In accordance with a report by TMZ, Bieber was on the verge of a “financial collapse” in 2022. Sources familiar with the singer say the situation became so bad that he was left with no choice but to sell his music rights. Legendary Singer P Jayachandran Passes Away At 80

Renowned playback singer P Jayachandran, known as Bhava Gayakan for his deeply emotive renditions, passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 80. He died at a private hospital in Thrissur, Kerala, after being admitted following a collapse at his residence. Hospital sources reported that the singer, who had been unwell for some time, breathed his last at 7:55 PM.

He has to his credit over 16,000 songs in many languages such as Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. Known for his unparalleled contributions to the Indian music, he has many awards under his belt. Those include National Film Award and J C Daniel Award conferred by Kerala State Government. Five times he received the Kerala State Film Awards and Tamil Nadu State Film Awards twice. His rendition of the song “Shiva Shankara Sharana Sarva Vibho” in Sree Narayana Guru also won him a National Award.

March 3, 1944, is Jayachandran’s birthday, as he was born in Ernakulam and was the offspring of a household rich in culture. He was a third son from the couple formed by Ravi Varma Kochaniyan Thampuran of the Tripunithura Kovilakam, and Subhadra Kunjamma of the Chendamangalam Paliam House. His musical journey began during his school days, where he excelled in both mridangam and light classical music. At the 1958 state school kalotsavam, he won first place in the mridangam competition and met K J Yesudas, marking the beginning of a lifelong connection.

Jayachandran’s first playback singing experience was in 1965, with the song “Oru Mullappoo Malayumayi” for the film Kunjali Marakkar, written by P Bhaskaran. His first released song, however, was “Manjalayil Mungithorthi” from Kalithozhan. He has sung for music maestros like G Devarajan, M S Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, A R Rahman, and Vidyasagar. His association with Ilaiyaraaja saw many Tamil super hits, like “Rasathi Unna Kanatha Nenju” from Vaidehi Kathirundal.

Jayachandran’s death has left a gaping hole in the music world. Tributes came pouring from across the country, with Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar describing his voice as one that charmed audiences for six decades and would continue to comfort hearts for years to come. In an interview with The Week, the acclaimed Maestro of Madras stated, “AI helps in the mastering process, but creating a tune still requires a human heart and philosophical mind. I believe the future will belong to real musicians going on stage with a guitar and a song. I feel that, with digitisation, we will value the flaws even more—‘Oh, it’s real, see? He is out of tune.’”

Rahman compared AI to Frankenstein, describing it as “trained on collected, stolen knowledge.” He noted, “[AI] is good as a starting tool. I use AI for posters. Sometimes the result surprises you, and sometimes it is very bad, in which case I use a combination of Photoshop and AI.”

In the same interview, Rahman also expressed a desire to work again with director Mani Ratnam. He shared, “I think the more trust you have in someone, the more you torture yourself. This seemingly ordinary building is the new home of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, dedicated to preserving Afghan music and countering efforts to eradicate it. Ahmad Sarmast, the institute’s director, emphasizes the resilience of Afghan music despite the Taliban’s attempts to silence it.

Founded in 2010 under the US-backed government in Kabul, the institute symbolized Afghanistan’s progress. It featured ensembles of young male and female musicians from diverse backgrounds, including Zohra, the country’s first all-female orchestra. They toured globally, blending Afghan and Western music and challenging the Taliban’s enforced silence.

However, the institute’s future dimmed when the Taliban regained power in August 2021. Ramiz Safa, a 20-year-old musician, recalls the panic and fear as the Taliban took over, forcing him to hide his rubab and change his appearance. Sarmast, on holiday in Australia, worked tirelessly to protect the institute’s members. Portugal responded, eventually allowing 273 people, including musicians and staff, to relocate to Europe.

Seedhe Maut is a Delhi based rap duo consisting of Abhijay Negi (Encore) and Siddhant Sharma (Calm).

They met at Spit Dope Inc. which is an underground rap battle contest based in Delhi. The two started off with nothing, writing songs about hustling and aiming to be the best in business. ’Seedhe Maut Anthem’ was the first song released by them in May 2017, followed by their debut mixtape, ‘2 ka Pahada’.

They were then signed to Azadi Records, an independent music label.

In recent years, Rap music has become prevalent in India. It no longer is just a part of India’s underground Hip-Hop scene. It has now become a part of mainstream television programming with shows like MTV Hustle, which have brought rap to the forefront in India.

MTV Hustle Season 1: ‘INDIA KA RAP REVOLUTION’ premiered on 10th August 2019. it tried to capitalize on India’s growing Hip-Hop listenership. The show was successful in doing so as it had mainstream rappers and artists like Raftaar, Rajakumari, and Nucleya. Also, it rode the success wave of ‘Gully Boy’ which had become an instant hit on its release. This brought attention towards rap and the Indian audiences made Hustle 1 a roaring success.

MTV Hustle Season 2: ‘HUSTLE KAR, HAASIL KAR’ saw a change in the judges with Badshah, another big name in the industry, becoming its judge, replacing Raftaar, Nucleya, and Rajakumari.

This season featured the previous season’s contestants as judges-cum-mentors It broke all the expectations of viewers and show creators alike. The season’s biggest track crossed 250 million views digitally. Several other tracks too crossed the 100 million views mark.

After the massive success of season 2, fans had huge expectations for the third season but were met with disappointment as it lacked the same flare. ‘Jimmy Jimmy’ is one of my favorite songs from Bappi uncle. We were happy to be able to pay a tribute to him and his work through this song. We enjoyed filming the video. I wish Bappi sir would been here to hear our song. That would have been amazing. Everything about Jimmy Jimmy, right from the music to the composition, is so unique.

What were the challenges associated with remaking the song?

Jimmy Jimmy has been such an iconic hit. There are so many remixes and remakes of it. It is famous in Russia, China, and Korea. I really wanted to give a little tribute through this song.

How was the experience of working with Bappa Lahiri?

Bappa is the spitting image of his father We were nervous while recording the song. Everyone knows its beats as it is such a cult track. We did not want to butcher it. So, we took care to avoid any extra elements. We merely added a bit of modern touch to it and that was it. We also recreated the 80s aesthetics for the video. Bappa, coming to the question, was fantastic to work with.

What is your fondest memory of Bappi Lahiri?

I met him at his birthday celebration and it was a wonderful feeling. We were able to chat in that wonderful environment and hear his stories. I cherish the moment I met him and am inspired by him.

Who are your biggest critics?

That would be me, my mum, and my sister. I appreciate constructive criticism. As an artist, sometimes you get into a loop and don’t get the opportunity to look at it from a different perspective. That’s when you need good people around you who can be honest with you and your craft. These people are ones who are supportive of you and criticise you as they see the potential in you. I am always sharing my stuff with my mom and sister. I look forward to their opinions.

What are your upcoming projects?

I just wrapped up a TV show in Los Angeles. I have also completed a short film. However, right now, I am celebrating the success of Jimmy Jimmy. Then, there are also a few singles in the works

The future of Carnatic music is secure: Jayanthi Kumaresh

Jayanthi Kumaresh is an Internationally renowned Saraswati Veena artist. Jayanthi comes from a direct unbroken lineage of disciples of Saint Thyagaraja who have been practising Carnatic music for six generations.

In a candid conversation she gives her insights about her journey with the Veena. Excerpts:
Q. Even though your family has been into music for generations, what influenced you to take up music? Is it by choice or by accident?
A. I come from a family where music has been the life breath for over six generations now. But most of them were violinists. Only one aunt on my mother’s side played the Veena. She was also pretty much self-taught and developed into a fine vainika. It was my mother who started me off on Veena from the age of three.

When I was very young, I felt that all my cousins were playing on that compact instrument called the ‘Violin’ whereas I was given this humongous Veena for which I had to traverse from one end to other. Yet I felt that there was a connection between me and Veena. Like they say, I did not choose my instrument. I think my instrument chose me. Then I learnt in a Gurukul system with my maternal aunt Smt. Padmavati Ananthagopalan, Lalgudi Jayaraman’s first sister, and stayed with her for over twenty years to pursue and master the art of Veena playing.

Q. Have you adopted any particular trait /style in your rendition and the influence of which reflects in your music?
A. The playing style of every musician is a process of growth and the journey of a musician is always continuous and ever evolving, ever changing. As a child, my musical pedagogy was influenced by my gurus and my uncle and Violin Maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman Ji. I was also influenced by my other guru Dr. S. Balachander, the Veena virtuoso, who helped enhance my perception of Ragas and technique. The different collaborations in musical journey helped expand the horizons of my musical idiom and altered my presentation as the journey progressed. I was influenced by several giants of the Hindustani music like the Tabla wizard Ustad Zakir Hussain ji who motivated me to find my own style. He encouraged me to find my own identity and style of music other than that of my gurus because each person is a product of the experiences that they have in their life. My husband Violin Maestro Vidwan Kumaresh is a great pillar of strength in my life.

Q. Can u share some memorable moments in your musical journey?
A. There have been many memorable moments in my musical journey. The one that comes to my mind right now is the first concert I performed with Ustad Zakir Hussain ji more than 15 years ago. Zakir ji was playing with a veena player after a long hiatus. He played with my guru S. Balachander when he was himself very young. I was quite excited yet nervous and was wondering how Zakir ji would react to my music. The ease and comfort of the melody with the rhythm in harmony was unbelievable. That was a life changing moment for me. Since then, we have performed together at many prestigious venues. Recently we had a 19-city tour of the United States and the Esplanade at Singapore in a featured production called TRIVENI along with Hindustani Violinist Kala Ramnath ji.

Q. How do you perceive your music journey thus far? How do you wish to contribute to the society for the cause of music?
A. My journey of music spanning almost 40 years has been to promote propagate and popularise the Saraswathi Veena, the National instrument of India across the globe. In my roles as a Pioneer, Performer, Educator and researcher, I have aimed at having the single-minded focus to be an ambassador of the Saraswathi Veena. Carnatic Music is over 2000 years old and I believe that it is my responsibility to preserve and pass it on to the younger generations. This rich cultural heritage needs to spread to different strata of this society so that they can benefit from the joy of our music. My web series Cup O Carnatic aims at bringing this highly sophisticated system of music to the society especially children and adults, in friendly and easy to understand segments. There are so far 8 seasons on social media garnering a cumulative viewership of over 3 million.

Q. What do you hope audiences take away from your music, and how do you see the role of Carnatic music in the world today?
A. In today’s world, the lines between genres of music have become blurry. For any instrumentalist, the language of music is universal as it becomes a completely sonic experience and instrumentalists do not have to deal with the language, region or religion. But speaking of Carnatic music, the next crop of musicians is ready to take on the baton. The future of Carnatic music is secure with a great number of young musicians showing immense talent. Art is a remembered experience and each concert must leave an indelible impression on the listener. There must be something for the mind and something for the soul in every presentation. Each musician aims at creating that solace in the listener and a thirst for more such musical moments.

Women-run radio station shut down by Taliban

According to a report from Al Jazeera on Monday, a women-run radio station in northeast Afghanistan has been shut down in yet another oppressive step because it broadcast music during the fasting month of Ramzan.

Since it began broadcasting ten years ago, Sadai Banowan has been the only woman-run radio station in Afghanistan. Sadai Banowan translates to “women’s voice” in Dari. In the radio station, there were six female personnel out of a total of eight. Ramadan music was played on the radio station multiple times, according to Moezuddin Ahmadi, the provincial director for communications and culture, in violation of Islamic Emirate laws and regulations. The station was closed as a result.

Ahmadi said, “If this radio station accepts the policy of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and guarantees that it will not repeat such a thing again, we will allow it to operate again,”.

Najia Sorosh, the station’s manager, refuted the Taliban’s allegations that the radio station had broken laws and regulations by denying that there had been any infringement and by claiming that the closure was an elaborate plot.
The Taliban “told us that you have broadcast music. We have not broadcast any kind of music,” she said according to Al Jazeera.

Vedanta Udaipur music festival concludes its 6th edition on a high note

Vedanta Udaipur World Music Festival, wrapped up its sixth edition, which was held from the 16th of December to the 18th of December, 2022. The festival was the brainchild of Seher and was presented by Rajasthan Tourism. It bore testimony to the performances of over 120 renowned musicians worldwide. This year’s musical celebration focused on the revival of forgotten musical instruments like the Sarangi by giving the local musicians an international platform to showcase their talent.

The festival’s first day witnessed Sarangi performance by local artists, along with several celebrated musicians and singers like Jasleen Aulakh, Parvaaz, Abakorao with their popular Latin tunes, and Papon.

The second day hosted artists like violinist Nandini Shankar, Bruno Loi, and Jonathan Della Marianna, who showcased the Launeddas instrument from Italy, Kamakshi Khanna, Katia Guerreiro, the eminent Fado singer from Portugal, SENZA from Portugal, Blessing Bled Chimanga & Dreams from Zimbabwe, the very popular The Raghu Dixit Project and Habla de mi en presente, a high energy band from Spain.

The day also held the performance of Sarangi players and the announcement of the results of the Vedanta Talent Hunt. Performances by Sri jani Ghose from Australia, Anoushka Maskey, actor-singer-songwriter Sanjeeta Bhattacharya and Aabha Hanjura graced the final day of the music festival. Naveen and Vedang, India’s premier Solo Percussive Acoustic Guitarist Dhruv Visvanath, the Electric Percussions Orchestra from France, Al[1]baluna from Portugal, Amrit Ramnath and Farhan Akhtar also performed on the last day.

Speaking of the event, Sanjeev Bhargava, Founder Director of Seher, said, “Our team at Seher has worked relentlessly for several weeks to organize this festival, and the warm reception we received was worth the effort. We are thankful to each artist and the people of Udaipur for helping us make our dream a reality. We have already started making plans for the next edition, and hopefully, we will be back soon.”

“The Vedanta Udaipur Music Festival this year has surpassed our expectations. The footfall was very encouraging, and every artist performed their best. Farhan Akhtar, who performed on the last day of the festival said, “It was great performing at the Vedanta Udaipur Music Festival. I felt like the audience could connect with every artist and their unique style. The local musicians were inspiring, and their performance motivates us of the need for more such efforts and platforms.”

The festival hosted the Vedanta Talent Hunt, which aimed at giving local artists from Udaipur and neighbouring districts a platform to showcase their talent. It helped revive the lost art and gave hope to its connoisseurs.

On the last day of the event, the winning artists performed on the afternoon stage and the certification ceremony took place in the evening where Mr Arun Mishra & Mr Sanjeev Bhargava presented the awards
