</excerpt>

The BJP government has ramped up flood control efforts with advanced monitoring ahead of monsoon in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The newly established Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Delhi has gone into active mode, working effectively to prepare the capital for the upcoming monsoon season. Every year, heavy rains disrupt daily life in the national capital, leading to widespread waterlogging that hampers the city’s functioning and causes severe inconvenience to its residents.

Tragically, last year’s monsoon even claimed several lives due to flooding-related incidents. Determined to avoid a repeat of such scenarios, the new administration has acted swiftly and decisively to get Delhi monsoon-ready. As part of these proactive measures, Delhi’s Minister of Irrigation and Flood Control, Parvesh Sahib Singh, conducted an inspection of the modern control room of the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department located in Shastri Nagar. This visit was part of a broader high-level review of the city’s flood preparedness and drainage system readiness ahead of the monsoon.

While addressing the media during his visit, the Minister emphasised that the government has adopted a war-footing approach to flood control efforts. “This is our I&FC Control Room, which continuously monitors all 77 major drains across Delhi and keeps track of the water level of the Yamuna River around the clock. It analyses rainfall drainage flow, the volume of water released upstream, and the downstream consequences,” he stated. Singh further added that the control room will remain fully functional 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the entire monsoon period. It will serve as the central hub for real-time coordination and emergency decision-making.

Starting June 15, when monsoon activity is expected to intensify, the control room will also host officials from the police, SDM offices, and other crucial departments to ensure prompt and collaborative responses during flood-related emergencies. During the review session, senior departmental officials briefed the Minister that nearly 90% of the cleaning work for the city’s 76 major drains has already been completed. The remaining portion is undergoing final clean-up operations. Advanced machinery, GPS tracking tools, and on-site inspection teams are being used to ensure that no clogs occur, thus significantly reducing the threat of water accumulation and flooding in the city.

The Minister directed that daily, real-time progress reports on the drain-cleaning operations be updated and maintained in the control room without fail. He also carefully examined the surveillance setup, warning systems, and multi-agency coordination protocols at the facility to ensure the systems are fully prepared to handle emergencies. Reinforcing the government’s commitment, the Minister remarked, “Our objective is not just to manage heavy rainfall but to rebuild the trust of the people of Delhi that this year, the situation will be different. We are not limiting our efforts to plans on paper— work is actively happening on the ground. Citizens will witness the change.

This is not merely a promise, but a firm commitment.” The I&FC Department has also operationalised live monitoring systems and alert mechanisms to guarantee a quick and efficient response in case of emergency situations, with a particular focus on the prompt evacuation of low-lying and floodprone areas, if necessary. Given the extensive waterlogging and urban flooding experienced in recent monsoons, this comprehensive, all-hands-on-deck strategy represents a significant departure from past practices. It reflects the government’s shift towards a more technologically equipped, datadriven model of governance in managing Delhi’s drainage and flood-control infrastructure.

</excerpt>

Rajasthan has set a new record for monsoon rainfall this year, surpassing the previous record of 664mm from June 1 to September 15, 1975. As of Saturday, the state has received an average rainfall of 668.5mm.

Radhey Shyam Sharma, Director of the Jaipur Met Office, explained, “Rajasthan this year has received the highest rainfall in the past 49 years, with average rainfall in the state being 668.5mm since June 1 to Saturday (Sept 14), which is higher than the 665.4mm received from June 1 to Sept 15, 1975.” Sharma noted that from 1975 to 2023, the average rainfall in the state was around 450mm. He also highlighted that the all-time record was set in 1917, with an average rainfall of 811mm.

Sharma pointed out that this year’s average rainfall is 61% higher than that during the same period in 2023, which had 414.5mm of rainfall for the whole monsoon season.

Several districts have experienced extraordinary rainfall this year. Bundi, Baran, Dausa, Dholpur, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Pratapgarh, and Tonk have received over 1,000mm of rainfall. Specific figures include Dausa with 1,386.6mm, Sawai Madhopur with 1,278.4mm, and Karauli with 1,228.5mm.

Jaipur has also seen a significant increase in rainfall, recording 981.5mm compared to 500mm for the entire monsoon season in 2023. Most of the state’s dams are nearly full, prompting the opening of gates at Bisalpur, Mahi Bajaj Sagar, Jawahar Sagar, and Morel dams to release excess water.

The Met Office anticipates that with a minor spell of monsoon still remaining, the state could reach an average rainfall of 700mm for the season.

</excerpt>

The monsoon season can be a nightmare for our hair, with humidity and rain causing frizz, damage, and hair fall. But fear not! With the right products, you can keep your locks looking healthy and beautiful even in the midst of the monsoon chaos. I tried some hair care products that transformed hair and here’s how you can amp up your monsoon hair care routine too!

Repair with a Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo
As the monsoon season approached, I knew I needed a shampoo that could detox and repair my hair. That’s when I discovered the K18 Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo. This miracle worker removed product buildup and impurities from my hair and scalp in just one wash, leaving my tresses soft and cleansed. Its unique K18 peptide complex fortified my damaged hair fiber, and the salicylic acid and activated charcoal work together to remove excess oil, product buildup, and water mineral deposits from the hair and scalp.

Fix My Curls Moisture Melt Deep Conditioning Hair Mask
Dry, damaged hair is a common problem during monsoons but the Fix My Curls Moisture Melt Deep Conditioning Hair Mask came to the rescue. With 8 magical oils and shea butter, it replenished and revived my hair, leaving them soft and manageable. It is perfect for dry, damaged, and chemically treated hair and can be used once a week to replenish and revive your hair, leaving it soft, moisturized, and full of life. The vegan-friendly product is also free of harsh chemicals, making it perfect for those with sensitive scalps.

Grow Hair with Plum Rosemary & 3% Redensyl Serum
Monsoons mean hair fall and being a long hair girlie, I love my hair way too much! To reduce my hair fall and boost hair texture and growth, I turned towards Plum’s Rosemary & 3% Redensyl Hair Growth Serum. This serum is vegan, natural, and free of toxins-which I absolutely love! With 3% Redensyl, 1% Rosemary, 4% Anagain, and 3% Baicapil, this serum worked wonders for my thinning tresses and helps boost new growth and blood circulation. I applied this serum twice a day and can’t wait to make it a part of my long-term hair routine!

Revive Hair with an Océglow Anti-Hair-Fall Mask
With constant rain and humidity, hair fall became a major concern for me during the monsoon. I tried out the Océglow Anti-Hair-Fall Mask, and trust me, it restored my hair’s density and quality. Magic ingredients of the mask are Redensyl, Capilia Longa, Baicapil, and Anagain which rebuild each fiber and leave my hair feeling soft and moisturized. This mask penetrated to rebuild each fiber, sinking in seamlessly to restore from the inside out, giving me a salon-like wash.

Hydrate, Seal, and Finish with Hair Mists
To end my hair care routine, I opted for the Hair Mist by Fix My Curls, which added the perfect finishing touch to dull manes. From warm vanilla to floral bouquet and crystal aqua, these mists are perfect for any hair type and concern. This is perfect for adding a fragrant, glossy, hydrating touch to your hair care routine and can be used on both dry and damp hair, providing long-lasting hydration and fragrance. What I loved is that they were perfect for refreshing my hair throughout the day, especially during the monsoon when humidity can be high.

</excerpt>

Travelling during the monsoon season can be a delightful experience, filled with lush landscapes and refreshing rain showers. However, it also presents unique challenges, especially when it comes to keeping your belongings dry and secure. Here are some must have essential travel accessories that can help you ease and style during the Monsoon.

Waterproof Backpack & Handbag
A waterproof backpack or handbag is an absolute must for monsoon travel. These accessories offer peace of mind by protecting your valuables from unexpected downpours. Look for options made from durable, water-resistant materials with sealed seams and waterproof zippers. Features like padded straps and multiple compartments add to the comfort and functionality of a backpack, while a stylish handbag can keep your essentials safe and dry while complementing your outfit.

Shoe Pouches
Shoes can be a major hassle during the monsoon, often getting soaked and muddy. Shoe pouches are a practical solution to this problem. These pouches are designed to keep your footwear separate from your clothes and other items in your luggage, preventing dirt and moisture from spreading. Opt for waterproof shoe pouches that are easy to clean and come with a sturdy zipper to ensure your shoes stay protected.

Aluminium Cabin Luggage
For frequent travellers, aluminium cabin luggage is an excellent investment. These hard-shell suitcases are designed to withstand rough handling and extreme weather conditions, including heavy rain. Aluminium luggage offers superior protection for your belongings, keeping them safe from moisture and impact. Additionally, the sleek, modern design adds a touch of sophistication to your travel ensemble.

Dry Bags
Dry bags are essential for safeguarding your electronics, documents, and other sensitive items. These bags are made from waterproof materials and feature roll-top closures that create a watertight seal. They come in various sizes, making them versatile for different packing needs. Whether you’re kayaking, hiking, or simply walking in the rain, dry bags ensure that your valuables stay dry and secure.

Travel Toiletry Bags
Keeping your toiletries dry and organised during the monsoon can be challenging. Travel toiletry bags made from waterproof materials are designed to address this issue. These bags often feature multiple compartments and a hanging hook for easy access and storage. Waterproof toiletry bags ensure that your personal care items remain dry and hygienic, no matter the weather.

Waterproof Document Holders
Travelling with important documents like passports, tickets, and identification is always a necessity, and keeping them dry is crucial. Waterproof document holders are designed to provide protection from water while also organising your documents efficiently. These holders are typically made from durable materials and often come with multiple compartments for easy access and storage.

Foldable Water-Resistant Travel Bags
Foldable water-resistant travel bags are incredibly handy for unexpected needs. They can be used as an extra bag for souvenirs or as a beach bag. When not in use, they fold up compactly, taking up minimal space in your luggage.

Waterproof Luggage Covers
Luggage covers can be a lifesaver for your checked baggage. Waterproof luggage covers provide an extra layer of protection from the elements, keeping your suitcase dry even if it’s left out in the rain. These covers are easy to slip on and off, and they add a layer of security to your luggage.

Waterproof Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are a great way to organise your belongings, and waterproof versions add the benefit of keeping your items dry. These cubes can separate your wet and dry items, making it easier to manage your packing and access what you need quickly.

Conclusion
Monsoon travel can be a delightful and memorable experience if you’re well-prepared. Investing in high-quality waterproof accessories ensures that your belongings stay dry and protected, allowing you to enjoy your adventures without worry. Happy Monsoons!

</excerpt>

As the monsoon season continues with its relentless rain and humidity, maintaining a skincare routine becomes increasingly challenging. Whether you enjoy the rains or find them bothersome, the increased humidity can wreak havoc on your skin. From stickiness to clogged pores, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you manage your skincare during these damp days.

Essential Monsoon Skincare Tips

One crucial tip from Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj, Senior Dermatologist and Consultant at Saket’s Max Hospital, is to adjust your face wash according to your skin type using Fuller’s Earth or multani mitti. For oily skin, she recommends using Fuller’s Earth directly. For combination skin, mix it with rose water. For dry skin, combine Fuller’s Earth with sandalwood powder and either aloe vera gel, yogurt, or par-boiled milk. Apply this mixture as a face wash, let it sit for 2 minutes, and then rinse with water without scrubbing.

Dr. Kiran Sethi, MD, founder of Isya Aesthetics, emphasizes the importance of reducing layers in your skincare routine rather than adding more products. For oily skin, minimize the number of layers applied. Even those with dry skin, who may still feel dehydrated, can benefit from a watery hyaluronic acid serum.

Skincare for Different Ages

Regardless of age, moisturizing remains vital during the monsoon. Dr. Sethi highlights that mature skin, which tends to be more sensitive, requires substantial moisturization. Pure oils like grapeseed, almond, or coconut oil can be beneficial if you are not acne-prone. For younger, sensitive skin, maintaining balanced pH levels is essential. Even if prone to breakouts, continue to use a gel-based moisturizer.

Beard Care During Monsoons

Men’s grooming, particularly beard care, requires special attention during the rainy season. Dr. Sethi advises shaving in the direction of hair growth and using minimal shaving products to avoid clogging pores. Dr. Bhardwaj suggests using a face wash with salicylic acid, niacinamide, or azelaic acid to manage beard acne. An anti-dandruff shampoo once or twice a week can also help without being too harsh.

Makeup and Monsoons

For makeup enthusiasts, the high humidity can cause makeup to melt and lead to breakouts. Niacinamide is recommended for its protective properties against monsoon acne. Dr. Bhardwaj suggests applying niacinamide between sunscreen and makeup in the morning and following it with a gel-based moisturizer in the evening. Dr. Sethi recommends simplifying your makeup routine by using fewer layers. Opt for mattifying products and consider reducing the number of items like primer, CC cream, foundation, and concealer to avoid buildup.

By adjusting your skincare routine with these tips, you can better manage the challenges posed by the monsoon and keep your skin healthy and radiant.

</excerpt>

The monsoon season, with its refreshing rain and heightened humidity, offers a welcome break from the heat but also brings unique challenges for contact lens wearers. Increased moisture in the air, frequent downpours, and the temptation to splash around can all impact the comfort and safety of your lenses. Here’s how you can navigate these challenges and ensure a trouble-free experience with your contact lenses during the monsoon.

Maintain Strict Hygiene

Hygiene is crucial when it comes to contact lens care, and this becomes even more important during the monsoon season. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your lenses. This simple step helps prevent the transfer of dirt and bacteria that can lead to eye infections. Additionally, ensure your contact lens case is clean and dry before storing your lenses. Regularly replacing the case and keeping it free from moisture helps minimize the risk of bacterial contamination.

Avoid Water Exposure

Water can be particularly problematic for contact lens wearers. Rainwater and water from swimming pools can introduce harmful bacteria and potentially cause infections. To avoid this, try to keep your lenses dry and avoid wearing them while swimming or during heavy rain. If you do need to be outside in the rain, consider wearing glasses or protective eyewear to shield your lenses from getting wet.

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is key to maintaining eye health, especially during the monsoon. Humidity can sometimes cause dry eyes, making rewetting drops a valuable addition to your contact lens routine. Choose drops specifically designed for use with contact lenses to keep your eyes comfortable and moist. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water helps support natural moisture levels in your eyes.

Avoid Touching Your Eyes

If your eyes feel irritated or itchy due to the monsoon weather, resist the urge to rub them. Rubbing can introduce more dirt and bacteria, exacerbating the problem. Instead, use lubricating drops to soothe any discomfort. If symptoms persist or worsen, remove your lenses and consult an eye care professional.

Regular Lens Cleaning

Following proper cleaning protocols is essential to maintaining lens hygiene. Adhere to the recommended cleaning and disinfection routines for your contact lenses, using only the designated solutions. Avoid mixing different products, as this can compromise their effectiveness. Additionally, ensure you replace your lenses according to your eye care professional’s advice to prevent discomfort and reduce the risk of infection.

Monitor Eye Health

Be vigilant about monitoring your eye health during the monsoon. Look out for signs of irritation, redness, or unusual discomfort. If you notice any of these symptoms, remove your lenses and seek advice from an eye care professional immediately. Regular eye check-ups can also help address potential issues early and ensure your lenses remain suitable for your eyes.

Consider Switching to Glasses

During particularly heavy rains or if you’re experiencing significant discomfort, it might be wise to switch to glasses temporarily. Glasses eliminate the risk of water exposure and can provide a more comfortable alternative during adverse weather conditions.

Travel with Care

If you’re traveling during the monsoon, be sure to carry a well-stocked travel kit with your contact lens essentials. Include your lens case, cleaning solution, and rewetting drops, and keep them in a dry place to prevent contamination. This preparation ensures you’re ready to address any lens-related issues that may arise while on the go.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the monsoon season without compromising the comfort and safety of your contact lenses. Proper care and vigilance will help you navigate the challenges of the weather while keeping your eyes healthy and your vision clear.

</excerpt>

It was the night of deluge. It had never rained as much as it did on Wednesday for a long long time. Residents of the city remembered a similar happening sometime in mid-April in the early 1980s when the fury of the nature played havoc. Hundreds of cars had been left stranded that night and as a reporter with the Times of India and on the night shift, I had not only witnessed the horror but also had to report on it. More than 40 years down the line, it seems, nothing has changed in terms of preparedness. The civic authorities and the Administration were as unprepared as they were then. The only difference now was that despite having more facilities and resources at their command, the functionaries were thoroughly exposed. Their tall claims fell on the side as traffic snarls and water logging in the entire NCR region, forced those who were outside to face the wrath of the nature with virtually no working infra-structure. It has always been a great mystery why the infra-structure remains sub-standard despite thousands of crores pumped in improving it annually.

There is always the frozen frame of a bus submerged in water under the Minto Bridge which gets published in newspapers year after year. The Lutyens zone which was far better than other places is equally bad and there is virtually flooding at every roundabout. This time, the rains brought life to a halt around the new Parliament building as well as areas in the vicinity with reports of roof leaking and water-logging pouring in.

Apart from the heavy losses incurred in many areas, the desperation of civic authorities had its own story to tell. While new buildings have come up, adding to the pressure, the NDMC, was evidently unable to upgrade the corresponding infra-structure leading to complete chaos. The outskirts were no different. Water had accumulated on major roads and vehicles were stranded all over. The stretch between Rajokri and Kapeshera for instance, has a road filled with potholes for several years now. For some odd reasons, the concerned agency has not been able to rectify the faults. The airport was hit and many flights had to be diverted. Gurugram and NOIDA were no better and the lack of a proper drainage system was once again exposed. The CAG which goes through the spending of these agencies, must find out where has the money gone, and hold officials responsible.

More than 20 deaths have been reported in the NCR and there has to be some accountability. A few days earlier, there was flooding in the basement of a coaching centre, leading to the death of three UPSC aspirants. The police added to the problem by arresting the driver of a SUV, who had no connection with the tragedy. Fortunately, the courts have granted him bail. All these point to a complete breakdown, and those in charge, obviously do not seem to understand the issues, so to expect them to solve the problem is something which is too much to ask.

The blame game has commenced with the BJP holding the AAP responsible. The Congress has jumped into the fray as well and is trying to make its relevance felt. Overall, politics has further contributed to the misery of the people who need respite. The Lt.Governor who is the overall Boss, has to ensure that those who report to him must give him satisfactory answers. His brief should be to go beyond blaming the elected government but to ascertain how did things come to such a pass. Or everything was good on paper but the collapse denotes the real picture and not deception as presented by the bureaucracy. The Centre must understand that Delhi and the NCR have a peculiar kind of issues and only those who have served there in the past can help in identifying them.

Therefore, while bringing in functionaries from other states, every effort should be made to find whether they are equipped to deal with the situation. In their overenthusiasm to please their political masters, bureaucrats and officials, overlook a number of things and the outcome is for everyone to see. The traffic police should be involved in ensuring that roads do not get affected. The dividers on many thoroughfares contribute in accumulation of water since there is no drainage.

The construction of roads also is erratic and the slope on the sides is in the wrong direction. Lessons should be taken from the original Lutyens zone planning. Trees were planted many metres away from all roads which were single carriage ways. Even after they were expanded and made double carriage, the trees were not in the way but continued to serve their purpose. There were storm water drains on either side which the NDMC closed and replaced them with pipes which did not have the capacity to carry as much water which was getting accumulated, thus leading to flooding. Problems in Delhi and the NCR and other cities as well, should be looked into by experts and not bureaucrats who haven no accountability. Solutions have to be found.

Blaming political parties or the weather in this modern age is not the answer and not a step towards the future to make India into a super power. The difference between developed nations and the developing ones is very huge. Efficient functionaries can only bridge this gap.

</excerpt>

Henna has deep cultural significance in India, where it is traditionally used by women during weddings and festivals. This plant contains lawsone, a natural dye that binds well with hair keratin. Henna serves as a natural alternative to conventional permanent dyes, which often include harmful ingredients for both health and the environment.

Beyond its role in providing plant-based hair color, henna offers a multitude of benefits. Rich in tannins, lipids, nutrients, and other essential compounds for hair health, it naturally detoxifies hair from roots to tips. By deeply penetrating the scalp, henna conditions, strengthens, and revitalizes the hair. Its effects are further enhanced when mixed with other natural ingredients such as Amla and Brazilian herbs like juá, malva, and guaraná.
Natural hair care is essential for maintaining beautiful, long, and healthy hair. Detoxifying with henna helps keep hair revitalized, shiny, and in optimal condition. It’s crucial to avoid chemical products mixed with henna, such as heavy metals, PPD, resorcinol, and aggressive synthetic dyes, as well as shampoos and conditioners containing sulfates, synthetic fragrances, ammonia by-products (ethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine), EDTA, parabens, and other harmful ingredients.

Though some find the application of henna confusing and time-consuming, henna cream is now widely available with convenient applicators. These creams, often enriched with organic plant extracts from diverse regions and combined with nourishing oils like babassu, offer both hydration and color.

Henna creams are among the most natural and effective options for hair coloring and can be found in a variety of colors. They color hair without drying or damaging it, providing a comprehensive treatment from root to tip. By avoiding harsh ingredients such as ammonia, ammonia by-products, EDTA, synthetic fragrances, PPD, resorcinol, heavy metals, and parabens, these creams maintain hair’s health and beauty throughout the year.

Investing in treatments that hydrate and nourish your hair, such as those enriched with henna, rice protein, babassu oil, and cupuaçu butter, ensures longer-lasting color and protection from UV rays. These treatments offer reconstructive, nourishing, and hydrating benefits, providing essential nutrients to restore hair fiber, enhance shine, and strengthen your hair.

</excerpt>

A photograph capturing the aftermath of a heavy rainstorm in Delhi has recently gone viral, drawing attention not just for the impressive extent of the flooding but also for the striking scene of journalists maintaining their usual activities amidst the chaos.

The image, taken on Wednesday, shows the Press Club in Delhi submerged in ankle-deep water following torrential rains. The floodwaters have turned the club’s floor into a small lake, but it is the response of the club’s members that has captured widespread interest.

At the heart of the photograph is a table adorned with open bottles of alcohol and an assortment of snacks, typical fare for a social gathering. Despite the flooded surroundings, a group of men seated around the table appear completely at ease. Some are engrossed in their phones, others are exchanging greetings, and one man has even placed his legs up on a chair to keep them dry. The scene reflects a surprising normalcy amid the waterlogged environment.

In addition to the table’s occupants, the photograph shows other Press Club members wading through the room with their trousers rolled up, navigating the flood with a practical and composed attitude. Their willingness to carry on with their routine activities, despite the uncomfortable conditions, underscores a remarkable sense of resilience and adaptability.

After the post on X (formerly twitter) gained a lot of interactions, people started praising journalists for their hard work. Some gave it a humorous twist “A pool of journos, literally!” an individual commented. Another one commented “what a picture! Ye dilli hai mere yaar! Is desh ki rajdhani” another one added “Press journalists in Delhi are enjoying drinking and eating in this underwater food area which is a rare sight in India.”

</excerpt>

Despite receiving over 200 mm of rainfall in July, Delhi experienced unusually hot and humid conditions, marked by low wind speeds, high moisture levels, and a lack of significant weather systems. Experts attribute this to the monsoon trough remaining predominantly south of Delhi-NCR, closer to Central India, which resulted in only light to moderate, patchy rains.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Delhi’s average maximum temperature for July was 35.8°C, just above the long-period average (LPA). However, high humidity, consistently over 50% throughout the month, led to a Heat Index (HI) of 45.8°C. This HI, or ‘real feel,’ made the weather seem considerably warmer than the actual recorded maximum temperature.

Thermal discomfort was further compounded by a high average wet-bulb temperature of 28.9°C, with many days surpassing 30°C. Wet-bulb temperatures above 28°C pose challenges for physical labor, while temperatures over 32°C can be dangerous even for healthy individuals. At 35°C, the body’s ability to regulate temperature diminishes, risking heatstrokes and collapse.

Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet, explained that the monsoon trough’s position near Central India for most of July led to some cloud cover and moisture but inadequate rainfall. The region also lacked active weather systems, which might have brought rain and increased wind speeds.

Palawat noted that areas north of the monsoon trough, such as Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab, experienced similar weather due to easterly moisture-laden winds, which kept humidity levels high throughout the day. The only notable western disturbance in Delhi occurred between July 22 and 25.

As of 5:30 pm, Safdarjung recorded 203.7 mm of rainfall for the month, close to the LPA of 209.7 mm. Rain fell on 17 days out of 30, but no heavy rainfall was observed. In contrast, Delhi saw 243.3 mm of rainfall in June, largely due to a single-day deluge of 228.1 mm on June 28, and 384.6 mm in July 2023.

With the arrival of the monsoon season, road conditions across the country have worsened, and the Telgaon Panchayat area in Gumla, Jharkhand, is no exception. Despite being located just 3 km from the district headquarters, the village lacks a proper road, leaving residents to navigate challenging terrain, especially during the rainy season. The unpaved road becomes muddy and waterlogged, making it nearly impossible for villagers to commute safely.

Fed up with waiting for government intervention, the villagers decided to take matters into their own hands. They collaborated to repair the 3 km stretch of road from Phulwar Toli to Chaha Barha Toli. Men, women, youth, and children all participated in the effort, collecting donations to cover the costs of tractors, raw materials, and other necessary expenses.

Rekha Kujur, a resident of the village, explained that the community had repeatedly informed the local administration and representatives about the deteriorating road conditions through written applications. However, their pleas went unanswered. “Every time we appeal to the local representatives, they only give assurances and exploit us, but the work is never done,” she said.

Another villager, Namita Lakra, highlighted the dangers posed by the poor road conditions, noting that several people had accidents. “We have now managed to construct a better passable road, but we hope that the government will construct a concrete road here soon which will make commuting much easier for everyone,” Lakra added.

The Jharkhand villagers’ efforts to improve their infrastructure underscore a broader issue in rural India, where inadequate road conditions continue to hinder daily life and economic activities. As the monsoon rains exacerbate these challenges, the residents of Telgaon Panchayat hope that their initiative will prompt the government to take swift action to provide a more permanent solution.

Mumbai’s troubles are expected to worsen as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain for the next two to three days. The city has already been significantly affected by the ongoing monsoon rains. With more heavy rains anticipated on Monday, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, and an orange alert for July 23.

Waterlogging caused by heavy rain is disrupting traffic throughout the city. A video posted on X shows a bus speeding through flooded streets while people walk in knee-deep water in Kurla. The caption read, “Situation Worsening in Central Mumbai. Scenes from Kurla.”

In the past 24 hours leading up to Monday at 8 a.m., several areas in Mumbai received over 200 mm of rain. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s automated weather station, Trombay recorded the highest rainfall at 241 mm. The IMD’s Santacruz observatory reported 176 mm of rainfall, while the Colaba station recorded 71 mm.

A high tide of over five meters is expected around 12:50 p.m. Navi Mumbai, due to its below-sea-level location, may experience waterlogging in some low-lying areas.

In response to the high tide and ongoing rain, the Numampa Education Department and the Disaster Management Department have announced that schools in Navi Mumbai will close in the afternoon. The continuous rain has also led to a 5% increase in lake levels over the past day, with water stocks in the seven lakes reaching 47.29% on Monday morning.

</excerpt>

The monsoon season not only brings relief from the heat but also presents health challenges due to increased humidity and fluctuating temperatures. To maintain vitality and well-being during this period, adopting a balanced diet and incorporating multivitamins can be crucial.

Importance of a Monsoon-Specific Diet

Boosting Immunity

During the monsoon, our immune system is often compromised by weather changes. Ayush Aggarwal from Rasayanam Ayurveda emphasizes the consumption of Vitamin C-rich foods and antioxidants to strengthen immunity. Fruits like plums and sweet limes, along with sprouts, soups, probiotics, and herbal teas, are recommended daily.

Maintaining Digestive Health

High humidity can disrupt digestion, leading to issues like indigestion and bloating. Ayush Aggarwal suggests a diet rich in fiber, probiotics, and light, easily digestible foods to support digestive health. Avoiding heavy meals and outside junk food reduces the risk of gastrointestinal problems.

Hydration

Despite cooler temperatures, staying hydrated is essential. Adequate water intake and hydrating foods like coconut water and lemon water help maintain electrolyte balance and energy levels.

Multivitamins: Supporting Overall Health

Filling Nutrient Gaps

Even with a well-rounded diet, it may be challenging to meet all nutritional needs. Multivitamins containing vitamins C, D, and zinc can supplement these gaps, enhancing overall health and immunity.

Enhanced Immunity

Multivitamins play a pivotal role in boosting immunity during the monsoon. The combination of vitamins C, D, and zinc strengthens the immune system, aiding in the prevention of infections common during this season.

Tips for Monsoon Health

Dietary Adjustments

Nutritionist Arooshi Aggarwal advises limiting non-vegetarian intake due to higher susceptibility to bacterial infections. Opting for lighter meals like soups and avoiding heavy snacks helps in adapting to the seasonal changes effectively.

Physical Activity

Regular exercise, even for 30-45 minutes, is recommended to maintain metabolism and circadian rhythms affected by reduced sunlight and damp weather conditions.

Hydration Tips

Incorporate coconut water and lemon water into your daily routine to replenish electrolytes and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Navigating the monsoon season requires a tailored approach to diet and nutrition. By focusing on immunity, digestive health, hydration, and supplementing with multivitamins, you can ensure optimal health and well-being. Insights from Ayush Aggarwal and Arooshi Aggarwal provide practical guidelines to adapt your lifestyle effectively during this challenging season.

</excerpt>

Heavy rains are seen hitting many parts of Kerala, showing an action from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On Saturday, the IMD issued alerts across the state to warn residents about the severe weather conditions. Specifically, an orange alert was issued for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, indicating that these areas should be ready for potentially significant impacts from the weather. This alert advises residents and authorities to be alert and prepared for extreme conditions such as heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible flooding.

In addition to the orange alert, a yellow alert was issued for nine other districts in Kerala. A yellow alert signifies that these districts should stay updated about changing weather conditions that could lead to localized issues.

The decision to issue these alerts was taken due to the ongoing heavy rainfall affecting Kerala. These alerts are important as they help communities and authorities prepare for possible risks and take necessary precautions in advance to safeguard lives and property. It is essential for everyone to closely look at updates from the IMD and follow safety guidelines during this period of intense weather activity.

Looking ahead, the weather department has forecasted thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and winds specifically in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts for the day. Furthermore, an orange alert has been extended for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts from June 14 to June 16. This extended alert period underscores the potential for sustained severe weather conditions in these regions, urging residents to remain alert and prepared.

Residents are strongly advised to stay updated on weather forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions, and take necessary precautions to ensure personal safety and minimize any potential impacts from the unstable weather. It is advised to not leave your house during the heavy rainfall for utmost safety of you and your family

</excerpt>

The Karnataka Police devised an innovative punishment for tourists who defied a ban on bathing in a waterfall during the monsoon season. When some tourists disregarded warning signs and entered the overflowing Charmadi Falls in Mudigere for a bath, the police took action by taking away their clothes.

Reportedly, the group ignored signs around the waterfall prohibiting entry into the water during the rainy season. They left their clothes on the bank and ventured into the waterfall, climbing rocks in a restricted area.

Upon noticing the men trying to climb the rocks, Chikmagalur division police officers simply collected their discarded garments and walked away. A video captures the men pleading with the officers to return their clothes.

Watch the video below:

– A ban sign was put up near the waterfall.

– People flocked there, took off their clothes, and started bathing.

– The Karnataka police arrived and took away the clothes of those bathing.

Modern problems need modern solutions. ?

According to News18, the Karnataka Police eventually returned the clothes after giving the tourists a warning. They also provided safety instructions before letting them go.

Footage of the police walking away with the clothes has elicited many amused reactions. Some social media users praised the officers for their creative approach, while others suggested the idea should be used more widely.

“This is called doing nothing but done enough,” commented one X user.

“Excellent decision!” another user commended the police. One said this “superb” solution should be implemented across the country.

X user Ashish Jain remarked: “Although it might not be legal, but what can police do if ppl don’t understand and police can’t watch each corner, it’s too big a country.”

</excerpt>

During the monsoon season, many people experience lethargy and joint pain due to fluctuations in atmospheric pressure, humidity, and temperature. From an Ayurvedic perspective, these aches stem from imbalances in the vata and kapha doshas, which are often exacerbated by the damp, cold weather typical of the season.

While the rain can be refreshing, waking up stiff and sore can put a damper on your day. Here are some effective Ayurvedic remedies to help you tackle the monsoon blues.

Warm water: Drinking warm water throughout the day aids digestion and detoxification, which is vital during the monsoon season to balance the digestive fire (agni) and prevent toxin buildup.

Dry Ginger Powder Tea: Boiling dry ginger powder with water and drinking it twice daily – morning and evening – can help reduce the aggravated vata (air) dosha that causes joint pain and aches during the monsoon.

Castor Oil Application: Applying castor oil to the affected joint or muscle area can help lubricate the joint and reduce inflammation.

Mustard Oil Massage: Gently massaging warm mustard oil, optionally with added essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint, into the affected muscles or joints can help soothe pain.

Fenugreek (methi) Seed poultice: Soaking fenugreek seeds in water overnight, grinding them into a paste, and applying it to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and pain.

Epsom Salt Bath: Adding 1-2 cups of Epsom salt to warm water and soaking the affected area can help relax muscles and reduce pain due to the magnesium content.

By incorporating these Ayurvedic remedies, you can effectively combat common monsoon aches and pains and maintain your health during this season.

There’s nothing quite like a plate of hot bhajiya paired with a steaming cup of chai to enhance the cool weather experience. While onion and potato pakodas are household favorites, consider trying the famed mirchi bhajiyas from Rajasthan or maroi nakuppi fritters from the Northeast. Maroi nakuppi pakodas feature garlic chives fried with besan, chilli powder, green chillies, and salt for a regional twist.

Samosas

Samosas

A universally loved evening snack, samosas always pair perfectly with kadak chai. This monsoon, switch up the traditional aloo samosa and try a rich filling of chicken or mutton keema lightly fried with onions, spices of choice, and a hint of tomato ketchup for an unforgettable flavor.

Maggi

Maggi

Nothing beats a bowl of piping hot Maggi with your evening tea as you watch the rain pour. For a delightful twist, add some chilli and cheese along with pepper powder to your regular Maggi recipe, creating a cheesy, indulgent dish that appeals to everyone.

Momo

Momos

Another versatile monsoon treat is momos. Prepare momo wrappers with your favorite fillings while your chai brews. A unique variation inspired by Nepal is Jhol momo, where a sauce made from soybeans, peanuts, sesame seeds, tomato, onion, ginger-garlic paste, and lemon juice enhances the flavor, creating a hearty dish.

Bhel Puri

Bhel Puri

A quick and easy snack when the rain hits, bhel puri can be made with pantry staples. Instead of the usual Mumbai-style bhel, try a Jammu-inspired recipe using puffed rice mixed with cornflakes, roasted chana dal, sev, tomatoes, onions, green chillies, coriander, lemon juice, and a spice mix of salt, red chilli powder, and chaat masala.

Aloo Tikki

Aloo Tikki

No list would be complete without aloo tikki. For a twist, replace the potatoes with soya chunks. Mix soya granules with boiled potatoes, bread, besan, spices, green chillies, coriander, and lemon juice for added zest. Fry and serve with tomato ketchup alongside a steaming cup of tea.

Bhutta

Bhutta

One of the most satisfying snacks during cold weather is roasted corn on the cob. Enjoy this decadent treat with a hot cup of Assam tea.

</excerpt>

Monsoon is definitely the most preferred and favored time of the year cause of the comfort and peace it brings. There’s something so romantic about feeling the raindrops on our body and dancing in the rain. But if you were to realize how the same rain that brings us eternal comfort can be a reason you might struggle with various skin problems, what would your reaction possibly be? Thus to avoid facing such problems you need a fool-proof skincare routine. Humidity comes in handy with the overjoy monsoon brings, by adding few habits to your skincare routine, treat your skin with extra care so that it blends in with the climate as well.

How is your skin affected by monsoon?

The temperature in monsoon is pretty much unstable and keeps on fluctuating between hot and cold. Since our skin is also a part of nature, it also keeps on fluctuating between dry and oily, especially during monsoon. The skin becomes an inventory for sweat, sebum and excessive oil due to the high humidity in the air. Often resulting in severe breakouts, clogged pores, blackheads and acne. While this isn’t the only factor, we tend to sweat a lot during monsoon which leads to dehydration. Dehydration affects skin as well, leaving you with dry and patchy skin. That’s why you need a skincare routine that helps you deal with all of this, with ease.

How to take care of you skin in rainy season

Mentioned below are few tips and habits you can adopt that your skin would love and thank you for.

A gentle cleanser

First step of skincare is a cleanser. A cleanser helps in cleaning all the dirt, oil and sebum that has been resting on your face the whole day. Although there are different cleansers to opt for, its best to go for a gentle soap free cleanser during monsoon. A gentle cleanser is best option cause its not harsh on your skin and wont strip off the natural oils. Ensure to use it two times a day- day and night.

Exfoliation

Another crucial step to add to your skincare routine is exfoliation. It helps in cleaning all the impurities that are stuck within your pores and to buff away the dead skin.Exfoliation is for deep cleansing your pores, that’s why it should be done only 2-3 times a week. This allows other products to penetrate deep into your skin and be more effective.

Use A Clay Mask

Another commonly suggested product during monsoon are Clay masks. These are natural face packs that are proven to be best for breakouts and to calm the skin, which makes them a great fit during monsoon. It also helps in deep cleansing the skin and as well as tackling any impurities.

Control Oiliness

No one likes being sticky and oily the whole day, especially during monsoon. Which leaves us with the goal of tackling oil and dirt. Humidity plays a very important role in leaving your skin sticky and oily. So to reduce this, using oil control moisturizer is recommended. Moisturizing is one of the most effective and popular method of oil control.

Use A sunscreen

A misconception about sunscreen is, it should only be used while going out in sun. This is one of the biggest myth about skincare, sunscreen should be used practically every day no matter the weather as it acts as a protective layer for our skin. While applying sunscreen try to apply it on your neck as well. Even if you can’t see the sunlight, UV rays can still peek through and find its way through the clouds. So it’s important to wear SPF every day.

Remove Your Makeup Before Sleeping

Wearing makeup to bed is responsible for clogged pores that leads to breakouts. Using a cleanser to remove makeup is suggested as it helps your skin to breathe at night.

Take Care Of Your Lips

Lips are one of the sensitive parts. Monsoon season can be especially harsh on your lips, leaving them chapped and dry, even cracked in the worst cases. Therefore taking care of your lips during monsoon is important.

</excerpt>

Along with the rainy season, comes a problem that is faced by many. In this gloomy season joint pain is seen as a common issue in households.

“These pains and aches are caused by a disbalance in vata or air proportion in the body.” stated Dr Manisha Mishra, an Ayurveda physician. This definitely sounds like a worrisome issue but Dr. Manisha provided us with two helpful remedies. One being dry ginger powder tea, which helps in reducing vata. “Boil dry ginger powder with water, and have it twice daily – Morning and evening,” said Dr Manisha Mishra.

Additional remedy suggested by Dr Manisha Mishra is castor oil. Applying castor oil on the affected parts can bring relief. “Lubrication of the joint gets better and you walk better,” says Dr Mishra.

What is the cause of aches and pains during monsoon?

Humidity And Cool Wind

Humidity and cool winds are seen frequently during the weather.

“In Ayurveda, this period known as visarga kala, is when the earth moves away from the sun, and the moon’s influence increases, making the environment cooler. The monsoon season is associated with the vata and kapha doshas, which become aggravated during this time. Vata dosha, representing air and space elements, becomes imbalanced and kapha dosha, representing water and earth elements, also increases,” clarified shlloka, classical hatha yoga teacher and lifestyle expert.

Vata dosha

Vata dosha is increased due to cool, moist and humid weather conditions, which further leads to causing instability in one’s body.“This imbalance causes joints to lose moisture, leading to friction, inflammation, joint pain, muscle aches and stiffness,” stated shlloka.

Kapha

Since kapha represents water, the heavy and wet envirionment of the monsoon season gives a platform to kapha dosha to increase.

“Excess kapha leads to fluid accumulation in the joints, causing inflammation and swelling, worsening conditions like arthritis, bursitis and tendinitis,” mentioned Shlloka.

Cool, Damp Weather

She further explained how cool, damp weather leads to weakness of digestive fire (agni), which results in improper digestion and the accumulation of toxins. “Ama or toxins or undigested metabolic waste that accumulates in the body due to impaired digestion contributes to inflammation and pain in various parts of the body,” said Shlloka.

Do These Remedies Work?

Shlloka analyzed the remedies suggested by DR Mishra, agreeing and adding more to it she recommended applying castor oil packs – a clean cloth soaked in warm castor oil- on the affected area provides relief. “Leave it on for 30-45 minutes, 1-2 times a day, to reduce inflammation and promote circulation,” said Shlloka.

She also suggested few more remedies that are proven to be a good help in providing relief. These are as follows:

Mustard oil massage

Take some warm mustard oil and gently massage it onto the affected area.

For pain relief, add a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint to the warm mustard oil.

This massage is suggested to practice daily, especially before bedtime, to soothe pain.

Methi seed poultice

Soak methi seeds in water overnight and form a paste.

Apply the paste on the affected area and cover it with a clean cloth.

For best results keep it on for at least 40 minutes, then rinse it off.

Epsom salt bath

Add 1- 2 cups of Epsom Salt to warm water and soak the affected area for 20-30 minutes.

The magnesium in Epsom salt helps relax muscles and reduce pain.

Add a few drops of essential oils like lavender or chamomile for added relaxation.

Herbal compress

Boil water and add a handful of herbs like ginger, turmeric or ashwagandha.

Soak a clean cloth in the herbal decoction and apply it to the affected area.

Leave the compress on for almost 30 minutes, 1-2 times a day.

</excerpt>

Assam’s tea industry is reeling from extreme weather, with May’s heatwaves and July’s floods causing a major production slump. This erratic climate has led to a nearly 20% price increase in just one year. Assam, which contributes over half of India’s tea output and 13% of global production, is at the heart of this crisis.

As you enjoy your daily cup of tea, hidden beneath the serene greenery of Assam’s tea gardens, a brewing storm of climate change and devastating floods threatens to escalate the cost of India’s beloved beverage.By the end of June, average tea prices soared to Rs. 217.53 per kg, reflecting a nearly 20 percent rise from the previous year, as reported by the Tea Board’s data.

Jorhat, India – August 30, 2011: a group of female employees harvest the second flush of tea leaves. They are wearing wide cane hats, saris and carrying wicker baskets to place the picked tea leaves. It is a bright sunny and hot day on the plantation which is in Jorhat, Assam, north east India.

Assam tea, known for its rich, malty flavor and health benefits, is facing severe production challenges. Historically, the region’s ideal mix of sunlight and rainfall, which has defined Assam tea since the early 1820s, is now threatened by climate change.

Temperatures below 26.6 degrees Celsius reduce production in Assam’s 82 tea gardens, while rising temperatures worsen pest infestations, further jeopardizing yields. In response, the Assam State Cabinet has approved the Assam State Action Plan for Climate Change-II for 2021-2030, aiming to bolster resilience against climate impacts. However, these measures alone may not be enough.

Assam’s tea gardens must adapt swiftly to changing conditions to protect the future of this beloved beverage. Without effective, concerted efforts, the cost of your morning cup of Assam tea may continue to rise, reflecting the growing impact of climate change on this vital industry.

</excerpt>

India’s annual monsoon, spanning from July to September, brings much-needed relief from heat but also increases the risk of various diseases and infections due to favorable conditions for microbial growth. The high humidity facilitates the spread of viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens, making individuals twice as likely to be exposed compared to other seasons.

To stay healthy during the monsoon, it’s crucial to adopt preventive measures promptly. Early diagnosis plays a pivotal role in mitigating the impact of monsoon-related illnesses. Basic hygiene practices such as regular handwashing, maintaining clean surroundings, and consuming safe, hygienically prepared food can significantly reduce the risk of infections.

Why Do Diseases Spread Faster in the Monsoon?

During the monsoon season, the risk of exposure to viruses, bacteria, and other infections increases significantly due to the high moisture content in the air. This environment facilitates the thriving of harmful microorganisms, leading to a heightened transmission of diseases. Many of these illnesses often go undetected until they significantly impact one’s health. However, early diagnosis and adherence to basic preventive measures can greatly enhance safety during this period of heightened disease prevalence in India. Taking proactive steps such as maintaining good hygiene, avoiding stagnant water, and ensuring adequate ventilation can help mitigate the risks associated with monsoon-related diseases, thereby safeguarding health and well-being.

Common Monsoon Diseases in India

The most common diseases during monsoons are transmitted through 4 major mediums: mosquitoes, water, air, and contaminated food. Here’s what you need to know about them:

Mosquito-borne Diseases

mosquito borne diseases

Monsoons are the breeding season for mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases. India bears a huge burden of mosquito-borne diseases, contributing 34% of global dengue and 11% of global malaria cases.

– Malaria: Caused by Anopheles mosquitoes breeding in water channels, leading to high fever.
– Dengue: Spread by Aedes mosquitoes found in stagnant water, causing fever and fatigue.
– Chikungunya:Transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, known for joint pain and stiffness.

Preventive Measures Against Mosquito-borne Diseases

– Use mosquito nets indoors.
– Eliminate stagnant water around your home.
– Maintain cleanliness and regularly clean bathrooms.
– Use mosquito repellents before going outdoors.

Water-borne Diseases

Water-borne Diseases

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that over 3.4 million people in India suffer from water-borne diseases. Children are especially vulnerable due to their developing immune systems, making them more susceptible to these illnesses. The most prevalent water-borne diseases include:

– Typhoid: Spread through contaminated food and water, causing fever and headache.
– Cholera: Resulting from poor sanitation and causing diarrhoea.
– Leptospirosis: Contracted from dirty water, leading to muscle pain and fever.
– Jaundice: Spread through contaminated food and water, causing liver dysfunction.

Preventive Measures Against Water-borne Diseases

– Boil water before drinking and wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
– Keep food covered and maintain personal hygiene.
– Ensure open drains and potholes are covered in your locality.

Monsoon brings with it various air-borne infections caused by tiny pathogens (disease-causing viruses) that spread through the air. These infections include common flu, viral fever, cold, cough, and sore throat. While they are mostly mild and cause minor issues in adults, senior citizens and children, with their weaker or developing immune systems, are more susceptible to these infections during this season. The most common air-borne diseases during monsoon are:

– Common Cold and Flu: Spread through the air, causing symptoms like runny nose and sore throat.
– Influenza: Easily transmitted from person to person during the monsoon season.

Preventive Measures Against Air-borne Diseases

– Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
– Drink warm water frequently and avoid contaminated drinking water.
– Ensure proper ventilation at home and keep children away from infected individuals.

General Health Tips for Monsoon Wellness

– Stay hydrated with boiled water.
– Maintain personal hygiene to prevent fungal infections.
– Wear full-sleeved clothing to protect skin and eat a balanced diet for strong immunity.
– Wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly before consumption.

Despite the joys of the monsoon season, it’s crucial to be aware of potential health risks and take preventive measures. Consult a doctor if you experience any symptoms and avoid self-medication. By staying informed and proactive, you can enjoy a safe and healthy monsoon in India.

</excerpt>

When the monsoon season arrives in India, the choice between a windcheater and a raincoat becomes crucial for staying dry and comfortable amidst the rain. Both serve the purpose of protecting against rain and wind, but they differ in design and functionality, catering to varying weather conditions and lifestyles.

Windcheaters are lightweight garments crafted from synthetic materials like nylon or polyester, designed to repel wind and light rain. They offer versatility with adjustable hoods and are ideal for cities experiencing occasional showers or breezy conditions, providing protection without bulkiness.

In contrast, raincoats are heavy-duty outerwear made from waterproof materials such as PVC, polyurethane, or Gore-Tex. They offer comprehensive protection against heavy rainfall and come in styles like trench coats or ponchos, suitable for regions with prolonged or intense rain. Raincoats are preferred for outdoor activities and in coastal areas where staying dry during extended rain periods is crucial.

Choosing between a windcheater and a raincoat depends largely on the specific weather conditions and personal preferences. Here’s a breakdown of when each might be more suitable:

Windcheater

Cooler Climates: Windcheaters are ideal for places where the temperatures are moderate and there’s a likelihood of windy conditions during the monsoon. They provide protection against wind chill while offering some water resistance.

Breathability: Windcheaters often offer better breathability compared to raincoats, making them more comfortable in humid conditions. This can be beneficial in monsoon seasons where it’s not constantly raining but remains damp.

Outdoor Activities: If you’re engaged in activities that involve a lot of movement or physical exertion, a windcheater’s lighter weight and flexibility might be more suitable than a raincoat.

Raincoat

Heavy Rain: In regions where heavy rainfall is frequent, a raincoat with waterproof material and sealed seams offers better protection against getting wet.

Durability: Raincoats are typically more durable and provide full coverage from head to knees or ankles, depending on the style, which is advantageous during prolonged exposure to rain.

Versatility: Raincoats can often double as windbreakers if they are designed with appropriate features. They usually have hoods and adjustable cuffs to keep water out effectively.

Ultimately, both windcheaters and raincoats serve important roles in monsoon preparation. They offer practical solutions to staying dry while allowing individuals to adapt to their specific needs and the weather conditions they face. The right choice ensures comfort and protection against the whims of the monsoon season in India.

A recent incident in Muzaffarnagar district has drawn significant online attention. A newly constructed road caved in due to overflowing canal water, as captured in a viral video.

The video starts with a man recording the road, with three other men visible in the background. Suddenly, the road collapses, forming a massive sinkhole, followed by a strong canal water flow that splits the road in two. A voice in the video urgently warns, “Bhai shaab! Picche hatt jao (Oh brother! Stay away).”

Journalist Sachin Gupta shared the video, noting, “This live video of the road collapse is from Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The canal water has filled the fields. A lot of crops of the farmers have been destroyed.”

Shared on July 6, the video has garnered over 1,07,000 views. Many social media users criticized the authorities for endangering villagers’ lives. One user commented, “The reason behind this flooding is that after independence, no arrangement for drainage of rain water has been made by any government.

On the contrary, the system of rain water drainage from the British rule has been destroyed. Sometimes it is by encroachment by people and sometimes by unplanned government construction.” Another user remarked, “A unique example has been set by building a canal in the middle of the road.”

One user sarcastically added, “This contractor should be awarded. He has not laid the pipe under the road. He has just made it like that.”

In other related news, 15 engineers were suspended in Bihar after 12 bridges collapsed due to heavy rain across various districts.

To raise public awareness, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has printed 40 lakh pamphlets and will launch a radio jingle campaign. Additionally, ASHA workers have received training on dengue prevention, and genome sequencing of dengue samples has been intensified to track prevalent strains.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and distributing “dengue homework cards” in schools to educate students. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) are conducting inspections and deploying pumps to remove stagnant water in residential and industrial areas.

Tips to Protect Yourself from Dengue

Wear Protective Clothing: Ensure you wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially during peak mosquito activity times.

Use Mosquito Repellents: Apply insect repellent on exposed skin and clothing to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Eliminate Standing Water: Regularly check and eliminate standing water in and around your home, as it serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Use Mosquito Nets: Sleep under mosquito nets, especially if you live in an area with a high incidence of dengue.

Keep Your Environment Clean: Ensure that your surroundings are clean and free of debris where water can collect and mosquitoes can breed.

Install Screens on Windows and Doors: Use screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

Educate Your Family: Inform your family members about dengue prevention and ensure they follow the necessary precautions.

By taking these proactive measures and staying informed, you can significantly reduce the risk of dengue during the monsoon season.
