</excerpt>

The humanitarian disaster after the Myanmar’s earthquake is getting out of hand. The 7.4-magnitude earthquake on March 28 claimed 3,471 lives, injured thousands, and left many more homeless. Survivors are now confronted with a triple crisis—natural disaster, rapidly spreading disease threats, and renewed conflict. Unseasonal rains have inundated overcrowded camps, and fears of cholera and other lethal waterborne diseases have been raised. Meanwhile, the military resumed its attacks, shattering a temporary ceasefire and cutting off aid to hardest-hit regions.

Relentless Rains Fuel Health Crisis

Torrential rains saturated quake-devastated regions at the weekend, aggravating the conditions of those who took shelter under tarpaulins or slept outdoors. High temperatures and water stagnation have increased the risk of disease. Relief agencies are worried that cholera would spread quickly in already traumatized communities.

Despite attempts by India, China, and ASEAN nations to deliver relief, much of the devastated area is still out of reach in Myanmar. Destroyed infrastructure, lack of communication, and continued fighting keep aid workers away. Whole villages are isolated, and basic commodities haven’t reached many who need them most.

Tom Fletcher, the UN’s highest humanitarian official, has urged rapid, concerted international action. “We must deliver tents and hope to survivors as they try to rebuild their shattered lives,” he said. His comments echo mounting fears that additional people will perish—not from the earthquake itself, but from the breakdown of response systems that should be assisting them to recover.

Ceasefire Crumbles as Military Escalates Violence

The quake hit a country already devastated by civil war. More than 3 million have been displaced since the 2021 coup, and public services have all but disintegrated. A ceasefire declared last week had briefly given hopes of a lull in fighting. But airstrikes resumed as quickly as they had stopped, attacking civilians in Karenni and Shan states.

Free Burma Rangers documented a minimum of seven air raids since the ceasefire. The attacks killed civilians and made relief delivery virtually impossible. The junta is still preventing relief efforts in opposition-held areas, making an already enormous crisis into a humanitarian horror.

Myanmar’s crisis is now not just a natural disaster. It’s a human made emergency that calls for swift and firm global intervention.

PM Modi urges lasting ceasefire and inclusive elections.
</excerpt>

The toll from the powerful earthquake that hit Myanmar has risen to 3,354, with 4,850 injured and 220 remaining missing, state media reports said on Saturday. As relief and rescue operations go on, United Nations aid chief Tom Fletcher thanked humanitarian and community organizations for their front-line work in responding to disaster.

Fletcher, who stayed overnight in Mandalay, close to the epicenter of the quake, tweeted, “Humanitarian and community organizations led the response to the earthquake with determination, skill and courage. Many themselves were themselves left without a thing, and yet continued going out to assist survivors.”

Min Aung Hlaing Returns After Foreign Summit, Meets Indian PM Modi

Myanmar military junta leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has returned to Naypyitaw after a foreign trip for a rare visit abroad to a regional summit in Bangkok. At the event, he met bilaterally with the leaders of Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and India.

State media announced that Min Aung Hlaing reaffirmed his government’s commitment to having “free and fair” elections in December when he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi Calls for Permanent Ceasefire, Credible Elections

In response, Modi underscored the need for peace and democratic credibility.

Mr. Modi called on Myanmar’s military to make the post-quake ceasefire in the country’s civil war permanent and to hold “inclusive and credible” elections, according to an Indian foreign affairs spokesperson on Friday.

Most critics have, however, rejected the next set of elections as a facade aimed at assisting the military in maintaining its grip over the country through proxy candidates.

Civil War, Humanitarian Emergency, and Aid Blockades

Since the February 2021 military coup that overthrew Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar has descended into civil war, with more than 3 million displaced and more than one-third of the country’s population requiring humanitarian assistance, the U.N. says.

The UN Human Rights Office has also expressed fears that the junta is cutting off assistance to parts of the country that do not back its control. The agency is looking into 53 alleged military attacks, including 16 abuses after a ceasefire was announced on Wednesday.

The junta spokesperson has still to comment on these claims.

</excerpt>

Buried beneath his hotel bed for five days in the rubble, two things helped teacher Tin Maung Htwe survive Myanmar Earthquake: outdated school teachings and his own urine.

Survival Instincts Kick In During Myanmar Earthquake

The headmaster of the primary school was attending a training course in Sagaing, nearest to the epicentre, when the 7.7-magnitude quake hit.

The 47-year-old recalled a decades-old school lesson to take cover under a bed if the world begins to shake.

“As soon as I went under the bed, the whole hotel fell down and was blocked. All I could afford was to say ‘save me’,” he said.

“I was shouting ‘save me, save me’.”

The Swal Taw Nann guesthouse where he was lodged was a heap of bricks and bent metal strips, the shattered husk of its top floor lying on the wreckage of those below, and Tin Maung Htwe in a ground floor room below it all.

“I felt as though I was in hell,” he said weakly, an oxygen tube running to his nose and two intravenous drips into his reduced frame.

“My body was burning hot and all I needed was water. I couldn’t get that water from anywhere.

“So I have to refill the water my body needed with fluids coming out of my body.”

‘I Am Free’ Says Myanwar Earthquake Survivor

The severity of the destruction in Sagaing, which is nearer the epicentre, is much worse than that of its neighbour Mandalay. While far lesser percentage of buildings have been blown to rubble in Mandalay.

Destructive gouges have been dug in the road to the big city choking traffic and impeding rescue workers. The Ava bridge between the two across the Irrawaddy is out. While one end of six of its 10 spans lying in the calm water.

Locals reported the Myanmar Red Cross were retrieving bodies from the location and did not anticipate finding anyone alive. But when they found him, and a Malaysian rescue team was brought in to rescue him.

A Joyous Rescue In Myanmar Earthquake

One of eight siblings, his sister Nan Yone, 50, was one of a number of his relatives who waited and watched as they labored at the site.

“I can’t describe it,” said Nan Yone of his rescue on Wednesday.

“I was dancing, crying and beating my chest because I was so happy.”

When he arrived at Sagaing’s main hospital he gave her a thumbs-up and told her: “Sister I am very good.”

“His will is very strong and I think that is why he survived,” she said on the day he was rescued.

While she talked nurses attended to her half-conscious brother on an outdoor gurney, his head lolling every now and then from side to side.

Nobody is being treated in the facility indoors, out of fear that an aftershock will destroy more.

A New Path Ahead

“I am glad I am free now, I wouldn’t be able to do anything if I was dead. I didn’t die so now I can do whatever I wish.” Tin Maung Htwe told.

He wants to go back to his work as a schoolteacher. But he added: “I am considering becoming a Buddhist monk.”

While international aid arrives, the death toll continues to rise, and conflict threatens relief efforts.
</excerpt>

Myanmar rescue teams are still searching for survivors after a deadly 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the nation five days ago. In a dramatic twist, a 26-year-old hotel employee, Naing Lin Tun, was rescued alive from the rubble of a collapsed structure in Naypyitaw on early Wednesday. The rescue, carried out by a combined Turkish and national team, lasted more than nine hours.

Rescue workers utilized an endoscopic camera to find Naing Lin Tun buried in the rubble before slowly pulling him out through a hole in the ground. Dust-covered and visibly frail, he seemed to be conscious as paramedics gave him an IV drip before taking him to the hospital. His survival after 108 hours has offered a glimmer of hope amid the rising death toll.

State broadcaster MRTV reports the quake has killed a minimum of 2,886 and injured 4,639, although independent accounts indicate figures may be even higher.

Widespread Devastation and Regional Impact

The devastating earthquake, which hit midday on Friday, has left thousands of houses destroyed, bridges fallen, and roads blocked. The devastation added to the prevailing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, in which more than 3 million people were displaced as a result of internal strife.

The earthquake also caused an impact in neighboring Thailand, in which a Bangkok under-construction high-rise building collapsed. There were 22 people confirmed dead by Bangkok authorities, with 34 others wounded in the construction site.

Ongoing Civil War in Myanmar and Reports of Attacks on Aid Convoys

Myanmar’s political unrest has also made relief efforts more difficult. The Three Brotherhood Alliance, a dominant coalition of militias that has taken vast amounts of land from the military, announced a unilateral one-month ceasefire to support humanitarian operations. Nevertheless, fighting continues in some pockets.

A recent occurrence was the reported attack on a Chinese Red Cross convoy with relief for Mandalay. Myanmar’s military was blamed for firing on a convoy of nine Red Cross trucks late Tuesday near Ohn Ma Tee village in Shan State by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, which is a militia group under the Brotherhood Alliance. The military junta accused the security forces of opening fire only in the form of warning shots when an unidentified convoy failed to stop.

Chinese Foreign Ministry official Guo Jiakun told us that aid shipments had landed safely in Myanmar but said nothing about the purported attack. This ongoing violence demonstrates the difficulties the humanitarian groups, trying to send relief to battered communities, now face.

Aid Response International to Myanmar

International relief is starting to reach Myanmar as nations commit money.

Australia: Promised an additional $4.5 million worth of aid in addition to its previous $1.25 million commitment.

India: Sent two Navy vessels with supplies and deployed 200 rescue personnel.

China: Sent 270 rescue workers.

Russia: Sent 212 rescue personnel.

UAE: Donated 122 personnel.

United States: USAID deployed a three-person assessment team and committed $2 million in emergency aid.

However, logistical difficulties and a deficiency of infrastructure in certain areas are hindering the provision of aid to outlying regions. Numerous communities lack electricity, cellular networks, or roads, complicating the process of estimating the extent of destruction.

The Extent of Damage Beyond Major Cities

Accounts from areas beyond urban centers report heavy casualties and damage.

In Singu township, about 65 km (40 miles) north of Mandalay, 27 gold miners were killed in a cave-in, according to the independent Democratic Voice of Burma.
In Inle Lake, northeast of the capital, many residents died when their stilt homes collapsed into the water, as reported by the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar.

As rescue efforts intensify, aid is urgently needed.
</excerpt>

A catastrophic earthquake in Myanmar has killed more than 2,000 people, with rescue efforts ongoing amidst the wreckage. The strong quake, which hit the Southeast Asian country on Friday, has left whole communities in shambles, with rescuers, sniffer dogs, and paramedics rushing to find survivors buried under the debris. Yet, with every passing hour, hopes of survival are dwindling as the golden rescue window narrows.

Survivors Start to Surface from the Rubble

Amid the devastation, survival stories are starting to emerge, providing a ray of hope amidst unprecedented destruction. A video shared on social media captures an elderly woman and her two teenage granddaughters pinned inside a small air pocket under the wreckage of their house. The girls, using a butter knife, pounded the concrete in a desperate attempt to get the attention of rescuers. The group was rescued after being stuck for a traumatic 15 hours.

2 girls and their grandmother keep calm while trapped under rubble in the Myanmar earthquake. They’ve been rescued, but many are still missing.

My heart aches imagining their terror—the crushing weight, the desperate gasps for air during Myanmar’s devastating earthquake. But… pic.twitter.com/QZTaybBTYj

— Yelisaveta Petrov (@YelisavetaPaUSA) March 31, 2025

Two women were similarly stranded for five horrifying hours under the wreckage of a hotel building that had collapsed in Mandalay. In an interview with CNN, the women recounted their frightening ordeal. “We were trapped in total darkness, but the good thing is we had a phone and we could use its light to see. If we didn’t have that, we could have died. We could see to clear rubble from on top of each other,” one of the women explained. Another woman said, “While being trapped, we learned that nothing is permanent, and the most important thing to do before death is to live a happy life and to do many good deeds. Don’t do bad things, because karma will follow you.”

Devastating Losses Amid Miracles of Survival

Though the earthquake triggered instances of miraculous rescues, it unleashed tremendous destruction across Myanmar. Very sadly, more than 200 Buddhist monks were murdered when a monastery toppled, and a preschool classroom collapsed, killing 50 children. Further, at least 700 Muslims were reported to have died when mosques collapsed during prayers for Ramadan.

Forgotten Need for Relief in the Wake

As rescue efforts continue, aid organizations are moving into the worst-affected parts of Myanmar to deliver critical relief, such as food, water, and shelter for survivors. The humanitarian disaster has been complicated by the long-running civil conflict in Myanmar, which has been making it increasingly hard for relief to reach its intended recipients. The Myanmar junta’s tight grip on communication networks, coupled with destruction to infrastructure like bridges and roads, has made relief efforts even more difficult.

The United Nations said that in the worst-affected areas, communities are finding it difficult to fulfill their minimum needs. “In the hardest-hit areas …communities struggle to meet their basic needs, such as access to clean water and sanitation, while emergency teams work tirelessly to locate survivors and provide life-saving aid,” a UN agency said in a statement.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) emphasized the necessity of shelter, food, water, and medicine in such locations as Mandalay, which is close to the epicenter of the earthquake. “Having lived through the terror of the earthquake, people now fear aftershocks and are sleeping outside on roads or in open fields,” said an IRC staffer in Mandalay. “There is a critical need for tents since even those who have houses intact are too afraid to sleep in them.”

Magnitude of the Quake

The earthquake, which struck at lunchtime on Friday, was the most powerful to hit Myanmar in more than a century. The 7.7 magnitude quake has caused widespread destruction, toppling both ancient pagodas and modern buildings alike. As rescue teams continue to search through the debris, the death toll has risen to at least 2,065, with more than 3,900 people reported injured and at least 270 still missing.

A Nation in Crisis

Myanmar is now dealing with a mammoth task following the deadliest earthquake in the country’s history. Aid officials and volunteers still pour into the stricken districts, but the extent of damage and the problem of reaching disaster victims indicate how bad the situation is. Despite all efforts aimed at locating the survivors, the country remains weeping over its immense losses amid the still-evolving tragedy.

</excerpt>

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has published satellite images of the extensive damage caused by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar and shook bordering nations on Friday.

High-Resolution Imaging by Cartosat-3 of ISRO

Employing its most advanced Earth imaging satellite, the Cartosat-3, which has a camera resolution of less than 50 centimetres, ISRO was able to take pictures from a height of 500 kilometres above the Earth. The photos show extensive damage, such as the collapse of an enormous bridge across the Irrawaddy River, destruction of Mandalay University, and collapse of the Ananda Pagoda.

ISRO Uses A Rarely Advanced Satellite Named Cartosat-3

As per ISRO, Cartosat-3, which was launched in 2019, is a third-generation agile advanced Earth imaging satellite. ISRO issues images from this highly advanced satellite very rarely.

The National Remote Sensing Centre, which is part of ISRO, said that post-disaster images of Cartosat-3 were taken on Saturday over Mandalay and Sagaing in Myanmar. Cartosat-3 data from March 18, taken over the same region, were also utilised for cross-comparison and damage assessment. Extensive damage to infrastructure in Mandalay city was noticed.

The Earthquake and Its Aftermath

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar on Friday and was followed by a powerful aftershock with a magnitude of 6.4. The epicentre occurred at a depth of 10 km along the Sagaing-Mandalay border. Mandalay, the country’s second largest city, has been severely hit.

The earthquake also affected the Myanmar capital, Naypyidaw, and other areas, causing infrastructure, roads, and residential buildings to collapse. The Earthquake was not only felt in Myanmar but also in neighboring countries. The Earthquake was felt in areas such as northern Thailand, where some areas experienced damage.

Widespread Damage in Mandalay and Sagaing

Satellite imagery reveals extensive damage in Mandalay. The Images show prominent landmarks like Sky Villa, Phayani Pagoda, Mahamuni Pagoda, Ananda Pagoda, and the University of Mandalay being completely or partially destroyed.

In the city of Sagaing, the Ma Shi Khana Pagoda, some monasteries, and other structures were also badly damaged.

Collapse of the Historic Ava Bridge

The earthquake resulted in the collapse of the historic Ava (InnWa) Bridge spanning the Irrawaddy River, off Inn Wa City. Flood plains of the Irrawaddy River also exhibited cracks and related liquefaction in the satellite imagery.

Seismic Activity and the Sagaing Fault

ISRO’s damage assessment report pointed out that Myanmar is situated close to the convergent boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Wherein the Indian Plate has a northward movement of approximately 5 cm per year.

Furthermore, Myanmar is located close to a number of minor fault zones. These fault zones include the Sagaing Fault, a major active strike-slip fault that passes through central Myanmar. The earthquake was probably triggered by the release of stress that had built up along the Sagaing Fault or its secondary faults. India was among the first nations to send rescue teams and offer support to Myanmar following the disaster.

</excerpt>

The number of deaths from Myanmar’s catastrophic earthquake rose to 2,056 while over 3,900 others were injured, the country’s ruling junta said on Monday. Another 270 are missing, and with this, the government has issued a week-long national mourning period. In honor of the deceased, national flags will be kept at half-mast until April 6.

Rescue Efforts Gradually Slow Down in Mandalay

Mandalay, Myanmar‘s second-largest city with a population of more than 1.7 million, is still one of the hardest-hit areas. But rescue efforts are slowly winding down, underlining the sheer extent of devastation.

Aung Myint Hussein, administrator of Mandalay’s Sajja North mosque, said the situation was “so dire that it’s hard to express what is happening.”

Thousands Homeless, Sleeping on Streets

With the collapse of buildings into rubble and the ongoing aftershocks, Mandalay residents had to camp outside on the roads for the third night in succession. While many were able to find refuge inside tents, countless others, including small children, slept on bedding spread across roads in the hopes of avoiding destruction from collapse.

Foreign Nationals Among the Victims

The quake also killed a number of foreign nationals. Three Chinese and two French citizens were among the dead, AFP reported, citing China’s state media and the French Foreign Ministry.

Scope of Disaster Still Undetermined

Because of extensive communication disruptions, the extent of the damage is still unclear, and authorities anticipate further increase in the death toll as relief efforts continue.

Gigantic 7.7 Earthquake Spreads Destruction Beyond Myanmar

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck with huge cracks in roads, collapsed buildings, and sent strong tremors through China, Thailand, Vietnam, and India’s eastern regions.

In the Thai capital, Bangkok, a half-built 30-storey building toppled over, while at least 19 people were killed.

</excerpt>

The death count in Myanmar after the catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit on Friday (March 28) has increased to 1,700. Rescuers, with limited equipment, are still pulling bodies from the debris in hard-hit cities as of Sunday. With hand-clearing of debris, authorities are against time to rescue survivors.

As per the announcement of the ruling junta, approximately 3,400 individuals have been wounded, with some 300 reported missing.

Mandalay in Shambles

Mandalay, which is the epicenter of the earthquake, has been severely damaged, with thousands of buildings, bridges, and communication lines in shambles. There are reports of hundreds of dead still trapped under the debris, and hopes of rescuing survivors are fading.

The overpowering stench of rotting corpses is now in the air, pointing towards a drastic rise in casualties since the city is being cleaned step by step over the coming weeks or months.

Hospitals Overloaded, Supply Scarcity

Medical centers, with their scanty resources already overwhelmed, find themselves incapable of catering to the scores of hurt victims. The hospitals are extremely short-staffed, medicines short, and running low on all basic supplies.

Cara Bragg, Yangon manager for Catholic Relief Services, emphasized the crisis:

“It’s mainly been local volunteers, local people who are just trying to find their loved ones. I’ve also seen reports that now some countries are sending search and rescue teams up to Mandalay to support the efforts, but hospitals are struggling to cope with the influx of injured people, there’s a shortage of medical supplies, and people are struggling to find food and clean water,” she said.

International Aid Arrives

Foreign assistance, especially from India and China which are neighbors, has started to pour in. On Saturday, India sent two C-17 military transport planes to Naypyitaw, bringing a field hospital unit and 120 staff. The team will set up a 60-bed emergency treatment facility in Mandalay.

Prioritization in Mandalay and Naypyitaw

Most relief work is centered in Mandalay and the capital city of Naypyitaw, but few details are emerging from other hit areas.

Bragg was alarmed at the mounting cost, and said:

“We’re getting reports of hundreds of individuals stuck in various locations. Currently we’re at 1,600 (confirmed deaths), and we don’t have much information coming in, but you’ve got to assume that it’s going to be growing in the thousands on the basis of what the effects are. This is just anecdotal data at this point.”

The authorities persevere in conducting rescue efforts and the international community intensifies its response to the tragedy.

Two additional ships, currently stationed at Sri Vijaya Puram under the Andaman and Nicobar Command, will follow soon.

Multiple Aircraft Deployed for Rescue

India launched Operation Brahma in the early hours of Saturday. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared updates on X, stating, “@indiannavy ships INS Satpura & INS Savitri are carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid and headed for the port of Yangon.”

According to Jaiswal, one aircraft departed early morning, followed by two more sorties. Additionally, two aircraft carrying the field hospital unit were set to leave from Agra later in the day.

Indian Army’s Medical Task Force Ready for Action

The Ministry of Defence announced that a 118-member team from the elite Shatrujeet Brigade Medical Responders, led by Lieutenant Colonel Jagneet Gill, is ready for deployment. The Airborne Angels Task Force specializes in advanced medical and surgical care in disaster zones.

Furthermore, the Indian Army will set up a 60-bed Medical Treatment Centre. This facility will provide trauma care, emergency surgeries, and essential medical services to support Myanmar’s overwhelmed healthcare system.

India’s Commitment to Immediate Aid

Later in the evening, Jaishankar updated on X, “#OperationBrahma A 118-member Indian Army Field Hospital unit is en route to Mandalay from Agra. The team will assist in providing first aid and emergency medical services to the people of Myanmar.”

Widespread Devastation in Myanmar

A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, causing massive destruction. Reports confirm that at least 1,002 people have died in Myanmar. India, which shares a 1,643-km border with Myanmar, swiftly responded to the crisis.

According to Jaiswal, India’s ambassador in Myanmar is currently in Nay Pyi Taw, coordinating relief operations. So far, no casualties have been reported among the Indian community there.

India’s Track Record as a First Responder

India has consistently played a leading role in disaster relief. Jaiswal recalled India’s swift assistance after Cyclone Yagi struck Myanmar last year. He emphasized that the destruction caused by the recent earthquake is far more severe.

He also highlighted the significance of Operation Brahma’s name: “Brahma is the God of creation. As we help Myanmar rebuild after this devastation, this name carries deep meaning.”

India’s Humanitarian Supplies Reach Myanmar

The first relief aircraft, carrying 15 tonnes of essential supplies, left from Hindon Air Force Base in Ghaziabad at 3 AM. It landed in Yangon at 8 AM (IST), where India’s ambassador handed over the supplies to Yangon’s Chief Minister.

The aid package includes:

Tents, blankets, and tarpaulins

Sleeping bags and solar lamps

Essential medicines and food packets

Kitchen sets and generators

Meanwhile, two aircraft carrying 80 NDRF search and rescue personnel, equipment, and trained canines are also en route to Myanmar’s Nay Pyi Taw.

PM Modi Reaffirms India’s Support

Soon after the disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. He expressed India’s deep condolences and assured full support. “We stand in solidarity with the government and the people of Myanmar. We will provide all necessary relief and assistance to help them recover from this calamity,” Modi conveyed.

India’s Strong Coordination with Myanmar

As the relief operation continues, India’s Navy is actively working with Myanmar’s authorities for a smooth operation. Jaiswal also confirmed that India’s embassy in Myanmar is maintaining close contact with the Indian community, ensuring their safety and well-being.

India’s Rapid Response to Global Disasters

India has a strong history of providing immediate disaster aid. Jaiswal recalled Operation Dost, launched in 2023 after the devastating earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria. “Being the first responder is part of our policy. When we say Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The world is one family), we mean it and act on it.”

NDRF Gears Up for Critical Hours Ahead

According to NDRF Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Mohsen Shahedi, the next 24-48 hours are crucial for their rescue efforts. The field hospital team, which also participated in Operation Dost, remains on standby for further deployment if needed.

Last Friday, Myanmar was rocked by two massive earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.4 in magnitude. The tremors extended to Bangkok, where a Korean family found themselves trapped on the 31st floor of a high-rise building. </excerpt>

India has quickly deployed its military forces and disaster relief teams to help Myanmar following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that has killed more than 1,000 people. The government initiated Operation Brahma, a massive humanitarian operation, to provide vital assistance, such as relief supplies, a field hospital, and an 80-strong search and rescue team.

India’s Quick Response to the Crisis

Immediately after the quake hit Myanmar on Friday afternoon, India put its Army, Navy, Air Force, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on standby mode for emergency intervention. The first Indian Air Force (IAF) transport aircraft left Hindon airbase by 3 a.m. Saturday morning carrying 15 tonnes of relief materials in the form of food and medicaments. The flight landed in Yangon by 8 a.m. (IST), paving the way for a swift humanitarian intervention.

At 7:30 p.m. IST, a C-130 transport plane brought in the 80-strong NDRF search and rescue team to Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar, which was still reeling from destroyed infrastructure. The team, the first foreign rescue team to arrive in the capital, will be deployed in Mandalay on Sunday—one of the worst-hit regions.

Multi-Agency Relief Mission

IAF intended to undertake five sorties on Saturday via C-130J and C-17 military transport aircraft in order to dispatch search and rescue teams with canine squads, rescuers’ gear, and an 118-person military field hospital. Four warships of the Indian Navy are also sailing towards relief materials carrying 50 tonnes of material from Port Blair and Visakhapatnam.

Operation Brahma: India’s Commitment to Regional Assistance

The operation, code-named Operation Brahma, represents India’s commitment to regional solidarity and humanitarian assistance. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India’s commitment to being the first responder during crises. “It is part of our policy to be the first responder. When we say ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or the world is one family, we also want to mean it. We want to prove that by action,” Jaiswal said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself contacted Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, conveying condolences and support on behalf of India. “As a friendly neighbor and close friend, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar at this trying time,” Modi posted on social media. He assured that humanitarian aid, disaster relief items, and search & rescue teams were being sent under #OperationBrahma.

Spoke with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake.
Mandalay City, with 1.7 million people, was left severely devastated, with numerous buildings brought down to rubble. The absence of the necessary equipment to aid rescue has made India’s specialist rescue teams and high-tech equipment a key component of relief work.

NDRF Deputy Inspector General Mohsen Shahedi informed that the team would become functional in 24 to 48 hours, the golden hour for rescuing trapped survivors. A second standby NDRF team is in reserve in Kolkata and can be deployed if necessary.

Indian Army’s Field Hospital Ready for Deployment

The 118-bed Army field hospital, to go into operations by Sunday, consists of trained medical teams, surgical units, anesthetists, orthopedic surgeons, and X-ray facilities. The contingent deployed from Agra previously participated in Operation Dost during the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake relief efforts.

Brigadier HS Mavi of Military Operations established that there would be six medical officers, two of them women, in the field hospital. The staff is ready to divide into small teams if needed, and other medical teams are in reserve.

#OperationBrahma gets underway.

First tranche of humanitarian aid from India has reached the Yangon Airport in Myanmar.

The Indian Navy is also in the forefront of relief operations, with four warships carrying relief supplies. Naval Operations Commodore Raghu Nair confirmed that the first ship, with 10 tonnes of relief material, left at 2 a.m. on Saturday, and another at 2 p.m. The ships will arrive at Yangon Port by March 31, when two more warships will resume relief operations.

Earthquake Devastation and Mounting Death Toll

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit northwest of Sagaing City, followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock, causing widespread destruction. Myanmar’s ruling military junta confirmed 1,002 fatalities in Mandalay alone, with another 2,400 injured. Ten deaths were also reported in Bangkok, Thailand.

India has developed a large disaster relief capacity since its major contribution to post-2004 Indian Ocean tsunami relief operations. The IAF’s C-130 and C-17 heavy-lift transport aircraft have improved the nation’s capacity to airlift relief supplies, while the Navy’s warships have been instrumental in transporting aid and evacuating civilians.

India had, in September 2023, conducted Operation Sadbhav to help Myanmar in relief from Typhoon Yagi by airlifting 53 tonnes of assistance just hours after receiving Myanmar’s request. Likewise, India started Operation Dost in February 2023 to help Türkiye and Syria with relief from a powerful earthquake, deploying 250 people, expertise, and more than 135 tonnes of relief materials aboard five C-17 aircraft.

Relief Efforts Continued and Plans for Further Support

India has already dispatched its first tranche of aid, comprising:

Blankets, tarpaulins, and tents

Sleeping bags and hygiene kits

Solar lamps and generators

Water purifiers and ready-to-eat food

Essential medicines and medical supplies

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar pledged ongoing support and said, “We will continue to monitor the developments and more aid will follow.” The Indian Embassy in Myanmar is in close coordination with the authorities there and in touch with the Indian community of 60,000 citizens in Myanmar.

This is the most powerful earthquake to hit Myanmar in over a century, and officials expect the death toll to rise further as disrupted communication hampers updates. As India leads Operation Brahma, the nation once again asserts its position as a regional first responder during times of crisis.

</excerpt>

A Thai woman gave birth to a baby girl amid the chaos resulting from a strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar on Friday. The earthquake shook buildings up to Bangkok, and hospitals were compelled to evacuate patients to a safer place.

Kanthong Saenmuangshin, 36, was at the Police General Hospital in Thailand for a routine checkup when the quake struck. As the earthquake rocked the building, hospital workers made a mad dash to evacuate patients, including Kanthong, who unexpectedly entered labor.

India launched ‘Operation Brahma’ to provide disaster relief, including search and rescue teams. The death toll has surpassed 1,000, with thousands injured and widespread destruction reported.
</excerpt>

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Myanmar’s military chief Min Aung Hlaing on Saturday, offering his deepest sympathies for lives lost in the devastating earthquake. Posting his message on social media site X, Modi reiterated India’s resolve to help its neighbor in this crisis.

India’s Support and ‘Operation Brahma’

“As a close friend and neighbor, India stands with the people of Myanmar at this trying moment,” Modi tweeted on X. To support Myanmar, India has quickly initiated ‘Operation Brahma,’ under which disaster relief material, humanitarian aid, and search-and-rescue teams are being quickly dispatched. “Disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance, search & rescue teams are being expeditiously sent to the affected areas as part of #OperationBrahma,” he further added. Under this operation, India has already supplied 15 tonnes of relief materials to Myanmar.

Death Toll Tops 1,000

The catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake, which hit Myanmar on Friday near Mandalay, resulted in an increasing death toll, which stands at more than 1,000. The government reported 1,002 deaths, 2,376 injured, and 30 others missing, with more numbers expected to rise. Widespread destruction was caused by the earthquake, leaving buildings in ruins, destroying roads and bridges, and rupturing a dam.

Emergency responders worked on Saturday in Myanmar’s capital city of Naypyidaw to reopen roads, though power, phone, and internet communications remained down across much of the region. Government-owned housing blocks, some of the worst-hit places, were closed by officials.

Impact in Thailand

The powerful earthquake also caused shaking in neighboring Thailand, particularly greater Bangkok, which is inhabited by about 17 million residents. Tremors caused extensive damage, with six deaths and 26 injuries confirmed by city authorities, as well as 47 others remaining missing—most from a construction site close to the Chatuchak market.

As heavy machinery was rolled in to remove the rubble, hopes for those remaining unaccounted for dwindled. Damage has been reported in northern Thailand, including Chiang Mai, where residential homes, temples, and hospitals were badly damaged structurally. Bangkok, however, is the only city with confirmed victims.

Meanwhile, strong tremors were felt in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand. The Indian Embassy in Thailand reassured that no Indian national has been affected so far. “After powerful earthquake tremors recorded in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand, the Embassy is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Thai authorities. So far, no untoward incident involving any Indian citizen has been reported,” the statement read. The embassy urged Indian nationals to contact the emergency helpline for assistance.

Since Friday, Myanmar has endured 14 aftershocks. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the tremors ranged between magnitudes 3 and 5. The strongest aftershock, measuring 6.7, hit just 10 minutes after the main quake.

The disaster has caused severe damage, and many areas remain inaccessible. Roads are blocked, making rescue efforts difficult. Aid organizations are struggling to reach survivors in remote locations.

UNICEF and WHO Step In

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has deployed teams to assess the situation and provide humanitarian aid. “UNICEF is deeply concerned about the devastating impact of today’s earthquake in Myanmar on children and families,” the agency posted on X. It also noted damage in Thailand.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has activated its emergency response. Margaret Harris from WHO described the destruction as “enormous” and said the agency is sending trauma supplies to hospitals treating the injured.

Calls for Immediate Humanitarian Access

A humanitarian organization director in Myanmar warned that rebuilding efforts could take years. Joe Freeman, a researcher from Amnesty International, urged Myanmar’s military rulers to allow unrestricted humanitarian aid. He stressed that the earthquake “could not come at a worse time” for the country.

As Myanmar continues to face aftershocks, the situation remains critical. Rescue teams are racing against time to help survivors, but many challenges remain. The full scale of the disaster is still unfolding.

Soil liquefaction worsened damage. India launched Operation Brahma, delivering aid to Myanmar as rescue operations continue.
</excerpt>

Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.4 magnitudes struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, killing over 1,000 people and injuring thousands. The epicenter was located in central Myanmar, about 50 kilometers east of Monywa. The tremors caused significant devastation, collapsing buildings, bridges, and roads, while CCTV and smartphone footage captured the horrifying aftermath.

Widespread Devastation in Myanmar

Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, suffered heavy destruction. A centuries-old Buddhist pagoda crumbled, and a monk died when a monastery collapsed. Many residents are now sleeping outdoors, fearing aftershocks. The Mandalay Airport sustained structural damage, hampering relief operations in a nation already struggling with an ongoing civil war.

A viral video from Myanmar has sparked discussions as it shows water gushing from the ground. Experts suspect soil liquefaction, a phenomenon where water-saturated soil loses its strength and behaves like a liquid during seismic activity. According to Britannica, “Buildings constructed on loose soil pitch and tilt easily when liquefaction occurs, since the soil no longer supports the structures’ foundations.”

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) in India confirmed that soil liquefaction significantly contributed to the devastation in Myanmar and Bangkok. The agency noted that the earthquake’s shaking frequency matched the natural vibrations of buildings, intensifying the destruction.

Impact in Bangkok

The earthquake’s tremors reached Bangkok, Thailand, where a 30-story building under construction collapsed, killing at least 10 people. Rescue teams are searching for nearly 100 missing workers trapped beneath the debris. Authorities have recorded over 2,000 reports of structural damage and are inspecting buildings for safety.

While Bangkok did not experience widespread destruction, several high-rise buildings swayed, rooftop swimming pools overflowed, and hospitals evacuated patients. Some emergency surgeries were performed outdoors due to evacuations.

Why Did the Earthquake Happen?

Myanmar is one of the most seismically active regions in the world, as it lies on the Sagaing Fault, a major fault line between the Indian and Sunda plates. This fault runs approximately 1,200 kilometers through Myanmar, placing the region at high risk of earthquakes.

India Launches Operation Brahma for Relief Efforts

India has launched “Operation Brahma” to assist Myanmar in the wake of the disaster. The first tranche of humanitarian aid, including tents, sleeping bags, blankets, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generators, and essential medicines, has already reached Yangon Airport.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar posted on X, “First tranche of humanitarian aid from India has reached the Yangon Airport in Myanmar.”

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar is monitoring the situation and confirmed that no Indian nationals have been reported injured or killed in the disaster. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Thailand is coordinating with local authorities to assist Indian citizens, though no casualties have been reported in Bangkok. Indian nationals in Thailand requiring emergency assistance can contact the helpline at +66 618819218.

Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing as authorities work to assess the full extent of the devastation and provide aid to affected communities.

</excerpt>

A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing massive destruction. At least 1,000 people have died, and more than 2,000 are injured. Officials expect the numbers to rise as rescue efforts continue. Meanwhile, in Thailand, a high-rise under construction collapsed in Bangkok, killing at least six people.

Myanmar Seeks Urgent International Help

Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing has requested international aid to assist in relief efforts. In a televised speech, he confirmed that Myanmar has accepted support from India and the AHA Center, a regional disaster response agency.

Earthquake Details and Strong Aftershocks

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar around midday on Friday. Its epicenter was near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. Just 11 minutes later, a powerful 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed, making the situation worse.

Myanmar frequently experiences earthquakes, but they usually strike remote areas. This time, the tremors severely impacted major cities, leading to widespread damage and loss of life.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that the death toll could exceed 1,000, making it one of Myanmar’s worst disasters in recent years.

Hospitals Overwhelmed, Urgent Blood Shortage

Myanmar’s military leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, warned that the number of deaths and injuries will likely increase. He has invited all nations to send aid and donations.

Meanwhile, Major General Zaw Min Tun reported that hospitals in Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Sagaing are struggling to handle the flood of patients. Medical teams need blood donations and emergency supplies. Doctors and nurses are working non-stop to treat the injured.

Building Collapse in Bangkok Kills Six

The earthquake’s impact extended to Thailand. In Bangkok, a 33-story building under construction collapsed near Chatuchak Market. Dust filled the air, and people ran for safety as the structure crumbled. Traffic came to a halt as rescue teams rushed in. Medics transported the injured on stretchers while emergency workers searched for survivors.

Countries Respond with Aid and Relief

The international community is stepping in to help:

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States will send assistance, stating, “We’re going to be helping.”

Myanmar’s government usually hesitates to accept foreign aid, but this time, Min Aung Hlaing assured that the country is open to receiving help.

India will send over 15 tonnes of relief materials, including tents, sleeping bags, food, water purifiers, hygiene kits, and medicines. The Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft will deliver the aid from Air Force Station Hindon.

China Feels the Tremors

The earthquake also shook China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The city of Ruili suffered structural damage. In Mangshi, tremors were so strong that people struggled to stand.

Aftershocks Keep Shaking the Region

Strong aftershocks continue to rattle Myanmar. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed that a 4.2-magnitude tremor struck at 11:56 PM local time on Friday. It occurred 10 km underground, increasing the risk of more aftershocks.

Mandalay Faces Heavy Destruction

Mandalay, home to 1.5 million people, has suffered extensive damage. Rescue teams are working around the clock to free monks trapped under Phaya Taung Monastery’s rubble. Many families are searching for missing loved ones.

Humanitarian Groups Raise Concerns

Amnesty International warned that the earthquake hit at a critical time for Myanmar. The country already has many displaced people and ongoing humanitarian crises. Reduced U.S. aid under the Trump administration has made relief efforts even more difficult.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis, who is recovering from double pneumonia, offered his prayers for the victims. The Vatican stated, “The pope has been informed of the disaster in Myanmar and is praying for the dramatic situation and for the many victims, also in Thailand.”

Thailand on High Alert for More Aftershocks

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered emergency agencies to stay prepared. She warned that aftershocks could cause further damage. However, she has not confirmed any additional casualties.

Myanmar is facing one of its worst natural disasters in years. With thousands injured and hospitals overwhelmed, the need for international assistance is urgent. Rescue teams are still searching through rubble, hoping to save more lives. As aftershocks continue, the coming days will be crucial for relief and recovery efforts.

Engineering, materials, and seismic-resistant designs determined why some buildings collapsed while others remained standing, highlighting the importance of modern earthquake-resistant construction.
</excerpt>

A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Thailand and neighboring Myanmar on Friday, March 28, causing widespread destruction. Reports indicate that over 20 people have lost their lives, and many remain trapped under debris. While some buildings, including a high-rise under construction in Bangkok, crumbled under the force, others swayed but remained intact. The difference lies in the science of earthquake-resistant engineering and construction materials.

How Earthquakes Impact Buildings

According to a report by Exploratorium, earthquakes generate seismic waves that travel through the ground, causing structures to shake. However, how a building reacts to these tremors depends on several factors, including its height, design, and materials used in construction. Surprisingly, taller buildings often withstand quakes better than shorter ones due to their flexible designs, which allow them to absorb seismic energy. In contrast, shorter and stiffer structures experience greater force and are more likely to sustain damage.

WATCH THE VIRAL VIDEO:

The Bangkok earthquake that hit just now was the first big one in many years, catching everyone by surprise. Its epicenter in Myanmar, 7.7 magnitude. Bangkok’s high-rises are not usually built for quakes.

Tall buildings are like big, wobbly Jenga towers; they lean and sway… pic.twitter.com/Gze2C3Obbl

— LordBenalez (@LordBenalez) March 28, 2025

A social media user highlighted this concept with a viral post, comparing skyscrapers to “big, wobbly Jenga towers” that sway slowly, while smaller buildings behave like “solid Lego houses” that rattle quickly. This phenomenon explains why some structures collapsed while others remained standing despite intense ground shaking.

Engineering and Materials: The Key to Earthquake Resistance

The materials and structural design play a significant role in determining a building’s ability to survive an earthquake. Flexible materials such as steel and wood absorb seismic shocks better than rigid materials like unreinforced concrete or masonry. Engineers use reinforced joints and trusses to distribute seismic forces more evenly throughout a building, minimizing damage.

In earthquake-prone regions, advanced technology such as base isolators is commonly used to reduce structural damage. These isolators act as shock absorbers at a building’s foundation, limiting the amount of force transferred from the ground to the structure.

Modern Engineering Saves Lives

While Bangkok’s high-rises swayed dramatically, most remained intact, showcasing the effectiveness of earthquake-resistant design. This event underscores the critical role modern engineering plays in mitigating earthquake damage and protecting lives. As cities continue to expand, investing in seismic-resistant construction will be crucial in reducing casualties and destruction from future earthquakes.

Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand

The quake hit central Myanmar at 12:50 PM (local time) on Friday, with the epicenter 16 km northwest of the city of Sagaing at a depth of 10 km, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. A powerful aftershock of 6.8 magnitude shook the area further, aggravating the destruction.

Several buildings have fallen, roads were destroyed, and rescue teams have been sent to determine the full scale of casualties and damage. Although the number of victims is still unknown, preliminary reports confirm extensive destruction in both nations. Luckily, no tsunami alert has been issued.

Tremors Felt in India

The effects of the earthquake were not confined to Myanmar and Thailand, as tremors were experienced in various Indian cities, such as Kolkata and Imphal. People reported shaking buildings and ran out of their homes in panic. The Indian authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation and have alerted disaster response teams.

Viral Footage Captures Skyscraper Collapse

An appalling video on social media captures an unfinished skyscraper in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district collapsing under the quake’s effect. Media reports say that 43 people are trapped inside and rescue is under way quickly.

With its centuries-old tradition of providing disaster relief to the surrounding nations, India is ready to send aid and emergency response teams as and when required. </excerpt>

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, sending tremors across the region and causing significant damage. The earthquake was felt in several neighboring countries, including Thailand, where Bangkok experienced strong shocks.

Impact of the Earthquake on Bangkok

The earthquake caused structural damage to a greater impact in Bangkok, with building’s tumbling and cracks arising in several high-rise structures. An under construction skyscraper compiling around 30 floors collapsed, trapping dozens of workers inside. Emergency teams had been deployed to rescue those affected, as authorities fear the possibility of more structural failures.

Beyond the building collapse, multiple structures in Bangkok have sustained varying degrees of damage. Evacuations were carried out in high-risk areas, and many residents rushed out of their homes in fear. The tremors also disrupted public transport, causing heavy traffic congestion and communication network issues.

Thailand Government’s Response

In response to the crisis, the Prime Minister of Thailand declared a state of emergency in Bangkok. The decision grants authorities the power to implement immediate safety measures, mobilize additional resources, and restrict movement in severely affected areas. Emergency shelters have been set up for displaced residents, and medical teams are on standby to assist the injured.

The government has also suspended trading on the stock exchange to prevent financial instability amid the ongoing crisis. Efforts are being made to assess the full extent of the damage and allocate necessary resources for relief operations.

Regional Effects of the Earthquake

The earthquake’s epicenter was in Myanmar, where it caused severe damage to infrastructure, including bridges, roads, and historical sites. Tremors were felt across Southeast Asia, affecting cities in Thailand, India, and southwestern China.

In Myanmar, the impact was particularly devastating, with buildings collapsing and emergency responders working around the clock to rescue trapped individuals. Authorities have warned of possible aftershocks and urged residents to remain vigilant.

Ongoing Efforts

Rescue and relief operations are underway in both Thailand and Myanmar. Emergency teams are working tirelessly to locate survivors, clear debris, and restore essential services. The public is advised to stay alert for aftershocks and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

The earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Governments and disaster response teams continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring swift action to minimize further risks and provide aid to those affected.

Rescue operations continue as aftershocks persist.
</excerpt>

A cataclysmic 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit off Myanmar’s Sagaing city on Friday, bringing widespread damage and panic across several regions of the world, including Thailand and China. Extensive damage has been reported on buildings, bridges, and metro services, while a 1000-bed hospital in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, is now described as a “mass casualty area” by AFP.

Hospital Becomes Epicenter of Earthquake

One of Naypyidaw’s biggest hospitals was hit hard by the quake, with harrowing scenes of wounded patients being treated on the streets for emergency care. Doctors rushed to give IV drips as families comforted their relatives outside the damaged building. Authorities have not yet announced the number of fatalities.

Bangkok Skyscraper Collapse Traps 43

In Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city, an incomplete 30-story building intended for government offices collapsed. At least 43 people are feared trapped in the debris.

“When I arrived to inspect the site, I heard people calling for help, saying help me,'” Deputy Police Chief of Bang Sue district Worapat Sukthai said. “We estimate that hundreds of people are injured but we are still determining the number of casualties.”

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra imposed a state of emergency and suspended metro services in Bangkok following frightening footage of a train jerking violently at a station.

China, India, and Bangladesh Also Experience Earthquake Tremors

The effect of the earthquake did not just reach Myanmar and Thailand, with China’s Yunnan province feeling intense tremors. The China Earthquake Networks Center registered the quake at a 7.9 magnitude.

In India, there were tremors in Kolkata and Manipur, while in Bangladesh, Dhaka and Chattogram experienced shaking. No serious damages or fatalities have been reported in these regions, however.

Widespread Panic and Aftershocks

Social media videos recorded the utter fear as buildings shook and citizens scurried onto the streets in panic. In Chiang Mai, Thailand, one resident, Duangjai, recalled the moment:

“I heard it… I was sleeping in the house, and then I ran as far as I could in my pyjamas out of the building.”

Aftershocks persisted to shake Myanmar and the surrounding areas, with a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hitting shortly after the first quake.

Rescue Operations in Progress

Rescue workers are working around the clock to find survivors buried under the rubble in both Thailand and Myanmar. The extent of the damage is not yet known, but officials anticipate casualty figures to increase as more information comes in.

The catastrophic quake has shaken Myanmar, Thailand, and other countries in the region, leaving emergency personnel fighting against time to rescue people.

</excerpt>

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, causing significant structural damage and widespread panic across the region. The quake’s impact was felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, where buildings swayed, and residents evacuated in fear.

Epicenter and Magnitude

The earthquake’s epicenter was located near Sagaing, approximately 250 kilometers from Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw. The main quake, registering a magnitude of 7.7, was followed closely by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock.

Impact in Myanmar of the Earthquake

In Myanmar, the earthquake caused the collapse of the iconic Ava Bridge in Mandalay, a historic structure spanning the Irrawaddy River. Numerous buildings in Mandalay also suffered significant damage, with reports of structures crumbling under the seismic stress.

Regional Effects of the Earthquake

The tremors extended beyond Myanmar’s borders, affecting several neighboring countries:

Thailand: In Bangkok, high-rise buildings swayed, prompting evacuations as alarms sounded. Residents reported water sloshing out of rooftop pools, and many fled to the streets in panic. The government convened an urgent meeting to address the situation.

Vietnam: Cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City experienced noticeable tremors, causing light fixtures to sway and unsettling residents.

India and China: Reports indicate that the earthquake’s effects reached parts of eastern India and southern China, though no significant damage has been reported in these areas.

Casualties and Damage Assessment

As of now, there are no confirmed reports of casualties. Authorities in Myanmar and affected regions are conducting assessments to determine the full extent of the damage. Given the magnitude of the earthquake and the affected areas’ infrastructure, concerns remain about potential injuries and fatalities.

Response and Relief Efforts

Emergency response teams have been mobilized in Myanmar to assist those affected and to assess structural damages. Neighboring countries are on high alert for possible aftershocks and are coordinating with Myanmar to provide aid if necessary. International organizations are also monitoring the situation closely, ready to offer assistance in relief and recovery operations.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar has had far-reaching effects across Southeast Asia, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to seismic events. As assessments continue, the priority remains on ensuring the safety of residents, providing aid to those affected, and evaluating the structural integrity of buildings and infrastructure in the impacted areas.
