Shubman Gill Breaks the Curse, Starts a New Era

<excerpt>Shubman Gill breaks Dhoni’s Edgbaston record, leading India to a historic Test win. A generational shift has begun.
</excerpt>

It took 58 years and nine attempts, but India have finally won a Test at Edgbaston on Sunday, Shubman Gill and his team rewrote history, defeating England in the 2nd Test to level the series 1-1.

This wasn’t just a win—it was a turning point for Indian cricket in England. Leading from the front, Shubman Gill scored a double century and a hundred in one of the most dominant batting performances by an Indian captain in recent times.

India Dominate on England’s Stronghold

Gill’s brilliance wasn’t a solo show it was Mohammed Siraj and Akaash Deep backed it up with five-wicket hauls each, as England crumbled on a surface they’ve long dominated. The bowling, the batting, the energy—this was India like never before at Edgbaston.

A ground that once haunted Indian teams is now a proud part of their legacy.

Gill Achieves What Dhoni and Sachin Couldn’t

Here’s the headline everyone’s talking about—Shubman Gill has done something even MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar couldn’t. Neither managed a Test win at Edgbaston during their careers. But Gill did, for many fans, this felt like the official passing of the torch.

A “Black Day” for Dhoni England Legacy?

Some even called it a “Black Day” for Dhoni’s England legacy—not out of disrespect, but to mark the shift. A new generation has arrived, and they’re not just playing—they’re making history.

This victory wasn’t about breaking a streak it was about redefining leadership, hunger, and purpose.

The Gill Era Has Officially Begun

Gill has stepped up not only as a batsman but as a captain. His composure, decisions, and hunger to win have set the tone for what many now call the Gill Era.

On the other side, Siraj continues to evolve into India’s most reliable fast bowler. Together, this team is not here to match the past. They’re here to surpass it.

Edgbaston, once India’s nightmare, is now a symbol of change. Gill’s team didn’t just win a Test—they changed the narrative, delivered what Dhoni and others couldn’t, and gave Indian fans a moment they’ll never forget.

History has been made; the Gill era has begun.

</excerpt>

At Edgbaston on Friday, the red-ball rise of 23-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal continued as he became the joint-fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. He achieved the milestone in his 40th innings, equalling the record held by Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Follows in Tendulkar’s Footsteps

Jaiswal mentioned the milestone when he scored his 10th run for India’s second innings on Day 3 of the second Test against England. He was also the second-youngest Indian to achieve the feat at 23 years and 188 days old – Sachin Tendulkar at 20 years, 330 days remains the only younger player to have achieved this.

The milestone arrived on the heels of another elegant knock. In the first innings, Jaiswal had scored a mature 87, displaying maturity beyond his years. He rode out the initial movement, stitched together important partnerships – 72 with Karun Nair and 54 with Shubman Gill and played with thought-out aggression before becoming the victim of Ben Stokes.

Fewest innings to 2,000 Test runs (India)

40 innings – Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Yashasvi Jaiswal

43 innings – Vijay Hazare, Gautam Gambhir

44 innings – Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar

45 innings – Sourav Ganguly

46 innings – Cheteshwar Pujara

Yashasvi Jaiswal Crosses 4,000 First-Class Runs

Jaiswal also went past 4,000 first-class runs in the knock, achieving the milestone in his 40th match at a rate of almost 59. His First-Class score consists of 14 tons and 14 half-centuries – a testimony to his desire for big scores.

Since his Test debut in 2023 with a scintillating 171 in Roseau, the left-handed batsman has blossomed into one of India’s most dependable hitters. He was India’s top performer in the home series against England at the start of the year, making 712 runs at 89.00 – the second-highest by an Indian in a bilateral Test series.

Siraj and Akash Deep Rock England Despite Record Stand

While that was on, Mohammed Siraj gave 6 for 70, and Akash Deep impressed with 4 for 88, as India dismissed England for 407 in their first innings – leading by 180 runs. England had threatened to reduce the deficit with a record 303-run partnership between Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184 not out), but early blows by Siraj – including the ones of Joe Root (22) and Ben Stokes (0) – dented England’s top order. Akash Deep snapped the key partnership later by removing Brook in the post-tea session.

With Jaiswal continuing to churn out milestones and pace attack functioning under pressure, India will carry a lot of positives to the last two days at Edgbaston.

</excerpt>

In a heartfelt gesture that has resonated with fans across the cricketing world, Indian captain Rohit Sharma presented pacer Mohammed Siraj with a special ring in recognition of his impactful performances during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Rohit Sharma gives the Special ring from the T20I World Cup to Siraj ❤️?? pic.twitter.com/ztFhEDCgFo

The moment, shared widely on social media, showed Rohit embracing Siraj before handing over the commemorative ring, acknowledging the fast bowler’s consistency and firepower on cricket’s grandest T20 stage. Siraj played a crucial role in India’s campaign, delivering with both the new ball and at the death, helping the team reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Key Role of Siraj in India’s World Cup Campaign

Spirited team performances and tactical maturity marked India’s run in the 2024 edition, as Siraj emerged as a vital cog in the bowling attack during the first half of the tournament played in America. Known for his aggression, discipline, and ability to generate swing in tough conditions, the Hyderabad-born speedster picked up key wickets in the powerplay overs and regularly put pressure on opposition batters.

His economy rate and wicket-taking abilities in crunch matches helped India tighten their grip in must-win scenarios. Experts and fans alike credited his efforts as one of the cornerstones of India’s bowling unit in the tournament.

A Gesture of Leadership and Camaraderie by Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma reportedly initiated the ring presentation as part of a growing tradition in the Indian dressing room that recognises individual brilliance to foster camaraderie and motivation. The captain’s personal touch in honouring Siraj reflects the tight-knit atmosphere cultivated under his leadership.

Fans on social media were quick to celebrate the moment, with hashtags like #Siraj, #Rohit, and #T20WC trending shortly after the video was posted. Many lauded Rohit’s leadership style, praising his ability to uplift his teammates while maintaining a focus on team goals.

Looking Ahead

With eyes now on future assignments, this symbolic gesture has only strengthened the unity within the squad. For Siraj, the recognition marks another milestone in what has been a meteoric rise in international cricket.

As the Indian team builds towards the next global challenge, moments like these underscore the emotional and cultural richness that continues to define Indian cricket.

</excerpt>

Pacer Mohammed Siraj on Sunday revealed he was initially struggling to cope after being left out of the Indian team for the Champions Trophy at the start of this year. Siraj turned in a star performance to come back figures of 4/17 as Gujarat Titans cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League match.

Siraj on Champions Trophy Omission

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Siraj remarked, “At one time, I was not able to digest it (having not been picked for Champions Trophy) but I kept my spirits up and worked on my fitness and game.” He added, “Whatever mistakes I was making, I worked on those and I’m enjoying my bowling, “As a professional, when you are consistently with the Indian team, a doubt grows in your mind (on him being dropped) but I cheered myself up and was looking forward to the IPL.

“When you execute what you are trying to deliver, you stay at the top. When you move the ball both in and out and it works instinctively, it gives you a different feeling.” Siraj was thrilled to be able to play so well with his parents in the stands cheering him on.

“When you come to your home ground, it’s a special feeling. My family was there in the crowd and that lifted me up. I have played seven years for RCB. I have worked hard on my bowling and also on my mindset, it’s working really well for me,” Siraj said.

Gill Praises Bowlers As Siraj Leads The Way

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill showered praise on his bowlers following their easy win over hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad. Gill called them “game-changers” in the shortest form of the game.

“Bowlers are game-changers, especially in this format. Lot of people talk about T20s, batting and hitting, but we think matches are won by bowlers and that is why there is a lot of emphasis on bowlers (in this franchise).” Gill led from the front with the bat, finishing not out on 61 off 43 balls. The captain was also happy to see talented Washington Sundar performing on GT debut.

“He (Washington) was very close (to playing) in the game against Mumbai. He was padded the whole game, but with the impact player rule, it gives you an opportunity to play someone else (if you need an extra bowler),” Gill said of Washington.

“It was all about having a good partnership, and we said once we are set, we will take it from there.” About Siraj, Gill said, “The energy he brings is tremendous. When playing against him, you want him in your team. His energy is infectious.”

Washington Sundar on His Role

On his part, Washington said the advice from his captain was to take the game deep, “Skipper kept telling me to play as deep as possible. Got off to a good start and wanted to bat as deep as possible and finish for the team.

“This has been the trend in Hyderabad in the last few years. In the second innings, the wicket gets better and easier to chase 160-170 on the board. I was well aware of it and it helped me.”

SRH skipper Pat Cummins said, “Not a traditional Hyderabad wicket, tough to get fluency in your innings. At the end there, it did not spin as much as we thought. A few (runs) short and they batted well,” he added.

</excerpt>

Ahead of Gujarat Titans’ next IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, their director of cricket, Vikram Solanki, praised Mohammed Siraj for his excellent spell in the previous match. The right-arm pacer had delivered a standout performance against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Siraj bowled his full quota of four overs and took 3 wickets for just 19 runs. His tight and aggressive bowling helped control the opposition’s scoring. As a result, he was named Player of the Match.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Solanki said, “Sometimes we expect and ask a lot of young cricketers, and somebody that has achieved as much as Siraj has, sometimes we are very quick to judge one or two performances. He is exceptional since he joined us.”

Siraj gets back in rhythm

Although Siraj had a rough start with Gujarat Titans, he bounced back strongly against his former team, RCB. He looked sharp and confident throughout his spell.

First, he dismissed Devdutt Padikkal with a delivery that came in sharply and knocked over the stumps. Siraj then celebrated in style, copying Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous move.

In his second over, he bowled at 144 kmph and clean bowled Phil Salt, adding a second wicket to his tally. Later, in the death overs, he returned to remove Liam Livingstone, who had scored 54 runs. Siraj forced a top edge that ended Livingstone’s stay at the crease. That dismissal also dented RCB’s chances of crossing the 200-run mark.

Gujarat Titans climbing the table

Currently, Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, sit in third place on the IPL 2025 points table. They have won two out of their three matches and collected four points so far. Their next game is against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. The match will take place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Squads for the match

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kamindu Mendis, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Aniket Verma, Pat Cummins (c), Harshal Patel, Simarjeet Singh, Mohammed Shami, Zeeshan Ansari, Abhinav Manohar, Wiaan Mulder, Jaydev Unadkat, Rahul Chahar, Adam Zampa, Atharva Taide, Eshan Malinga, Sachin Baby.

Gujarat Titans (GT): Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Jos Buttler (wk), Sherfane Rutherford, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia, Arshad Khan, Rashid Khan, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Ishant Sharma, Glenn Phillips, Anuj Rawat, Mahipal Lomror, Washington Sundar, Jayant Yadav, Karim Janat, Kulwant Khejroliya, Gerald Coetzee, Manav Suthar, Kumar Kushagra, Gurnoor Brar, Nishant Sindhu.

Mohammed Siraj’s aggression became the center of attention due to his on-field actions on Day 2 of the third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While one moment contributed to India securing a wicket, another incident created tension with Ravindra Jadeja.

Siraj’s Throw Sparks Conflict with Jadeja

After lunch, a dramatic incident unfolded. Travis Head pushed a ball toward the offside and went for a quick single. In response, Siraj quickly charged, collected the ball, and threw it forcefully toward the non-striker’s end. Unfortunately, the throw missed its mark and flew over the batter. Jadeja, trying to save the situation, leaped to stop the ball but hurt his fingers in the process.

As a result, Jadeja expressed his frustration and scolded Siraj while shaking his injured hand. Although Jadeja avoided a serious injury, his irritation was clear.

Commentator Mark Nicholas humorously captured the moment. He remarked, “There is a bit of civil war on the field as Siraj’s enthusiasm gets the better of him. He flung the ball so hard that it could have gone for four byes, but Jadeja gave him a right look. He must have said, ‘You almost broke my finger, pal. Take it easy.’”

Travis Head Dominates Indian Bowlers

Meanwhile, Travis Head continued his impressive form and dominated the Indian attack. This century was his third in four Tests against India. His aggressive batting firmly shifted momentum in Australia’s favor.

Earlier in the day, India started strong. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed both Australian openers, and Nitish Reddy took another wicket to pile on the pressure. However, in the afternoon session, Head and Steve Smith turned the game around.

Head reached his ninth career Test century in just 115 balls, showcasing his dominance with 13 boundaries. At the same time, Smith played a solid supporting role, scoring a composed half-century. Together, they built an unbeaten 159-run partnership for the fourth wicket, frustrating the Indian bowlers.

India Struggles

Despite their early success, the Indian bowlers seemed to run out of ideas as the session progressed. Head’s aggressive play and Smith’s steady approach left them with little room to regain control.

Overall, the day showcased both Head’s brilliance with the bat and the tension within the Indian camp. With Australia taking a commanding position, the remainder of the match promises even more drama and excitement.

Sandpaper Reference

The fan, wearing an India jersey, was instructed to leave after showing the sandpaper. This act referred to the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal when Australian players Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft were banned for using sandpaper to alter the ball. Consequently, the Indian fan’s actions caused a mix of cheers and jeers from the Adelaide crowd.

Security Intervention

Shortly after, security guards intervened and escorted the fan out of the stands. Despite this, he continued to wave the sandpaper in the air. This incident, of course, directly referred to the 2018 scandal, which led to Smith and Warner being banned for 12 months, while Bancroft received a nine-month suspension.

On-Field Tensions

The fan’s ejection came on the heels of a heated exchange between Siraj and Head in the second Test. As a result, both players received one demerit point from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Additionally, Siraj was fined 20% of his match fees.

Future Predictions

As the series is tied at 1-1, former cricketer Harbhajan Singh predicted that tensions would likely escalate again in the upcoming matches. He said, “What I feel personally is, the things will definitely get heated from the next Test match again, but whatever incident happened here, should be left here in Adelaide.”

The third Test will begin in Brisbane on December 14.

Siraj faced a 20% reduction from his match fee, while Head avoided any financial penalties but was reprimanded for his verbal exchange with the Indian pacer.

Both players were each handed one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.

“Siraj has been fined 20% of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching article 2. 5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel regarding ‘using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal,’” the ICC announced.

“Head was also penalized for infringing Article 2. 13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which concerns the ‘abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match,’” the statement added.

The occurrence unfolded after Siraj directed an expletive-laden farewell at Head, who had previously struck him for a six. Siraj then bowled a yorker that dismissed Head for a well-played 140. The dismissal ignited a fierce exchange as Head reacted to the provocation, escalating the situation.

The Adelaide Oval crowd, displeased with Siraj’s send-off towards their local hero, expressed their discontent by booing the Indian bowler.

</excerpt>

India pacer Mohammed Siraj has spoken about the controversy that followed his heated send-off to Australia batter Travis Head during Day 2 of the second Test at the Adelaide Oval. The fiery exchange, recorded on video and extensively shared on social media, took place after Siraj bowled out Head on Saturday. Head mentioned the incident during the post-day press conference, and Siraj gave his response before Day 3.

While speaking with former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, Siraj refuted Head’s assertions regarding sportsmanship. “I was relishing the challenge of bowling to him. It was an exciting competition since he was batting exceptionally well. When a batter hits you for a six on a good delivery, it does sting. That fueled my determination. After dismissing him, I celebrated. Then he directed insults at me. You can witness it on television as well. Initially, it was my celebration; I didn’t utter a word to him. In the press conference, he made an untruthful statement. He lied. There’s no way he said well-bowled. We regard everyone. I consistently show respect to all since cricket is a gentleman’s sport. Travis Head’s conduct was inappropriate. I felt disheartened,” Siraj conveyed.

Harbhajan also shared his thoughts on his own encounters with similar situations while playing in Australia.

The situation escalated when Siraj bowled Head with a full delivery right after allowing a six, sending him back to the dressing room with a celebratory gesture. In reaction, Head turned around and responded. Later, Head acknowledged that his reaction might have been too much but still supported his actions.

“I actually jokingly remarked ‘well bowled,’ then he gestured at me in the sheds, and I also reacted. I don’t wish to dwell on it too much. It likely escalated a bit too far, and that’s why I’m let down by my response. However, I also intend to defend myself,” Head remarked.

</excerpt>

Australia’s Travis Head has addressed his fiery exchange with India pacer Mohammed Siraj during the second day of the pink-ball Test on December 7. Head, who delivered a stellar performance with a blazing 140 off 141 balls, revealed that his compliment to Siraj was misunderstood, leading to the on-field altercation.

Head, scoring his third Test century in Adelaide, was eventually dismissed by Siraj, who gave him an animated send-off. In response, Head lashed out at the bowler as he walked back to the pavilion. Speaking to the broadcasters post-match, Head explained that he had praised Siraj’s bowling, but the Indian pacer seemingly misinterpreted the remark.

“I said ‘well bowled,’ but he thought otherwise. When he pointed me to the shed, he got a little bite back from me. Slightly disappointed with how it transpired. It is what it is. If they want to act like that and that’s how they’re going to represent themselves, then so be it,” Head remarked.

The incident led to boos from the Adelaide crowd directed at Siraj. Despite the controversy, Head had a touching moment off the field, dedicating his century to his newborn son. “We have a newborn boy a couple of weeks ago. I would have got some stick from my wife if I didn’t do that when Harrison was born,” he joked.

Reflecting on his innings, Head acknowledged that he took risks and made the most of his opportunities. “I took my chances here and there. Sometimes it was tough to get a bat on. At certain stages, they were bowling really well. Nice to take my luck and put the guys in a good position,” he said.

At stumps on Day 2, Australia held a 29-run lead, with India struggling in their second innings at five wickets down, leaving the hosts in a commanding position.

India maintained their strong position on Day 3 of the first Test in Perth against Australia, thanks to brilliant performances from Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. Kohli’s century and Bumrah’s key wickets put India firmly in control as they sought to extend their lead.

Bumrah Strikes Late to Leave Australia Reeling

Jasprit Bumrah made a significant impact late on Day 3, taking two crucial wickets. He dismissed Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne, reducing Australia to 12/3 in their chase of 534 runs. Moreover, Mohammed Siraj removed Pat Cummins, further strengthening India’s grip on the match.

Kohli’s Century and India’s Declaration

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli returned to form in style, scoring his 30th Test century off 143 balls. With his century in the bag, India declared their second innings at 487/6, giving Australia a daunting target of 534 runs. Kohli’s knock included eight fours and two sixes, and it set the stage for India to take charge of the game.

Jaiswal Shines Before Dismissal

Earlier in the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal impressed with a knock of 161, after bringing up his 150 post-lunch. His performance helped India extend their lead to 405 runs. Alongside KL Rahul, who scored 77, Jaiswal formed a vital partnership. Rahul’s consistency in overseas conditions continues to be a highlight for India, and he will look to build on his strong start in the remaining matches.

India’s Comprehensive Lead and Australia’s Struggles

India’s first innings was a complete team effort, posting 150 runs and bowling Australia out for just 104. The pitch conditions favored seam bowling, and India capitalized on them, putting themselves in a commanding position in the series opener. Australia’s top order, however, struggled to handle the pressure from India’s bowlers.

Australia’s Tough Task Ahead

Looking ahead, Australia faces a tough challenge. With three wickets down and a large target in front of them, they will need a strong recovery. The pitch conditions are expected to worsen, making it difficult for their batters to make a comeback. Pat Cummins and his team will need a patient and resilient performance to get back into the game.

India’s Plan for Day 4

India’s strategy on Day 4 will be to build their lead further while minimizing risks. With a substantial lead in hand, they will aim to add runs quickly but carefully. Meanwhile, Bumrah and Siraj will look to exploit any cracks in the pitch and dismiss Australia’s remaining top order. India will be focused on dismissing Australia as soon as possible and pushing for victory in the first Test. Till the last reports, India needs 5 more wickets to win first test. Australia were at 93/5.

Key Highlights from Day 3

Bumrah’s two wickets leave Australia at 12/3, needing 522 more runs to win.

Kohli scores his 30th Test century, and India declares at 487/6, setting Australia a target of 534.

Yashasvi Jaiswal knock of 161, contributing to India’s commanding position.

Rahul scores 77, and the opening partnership with Jaiswal accumulates 201 runs.

Quick fire 38 from N.K. Reddy in 27 balls strengthening India’s lead to 533.

On the same day, Siraj was also included in India’s 15-member squad for the Test series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin from October 16. He will be among three pacers who will take the field along with Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah, who has been also named vice-captain of the side.

Siraj shot to the fore of the cricket scene after he played a telling role for India in India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 win over Australia. He was in the fray when he made his debut in a Test during that series when several senior cricketers were rested from the side due to injuries.

He should also be in the fray when the side, under Rohit Sharma, travels to Australia for five Tests later this year. Based on inputs, Rohit might miss one of the first two Tests as he has to attend a family function and, in case that happens, Bumrah is likely to be the stand-in skipper.

India’s Squad for the Three Tests Against New Zealand:

Captain: Rohit Sharma

Vice-Captain: Jasprit Bumrah

Players: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (Wicketkeeper), Dhruv Jurel (Wicketkeeper), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep

Traveling Reserves: Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mayank Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.

“Indian cricketer Mohammed Siraj has been appointed as Telangana’s DSP, honoring his cricket achievements and dedication to the state. He will continue his cricket career while inspiring many with his new role.”

Having made his Test debut during India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia, Siraj has become a regular in the longest format of the game. He played a crucial role in India’s series victory over Australia last time, notably taking five wickets in the final Test in Brisbane.

In the recent home series against Bangladesh, he performed well, claiming four wickets in two matches at an average of 34.50. Siraj’s next challenge will be the three-Test series against New Zealand, starting October 16 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Maharaj helped the Proteas become just the fifth side to win a five-match ODI series after losing the first two games against the ‘Baggy Greens’.

India’s pace sensation Mohammed Siraj has capped off a superb 12 months by claiming the No 1 spot on the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings for bowlers from New Zealand seamer Trent Boult. It has been a meteoric rise for Siraj, who only returned to India’s ODI setup in February last year following a three-year hiatus without playing a 50-over match at the international level.

Since then Siraj has scalped 37 wickets from 20 matches to be one of India’s most consistent fast bowlers and the accolades have started to pile in for the underrated 28-year-old. On Tuesday, Siraj was named in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year while Wednesday brought in more joy for the pacer as he went past Boult and Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood to become the topranked ODI bowler for the very first time.

Not only has Siraj’s form over the last 12 months been imperious, but his efforts in the ODI series at home earlier this month against Sri Lanka and New Zealand have shown how much the right-arm pacer has improved in recent times. India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey challenged Siraj to work on specific aspects of his game in the middle of last year and the extra training that the energetic quick has put in has paid off in spades judged on recent performances.

Siraj took nine wickets against Sri Lanka to be the leading wicket-taker for the threegame series and backed that up by claiming a four-wicket haul in the opening match of the recently-completed series against New Zealand. Siraj has been India’s go-to bowler in the first 10 overs of the initial powerplay, though he has found success at every phase of the game.

Often, he has provided team India with good starts by taking early wickets, which was increasingly evident in recent ODI outings against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. In 2022, he was India’s highest wicket-taker in ODIs, having taken 24 scalps in 15 matches at an average of 23.50 and an economy rate of 4.62. His best bowling figures last year were 3-29. In five matches this year, he has become the world’s leading wicket-taker in ODIs.

He has taken 14 wickets at an average of 10.57 and an economy rate of 3.82. His best bowling figures this year are 4-32. With his superb exploits, Siraj jumps to the top of the ODI bowler rankings with 729 rating points, albeit narrowly, with his lead at the top over Hazlewood just two rating points higher than the Australian.

On Monday, Siraj returned with figures of 5/73 in just his third Test as India bundled out Australia for 294 in their second innings in the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Along with Siraj, Shardul Thakur also picked four wickets in Australia’s second essay with the bat.

India, then during their chase of 328, reached 4/0 before rain forced early stumps on Day Four of the match. They will need to score 324 more runs on Tuesday to win the match and clinch the four-match series.

“The boy has become a man on this tour. Siraj, leader of the attack in his first Test series and he has led from the front. The way newcomers have performed for India on this tour will be etched in memories for a long, long time. Will be fitting if they retain the trophy,” Sehwag said in a tweet.

India will need 324 runs more, with all their wickets intact, when they come out to bat on Tuesday to win the fourth and final Test against Australia at The Gabba.

India reached 4/0 in their chase on 328 in the extended final session on Monday before rain started pouring in and umpires were forced to call for early Stumps. Only 1.5 overs could be bowled in India’s second innings on Day Four as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 4 and 0 respectively.

The weather forecast for the final day isn’t great and Australia will be praying that rain gods stay away so that they can win the Brisbane Test and win the Border-Gavaskar series, a trophy which they lost in India’s last tour of 2018-19. On the other hand, a draw in the game would be sufficient for India to retain the coveted trophy.

The highest successful chase at Gabba ame in 1951, when Australia finished 236/7, but the Tim Paine led-side have fresher memories of how India incredibly salvaged a draw last week in Sydney.

Earlier, India bowled out Australia for 294 in their second innings, after resuming the day on 21/0.

Steve Smith was the top scorer for Australia in their second essay as he scored 55 runs off 74 deliveries, with the help of seven boundaries. David Warner, Marcus Harris and Cameron Green also made notable contributions of 48, 38 and 37. Pat Cummins and skipper Tim Paine also made scores of 28 and 27.

For India, right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Siraj picked up his maiden five-wicket haul, conceding 73 runs in 19.5 overs. Shardul Thakur also picked four wickets for 61 while debutant off-spinner Washington Sundar scalped one.

India had posted 336 in reply to Australia’s first inning score of 369, thus conceding a 33-run lead.

The four-match series is tied at 1-1 with Australia winning the first Test in Adelaide and India winning the second in Melbourne. The third Test in Sydney had ended in a draw.

Brief scores: Australia 369 and 294 (Steve Smith 55, David Warner 48; Mohammed Siraj 5/73) vs India 336 and 4/0 at Stumps on Day Four (Rohit Sharma 4*, Shubman Gill 0*; Mitchell Starc 0/4)

NEW DELHI: India’s biggest take away from the second Test apart from the series-equalling win was the ability of debutants Shubman Gill (45 and 32 not out) and Mohammed Siraj (2/40 and 3/37) to step in and perform with self-assurance. Although they didn’t get the big numbers, the two did enough damage to Australia and helped India win.

Before the start of the second Test, India were facing a conundrum at the top of the order. With Rohit Sharma in quarantine after arriving in Australia late due to his rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, and Prithvi Shaw failing in both innings of the first Test, India had to throw in young Gill at the deep end. And though the opener survived some tense moments, he did not budge from playing his shots.

On a tense Saturday evening, the first day of the first Test, 21-year-old Gill survived a chance on four when Marnus Labuschagne dropped him in third slip off the bowling of Pat Cummins. The very next ball from Mitchell Starc was dispatched to the fence as the batsman got on top of the bounce and punched it through cover.

Soon, Gill was moving down the track to Nathan Lyon and hitting a four.

On the second morning, too, he was dropped, in the second over of the day, this time of Josh Hazlewood. But the very next ball was again dispatched to the fence on the leg-side.

Even in the second innings, when India chased a small total, facing the ghosts of 36 in the second innings of the first Test, Gill went about playing his shots even as Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara were dismissed early. The Aussies had no answer.

“I thought he looked very, very mature for someone playing his first Test match. He looked calm and composed and wasn’t afraid to play his shots, which was great to see.

Even in the second innings, where it was very easy to get into a shell, Gill went out there and played his natural game which was great from the team point of view,” said India coach Ravi Shastri.

Pacer Siraj too remained unnerved despite the departure of Umesh Yadav during Australia’s second innings on the third day. He kept a tight line and became the first Indian in seven years to pick five wickets in a Test match when he got Nathan Lyon on the fourth day. Siraj’s other wickets were extremely important—he removed Cameron Green twice, Marnus Labuschagne, and Travis Head once each.

The young fast bowler was also prowling for the ball on the field, trying not to leak runs. By Siraj’s own admission he just kept straight and accurate lines, curtailing the flow of runs and not trying anything fancy. “I focus on the basics consistently. I don’t try much,” said Siraj while crediting domestic cricket and Indian Premier League (IPL) for patience and confidence.

India skipper Ajinkya Rahane on Tuesday too credited domestic cricket and other non-Test first-class experience as the reason behind Siraj’s ability to bowl with discipline. “It’s really difficult for debutants to bowl with discipline but that’s where I think the first-class experience comes in handy. Even India A level, that helps a lot; the way Siraj bowled was magnificent. [In his] first Test match, bowling with the same discipline and patience was very good to see. Credit to both of them [Siraj and Gill] for showing character and attitude,” said Rahane after the match.

Shastri also praised Siraj, saying: “He might not have the numbers to show but the discipline and ability to bowl long spells, maturity he showed for someone playing his first Test match and doing the job he had to do once we lost Umesh was outstanding.”

Shastri credited IPL for the ability of Indian youngsters like Gill and Siraj to step onto the field without even a hint of nerve. “I think a lot has to do with the IPL. The fact that they share the dressing room with international players, they rub shoulders with the best. That complex factor disappears very quickly. You see what you see now,” said Shastri, when asked about the maturity the youngsters have shown.

Melbourne: The India pace bowlers’ focus was to bowl dot balls and maiden overs and complement the spinners, said Mohammed Siraj after Umesh Yadav limped off the field early in Australia’s second innings depleting the team’s bowling on the third day of the second Test. “We were discussing in the team, with Jassi bhai too. We are two fast bowlers, the spinners are doing a good job. Our (the two fast bowlers’) focus was to bowl dot balls and maidens. The wicket also didn’t offer much help. So we were focusing on bowling the dot balls,” said Siraj after the end of the third day’s play. The 26-year-old bowler is making his Test debut.
