</excerpt>

As tensions mount in the Middle East following Iran’s attack on a US airbase in Qatar, Air India on Tuesday said it is suspending all flight operations across the Middle East, as well as on the east coast of North America and Europe, until further notice.

Air India Reroutes Flights and Issues Passenger Advisory

An Air India spokesperson explained that all North America-bound flights to India are being routed back to their respective points of departure, while others are being routed back to India or diverted around the closed airspace.

“Amid the developing situation in the Middle East, Air India has ceased all operations to the region as well as to and from the East Coast of North America and Europe with immediate effect, until further notice,” a spokesperson of the airline said.

“Our India-bound flights from North America are diverting back to their respective origins and others are being diverted back to India or re-routed away from the closed airspace. We request the understanding of all passengers who may be affected by this disruption that’s beyond an airline’s control.”

Airlines worldwide were on high alert again after Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait temporarily closed their countries’ airspace when Iran launched an attack against the Al Udeid United States military base in Doha.

Air India Express Cancels Flights to Doha

Earlier today, Air India Express cancelled two flights to Doha because Qatar airspace was closed.

“As a result of the ongoing situation in the Middle East and suspension of Qatar airspace, Air India Express has diverted our Doha-bound flight from Kochi to Muscat and returned our flight bound from Kannur,” the airline said in a statement.

The airline maintained that it does not have any other flights headed to Qatar and there are no planes on the ground in Qatar.

IndiGo Also Affected by Middle East Airspace Closures

IndiGo Airlines also stated that recent developments in the Middle East have affected its flight operations in the region.

“In light of the recent developments in the Middle East, flight arrivals and departures from Dubai, Doha, Bahrain, Dammam, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Ras AI-Khaimah and Tbilisi are impacted,” the airlines said.

“We are actively monitoring the situation and adjusting our operations to ensure the highest level of safety for our customers and crew.”

</excerpt>

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian threatened on Sunday that the United States will have to pay for its recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites, paving the way for a possible revenge. While speaking with French President Emmanuel Macron, Pezeshkian stated, “The Americans must receive a response to their aggression,” reported Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

Echoing the words, senior advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ali Akbar Velayati, said that the war is far from finished. He threatened that American military bases in the area could now be “legitimate targets” and that any nation that hosts American troops would be in the same danger. “America no longer has a place in the Middle East,” Velayati said, terming the US attack an assault on the “heart of the Islamic world.

Iran’s foreign ministry came out with a strong statement, too. Spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei wrote on social media that Iran would protect its national security and sovereignty “by all necessary means,” condemning the US airstrikes as an “unconscionable act of aggression” by a nuclear power against a non-nuclear state.

The bombing, which hit three key nuclear facilities, has escalated regional tensions. Nevertheless, the Trump administration indicated receptiveness to diplomacy. The Trump administration, through Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance, indicated that Washington does not desire war and can re-engage Tehran at the negotiating table.

“All along, this mission has not been and is not about regime change,” Hegseth underscored, while Vance indicated the attacks might squeeze Iran into going back to negotiations.

The meticulously planned US rhetoric demonstrates an attempt to manage the backlash and position for any Iranian revenge in days to come. The Middle East remains tense with diplomatic efforts ongoing.

Airlines continued to avoid major parts of the Middle East on Sunday following the recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. According to flight tracking platform FlightRadar24, flight patterns in the region have changed significantly due to safety concerns after ongoing missile exchanges.

Airspace Avoidance Continues

FlightRadar24 posted on social media platform X, stating, “Following US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, commercial traffic in the region is operating as it has since new airspace restrictions were put into place last week.”

Their tracking maps showed that no commercial aircraft were flying over Iran, Iraq, Syria, or Israel. Instead, airlines opted for longer routes, either going north through the Caspian Sea or south via Egypt and Saudi Arabia. These alternative paths lead to increased fuel and crew expenses, as well as longer travel times.

Rising Threats to Air Travel

The growing number of global conflict zones, marked by frequent missile and drone strikes, poses a serious threat to civil aviation.

Since Israel launched strikes on Iran on June 13, many airlines have halted flights to countries in the region. Some evacuation and repatriation flights have continued, mainly from nearby countries or for Israeli citizens.

Israel Suspends Flights

Israel’s top airlines, El Al and Arkia, announced on Sunday that they were suspending all ongoing rescue flights that had helped bring back Israeli citizens. El Al also said that all scheduled flights would remain canceled through June 27.

Israel’s airports authority confirmed the country’s airspace remained closed for all flights. However, land border crossings with Egypt and Jordan were still open.

Evacuations Underway

Japan’s foreign ministry reported that it had evacuated 21 people from Iran, including 16 Japanese nationals. They were moved overland to Azerbaijan. This was the second evacuation effort by Japan since Thursday, and the ministry said it was prepared to carry out more if needed.

Meanwhile, New Zealand announced on Sunday that it would deploy a C-130J Hercules military aircraft to the Middle East. The plane, along with government staff, was scheduled to leave Auckland on Monday. Officials noted that the aircraft would take several days to arrive in the region.

The New Zealand government also said it was in discussions with commercial airlines to explore additional evacuation options for its citizens if required.

</excerpt>

The United States is expanding its military presence in the Middle East as relations between Israel and Iran grow more strained. The Pentagon is deploying more fighter jets, such as F-16s, F-22s, and F-35s, while also prolonging the deployment of others to enhance its defensive position in the area, according to three US officials.

Two officials underscored that the action is defensive in nature, with the intent to counter the increasing threat from drone warfare and missile projectiles fired by Iran or its regional partners. The US Department of Defense has not released an official statement yet regarding the deployment.

This military deployment comes after a Reuters report last week of the prior relocation of a sizable fleet of tanker aircraft to Europe and the deployment of a US aircraft carrier to the Middle East. These deployments give President Donald Trump more options as the Middle East conflict intensifies.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the military upgrades are meant to safeguard American forces deployed in the region from potential retaliatory attacks by Iran or its proxies. A fourth US defense official also signaled that the deployment of more US Navy warships with the capability to intercept ballistic missiles to the Eastern Mediterranean is being weighed.

Today, close to 40,000 American soldiers are deployed throughout the Middle East, augmented by sophisticated air defense systems, interceptors, and warships capable of detecting and destroying incoming threat.

The escalation in US military action comes after Israel’s largest air campaign ever against Iran, which was launched last Friday. Israel says it responded to intelligence that Iran was close to finalizing a nuclear weapon. Iran has repeatedly denied any wish to build nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is purely for peaceful intentions and is still within the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty framework.

War Drums In The Middle East: Iran Calls Israel Attack ‘Declaration Of War’, Vows Revenge

<excerpt>Iran declared Israel’s latest airstrikes a “declaration of war” after key generals were killed. As tensions soar, Trump warns Tehran of harsher retaliation, deepening fears of a broader regional conflict.
</excerpt>

Iran denounced Israel’s heavy bombardment on Friday as a “declaration of war,” following a lethal attack that targeted approximately 100 major targets, including nuclear installations and senior military officers. The United States, while avoiding association with the operation, threatened Iran with tougher penalties if it does not accept a nuclear agreement.

The Israeli army said it had killed several top generals, including the entire command structure of the Revolutionary Guard’s air force. Iran’s highest-ranking military officer, Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri, and Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami were among the reported fatalities.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei pledged a “bitter and painful” reprisal, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Masoud Pezeshkian making threatening warnings of reprisal. In turn, President Trump called on Tehran to make a deal, threatening “more death and destruction” if not.

The Israeli attacks, which had the aim of thwarting Iran’s nuclear aspirations, had targeted the Natanz uranium enrichment plant. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said the operation would continue “as long as needed,” based on intelligence that Iran was approaching the “point of no return” in its nuclear program.

Iran retaliated by launching about 100 drones, most intercepted before reaching Israeli airspace. Jordan also confirmed downing drones that breached its territory. While the US emphasized its non-involvement, it cautioned Iran against targeting American assets.

Civilian casualties were reported in Tehran, with 95 wounded and infrastructure damage visible across the capital. The situation has paralyzed daily life, disrupted air travel, and sparked public fear.

With diplomatic attempts in the balance, concerns now hover over the future of planned nuclear talks in Oman. As tensions escalate, world markets responded sharply oil prices climbed and stock markets fell, highlighting the escalating risk of wider regional escalation.

</excerpt>

Turkey has arrested over 1,400 protesters and multiple journalists following widespread demonstrations against Ekrem Imamoglu’s jailing. The mass detentions have sparked growing concerns about press freedom, government overreach, and the erosion of democracy under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s leadership.

Journalists Arrested While Covering Protests

On Tuesday, Turkish authorities detained seven journalists in Istanbul while they were reporting on the ongoing protests. Among them was AFP photojournalist Yasin Akgül, whose arrest has drawn international condemnation. The Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA), a free speech nonprofit, confirmed the arrests, warning that press freedom in Turkey is under serious threat.

AFP strongly criticized Yasin Akgül’s detention, calling it a “serious attack on media freedom” and demanding his immediate release. AFP chairman Fabrice Fries defended the journalist, stating, “Yasin Akgül was not part of the protest. As a journalist, he was covering one of the many demonstrations that have been taking place across the country.” He further noted that Yasin Akgül had captured 187 photographs documenting the protests, emphasizing the importance of his work.

Press freedom organizations, including Reporters Without Borders and Freedom House, have repeatedly accused the Turkish government of suppressing independent journalism. According to Reporters Without Borders, nearly 90% of national media in Turkey is now controlled by the government, limiting independent coverage and silencing dissenting voices.

Widespread Arrests and Government Response

Since last Wednesday, Turkish authorities have detained 1,418 protesters in Istanbul, Ankara, and other cities following six days of demonstrations. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that 979 suspects remain in custody, while 478 will face court proceedings. He defended the crackdown, stating, “No concessions will be made to those who attempt to terrorize the streets, attack our national values, and threaten public order.”

The protests erupted after Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu’s arrest, a key opposition figure and a major political rival to Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Ekrem Imamoglu was detained on corruption charges just days before he was expected to be nominated as a candidate for the 2028 presidential elections. Critics argue that his arrest is politically motivated, aimed at eliminating a strong challenger to Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s rule. Erkem Imamoglu, in a defiant statement, said, “We will, hand in hand, uproot this black stain on our democracy. I am standing tall, I will not bow down.”

The government has responded by banning protests in Istanbul and closing key roads to prevent large gatherings. Despite these restrictions, opposition groups continue to rally support. Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), has announced plans for a massive demonstration in Istanbul on Saturday. The rally is expected to draw thousands demanding justice for Ekrem Imamoglu and the release of detained protesters.

With Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s power significantly strengthened by a 2017 referendum that expanded his presidential authority, critics warn that Turkey is sliding further into authoritarianism. International observers continue to raise alarms over the state of democracy and human rights in the country. As protests grow, the government faces mounting pressure to justify its actions and address accusations of political suppression.

This deal could reshape Syria’s future, impact Turkey’s stance, and alter regional geopolitical dynamics.
</excerpt>

Who are the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)?

Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is a mostly Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) dominant military alliance which also has representation from Arab, Assyrian, and other communities. The SDF was created in 2015 and was supported by the United States during the struggle against ISIS. SDF were at the center of recapturing most of north and northeast Syria from ISIS territory, such as Raqqa, which was previously ISIS’s de facto capital.

What Is the Dispute All About?

Turkey sees the YPG as the pillar of the SDF being affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a terror group it believes. Turkey has conducted several cross-border operations in northern Syria with the objective of weakening the SDF.

The Syrian Government perceives the SDF’s self-governance as a threat to state sovereignty. Damascus wants to reabsorb SDF-controlled areas into its fold. US and Russia have complicated roles, with the US providing military backing to the SDF, and Russia frequently supporting Damascus in talks.

Recent Developments

Syrian Government and SDF Agree on Integration (March 2025)

The SDF struck a historic deal with the Syrian government whereby the SDF would be incorporated into the Syrian Army and disband its independent operations. The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), the ruling entity dominated by the SDF, would be transformed into Syrian state institutions.

Syrian regime will assume borders, public institutions, and oil resources in the northeast. The rights of Kurdish and other minorities will be recognized in the political process.

Turkish Reaction and Regional Response

Turkey has greeted the deal warily, insisting on transparency about the YPG’s future. US, though a supporter of the SDF, has not been against the agreement, indicating a change in Syria priorities. Russia acted as a mediator between the parties, with a preference for Syria’s sovereignty.

What This Means for the Future

End of SDF autonomy: The agreement effectively terminates the autonomous Kurdish-led government, subjecting it to Syrian government control. Prospective stability but also uncertainty, though this deal diminishes confrontation between the SDF and Damascus, it fuels uncertainty regarding Kurdish rights and what Turkey will do next.

Diminished US presence in Syria: With the SDF being assimilated into Syria’s army, US power in Syria could fall, to the advantage of Russia and Iran.

This growth is a watershed moment for Syria’s post-war environment, but its success is contingent upon precise execution and resolving tensions with Turkey.

US opposition limited Hezbollah’s influence, while international bodies welcomed the move, emphasizing reform and ceasefire implementation.
</excerpt>

Lebanon formed a new government on Saturday after weeks of negotiations, coming after direct intervention by the US aimed at reining in influence by Hezbollah while securing financial help for reconstruction over the devastating conflict with Israel.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced the 24-member cabinet at the presidential palace, saying that the government’s priorities include financial reforms, reconstruction efforts, and implementing a United Nations resolution aimed at stabilizing the Lebanese-Israeli border. The formation process faced delays due to disputes over Shi’ite ministerial appointments, traditionally controlled by Hezbollah and its ally Amal.

Washington opposed Hezbollah’s participation in the new government, with US Deputy Middle East Envoy Morgan Ortagus calling it a “red line” and praising Israel for weakening the group remarks that triggered protests in Lebanon. Ultimately, Amal, led by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, secured four ministerial positions, including Finance Minister Yassin Jaber, while approving a fifth appointment. This arrangement prevented Hezbollah and its allies from controlling a veto-wielding “blocking third” in the cabinet.

The US Embassy in Lebanon welcomed the new government, hoping it would strengthen state institutions and implement necessary reforms. The Christian Lebanese Forces Party, which opposes Hezbollah, secured four ministerial positions, including Foreign Minister Youssef Raji and Energy Minister Joseph Saddi.

Lebanon has been plagued by an economic crisis, a deadly Beirut port explosion, and a year-long war with Israel. The new government is seeking to implement reforms needed to win the support of the International Monetary Fund and the Gulf states for financial aid. United Nations sounded hopeful, urging Lebanon to enforce Security Council Resolution 1701, which demands Hezbollah’s disarmament and Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

President Joseph Aoun, supported by the US, was elected on January 9 and immediately appointed Salam, a former head of the International Court of Justice, to form a government. The cabinet will now have to prepare a policy statement and obtain parliamentary approval to take full powers.

</excerpt>

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets carried out overnight airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon’s Bekaa region. The strikes were aimed at neutralizing threats to Israeli territory and military forces.

Weapons Production and Smuggling Routes Hit

Among the targets attacked was a military site with underground infrastructure used for weapons development and production. The IDF also targeted transit routes along the Syria-Lebanon border, which Hezbollah allegedly uses to smuggle arms into Lebanon.

Drone Violation Escalates Tensions

In addition, the IDF stated that an incoming Hezbollah drone was intercepted by Israeli forces on Thursday. The drone’s incursion was considered a breach of security understandings between Israel and Lebanon, further escalating tensions between the two nations.

Growing Regional Tensions

This latest strike comes amid increasing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, with cross-border clashes intensifying in recent months. Israel has repeatedly warned against Hezbollah’s military buildup and arms transfers, citing security threats.

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden held a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, focusing on a potential ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Netanyahu updated Biden on the progress of discussions being mediated in Doha, Qatar, and shared the terms set by the Israeli delegation.

US Administration’s Efforts

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated earlier on Sunday that a deal was “very close” but not finalized, citing resistance from Hamas. Sullivan emphasized that the Biden administration remains committed to securing a resolution during its final days in office.
“We are determined to use every day to achieve this goal,” he said, confirming regular updates to Biden about the talks.

Trump Administration’s Role

Incoming Vice President JD Vance hinted that a breakthrough could occur during the last days of Biden’s term. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has promised peace in the Middle East, though specific plans have yet to be disclosed.
Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, has also joined negotiations, collaborating with Egypt and Qatar to mediate between Israel and Hamas.

Hostage Crisis and Casualties

Currently, approximately 100 hostages are reportedly being held by Hamas, according to AFP. The conflict has led to severe casualties, with the Palestinian health ministry reporting over 46,000 deaths in Gaza.

Conclusion

With Biden’s term nearing its conclusion, the urgency to secure a ceasefire and resolve the hostage crisis remains paramount. Efforts by the outgoing and incoming US administrations reflect a unified push toward stability in the region.

</excerpt>

On Friday, Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital, located on the northern edge of Gaza, as part of ongoing military operations. The evacuation involved 350 individuals, including 75 patients, their companions, and 185 medical staff. Witnesses reported parts of the hospital on fire, with claims that contact with hospital staff had been lost.

The Palestinian health ministry alleged that Israeli forces detained the hospital director, Abu Safiya, along with dozens of staff members.

Health Ministry Alleges Intentional Fire

Munir Al-Bursh, Gaza’s health ministry director, accused Israeli forces of deliberately setting fire to key hospital facilities, including the surgical department, laboratory, and a storehouse. Hamas echoed these accusations, calling Israel’s actions “crimes against humanity.”

In response, the Israeli military (IDF) stated that there was a small fire in an empty hospital building and denied claims of intentional harm, asserting they facilitated safe evacuations before the operation.

Casualties and Rising Tensions

Reports indicate Israeli strikes killed at least 25 people across Gaza on Friday, including 15 individuals in a single house in Gaza City. Kamal Adwan Hospital has been targeted multiple times during weeks of conflict in northern Gaza.

Health officials disclosed that five medical staff, including a pediatrician, were killed during earlier strikes on Kamal Adwan. The IDF stated it was unaware of these deaths but committed to examining the reports.

Humanitarian Crisis in Northern Gaza

The northern areas of Gaza, including Beit Lahiya, Jabalia, and Beit Hanoun, have seen significant displacement, with large parts systematically razed. Many speculate Israel may turn these areas into a buffer zone post-conflict.

Patients and staff evacuated from Kamal Adwan Hospital were redirected to the Indonesian Hospital, which had already sustained heavy damage and been rendered non-operational.

Conflict Background and Escalation

The ongoing war, triggered by Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has left over 45,300 Palestinians dead and displaced most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. Israel stated the campaign aims to dismantle Hamas’ infrastructure while ensuring future security control of Gaza.

Hamas holds Israel and the U.S. responsible for the worsening humanitarian crisis, while Israel accuses Hamas of using civilian infrastructure for military purposes.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah. He shared the announcement on X, noting its importance in easing the suffering of civilians.

Relief for Civilians

Starmer called the ceasefire “long overdue.” He said it would offer “some measure of relief” to the civilian populations of Lebanon and Northern Israel. Both sides have endured severe consequences during months of intense conflict.

Call for a Lasting Solution

Starmer urged the ceasefire to lead to a “lasting political solution in Lebanon.” He emphasized the need for a solution based on Security Council Resolution 1701. This, he said, would help civilians return to their homes and allow communities on both sides to rebuild.

UK’s Commitment to Peace

Starmer reiterated that the UK and its allies will stay at the forefront of efforts to end the cycle of violence. Their goal is to achieve sustainable peace in the Middle East.

Attention on Gaza

Starmer also pointed to Gaza, calling for “immediate progress” toward a ceasefire. He stressed the need for the release of all hostages and the removal of restrictions on vital humanitarian aid.

Israel and Hezbollah Ceasefire Announcement

Starmer’s statement came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden announced the ceasefire deal. The ceasefire follows months of clashes and significant casualties between Israel and Hezbollah.

Netanyahu’s Warning

Netanyahu made it clear that the ceasefire’s duration depends on events in Lebanon. He said Israel would maintain military freedom to act if Hezbollah violates the agreement. “If Hezbollah violates the agreement and tries to arm itself, we will attack,” Netanyahu warned.

Escalating Conflict

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began on October 8, 2023, when Hezbollah attacked Israeli-controlled territory. The violence escalated into a major military offensive by Israel, resulting in deaths, injuries, and the destruction of infrastructure. Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high, and efforts for a lasting peace continue.

</excerpt>

The United States is strengthening its military presence in the Middle East to protect American citizens, support Israel, and promote de-escalation through diplomacy and deterrence.

To reinforce these objectives, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has ordered the deployment of additional ballistic missile defense destroyers, fighter squadrons, tanker aircraft, and B-52 long-range strike bombers to the region.

In an official statement, the Department of Defense (DoD) explained, “In keeping with our commitments to the protection of US citizens and forces in the Middle East, the defense of Israel, and de-escalation through deterrence and diplomacy, the Secretary of Defense ordered the deployment of additional ballistic missile defence destroyers, fighter squadron and tanker aircraft, and several US Air Force B-52 long-range strike bombers to the region. These forces will begin to arrive in the coming months as the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN Carrier Strike Group prepares to depart.”

The DoD added, “These deployments build on the recent decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defence system to Israel as well as DoD’s sustained Amphibious Ready Group Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU) posture in the Eastern Mediterranean. These movements demonstrate the flexible nature of the US global defence posture and the US capability to deploy worldwide on short notice to meet evolving national security threats.”

The statement also reiterated Secretary Austin’s commitment to defending US personnel, stating, “Secretary Austin continues to make clear that should Iran, its partners, or its proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take every measure necessary to defend our people.”

This move follows Austin’s conversation with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant on Thursday, where they discussed options for de-escalation amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East. Their conversation emphasized the US’s commitment to Israel’s security, especially in response to threats from Iran and its proxies.

Austin shared on X, “I spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant today to discuss opportunities for regional de-escalation. I reaffirmed that the United States remains fully prepared to defend US personnel, Israel, and partners across the region against threats from Iran and Iran-backed proxies.”

To tackle global challenges such as climate change and authoritarian expansion, three new committees have been established: the National Climate Change Committee, the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee, and the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee.

“These three committees are interconnected and closely related to national resilience,” Lai remarked. The goal is to create better responses to challenges and foster closer cooperation with the international community.

“Taiwan is also continuing to diversify green energy sources and develop energy technologies to achieve the global goal of net zero by 2050,” he added.

Addressing cross-strait relations, he affirmed that “Taiwan is determined to uphold peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” emphasizing that “Taipei’s commitments to dialogue in the Taiwan Strait based on equality and dignity are unchanged.”

“The nation is also ready to collaborate with China to address global issues and ensure regional security for the benefit of people on both sides of the strait,” he said.

Additionally, Lai urged China to contribute to regional and global peace and security, leveraging its influence to help resolve conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

“China can use its influence to help end the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East,” he remarked. “Amid these turbulent times, Taiwan will remain confident and resilient and be a force for peace and prosperity in the region.”

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this year’s National Day celebration attracted approximately 183 distinguished foreign guests, including 14 official delegations and 91 representatives of diplomatic missions in Taiwan from both allied and non-allied countries.

On the same day, China launched satellites from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, with the flight path over central Taiwan heading toward the Western Pacific.

Her remarks come in the wake of Iran’s recent ballistic missile attacks on Israel, which were retaliatory strikes amid heightened military tensions in the region.

Context of the Remarks

Harris’s statements were made on Tuesday as she campaigns for the upcoming U.S. presidential election against former President Donald Trump, set for November 5. The timing of her comments coincided with Iran’s missile barrage targeting Israel, a response to Israel’s ongoing military operations in Lebanon. Despite the missile strikes, no injuries were reported in Israel, and U.S. officials characterized the attack as ineffective.

Key Statements from Harris

“I’m clear-eyed that Iran is a destabilizing, dangerous force in the Middle East,” Kamala Harris asserted during her address. She reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring Israel’s right to defend itself against threats from Iran and Iran-backed militant groups.

In addition, Harris expressed her full support for President Joe Biden’s directive allowing the U.S. military to intercept Iranian missiles aimed at Israel. “Initial indications are that Israel, with our assistance, was able to defeat this attack,” she noted.

Commitment to Allies

Harris stressed that the United States will collaborate with its allies to counter Iran’s “aggressive behavior,” highlighting a commitment to regional stability.

Ongoing Military Operations

The backdrop of Harris’s comments involves an intensifying military campaign by Israel in Lebanon, where hundreds have been killed and more than a million displaced due to Israeli operations targeting the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia. This military action follows a series of escalations, including a violent attack on Israel by Palestinian Hamas militants on October 7, leading to a significant Israeli military response in Gaza.

The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths in Gaza according to Palestinian health authorities, leading to allegations of genocide against Israel, which the country has denied.

As tensions remain high, Harris’s statements underscore the Biden administration’s stance on the escalating conflict and the need for a unified response to threats from Iran.

Market Response

Brent crude oil prices climbed above $72 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices remained relatively stable. The rise in prices comes after Israel conducted an airstrike in Beirut, resulting in the death of Nasrallah. This action is considered a significant setback for Hezbollah and its Iranian backers.

Israeli Military Actions

In addition to the airstrike in Beirut, Israeli fighter jets targeted sites in Yemen. This was in response to recent attacks on central Israel carried out by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Iran’s Reaction

At this point, Iran does not appear eager to escalate the situation further. President Masoud Pezeshkian refrained from promising an immediate retaliation against Israel. During his first international appearance at the United Nations, he adopted a notably measured tone.

Opposition to Violence in Gaza and Lebanon

Abdullah emphasized the need to end the killings of innocent civilians in Gaza and Lebanon. He criticized the ongoing military actions by Israel, reiterating that the JKNC has consistently opposed such bombings since last year. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and global leaders to exert pressure on Israel to restore peace. “The series of killings and injuring innocent people should be stopped, whether it is in Gaza, Lebanon, or anywhere else,” he said.

Mehbooba Mufti Cancels Campaign in Solidarity

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, head of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), also reacted to Nasrallah’s death by canceling her election campaign. She expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine and Lebanon during this time of grief. In a post on X, Mufti stated, “Cancelling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon and Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah. We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this hour of immense grief and exemplary resistance.”

Israeli Airstrikes Confirm Nasrallah’s Death

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that Hassan Nasrallah was killed in airstrikes carried out in Beirut. In a statement, the IDF claimed, “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.”

Following the announcement of Nasrallah’s death, a protest march took place in Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in opposition to the Israeli actions. Participants expressed their outrage and solidarity with those affected by the violence in Lebanon and Gaza.

</excerpt>

On Monday, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby warned that the United States must brace for potential ‘significant’ attacks on Israel, which could occur this week amid the escalating tensions in the Middle East. This announcement follows President Joe Biden’s discussions with leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy, as the US seeks to reduce tensions in the region.

“We share the same concerns and expectations that our Israeli counterparts have with respect to potential timing here. Could be this week,” Kirby told reporters, according to The Times of Israel.

“We have to be prepared for what could be a significant set of attacks,” he said.

The call, according to Kirby, was “largely for all the leaders to repeat what they have said before in terms of reaffirming Israel’s defence” as well as “send a strong message that we don’t want to see any rise in violence, any attacks by Iran or its proxies.”

In a joint statement on Monday, US President Biden and the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, and Italy urged Iran to de-escalate its threats of a military attack against Israel.

The joint statement, according to the White House, read, “We called on Iran to stand down its ongoing threats of a military attack against Israel and discussed the serious consequences for regional security should such an attack take place.”

It also highlighted the critical need for the delivery and distribution of aid.

“We expressed our full support for ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions and reach a ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza. We endorsed the joint call from President Biden, President Sisi of Egypt, and Amir Tamim of Qatar to renew talks later this week with an aim to concluding the deal as soon as possible, and stressed there is no further time to lose,” the joint statement read.

“All parties must live up to their responsibilities. In addition, unfettered delivery and distribution of aid is needed. We expressed our support for the defence of Israel against Iranian aggression and against attacks by Iran-backed terrorist groups,” it added.

Following the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month, which led to Iranian promises of “punishment,” Israel is bracing for possible retaliation. While Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in Haniyeh’s death, it had previously threatened to target him and other senior Hamas leaders for their role in the October 7 attacks. Tensions in West Asia intensified after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported on July 31 that Haniyeh had been killed in an attack in Tehran. According to the IRGC, Haniyeh and a bodyguard were killed when their residence was struck in Tehran. Press TV reported that a projectile hit a residence designated for war veterans at 2 am local time on Wednesday.

The IDF also reported the death of top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon on July 30. This action was in response to a rocket attack on the Golan Heights that resulted in the deaths of 12 children.

According to an IDF statement, Fuad Shukr, described as the “most senior Hezbollah military commander,” was killed in the Israeli strike. Shukr was a member of the Jihad Council, Hezbollah’s highest military authority, and was regarded as the head of its strategic division.

Since the attack on October 7 by Hamas, he has been overseeing Hezbollah’s operations against Israel, including the recent deadly strike in Majdal Shams that resulted in the deaths of 12 children, according to the military.

</excerpt>

Iran has affirmed its right to take a significant retaliatory action against Israel, following heightened tensions and allegations of preparations for a large-scale attack. This response comes after Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant informed US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin that Iran was gearing up for such an offensive. In response to these developments, the US has deployed the USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine, to the Middle East, and additional fighter jets and navy warships have been sent to reinforce regional security.

Iranian officials, including Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani, have declared their intent to retaliate for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on July 31. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has also indicated that they are preparing to execute an order from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to “harshly punish” Israel.

In reaction to the rising tensions, leaders from France, Germany, and the UK have called for a ceasefire and the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a joint statement urging an end to the fighting and the release of hostages held by Hamas. Scholz has also directly appealed to Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezeshkian, to help prevent further military escalation.

The escalating threat has prompted some international airlines to cancel flights to the region. Lufthansa has extended its suspension of flights to Tel Aviv, Tehran, Beirut, Amman, and Erbil, citing safety concerns. The airline has also avoided Iranian and Iraqi airspace.

The Israeli military’s ongoing operations in Gaza, including a recent missile strike on a school-turned-shelter that killed at least 80 people, have led to massive evacuations. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with almost 40,000 Palestinians reported killed since the conflict began in October, and many displaced persons living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has suggested considering sanctions in response to Israeli far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s remarks. Ben-Gvir’s statements, which advocate for cutting off aid to Gaza until Hamas releases hostages and suggest reoccupying Gaza, have been criticized as incitements to war crimes. Borrell has called on Israel to distance itself from such incitements and engage sincerely in ceasefire negotiations mediated by the US, Qatar, and Egypt.

Concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East have prompted several international airlines to suspend their flights to the region. Among them, Air India has announced an indefinite halt to its services to and from Tel Aviv. The suspension, effective immediately, was implemented due to heightened conflict between Iran and Israel.

Air India, in a statement on X, said, “In light of the current situation in parts of the Middle East, we have suspended our flights to and from Tel Aviv with immediate effect.” This decision follows increased tensions after the assassination of key leaders from militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah, which has fueled fears of a broader regional conflict.

In view of the current situation in parts of the Middle East, scheduled operation of our flights to and from Tel Aviv are suspended with immediate effect until further notice. We are continuously monitoring the situation and are offering a full refund to…

— Air India (@airindia) August 9, 2024

Other airlines have also adjusted their flight schedules in response to the deteriorating situation. Air France has extended its suspension of flights between Paris and Beirut until August 11, while Delta Airlines has halted its services between New York and Tel Aviv until August 31. Additionally, the Algerian airline has temporarily suspended flights to and from Lebanon until further notice, and a German airline has announced it will avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace, suspending flights to several Middle Eastern destinations, including Tel Aviv, Tehran, and Beirut, through August 13. Singapore Airlines has also rerouted flights to avoid flying over Iranian airspace.

These suspensions come amid growing concerns over a potential Iranian retaliation following the killing of a top Hamas leader in Tehran. The assassination has escalated tensions between Israel and Iran, with Iran blaming Israel for the attack and vowing a strong response. Leaders from Hezbollah, Hamas, and other groups have also pledged retaliation, raising fears of a regional war and sparking international efforts to prevent further violence.

Adding to the rising tension, Russia, an ally of Iran, issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) prohibiting flights from departing Russian airports to Israeli airports during nighttime hours. This restriction, effective from August 9 to at least August 16, may be extended further as Tehran prepares for a possible attack on Israel. Meanwhile, leaders from the US, Egypt, and Qatar have called on Israel and Hamas to engage in negotiations on August 15 to finalize a Gaza ceasefire and a hostage release deal.

In a joint statement, the three countries said, “A framework agreement is now on the table with only the details of implementation left to conclude. There is no further time to waste nor excuses from any party for further delay. It is time to release the hostages, begin the ceasefire, and implement this agreement.”

Despite ongoing efforts, disagreements over the timing of a planned swap of Palestinian detainees held by Israel and hostages held by Hamas remain unresolved. Critics of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accuse him of delaying talks to end the war in Gaza, which began on October 7 when Hamas killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel. Since then, nearly 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Palestinian agencies.

The recent assassination of a top Hamas leader in Tehran has further complicated ceasefire negotiations, with many viewing it as a significant blow to peace efforts. While Israel has not commented on the killing, US officials believe Hamas can resume negotiations despite the July 31 assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, who had been leading talks for Hamas.

Protesters stormed her official residence in Dhaka, prompting Hasina’s departure. She landed at Hindon air base near Delhi and is reportedly en route to London, where she has sought asylum. In her absence, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that an interim government would take over.

This upheaval in Bangladesh coincides with rising global tensions. In the UK, riots have erupted across several cities following a mass stabbing in Southport, leading to widespread property damage and clashes with police. In the Middle East, tensions are also high as Iran threatens retaliation against Israel following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The US has warned of a potential Iranian offensive in the next 48 hours.

Social media users are expressing concerns about these developments potentially leading to World War III. Recent comments online suggest that the current global situation, including unrest in Bangladesh, ongoing conflicts, and civil disturbances in the UK, could be signs of a broader impending conflict.

Stock markets and other economic indicators are also being scrutinized amid these fears, with some predicting severe financial repercussions if these tensions escalate further.

</excerpt>

Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s Security Council Secretary, arrived in Tehran on Monday for high-level discussions with Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency. This visit comes amidst escalating regional tensions following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.

Key Meetings and Regional Tensions

Shoigu’s visit is significant given the current instability in the Middle East. In addition to meeting with President Pezeshkian, Shoigu is scheduled to confer with Iran’s national security chief and the head of the general staff. The discussions are expected to focus on the volatile situation in the region and the broader strategic partnership between Russia and Iran.

Russia-Iran Relations and Military Cooperation

Since the start of Russia’s war with Ukraine, Russia and Iran have strengthened their ties, with reports indicating substantial military cooperation. Iran has allegedly supplied Russia with ballistic missiles and one-way attack drones, which Russia is reported to have used in its conflict with Ukraine—a claim Moscow denies.

Condemnation of Assassination

Russia, along with Iran, has condemned the assassination of the Hamas leader, highlighting the potential for dangerous repercussions from such actions. The visit underscores Russia’s commitment to bolstering its alliance with Iran amidst ongoing regional conflicts.

On July 31, Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, was killed in Tehran while attending the swearing-in of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian. Haniyeh, who resided in Qatar, was a leading figure in Hamas, which has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007.

The day before, on July 30, Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. The strike also resulted in the deaths of three women and two young siblings. Israel stated that Shukr was responsible for rocket fire that killed 12 youths in the Golan Heights on July 27.

Iran has accused Israel of orchestrating Haniyeh’s assassination and has warned of severe retaliation. The Revolutionary Guards also accused the U.S. of supporting Israel and suggested that Israel would face severe punishment. Iran’s mission to the United Nations expects Hezbollah to expand its targets beyond military sites within Israel.

In response, the U.S. plans to deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the Middle East. The U.S. has also advised its citizens in Lebanon to leave immediately and has temporarily suspended flights to Tel Aviv. President Joe Biden has expressed concern that the violence could escalate, complicating cease-fire negotiations.

In Gaza, the death toll has exceeded 39,550 Palestinians since the escalation of the conflict on October 7, following a brutal Hamas attack on Israel. Israel has reported killing nine Palestinian militants in Tulkarem in the northern West Bank.

India has issued advisories for its nationals in Israel to remain vigilant and stay near safety shelters. The Indian embassy in Lebanon has urged its citizens to leave the country, and Air India has suspended flights to Tel Aviv until August 8.

</excerpt>

US is significantly boosting its military presence in the Middle East in response to heightened regional tensions between Iran and Israel, following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group, currently operating in the Gulf of Oman.

In addition to the carrier strike group, the Pentagon is sending a fighter squadron and additional warships, including destroyers and cruisers capable of ballistic missile defense, to the region helping Israel from any possible attacks by Iran and its proxies. The precise details of the warships involved have not been disclosed, though two US destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean participated in intercepting Iranian strikes against Israel in April.

The USS Wasp amphibious assault ship, already stationed in the region, is equipped with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and can facilitate the evacuation of US citizens from Lebanon if necessary. The US military’s commitment to defend Israel has been emphasized as “ironclad,” with missile defense forces on heightened alert.

Iran has vowed retaliation for the killing of Haniyeh, which occurred on July 31 in Tehran. Iran and its proxy in Gaza have blamed Israel for the assassination, although Israel has not confirmed involvement. The assassination followed the Israeli claim of having killed Fuad Shukr, a top military commander of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Pentagon stated that the new deployments aim to “improve US force protection, increase support for the defense of Israel, and ensure preparedness for various contingencies.” This move comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, exacerbated by recent conflicts and threats.

Despite the increased military presence, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh indicated that the US does not view escalation as inevitable, advocating for a ceasefire as a potential resolution. An Israeli delegation is scheduled to travel to Cairo for negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire and a hostage release deal.

The ongoing conflict began with a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 deaths. Israel’s subsequent military operations in Gaza have claimed nearly 40,000 lives, according to Hamas-run health reports.

</excerpt>

In a rare and deadly airstrike, Israel targeted a Hezbollah commander in Beirut, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to dozens of people. This marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

Details of the Airstrike

Date: Tuesday

Location: Haret Hreik, Beirut, Lebanon

Target: Alleged Hezbollah commander

Casualties:
Killed: 1 woman
Injured: 68 people

Background of the Conflict

The strike aimed at a Hezbollah commander allegedly responsible for multiple attacks on Israel, including a recent rocket attack on the Golan Heights that killed 12 youths. Israel holds Hezbollah accountable despite their denial of involvement.

Statements and Reactions

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant: “Hezbollah crossed a red line.”

Hezbollah Official Ali Ammar: “The Israeli enemy has committed a great stupid act… The Israeli enemy will pay a price for this sooner or later.”

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati: Condemned the attack, noting its proximity to a major hospital in Beirut.

Damage and Rescue Efforts

The strike damaged several buildings and caused debris to litter the surrounding streets. Emergency services and utility crews worked to rescue the injured and clear the area.

Historical Context

This attack marks the first time since January that Israel has targeted Beirut. The last significant airstrike was during the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006.

International Response

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre: Emphasized that the Biden administration does not see all-out war as inevitable and continues to hope for a diplomatic solution.

</excerpt>

Israel aims to strike Hezbollah without escalating to all-out war, as Lebanon braces for retaliation after a rocket strike killed 12 children and teens in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. According to Israeli officials, the response is anticipated to involve a few days of fighting but will not lead to a broader conflict.

On Saturday, a rocket hit a sports field in a Druze village, prompting Israel and the United States to blame Lebanon’s Hezbollah. Hezbollah, however, denied any involvement. The incident heightened concerns about escalating hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed group, potentially spiraling into a more destructive war.

Israel’s security cabinet has authorized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to determine the timing and manner of the response. The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the planned response would be “limited but significant,” with options ranging from attacks on infrastructure to targeting Hezbollah weapons depots or commanders.

Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have intensified since the Gaza war, marking the worst escalation since their 2006 conflict. Hezbollah, an ally of the Palestinian group Hamas, has stated its attacks are in support of Palestinians and will cease once Israel’s offensive on Gaza ends.

</excerpt>

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his Foreign Minister died in a helicopter crash while travelling across mountainous territory in dense fog. The plane carried Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian as well as the governor of the province of East Azerbaijan in Iran along with other officials and security guards. Raisi was on his way back from an excursion to the Iranian-Azerbaijani border, where he had assisted President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan in the groundbreaking of a dam.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, is thought to have Raisi as a favourite and possible heir to his post in the Shiite theocracy. The Iranian constitution announced that after Ebrahim Raisi’s death, the first vice president, Muhammad Mokhber, would become president. Iran’s activities won’t be affected by the disaster, Khamenei has publicly promised Iranians.

Israel has yet to provide an immediate official reaction. However, last month, in response to an Israeli strike on an Iranian consular building in Damascus that claimed the lives of two Iranian generals, Tehran retaliated with a barrage of missiles and drones directed at Israel. While most of these projectiles were intercepted, tensions seemed to have subsided since then. The escalation peaked last month when, under the leadership of Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran deployed numerous drones and ballistic missiles at Israel after an airstrike on an Iranian Consulate in Syria, resulting in casualties among Iranian military personnel, including two generals and five officers.

Why would the Middle East face issues as a result of the helicopter crash?

Every attack that is traded in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas—which has also involved other Iranian allies—raises the potential of a broader war.

Unexpected events could make this risky scenario worse, such as the disappearance of a helicopter carrying top officials.

Israel has always considered Iran to be its greatest threat since Tehran has ballistic missiles, a controversial nuclear programme, and support networks dedicated to destroying Israel.

Iran views itself as the main supporter of Palestinian resistance to Israeli domination, with Iranian authorities advocating for the annihilation of Israel.

Firm-minded Regarded as Khamenei’s successor apparent and protégé, Raisi attacked Israel last month, saying that “the Zionist Israeli regime has been committing oppression against the people of Palestine for 75 years.”

It is believed that Israel has attacked Iranian nuclear scientists and senior military officers on several occasions throughout the years.

Israel has not responded to the incident, and there is no evidence linking it to Sunday’s helicopter mishap.

The enduring apprehension that Persian Gulf Arab countries harbour towards Iran has also been a major factor in Saudi Arabia’s decision to investigate restoring diplomatic ties with Israel in 2020, as well as the UAE and Bahrain’s similar decision.

Iran has supported Hamas, which spearheaded the Oct. 7 raid into Israel that started the Gaza conflict, and the more radical but smaller Palestinian Islamic Jihad throughout the years with financial and other backing. However, there is no proof that Iran took a direct part in the assault.

Iran’s leaders have shown support for the Palestinians ever since the conflict began. Much more has been done by their regional partners. Since the beginning of the Gaza war, Israel and the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran’s most sophisticated military ally, have been engaged in a low-intensity struggle. Tens of thousands of civilians have been forced to evacuate as a result of the nearly daily exchange of strikes between the two sides along the Israel-Lebanon border. Though it would be terrible for both countries, the issue hasn’t yet escalated into a full-fledged war.

Iran’s influence extends far beyond the Middle East and its ongoing rivalry with Israel

Suspicions surrounding Iran’s nuclear aspirations have persisted among Israel and Western nations, who fear that its ostensibly peaceful nuclear program might be a facade for developing nuclear weapons, thus posing a threat to global non-proliferation endeavors.

The withdrawal of then-President Donald Trump from the landmark nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers in 2018, along with the imposition of stringent sanctions, prompted Iran to gradually disregard the constraints set by the agreement. At present, Iran is enriching uranium to levels nearing 60% purity, edging closer to the threshold of weapons-grade purity at 90%. Moreover, Iran has interfered with surveillance cameras installed by the U.N. nuclear agency and limited access to its facilities for some of the agency’s most seasoned inspectors. Despite Iran’s insistence on the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, suspicions persist among the United States and other nations regarding Iran’s alleged active pursuit of nuclear weapons until 2003.

Although widely believed to possess nuclear capabilities, Israel has never formally acknowledged its possession of such weapons.

Additionally, Iran has cultivated a significant partnership with Russia, particularly in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Accusations have been leveled against Iran for supplying explosive drones that have inflicted considerable damage on Ukrainian cities, exacerbating tensions in the region.

</excerpt>

India’s service sector made a strong start to the first fiscal quarter as new business in terms of total sales and output registered the sharpest expansion in 14 years taking the seasonally adjusted HSBC India Services Business Activity Index to 60.8 in April. Despite falling from 61.2 at the end of the previous fiscal quarter, the last month saw the second-fastest rise in international orders in series history as near-record upturn in services exports helped boost sales growth on the back of favourable economic conditions, demand strength and rising intakes of new work.

Business activity increased across the four sub-categories monitored by the survey, led by steep growth in finance and insurance. In addition to buoyant domestic demand, firms noted new business gains from several parts of the world, which collectively underpinned the second-quickest upturn in international sales since the series started in September 2014. Notably, services companies observed the second-fastest increase in new export business in the near 10-year series history, behind only that seen in March, buoyed by gains from several countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Middle East. Outstanding business meanwhile increased for the 28th consecutive month in April, albeit at a slight pace that was softer than in March and broadly aligned with the average over this sequence.

According to Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC, India’s service activity rose at a slightly softer pace in April, backed by a further rise in new orders, with a notable strength in domestic demand. “Although new export orders remained robust, they showed a slight moderation from March figures. Overall confidence among service providers for the year-ahead outlook improved markedly, bolstered by resilient demand conditions. In terms of overall activity, aggregate output across both the manufacturing and service sectors rose significantly in April, albeit at a slightly slower pace, indicating sustained health in these sectors,” says Bhandari.

Wage pressures and higher food prices meanwhile led to another increase in cost burdens, which firms partially passed on to their customers. Charge inflation eased from March’s near seven-year high, however. Amid reports of higher input (particularly fruits and vegetables) and labour costs, operating expenses continued to increase in April. The overall rate of inflation pulled back since March and was broadly aligned with its long-run average.

The consumer services segment saw by far the sharpest increase in input costs. A backdrop of robust underlying demand enabled service providers to pass part of their additional cost burdens through to clients in the form of increased charges. The rate of selling price inflation eased from March’s near seven-year high and was close to its long-run trend.

Buoyed by rising inflows of new business, a few service providers in India showed an increased appetite for new hires in April. That said, with several companies indicating that payroll numbers were sufficient for current requirements, the rate of job creation was marginal and softer than that seen at the end of the previous fiscal year.

Finally, confidence among service providers towards the year-ahead outlook for business activity improved to a three-month high. Marketing efforts and efficiency gains, alongside plans to price competitively and predictions that demand conditions will remain favourable, boosted optimism.

The final HSBC India Composite index also signalled a substantial rate of expansion across the private sector, reading at 61.5 in April (March: 61.8), — one of the highest seen in close to 14 years. It, however, came in below the flash estimate. As was the case for output, manufacturers continued to note a stronger increase in new business intakes than service providers. Aggregate sales rose sharply, and at one of the fastest rates since mid-2010. Goods producers also led April’s rise in payroll numbers, with softer growth in the service economy curbing job creation at the composite level.

Aggregate input costs across India rose moderately at the start of the first fiscal quarter. The rate of inflation was softer than in March and below its long-run average. Here, the stronger increase was registered in the service sector. Moderate increases in selling prices were recorded at manufacturing firms and their services counterparts. Across the private sector, charge inflation softened since March.
