India’s First ‘Gen Beta’ Baby Born In Mizoram’s Aizawl

As the year 2025 ushered in the ‘Generation Beta’, India welcomed its first baby of this generation on New Year’s Day, January 1, in Mizoram’s Aizawl.

According to All India Radio News, the baby boy, named Frankie Remruatdika Zadeng, was born at 12:03 am at Durtlang’s Synod Hospital in Aizawl, marking the arrival of the first birth of Generation Beta.

The baby weighed 3.12 kg at birth and is in good health, with no complications, as confirmed by Sister Lalchhuanawmi of the hospital’s Lawmna Ward.

As reported by Akashvani News Aizawl, Frankie is the newest member of his family, which includes his older sister, mother Ramzirmawii, and father ZD Remruatsanga. The family resides in Aizawl’s Khatla East area.

The mother expressed her joy at giving birth to the nation’s first Beta baby. The term ‘Gen Beta’ was coined by futurist Mark McCrindle to describe children born between 2025 and 2039. McCrindle predicts that by 2035, Gen Beta will make up 16 percent of the global population.

In a blog post, McCrindle explained that these children will be the offspring of Gen Ys (millennials) and older Gen Zs. Many Gen Beta babies will live to witness the 22nd century.

The post further explained the choice of the Greek alphabet to name the last generation as Alpha and the new generation as Beta. This was done “to signify not just new generations, but the first generations that will be shaped by an entirely different world.”

McCrindle’s site also emphasized that Gen Beta represents a pivotal chapter in the evolving world. He explained that Gen Beta will live in a world with a seamless blend of the digital and physical, where “AI (artificial intelligence) and automation are fully embedded in everyday life, from education and workplaces to healthcare and entertainment.”

Gen Beta, McCrindle concluded, “will grow up in a world shaped by breakthroughs in technology, evolving social norms, and an increasing focus on sustainability and global citizenship.”

Mizoram: NIA Cracks Down On Trans-Border Arms Trade, Arrests Three

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested three individuals from Mizoram in connection with a trans-border arms and ammunition trafficking case, the agency announced on Saturday.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Lalrinchhunga, Vanlaldailova, and Lalmuanpuia. According to NIA officials, the arrests followed extensive searches conducted at six locations across Mizoram.

The three suspects were found to be linked to previously arrested individuals and suspects, actively participating in a network trafficking explosives, weapons, and ammunition.

During the searches, the NIA seized a significant cache of weapons, ammunition, explosives, equipment for manufacturing weapons, digital devices, and other incriminating materials. These operations are part of the agency’s ongoing investigation into the case, registered in New Delhi on December 26, 2023, under relevant sections of the IPC, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Explosive Substances Act of 1908, and the Arms Act.

The investigation began following intelligence inputs suggesting that certain entities in Mizoram were running a syndicate involved in the illegal trafficking of arms, ammunition, and explosives in the northeastern region.

Earlier, in July and November 2024, the NIA had filed chargesheets against accused individuals Lalngaihawma and Solomona Hminga at Lalmithanga in connection with the case.

The agency continues its efforts to uncover the broader conspiracy behind the arms and explosives trafficking network in Mizoram and other northeastern states.

At least 27 people were killed on Tuesday in Mizoram’s Aizawl district due to landslides caused by Cyclone Remal.

Swami Vivekananda U-20 Men’s NFC Semi-Finals: Mizoram Beat Assam with 5-1

Mizoram secured the final semi-final spot in the Swami Vivekananda U-20 Men’s National Football Championship by defeating Assam 5-1 at the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Ground on Saturday, May 18, 2024. They held a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Following this commanding win, Mizoram is poised to take on Delhi, who advanced past Kerala in a penalty shootout during the third quarter-final. The upcoming match is scheduled for Monday, May 20, 2024, at the same venue. In the other semi-final on the same day, Karnataka will face Manipur at 7:30 AM IST.

Mizoram, displaying impressive form and having scored 15 goals in the group stage, wasted no time settling in as they took the lead through Lalremtluanga’s free kick in just the second minute. Lalremtluanga executed a flawless strike from the left flank, and despite Assam’s goalkeeper Bikiron Dhekial Phukon’s effort to punch it away, the rebound found its way into the back of the net.

However, Assam quickly responded with the equalizer in the 18th minute. Abhinash Boro delivered a precise cross from the right, finding Uttam Limboo perfectly positioned in the center of the box. With a flawless one-touch shot, Limboo leveled the score at 1-1.

From that point on, it was all Mizoram dominating the game. They regained the lead in the 43rd minute when Emanuel Lalhruaizela unleashed a powerful strike from just outside the box, finding the back of the net. It was a remarkable left-footed volley that left the goalkeeper helpless. Lalhruaizela was later awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.

After the break, Mizoram continued to assert their dominance over the match. In the 50th minute, Lalro Thlanga extended Mizoram’s lead to 3-1 with a well-placed shot. Just four minutes later, Lalthankima added another goal with a precise right-footed strike that found the left corner of the net.

Lalremtluanga secured his second goal of the match and Mizoram’s fifth in the 84th minute, capitalizing on a cross from the right to find the target.

Assam Rifles Seized 100 bags of Areca Nuts, Worth Rs 56 Lakh in Mizoram

In ongoing effort against smuggling, the Assam Rifles seized 100 bags of areca nuts, each weighing 80 kg, valued at Rs 56 lakh and totaling 8000 kilograms, in Ruantlang, Champhai district, according to officials on Saturday.

An official statement revealed that, following precise information, a joint operation was conducted by the Assam Rifles and the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai on Friday. The entire batch of areca nuts was subsequently turned over to the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai for further legal action.

The persistent smuggling of contraband items remains a significant concern for Mizoram. The Assam Rifles, aptly known as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’, persist in their anti-smuggling campaigns and have intensified their operations to apprehend the masterminds behind contraband trafficking in Mizoram.

The previous day, the Assam Rifles carried out two distinct operations in Aizawl and Hnahlan, Mizoram, seizing heroin valued at Rs 11 crore. Additionally, the operation led to the detention of two Myanmar nationals, aged 50 and 53.

Illicit liquor, drugs worth Rs 6 crore seized by Mizoram police ahead of Lok Sabha polls

Mizoram police recently conducted a large-scale operation against illicit liquor and drugs across the state, resulting in the seizure of drugs and illicit liquor valued at over Rs 6 crore. Additionally, 94 individuals were arrested in connection with these activities.

Neihchungnunga, CPRO of Mizoram police, emphasized the ongoing efforts of the police force in combating illicit liquor and drugs. He stated, “Seizure of local made liquor (LML), illicit liquor being smuggled to Mizoram from outside and drugs have been made since the announcement of Lok Sabha election on 16th March 2024 which shows high demand of liquor and drugs in the state.”

As part of the state-wide drive, Mizoram Police seized over 4773 litres of Local Made Liquor (LML) worth Rs. 23,28,000, 2577 litres of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs. 41,23,200, 66 litres of BEDC worth Rs. 49,500, and 636 cans of Beer worth Rs. 3,18,000. Additionally, about 13,340 litres of fermented rice worth Rs. 46,69,000 were destroyed during the period from 16th March 2024 to 8th April 2024. This operation resulted in the registration of 51 cases at Police Stations and the arrest of 61 accused persons.

Furthermore, Neihchungnunga reported, “5.513 kg of Heroin worth Rs. 1,65,39,000, 26.469 kg of Methamphetamine worth Rs. 3,44,09,700 and 23.085 kg of Ganja worth Rs. 1,15,425 were also seized during the same period. 25 cases were registered at Police Stations and 33 accused persons were arrested in these cases.”

The CPRO of Mizoram police commended the efforts of the police force in different districts for their role in controlling alcohol and drugs, stating, “We really appreciate the role played by Mizoram police in different districts in controlling alcohol and drugs through various means. These achievements are possible with their commitment and dedication to uphold laws, protect public safety and reduce the harm associated with drugs and alcohol abuse within communities.”

Mizoram Urgently Appeals to Centre as Myanmar Soldiers Seek Refuge in India

As conflict escalates between rebel forces and the junta-regime in Myanmar, hundreds of Myanmar Army personnel are reportedly seeking refuge in India, specifically in Mizoram. The Mizoram government has reached out to the central government, urging swift action to repatriate the soldiers who have crossed the border.

Approximately 600 Myanmar Army soldiers have entered India, taking shelter in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district after their camps were seized by Arakan Army (AA) militants in the western Myanmar state of Rakhine. The soldiers are currently housed in an Assam Rifles camp in Mizoram, according to government sources.

In response to the urgent situation, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma engaged in talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the plenary session of the Northeastern Council meeting in Shillong. Mizoram emphasized the need for a prompt repatriation of the Myanmar Army personnel seeking refuge within the state, expressing concerns about the potential impact on regional stability.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma, addressing reporters after the session, explained the humanitarian assistance provided to those fleeing Myanmar. “People are fleeing from Myanmar to our country for shelter, and we are helping them on humanitarian grounds. Soldiers of Myanmar keep coming, seeking shelter, and earlier we used to send them back by air. Around 450 army personnel were sent back,” he stated.

Myanmar’s generals are currently facing significant challenges as ethnic minority forces launched a coordinated offensive in late October, capturing towns and military posts, and prompting Myanmar Army soldiers to seek refuge in neighboring countries, including India.

Assam Rifles Bust Rs 2.38 Crore Cigarette Smuggling Operation in Mizoram

Assam Rifles successfully seized foreign-origin cigarettes valued at Rs 2.38 crore in the general vicinity of World Bank Road Zokhawthar in Champhai district, as per an official statement. Acting on specific information, the operation was conducted collaboratively by Assam Rifles and representatives from the Customs Preventive Force of Champhai in Zokhawthar.

According to an official press release from HQ IGAR (EAST), “In another achievement in its fight against smuggling, Assam Rifles, in conjunction with Customs Preventive Force Champhai, intercepted 109 cases of foreign-origin cigarettes worth Rs 2.38 crore in the general area of World Bank Road Zokhawthar, Champhai district, on December 23.” The entire shipment of foreign-made cigarettes was handed over to Customs Preventive Force Champhai for further legal proceedings.

Addressing the issue of Myanmar refugees in Mizoram, Lalduhoma affirmed their Indian citizenship status. “They are all Indian citizens. I’ll discuss this with the Home Minister during my Delhi visit. He has assured full cooperation,” Lalduhoma mentioned.

Ahead of the swearing-in, he thanked the populace for their support and announced the immediate goals of his administration. “After the ceremony, I’ll hold a press conference to announce our top priorities,” he said.

According to the results announced on December 4, the ZPM won a landslide victory, claiming 27 of Mizoram’s 40 assembly constituencies.

In celebration of their win, ZPM held a special worship service, with newly elected MLA Baryl Vanneihsangi crediting women in society for her victory. “I dedicate this win to every woman in our society and community,” she proclaimed.

Mizoram: ZPM set to form government in state

A coalition of six parties called the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is moving toward taking control of Mizoram’s governance on its own. With 26 out of 40 seats, the ZPM was leading, according to Election Commission trends as of 12 p.m. On Monday, as the vote-counting process continued, ZPM has so far secured seven victories.
The Mizo National Front (MNF) is currently in second place with 11 seats, according to the Indian Election Commission.
The ZPM has selected the following seats and candidates: Kolasib- Lal Famikima, Tawi-Prof. Lalnilawma, Aizawl West-I-TBC Lalvenchhunga, Aizawl West-II- Lalnghinglova Hmar, Tuichang- W Chhuanawma, Hanturzo-LALMUANPUIA PUNTE, and South Tuipui- Jeje Lalpekhlua.

ZPM’s triumphs have been against prominent leaders of the MNF, including two sitting ministers, with Lalnghinglova Hmar defeating state cabinet minister Lalruatkima and W. Chhuanawma overcoming incumbent Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia in Tuichang.
The ZPM’s Lalnghinglova Hmar brought in the party’s second win for the day from the Aizawl West-II constituency. He registered 10398 votes and won with a margin of 4819.

Mizoram Polls: As the Mizoram Legislative Assembly elections conclude, exit polls hint at a tight race, with the six-party alliance Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM) leading, as per Jan Ki Baat’s projections. The exit poll suggests ZPM securing 15–25 seats in the 60-member Assembly, closely trailed by the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, expected to garner 10–14 seats. The Congress lags with a projection of 5–9 seats, while the BJP is predicted to secure 0–2 seats.

The CNX exit poll backs up these predictions, with ZPM leading with 12-16 seats, MNF close behind with 14-18 seats, Congress with 8-10 seats, and the BJP expected to secure 0-2 seats.

In the previous Mizoram Legislative Assembly elections held on November 28, 2018, the Mizo National Front (MNF) emerged victorious, and Zoramthanga assumed office as the Chief Minister.

Mizoram’s political landscape is marked by the prominence of regional parties, with MNF facing a dual challenge from the six-party alliance ZPM and the Congress as it endeavours to retain power. In the 2018 elections, the BJP’s NDA ally MNF clinched a significant victory with 26 seats, while the BJP, a minor player in the regional alliance, secured just one seat.

Mizoram reports a higher female voter turnout this year, with 81.25% of female voters participating and 80.04% of male voters. Overall voter turnout in the state is 80.66%.

As anticipation grows for the December 3 election results, the outcome will have implications for Mizoram’s political dynamics as well as the broader regional political scenario. The closely contested race between ZPM, MNF, and other candidates adds a layer of intrigue to the electoral narrative, with Mizoram assembly results set to be announced alongside the results of four other states.

Mizoram Opens Doors to Thousands Escaping Myanmar Airstrikes

In the wake of a recent airstrike by the Myanmar army along the Indo-Myanmar border, around 5,000 Myanmar nationals have sought refuge in Mizoram’s Champhai district, particularly in the Zokhawthar area. The fleeing families, including women and children, have entered India seeking safety and protection.

The district administration, along with NGOs, the Young Mizo Association (YMA), and the Village Council, has mobilized efforts to provide essential support to the Myanmar refugees. Makeshift tents have been set up in the Zokhawthar area to accommodate the influx, and relief and refugee camps, numbering around 4-5, have been established to cater to the growing population.

Leaders of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) in Zokhawthar, including F Biaktinsanga, the Financial Secretary, estimate that between 5,000 to 6,000 people have sought refuge in India from Myanmar. NGOs and the district administration are actively assisting these individuals by providing vital necessities such as food, clothing, and medicines.

“We care about them, and whatever problem they have, we get help from the Young Mizo Association (YMA). Many children are here, and some women are also here. We provide daal, cerelac, and milk for the children and some vitamins. We also provide diapers and clothes for children because they didn’t take anything with them when they fled their country,” stated F. Biaktinsanga, YMA Zokhawthar Financial Secretary.

Mal Sawm Par, a Myanmar national who arrived in Zokhawthar two years ago, shared his experiences of leaving behind a burned-down village. Despite the challenges, he expressed gratitude for the support received from the local community, including provisions of food, clothing, and medical care.

In a recent development, the People’s Defence Force (PDF) of Myanmar attacked and captured two Myanmar Army posts, leading to 39 Myanmar Army personnel seeking refuge in Mizoram. The total number of surrendered Myanmar Army personnel now stands at 42. The situation along the border remains tense, with concerns about potential airstrikes by the Myanmar Army, although the region is currently calm.

The Mizoram Inspector-General of Police (IGP) (Headquarters), Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, provided updates, stating that more than 5,000 people have taken refuge in two border villages. The Mizoram Police have been actively involved in managing the situation and providing assistance to those affected.

Over 5,000 Myanmar Nationals Seek Asylum in Mizoram Amid Fresh Violence

In a rapidly escalating crisis, over 5,000 Myanmar nationals have crossed into Mizoram, India, following an airstrike by the Myanmar army in its Chin state on Monday. Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, Inspector General of Police, Mizoram Police, confirmed the influx, revealing that many refugees are injured, with about 20 casualties reported. The injured are receiving treatment in Champhai, and eight have been moved to Aizawl for further medical care.

Mizoram Police disclosed that the situation is relatively calm on the ground, but concerns persist about potential further airstrikes. The airstrike by the Myanmar army was reportedly in retaliation for an attack by the People’s Defence Force (PDF) on military bases near the Indian border.

In a significant development, 42 Myanmar army personnel surrendered to Mizoram Police and have been handed over to the central force, Assam Rifles, with their fate pending a decision by the Indian government. Local Mizoram non-governmental organizations are providing care for the injured refugees.

This crisis adds to the existing refugee population in Mizoram, which has seen thousands seeking shelter since 2021. The Mizos and the Chin community share ethnic ties, intensifying the impact of Myanmar’s military junta facing its most significant challenge since the 2021 coup.

ECI orders Re-polling in Muallungthu, Mizoram

The Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered a re-poll for the Muallungthu polling station in Mizoram’s Aizawl South 3 Assembly Constituency today. The re-election, which took place at 7 a.m., involved 1084 voters in the constituency. The ECI ordered re-polling after voting personnel failed to clear mock polls before the November 7 assembly elections.

In the recent single-phase elections for 40 assembly seats in Mizoram, the state witnessed a voter turnout of 78.40 percent. In the 2018 Assembly elections, the Mizo National Front (MNF) secured 26 seats with a vote share of 37.8 percent, leading to the displacement of the Congress from power.

The Mizo National Front, Indian National Congress, and Zoram People’s Movement were among the major political parties that ran candidates for all 40 seats. In addition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ran for 23 seats. The results of the re-election in Muallungthu will be factored into the state’s final assembly results.

Chhattisgarh registers 59.19 pc voter turnout for 20 seats, Mizoram sees 69.86 pc polling till 3 pm

Election Commission data as of 3 pm shows that Mizoram recorded 69.86 percent of voters cast ballots, while in Chhattisgarh, 59.19 percent of voters cast ballots in the state’s 20 assembly seats during the first phase of voting. Voter turnout was 61.83 percent in the Bhanupratappur assembly constituency in Chhattisgarh, 68 percent in Kanker, 73 percent in Mohla-Manpur, 65.67 percent in Antagarh, and 60.11 percent in Keshkal, according to poll panel data. Ten seats—Mohla-Manpur, Antagarh, Bhanupratappur, Kanker, Keshkal, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur, and Konta—were up for voting, and it began at seven in the morning.

According to poll panel data, Antagarh saw polling percentage of 65.67, Bhanupratappur 61.83 per cent, Kanker 68 per cent, Keshkal 60.11 per cent, Kondagaon 69.03 per cent, Narayanpur 53.55 per cent, Dantewada 51.9 per cent, Bijapur 30 per cent and Konta 50.12.
Voting for the remaining assembly constituencies – Pandaria, Kawardha, Khairagarh, Dongargarh, Rajnandgaon, Dongargaon, Khujji, Bastar, Jagdalpur, and Chitrakote began at 8 am.

Mizoram records 12.80% voter turnout by 9 am

In a significant electoral development, Mizoram has witnessed a robust voter turnout of 12.80% as of 9 a.m., following the commencement of voting in the Northeastern state at 7 a.m., according to the Election Commission of India.

The state is currently engaged in the electoral process to choose its 40-member state assembly, with voting scheduled to continue until 3 p.m. The crucial counting of votes is set to take place on December 3.

Mizoram, known for its high literacy rate, has always had strong voter turnout. The state had an unprecedented 84.9% voter turnout in the 2018 elections, with 6,28,608 ballots cast.

Additionally, Mizoram is the only poll-bound state where neither the Congress nor the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are the main competitors. The Mizo National Front (MNF) won 26 seats in the 2018 assembly elections, with a high vote share of 37.8%, unseating the Congress administration that had reigned for a decade.

The Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM), the regional party that surprisingly came second in the 2018 polls bagged eight seats. It is seen by many as the main contender to the ruling party.

Prominent candidates in this election include Chief Minister Zoramthanga of the MNF seeking re-election from Aizawl East-I, while the ZPM has nominated Lalthansanga as their contender. Mizoram: At least 17 killed after under-construction railway bridge collapses

At least 17 employees were murdered, and several others are believed to be trapped, after an under-construction railway bridge fell near Sairang, Mizoram, about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, around 21 kilometers from the state capital Aizawl.

At the time of the tragedy, there were 40 construction workers on the bridge. “Seventeen bodies have been recovered from the debris so far…many others are still missing,” a police officer said, according to reports.

Young Mizo Association’s Sairang branch is now conducting rescue operations. “The bridge that collapsed was part of an Indian Railways project to connect all state capitals in the northeast region. It has been under construction for some years now. The incident happened around 11am.

“We are yet to ascertain the reason behind the accident and how many people actually were on it when it occurred,” Sabyasachi De, chief public relations officer of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), said.

The bridge was built over the Kurung River, between the Bairabi and Sairang railway stations. The height of the bridge’s pier is 104 meters. The Sairang railway station will be the final railhead before reaching Mizoram’s capital. When finished, the project will link Aizawl to the national railway network.

Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga expressed grief over the incident on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), and said, “Under construction railway over bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed today; atleast 15 workers died: Rescue under progress. Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy.

“I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations.”

Rajasthan CM Gehlot backs Sachin Pilot as BJP attacks father Rajesh Pilot

On 16 August, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who is not known to share the best of equations with his former deputy, Sachin Pilot, came out in support after the Bhartiya Janata Party made allegations against his father, former Union minister Rajesh Pilot.

The BJP claimed that Rajesh Pilot was involved in the bombings over Mizoram in 1966.

Recently, during the Opposition’s motion of no-confidence in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi replied by saying that the Congress government, under the leadership of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, used air assets to bomb Mizoram in 1966.

CM Gehlot replied to this by taking to his official handle on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “Congress leader Rajesh Pilot was a brave pilot of the Indian Air Force. By insulting them, the BJP is insulting the sacrifice of the Indian Air Force. The whole country should condemn this.”

The allegations were made by the BJP’s IT Cell head Amit Malviya, on August 13, claiming that the Congress leaders Suresh Kalmadi and Rajesh Pilot were operating the IAF fighter plane, which bombed Aizawl on 5 March 1966.

Amit Malviya posted on his official social media handle saying, “Rajesh Pilot and Suresh Kalmadi were flying the Indian Air Force planes that bombed Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, on 5 March 1966. Later both became MPs on Congress tickets and ministers in the government. It is clear that Indira Gandhi gave a place in politics as a reward, and gave respect to those who carried out air raids on their own people in the Northeast.”

Denying Malviya’s claims, Sachin Pilot wrote, “You have the wrong dates, wrong facts. Yes, as an Indian Air Force pilot, my late father did drop bombs. But that was on erstwhile East Pakistan during the 1971 Indo-Pak war and not as you claim, on Mizoram on the 5th of March 1966. He was commissioned into the IAF only on 29th October 1966! Mizoram explosives seizure case: NIA arrests 3 among Myanmar national

In connection with its ongoing investigation into the Mizoram explosives, arms, and ammunition seizure case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) announced on Tuesday that it had detained three people, among them a citizen of Myanmar.

The three suspects who were taken into custody are J. Rohlupuia (age 55), Henry Siangnuna (age 48), and C. Laldinsaga (age 43). After the agency conducted a thorough search, they were detained on Monday. The defendants will be presented before the Special NIA Court in Aizawl on Tuesday, according to the NIA, where the organization will ask for their remand in the case.

Mizoram police, customs capture 4.6 kg drugs in Aizawal; 2 held

In a combined operation with customs officials, Mizoram police confiscated 4.691 kg of methamphetamine (drug) worth crores of rupees and nabbed two people in Mizoram’s Aizawal city, police said.
Customs Division, Aizawl, has taken up the case for further legal action, according to the official. According to authorities, the accused are Lallianthanga and David Lala. “In a joint operation, Mizoram police and Customs Division, Aizawl seized 4.691 kg of methamphetamine worth several crores of rupees and apprehended two persons,” Mizoram police said.
On Wednesday, in a combined operation by the Assam Rifles and Excise and Narcotics, Anti-Narcotics Squad, Aizawl apprehended two people with 340 grams of heroin worth Rs 1,70,00,000.
The 340 grams of Heroin was recovered from 30 soap cases in which it was hidden. The cost of the recovered drug is estimated to be Rs 1,70,00,000. The recovered consignment and apprehended individuals, out of which one was a Myanmar national, were handed over to Excise and Narcotics, Anti-Narcotics Squad, Aizawl on Tuesday for further legal proceedings, officials said on wednesday. Officials stated earlier this week the Assam guns found illegal-origin spirits and beer worth Rs 19.432 lakhs in Zokhawthar, Mizoram’s Champai district.
Based on precise intelligence, a combined squad of Assam Rifles and Custom Department Zokhawthar carried out the operation.

Fake Indian currency notes worth Rs 25.20 lakh seized in Mizoram, 2 held

According to police, they detained two people and confiscated a sizable amount of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) with a value of Rs 25.20 lakh on 17 May Tuesday in Aizawl, Mizoram, India.

Laltanpui (42) of Vairengte Kawngthar veng in Kolasib district and Lallungmuana (40), of N. Vanlaiphai Rawlkhang veng in Serchhip district, were the two people who were detained.

Acting on a tip, Mizoram police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Special Branch (SB) team raided the two defendants’ joint possession late last night and found counterfeit currency totaling Rs 25,20,000.

1007 notes with a value of Rs 2000 and 1012 notes with a value of Rs 500 made up the seized FICN.
According to the Vairengte Police Station, “Further investigation into the matter is underway for forward and backward linkages.”

Mizoram: 536 bags of illegal areca nuts worth Rs 3 crore seize by Assam rifles

According to officials, Assam Rifles under the command of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) seized 536 bags of illegal areca nuts worth Rs 3 crores in the general region Zotlang, Champhai.

Mizoram: Drugs worth Rs 1.18 crore seized, 4 held

A joint team of Assam Rifles and Excise & Narcotics Department, seized a large amount of drugs worth 1.18 crore in Aizwal, a district in Mizoram. In the incident, the officials held four people.
The statement further stated that the 18 soap packs (236 grammes) of heroin worth Rs. 1.18 crore and a car were found in the Falkland neighbourhood of World Bank Road, Aizawl, by the Aizawl Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles.
According to the statement, the operation was carried out by a joint team from the Assam Rifles and the Excise & Narcotics Department, Aizawl, based on specific intelligence.
The found heroin is estimated to have cost Rs 1.18 crore, and the confiscated goods, vehicle, and detained individuals were given to the Excise & Narcotics Department in Aizawl for further legal action.

On November 11, 2022, the Mizoram police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) detained two people in Aizawl and confiscated a sizable amount of the recreational drug methamphetamine, valued at Rs 58 crore. According to police, a squad from CID (SB) seized 2 lakh methamphetamine tablets, totaling 19.223 kg, from a vehicle in the Luangmual neighbourhood of Aizawl after acting on a specific intelligence tip from a sister agency.
In a similar incident on November 22, 2022, the local police in Aizwal received information about the drugs by some unknown people on the roadside near the Mizoram University road. After thorough search in the area, the police recovered a big sack containing 22 black polythene parcels which were kept in the bushes.

Experts from Delhi to conduct polygraph test of parents of infant girl in Mizoram

A senior police officer on Thursday said that in its first polygraph test in Mizoram, experts from Delhi will visit Aizwal to conduct the test on the parents of the two-year-old girl who died due to suspected sexual assault in Aizwal district on September 16.

A polygraph test will be conducted against the couple in connection with the death of the infant, who was suspected to have been sexually abused,” Aizawl Superintendent of Police (SP) C. Lalruaia told reporters.

Three experts from a forensic laboratory in Delhi will come to Aizawl to conduct the tests in December, he said.

According to the police, the Aizawl district court has also approved a request to carry out the lie-detector test, which was requested after the couple provided their assent.

Two arrested with 19 kg drugs in Mizoram

Meanwhile, the police on Friday said two people have been arrested in Aizawl worth Rs 58 crore.

“The estimated value of the seized drug is Rs 58 crore in the international market, and it was seized from a four-wheeler in the Luangmual area of Aizawl, and arrested two persons,” Police said.

The accused who have been arrested are identified as Shalim Uddin (26) and Aliqur Rohman (21) who hail from Karimganj, Assam.

However, under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 a case has been registered at the Special Narcotics police station.

Furthermore, to trace the source officials are investigating the case from whom the accused had arranged the contraband.

Northeast utilised as a route for the importation of drugs from Bangladesh and Myanmar: Manik Saha

North-eastern states of Tripura, Assam and Mizoram are being used as a corridor to smuggle drugs into the country by drug traffickers in Myanmar and also to send the narcotics substances to Bangladesh, chief minister Manik Saha said on Monday.
