HAL Expansion Fuels State-Level Showdown Between Karnataka and Andhra

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) future has ignited a political battle between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Andhra Pradesh CM, N Chandrababu Naidu has proposed the construction of a greenfield facility of HAL in his state.

Karnataka, the home state to HAL’s principal infrastructure, has reacted aggressively and swiftly in the interim. Any plan that would alter or diminish the state’s critical place in India’s defense production infrastructure has been opposed by several Karnataka ministers.

Greenfield Proposal Sparks Tensions

At a recent meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, CM Naidu offered 10,000 acres of land for a potential HAL expansion near Lepakshi in Andhra Pradesh, barely 70 km from the Karnataka border. Interestingly, he specified that he had no desire to relocate any of the existing HAL units. Instead, his intention is to create space for indigenous systems and future defence platforms such as the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).

Significantly, the proposal looks inviting, sources who were present during the meeting say. Safety setbacks that are critical, and which could be harder to obtain in jammed Karnataka pockets, have sufficient space at the proposed site. Yet, the timing of the proposal and its political hue have created a lot of storm in Karnataka.

Karnataka Leaders Stand Firm

The Karnataka government has closed ranks in retort. No Chief Minister can alter HAL’s present operations in Bengaluru, said MB Patil, Large and Medium Industries Minister. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also announced that there would be no relocation during his tenure.

Further, Karnataka would shield HAL infrastructure at all costs, said Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. He underlined that Jawaharlal Nehru specifically selected Bengaluru for HAL because the city has a well-trained technical manpower. He also underlined HAL’s commitment to defense manufacturing by highlighting that the Congress state government had generously given land in Tumakuru for the company’s helicopter division.

Centre Silent Amid Political Heat

Karnataka leaders themselves have expressed their anger at the silence of the state’s MPs and Union Ministers. DK Shivakumar appealed to them to safeguard Karnataka’s interests and openly criticized their silence. The Medical Education and Skill Development Minister, Sharan Prakash Patil, took it one step ahead and made it clear that remaining quiet would be a betrayal of the economic interests and heritage of the state.

Worth noting is that Defense Minister Rajnath Singh sanctioned the model of execution of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project amid heightened tensions. Bengaluru remains to be the location of this critical project, with the Aeronautical Development Agency and HAL in collaboration, highlighting the city’s continued strategic importance.

Future of Tejas and AMCA at Stake

HAL is already expanding its capacity at the same time. The Indian Air Force has ordered the company to build 83 LCA Mk1A variants under a contract worth ₹6,500 crore. Also, additional land, infrastructure, and human resources will be required in the future projects like the AMCA and the Tejas Mk2.

The government will eventually have to consider other areas based on these demands. It is not clear whether that expansion goes into Andhra Pradesh or occurs in Karnataka.

Two states are in a high-stakes battle to ensure each one’s place in India’s defense manufacturing future due to the HAL expansion plan. Karnataka remains keen on retaining its long-standing position, despite the fresh chance being presented by Andhra Pradesh. The political and strategic battle is becoming more fierce as long as the Center does not take a stand.

KMF Responds To Andhra CM’s Allegations Of Animal Fat In Tirupati Laddu Prasadam

In response to allegations of animal fat in Tirupati laddu, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) clarified on Thursday that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board has not purchased ghee from them in the past four years. However, they confirmed that Nandhini Ghee had been supplied to the TTD during the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) regime under Chandrababu Naidu in Andhra Pradesh.

TDP Alleges Evidence of Adulteration

TDP’s national spokesperson, Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy, claimed that test reports indicate the presence of adulterated oil containing beef fat in the ghee. He further alleged that the ghee used in the laddus was contaminated with fish oil and fats from dead animals, including dogs. According to Reddy, the prasadam served to the deity was tainted with beef tallow, and this adulterated fat was also used in food offerings to Lord Venkateswara.

Reddy announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the TDP would present proof of these claims during a live session. “Supply of ghee to TTD Tirumala Devasthanam mixed with animal fat and fish oil going live at 4pm with proofs,” he posted.

The Controversy at a Glance

The controversy erupted when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, accused the previous YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government of using substandard ingredients, including animal fat, in the preparation of Tirupati laddu prasadam. Speaking at an NDA meeting in Amravati, Naidu said, “Even Tirumala laddu was made with substandard ingredients…they used animal fat instead of ghee.”

Naidu assured that since his administration took over, the temple now uses pure ghee, and steps have been taken to ensure the quality of the prasadam for devotees.

TDP vs YSRCP: Political Clash Over Religious Sentiments

TDP leaders, including Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh, criticized the YSRCP government for allegedly disrespecting the religious sentiments of devotees by using animal fat instead of ghee. Lokesh expressed shock at the allegations, stating, “The Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple at Tirumala is our most sacred temple. Shame on Jagan and the YSRCP government that couldn’t respect the religious sentiments of crores of devotees.”

YSRCP Denies Allegations

In response, Rajya Sabha MP and former chairman of the TTD, YV Subba Reddy, refuted Naidu’s claims, accusing him of using the controversy for political gain. Reddy said, “Naidu can go down to any level for the benefit of politics,” and challenged the Andhra Chief Minister to prove his allegations.

N Chandrababu Naidu Carries Ramoji Rao’s Remains At funeral; Video Goes Viral

TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu attended the last rites and funeral of Ramoji Rao on Sunday.

Ramoji Rao, the founder of Ramoji Film City and ETV Network, died on Saturday in Hyderabad at 87. His funeral procession began at Ramoji Film City. In a video shared by ANI on X, Naidu joined Ramoji’s family members and friends to carry his mortal remains.

Ramoji Rao received medical care at Star Hospital in the city and passed away at 3:45 am. He was admitted on June 5 due to high blood pressure and difficulty breathing. After undergoing surgery, he was placed on ventilator support. Unfortunately, his health declined, leading to his demise. His body was then moved to his residence at Ramoji Film City.

Several prominent political leaders and film personalities are expected to pay their last respects to the Padma Vibhushan awardee. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a post that read, “The passing away of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu is extremely saddening. He was a visionary who revolutionized Indian media. His rich contributions have left an indelible mark on journalism and the world of films. Through his noteworthy efforts, he set new standards for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment world.”

“Ramoji Rao Garu was extremely passionate about India’s development. I am fortunate to have got several opportunities to interact with him and benefit from his wisdom. Condolences to his family, friends and countless admirers during this difficult time. Om Shanti,” he added.

Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut: Protecting Constitution And Democracy Now Rests On Naidu And Kumar

As the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) prepares for its third term, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut emphasized that the responsibility to protect the Constitution and democracy lies with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) supremo Nitish Kumar.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Raut stated, “Now the biggest challenge is for Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar, who consider themselves worshippers and servants of democracy. With the government formed with their support, it is their responsibility to save the Constitution, law, and democracy.”

Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi met President Droupadi Murmu on Friday to stake his claim to form the government following a meeting of NDA leaders who elected him as their leader.

Addressing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s allegations regarding the stock market, Raut commented on the market’s volatility. “The way the share market was shaken is unnatural,” he said, alleging that influential businessmen and politicians allied with PM Modi manipulated the market for personal gain. “These businessmen from Gujarat are running the country, and their old connection with the share market means this will keep happening, and the country will be looted.”

Rahul Gandhi had previously claimed that the stock market’s behaviour around the election period was suspicious, with significant rises and falls coinciding with comments from senior government officials. He called for an inquiry into the matter, questioning why PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman provided investment advice to the public.

Gandhi highlighted that during a press conference on June 6, he observed unnatural market movements following “fake” exit polls, with a notable crash on June 4. The Indian stock market witnessed a significant surge today, following an initially lukewarm opening. Strong support from bullish investors emerged after TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu reaffirmed his party’s commitment to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) post-Lok Sabha election results.

Market Rally Driven by Political Clarity

Naidu’s statement, “TDP is firmly with the NDA,” came as a relief to investors. His affirmation dispelled widespread rumors that had caused uncertainty in the Indian stock market after the BJP failed to secure an absolute majority, falling short by around 20 seats. This clarity led to a robust recovery in the markets, with investors engaging in bottom fishing at lower levels.

Indices at New Highs

The Nifty 50 index reached an intraday high of 22,445, marking a rise of over 2%. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex climbed to an intraday peak of 73,851, a 1.90% increase from its previous close of 72,079. The Bank Nifty index also surged, touching 48,000 shortly after Naidu’s declaration.

Expert Insights

Avinash Gorakshkar, Head of Research at Profitmart Securities, highlighted the impact of political uncertainty on market performance. “The Lok Sabha Election results were below market estimates, which had anticipated a strong BJP-led government for a third term. The absence of an absolute majority raised doubts among investors, which were alleviated by Naidu’s statement.”

Despite the positive market response, experts advised caution. Sumeet Bagadia, Executive Director at Choice Broking, emphasized that the breach of the 22,100 to 22,200 mark by the Nifty 50 should not be viewed as a definitive trend reversal. “We need to wait for some more time, as the market may become bullish once the 50-stock index breaches its crucial hurdle of 22,500 on a closing basis,” he noted.

Naidu’s Commitment to NDA

Addressing the media after the BJP-led NDA secured a historic third consecutive term, Naidu reiterated his support for the alliance. “Andhra Pradesh voters have given a verdict for a better Andhra, and both TDP and BJP will work together to meet their expectations,” he stated.

Ahead of Lok Sabha Election 2024 NDA returns to former alliance with BJP

During the election season, late-night discussions are a common occurrence, and on Thursday evening, the BJP leadership engaged in lengthy conversations with two regional parties to solidify a potential alliance.

N Chandrababu Naidu, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and leader of the Telugu Desam Party, along with Pawan Kalyan, actor-turned-politician heading the Jana Sena, held talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding pre-poll tie-ups.

The TDP, having exited the BJP-led NDA in 2018 over the issue of special status for Andhra Pradesh, has shown interest in rejoining the coalition. Pawan Kalyan has played a role in facilitating the reconciliation between Naidu and the BJP.

With the BJP actively forming alliances to reach its target, the TDP-JS combination is on track for formal induction into the NDA. The intricacies of seat-sharing for both Lok Sabha and state elections are nearly finalized.

This new alliance provides the BJP an opportunity to establish a foothold in the southern state and increase its seat count in the general elections. Despite efforts to emerge as an alternative in Andhra Pradesh, the BJP has struggled in terms of electoral performance, lacking a single legislator in the 175-member assembly, with a vote share below 1% in the previous assembly elections.

In July, D Purandeswari was appointed as the state unit president with an aim to tap into Naidu’s vote bank. Daughter of the late NT Rama Rao, founder of TDP, Purandeswari is related to Naidu and belongs to the politically dominant Kamma community.

The BJP-led NDA governments have emphasized social welfare schemes and incentives for consumers in the last decade, creating a vote bank of beneficiaries. Notably, the government announced a subsidy for cooking gas, extending a ₹12,000 crore benefit to 102.7 million poor households by providing a ₹300 subsidy on cooking gas refills for an additional year until March 31, 2025.

Since May 21, 2022, the government has been providing budgetary support for a targeted subsidy of ₹200 per 14.2kg LPG cylinder for PMUY beneficiaries, allowing up to 12 refills a year.

Chandrababu Naidu reaches home in Vijayawada after interim bail

On Wednesday morning, N Chandrababu Naidu, the chief of the TDP and the former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, arrived at his Vijayawada residence, following his approval of temporary bail in a skill development case. His party supporters had gathered outside his home and greeted him warmly. On Tuesday, Naidu left Rajahmundry jail after being granted bail by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in relation to an alleged skill development case.

After walking out of the central cell, Chandrababu Naidu said, “When I was in trouble, you all came on the roads and prayed for me. I will never forget the affection shown to me, not only in Andhra Pradesh but also in Telangana and across the world.”
“In my 45 years of career, I haven’t committed any mistakes and will not let anyone do. All the political parties have supported me, all thanks to them,” he added.
Chandrababu Naidu was under 53 days of judicial custody. The interim bail has been granted for four weeks.
The TDP said that the ruling YSRCP has failed in its attempt to label Chandrababu Naidu as a criminal.

Skill development case: TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu permitted interim bail till November 24

In relation to the skill development case, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday granted temporary bail to N Chandrababu Naidu, the chief of the Telugu Desam Party and the former state chief minister, for a period of four weeks. Advocate Sunkara Krishnamurthy of the High Court has stated that the TDP chief has been granted interim bail with conditions through November 24.

For health reasons, Chandrababu Naidu was granted bail. On November 24, he is expected to turn himself in. On November 10, the court will hear arguments regarding the primary bail petition. The TDP leader has been told not to take part in any other activities save for his hospital checkups. Naidu was also given an order by the High Court to refrain from engaging in political and media activities.

The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on September 9 in connection with the Rs multi-crore skill development scam case, leading to apolitical turmoil in the state with several TDP leaders alleging that the arrest was nothing but a political “witch-hunt” and that Naidu was held on the basis of false allegations.
Besides, the skill development case, Naidu has been named as an accused in two other graft cases– the Fibernet scam case, and the Inner Ring Road scam case.
Meanwhile on Monday, the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) registered another case against Chandrababu Naidu in connection with allegations of illegal licensing of liquor companies in the previous government.

Andhra Pradesh HC rejects anticipatory bail petitions of TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu in three other cases

The anticipatory bail petitions of former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu in three corruption cases were dismissed by the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday. The TDP leader and former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu’s bail requests in the Inner Ring Road, Fiber Net, and Angallu 307 cases were denied by the Andhra Pradesh High Court, according to attorney Krishna Murthy. The Vijayawada Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) court previously postponed making a decision on Chandrababu Naidu’s bail request. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief’s detention in the alleged multi-million dollar skill development scam case was extended by the ACB court on Thursday until October 19.

Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) last month in connection with the alleged multi-crore skill development scam case, leading to political turmoil in the state with several TDP leaders alleging that the arrest was nothing but a political “witch-hunt” and that Naidu was held on the basis of false allegations.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department chief N Sanjay said that Chandrababu Naidu was the prime conspirator in the AP Skill development scam adding that Naidu in his capacity had orchestrated the whole idea of corruption during his tenure as Chief Minister.

Money trail very clear, says Andhra CID on Naidu’s arrest

In the midst of demonstrations over the arrest of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chairman N Chandrababu Naidu, the Additional DG of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Sanjay, said on Wednesday that the money trail in the multi-crore skill development scam is “very clear.”

According to the Andhra CID, it is a “very clear case of government funds transferred and the project of purpose never happened.”

“In this case, a government corporation was formed and it was exclusively formed for this purpose of skill development and the proposal was moved by some private individuals…The money trail is very clearly seen,” the additional DG of CID told news agency.

He added, “You see the role of the ED also in this when they moved in and arrested a few people. So this is a very clear case of government money being transferred and the project itself never happened… How the money went into shell companies and all, is again part of the investigation. So further investigation will reveal the exact end-to-end tie-ups.”

On September 9, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court in Vijayawada ordered the TDP chairman to be held in judicial detention for 14 days in connection with an alleged skill development corporation scam.

The Andhra Pradesh high court adjourned on Wednesday Naidu’s petition to quash the charges brought against him. The court, however, ordered that the CID not take Naidu into prison until September 18.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the death of seven Telugu Desam Party workers in the stampede at TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu’s public meeting. PM Modi has announced Rs. 2 Lakhs to ex-gratia and Rs 50 thousand to each injured. “Pained by the mishap at a public meeting in Nellore, AP. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lahks from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and the injured would be given Rs. 50,000,” Prime Minister’s Office tweeted. Earlier on Wednesday, a scuffle broke out between party workers in Kandukuru of Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore in which seven people lost their lives.
