Accused of stereotyping and disrespecting tribal communities, he later apologized, claiming his thumbnails and titles were for views, while defending his videos as ‘clean”.
</excerpt>

Bhanwar Lal Vishnoi, popularly known as Yatra Guru Ji, a Rajasthan-based travel YouTuber, is under heavy fire for material that many believe is disrespecting women of Nagaland and other tribal groups. His recent YouTube uploads, accompanied by titillating thumbnails and insensitive headings, have provoked severe outrage across social media sites.

The row deepened after a video posted on June 18 featured Vishnoi commenting on the looks of citizens of Nagaland. In that video, he said, “There’s something I want to say, the faces here all look kind of similar. As I walk ahead into a more crowded area, I feel like I’ve seen these people before. Then I see someone else and once more, I think I’ve met them already. All the faces look extremely alike. I’m not mocking anyone, but I’m simply stating what I feel genuinely. It’s like everyone looks the same.”

Take a look:

Even as he attempted to soften the blow by issuing a warning, his remarks were criticized as ignorant and racially insensitive. The residents and social media users were swift to denounce the remarks, with claims that he was perpetuating harmful stereotypes. Several are now calling for legal action against the vlogger for insulting tribal communities through his videos.

Apart from his verbal comments, people have also faulted the way his videos portray Nagaland and the Northeast. Although Vishnoi primarily talks about these places, the thumbnails usually have local women underrepresented and misrepresented, with captions that have enraged people. Arunachal Pradesh research scholar Heenu Riba expressed to The Print, “He has exotified our bodies. He is not portraying our culture in the videos, but selling our bodies for his views.”

After the uproar, Yatra Guru Ji posted a second video apologizing to Northeastern people for misrepresenting women and hurting their feelings. He told the audience that his team is presently working on changing the thumbnails. In the course of his apology, Bhanwar Lal Vishnoi also defended his previous decisions, saying he employed such images and titles because they attract more viewers. Meanwhile, he insisted that his videos are “clean” and intended to deliver informative content.

Watch:

Adding a new twist in the controversy, Bhanwar Lal Vishnoi has earlier worked with YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who is now facing grave criticism for suspectedly leaking sensitive details about the Indian Army following Operation Sindoor. The two were also spotted together on various trips, such as when they visited Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival in 2024.

</excerpt>

In Northeast India, Nagaland is emerging as a popular tourist destination, not just for its natural beauty but also as a prime spot for stargazing. With pristine skies, minimal pollution, and its location in the Himalayan foothills, the state offers breathtaking views ideal for observing meteor showers and deep-sky objects, making it one of India’s best-kept secrets for astrophotography.

Discovering Dzükou Valley

One of Nagaland’s most prominent stargazing spots is Dzükou Valley, also known as the “Valley of the Flowers of the North East.” Located at the border of Nagaland and Manipur, just behind the majestic Japfu peak, this valley sits at an altitude of 2,438 meters above sea level. The scenic landscape is further enhanced by two picturesque rivers—the Dzukou and Japfu—that meander through the valley, providing a serene backdrop for night sky observation.

For Indian nationals, permits are generally not required to enter Dzükou Valley. However, foreign travelers should verify the latest regulations with local authorities, as registration might be necessary. Additionally, due to poor mobile connectivity in the remote area, visitors are advised to inform someone about their travel plans before embarking on the trek.

</excerpt>

Kohima (Nagaland) [India], October 28 — The Indian Army commemorated the 78th Infantry Day, celebrating the courage and sacrifices of Infantry soldiers through solemn ceremonies at Leimakhong Military Station in Manipur and Zakhama Military Station in Nagaland.

Shaurya Diwas: Remembering the Historic Battle of 1947

In conjunction with Infantry Day, the Army also observed Shaurya Diwas, a tribute to the successful landing of Indian forces at Srinagar Airfield on October 27, 1947. This historic operation was critical in defending Kashmir from invading Pakistani tribals and forces, marking Independent India’s first major military success.

Wreath-Laying Ceremonies at War Memorials

Solemn wreath-laying ceremonies were held at the war memorials in Leimakhong and Zakhama, where officers, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), soldiers, and veterans gathered to honor the fallen heroes of the Infantry. Their presence symbolized the strong bond between generations of soldiers and a shared commitment to the nation’s defense.

Screening of Special Documentary on Infantry Contributions

As part of the celebrations, a special documentary was screened, showcasing the Corps of Infantry’s invaluable role in various military operations over the years. This tribute underscored the Infantry’s ongoing dedication to safeguarding India’s sovereignty and highlighted their contributions across challenging terrains and missions.

Unified Tribute by Red Shield Division

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Red Shield Division led the ceremonies, with officers and veterans sharing the stage as a symbol of unity and dedication to duty. </excerpt>

Assam Police have busted a gang in Golaghat district that was illegally smuggling English liquor on a large scale into Nagaland, a neighboring state where alcohol is prohibited. The police had been tracking this gang for a long time.

Sources informed TDG that the police received a tip-off, leading to an operation under the leadership of two sub-inspectors from Golaghat district. During the operation, two drivers of a liquor pickup truck were detained near Makrang Tinali in Golaghat. Five people in a Bolero vehicle, which was escorting the truck, were also taken into custody. The detainees are Jeem Jindang, Deepak Dutt, Vedant Madhav Bora, Sumant Bora, Kalyan Dutt, Bipul Deuri, driver Ziaur Rahman, and Rubul Ali.

Who are these detainees?

Jeem Jindang is from Karbi Anglong district, while the others are from Jorhat. Golaghat District Security Superintendent Rajen Singh told the media that the consignment of liquor was originally planned to be delivered to a wine shop in Mariani from a ware house in Jorhat. However, two days later, it was intended to be smuggled into Nagaland via Merapani.

Acting on the secret information, the police set up a checkpoint near Makrang Tinali and arrested the smugglers along with the liquor pickup truck. The police also detained Vipul Deuri, the owner of a wine shop in Mariani, and brought him to the police station.

The police seized various brands of liquor from the truck, with a market value of around Rs 39 lakh. A case has been registered against the accused under the NDPS and Smuggling Act, and further action has begun.

Nagaland banned liquor in 1989. The Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act was passed on April 24, 1990. Despite this ban, in recent years, liquor has replaced drugs in terms of addiction. In February 2024, the Nagaland DGP stated, “Drugs have replaced liquor as bribe for voters in poll-bound Nagaland.”

</excerpt>

At least 14 high school students in Japan were hospitalized after eating potato chips made with Indian ghost pepper, known as bhut jolokia. According to local reports, around 30 students tried the extremely spicy chips, which were brought to a Tokyo school by a male student on July 16 “just for fun.” Despite a warning on the packet stating that the product should not be consumed by anyone under 18, the students went ahead and ate the chips. Many soon started complaining of nausea and pain in their mouths. The school immediately alerted the police and fire department, saying several students were having difficulties after eating the chips. 14 students, all male except for one female, were taken to the hospital.

Company’s Response
Isoyama Corp, the company that makes the chips, reiterated the over-18 warning in a statement after the incident.

“People under 18 should refrain from eating this product because it is too spicy,” the company said, according to The Independent. “Not only people who are not good with spicy foods but also those who enjoy spicy foods need to be cautious while eating this product.” A company representative apologized for the incident and wished the students a speedy recovery.

The controversial chips are Isoyama Corp’s “R 18+ Curry Chips.” On its website, the company “forbids” people under the age of 18 from trying the chips, warning that they are “so spicy that they may cause you pain.” The company also advises people with weak stomachs and high blood pressure to avoid the product.

Bhut jolokia, one of the hottest chili peppers in the world, originates from Northeast India, particularly Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur. It held the Guinness World Record for the world’s hottest chili pepper from 2007 to 2011.

“The third day of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will soon begin from Viswema near Kohima. Meanwhile, going from last night’s campsite to the starting point of the journey via NH29 is a punishment in itself. The ground realities are far from the Prime Minister’s claims,” he said.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday expressed gratitude to the people of Manipur after his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra crossed the state and entered Nagaland on Monday evening.
In a post on social media, Rahul said that he will continue to stand and fight for the people of Manipur.
“Thank you to the beautiful people of Manipur for the love and warmth you have given us. I will continue to stand with you and fight for you until you have peace and justice,” he said.

</excerpt>

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party’s Neiphiu Rio and National People’s Party (NPP) chief Conrad Sangma will take oath as a Nagaland and Meghalaya Chief Ministers respectively today in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Besides Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national President JP Nadda are likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony of both the Chief Ministers. Nagaland political stalwart and its longest-serving chief minister Neiphiu Rio is set to assume office for a fifth consecutive term after the convincing win.
Rio on Saturday had tendered his resignation as Chief Minister of Nagaland to Governor La Ganesan and staked claim to form the new government in the state.
The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party-Bharatiya Janata Party retained power in the Nagaland election, with the two parties having secured 37 seats in the 60-member assembly.
Rio won the Northern Angami-II Assembly constituency, trouncing Seyievilie Sachu of the Congress by a mammoth margin of 15,824 votes. He bagged a total of 17,045 votes, which comes to 92.87 per cent of the total votes polled in the seat.
Notably, a history was scripted in Nagaland when the state elected its first women legislators in its 60 years of statehood.
The two women lawmakers – Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse of the ruling NDPP defeated the sitting MLAs in Western Angami and Dimapur-III seats respectively.
The Northeast state saw a triangular contest as Congress and CPI (M), which have been arch rivals for years, stitched a pre-poll alliance to defeat the ruling BJP.
In Meghalaya, the NPP-led alliance, with the support of 45 MLAs two of the BJP has staked claim to form the government in the state.
Among the allies, the eight cabinet berths will go to the NPP, two to the United Democratic
Sangma’s NPP won 26 seats in the Assembly elections and is all set to form the government and become the chief minister for a second consecutive term.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Raj Bhawan in Shillong where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be present.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma won from the South Tura constituency with a margin of 5,016 against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bernard N Marak.
United Democratic Party (UDP) bagged 11 seats in the results of assembly polls announced on Thursday. Congress won five seats. Trinamool Congress, which had inducted all Congress MLAs in the previous assembly, also got five seats.
BJP, People’s Democratic Front and Hill State People’s Democratic Party bagged two seats each. Voice of the People Party got four seats.
BJP and NPP were partners in the outgoing government but fought the assembly polls separately.

</excerpt>

New Delhi [India], March 3: BJP party created history on Thursday by returning to power in Tripura and the NDPP-BJP alliance swept the polls in Nagalanad. The BJP is also part of the sweepstakes to form government in Meghalaya having decided to extend support to the National People’s Party which emerged as the single-largest party with 26 seats.
BJP and NPP were partners in the outgoing government but had contested the polls separately. BJP’s performance in the assembly polls in the three northeastern states showed its continued dominance in the region, which was once a Congress stronghold. The outcome meant that there will be no change of government in the three northeastern states in the results declared on Thursday. Assembly polls in the three states were held last month.
The parties opposed to BJP did relatively better in the results of assembly bypolls.
The BJP which had created a big splash in 2018 elections by ousting the Left parties from power in Tripura, returned to power in the state with absolute majority.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 32 seats with a vote share of around 39 per cent. The Left parties and Congress had forged an alliance to keep BJP out of power in the border state but it did not yield results as in West Bengal earlier. CPI-M and Congerss are arch rivals in Kerala. Together polled around 33 per cent votes in Tripura and bagged 14 seats (CPI-M 11, Congress 3). The Left had contested on 47 and Congress on 13 seats.
The BJP tally is marginally lower than its number in 2018 election when it had won 36 seats in Tripura and IPFT had also done well.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that vote in Tripura was that for “progress and stability”.
“Thank you Tripura! This is a vote for progress and stability. @BJP4Tripura will continue to boost the state’s growth trajectory. I am proud of all Tripura BJP Karyakartas for their spectacular efforts at the grassroots,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
He later addressed BJP workers at party headquarters here over the resutls in the three northeastern states.
Chief Minister Manik Saha defeated Congress’ Asish Kumar Saha from the Town Bordowali seat by a margin of 1,257 votes.
In Nagaland, BJP secured 12 seats, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) won 25 seats.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged seven seats, National People’s Party (NPP) won five seats, Naga Peoples Front, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and Republican Party of India (Athawale) won two seats each. Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) got one seat.
BJP had earlier won a seat uncontested in the 60-member Nagaland assembly.
Nagaland Chief Minister and NDPP candidate Neiphiu Rio won from the Northern Angami seat.
In Meghalaya, National People’s Party (NPP) led by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma surprised its rivals by winning 26 seats. The party is poised to lead second successive government in the state. Election was held on 59 seats in the state.
United Democratic Party (UDP) bagged 11 seats.
Congress won five seats. Trinamool Congress, which had inducted all Congress MLAs in the previous assembly, also got five seats.
BJP, People’s Democratic Front and Hill State People’s Democratic Party bagged two seats each. Voice of the People Party got four seats. Two seats were won by independent candidates.
Congress won a seat each in the assembly bypolls in West Bengal, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar won Pune’s Kasba Assembly seat, considered a BJP bastion. Chinchwad seat was won by the BJP. These were the first elections since the Election Commission recognised the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the real Shiv Sena giving it the party name and symbol. The faction led by Uddhav Thackeray had supported Congress and NCP candidates on the two seats.
In Jharkhand, the assembly bypoll to Ramgarh seat was won by All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) an ally of BJP.
Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the party’s performance in Tripura and Nagaland and said it was a historic day for the northeast.
“A historic day for the Northeast. I thank Tripura for placing trust in BJP once again. It is a victory of pro-development politics that the BJP has delivered in Tripura under PM @narendramodi Ji’s leadership. Together we will move ahead and build a prosperous Tripura,” he said.
The BJP will hope to carry forward its election momentum in the six other assembly polls to be held later this year.

</excerpt>

The counting of votes in the Meghalaya Assembly elections will be held on Thursday amid tight security arrangements.

“All necessary arrangements have been made with respect to tomorrow. We have 13 counting centres across the state, 12 in all district headquarters, and one in Sohra Sub Division. 22 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies have been retained for purposes of ensuring 24×7 safeguard protocols in respect of the strong rooms containing the polled Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) of 3,419 polling stations in the 59 poll-going Assembly constituencies and will stay on till April 4 for any post-poll contingencies or emergencies,” said Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor.

The Meghalaya CEO said there will be three-tiered security arrangements, with CAPF guarding the innermost layer and state-armed police keeping vigil over the second and third layers.

The counting centres are all placed under CCTV and webcast surveillance during the entire period. There will be a total of 383 rounds of counting, with a maximum of nine rounds for the biggest assembly constituency, Mawlai in East Khasi Hills District, and four rounds for smaller ACs like Dalu in West Garo Hills District, according to the CEO.

According to the Election Commission, the counting in all 13 centres will commence at 8 a.m. on Thursday. The counting will initially begin with a postal ballot count for the first 30 minutes, followed by the counting of polled votes in the EVM Control Units. The CEO, accompanied by the District Electoral Officer (DEO) and Superintendent of Police, has already personally inspected the counting arrangements at the East Khasi Hills Counting Centre at Polo Grounds, Shillong, which has the state’s maximum number of 14 counting halls, one for each assembly constituency.

The West Garo Hills District Counting Centre caters to 11 assembly constituencies and is the second-largest counting centre in the state. The Election Commission has deployed 27 counting observers, and over 500 micro observers will also assist the counting observers at each table. Each table will have a counting observer assisted by four counting assistants.

In seven polling stations, there were cases of non-deletion of mock poll data. These include a polling station in East Jaintia Hills, Khliehriat AC, one in West Khasi Hills, Rambhai AC, two in East Garo hills, Songsak AC, two in South West Garo Hills, Salmanpara ACs and one in Mylliem AC. In the above polling stations, DEOs and ROs (returning officers) have been directed to strictly follow Election Commission protocols on counting.

Also, post-counting of EVMs, five polling stations will be selected at random through a draw of lots, and manual counting of five randomly selected EVMs will be undertaken as per ECI protocols. Additionally, concerned DEOs have issued necessary orders pertaining to traffic arrangements and victory processions post-counting in respect of their respective districts.

Ahead of the counting of votes for the Meghalaya assembly polls, Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) chief Conrad Sangma met Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Tuesday night. Notably, Sarma is the convenor of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). As per the report, it has been said that both Chief Ministers took part in a crucial meeting in a hotel in Guwahati, and the meeting lasted for half an hour. Following the meeting, the Meghalaya Chief Minister returned to Tura in the West Garo Hills.

Earlier on Tuesday, Meghalaya’s CM hinted at forming a post-poll alliance to form the government. The exit polls published by various media groups predicted that the northeastern state would have a hung house, with Sangma’s NPP emerging as the single-largest party. Following this, Conrad Sangma said that he would keep all options open to form a stable government.

“We will keep all our options open to form a stable government. We are happy to see the trend is in line as we expected to get more seats than we received last time,” said Sangma. Meghalaya recorded a voting percentage of over 76 percent on Monday. Polling was held at 3,419 polling stations across 59 Assembly constituencies in the state.

Of the 60 Assembly constituencies in Meghalaya, 36 fall in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions, while 24 are in the Garo Hills region.
