singh, associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, provided sanctuary to gang members involved in terror attacks, including the Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack at the Punjab Police State Intelligence Headquarters in Mohali.

According to the NIA, it has seized weapons, ammunition, incriminating digital devices, and documents from the accused. The investigation uncovered hideouts in Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh that were used to house gangsters and store weapons.

The investigation team’s vehicles, in which Shahrukh Saifi was being transported, broke down twice during the journey, according to officials. The first vehicle broke down around 3.55 a.m. near the Edakkad police station. The Edakadu police arrived 45 minutes later and secured the vehicle. In the meantime, another police vehicle was arranged to continue the journey, but it too developed a problem and failed to start. Around 4.45 a.m., the accused was driven to Kozhikode in a private car. Saifi, who is accused of sprinkling an inflammable liquid on a fellow passenger on the Alappuzha Kannur Executive Express on the night of April 2, was apprehended on Wednesday in Ratnagiri by the Marharashtra ATS with the assistance of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The arrest was made based on information provided by an eyewitness and a sketch released by the Kerala Police. According to Maharashtra Police, the accused has confessed to the crime. Saifi, 27, is a resident of the Shaheen Bagh in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar. A team from Kerala Police reached Delhi on Wednesday and visited Saifi’s home in the Shaheen Bagh area, Delhi Police said.
Maharashtra Police said that Saifi sustained severe injuries as he attempted to jump out from a train in Ratnagiri’s Khed area.
Some locals found him and rushed him to a nearby hospital in Ratnagiri. Police received information after which they detained him,” Maharashtra Police said.
The suspected perpetrator had been absconding after the April 2 incident on the Alappuzha-Kannur Express train. According to officials, the man set fire to a passenger allegedly after an argument.
At least eight passengers on the train sustained burn injuries in the fire. Three persons who sustained burns in the fire were admitted to a nearby private hospital and five persons were admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College. At least three of the injured are women. According to one of the injured, the unidentified assailant sprayed a flammable substance, possibly petrol or kerosene, on his fellow passenger, causing the fire to spread to other seats and luggage, engulfing the coach in flames.
Three people, including a child and a woman, were discovered dead on the tracks near Elathur railway station hours after the incident, according to police.
