On Wednesday, former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of a Congressional delegation arrived at the Dalai Lama Temple to meet with the Tibetan spiritual leader. Disciples of the Dalai Lama were also seen at the temple complex this morning.

The bipartisan US delegation, led by Republican Chair of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul, was welcomed by officials from the Central Tibetan Administration at Kangra Airport in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday.

Ahead of the meeting with the Dalai Lama, Dolma Tsering Teykhang, the Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, emphasized that the visit of the US lawmakers signifies “Tibet is not alone.” She stated, “They are here to experience a different way of culture that Tibetans have…we are going to have the official get-together in the meeting…It sends (the message) that Tibet is not alone. United States is with Tibet and human rights still matter. This is a message not only for Tibet but anybody who is aspiring for human rights and for freedom…” Tsering Teykhang further remarked, “All those who are suffering under the intimidation of China and the expansionist mentality of Xi Jinping, I think this is a very big message for them…”

She criticized China’s authoritarian approach, noting that Beijing is “annoyed” with those who support Tibet. “China is annoyed with anyone who supports Tibet. We are here not to annoy or humiliate China…representatives and senators are here to support just the cause. So, when there is truth, you have a supporter and if there is any truth or when they rectify the wrong politics they are practicing in Tibet, they will also get a lot of support…” she said.

Earlier this week, the US Congress passed a bill encouraging Beijing to re-engage with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders to peacefully resolve their dispute over Tibet’s status and governance. The US House of Representatives approved the ‘Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act’, also known as the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’, which now awaits President Joe Biden’s signature to become law, as reported by Radio Free Asia.

The legislation rejects Beijing’s claim that Tibet has been part of China since ancient times and calls on China to “cease its propagation of disinformation about the history of Tibet, the Tibetan people, and Tibetan institutions, including that of the Dalai Lama.” It also urges China to resume talks with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders regarding Tibet’s governance. No formal discussions have occurred since 2010.

Upon her arrival in Dharamshala, Pelosi expressed her excitement, saying, “It’s very exciting to be here.” Notably, Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in 2022 had previously strained US-China relations. McCaul confirmed President Joe Biden’s intention to sign the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’, emphasizing the bill’s importance and expressing enthusiasm about the upcoming meeting with the Dalai Lama.

Meanwhile, China voiced its concerns over the US delegation’s visit to Dharamshala. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, during a regular press conference, urged the US to recognize the “anti-China separatist nature of the Dalai Group” and to “stop sending the wrong signal to the world.” Jian stated, “It’s known by all that the 14th Dalai Lama is not a pure religious figure, but a political exile engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion.” The spokesperson continued, “We are gravely concerned over the relevant reports and urge the US side to fully recognize the anti-China separatist nature of the Dalai group, honour the commitments the US has made to China on issues related to Xizang, have no contact with the Dalai group in any form, and stop sending the wrong signal to the world.” Notably, China refers to Tibet as Xizang.

During their visit on Tuesday, the US delegation also toured the Tibetan Parliament in exile and the Tibet Museum Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Gangchen Kyisjong in Dharamshala.

Taiwan’s foreign minister claimed that China had been planning the move for some time and used Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei as a pretext to conduct war simulations in the area that helped it get ready for a potential invasion of the island.

At a briefing in Taipei on Tuesday, Joseph Wu stated that China is seeking to alter the current situation in the Taiwan Strait and that the military activity raises concerns that Beijing may go forward with an actual invasion.

“The median line of the Taiwan Strait has kept the status quo in the strait for decades, and it’s a symbol of the status quo in the strait,” said Wu. “This fact has been harmed for the past few days due to the Chinese drills, which affect regional peace, stability, and especially Taiwan’s security.”

From Wednesday to Sunday, China sent more than 120 aircraft above the median line. Taiwan reacted by sending out planes and ships, sending out radio alerts, and sending out land-based missile systems to keep an eye on the activity.

Wu added, “We want to get more support from countries around the world to jointly safeguard the status quo in the strait and maintain the authority of the strait median-line.”

With 21 PLA jets flying over the eastern portion of the Taiwan Strait median line and the island’s southwest air defence identification zone, the Taiwanese Defense Ministry reported that it had identified 39 Chinese warplanes and 13 vessels in the area of the island as of 5:00 p.m. on Monday.

In an indication that Beijing sought to maintain pressure on the island after a series of drills launched in reaction to Pelosi’s visit — which have been the most provocative in decades — the Chinese military announced a new exercise “near Taiwan” on Monday. Beijing criticised Pelosi’s visit as a breach of the US’s promise made 50 years prior not to formally recognise Taiwan’s government, which China believes is its territory.

According to a spokeswoman for the Taiwanese Army, the exercises, which took place for roughly an hour on Tuesday near Pingtung in southern Taiwan, simulated a defence against an attack from a People’s Liberation Army convoy on the beach. The spokesman described the exercises as routine and said they had been planned in advance. He claimed they had nothing to do with recent Chinese military drills.

For over twenty years the US House Speaker was the highest-level US official to visit Taiwan. “It was also my high honor to receive from President @iingwen of Taiwan the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon: a symbol of our treasured friendship. Make no mistake: America remains unwavering in our commitment to the people of Taiwan-now and for decades to come,” she added.

Earlier on Tuesday night, the US Congressional delegation landed in Taiwan. Since she landed Pelosi held several discussions with top leadership in Taiwan.

“There is a struggle between democracy and autocracy in the world. We cannot back away from that. As China uses its soft power in order to gain support, we’ve to talk about Taiwan in terms of its technological advancement and show people Taiwan’s courage to become more democratic,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi responded to China over her visit, “No more evidence is needed on what happened in Hong Kong, one country two systems didn’t happen. We don’t want anything to happen to Taiwan by force.”

During talks with Taiwanese leadership, Pelosi has made a bedrock promise to always stand with the island country.

However, China opposed the US House Speaker’s Taiwan visit terming the trip a serious violation of the one-china principle. As a part of military operations, China also announced live firing near Taiwan in response to Pelosi’s visit.

China deploys aircrafts near Taiwan, warns US to withdraw support

US House Speaker Nancy Palosi meets with Taiwan’s President Tsai-ing-wen on Wednesday to recapitulate the US’s support for the island country and ensure the US’ determination to preserve Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Pelosi said, “America has made a bedrock promise to always stand with Taiwan.” On this strong foundation, we’ve got a thriving partnership grounded in self-government and self-determination focused on mutual security in the region and the world committed to economic prosperity. “

As China has been asserting control over the sovereign island, it has condemned the US speaker’s decision to visit Taiwan.

Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday, shortly after which the Taiwan air defence identification zone confirmed that Beijing has increased air traffic controls around Xiamen, the coastal city closest to the island, and has warned the US that it will “pay the price.” Twenty-one Chinese military aircraft were seen flying into the southwestern part of Taiwan.

During her meeting with Tsai Ing-wen at the presidential office in Taipei, Pelosi referred to Taiwan as a flourishing nation. She also stated that Taipei had shown the rest of the world that, despite its difficulties, hope and perseverance can create a peaceful and successful future.

Furthermore, she said, “Now, more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial. That’s the message we bring in today.”

“Today the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy,” Pelosi said, adding, “America’s determination to preserve democracy here in Taiwan and around the world remains ironclad.”

Earlier, Pelosi also had a meeting with Tsai-Chi-Chang, the deputy speaker of Taiwan, in the Parliament.

In the meeting she mentioned, “We come in friendship to Taiwan, we come in peace for the region.”

She also said,”Now we look forward to our conversation about how we can work together to save the planet from the climate crisis. We thank you for your leadership and we want the world to recognise it. Our visit was about human rights, unfair trade practices, and security issues.
