</excerpt>

Ahead of the first Joint Action Committee meeting scheduled for Saturday with several Chief Ministers and political leaders, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin emphasized the importance of fair delimitation. He stated that the issue extends beyond the number of parliamentary seats and directly impacts the rights of the state.

Delimitation and Its Impact on Tamil Nadu

Stalin highlighted the urgency of the matter in a video message posted on X, explaining why his party, the DMK, has been actively raising concerns about delimitation. “Fair delimitation is the talk of the town right now. Why has the DMK brought this to focus? Because in 2026, delimitation will happen. And if the delimitation exercise is carried out based on population, our representation in Parliament will be severely affected. This is not just about the number of MPs but about our State’s rights. This is why we have convened a meeting of all parties. Except the BJP, every other party stood together as one,” he said.

His remarks reflect Tamil Nadu’s ongoing opposition to the process, as many in the state fear that basing seat allocation on population size could significantly reduce their representation in Parliament.

Conflict with the Central Government

The Tamil Nadu government, under Stalin’s leadership, has been at odds with the Central government over various issues, including the proposed three-language policy in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the upcoming delimitation process.

To strengthen opposition against the delimitation exercise, Stalin called for a meeting of the Joint Action Committee on March 22 in Chennai. He invited leaders from multiple political parties to come together and resist what he described as a “blatant assault on federalism.”

Additionally, Stalin reached out to the Chief Ministers of seven states, including both those aligned with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and opposition-ruled states, urging them to unite against what he termed an “unfair exercise.”

Chidambaram Warns of Seat Reduction for Southern States

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram also expressed serious concerns about the consequences of delimitation. He warned that if the process proceeds as planned, southern states could lose a significant number of Lok Sabha seats, which would diminish their influence in national policymaking.

“Delimitation is a serious issue. It was frozen in 1971. A census taken after 2026 will lead to delimitation, followed by re-determination of the seats. According to our calculation, if it is redistributed according to the current population of states, and the state’s numbers are changed, our southern states, which have 129 seats, will come down to 103. The five southern states will lose 26 seats, whereas the populous states where population is growing will gain seats, especially UP, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan,” Chidambaram explained.

His statement underscores the growing concern that states like Tamil Nadu, which have successfully controlled population growth, may be unfairly penalized, while states with higher birth rates stand to gain parliamentary seats.

With leaders from multiple parties raising alarm over the potential consequences, the upcoming meeting in Chennai is expected to be a significant step in shaping the opposition’s response to the delimitation exercise.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan refutes the claim, insisting NEP promotes linguistic freedom. BJP ramps up its campaign ahead of the 2026 elections.
</excerpt>

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is defending the National Education Policy (NEP) amid the heated language dispute between Tamil Nadu and the central government, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and his party, the DMK, vigorously reject the three-language policy.

Pradhan Rejects Language Enforcement

Pradhan wrote MK Stalin a letter on Friday saying that the NEP does not mandate any language but seeks to lessen an “over-reliance on foreign languages,” consequently strengthening students’ linguistic foundation.

Writing, “The NEP supports the idea of linguistic freedom and guarantees that students go on learning in the language of their selection,” he said. He slammed the DMK for rejecting the policy on “political grounds” and seeing “progressive reforms as dangers to keep political narratives going.

Re-emphasizing the government’s will to advance Tamil culture and language internationally, the Education Minister also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement in Chennai in 2022, “Tamil language is eternal,” and write, “The Modi government is fully committed to promoting and popularising Tamil culture and language globally.
DMK Alleges Hindi Imposition, Stalin Seeks Education Funds

The letter came after Stalin pleaded with PM Modi to release Rs 2,154 crore in funding for the education sector for the 2024–2025 fiscal year. Stalin accused the Center of “blackmailing” Tamil Nadu into agreeing to the three-language arrangement, which included Hindi, by withholding funds.

Stalin confirmed Tamil Nadu’s continued support of its two-language policy, Tamil and English, which followed since 1967. He stated, ”Our policy for the three-language system of the NEP will not be dropped.”

Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin repeated his father’s view that Tamil Nadu was prepared for another “language war.” He cautioned the BJP-controlled government: “this is a Dravidian land… the land of Periyar” and said, “The last time you tried to take away the rights of the Tamil people, they started ‘GoBackModi’.
Historical Opposition in Tamil Nadu Against Hindi

Traditionally, Tamil Nadu has resisted Hindi enforced. Anti-Hindi riots in the 1930s and 1960s helped the state to accept the two-language standard.

Emphasizing that Tamil and English are adequate for pupils, state Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said “Since 1967, Tamil Nadu has had this two-language rule, which we have made rather good way. We make high performers in STEM disciplines, therefore supporting the functioning of our educational system.”

Three-language Initiative by BJP Ahead of 2026 Elections

Seeking to make headway in the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP has stepped up its push for the three-language formula of the NEP in Tamil Nadu. The party is primed to start a state-wide initiative on March 1 to advance the policy.

Rejecting DMK’s opposition as obsolete, BJP Tamil Nadu leader K Annamalai ran with it. “The world is changing fast. He wondered the reason for forcing the youth of Tamil Nadu to follow your 1960s policy.

Though the BJP has tried, they have found it challenging to establish themselves in Tamil Nadu. It fought for all 234 seats in the state election of 2016 but did not win any. It vied for 20 seats in 2021 and won four. The party got no seats in the state in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019 and 2024.

The language policy issue is due to growing tensions to become a significant political flashpoint before the next polls.

</excerpt>

In a tragic turn of events, five people lost their lives, and over 50 others were hospitalized at the Indian Air Force’s air show held at Marina Beach, Chennai, on Sunday. The overwhelming crowd, which had gathered to witness the event, faced extreme conditions leading to dehydration and exhaustion.

Causes of Death and Hospitalizations

Reports indicate that the deaths were primarily attributed to dehydration and extreme exhaustion, as attendees endured the scorching sun for two to three hours. The event, which began at 11 am and concluded at 1 pm, drew thousands to the lengthy shoreline, where many sought refuge under umbrellas.

A senior police official confirmed that one individual died on the beachfront while the others succumbed in nearby areas. “More than 50 people are in various hospitals after they complained of dehydration and exhaustion,” revealed a government official, who wished to remain anonymous.

Frustrations Over Poor Crowd and Traffic Management

Attendees expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the poor crowd control and inadequate traffic management that contributed to significant congestion throughout the city. Following the event, the rush to exit led to chaos, stranding many on roads, outside railway stations, and metro stations. Reports of individuals fainting due to exhaustion emerged, with emergency personnel working tirelessly to provide care and transport to medical facilities.

Arterial roads near the beach were congested, while local trains, including MRTS and Metro services, were overcrowded. Passengers at the bus stop at Anna Square were seen struggling to board buses, and traffic restrictions forced many to walk considerable distances to reach their destinations.

Political Blame Game

In the aftermath of this tragedy, political tensions have risen. State Health Minister M. Subramanian defended the state’s preparedness, stating that two health teams, along with 40 ambulances and paramedic personnel, were present at the venue. However, these assurances have not quelled public outcry over the perceived inadequacies of the emergency measures.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai criticized the DMK government for failing to provide necessary safety measures and adequate transportation for the thousands who attended the air show. “I was shocked to hear that five people died due to crowding and more than 200 people were injured during the IAF Air Show at Chennai Marina Beach. The DMK government has not taken care of the public’s safety by providing basic facilities and adequate transport arrangements,” he stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

As the community mourns the loss of life and grapples with the consequences of the event, questions about safety protocols and crowd management measures remain at the forefront of public discourse. Authorities are under scrutiny as they face calls for a thorough investigation into the tragic incident.

</excerpt>

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has strongly criticised Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, calling her handling of a recent incident “shameful.” The controversy arose after the owner of Sri Annapoorna restaurant in Coimbatore, during an event attended by Sitharaman, humorously commented on the varying GST rates for food items. Referring to the GST levied on cream buns, he suggested simplifying the tax structure. His remarks were well-received by the audience but later sparked controversy when a video circulated showing the hotelier apologising to Sitharaman.

Stalin condemned the minister’s response, stating the restaurant owner’s request for GST simplification was reasonable. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan also weighed in, accusing the government of ignoring public sentiment and pressuring the hotelier to apologise. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi used the incident to criticise the government, advocating for a simplified GST system with a single tax rate, while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called the episode an example of BJP’s “arrogance of power.”

BJP Tamil Nadu leader K Annamalai apologised for making the private exchange between the hotelier and Sitharaman public, expressing regret for the breach of privacy and asking for the matter to be laid to rest.

</excerpt>

The Congress on Wednesday questioned why it took the Centre more than four years to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and one month ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking to ANI during the Maharastra leg of the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, said that granting citizenship based on religion is against the constitution.

“We are raising the issues of farmers, youth, women & labourers. What are BJP’s issues? What are PM Modi’s issues? He does not talk about the 10 years of injustice…They have only one weapon in this election, & that is polarization…The CAA rule is made after 4 years and 3 months…Now that only a month is left for the elections, they are giving a dose of polarization…”

“He (PM Modi) is showing the dream of Viksit Bharat (developed India) and Amrit Kaal,” the Congress leader said, taking a dig at PM.

Soon after the implementation of the CAA rules, INDIA bloc leaders hit out at the Modi government and expressed opposition.

“Tamil Nadu & West Bengal governments have said (CAA will not be implemented). We were against CAA because giving citizenship based on religion is against the Constitution. This has been challenged in the Supreme Court as well…Why did it take them 4 years and 3 months to implement it?…,” the Congress MP said.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit out at the Modi government on the CAA notification and alleged that this was just a gimmick ahead of the general elections and as soon as anyone applies for citizenship under CAA the person will fall under the “illegal migrants”.

“Central Government implemented CAA yesterday, I am doubtful of its legality. There is no clarity from the Government over this. This is just a gimmick ahead of the elections. In 2019, names of 13 Lakh Hindu Bengalis, out of the total 19 Lakh, were removed from the list in Assam in the name of NRC. Several people died by suicide,” she said.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) only “creates division” and would not be implemented in the southern Indian state.”The BJP government’s divisive agenda has weaponised the Citizenship Act, turning it from a beacon of humanity to a tool of discrimination based on religion and race through the enactment of CAA. By betraying Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamils, they sowed seeds of division,” Stalin said in a statement on X.”

On March 11, the Union Home Ministry notified the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), days ahead of the announcement of the Lok Sabha election schedule.
The CAA rules, introduced by the Narendra Modi government and passed by Parliament in 2019, aim to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants–including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians–who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

According to Radhakrishnan, officials failed to notice an error made by the advertisement’s designers.

He informed ANI on Thursday that there was a slight error in the newspaper ad we provided on the construction of a rocket launch pad in the Kulasekarapatnam area.

He said, “Those who designed the advertisement made a mistake that we were unaware of, which was the image of the Chinese flag in the advertisement welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

At a rally in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi said that the DMK government had placed China’s label to claim “false credit” for ISRO’s facility in the state.

“DMK is a party that puts in no effort but advances to claim unjustified credit. These folks affix their stickers to our designs. Now that they’ve gone too far, they’ve added China’s label to claim ownership of the ISRO launch pad in Tamil Nadu,” he had previously stated.

</excerpt>

A review meeting regarding preparations for the impending cyclone “Michaung” was held on Friday by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin with twelve district collectors and officials.
North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal residents are expected to face extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.4 mm) on December 3 and heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 4, according to an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

It stated that by December 2 the depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to deepen into a cyclonic storm over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, and by December 3 it is expected to continue to intensify. By December 4 afternoon, it would reach the coasts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh.
According to the Chief Minister, the state should expect a lot of rain during the cyclonic storm.

He advised the concerned departments to take preventative action and suggested that those who would be affected be relocated to relief camps.
He stated that district collectors are responsible for securing food, electricity, and other necessities.
According to the Chief Minister, action needs to be taken to stop any electrical leaks. According to him, trees that fall as a result of a cyclone should be removed as soon as possible.
Stalin emphasized the importance of keeping food centers and emergency rooms stocked in order to provide aid to those in need.

</excerpt>

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has come to the defense of his son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, who recently faced controversy over his remarks about the discriminatory principles associated with Sanatan Dharma. In a statement issued on Thursday, CM Stalin clarified that Udhayanidhi’s comments were not intended to offend any religious beliefs but rather aimed at highlighting issues of discrimination against scheduled castes, tribals, and women.

Stalin accused pro-BJP forces of creating a “false narrative” against Udhayanidhi, who serves as the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs in the Tamil Nadu government. He asserted that the intention behind his son’s comments was to shed light on oppressive principles within Sanatan Dharma, emphasizing that there was no call for the “genocide” of people with Sanatan thoughts, as alleged by some.

“He (Udhayanidhi) expressed his views on Sanatan principles that discriminate against scheduled castes, tribals, and women, with no intention to offend any religion or religious beliefs. Pro-BJP forces are unable to tolerate his stance against oppressive principles and have spread a false narrative, alleging that ‘Udhayanidhi called for the genocide of people with Sanatan thoughts,'” Stalin said in his statement.

Stalin went on to criticize the social media campaigns initiated by the BJP, which he claimed had widely circulated the falsehood that Udhayanidhi had advocated for the eradication of Sanatan Dharma. He clarified that his son never used the word “genocide” in either Tamil or English while making his remarks.

The controversy began when BJP IT department head Amit Malviya took to social media, claiming that Udhayanidhi’s statement, “Sanatana Dharma should be eradicated,” amounted to a call for the “genocide” of the 80 percent of the population that follows it.

</excerpt>

Edappadi K Palaniswami, the general secretary of the AIADMK, lambasted MK Stalin on Tuesday for deaths allegedly caused by drinking spurious alcohol and demanded that the chief minister step down.

“There has been no stringent action against those selling spurious liquor. DMK members themselves are selling spurious liquor. CM MK Stalin must take responsibility for recent spurious liquor-related deaths and should resign,” Palaniswami said addressing a press conference here. Several persons who have consumed the spurious liquor are battling for their lives in hospital , he said adding that such incidents are sad and painful.
“Stalin is a puppet CM who doesn’t care about the welfare of the people of the state,” the AIADMK leader said.

In Chengalpattu, there were five fatalities, while 13 people had died and over 50 had been negatively impacted in the village of Marakkanam from consuming fake alcohol. “Such occurrences are extremely heartbreaking and distressing,” he said. “DMK M K Stalin government hasn’t established any social welfare programmes in two years.

Palaniswami alleged, “During the AIADMK government everything was controlled. We took strict action against spurious liquor smuggling.”
“Now after this incident they (DMK government has acted). This shows the police knows the details of the spurious liquor sellers but only took action after the unfortunate incident. They have registered 2000 cases,” he alleged adding that the chief minister should take responsibility and resign.

Police said the total number of people who died after a group of people on Saturday evening consumed illicit liquor in the Ekkiyarkuppam fishing hamlet of Marakkanam in the district had gone up to 13.The deceased have been identified as Shankar, Suresh, Dharanivel, Rajamoorthy, Vijayan, Mannakatti, Malarvizli, Abhiragam, Kesava Velu, Shankar, Vijayan, Raja Velu and Sarath Kumar.

Earlier this month, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, while interacting with the civil services aspirants, explained the role of the Governor in the Constitution and said that he has the option to give assent or withhold the Bill passed by the Assembly, and added that the latter means the “Bill is dead”. The Governor said that “withholding” is a “decent language” used for the Bill to get rejected. Ravi said that the responsibility of the Governor is defined by the Constitution which is to protect the Constitution.
He also said that the Governor looks into the Bill if it does not “transgress the Consitutional limit” and the state government does not “exceed its competence”.
Last month, CM Stalin slammed Governor Ravi after it returned the online gambling prohibition Bill four months after the State legislature passed it. In addition, the Chief Minister stated, “This demonstrates not only the Governor’s dereliction of duty, but also total obstruction. If we keep putting pressure on the Governor, for example, by asking for clarification, and he returns the bill, he will believe his responsibility is over.”
P Chidambaram, a Congress veteran and former finance minister, also slammed Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s remark, saying it means “Parliamentary Democracy is dead.”

Amid a standoff with the government Governor, RN Ravi walked out of the assembly before the national anthem was played.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister M K Stalin moved a resolution on Monday in which Stalin said that the government which has prepared the customary speech for the first day of the House’s winter session will go on record.

Against Governor Ravi the Congress, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and DMK MLAs started raising slogans and said, “don’t impose BJP, RSS ideology.”

Moreover, Governor RN Ravi was accused of toeing the BJP’s ideological position and said, “This is not Nagaland, this is proud Tamil Nadu.”

Amid the uproar, Governor Ravi continued his address. In Tamil Nadu, a tussle has been witnessed between the DMK regime and the Raj Bhavan over several bills which are pending with the Governor. At Raj Bhavan, around 21 Bills are pending as of December 2022.

Earlier on Wednesday a controversy was sparked by Governor Ravi who said, “Unfortunately in Tamil Nadu, there has been regressive politics that we are Dravidians, and by virtue of the Constitution, we have been brought together. The entire effort has been created in half a century to reinforce this narrative that we are not part of the nation, but an integral part of the nation. And even a different kind of narrative has been created. Everything applicable for the whole of the country, Tamil Nadu will say no.”

“It has become a habit. So many theses have been written–all false and poor fiction. This must be broken. Truth must prevail. In fact, Tamil Nadu is the land that holds the soul of Bharat. It is the identity of Bharat. In fact, Thamizhagam would be the more appropriate word to call it,” the Governor said.

However, Governor Ravi’s remarks were criticized by DMK Treasurer and MP TR Balu who said, “Governor RN Ravi on a daily basis passes some controversial comments to create confusion, separation, and conflict. The governor said ‘People have been cheated during 50 years of Dravidian politics’. It is highly condemnable as he should say this from BJP State headquarters Kamalalayam and not from Raj Bhavan.”

Amid cyclonic storms, Mandous heavy rainfall and strong winds were witnessed by Chennai and several other parts of Tamil Nadu.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) cyclonic storm, Mandous is weakening in strength after completing its landfall process late on Friday night.

In the nearby Chengalpattu district, waterlogging and squally winds uprooting trees were seen.

Earlier on Friday Cyclonic Mandous made landfall off Mamallapuram influencing moderate to heavy rainfall in coastal Tamil Nadu where MMDA Colony in Chennai’s Arumbakkam was seen waterlogged.

S Balachandran, DDGM, RMC Chennai, said, “Cyclone Mandous crossed the coast and is in deep depression and its strength is weakening. It is moving towards the Northwest direction so areas in northwest districts will witness strong winds of 55-65 kmph which will further decrease by evening to 30-40 kmph.”

Several parts of Chennai are facing heavy rainfall and strong winds after Cyclone Mandous made landfall off Mamallapuram.

Meanwhile, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) urged people to avoid going out in the wake of Cyclone Mandous.

Moreover, in three hours almost 65 trees fell and motor pumps are being used to remove water stagnation.

However, National Disaster Response Force personnel are on standby since Saturday, and CM MK Stalin requested people to take precautionary measures.

“The government has taken all the precautionary measures and the officers are regularly monitoring the situation,” Stalin said.

Stalin further said, “Whatever the situation may be Government will ensure the protection of the people. District wise the monitoring of the cyclone has also been deployed.”

Furthermore, amid the cyclone’s severity, CM Stalin also visited and inspected the state emergency operation center.

M K Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu said that the union and state governments are working hard to execute family planning and healthcare programmes. Stalin on Sunday urged couples to restrict the number of children they may have to one or two.

Stalin was speaking at a large wedding in Chennai that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department of Tamil Nadu had organised (HR&CE). Up to 31 couples were wed in Chennai, and 217 were wedded throughout the state.

“I have a request to the newly married couples. Stop with one or two children that you may have,” Stalin said. “Union and state governments are spending a lot on family planning and conducting awareness campaigns…This is for the benefit of the nation and families.”

In jest, the chief minister also said that he saw an advertisement that wondered why we need a child when we ourselves are children.

Stalin’s statement comes at a time when the BJP-led union government has said earlier this year that no law is needed to restrict couples from having more children as a population control measure as public awareness campaigns were working well.

The Rajya Sabha was informed in July by Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar that the government aims to stabilise the population by 2045 through its ongoing efforts. However, some BJP leaders, including Union Minister Giriraj Singh and MP Ravi Kishan, have been calling for legislation for population control.

As a fundamental principle of social justice and the Dravidian model, Stalin pushed the spouses to name their children in Tamil and uphold equality in their families. He also praised HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu’s efforts, claiming that a few groups are attempting to exploit religion as a political tool in the state.

“Some people are unable to tolerate the various welfare measures taken by the HR&CE department. So they are trying to malign the DMK government,” Stalin said. “Whether it is a monarchy or democracy, temples are for the people. Temples are not anyone’s personal property. It was only to change that, the (HR&CE) department was created during the Justice Party rule.”

Stalin recalled the contributions made by his father and former chief minister M Karunanidhi for temples. “Following him, today Sekar Babu is running the department true to our governance of the Dravidian model,” the chief minister said. “Those who do not have any issue to do politics are using religion, and if we ask them for evidence, they have none.”

RP Ravichandran remarked that time will judge them as “innocents” in response to his release from prison in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi after more than three decades. After leaving jail on Saturday, he made the comments.

Ravichandran – who along with five other convicts, including Nalini Sriharan, were released from prison, said that the people of north India should see them as “victims instead of terrorists or killers”.

“Time and power determine who is a terrorist or a freedom fighter, but time will judge us as innocent, even if we bear the blame for being terrorists,” he said.

In August, Nalini and Ravichandran petitioned the Supreme Court for early release. Since December 2021, both of them have been on parole. Their action followed the apex court’s May 18 decision to give bail to AG Perarivalan, another assassination case accused. In order to release Perarivalan at the time due to his bad health and good behaviour, the SC had invoked the extraordinary powers granted to it by Article 142 of the Constitution.

The top court freed the remaining six convicts in the case on Friday (November 11), including Nalini and Ravichandran. Its decision was consistent with the justifications given by the court for Perarivalan’s release.

Santhan, Ravichandran, Robert Payas, Perarivalan, Nalini, Murugan alias Sriharan, Santhan, and S. Jayakumar were all detained in 1991. Four of them are Sri Lankan nationals, including Sriharan, Nalini’s spouse.

Nalini, the longest-serving female prisoner in the nation, thanked the people of Tamil Nadu on Saturday for their support over the course of 32 years. She remarked, “I thank the state and Union government.”

Nalini further stated that she is not planning to meet anyone from the Gandhi family, stressing “there is no possibility” of that. “I want to be with my family…I will go wherever my husband goes. We were separated for 32 years. Our family kept waiting for us,” she said.

The Tamil Nadu government had previously advocated for the convicts’ early release, and after the SC’s ruling on Friday, chief minister MK Stalin said he “welcomed” the verdict.

Gandhi was killed by a woman suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), an organisation with headquarters in Sri Lanka, on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, during an election campaign. The development was largely attributed to his choice to send over 1,000 Indian military to Sri Lanka in 1987 in order to disarm Tamil militants before later pulling them out.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted the Centre’s efforts towards rural development and said the gap between urban and rural India is bridging.

The 36th Convocation Ceremony of Gandhigram Rural Institute in Dindigul was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

“Gandhian values are becoming increasingly relevant. Whether it is about ending conflicts or the climate crisis, Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas have the answers to many of today’s challenges,” PM Modi said while addressing the convocation ceremony.

Talking about Gandhigram PM Modi said, Mahatma Gandhi, himself inaugurated which reflects the spirit of Gandhiji’s ideas of rural development.

PM Modi further said, “Mahatma Gandhi wanted villages to become self-reliant and our vision of rural development draws inspiration from Gandhi. There can be a difference, but not a disparity, between urban and rural lifestyles. Today, the nation is working to end the divide.”

“Ensuring proper sanitation was a great concern for Gandhiji. In this direction, our government provided complete rural sanitation coverage, over 6 crore tap water connections, and over 2.5 crore electricity connections. Rural roads are being developed, and development is reaching the doorsteps of people,” PM Modi said.

Meanwhile, PM Modi also talked about Mahatma Gandhi who used to love Khadi, and how much it was close to his heart.

Moreover, over 300 percent of the sale of Khadi has increased in the last three years.

Talking about sustainable agriculture for the future of rural areas PM Modi said, “There is great enthusiasm for natural farming as it reduces the country’s dependence on fertilizer imports. It is also good both for soil and human health.”

However, an honorary doctorate was also presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to music maestro Ilayaraja.

Furthermore, the ceremony was attended by MK Stalin, Governor RN Ravi, and other dignitaries.

</excerpt>

MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday to complain about “the aggressive attempts of the Union government” to impose Hindi. He claimed that these efforts were “impractical and divisive in nature” and put non-Hindi speakers in a very difficult situation in many ways.

A parliamentary commission has proposed that Hindi be used as the primary language of instruction in technical and non-technical higher education institutions, such as the IITs, in Hindi-speaking states and the appropriate regional languages in other regions of the nation. The group also suggested that Hindi be added to the list of UN-recognized languages.

Stalin recently advised the Centre to avoid starting a new “language war by imposing” Hindi.

“The number of people speaking languages other than Hindi is numerically more than Hindi-speaking people in the Indian Union. I’m sure you would appreciate that every language has its own speciality with its uniqueness and linguistic culture,” Stalin said in the letter.

“The approach of the Union government should be to include all languages, including Tamil, in the 8th Schedule, keeping in view scientific development and technological facilities, promoting all languages and keeping open avenues of progress in terms of education and employment equal to speakers of all languages,” the Tamil Nadu chief minister added.

Stalin further asked that the various measures to impose Hindi that were suggested in the report not be pursued and that the glorious torch of Indian unification be kept blazing at all times.

The DMK’s youth wing secretary, and Stalin’s son, Udayanidhi Stalin, issued a warning on Saturday, saying that if Hindi was imposed on the state, the party would demonstrate in Delhi against the BJP-led government.

The Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni member warned that the party would not watch helplessly as the Modi-led Union government ignored the concerns of the populace as he led a large demonstration in front of Chennai’s iconic Valluvar Kottam.
