Amit Shah’s leadership ensures smooth passage, weakening the opposition’s stance. This move reshapes political dynamics, benefiting the NDA and dividing opposition parties ahead of elections.
</excerpt>

The Prime Minister has once again showed his strength and assertiveness by taking a significant decision in the first year of his third term. Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonstrated his ability to take bold decisions in a coalition government, ensuring that allies were brought on board. His leadership signaled that he would continue making tough decisions in the future. A significant highlight of this strategy was the passing of the Waqf Bill in the Lok Sabha, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s pivotal role was evident. Shah, known for his political acumen, called as ‘Chanakya’ played a crucial part in the successful passage of the bill. His strategic brilliance, both in and outside Parliament, remains unmatched, leaving little room for the opposition to counter his moves. Shah’s approach in managing floor strategy and maintaining a strong front has proven effective, showcasing his meticulous planning. Whether it was the removal of Article 370 in Kashmir during Modi’s second term or the passing of the Waqf Bill in the third term, Amit Shah’s strong stance shows he won’t tolerate unnecessary opposition when it comes to national decisions. His leadership remains a crucial strength for the government, ensuring important policies move forward smoothly.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, known for his strategic acumen, had earlier warned the opposition about the consequences of Article 370’s removal, hinting that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir would eventually be reclaimed. During the passage of the Waqf Bill in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Shah once again made it clear to the opposition that everyone must follow the law of the land. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Shah also played a crucial role in managing NDA alliances, ensuring unity despite opposition hopes of a rift. Parties like JDU and Shiv Sena reinforced the strength of the alliance, sending a clear message that the NDA remains intact. The passage of the Waqf Bill further strengthened the NDA, while the opposition found itself cornered. With the bill’s passage, Modi achieved multiple objectives in one move. The opposition, particularly Congress, found itself trapped in a dilemma after opposing the bill. This reinforced the perception of Congress indulging in Muslim appeasement politics, following previous opposition to key measures like the Ram Mandir construction, the triple talaq law, and Article 370. The BJP’s strategy, bolstered by constitutional arguments, effectively discredited Congress’ claims of a constitutional crisis, exposing their narrative as baseless. The BJP firmly positioned itself as the true defender of the Constitution, leaving the opposition struggling to counter its moves.
Prime Minister Modi, by introducing the Waqf Bill in the first year of his third term, has put Congress in a difficult position, accusing them of Muslim appeasement politics and challenging their claims about the Constitution. This move sends a message to Hindus while also confusing some Muslims. If even a small number of poor Muslims start supporting the BJP, it will be a significant setback for the opposition and a big win for the BJP, much like how Muslim women turned toward the BJP after the Triple Talaq law was passed.

Once the Waqf Bill becomes law and the government begins reclaiming occupied lands to give them to needy Muslims, Congress will be further trapped. In states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Assam, BJP will directly benefit from this shift. In Kerala, where Congress faces increasing challenges, the Waqf Bill could change the political landscape. If the government starts returning occupied Waqf lands to poor Muslims and Christians in Kerala, it could alter the outcome of upcoming elections. The BJP has made significant strides in Kerala, and a shift in voter support could hurt Congress, especially if they lose the state for the third time.

Modi’s move with the Waqf Bill is a smart political strategy that could split the opposition. Parties like SP, RJD, and TMC, which focus on Muslim appeasement, will now have to compete for Muslim votes. This will isolate Congress, particularly in Bihar, where the Waqf issue will be central to the elections. The more the opposition attacks the Waqf Bill, the more Hindu voters may turn toward the BJP. After setbacks in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi, the opposition is struggling to find a clear issue to attack the NDA government on.

Although the opposition is showing unity over the Waqf Bill, this unity will likely end after the budget session ends on April 4. These parties won’t be able to openly focus on the Waqf issue in their states. If Congress continues pushing its agenda for backward classes, it will create even more division within the opposition. The BJP is just beginning its strategy of appeasing different communities, and more actions are planned in the future. Issues like Kashi, Mathura, and even Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) are still on the horizon.

</excerpt>

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Aam Aadmi Party national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as anti-reservation and dared Kejriwal to announce that he will conduct caste census and remove the fifty percent ceiling on reservations. Addressing a public meeting in support of the party candidates in Bawana here, Rahul Gandhi alleged that both Modi and Kejriwal were against reservations.

Challenging Kejriwal to announce that he will remove the fifty percent ceiling on the reservations, Rahul Gandhi said, he knows, he (Kejriwal) will never do it as he is against reservations, against the Dalits and against the minorities. Alleging that Kejriwal speaks lies the same way Modi does, he pointed out how he (Kejriwal) had promised to bring in clean politics and still he and his people indulged in the biggest corruption scam in Delhi.

The Congress leader pointed out that Kejriwal had promised five years ago that he would take a bath in river Yamuna and drink its water. Rahul Gandhi challenged him to drink the Yamuna water, and said he knows the AAP leader will never do that as it is completely polluted. He also alleged that Kejriwal never stood by the minorities and said, when the BJP people resorted to violence against the minorities in Delhi, Kejriwal was nowhere seen.

The Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli said that it was only the Congress people including him who stood by them. “Wherever Modi and his people spread hatred and violence, you will find Rahul Gandhi standing up against them”, he assured the people. He also said that Congress and Rahul Gandhi does not fear of Modi. “But Modiji fears of Congress and Rahul Gandhi,” he said. Rahul Gandhi reiterated that India is not the country of hatred and fear but the country of love and harmony. He said, hatred and fear were being spread by Modi and the RSS who make one religion fight against the other, one caste against the other and one language against the other.

Referring to the pressing problems being faced by people, he said, there were no jobs in Delhi today in the regime of Modi and Kejriwal. He highlighted that, parents spend huge amounts of money to educate their children and what they get at the end is just a certificate, not a job. He referred to his meeting with a civil engineering graduate who was working as a coolie at Delhi railway station. But, he said, the government had controlled the narrative in such a way that the media never talks about such things which concern the common people. Instead, he added, the media diverts the attention.

Rahul Gandhi said, unlike the BJP and the AAP, he and the Congress party never made false promises. He referred to the promises made to people of Karnataka and Telangana, which have been fulfilled after the party formed government in the two states.

</excerpt>

The tumultuous 2024 is drawing to a close and what an year its been. Politically speaking this was the year of the Lok Sabha polls that threw up a rather surprising result, with the Modi government failing to reach an outright majority and the Opposition doing better than expected.

However a few months later, the year threw up another surprise when the BJP snatched a win from the jaws of defeat and held onto the trophy state of Haryana. That win had a far reaching impact for it restored the BJPs morale and dent the opposition’s campaign that the Modi government was losing steam. The BJP held on to its winning streak in the Maharashtra polls that followed.

So then what are the takeaways here – as 2024 draws to a close it is safe to say that Brand Modi is still holding strong and remains the country’s dominant political force. Yes, it has been dented in the Lok Sabha, and despite the Haryana and Maharashtra wins, not all the sheen has been restored. But given that the Opposition could not hold on to their Lok Sabha narrative there is still no other political leader in sight who can match the Modi juggernaut.

Which brings us to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha who is leading the opposition charge against the BJP. He had entered 2024 on strong note, fresh from the goodwill of his Bharat Jodo yatra and his political trajectory was on a upswing. This held good for him in the 2024 election as well, when he nearly notched up a 3 figure mark for the Congress (it got 99 seats).

However since then there seems to be a bit of a downswing, post Maharashtra and Haryana. The INDIA bloc is ending the year on a note of recalibration. Should it go ahead with Rahul as its face or should another leader with a more consistent electoral track record take charge. The West Bengal Chief Minister who managed to hold her own in the Lok Sabha polls against the Modi-Shah onslaught has thrown her hat in the ring.

Given that Delhi elections are slated to be held in the first few weeks of the new year (the dates are yet to be announced) it would be interesting to see if the political calculations of 2024 hold good for 2025 as well. In fact, 2025 is a year that the RSS will be celebrating its 100 years, so its important for the Hindutva narrative to hold on to its electoral strongholds. And given the way 2024 is ending that does seem to be the way 2025 is headed.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a sharp stance on Tuesday, extending a public apology to elderly citizens over 70 in Delhi and West Bengal who are unable to access the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, India’s flagship health insurance scheme, due to what he called “political interests” blocking its implementation. Speaking at the inauguration of various health initiatives at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) on the 9th Ayurveda Day, Modi underscored his frustration with the state governments, blaming the absence of Ayushman Bharat Yojana in Delhi and West Bengal on partisan agendas that prioritise politics over people.

“I apologise to all the elderly people above 70 years of age in Delhi and all the elderly people above 70 years of age in West Bengal that I will not be able to serve you,” Modi said. “I apologize to them that I will know how you are, I will get the information, but I will not be able to help you, and the reason is that the government in Delhi and the government in West Bengal are not joining this Ayushman Yojana. Elderly in Delhi, Bengal won’t be able to benefit from Ayushman Bharat as their governments are not implementing it for political reasons,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to help but lamenting that “political walls” have created barriers to aid.

Modi directly addressed the actions of these state governments, condemning what he described as the “tendency to oppress the sick people of your own state for your political interests.” He urged that such behavior is “against any humane attitude.” He went on to say, “I can serve the people of the country, but the walls of political profession are preventing me from serving the elderly people of Delhi and West Bengal.”

His remarks spotlighted a larger divide, as Delhi and West Bengal remain among the few states yet to adopt the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, despite its national rollout. Launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ayushman Bharat aims to provide free access to healthcare for low-income families, covering up to Rs 5 lakh for hospitalizations.

Modi framed the situation as a tragic example of political interests hindering citizens’ access to essential health services, arguing that the scheme could otherwise serve as a backbone for those in need. “The world is seeing India as a big center of medical and wellness tourism,” he added, suggesting that Ayushman Bharat could amplify India’s potential on the global health stage if universally implemented across states.

Also read: PM Modi Launches Rs 12,850 Crore Health Sector Projects on Ayurveda Day

While Modi’s remarks sharply criticized the state governments, he also implied that greater nationwide adoption of Ayushman Bharat would enhance India’s profile in health and wellness, thereby benefiting citizens and furthering national interests. The Prime Minister’s pointed comments reflect mounting pressure on Delhi and West Bengal’s leadership to align with the central government’s health initiatives, sparking further debate on the prioritization of political interests over public welfare.

</excerpt>

In a rally ahead of the Haryana Assembly polls, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that while industrialist Mukesh Ambani spends crores on weddings, farmers are forced to incur heavy debts to organize their own family events. Addressing a roadshow in Bahadurgarh on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi said, “Ambani spent crores on the wedding. Whose money is this? It is your money. You take bank loans to marry your children, but Modi ji has created a system where the selected 25 people can spend crores on weddings, while a farmer can organize a wedding only by drowning in debt.”

Employment Issues and Rising Prices in Haryana

Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP government of failing to address employment issues in Haryana. He pointed out that job opportunities in the state have diminished and criticized the sharp rise in the price of cooking gas. “PM Modi used to say that the cost of a gas cylinder had become ₹400. Today the rate is ₹1,200. When Congress comes to power, the rate of the cylinder will become ₹500, which means we will put ₹700 in your pocket,” he promised.

Promises Made by Rahul Gandhi for Haryana

During his speech, Rahul Gandhi announced several promises that Congress would implement if it comes to power in Haryana. These include:

Providing ₹2,000 monthly assistance to women in the state.

Purchasing paddy from farmers and ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops.

Filling 2 lakh vacant government job positions.

Offering 100-yard plots and ₹3.5 lakh for two-bedroom houses to the poor.

Providing 300 units of free electricity and ₹25 lakh worth of health care insurance.

BJP’s Alleged Attack on the Constitution

Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP and PM Modi of attacking the Constitution by favoring the wealthy, stating, “When PM Modi waives off loans worth ₹16 lakh crores of billionaires and does not waive the loan of farmers, students, then they are attacking the Constitution.” He also targeted the BJP’s support for the three controversial farm laws, which he claimed were designed to benefit industrialists like Adani and Ambani at the expense of farmers.

Voting for all 90 Assembly constituencies in Haryana is scheduled for October 5, from 7 AM to 6 PM, as the political battle intensifies in the state.

Gandhi accused the government of ruining the employment system and favoring capitalists over farmers.

Employment Crisis in Haryana: Rahul Gandhi’s Criticism

Rahul Gandhi claimed that both the central and state governments have destroyed the employment opportunities in Haryana, leading to a mass exodus of young people seeking jobs abroad.

“Narendra Modi and the Haryana government have destroyed the employment system. Children have gone abroad and will not return for years. Meanwhile, Modi gave away farmland to Adani and waived off loans for capitalists, but not for Haryana farmers,” said Gandhi.

Personal Encounters with Haryanvi Youth in the USA

Gandhi shared his experiences from a recent visit to Texas, USA, where he met young men from Haryana who had migrated in search of better opportunities. He described their struggles, including overcrowded living conditions and dangerous journeys to the US.

“Fifteen to twenty thousand people from Haryana are going to America. I met young men in Texas who told me about sleeping 15-20 people in one room and the harrowing journeys they faced, paying as much as ₹35 lakh for their trips,” Gandhi stated.

Congress Promises: Jobs, Affordable Gas, and MSP Guarantee

During his speech, Gandhi made several promises to the people of Haryana, should Congress win the upcoming state elections. He vowed to create employment, support farmers, and empower women.

“We will provide gas cylinders for ₹500 every month, create 2 lakh jobs for youth, guarantee MSP for farmers, and offer immediate compensation if crops are destroyed. We will also build houses for the poor,” he announced.

Gandhi also emphasized the need for a nationwide caste census, accusing the government of filling key institutions with RSS cadres, leaving no representation for marginalized communities.

“All institutions have been handed over to RSS. You won’t find any Dalits, backward classes, or tribals in these places. The bureaucracy and Election Commission are filled with their people, which is why a caste census is essential,” Gandhi added.

Concluding his speech, Gandhi reiterated his commitment to the welfare of farmers and weaker sections of society, criticizing the BJP for undermining the constitution and depriving marginalized groups of their rights.

</excerpt>

The Modi Government has completed 100 days in office during its third term. What is interesting is that this is an event that the Opposition has taken note of more than the government. The Congress specially went all guns blazing with multiple press conferences in various cities to point out all that the government had not delivered. It is never difficult to spot shortfalls and sure enough the feisty Supriya Shrinate came armed with a list of how the Modi Government had failed the farmers, youth, middle class, railways, infrastructure and the social fabric of the country. Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram called this a government of U turns. Certainly there have been one to many rollbacks in the first few months from the decision on indexation of property to lateral entry for bureaucrats, the broadcast bill and the Wakq Board Amendment bill.

Added to that the repeated criticisms from the RSS and the now open rebellion in election going states from those who have been left out of the candidate list this is certainly not a picture either the PRime Minister or the Home Minister would be comfortable with.
But having said that, the duo are carrying on with business as usual from Day One. Whether it was the decision to appoint the same cabinet as the one in Modi 2.0 (the big four remained the same), or to appoint a Lok Sabha speaker of this choice (again this was a repeat of Modi 2.0), or even the decision to defer the election/selection of a new BJP Chief, there is little in terms of optics to show that the all powerful duo are rattled by the opposition attack. Until the allies pull out the Modi Government is here to stay, which is why one can see some very subtle (and some not so subtle as in the budget grants) to appease Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. If these two are content then the rest dont really matter because if you look at it closely, no one wants this government to fall. The Opposition for all its hue and cry is in no position to form an alternate government. If the Congress was to take the lead, it would be at the mercy of its allies and in a much more precarious position than the current Modi government. If a smaller regional party leader gets to be prime minister then it would be the case of the tail wagging the dog. The Congress does not make for a reliable ally when it is in a supporting role. We have the United Front Experiment as a case in point (1996-1998). This is something Chandrababu Naidu also recalls all too well.

That leaves the RSS. For all its (implied) criticism of Narendra Modi’s style of functioning the RSS leadership is also all too aware that without Modi’s leadership the tally would have been much lower for the BJP. Coming back for a third term is no easy feat and Modi is still the BJPs best bet to stay on in power.

So in the end, the BJP may end up losing the Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and J&K polls as the pollsters are predicting. Yes it will be a loss of face, but will it lead to anything more than that, I doubt it. The Modi Government will last out its full term, because that is what all the political parties want.
</excerpt>

Why is there so much focus on the coming state elections, and how will they impact the politics of the Centre. Each state election is important in itself, but there is also a larger impact that this will have on the Central government. There is a psychological impact that is felt when the ruling government at the center wins or loses a state election, more so in the era of Modi when the Prime Minister has emerged as the party’s star campaigner and made each election a referendum on his leadership credibility.

Unfortunately for the BJP, the coming spate of state elections in Haryana, J&K and later on in Maharashtra and Jharkhand seemed veered towards the opposition more than the BJP. The BJP is in power in Haryana and Maharashtra and there is governor’s rule in J&K. Hence the first problem will be that of anti-incumbency. In the past the BJP under Narendra Modi has successfully warded off the perils of anti incumbancy but that has also been there has been a strong CM at the helm of the state. Here, the Haryana CM has not had much time to consolidate himself against a two term anti-incumbency while Maharashtra is a coalition government with a non BJP CM at the helm. It is not going to be easy for the party specially at a time when the Congress and its allies fancy their chances for a comeback.

Having said that, should the BJP fare poorly in the coming elections, how will it impact the Prime Minister. Here again, a lot depends on the individual. Any other Prime Minister would be affected by the optics of a resurgent opposition but so far Narendra Modi has shown no such qualms. He wasted no time in calling the newly elected BJP government as an NDA government and then went to fill the cabinet with his own team. Likewise with the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Yes there have been some rollbacks on key issues but they have been dealt with swiftly as coalition compulsions. And since the PM did not dwell on them much but moved on to the next order of business it did not impact the governance optics all that much.

That, in a nutshell, is the secret of Narendra Modi. Go with the flow, manage the optics and bide your time for a comeback. Because if there is anyone who knows how to come out of a corner, it is Modi. It is now up to the Opposition led by a resurgent Rahul Gandhi to figure out how to contain this phenomenon. All in all, it does make for some interesting politics

</excerpt>

Congress has torn into Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the collapse of a 35-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Maharashtra. They have asked if Modi would tender an apology for putting his interests above the memory of the founder of the Maratha empire.

Opposition parties have attacked the Maharashtra government after a statue collapses at Rajkot Fort on Monday. The Statue was unveiled by Modi on December 4 last year during Navy Day Celebrations.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted a video on X of Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurating a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Pratapgad in 1957 and said, “67 years later, the statue still stands tall and undamaged.”

Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal accused Modi and the Maharashtra administration of rushing through the statue’s construction only to ensure its inauguration by the PM ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. “In true Modi fashion, the priority was to hurriedly construct a statue on 3 months’ notice, so that it is inaugurated by the PM just before elections,” said Venugopal in an X post. The worse part is that this shoddy job had come for Rs. 236 crores! Will PM Modi apologize to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for putting his own personal ambitions above Maharaj’s legacy?

“Venugopal also criticizes PM’s response to allegations of corruption related to hasty-opened projects, listing many of the buildings that, shortly after being inaugurated, have since faced issues: “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue at Sindhudurg Fort: Inauguration: December 2023; Collapse: August 2024; Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link: Inauguration: January 2024, cracks appear: June 2024; Mumbai Coastal Road: Inauguration: March 2024; Leakage: May 2024; Jabalpur Airport: Inauguration: March 2024; roof collapse: June 2024; Sudarshan Setu Bridge (Gujarat The MVA also announced that it would organize a protest march against the state government over the statue collapse. Uddhav Thackeray accused the Eknath Shinde dispensation of resorting to blame high velocity winds for the incident.

</excerpt>

Speaking in Jalgaon on Sunday during an interaction with beneficiaries of the Lakhpati Didi scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that crimes against women are inexcusable and must be met with strict punishment. He emphasized that perpetrators should not be spared, and those who assist them in any way should also face consequences. Modi’s comments are seen as a response to recent incidents, including the rape of a medical professional in Kolkata and the assault of two juveniles in Badlapur, Maharashtra.

The Prime Minister stressed that there should be no delay in addressing crimes against women and warned that any institution—be it hospitals, police, schools, or offices—found delaying or being lax in their response would be held accountable. “Governments may come and go, but women’s safety must be ensured,” he stated, adding, “We are strengthening the laws to ensure the strictest punishment is given.”

Modi also highlighted new measures under the **Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita** that aim to expedite justice for women. He noted that women can now file an e-FIR from their homes if they are uncomfortable visiting a police station, and that there are provisions for the death penalty and life imprisonment for severe crimes against women. Additionally, the new laws address issues of men deceiving women with false promises of marriage, which was not adequately covered before.

Criticizing the delays and inadequacies in handling recent crimes, Modi assured that the central government is fully supporting state governments in addressing these cases. His remarks follow criticisms faced by both the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal and the Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP government in Maharashtra for their handling of crimes against women.

During his address, Modi also spoke about the success of the Lakhpati Didi scheme, noting that over 1.1 million women had joined the program in the last two months, with an additional 100,000 joining on Sunday. He praised the efforts of Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar in making women self-sufficient through various schemes, including those that empower women in banking and agriculture.

The Prime Minister emphasized that India is on its way to becoming a developed nation, with Maharashtra playing a crucial role in this progress. He highlighted the state’s potential to attract investors and create jobs and stressed the importance of a **Mahayuti** government to drive industrial growth and skill development.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Wayanad, Kerala, to assess the destruction caused by landslides that hit on July 30, claiming over 200 lives and leaving many missing. His visit aimed to offer empathy and assure central government support for recovery efforts.

Modi Reflects on the Morbi Disaster

During his visit, Modi recalled the 1979 Morbi dam disaster in Gujarat, one of India’s deadliest dam failures, to express his understanding of the suffering faced by disaster-stricken communities. “I have seen and experienced a disaster very closely,” Modi shared, emphasizing his commitment to support Wayanad through this difficult time.

Surveying the Damage

Modi conducted an aerial and on-the-ground survey of the affected areas. He visited the severely impacted Chooralmala region, where he interacted with rescue personnel, state officials, and local residents. At a relief camp in Meppadi, Modi spent time with survivors, offering comfort to those who lost family members in the landslides.

The prime minister was accompanied by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Union Minister Suresh Gopi. They walked on a 190-foot Bailey bridge built by the army in Chooralmala following the disaster.

Commitment to Aid Recovery

Before leaving Wayanad, Modi assured Kerala that the central government would provide all necessary resources to aid in recovery and rebuilding efforts, drawing on his experience to guide relief measures and ensure a comprehensive response to the tragedy.

</excerpt>

The evolution of India’s tax system is a complex narrative interwoven with the country’s historical, economic, and social fabric. From the heavy-handed imposition of taxes during the British colonial era to the modern challenges of balancing revenue generation with social welfare, India’s tax system has been a reflection of its broader societal transformations. The recent increase in the taxation of health insurance premiums, as highlighted in the Union Budget of 2024-25, has rekindled a debate about the role of taxes in the healthcare sector. This essay explores the historical trajectory of India’s tax policies, tracing how these policies have shaped contemporary attitudes towards health insurance taxation and their broader implications for healthcare access and equity.

A Colonial Legacy of Extraction

India’s tax history is deeply rooted in the colonial era, where taxation was primarily a tool for resource extraction by the British Empire. The colonial tax structure was designed to maximize revenue for the British while minimizing their administrative costs. The infamous land revenue systems—the Permanent Settlement, Mahalwari, and Ryotwari—were emblematic of this approach, placing an enormous burden on the rural population. These systems not only entrenched poverty and indebtedness among farmers but also disrupted traditional agricultural practices, leading to widespread economic distress.

In addition to direct taxes like land revenue, the British imposed various indirect taxes, such as the salt tax, which disproportionately affected the poorer sections of society. The introduction of income tax in 1860 marked a shift towards direct taxation, but this shift was undermined by numerous exemptions that favored the wealthy and powerful. The inequity of the colonial tax system fueled resentment and resistance, epitomized by Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March in 1930, a protest against the oppressive salt tax that symbolized the broader struggle against colonial exploitation.

Post-Independence: A Balancing Act

The dawn of independence in 1947 brought with it the monumental task of overhauling the colonial tax system and creating a framework that would support nation-building and economic development. The early post-independence years saw the Indian government grappling with the dual challenges of addressing the inequities of the past while laying the groundwork for a modern economy. Income tax emerged as a key revenue source, with the introduction of income tax slabs aimed at ensuring a fairer distribution of the tax burden.

However, the challenge of balancing revenue generation with social welfare remained a persistent issue. The 1970s witnessed an ambitious experiment with a highly progressive tax structure, which sought to reduce income inequality by imposing steep taxes on the wealthy. Unfortunately, this approach backfired, leading to widespread tax evasion and stifling economic growth. The experience underscored the importance of finding a balance between equity and efficiency in tax policy—a lesson that continues to resonate in contemporary debates about health insurance taxation.

The Middle Class and the Tax Burden

The emergence of the Indian middle class as a significant economic force in the latter half of the 20th century coincided with important changes in tax policy. The introduction of income tax slabs allowed the burgeoning middle class to save and invest, contributing to economic growth and social mobility. However, this segment of society has also borne the brunt of successive tax increases over the years.

The imposition of capital gains tax on real estate, for example, has had a considerable impact on the middle class, affecting their ability to invest in property—a traditional avenue for wealth accumulation. Moreover, the rising cost of living, coupled with stagnant income growth for many, has exacerbated the tax burden on the middle class. In this context, the recent hike in health insurance premiums is seen as yet another financial blow to a segment already struggling with economic pressures.

Health Insurance: A New Frontier in Taxation

The inclusion of health insurance premiums within the tax net is a relatively recent development in India’s fiscal landscape. This move, ostensibly aimed at broadening the tax base, has sparked intense debate about its implications for healthcare accessibility and affordability. Critics argue that taxing health insurance premiums discourages individuals from opting for private health insurance, which could lead to an increased reliance on the already overburdened public healthcare system.

From the government’s perspective, the tax hike is justified as a necessary measure to fund healthcare initiatives and improve the overall health infrastructure. However, the perception of this move as contradictory to the stated goal of making healthcare more affordable has eroded public trust. The public’s discontent with the taxation of health insurance reflects a broader frustration with the perceived inequities of the tax system—a sentiment that has deep historical roots.

The Economic Ripple Effects of Health Insurance Tax Hike

The decision to increase taxes on health insurance premiums has far-reaching implications for the Indian economy. While the government may anticipate increased revenue from this move, the potential economic consequences are complex and multifaceted.

Direct Economic Impact

One of the immediate effects of the health insurance tax hike is a reduction in disposable income for individuals and households. With higher health insurance premiums adding to the already significant inflationary pressures, many families find their purchasing power further diminished. This reduction in disposable income can dampen consumer spending, which is a key driver of economic growth in India.

For the middle class, which is already grappling with rising living costs, the increased tax burden represents a significant financial strain. This demographic is likely to cut back on discretionary spending, leading to a potential slowdown in consumption-driven sectors of the economy. Additionally, if businesses are forced to bear a larger share of health insurance costs for their employees, they may resort to cost-cutting measures, including layoffs. Such actions could increase unemployment rates and further dampen economic activity.

Indirect Economic Consequences

The broader economic implications of the health insurance tax hike are equally concerning. In the healthcare sector, there is a risk that the tax increase could discourage people from purchasing health insurance, leading to a decline in the insurance pool. A smaller insurance pool would make it more expensive for insurers to operate, potentially triggering further premium hikes and creating a vicious cycle.

For individuals who opt out of health insurance due to the higher costs, the result is likely to be increased out-of-pocket expenses for medical treatments. This can lead to financial hardship, particularly for lower-income families who are already vulnerable to economic shocks. Furthermore, a decline in private health insurance coverage could place additional strain on the public healthcare system, which is already under-resourced and struggling to meet the needs of the population.

Long-Term Implications

In the long term, the increased tax burden on health insurance premiums could have a chilling effect on the investment climate in India. High taxes and rising costs of living may discourage both domestic and foreign investors, potentially slowing economic growth. Moreover, if the tax hike is perceived as unfair or regressive, it could lead to social unrest and protests, disrupting economic activity and further eroding public trust in the government.

Another potential long-term consequence is the risk of a “brain drain,” where skilled professionals, disillusioned by high taxes and limited economic opportunities, seek employment abroad. Such a loss of talent could hamper India’s economic progress and innovation, undermining the country’s competitive position in the global economy.

Balancing Act: Revenue Generation and Economic Growth

The government faces the challenging task of balancing the need for revenue generation with the potential economic consequences of tax hikes. To mitigate the negative impact of the health insurance tax increase, the government could explore alternative revenue sources. Improving tax compliance, reducing tax exemptions for the wealthy, and exploring new avenues of taxation are potential strategies to consider.

Moreover, it is crucial for the government to invest the additional revenue generated from the health insurance tax wisely. Strengthening the public healthcare system and making quality healthcare accessible and affordable to all citizens should be a top priority. Such investments would not only improve the overall health of the population but also contribute to economic growth by reducing productivity losses due to illness.

Tax Exemptions and Healthcare Access: A Complex Relationship

Tax exemptions have long been a cornerstone of fiscal policy in India, aimed at incentivizing specific behaviors or supporting particular sectors of the economy. In the healthcare sector, tax exemptions have been used to promote health insurance coverage, encourage medical research, and support charitable activities. However, the effectiveness of these exemptions in shaping healthcare access is a complex issue with both positive and negative implications.

Tax Exemptions and Health Insurance

One of the most common uses of tax exemptions in healthcare is to incentivize individuals to purchase health insurance. By allowing individuals to deduct health insurance premiums from their taxable income, the government aims to make insurance more affordable and increase coverage rates. While this approach has been successful in some countries, its effectiveness in India is debatable due to several factors.

First, income inequality remains a significant challenge. Tax exemptions primarily benefit higher-income individuals who are more likely to afford health insurance in the first place. Lower-income individuals, who would benefit most from increased coverage, may not be able to take advantage of these exemptions due to their limited taxable income. Additionally, a large portion of the Indian population operates in the informal economy, with limited access to formal financial services and tax benefits. This limits the reach of tax exemptions in promoting health insurance coverage among vulnerable groups.

Another challenge is the administrative burden associated with claiming tax exemptions. The process can be complex and time-consuming, often requiring individuals to maintain detailed records and navigate bureaucratic hurdles. This can deter people from claiming eligible deductions, reducing the overall impact of the exemption.

Tax Exemptions and Medical Research

Tax exemptions are also used to promote medical research and development. By providing tax breaks to pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and donors, the government aims to accelerate innovation and the development of new treatments and cures. While these incentives can stimulate research, they also raise concerns about the affordability and accessibility of new drugs and technologies.

Pharmaceutical companies may use tax exemptions to offset research and development costs, but this does not always translate into lower prices for consumers. High drug prices can limit access to life-saving treatments, particularly for patients who cannot afford the exorbitant costs. Moreover, research efforts are often directed towards diseases with a larger market potential, leading to a neglect of rare or neglected diseases that disproportionately affect low-income populations.

To address these challenges, the government could explore alternative approaches to incentivizing medical research, such as public-private partnerships, grants, and subsidies. These mechanisms could help ensure that the benefits of medical innovation are more equitably distributed across society.

Tax Exemptions and Charitable Healthcare Activities

In addition to promoting health insurance and medical research, tax exemptions are also used to support charitable healthcare activities. Nonprofit organizations that provide free or low-cost medical services to underserved populations often rely on tax-exempt donations and grants to fund their operations. These organizations play a crucial role in filling gaps in the public healthcare system, particularly in rural and remote areas.

However, the reliance on tax-exempt donations raises questions about the sustainability and scalability of charitable healthcare initiatives. While these organizations provide essential services, they are often limited by funding constraints and may not be able to meet the growing demand for healthcare in India. Moreover, the availability of tax exemptions can create disparities in the allocation of resources, with some regions or populations receiving more support than others.

</excerpt>

AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the Modi government on Sunday in response to reports about proposed amendments to the Waqf Board Act. Owaisi claimed that these amendments indicate an attempt by the Centre to undermine the autonomy of the Waqf Board and increase its interference in the board’s affairs.

Speaking at a conference, Owaisi said, “The central government is acting against parliamentary norms and privileges by communicating these plans to the media instead of informing Parliament directly. The media reports suggest that the Modi government aims to diminish the Waqf Board’s autonomy and interfere with its operations, which goes against the principles of religious freedom.”

Owaisi also accused the BJP of consistently opposing Waqf boards and properties as part of a broader “Hindutva agenda.” He warned that amendments to the Waqf Board’s establishment and composition could lead to administrative confusion and a reduction in the board’s autonomy. He expressed concerns that increased government control could affect the board’s independence and cited fears that disputed properties might be surveyed by government entities with potentially biased outcomes.

“Reports indicate that if there are disputed properties, they will be surveyed by the BJP and state governments, leading to questionable results. There are already instances where the BJP-RSS dispute the existence of certain dargahs and mosques. This move appears to be an attempt to shift judicial authority to the executive,” he added.

Earlier reports suggested that the government plans to introduce around 40 amendments to the Waqf Act in the next parliamentary session.

</excerpt>

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday slammed the government over the derailment of Chandigarh-Dibrugarg Express in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who leave no opportunity for self-publicity, must take direct responsibility of the massive lapses that have plagued the Indian Railways.

He also demanded that the Kavach anti-collision system should be installed expeditiously on all routes across India to ensure enhanced safety measures and prevent accidents.
His remarks came after at least two people died and seven other injured after six coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed Thursday afternoon in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh.

Even as relief and rescue operations were underway, the Railways has initiated high-level inquiry into the accident, officials said
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Kharge, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha hitting out at the government said, “The derailment of Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express in UP, is yet another instance of how Modi government has systematically jeopardised Rail safety.”

He said, “Our deepest condolences to the families of the bereaved, and our thoughts and prayers are with the injured.”
Pointing out fingers on the previous rail accident, the Congress chief said, “A month ago, 11 people lost their lives when a goods train collided with the Sealdah–Agartala Kanchanjunga Express.”

He also pointed out that the Commissioner of Railway safety has said that the accident was “waiting to happen”.
Taking a jibe at the government, Kharge then said that failure of automatic signal, lapses at multiple levels in managing operations, and non-availability of critical safety equipment such as walkie-talkie with the loco pilot and train manager are some of the reasons cited for collision in the probe report.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Railway Minister, who leave no opportunity for self-publicity, must take direct responsibility of the massive lapses that have plagued the Indian Railways,” he alleged.

Putting forth the party’s demand, Kharge said that our single demand — the Kavach anti-collision system should be installed expeditiously on all routes across India to ensure enhanced safety measures and prevent accidents.

</excerpt>

JDU MP Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh voiced his confidence in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), affirming that all leaders present at the meeting reiterated their support for Narendra Modi, advocating for his third term as Prime Minister. Singh highlighted the unity among constituent parties in endorsing Modi for his third tenure following the NDA’s triumph in the Lok Sabha elections.

Singh reiterated the unwavering backing for Modi, emphasizing solidarity with both the Prime Minister and the NDA. He outlined the forthcoming procedural measures, indicating that a meeting of the NDA parliamentary party would be convened promptly to elect its leader, paving the way for the government’s formation.

The NDA convened a landmark meeting on Wednesday, attended by Narendra Modi and top leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party, underlining the coalition’s solidarity. The NDA leaders reiterated their trust in Modi, selecting him as the alliance’s leader for the third consecutive term.

After the meeting, Modi affirmed the NDA’s commitment to national progress and regional aspirations, expressing determination to serve India’s vast population and cultivate a developed nation.

In a subsequent gathering to deliberate on the new government’s formation, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu reaffirmed his party’s allegiance to the NDA. The unanimous resolution passed during the meeting appointed Narendra Modi as the leader of the NDA, with prominent leaders across various parties in attendance.

The participation of leaders like Naidu and Nitish Kumar in the NDA meeting assumes significance, as their parties’ support is pivotal for the BJP to establish the government. Despite falling 32 seats short of the majority mark, as announced by the Election Commission of India, the BJP secured 240 seats, while the Congress won 99 seats. In parallel, President Droupadi Murmu dissolved the 17th Lok Sabha, as per the Union Cabinet’s recommendation, in compliance with constitutional provisions.

</excerpt>

In Washington, DC, US President Joe Biden engaged in a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s forthcoming trip to New Delhi, amidst extending congratulations to Modi on his success in the Lok Sabha polls. President Biden, in a statement from the White House, hailed the victory of Modi and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in India’s general elections, applauding the massive turnout of nearly 650 million voters, marking it as the largest democratic exercise in history.

Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership, emphasizing their shared vision for a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, they discussed Sullivan’s upcoming visit to engage with the new Indian government on mutual priorities, including the strategic technology partnership.

During a subsequent telephonic conversation, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for President Biden’s warm congratulations and appreciation for Indian democracy, underscoring the enduring partnership between India and the US as a force for global welfare. Modi, in a social media post, emphasized the promising future of the India-US Comprehensive Global Partnership and its positive impact on humanity.

President Biden, likewise, conveyed his felicitations to Modi and the NDA through a social media platform, recognizing the significance of their victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the growing friendship between the two nations.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election results, declared by the Election Commission of India, revealed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in 240 constituencies and the Congress party’s success in 99.

Modi’s consecutive triumphs in the Lok Sabha polls garnered well-wishes from leaders worldwide, including those from neighboring countries like Maldives, and nations such as Israel, Ukraine, and Italy, reflecting the international acknowledgment of his electoral success.

</excerpt>

In a closely contested election, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), secured 293 seats in the Lok Sabha, marking their third consecutive term. The Opposition INDIA alliance put up a significant fight, winning 232 seats, but the final mandate was less decisive than anticipated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi on June 4, celebrated the NDA’s victory. He noted that this was the first time since 1962 that a government had returned for a third term after completing two terms. Despite the triumph, the results revealed that the BJP fell short of an outright majority, signalling potential reliance on alliance partners.

Global media outlets quickly reacted to the election results:

The Washington Post: Described the outcome as an “unexpected repudiation” of Modi’s leadership, calling it a “stunning setback” that pierced his “aura of invincibility.” For the first time in years, Modi seemed vulnerable.

The Guardian: Highlighted that the anticipated landslide victory for the BJP did not materialize, characterizing the results as an “unexpected blow” to Modi. The paper pointed to a nervous BJP campaign that leaned on polarizing religious rhetoric and noted the INDIA bloc’s resilience.

BBC: Emphasized Modi’s reduced majority, framing the election as a referendum on his decade in office. The mood in BJP offices was described as “sombre,” acknowledging the fierce and sometimes vitriolic campaign waged by both sides.

The New York Times: Declared that Modi’s “aura of invincibility” had been shattered. The results were seen as “unexpectedly sobering,” marking a sharp reversal in Modi’s transformational tenure. The NYT speculated on whether Modi’s personal influence was crucial in the BJP’s ability to scrape by or if his brand had peaked.

Deutsche Welle: Quoted political scientist Gilles Verniers, who labeled the election a “personal setback” for Modi. The future path for the BJP, whether towards political conciliation or further autocracy, remains to be seen.

The Telegraph: Referred to the results as a “surprise loss of majority” for Modi, noting the muted atmosphere at the BJP victory party compared to the jubilant celebrations of 2019.

As international leaders continue to send their congratulations, the global media consensus suggests that while Modi and the NDA secured another term, the election results have significantly altered the political landscape in India.

In his congratulatory message, Tobgay has vowed to work closely with PM Modi-led “Bharat” to strengthen ties between India and Bhutan.
“Congratulations to my friend PM @narendramodi ji and NDA for the historic 3rd consecutive win in the world’s biggest elections. As he continues to lead Bharat to great heights, I look forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the relations between our 2 countries,” he said in a post on X.

As the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections nears completion, the Bharatiya Janata Party is ahead in 240 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by BJP is leading in approximately 300 seats.

PM Modi addressed the nation from the BJP headquarters in New Delhi after the NDA’s victory, stating, “Our citizens in India have full faith in the party, and today’s victory is a victory of the people.”

According to the Election Commission of India, PM Modi defeated Congress candidate Ajay Rai by a margin of 1,52,513 votes, receiving 6,12,970 votes against Rai’s 4,60,457 votes. Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Ather Jamal Lari secured the third position with 33,766 votes.

Most exit polls had predicted a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with several projecting a two-thirds majority for the ruling BJP-led NDA. The extensive seven-phase election, the world’s largest democratic exercise, began on April 19 and concluded on Saturday.

</excerpt>

With a record margin of more than 11.75 lakh votes, BJP’s Shankar Lalwani wins from Indore. According to the Election Commission of India, Shankar Lalwani, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Madhya Pradesh parliamentary constituency in Indore, won the general elections of 2024 on Tuesday with an astounding margin of 11,75,092 votes.
With a resounding mandate of 12,26,751 votes, Lalwani defeated NOTA (None of the Above), which received 2,18,674 votes in the Indore constituency. Sanjay Solanki, the Bahujan Samaj Party candidate, received 51,659 votes, placing him in third place. Not a single contender was able to surpass the votes obtained by NOTA.
Notably, Akshay Kanti Bam, the Congress nominee from Indore, dropped his candidacy on the deadline for withdrawing one’s nomination and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the elections, the Congress party encouraged voters to click the NOTA button.
The ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) option was added in 2013 to allow voters to choose not to select any of the candidates running for office.
“Indore’s historic win is the victory of PM Modi, development works, the hard work of party workers, and the public,” Lalwani declared after securing the seat.
The BJP leader made the following statement regarding the NOTA: “Congress was in a negative role; they campaigned for NOTA. However, in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the NOTA received not even half the votes that Congress did. This indicates that the public is with Modi.

Shah also commented on Kejriwal’s recent interim bail, expressing skepticism over the judgment’s impartiality. “A lot of people in this country believe that a special treatment has been given,” Shah remarked.

Responding to queries about Kejriwal’s participation in the INDIA alliance campaign following his release, Shah remarked, “Right now he (Arvind Kejriwal) is stuck in another issue (Swati Maliwal assault), let him get free from that then let’s see what happens.”

Kejriwal had further speculated on the succession plan, suggesting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as Modi’s potential successor.

However, UP CM dismissed Kejriwal’s assertion as a “desperate attempt” to attack using PM Modi’s age as an excuse.

</excerpt>

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya expressed strong confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi securing a third consecutive term from the Varanasi parliamentary seat, which will vote on June 1 in the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha elections. “PM Modi’s impressive campaign in Varanasi has energized people across the country,” Maurya stated on Tuesday, ahead of the Prime Minister filing his nomination papers in the temple town.

“Today, the Prime Minister sought the blessings of Baba Vishwanath and Kaal Bhairav. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, there will be development, poverty alleviation, and women’s empowerment,” Keshav Prasad Maurya stated while speaking to ANI. He urged people to trust in Modi, calling him the “creator of the new age” and adding, “Such a leader comes to earth only once.”

Maurya expressed strong confidence that Narendra Modi will secure a third consecutive term as Prime Minister and that the BJP will win all 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, he took a jab at Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, predicting that Yadav’s party, part of the opposition INDIA bloc, would lose all 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, including their stronghold in Kannauj.

Maurya stated that despite the support of Congress and the Trinamool Congress, both members of the INDIA grouping, the Samajwadi Party (SP) would not be able to win seats in Uttar Pradesh.

After filing his nomination, Prime Minister Modi took to the social media platform X to express his gratitude, stating it was an “honor” to serve the people of Varanasi. “Filed my nomination papers as a candidate for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. It is an honor to serve the people of this historic seat. With the blessings of the people, there have been remarkable achievements over the last decade. This pace of work will get even faster in the times to come,” PM Modi posted on X.

A total of 25 NDA leaders attended the Prime Minister’s nomination filing today. On Monday, he held a roadshow in Varanasi. The Varanasi seat comprises five Assembly segments: Rohaniya, Varanasi North, Varanasi South, Varanasi Cantt, and Sevapuri. Varanasi is a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and PM Modi, making it a highly anticipated contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

PM Modi previously won the Varanasi seat in both the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections with significant majorities. In this election, the Congress has fielded Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai against PM Modi in Varanasi. This marks the third time Ajay Rai will contest against PM Modi in the Lok Sabha elections.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, PM Modi won the seat with over 674,664 votes, securing a vote share of 63.6 percent. In 2014, PM Modi contested two Lok Sabha seats—Gujarat’s Vadodara and Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi.

</excerpt>

Congress candidate from the Bangalore Rural seat, DK Suresh, remarked on Saturday that Prime Minister Modi, who is scheduled to hold a rally today, should inform the people about his contributions to Karnataka’s development over the past decade.

Speaking to ANI, Suresh expressed confidence in receiving more support in his constituency compared to the last election. He stated, “I am getting more support compared to the last election. Everybody in my constituency, irrespective of caste and age, is supporting me. The five guarantees of our government have worked for everyone. I have worked diligently for the development of my constituency, addressing both personal and governmental issues. People recognize my efforts. I have also outlined future plans, including assuring good quality and regular supply of Cauvery water wherever needed in my constituency.”

Regarding Prime Minister Modi’s visit, Suresh added, “PM Modi is coming today. He has to tell the people what he has done in the past 10 years for the development of Karnataka. How much money has he allocated? Why is he unable to control price rises?”

Suresh criticized the BJP, stating that they are not fulfilling their promises, while the Congress has delivered on its guarantees in the state. He emphasized that the current election revolves around national issues, with the BJP’s failure to address price rises and unemployment being major concerns. </excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil the PM PVTG (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups) Development Mission on January 15, coinciding with Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, marking a significant step towards the holistic development of PVTGs. The Rs 24,000 crore mission, a first-of-its-kind since Independence, will be implemented through the convergence of 11 interventions across nine ministries. Key initiatives include PMGSY, PMGAY, Jal Jeevan Mission, and others.

This mission aims to cover 75 PVTGs in 18 states and Union Territories, residing in 22,544 villages across 220 districts, with a total population of approximately 28 lakhs. PVTGs often inhabit remote, scattered, and inaccessible areas, emphasizing the need for comprehensive development efforts. The mission intends to saturate PVTG families and their habitations with essential facilities like road and telecom connectivity, electricity, safe housing, clean drinking water, sanitation, and improved access to education, health, nutrition, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Scheme norms will be relaxed to extend coverage to these remote habitations, with a focus on achieving saturation for initiatives like PMJAY, Sickle Cell Disease Elimination, TB Elimination, 100% immunization, PM Surakshit Matritva Yojana, PM Matru Vandana Yojana, PM Poshan, and PM Jan Dhan Yojana. The launch of the Pradhan Mantri PVTG Development Mission was announced in the Union budget for 2023-24 to enhance the socio-economic conditions of PVTGs.
