</excerpt>

The Calcutta high court directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay ₹4 lakh each month to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and daughter.

Court Breaks Down Monthly Maintenance Allocation

A division bench of Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee passed the directive on a petition filed by Hasin Jahan and ordered Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami to pay ₹1.5 lakh to her wife and ₹2.5 lakh to her daughter monthly.

“In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs. 1,50,000/- per month to the petitioner no.1(wife) and Rs. 2,50,000/- to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners…” the court said in its order on July 1.

Mohammed Shami Free to Pay More for Daughter’s Education

The court further added that Shami is also not bound from voluntarily paying educational or other costs in addition to what has been mentioned for her daughter.

Jahan had moved the high court against an order of a district sessions court to Shami in 2023 to pay ₹50,000 to her wife and ₹80,000 to her daughter.

Jahan Sought ₹10 Lakh Total Compensation

She had claimed a compensation of ₹7 lakh per month for herself and ₹3 lakh for her daughter before the court.

Jahan was a model and cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders prior to marriage with Shami in 2014. The couple had their daughter in 2015.

Allegations Against Mohammed Shami Sparked Major Controversy

In 2018, Jahan made allegations of domestic violence, dowry harassment and match-fixing against Shami. Jahan accused the pacer of having received money from a Pakistani lady. Jahan had also accused her husband for stopping payment to her to fund her family’s bills.

The complaint led BCCI to suspend the central contract of the pacer. The board went on to clear Shami from match-fixing charges after an inquiry.

Rachin Ravindra and Will Young provided a solid start for New Zealand, putting on 57 runs. India broke the partnership when Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Will Young.
</excerpt>

New Zealand got off to a good start against India in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Following captain Mitchell Santner’s decision to bat after winning the toss, Rachin Ravindra and Will Young formed a good opening stand.

In the seventh over, India’s Mohammed Shami had a chance to dismiss Rachin, but he dropped a catch off his own bowling. The ball, hit by Ravindra, went to Shami’s left hand, and despite an attempt to catch it, he failed. Shami signaled for the physio as he suffered a blow to his left hand, which started bleeding. After receiving treatment, he resumed bowling after five minutes.

This was not the first instance of Shami dropping a catch off his bowling in the Champions Trophy. He had dropped two catches against Australia in the semi-final a week ago.

Rachin Ravindra too received a second lease of life in the eighth over when he edged a Varun Chakravarthy ball. Shreyas Iyer, though, was unable to hold the catch in the deep. The partnership of Ravindra and Young then became the highest New Zealand opening stand in the 2025 Champions Trophy with 57 runs. Varun Chakravarthy ended the partnership, however, by getting Young out for 15 runs off 23 balls.

Earlier, New Zealand skipper Santner decided to bat first after winning the toss. Pacer Matt Henry was not fit to play and was replaced by Nathan Smith in the playing XI. India also kept the same XI that they had played in the semi-final against Australia.

India captain Rohit Sharma voiced that even though they lost the toss for the 12th time in a row in ODIs, they were optimistic about their own capability to adjust whether they batted or bowled first. “At the end of the day, what’s important is how well you want to play,” he asserted. “We’ve discussed not paying attention to the toss and playing well.”

Rohit Sharma lost his 12th consecutive toss.
</excerpt>

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami replicated his semi-final gaffe by dropping New Zealand batsman Rachin Ravindra off his bowling in the Champions Trophy 2025 final on Sunday. Rachin pushed the ball straight at Mohammed Shami in the 7th over, and the latter made a reflexive effort to catch it. But the ball escaped his hands, and Rachin got away with a single. The dropped catch left skipper Rohit Sharma visibly agitated.

Rachin opened quickly, making 28 from 20 balls before this respite. While adding to India’s worries, Shami needed medical treatment after this incident.

The blood was dripping from Shami’s hands, and the physio immediately got to work. After five minutes, the pacer resumed bowling for India. This is not the first time that Shami dropped a catch off his own bowling in the Champions Trophy. The pacer dropped two catches in the semi-final against Australia earlier this week.

DRS Saves Rachin; Another Drop by Iyer

Rachin’s luck continued moments after Shami’s missed catch. He was given out caught behind off Varun Chakravarthy’s bowling but successfully used DRS to overturn the decision. On the very next delivery, Rachin attempted a big shot, only to be dropped by Shreyas Iyer near the boundary rope.

Despite multiple lifelines, Rachin’s innings came to an end when Kuldeep Yadav dismissed him with his very first delivery.

Rohit Sharma Loses 12th Straight Toss, Equals Brian Lara’s Record

Earlier during the game, Rohit Sharma lost his 12th straight ODI toss, joining the unwanted record of West Indies legend Brian Lara. India, though, proceeded with an unchanged playing XI for the final.

While speaking at the toss, Rohit was still upbeat despite his continued unlucky toss moments. “We’ve played here enough, batted first and bowled first, don’t mind batting second really. It hasn’t altered much, we’ve chased and won as well. It certainly gives you a lot of confidence, takes the toss out of the game. At the end of the day, what does matter is how well you wish to play.”

“That’s what we’ve discussed in the dressing room, not to worry about the toss and just play well, that’s what we’ve done and we need to do today too. New Zealand have been an extremely good side for so many years, they do play good cricket in ICC events. We have to face the challenge to play well against them now. Same team for us,” he added.

</excerpt>

Congress leader Shama Mohamed has defended India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami after he was criticized for failing to observe ‘Roza’ (fast) during the sacred month of Ramzan while playing in the Champions Trophy.

Shami, who was spotted consuming an energy drink during India’s semi-final match against Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, was at the center of a religious controversy when All India Muslim Jamaat President Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi branded him as a “criminal” for not fasting.

Responding to the outcry, Shama Mohamed vigorously defended Shami, pointing out that Islam permits exemption from fasting on special occasions, including travel.

“…In Islam, there is a very important thing during Ramzan. When we are travelling, we don’t need to fast (Roza), so Mohammed Shami is travelling and he’s not at his own place. He’s playing a sport where he can be very thirsty. Nobody insists that when you’re playing a sport, you have to fast…It is your deeds which are very important. It (Islam) is a very scientific religion…,” Shama Mohamed said to ANI.

#WATCH | Delhi | On Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami, Congress leader Shama Mohamed says, “…In Islam, there is a very important thing during Ramzan.

Maulana Bareilvi Denounces Shami

Meanwhile, Maulana Bareilvi also denounced Shami, accusing him of breaking religious duties, as fasting is an obligatory duty for all healthy Muslims. “By not keeping ‘Roza’ he (Mohammed Shami) has committed a crime. He should not do this. In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal. He will have to answer God,” Maulana Bareilvi declared.

He also stated, “One of the compulsory duties is ‘Roza’ (fasting)…If any healthy man or woman doesn’t observe ‘Roza’, they will be a big criminal. A famous cricket personality of India, Mohammed Shami had water or some other beverage during a match.”

Religious Exemptions for Players

Islamic beliefs permit exemptions from fasting for individuals who are ill, on the move, or engaging in heavy physical exertion. Most players choose not to fast during matches to be at their best physically.

The controversy notwithstanding, Shami is keen on India’s Champions Trophy run, providing strong performances with the ball. The controversy rages on, but the pacer’s agenda remains helping India succeed in the tournament.

</excerpt>

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 India vs Australia semi-final saw a turning point when Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami dropped a sharp catch of Australian captain Steve Smith. The dropped catch invited scathing criticism from former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, who questioned the commitment of Shami in going for the catch.

The incident occurred in the fourth ball of the 22nd over when Smith, who was playing at 36 along with Marnus Labuschagne, was intent on reconstructing Australia’s innings. The dropped catch helped Smith go on with his innings and eventually achieve a well-built half-century.

Gavaskar Criticizes Shami for Lack of Conviction

While ex-Pakistan captain and broadcaster Ramiz Raja conceded that the catch was tough, he pointed to the pace and power with which the ball approached Shami. Unlike him, Gavaskar was rather damning, suggesting Shami wasn’t convinced about the attempt.

This is what they said during commentary:

Ramiz Raja: “A difficult chance, this was hit hard. Travis Head’s was a scoop, this came from the middle of the blade. Hardly had any time to react. It hit him on the wrist I think.”

pic.twitter.com/c4zBOxkVmI

Sunil Gavaskar: “There seem to be no conviction going for that. He is just putting his hand up in hope, you can see that, the way the hand is positioned, not looking to actually catch it. No conviction in the attempt. No wonder it was dropped.”

Shami looked irritated after losing control of the ball. The opportunity went awry as Smith went on to register a half-century, establishing solidity in Australia’s innings.

Australia Steady After Early Wickets

Although he lost Labuschagne to Ravindra Jadeja for 29 in the next over from 36 balls, Smith continued his performance well. His fifty came in the 26th over in 68 deliveries. Australia, in the same match, won the toss and decided to play first at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

</excerpt>

Rohit Sharma is fit and will likely play in India’s final group-stage match against New Zealand on March 2 in Dubai. However, the team is expected to make a few changes. According to reports, Mohammed Shami will be rested, and Arshdeep Singh is set to replace him.

Shami showed discomfort during his first spell against Pakistan on February 23. Although he recovered after receiving treatment on his right leg, the team management does not want to take any risks before the semi-final on March 4. Therefore, they have decided to give him a break.

Arshdeep Singh Set to Replace Shami

Since New Zealand has five left-handed batters, India wants to introduce a different angle in their bowling attack. As a result, Arshdeep’s ability to swing the ball into left-handers makes him the preferred choice.

During Friday’s practice, Arshdeep bowled 13 overs at full intensity under bowling coach Morne Morkel’s supervision. Meanwhile, Shami bowled only 6-7 overs with a shortened run-up. Notably, he was not bowling at full pace, which suggests that the team is managing his workload carefully.

Team Considers Bowling Changes

While KL Rahul remained uncertain about making changes to the winning combination, assistant coach Ryan Doeschate later hinted at possible adjustments in the bowling lineup.

“We’ve had two pretty tough training sessions, so that’s been the preparation,” Doeschate said. “In terms of the bench strength, I think the priority is making sure that we have our best guys available and fully fit for the second game [the semi-final on March 4].

“But we also don’t want to rest them for another two days [India have had a week off]. So to get that balance right, we might just try to share the bowling out a little bit. But we obviously want to win against New Zealand as well. Mohammed Shami’s brilliant catch went unrecognized as KL Rahul won India’s fielding medal. In a lighthearted moment, Shami joked, “Mera bhi catch achha tha yaar,” adding humor to the intense competition for India’s best fielder.
</excerpt>

Despite India’s comprehensive performance in the Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh, fielding remained a facet where the team could have improved. Several missed chances, including dropped catches and missed stumpings, permitted Bangladesh to recover from a vulnerable position.

Rohit Sharma let a simple catch of Jaker Ali slip at first slip, preventing Axar Patel from securing a possible hat-trick. Shortly after, Hardik Pandya overlooked another straightforward opportunity of Towhid Hridoy at mid-off. This proved to be expensive as Hridoy and Jaker proceeded to contribute 187 runs, aiding Bangladesh in reaching a competitive score of 229 from 35 overs.

Bright Spots in India’s Fielding

Despite the fielding lapses, some Indian players made notable contributions. Virat Kohli took a well-judged catch in the deep to dismiss Jaker Ali and another to send back Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. KL Rahul redeemed himself by taking a sharp catch to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim for a golden duck. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami, who led the bowling attack with a five-wicket haul, also completed a challenging catch for India’s final wicket.

Shami’s Disappointment as Rahul Wins Fielding Medal

When the time came for the announcement of India’s fielding medal, Mohammed Shami found himself overlooked. In a lighthearted moment captured in a BCCI video, Shami joked, “Look at our fielding coach; he looks very busy. I know who’s winning it. Catch toh mera bhi achha tha yaar (Well, the catch I took was good too).”

Nominees for the Fielding Award

Fielding coach T. Dilip began announcing the nominations, first praising Virat Kohli for his reliable fielding skills.

“Coming to the nominations, I think someone who’s been really sure, that he does what he does all the time – going into his positions, grabbing every opportunity when it comes his way – none other than Virat Kohli,” he said.

KL Rahul and Shubman Gill also made it to the contenders’ list. “I think he has been very consistent behind the stumps; it’s never easy because with the new ball, diving on the left side, not only this game, he’s been really doing well, taking those catches at important junctures of time – KL Rahul.”

Dilip then added Shubman Gill’s name. “We always talk about catches, and with Shami bowling a brilliant spell, the ball went away and was heading towards his right side, Shubman Gill – fantastic effort.”

Rahul Takes Home the Fielding Medal

Dilip handed over the proceedings to India’s fielding maestro, Ravindra Jadeja, who then led the team outside the dressing room. As the big screen displayed the winner’s name, KL Rahul was announced as the recipient of the fielding medal. The entire squad burst into laughter, reminiscent of the camaraderie seen during the 2023 World Cup.

While Shami’s catch was impressive, Rahul’s overall consistency behind the stumps earned him the recognition, keeping the competition for India’s best fielder as fierce as ever.

</excerpt>

India kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a resounding 6-wicket win against Bangladesh in Dubai. Mohammed Shami’s stellar five-wicket haul restricted Bangladesh to 228, before Shubman Gill’s unbeaten century ensured an easy chase for the Men in Blue.

Shami, Rana Wreck Bangladesh Batting Line-up

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh suffered an early collapse, losing three wickets in the first two overs. Mohammed Shami (5/53) and debutant Harshit Rana (3/31) dismantled the top order, reducing Bangladesh to 35/5. However, Towhid Hridoy fought back with a well-compiled 100 off 118 balls, partnering with Jaker Ali (68) for a crucial 154-run stand. Their efforts helped Bangladesh reach 228 before being bowled out in the final over.

Shami, the standout bowler, secured his sixth five-wicket haul in ODIs and completed 200 wickets in the format, becoming the seventh Indian to achieve this milestone.

Shubman Gill’s Unbeaten Century Seals Victory

Chasing 229, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma (41 off 36) provided a strong start before falling to Taskin Ahmed. Shubman Gill (101*) anchored the innings, building partnerships with Virat Kohli (22) and Shreyas Iyer (15). Despite losing wickets, Gill remained composed, reaching his century off 125 balls. KL Rahul (41*) finished the chase in style, hitting a six to secure victory.

For Bangladesh, Rishad Hossain (2/38) was the standout bowler, but their total proved insufficient against a dominant Indian batting display. Shubman Gill was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten knock.

</excerpt>

Following a 15-month break, Mohammed Shami is slated to start in the first T20I against England on January 22 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Last seen for India in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final against Australia, where he became the leading wicket-taker before tearing his Achilles, the 34-year-old played there. Surgery on this damage kept him out for many months and made him miss the T20 World Cup victory of India. Though he was meant to come back during India’s Test season, knee issues pushed off his return. Still, he showed his ability by playing in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy; he is now member of India’s 2025 Champions Trophy team.

Reflecting on his return, Shami said his fervor for representing the nation has driven his tenacity. He admitted his time with the national squad is restricted and passionately wanted to maximize his professional prospects before retirement.

“One should never stop playing for the country.” At a gathering organized by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Shami said, “If you love her, you will always fight back; even if you are injured ten times.”

He added, “No matter how much I play cricket, it is less for me since once I have quit, perhaps it will not happen again.”— my habit always remains in just the mind.

One of India’s all-time great fast bowlers, Shami has 229 Test and 195 ODI wickets. His next game will be his first in India’s T20I team.

</excerpt>

Ready to make his long-expected comeback to the Indian cricket team is star pacer Mohammad Shami. Last playing for India on November 19, 2023, the 34-year-old led wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup 2023. Although an ankle injury kept Shami out for the whole of 2024, he effectively announced his return to Bengal domestic cricket in November 2024. His remarkable return got him a place in the T20I squad of India for the five-match series against England to follow.

Showing encouraging signs of form, Shami attended Eden Gardens India’s first practice session on Sunday, January 19 and bowled at full pace for more than an hour. A PTI article, however, observed that at one point the experienced fast bowler seemed a bit uneasy and hobbled toward the changing room. Shami returned to the field soon after, chatting with his Bengal teammates and handling his severely strapped left leg.

Bene Morne Morkel, bowling coach, Shami started the session with gentle warm-ups and brief strides before bowling continuously for about twenty minutes under close observation. Later, he took part in fielding exercises checking his knee. Notwithstanding first misgivings, Shami revealed

According to the report, Shami’s return hinges on final clearance from the BCCI and the National Cricket Academy (NCA). However, it is believed that the pacer is nearing full fitness and ready to make his international comeback.

The NCA’s medical team has been closely monitoring Shami’s rehabilitation, ensuring he adhered to a detailed recovery program. After undergoing heel surgery, Shami made steady progress but faced a brief setback due to knee swelling, which ruled him out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Despite this, his recent appearances in domestic cricket, particularly for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, have demonstrated promising signs.

Shami is expected to feature in the pre-quarterfinal against Haryana in Baroda, where Indian selectors will likely observe his performance to evaluate his readiness for the England series. Early impressions from his domestic games suggest that Shami has been bowling comfortably, with no visible signs of discomfort from his injury.

The BCCI has been keeping a close watch on Shami, with NCA physiotherapists accompanying him to domestic matches, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in Rajkot and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Hyderabad. These measures indicate the board’s cautious approach to his return.

The report further states that there is optimism about Shami’s availability, with selectors expected to make a final decision after assessing his performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy knockouts. If cleared, he is likely to be included in the Indian squad for the England series and could be a key player in the Champions Trophy.

Akash Deep Likely to Miss England Series

Meanwhile, pacer Akash Deep, who was part of the Indian squad during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is unlikely to participate in the upcoming England ODIs. Akash Deep missed the fifth Test at the SCG due to back pain and is expected to be sidelined for at least a month.

The pacer will report to the NCA’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for further rehabilitation after returning to India.

Shami, who has been training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, confirmed his participation in the Vijay Hazare one-day tournament. This development comes as a surprise since it was initially expected that Shami would be heading to Australia to play in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for Team India. However, as of now, Shami’s inclusion in the national side appears unlikely.

Coached by Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Bengal is set to kick off their campaign against Delhi in Hyderabad on Saturday, December 21. The team is scheduled to depart from Kolkata for Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Shami has already represented Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this season. Shami is waiting for approval from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) concerning his fitness, after which he will travel to Australia to join the squad.

Even though Shami was not part of the initial team for the five-match series, he has been actively participating in domestic cricket, playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, in a bid to regain match fitness.

“Shami’s India kit has already been sent to Australia. He will finish his Mushtaq Ali Trophy responsibilities and then depart,” a source told news agency PTI.

Shami last appeared for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final before being sidelined due to an ankle injury, for which he subsequently underwent surgery.

Currently involved in SMAT 2024, Shami will meet with the NCA medical staff in Bengaluru once Bengal’s campaign wraps up. NCA’s Dr. Nitin Patel and Strength and Conditioning coach Nishant Bordoloi will evaluate his fitness.

Shukla also mentioned that Shami had lost six kilograms and played seven T20 matches in 13 days, indicating his preparedness. “Shami himself wanted to engage in a significant amount of domestic cricket and inform NCA about how his body responds,” Shukla stated.

Star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, who recently took seven wickets in his comeback Ranji Trophy match for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh after nearly a year-long injury layoff, is not expected to join the Indian Test squad in Australia anytime soon. According to a Times of India report on November 27, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) currently has no plans to send Shami for the remaining four matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Shami, currently representing Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, has impressed with four wickets in two matches. He recorded figures of 1/46 against Punjab in the tournament opener and followed up with a 3/21 performance against Hyderabad on November 25 in Rajkot.

Despite his form, the BCCI seems satisfied with the performance of the pacers already part of the five-match Test series squad. A BCCI source confirmed, “There has been no conversation around trying to send Shami to Australia, at least for now. At the moment, the fast bowlers chosen for the tour and the first XI in the opening Test at Perth are doing their job very well.”

In the first Test, which India won by 295 runs in Perth on November 25, Indian pacers led by stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah claimed 18 wickets. Bumrah secured eight dismissals (5+3), Mohammed Siraj picked up five (2+3), while debutant Harshit Rana took four wickets across both innings. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and squad members Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna also remain options for India.

Reports suggest that Shami will travel to Australia alongside Indian captain Rohit Sharma in the coming days.

The 34-year-old was initially excluded from India’s 18-member squad for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, commencing on November 22 in Perth. However, Shami demonstrated his fitness in a Ranji Trophy 2024-25 Elite Group C match, bowling over 40 overs for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh in Indore. His impressive performance has reportedly earned him a spot in India’s Test squad.

According to Dainik Bhaskar, Shami will fly to Australia with skipper Rohit and is expected to join the team ahead of the series opener at Optus Stadium. A decision regarding his inclusion in the playing XI will be made closer to the first Test.

Shami, who took 24 wickets in seven matches during the ODI World Cup 2023, last represented India in the World Cup final against Australia. Concerns over his fitness initially kept him out of the Test squad, but his successful return has dispelled any doubts, clearing the way for his comeback.

Shami’s addition is expected to bolster India’s pace attack, which currently includes Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana. While Bumrah and Siraj have experience playing in Australia, Akash Deep has only five Test appearances since his debut in February 2024. Krishna has featured in just two Tests, and Harshit, though part of India’s limited-overs squads before, is yet to make his international debut.

Shami, who suffered an ankle injury after last year’s ODI World Cup Final, is all set to return as his state team Bengal is to take on Madhya Pradesh in the on-going Ranji Trophy.

The primary wicket-taker of ODI World Cup, Shami, underwent ankle surgery barely weeks after World Cup. He had targeted to return well in time for New Zealand Test series, but a knee injury that he had suffered picked up during his rehab period and lengthened his recovery.

The Cricket Association of Bengal said inclusion of Shami in the Bengal team would not only be a huge boost but also raise the morale of the whole team and try and reach the next round of the Ranji Trophy.

At present, Bengal occupies the fifth position on the points table with 8 points from 4 matches. They have just gained 3 against Karnataka and are now facing Madhya Pradesh on the fifth round of the tournament at the latter’s home on Wednesday, November 13.

In October, Shami had been posting regular updates about his recovery, mentioning his readiness to return to full-speed bowling. “I am very happy with the way I bowled yesterday. I was bowling from half run-up before that to avoid too much load. But yesterday I decided to go full tilt and I bowled at 100 percent,” Shami said while interacting with the reporters during the Bengaluru Test match against New Zealand. “The result was good. I am 100 percent pain-free.”

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma had already spoken about Shami’s frequent knee issues but had brushed away reports in the media which said that he was still struggling with it, just ahead of his exclusion from the New Zealand series.

It has been 11 months since his last competitive game.

There were hopes that he would return when India play New Zealand and, in fact, Rohit Sharma had confirmed that Shami had taken a step back from his rehabilitation as there was swelling in his knee, and he will not feature in the squad.

Rohit said, “Honestly speaking, it is tough to make a decision on him for the Australian series. He had a setback and swelling in his knees. That put him back a little bit and had to start again. He’s at the NCA with doctors and physios.” He further added, “We want to give him enough time to recover and be 100% fit. The physios, the trainers, and the doctors have set a roadmap for him. He is supposed to play a couple of (practice) games before he plays international cricket.”

Shami’s participation in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024 remains uncertain. He continues to stay at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further rehabilitation.
Team India is preparing for the second Test against New Zealand, starting from October 24 in Pune and the last Test on November 1 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Test captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed that Shami is suffering from swelling in his knees and will be available only subject to his availability for the tour of Australia.

Actually, it’s tough to make a call on him for the Australia series. He had a setback and swelling in his knees. That put him back a little bit, and he has to restart his recovery process. He’s at the NCA with doctors and physios,” said Rohit.

He further said, “We want him to be 100% fit. We don’t want to bring an undercooked Shami to Australia; it wouldn’t be the right decision. For a fast bowler, missing such a lot of cricket and then coming back is tough, and we don’t want to rush him.”

Rohit confirmed that the medical team had prepared a rehabilitation plan for Shami. “He is supposed to play a few practice matches before he makes the international comeback, said he.

The last time Shami played was during the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he played despite an ankle injury on which he resorted to injections. The two key tournaments he missed were the South Africa tour and IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup.

With Shami out of the team, Akash Deep made his Test debut and stepped into big shoes alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the pace attack.

</excerpt>

India’s Test and ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, delivered some disappointing news regarding pacer Mohammed Shami during a media briefing on Tuesday in Bengaluru. When asked about Shami’s rehabilitation status ahead of the first Test against New Zealand, Rohit indicated that Shami is unlikely to accompany the team to Australia for the upcoming five-match Border-Gavaskar Test series.

Shami has been sidelined since the 2023 ODI World Cup and has faced several setbacks in his recovery. Despite previous expectations for his return, he has encountered multiple roadblocks that have delayed his comeback.

Rohit’s Candid Assessment

Addressing reporters, Rohit expressed his reluctance to include Shami in the Australian tour even if he regains fitness. The captain emphasized that the pacer remains “undercooked” due to his prolonged absence from competitive cricket.

“To be honest, it is difficult to make a call on him for the Australia series. He had a setback and swelling in his knees, which set him back a little. He is currently at the NCA with doctors and physios. We don’t want to bring an undercooked Shami to Australia. We are keeping our fingers crossed,” Rohit stated.

Shami Responds to Rumors

In response to the speculation surrounding his fitness, Shami took to social media to clarify the situation. He refuted reports claiming he would be missing out on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, asserting that he is diligently working towards recovery.

“Why these types of baseless rumors? I’m working hard and trying my level best to recover. Neither the BCCI nor I have mentioned that I am out of the Border-Gavaskar series. I request the public to stop paying attention to such news from unofficial sources. Please stop spreading fake news, especially without my statement,” Shami posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Future Prospects Remain Open

While Rohit has indicated that Shami’s chances of playing in Australia are slim, he has not completely ruled out the fast bowler’s potential inclusion in the series. As the team prepares for its upcoming matches, all eyes will be on Shami’s recovery progress in the days to come.

</excerpt>

Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami has come under fire from the Pakistan cricket community following his recent comments about former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq. Shami’s remarks were in response to allegations made by Inzamam, who had accused Indian bowlers of ball tampering during recent ICC events.

Inzamam, during the 2024 T20 World Cup, suggested that India may have used a modified ball with an embedded chip to enhance swing. He specifically targeted Arshdeep Singh, claiming the left-arm fast bowler managed to reverse swing the ball unusually early in their match against Australia.

Shami’s reaction to these claims was dismissive, labeling Inzamam’s statements as “cartoonish.” This choice of words has drawn sharp criticism from Pakistan’s cricket fraternity. Former Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt and Basit Ali have expressed their discontent with Shami’s language, arguing that it was disrespectful towards a figure of Inzamam’s stature.

Basit Ali, in particular, criticized Shami for his lack of respect towards Inzamam, emphasizing that such remarks are unbecoming of a professional cricketer. “When Shami refers to Inzi bhai as a cartoon, it’s not right. Inzamam has led his country with distinction. Shami, your choice of words was poor and hurtful,” Basit stated. He advised Shami to be more respectful towards senior players and to communicate his disagreements more thoughtfully.

Basit further expressed disappointment, describing Shami’s comments as “behuda” (indecent), and urged him to be more careful with his language. “You need to be more cautious with your words. Your elders likely taught you to speak with respect. Such language is inappropriate,” Basit added.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions and sensitivities in cricketing interactions between India and Pakistan, reflecting the broader context of their sportsmanship and competitive dynamics.

</excerpt>

Veteran Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has addressed and dismissed rumors regarding his supposed marriage to Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza. These rumors began circulating on social media following Sania’s divorce from former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik.

In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube show ‘Unplugged,’ Mohammed Shami not only refuted the rumors but also criticized those spreading fake news. He emphasized the importance of responsible meme creation, pointing out that while memes are often made for humor and entertainment, they should not hurt others’ sentiments.

“It’s weird and done purposely for some lame fun. But what can be done? If I open my phone, I see those memes. I think that memes are made for fun, but if they are related to someone’s life, then you must think about it before sharing. These people share from unverified pages and get away by saying anything and everything,” Shami remarked.

Mohammed Shami further stated that he would respond accordingly if such memes were shared from verified accounts. “But I would like to say one thing – if you have the guts to say all these things from a verified page, then I will reply. Try achieving success, help people, and upgrade yourself, then I will believe that you are a good person.”

Shami on Kohli and Sharma’s T20I Retirements
Shami also commented on the recent retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20 Internationals, following India’s T20 World Cup win in Barbados last month.

Kohli was the first to announce his retirement from the format after earning the Player of the Match award for his 76 off 59 balls, which led India to a seven-run victory over South Africa in the final at Kensington Oval on June 29. Kohli ended his T20I career as the second-highest run-scorer with 4,188 runs in 125 matches, including one century and 38 fifties.

Shortly after, Rohit Sharma, the highest-ever run-scorer in T20Is with 4,231 runs in 159 matches, also announced his retirement during the post-game press conference. This was followed by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s retirement announcement.

“The retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20Is was a shock. They have been stalwarts for India, delivering outstanding performances and earning their titles as kings of white-ball cricket. Their simultaneous retirement is surprising, but it’s part of the natural cycle when one player leaves, another steps in. Replacing such stars will be a significant challenge,” Shami remarked.

These retirements mark the end of an era for Indian cricket, as the team looks to find new talent to fill the void left by these legendary players.

</excerpt>

As MS Dhoni continues to defy expectations, cricket fans remain puzzled by his decision to continue playing despite turning 43. The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman had hinted at a potential retirement after the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, especially after handing over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad before the season began.

Dhoni’s presence was expected to be a pivotal factor for CSK, particularly with the IPL finals and Qualifier 2 scheduled at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. However, CSK’s hopes were dashed when they lost their final league match to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 27 runs, missing out on the playoffs.

Despite the speculation, Dhoni has remained tight-lipped about his future, with no clear indications from his inner circle regarding his retirement plans. In light of this, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has shed light on Dhoni’s decision to keep playing.

Speaking on a YouTube podcast, Shami shared insights from a conversation he had with Dhoni regarding retirement. According to Shami, Dhoni believes that a player should retire either when they no longer enjoy the game or when they sense they are about to be dropped from the team.

Shami explained Dhoni’s perspective: “When asked about retirement, Mahi bhai mentioned that a player should retire when they lose interest in the game or when they feel they’re about to be removed from the team. He emphasized that enjoyment is key. If you no longer find joy in playing, it’s time to reconsider your future in the sport.”

Dhoni’s decision to continue playing, despite his age, is supported by his recent performances in the IPL. Although CSK did not advance to the playoffs, Dhoni’s contributions were significant, with crucial innings that had a major impact on the games.

As the cricketing world watches with bated breath, Dhoni’s commitment to the game and his ongoing performances suggest that he will continue to play by his own rules, enjoying every moment on the field.

</excerpt>

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reached out to the fast bowler Mohammed Shami, considering him as a potential candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The party is exploring the possibility of fielding Shami from the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal. While there is speculation surrounding Shami’s potential political debut, no official statement has been released on this matter.

According to reports, the BJP has initiated contact with Shami, expressing interest in having him contest from the Basirhat seat in Bengal. Currently represented by Nusrat Jahan of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), this constituency could see Shami, who plays domestic cricket for West Bengal, potentially influencing the Muslim vote bank in the region if he decides to enter politics.

The BJP recently unveiled its initial list of 195 candidates, with ongoing discussions for additional names. Shami’s inclusion might be considered in the second list. Additionally, there are rumors circulating about former Indian captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Sourav Ganguly also making a foray into politics.

Sources suggest that Ganguly might contest the Lok Sabha elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket. West Bengal, with 42 Lok Sabha seats, witnessed the TMC securing 22 seats in the 2019 elections, while the BJP won 18 seats, and the Congress secured two seats. Speculations abound that the Congress and TMC might form an alliance, known as the ‘India’ alliance, for the upcoming elections.

</excerpt>

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished India’s star speedster, Mohammed Shami, a fast recovery after undergoing an Achilles tendon surgery.
The right-arm pacer took to X on Monday to provide an update on his successful heel surgery on his achilles tendon.

PM Modi took to X to wish a quick recovery to the 33-year-old and wrote, “Wishing you a speedy recovery and good health, @MdShami11! I’m confident you’ll overcome this injury with the courage that is so integral to you.”

Earlier, Shami posted on X “Just had a successful heel operation on my achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet.”

Shami missed the home T20I series against Australia after the ICC World Cup last year, and he was also ruled out of the South Africa tour. He also missed the Afghanistan series and is not taking part in the current Test series against England.

The 33-year-old, who is not participating in the current five-match Test series against England, last played for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November. The senior pacer was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, dismissing 24 batters in just 7 matches.

Shami, who took 24 wickets in India’s astounding World Cup campaign, played in misery owing to landing issues, but he did not let it affect his performance.

According to the most recent information, he will not compete in the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This is a big blow to the franchise, since Shami led the Gujarat Titans’ pace assault. Shami made a key contribution to GT’s success over both seasons.

The 33-year-old bowler took 20 wickets in 2022 and improved his performance even more in IPL 2023, taking 28 wickets at an average of 18.64. Mohammed Shami was especially devastating with the new ball.

MS Dhoni, India’s skipper at the time, recognised the quality and talent Shami possessed. His words of praise for Shami at the post-match presentation are still vivid in the minds of the Indian fans.
“Shami was fantastic, he got the right length, and that was the reason he got nine wickets (in both innings). You need a bit of pace if you want to dominate, he has very good seam positioning, which means he can reverse away from the right-handers too. On a wicket that has more bounce, he can move the ball both ways,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.

MELBOURNE: India suffered another major blow after pace bowler Umesh Yadav was ruled out of the Test series against Australia and will return home for rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), it has been learnt. His exit comes after Mohammed Shami was ruled out following a fracture to his bowling arm in the first Test in Adelaide and had to return home ahead of the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Ishant Sharma, who is recuperating at the NCA, had not travelled to Australia at all. Umesh had limped off the field on the third day due to pain in his calf and did not return to take field. His exit now means that Jasprit Bumrah will be left with a rookie pace bowling attack, comprising Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini. Shardul Thakur, T. Natarajan and Kartik Tyagi are already there as net bowlers and two of the three will be named replacement for Shami and Umesh.
