</excerpt>

Parent company Meta of Facebook and Instagram has come under fierce criticism after a damning courtroom blunder in the course of an unfolding antitrust trial revealed confidential competitor data from Apple, Google, and Snapchat. The misfortune, through inadequately redacted court papers, has brought Meta’s data practices to the spotlight once again.

Redaction Error Reveals Confidential Insights

The controversy started when Meta’s legal team filed documents that were supposed to be redacted. But the redactions were poorly done to a point where the viewers could easily read the information that was supposed to be hidden. Futurism and The Verge reported that the revelation in one of the slides was that iPhone users used Apple’s native messaging app more than Meta’s. Although the revelation might sound insignificant, it was sufficient to raise questions about Meta’s redaction of sensitive court filings.

Competitors Respond to Data Leak

Technology competitors were quick to express their dismay. Snapchat lawyers condemned Meta’s reckless treatment of proprietary information, stating the company had shown a “cavalier approach” and would never jeopardize its own secrets so. Apple wondered if Meta could be relied upon in the future, and Google cautioned that the episode could set a concerning precedent for the release of confidential court documents.

Meta’s History of Data Controversies

This is not the first time Meta has drawn criticism regarding data privacy. The firm was previously criticized for “Operation Ghostbusters,” a secret project designed to collect user information from Snapchat. Moreover, in 2019, a significant security vulnerability exposed more than 500 million Facebook users’ personal data. These repeated blunders have created a worrying image of Meta’s data protection on internal as well as external levels.

FTC’s Antitrust Case Intensifies

The courtroom gaffe couldn’t have happened at a more inopportune moment for Meta, as it is presently battling a large antitrust suit brought by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC claims that Meta has employed its financial muscle to acquire competition—purchasing Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and Oculus rather than competing on an even playing field. The ill-fated 2013 bid to acquire Snapchat allegedly left CEO Mark Zuckerberg frustrated and is now at the heart of the FTC’s case.

In addition, new court documents allege that Meta has bullied smaller startups into exclusive deals, providing them with access to Meta’s enormous user base in return. These new developments could bolster the FTC’s case that Meta’s business practices have been constructed to stifle competition instead of innovation.

</excerpt>

Users in Nigeria could be cut off from Facebook and Instagram after parent company Meta stated that it was threatened with huge fines and “unrealistic” regulatory requests from the Nigerian government.

Meta Faces Massive Fines in Nigeria

Three Nigerian regulatory bodies fined the US social media giant a total of over $290m (£218m) last year for contravening several laws and regulations.

Meta lost a bid in a recent attempt to appeal the rulings at the federal high court in Abuja.

“The applicant may be forced to effectively shut down the Facebook and Instagram services in Nigeria in order to mitigate the risk of enforcement measures,” the company said in the court papers.

Meta is the parent company of WhatsApp but made no reference to the messaging service in its announcement. The high court’s order is for the company to pay the fines by the end of June.

Facebook is the most widely used social media platform in Nigeria and is accessed by tens of millions of people in the country for everyday communication and news sharing. It is also an essential tool for most of Nigeria’s small online enterprises.

Breakdown of the Fines Against Meta

Last year, Meta was requested to pay three fines in July:

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) ordered a $220m fine for suspected anti-competitive behavior.

The ad regulator hit the firm with a $37.5m fine for unauthorized advertising.

Nigeria’s Data Protection Commission (NDPC) accused Meta of breaching data privacy regulations and imposed a $32.8m fine.

Allegations of Data Violations

FCCPC chief executive Adamu Abdullahi stated that investigations conducted in partnership with the data commission from May 2021 to December 2023 uncovered “invasive practices against data subjects/consumers in Nigeria” but did not detail what they were.

Meta wrote in its filing to the court that its “primary concern” was with the data commission, which it faulted for “misinterpreting” data privacy laws.

Meta’s Dispute Over Data Privacy Regulations

In particular, the commission has required Meta to obtain prior approval before exporting any personal data from Nigeria a requirement that Meta described as “unrealistic.”

The data commission also made other requirements.

Meta was instructed that it should offer an icon leading to learning videos regarding data privacy threats. Such content would be produced jointly with government-approved schools and non-profit groups.

The NDPC required these videos to emphasize the threats posed by “manipulative and unfair data processing” that may place Nigerian users at risk of health and financial hazards.

Meta termed the demands of the NDPC as unrealistic, stating that the agency has not “properly interpreted the laws governing data privacy.”

These glasses let users interact with Meta AI, capture photos and videos hands-free, and even translate text in real-time.
</excerpt>

Meta is set to launch its AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses in India

This was announced in a recent blog post

These glasses let users interact with Meta AI, capture photos and videos hands-free, and more

You are walking down the street, wearing a pair of Ray-Bans that don’t just block sunlight — but talk to you. Not in a creepy way, but more like Tony Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S.- whispering useful bits of information into your ear. That’s the promise of Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses, Ray-Ban Meta, which are finally making their way to India. Sleek, stylish, and surprisingly smart, these next-gen wearables promise to blend fashion with futuristic tech, offering hands-free photo capture, live translation, and real-time AI conversations — all without you having to pull out your phone.

Meta’s AI-powered glasses coming to India soon

Meta announced the arrival of Meta Ray-Ban to India in a recent blog post.

“Coming soon, we’re launching Ray-Ban Meta glasses in Mexico, India, and the United Arab Emirates. We can’t wait for more people across the globe to get in on the action,” the blog post read.

Meta hasn’t revealed an exact launch date or price for the Indian market just yet, but based on international pricing (starting at $299 in the US), they won’t come cheap. Still, for early adopters and tech enthusiasts, the blend of AI, AR and wearable design could make them worth every rupee.

Ray-Ban Meta coming to India: Top features

At first glance, Meta’s smart glasses look like a stylish pair of Ray-Bans. But hidden inside the frames is a tiny camera and speakers, plus microphones that let you interact with Meta AI using just your voice. Want to snap a picture? Say “Hey Meta, take a photo.” Need to identify a landmark or translate a sign? Just ask the glasses. The newest update adds even more intelligence — now, Meta AI can see what you’re looking at and give answers based on that visual input.

“And coming soon to general availability in the US and Canada, you’ll be able to hold a conversation with Meta AI on your Ray-Ban Meta glasses where our smart assistant can see what you see continuously and converse with you more naturally. In the middle of cooking dinner and you don’t have as much butter as you thought? Ask Meta AI to see if there’s a substitute based on what it sees in your pantry or refrigerator. And follow it up by asking which wine in your rack pairs best with the meal. You can speak as you normally would without needing to say “Hey, Meta” each time, and Meta AI will respond in kind for a smooth, natural experience. Just say, “Hey Meta, start live AI” to begin,” Meta revealed in its blog post.

Here are some features of the smart glasses that are worth noticing:

Talk to Meta AI

Think of it as having a digital assistant built into your glasses. You can say “Hey Meta” and ask questions, get directions, summarise texts, or even ask what you’re looking at — all through voice.

Capture Moments, Hands-Free

They come with a built-in 12MP camera and microphones, so you can take photos and videos without touching your phone. Just say a command or press a button on the frame.

Listen to Music & Take Calls

The glasses have open-ear speakers, meaning you can play music or answer calls while still hearing the world around you — no earbuds needed.

Translate on the Go

One of the coolest features rolling out is live translation. Look at a menu or a sign in a foreign language and ask the glasses what it says — they’ll translate it in real time.

Identify Objects

Point your glasses at a landmark, a flower, or even a meal, and ask, “What am I looking at?” The AI will try to tell you — like a real-time Wikipedia for the world in front of you.

</excerpt>

The EU tech tax on US tech giants is back in the spotlight as relations between Brussels and Washington heat up. The European Union has threatened to impose targeted digital taxes on digital giants such as Meta and Google if trade negotiations with the Trump administration break down.

Though both sides signed off on a 90-day tariff truce—after Trump’s abrupt about-face on tariffs—the EU indicates it’s prepared to strike back if talks break down. This time, though, the battle isn’t about soybeans or steel but dominance of the digital economy.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for tariffs on digital ad revenues and stricter enforcement of digital market rules. The US, for its part, accuses these measures of being veiled protectionism against American companies.

Even under pressure, Brussels maintains its digital regulations are not up for negotiation. As the clock starts ticking on fresh tariffs, the EU’s warning signal marks a change in trade war tactics—with Big Tech now at the center of an impending transatlantic showdown.

EU Bides Its Time, But Lines Up the Gun

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the bloc will bide 90 days before triggering new tariffs. Yet she was explicit: if negotiations break down, the EU will target US tech firms. A likely option involves taxing their European ad revenues. “We wish for a balanced result,” she said to Financial Times. “If not, our retaliatory measures will be triggered.”

Trump Tariffs Trigger Digital Strategy

The threat follows Trump’s unexpected flip-flop. He initially declared steep tariffs on EU products, then suspended them. The EU retaliated by withholding its own scheduled duties—valued at €20 billion on products such as motorcycles, soybeans, and cosmetics. But this time, it’s not only about products. The EU wishes to strike where it hurts: tech supremacy.

Digital Rules Remain Unscathed

The EU is being asked by the US to unwind digital rules. But Brussels is not moving. Regulations such as the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act will remain intact. Von der Leyen indicated the EU will not go back on what she referred to as “untouchable” digital legislation. Trump officials consider these regulations to be hidden taxes on American technology.

The fight is now not just about tariffs. It’s about who dominates the digital economy. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic has been negotiating with senior US officials. But the warning is clear—if negotiations hit a roadblock, Europe will levy tax on tech.

With Big Tech now being at the eye of trade tensions, the EU digital tax on US big tech firms may be the next hotspot in an escalating world economic confrontation.

</excerpt>

Meta, the owner of Facebook, is scheduled to go on trial next week in a historic antitrust case filed by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), charging the tech company with misusing its market power by buying Instagram and WhatsApp to stifle potential competition in the future.

The case, to be tried in a Washington federal court, is a severe setback to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg‘s expectations that Donald Trump’s possible return to the White House would relieve regulatory heat on Big Tech. In spite of repeated White House meetings and updated content policies friendly to Republicans by Zuckerberg’s lobbying, the case is proceeding as scheduled.

The FTC, charged by Chair Andrew Ferguson, wishes to compel Meta to sell off Instagram and WhatsApp, which became international platforms following their respective takeovers in 2012 and 2014. The regulator contends that the motive of Meta was to mute nascent dangers to Facebook’s supremacy, drawing on internal memo exchanges where Zuckerberg admitted Instagram’s potential as “really scary.

Meta will justify the acquisitions by stating that substantial investments changed both firms into their present profitable shapes. They will also point out that the FTC originally approved both transactions, and a reversal would be unfair.

Although a eleventh-hour White House intervention is technically possible, experts indicate that it’s unlikely. Cornell Law School professor George Hay explained that even if Trump were willing to reconsider the case, persuading both the President and the FTC that the suit has no merit would be a high hurdle to clear.

This is one of five prominent antitrust cases now aimed at Big Tech, with Apple, Amazon, and Google also facing scrutiny. The trial, projected to take at least eight weeks, will involve testimony from Zuckerberg, ex-COO Sheryl Sandberg, and executives at competing companies.

Judge James Boasberg previously cautioned that the FTC might struggle to establish its allegations under the strict trial circumstances.

</excerpt>

Meta is being sued for $2.4bn (£1.8bn) by the owner of Facebook, alleging that it stoked violence in Ethiopia following a ruling by the Kenyan high court that a court case against the US tech company could proceed.

Allegations Against Facebook’s Algorithm

The case filed by two Ethiopian citizens challenges Facebook to change its algorithm to prevent promoting of hateful content and violence inciting, and recruit additional content moderators in Africa. It is also asking for a $2.4bn “restitution fund” for the victims of hate and violence stirred on Facebook.

Victims and Their Stories

One of the applicants is Prof Meareg Amare Abrha’s son, who was killed in his house in Ethiopia after his address and threatening messages were posted on Facebook in 2021 when there was a civil war in the nation. Another applicant is Fisseha Tekle, a former researcher with Amnesty International who released reports on violence perpetrated during the conflict in Tigray in northern Ethiopia and was sent death threats on Facebook.

Jurisdiction Ruling by Kenyan High Court

Meta had claimed that Kenyan courts, where Facebook’s Ethiopia moderators operated at the time, lacked jurisdiction over the case. The Kenyan high court in Nairobi decided on Thursday that the case fell within the jurisdiction of the country’s courts.

Plaintiffs Speak Out

Abrham Meareg, son of Meareg, stated: “I appreciate the court’s ruling today. It is shameful that Meta would make the argument that they shouldn’t be held accountable to the rule of law in Kenya. African lives matter.”

Tekle explained he cannot go back home to Ethiopia due to Meta’s inability to make Facebook secure. “Meta can’t turn back the harm it’s caused, but it can fundamentally alter how it moderates harmful content on all its platforms to ensure that no one else has to endure what I have endured,” he stated. “I’m glad this issue is now going to be heard by the court in its entirety.”

Support from Human Rights Organizations

The case, backed by non-profit groups such as Foxglove and Amnesty International, also calls for a formal apology from Meta for Meareg’s murder. The Katiba Institute, an NGO based in Kenya that specializes in the Kenyan constitution, is the third party to the case.

Investigation into Facebook’s Role

In 2022 an investigation by the Observer and Bureau of Investigative Journalism discovered that Facebook was allowing users to put up content fueling violence via hate and disinformation, though it knew this was inflaming tensions in Tigray.

Response to the Accusations by Meta

Meta denied the accusations then, stating it had “invested in safety and security measures” to address hate and inflammatory content as well as “aggressive measures to prevent the spread of misinformation” in Ethiopia.

Recent Policy Changes by Meta

The business announced in January that it was deleting factcheckers and “dramatically” decreasing the level of censorship on the platform, although it would still address unlawful and high-severity violations.

Meta said it did not comment on ongoing legal matters.

</excerpt>

Mark Zuckerberg’s company, Meta, is planning to build a massive data center for artificial intelligence (AI) projects. Reports suggest the project could cost over $200 billion. If approved, this would be one of the largest investments in AI infrastructure.

Meta Explores Possible Locations

To move forward, Meta executives have informed data center developers about potential sites. The company is currently considering Louisiana, Wyoming, and Texas. Moreover, senior leaders have already visited these locations this month to assess their suitability.

Meta’s AI Spending vs. Rivals

At the same time, Zuckerberg announced last month that Meta would invest up to $65 billion this year to expand AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, Microsoft plans to spend $80 billion in 2025 on data centers. In contrast, Amazon expects to invest $100 billion, which is a significant increase from $75 billion in 2024.

Meta Faces Hiring Bias Lawsuit

On another front, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday that Meta must face a lawsuit over its hiring practices. As a result, three U.S. citizens have accused Meta of rejecting their job applications despite their qualifications. They claim the company favors foreign workers on H-1B visas to reduce labor costs. The plaintiffs, IT worker Purushothaman Rajaram, software engineer Ekta Bhatia, and data scientist Qun Wang, argue that Meta systematically preferred visa holders over American citizens.

Meta Denies Allegations

However, Meta has strongly denied the claims, calling them “baseless.” The company insists it did not discriminate and argues that it would not have hired the plaintiffs, regardless of their citizenship.

Even so, the judge dismissed Meta’s defense that 15% of its U.S. workforce holds H-1B visas, compared to just 0.5% of the overall workforce. Furthermore, the judge referred to Meta’s 2021 settlement, in which it paid $14.25 million to resolve allegations that it had excluded American workers in favor of foreign hires.

</excerpt>

Meta, the social media behemoth, is setting up a new building in Bengaluru, according to TechCrunch. This comes after the firm laid off some 5% of its employees in a move that mostly involved those classified as “low performers.”

Focus on Enterprise Engineering

According to the report, the new center in Bengaluru will be part of Meta’s Enterprise Engineering team that focuses on creating bespoke internal tools instead of contributing to Meta’s mass market platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

Meta’s Presence in India

Meta currently has several offices in India, with operational offices in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurugram, New Delhi, and Mumbai. These offices, however, do not have many job vacancies and are primarily in non-engineering functions.

Meta hiring for 41 Roles in Bengaluru

Even as there is a wider slowdown in recruitment, Meta is aggressively hiring for 41 roles at its Bengaluru campus, according to its careers portal. The majority of these job postings were made in the last month.

These are largely software engineering and machine learning roles, with some targeted specifically at chip design for Meta’s data centers.

Leadership Recruitment in India

Also, Meta is looking for an “experienced Engineering Director to develop and lead our engineering organization in India,” as per one of its LinkedIn job listings quoted in the report.

Meta’s Move Towards Engineering in India

While these 41 roles are a mere fraction of Meta’s 1,700 worldwide job listings, this step is a strategic move. Meta has not significantly depended on India as an engineering base in the past, so this growth is a significant development.

Investment of Several Billion Dollars in Worldwide Digital Highways

Meta says Project Waterworth is a multibillion-dollar, multi-year project intended to enhance the dependability and scope of digital networks across the world. The undersea cable will establish three new maritime corridors offering industry-leading, high-speed connection to places including the United States, India, Brazil, and South Africa.

In its statement, Meta said, “Project Waterworth will be a multi-billion dollar, multi-year investment to strengthen the scale and reliability of the world’s digital highways by opening three new oceanic corridors with the abundant, high-speed connectivity needed to drive AI innovation around the world.”

Building Strong Digital Global Infrastructure

Handling more than 95 percent of intercontinental traffic, subsea cable networks underlie worldwide digital infrastructure. Meta intends to gently bury the cable system up to 7,000 meters deep in high-risk fault zones, including shallower coastal waters, to stop ship anchors and other dangers from causing damage.

The plan seeks to drive technical advancement in the linked areas, foster economic cooperation, and enable digital inclusion.

India’s Contribution to the Waterworth Initiative

Emphasizing how Waterworth will speed up India’s digital economy, Meta particularly noted the quickly expanding digital infrastructure of the country.

The firm said, “For example, in India, where we’ve already seen significant growth and investment in digital infrastructure, Waterworth will help accelerate this progress and support the country’s ambitious plans for its digital economy.”

Following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, this project was also mentioned in the US-India Joint Leaders’ Statement earlier this month, further highlighting its strategic relevance.

Advancing artificial intelligence everywhere

Apart from improving connectivity, Meta sees Project Waterworth as an AI development game-changer. Across international markets, the new high-speed network will support faster and more efficient artificial intelligence interactions.

Meta added, “With Project Waterworth, we can help ensure that the benefits of AI and other emerging technologies are available to everyone, regardless of where they live or work.”

Project Waterworth will help to transform international digital infrastructure, therefore propelling financial development and technological advancement across continents, as Meta launches this daring undertaking.

Affected workers will receive notices, except in some European countries. The company prioritizes machine learning engineers for critical roles.
</excerpt>

Tech giant Meta Platforms is set to initiate company-wide layoffs next week, even as it accelerates the hiring of machine learning engineers, according to internal memos seen by Reuters.

The layoffs, expected to impact around 5% of the company’s workforce, will begin Monday at 5 a.m. local time in most affected regions, including the United States. Employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will be exempt due to local labor laws, while notifications for other countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa will be issued between February 11 and February 18.

Meta’s Shift in Workforce Strategy

Janelle Gale, Meta’s Head of People, referred to the terminations as “performance-based cuts” in an internal memo, emphasizing that the company was trimming its lowest-performing employees. Unlike previous large-scale layoffs, Meta has decided to keep its offices open on Monday and will not release any additional public updates regarding the decision.

Prioritising AI Talent

Despite the layoffs, Meta is expediting the hiring of machine learning engineers and other critical engineering roles. Peng Fan, the company’s VP of Engineering for Monetisation, informed employees that the hiring process would take place between February 11 and March 13.

“Thank you for your continued support in helping us achieve our accelerated hiring goals and better align with our company’s priorities for 2025,” Fan stated.

Ongoing Workforce Restructuring

Meta confirmed last month that it would be cutting low-performing employees while backfilling some positions. The company has been reshaping its workforce, focusing heavily on artificial intelligence and monetisation strategies to remain competitive in the evolving tech landscape.

A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the latest developments.

</excerpt>

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, will initiate its expected company-wide layoffs next week while simultaneously speeding up the hiring of machine learning engineers. Internal memos, obtained by Reuters, said that the layoffs targeting the company’s “lowest performers” will begin at 5 am local time on Monday in most regions, including the US.

The layoff of employees will not be felt by workers in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands as those are restricted by local rules, while employees from other countries including Europe, Asia, and Africa will be informed from February 11 up to February 18.

A Meta spokesperson wouldn’t comment on the memos.

Meta, last month, announced it was cutting around 5% of its staff by referring to it as “performance terminations.” The company further indicated that some of the backfilled positions will be occupied. Notably, Meta is not closing its offices on Monday, and the firm will not update on further layoffs, according to the memo sent by Janelle Gale, Meta’s Head of People.

In a separate memo, Meta VP of Engineering for Monetization Peng Fan pointed out that the staff needs to be available for an accelerated hiring process for machine learning engineers and other key engineering positions scheduled for February 11 through March 13. The memo ended with appreciation from the staff for supporting Meta in its hiring efforts and getting back on track with 2025 goals.

</excerpt>

Amid the looming possibility of TikTok’s ban in the United States, Meta, led by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, is offering a substantial incentive to content creators from the popular third-party app to switch over to Facebook and Instagram. Meta has announced that selected influencers will receive up to $5,000 in bonuses if they consistently post content on its platforms for over three months.

The company’s “Breakthrough Bonus Program” will reward creators who meet the criteria of regularly posting on Facebook and Instagram during their first 90 days. The amount of the bonus will depend on an evaluation of their social media presence.

By sharing content on Meta platforms, these creators will also gain access to Facebook’s content monetization program, which allows them to earn additional income from their posts. Additionally, Meta is offering a free trial of Meta Verified, which includes the coveted blue checkmark and provides exclusive features to help accounts gain visibility. Normally, this service costs between $15 to $120 per month.

While Meta did not specify that this offer was solely aimed at TikTok creators, the timing coincides with TikTok’s ongoing ban in US app stores. Despite a temporary reprieve due to President Trump’s 75-day delay, TikTok remains unavailable for download, and its future in the US is uncertain.

TikTok claims to have 170 million users in the US, many of whom depend on the platform for their income. This leaves many content creators looking for an alternative platform if TikTok’s services are cut off.

This isn’t the first time Meta has targeted TikTok’s user base. The company recently launched an app called “Edits,” which bears a strong resemblance to TikTok’s video editing tool, CapCut, which went offline following the ByteDance ban on January 19.

Additionally, Meta introduced a new “affiliate link experience” for users’ shoppable content, allowing users to place affiliate links directly on their videos, similar to how it works on TikTok.

The influence of TikTok is also noticeable in Instagram’s design changes. The platform now features rectangular posts and videos, mirroring the appearance of TikTok’s content layout.

</excerpt>

Meta is working to fix a problem on Instagram by which a “results hidden” message appears in users’ search tabs when one searches for terms such as “Democrat” or “Democrats.” The controversy has stirred as social media users blamed the platform for taking sides politically. The problem arose after President Donald Trump was inaugurated on January 20, when Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg attended the ceremony.

Accusations of Political Bias

The glitch has raised concerns because it comes after a significant political event. Some users believe that the issue could be intentional, arguing that it highlights potential partisan behavior by Meta. The error has resulted in the hashtag ” #Democrat” showing no posts, while the hashtag ” #Republican” has over 3.3 million posts.

While Meta says that the issue is technical, it has raised the accusation of political favoritism. Social media expert Matt Navarra to BBC said the issue is more than likely a technical error but “embarrassing” for Instagram. He stated that in this politically charged atmosphere, even seemingly unintentional problems like this fuel conspiracy theories against Meta.

Search Issue on Instagram

According to Instagram users, when searching for “Democrats” manually, they get a message saying, “We’ve hidden these results. Results for the term you searched for may contain sensitive content.” The glitch also affects the search for “Republicans,” but results are still visible when searching for the singular term “Republican.”

Meta issued a statement by acknowledging the error and said, “We are aware of an error that’s affecting hashtags across the political spectrum, and we are working quickly to resolve it.” But, the scandal only gets bigger because some users think this glitch says much about Meta’s political view.

Zuckerberg’s Relationship with the Trump Regime

The controversy has been further fueled by Mark Zuckerberg’s presence at Trump’s inauguration. This follows several moves that have seen Zuckerberg and other tech executives align more closely with the Republican administration. In January, Meta announced a change in its approach to content moderation policies, which Zuckerberg linked to what he called the “cultural tipping point” Trump’s re-election represented.

Joel Kaplan, a former Republican staffer, has recently taken over as Meta’s global affairs chief, replacing Sir Nick Clegg. This move also raised eyebrows, as Kaplan’s connections to the Republican Party may further intensify accusations of political favoritism.

Meta’s Response and Future Actions

Meta’s ongoing investigation into the Instagram glitch and its commitment to fixing the issue quickly will be closely watched. As a major player in social media, Meta’s reputation and influence are at stake, and it risks further scrutiny if the problem is not resolved swiftly. In the wake of the controversy, some critics fear that if the glitch remains unresolved, it could become another point of contention in the ongoing debate about tech companies’ role in shaping political discourse.

Meta Faces Growing Scrutiny Over Content Moderation and Political Influence

Critics say that Meta’s handling of the technical issue raises serious concerns, including the possibility of the platform’s political neutrality being compromised. Fuel to the fire was added in the form of past actions by the company and its connections with the Trump administration. All eyes are on the platform’s next steps as Meta works towards resolving the issue.

</excerpt>

Meta the parent company of Facebook, recently issued an apology after Mark Zuckerberg’s remark about India’s 2024 elections, facing backlash from officials who emphasized the government’s decisive victory and public trust.

During a podcast with US-based host Joe Rogan, Zuckerberg claimed that public dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic led to the defeat of most incumbent administrations, including India’s.

Meta Apology for Zuckerberg’s Remark

On Monday, Bhartiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey had said that a Parliamentary panel will summon representatives of Meta between January 20 and 24, seeking an apology for Mark Zuckerberg’s remarks.

As the world’s largest democracy with over 640 million voters participating in the 2024 elections, India saw the incumbent NDA government led by PM Narendra Modi secure a decisive victory. Ashwini Vaishnaw reiterated that the election results reaffirmed the public’s trust in Modi’s leadership.

Shivnath Thukral, who is the Meta India’s vice president of public policy shared a post on X, stated “Dear Honorable Minister Ashwini Vaishnav , Mark’s observation that many incumbent parties were not re-elected in 2024 elections holds true for several countries, But not India.” “We would like to apologize for this inadvertent error.
Implications for Meta Operations in India

India represents a biggest market for Meta With a vast users base across its platform. The recent incident underscores tech challenges global tech companies face in navigating complex.

Meta India’s apology is seen as an effort to repair relations and reinforce its commitment to the country’s thriving digital ecosystem.

This includes removing tampons from men’s bathrooms and ending DEI programs. The company is also overhauling its fact-checking system.
</excerpt>

With Donald Trump ready to take on his role as the 47th President of the United States, Meta-the parent company of Facebook-issued wide-ranging policy updates that appeared to align with what is being projected as the conservative nature of the new government. Among these changes was a decision that sparked huge debates: Meta’s removal of tampons from their offices and not to allow it to be available in men’s restrooms at those premises-this did not go unscathed with a wide outcry on social media.

In an internal memo, Meta’s Vice President of Human Resources, Janelle Gale, revealed that it had canceled a number of DEI programs. According to her, “the legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing.” She said that the company will instead focus on practices that are equitable and consistent with all groups rather than on equity and inclusion training. The company will also dissolve the DEI team and revamp the way it selects its suppliers.

Elimination of Tampons

This is the decision of removing tampons from men’s bathrooms, a facility provided by Meta for its nonbinary and transgender employees, which has gone viral on the social media. Many have commented on X with disappointment, “Meta’s idea of inclusion was always performative.”.Now they’re just showing their true colours.” Others mocked the move, saying, “Guess Meta’s next step is banning empathy from the office altogether.”

However, some users argued in its defense, calling the change “common sense” and conservative in values, as in this response, “Not totally support this decision.”

Wider changes in Meta’s policy

This is part of a broader transformation at Meta that also includes axing its US fact-checking program. Its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has said that he is replacing the program with a community note system like X, claiming that “fact-checkers have been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created.”

These sweeping policy changes are significant shifts in the approach that appears to now align more closely with conservative policies influenced by the incoming administration. It remains to be seen whether such decisions will help improve Meta’s public perception or dig the hole of polarization deeper.

Meta has recently introduced a new content moderation policy that has stirred significant controversy within the company. The new guidelines allow users to describe LGBTQ+ individuals as having “mental illness,” a move that has shocked and angered many employees. This policy change comes as part of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader push to prioritize “free expression” over stricter content moderation practices. However, the decision has led to widespread criticism, especially among LGBTQ+ employees who feel that their rights are being undermined.

Employee Reactions and Mental Health Impact

The new policy has caused a wave of dissatisfaction across Meta’s workforce. Many employees have expressed their outrage on Meta’s internal platform, Workplace, with some openly calling for transparency regarding the decision-making process. A number of LGBTQ+ employees have taken time off work to cope with the mental health impact of the policy shift, while others are contemplating resigning. The mood within the company is one of shock and confusion, with some describing the situation as “total chaos.” The morale among queer employees is notably low, and many feel disheartened by what they see as a betrayal of Meta’s core values of inclusivity and diversity.

Meta Leadership Defends the Changes

Meta’s leadership has defended the policy changes as an effort to curb “mission creep” in content moderation. They argue that the policy shift will foster more open conversations about divisive issues. However, many employees view this as a thinly veiled excuse for allowing harmful content to flourish, particularly against the LGBTQ+ community. Questions have arisen about whether the decision is in line with scientific research and Meta’s commitment to protecting vulnerable communities. There are also calls for more transparency regarding how the decision was made and whether LGBTQ+ advocacy groups were consulted.

History of Content Moderation Controversies

This is not the first time Meta has faced criticism over its content moderation practices. The company has long been accused of inconsistently enforcing its policies and failing to protect marginalized groups adequately. In 2024, reports emerged showing that Meta had significantly reduced its content moderation teams, leading to concerns that the company was neglecting its responsibility to maintain safe and inclusive online spaces. The new policy is seen by many as part of a growing trend among tech companies to reduce moderation efforts, which critics argue allows harmful content to thrive.

Political Motives Behind the Shift?

Some employees and analysts suspect that Meta’s policy change is politically motivated. Critics claim that Zuckerberg is trying to appeal to right-leaning audiences, particularly ahead of the 2024 US elections. They argue that Meta’s inconsistent enforcement of rules, along with allegations of bias, suggests a deliberate attempt to win favor with conservative figures, including former President Donald Trump. The shift in content moderation could be seen as part of a broader strategy to navigate the political landscape in the lead-up to the elections.

Zuckerberg Brushes Off Criticism

Zuckerberg has responded to the criticism by dismissing it as “virtue signaling” and claiming that most users would welcome the changes. On the platform Threads, he suggested that the new policy would allow for more open dialogue and free speech. However, LGBTQ+ advocates argue that the changes normalize harmful rhetoric and put the safety of users at risk. As dissent within the company grows, Meta’s reputation as a company that supports inclusivity is increasingly being called into question. How the company addresses this growing backlash remains to be seen, but for many employees, the damage may already be irreversible.

</excerpt>

In a landmark decision, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled plans to overhaul Facebook’s content moderation policies by replacing fact-checkers with a community-driven system inspired by Elon Musk’s X, formerly Twitter. The change will also affect other Meta platforms, including Instagram and Threads, aiming to foster free speech and rebuild trust.

Elon Musk, known for his advocacy of free expression, praised the move, calling it “cool” in a post on X. Explaining the shift, Zuckerberg cited political bias in fact-checking as a key issue. “Fact-checkers have been too politically biased, undermining trust instead of building it,” he stated in a video message. To address this, Meta will introduce a “community notes” feature where users collaboratively provide context to potentially misleading posts.

Meta also plans to relocate its content moderation teams from California to Texas to reduce concerns about political bias, while focusing on illegal activities and severe violations, such as terrorism and child exploitation. Starting in the US, Meta will discontinue its fact-checking partnerships with third parties. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, noted that the X model demonstrates how empowering communities can provide balanced oversight and encourage more open discourse.

Meta has announced plans to ease certain content restrictions while continuing to prioritize addressing illegal activities and serious violations. The company emphasized this shift as a step toward promoting transparency and enhancing free speech across its platforms.

</excerpt>

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced major changes to the company’s content moderation strategy, focusing on free speech and less censorship on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. In a recent video message, Zuckerberg revealed plans to eliminate fact-checkers, opting instead for a community-driven moderation system akin to the one used by X, where users provide context and caveats to controversial posts.

Zuckerberg cited political bias as a primary reason for discontinuing Meta’s current fact-checking system, arguing it had eroded trust. He also stated that content moderation teams would be relocated from California to Texas to address concerns about bias. Acknowledging the risks, Zuckerberg admitted the new approach would likely result in fewer harmful posts being caught but stressed the importance of prioritizing free expression.

Here is the full video from Mark Zuckerberg announcing the end of censorship and misinformation policies.

I highly recommend you watch all of it as tonally it is one of the biggest indications of “elections have consequences” I have ever seen pic.twitter.com/aYpkxrTqWe

— Saagar Enjeti (@esaagar) January 7, 2025

The reforms will further relax restrictions over sensitive subjects, such as immigration and gender issues, which he described as totally out of sync with mainstream discourses. Zuckerberg vowed to cooperate with President Donald Trump in combating international moves aimed at silencing American tech giants, which, according to Zuckerberg, aim at censoring Americans.

Zuckerberg also hit out at European and Latin America’s regulatory settings, accusing the latter of hampering innovation with censorship laws and secret court orders.

This comes after Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, resigned and will be replaced by Joel Kaplan, a well-known Republican. Meta’s oversight board welcomed the shift towards community moderation but emphasized that broad input from platform users is necessary to ensure effective and speech-friendly policies.

Mr Zuckerberg framed these as a return to his 2019 position, emphasizing the value of balancing removing harmful content from the platform against free speech and admitting that allowing the decision sometimes means trading-off increased harmful content slipping through with the focus solely on illegal, high-severity violations.

With this new moderation model, Meta hopes to transition to a more open discourse and leverage its huge user base in the management of the content of the platform.

Meta has introduced a new feature that uses AI to generate creative images of users in different scenarios. These images are placed directly in Instagram feeds. For instance, a Reddit user shared their experience of seeing AI-generated images of themselves in a “maze of mirrors.” Interestingly, these images were not ads, but personalized content appearing on their timeline.

How It Works

The user had previously uploaded selfies to Meta’s “Imagine” tool. This AI tool enhances users’ photos by generating new versions. However, they were surprised when the tool went a step further by creating images of them in imaginative scenarios, like the maze, and adding playful captions such as “reflecting on life.”

Initial Reactions

When the Reddit post appeared, many were skeptical. Some users dismissed the images as fake, while others suggested conspiracy theories. To clear up the confusion, the user shared screenshots as proof. Eventually, Meta confirmed the authenticity of the feature. According to the company, these AI-generated images are part of a new feature announced in September, which aims to create personalized content based on users’ interests. For example, the tool imagines users as astronauts or video game characters.

The “Imagine Yourself” Tool

The “Imagine Yourself” tool enables users to upload multiple selfies, which the AI then transforms into creative versions. These new versions can range from simple settings to more exciting scenarios like outer space. Additionally, the AI sometimes automatically inserts these whimsical images into users’ feeds without asking for permission.

Meta has explained that this feature is part of a broader plan to integrate more AI-generated content into Facebook and Instagram. Users can engage with these images by swiping to explore different versions or tapping prompts to customize the content further.

AI’s Growing Role on Social Media

This feature is just one example of how AI is becoming more integrated into social media. Over the same weekend, Meta’s AI-generated profiles went viral, though they were later removed. Clearly, Meta is working to embed more AI-driven content into its apps, even using AI-generated images of users themselves.

While some find the new approach entertaining, others raise concerns about privacy and consent. Nonetheless, Meta seems confident that users are ready for more AI in their digital lives. Whether they are truly prepared for this shift remains to be seen.

</excerpt>

Meta has removed several AI-generated profiles from Facebook and Instagram. These profiles were first introduced in 2023, but they sparked a viral controversy when users rediscovered them.

Launch and Removal of AI Profiles

Meta initially launched the AI profiles in September 2023. However, most of these profiles were removed last year. Recently, Meta executive Connor Hayes revealed plans to roll out more AI characters. In fact, one upcoming feature will allow users to create their own AI profiles on Instagram and Facebook.

Meta’s AI Vision

According to Hayes, “We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind of in the same way that accounts do,” as he told The Financial Times. He further stated that Meta’s priority in the next two years is to make its apps “more entertaining and engaging.” As part of this, AI profiles will have bios, profile pictures, and the ability to generate and share content.

AI Profiles and User Interaction

The automated accounts were designed to post AI-generated images on Instagram and engage with users via messages on Messenger. For instance, Liv described herself as a “proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller,” while Carter presented himself as a relationship coach. Both accounts were clearly labeled as managed by Meta.

Viral Screenshots and Controversy

Soon after, screenshots of conversations with these AI profiles went viral. Notably, Liv responded to a question from The Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah, claiming that her creator team was predominantly white and male. “It was a pretty glaring omission given my identity,” Liv said.

Meta Addresses the Issue

As the controversy grew, the profiles started disappearing from the platforms. Some users complained that they couldn’t block the accounts, but Meta spokesperson Liz Sweeney clarified that it was a bug. She explained, “These accounts were managed by humans,” adding that Meta was removing them to fix the issue.

Sweeney further addressed confusion surrounding a recent Financial Times article. “This article is about our vision for AI characters existing on our platforms over time, not announcing any new product,” she explained.

Shutting Down the AI Profiles

Finally, Meta had launched 28 AI personas in 2023, but all of them were shut down on Friday. “We identified the bug that was impacting the ability for people to block those AIs and are removing those accounts to fix the issue,” Sweeney added.

Nick Clegg, the former Deputy Prime Minister of the UK, has announced he will step down as Meta’s president of global affairs. He shared the news in a Facebook post on Thursday, confirming his departure after nearly seven years with the company.

Joe Kaplan to Take Over

Replacing Clegg will be Joe Kaplan, his current deputy. Kaplan, who previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff under President George W. Bush, is well-known for managing Meta’s relations with Republicans.

Smooth Transition Period

Clegg will spend the next few months facilitating the transition. During this time, he will also represent Meta at international events. Afterward, Clegg plans to move on to “new adventures.”

Trump’s Criticism of Meta

Interestingly, Clegg’s resignation comes just before Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Trump has long accused Meta of censoring conservative speech, particularly after the company suspended his accounts in 2021 following the Capitol riot. However, it appears that tensions may have eased, as Trump and Zuckerberg have reportedly dined together at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate since the election.

Clegg’s Role at Meta

Clegg joined Facebook in 2018 after losing his parliamentary seat. He was instrumental in launching Meta’s Oversight Board, a panel that advises on policies related to content moderation, privacy, and more. Additionally, Clegg has been outspoken about Elon Musk, criticizing him for turning X (formerly Twitter) into a “one-man hyper-partisan hobby horse.”

Looking Ahead

In his farewell message, Clegg expressed immense gratitude for his time at Meta. He noted that his tenure coincided with significant changes in the relationship between “big tech” and societal pressures. “I hope I have played some role in seeking to bridge the very different worlds of tech and politics,” he said.

Finally, Clegg expressed confidence in Kaplan’s ability to take over, stating, “He is quite clearly the right person for the right job at the right time!”

</excerpt>

Meta, the tech company behind Facebook and Instagram, is facing strong criticism after revealing plans to introduce millions of AI-driven bots on its platforms. According to a report from the Financial Times, these bots are designed to mimic real user accounts, potentially inflating the platforms’ user activity. Meta’s vice president of product for generative AI, Connor Hayes, confirmed that the bots will feature bios, profile pictures, and the ability to create and share AI-generated content.

Despite no official timeline for a full rollout, Hayes disclosed that hundreds of thousands of these AI characters already exist in a private testing phase. This move comes in response to the company’s ongoing struggle to retain active user engagement, especially as Meta faces increasing competition from other platforms.

Mixed Reactions: Concerns Over Authenticity and Advertiser Trust

The announcement has stirred strong reactions on social media, particularly on platforms like Reddit. Users have expressed concerns that the introduction of AI bots may be an attempt to mask Meta’s declining user base. Critics argue that these bots will compromise the authenticity of user interactions and create misleading engagement metrics. Such concerns are particularly troubling for advertisers, who rely on accurate data to target real customers.

On the r/futurology subreddit, users raised the ethical implications of the move. Some questioned whether advertisers would be unknowingly paying for fake engagement, while others feared the bots could clog feeds already overwhelmed by algorithms. For many, the addition of AI bots only adds to frustrations with a platform increasingly dominated by irrelevant content.

Advertising Implications: A Threat to Trust and Transparency

Meta’s reliance on advertising revenue has drawn scrutiny over the legality and transparency of its new strategy. Critics argue that promoting inflated engagement figures through AI bots could lead to misleading advertising practices. If advertisers are unknowingly paying for interactions generated by bots rather than real users, the trust that brands place in Meta’s advertising system could be severely damaged.

The ethical concerns surrounding the use of AI bots are also mounting. While some view the bots as a potential short-term solution to boost activity on Meta’s platforms, many worry that it could further alienate users who are already dissatisfied with the platform’s increasingly impersonal nature.

Meta’s Struggle to Stay Relevant Amid Declining Popularity

With a particularly noticeable dip in popularity among younger audiences, Meta’s decision to implement AI bots is seen as a desperate measure to boost engagement and maintain relevance in the social media landscape. While the company positions the bots as a tool to enhance user interaction, many believe they are merely a way to inflate activity and sustain ad revenue, even at the risk of diminishing the user experience.

This bold move may succeed in temporarily boosting numbers, but for many, it signals a troubling direction towards a more artificial and impersonal social media experience. Whether the move will ultimately help Meta maintain its place in the competitive social media sphere or drive users away is still uncertain.

The Future of Meta’s AI Strategy

As Meta moves forward with this strategy, it will likely face continued scrutiny from users, advertisers, and critics alike. While the plan to flood feeds with AI bots might deliver temporary increases in activity, the long-term impact on user loyalty and platform authenticity remains a critical question. For now, Meta’s gamble could mark a significant shift in how we experience social media, blurring the lines between genuine human interactions and artificially generated content.

</excerpt>

Meta Criticizes “Rushed” Legislation

Social media giant Meta has condemned Australia’s newly approved ban on social media use for those under 16, accusing the government of hastily pushing the law without adequately consulting young people or analyzing evidence. The controversial legislation, passed after a brief one-day inquiry and review of 15,000 submissions, aims to protect teenagers from harmful online content.

Supporters Defend Action Against Harmful Content

Australian lawmakers backing the ban argue it is a necessary step to shield future generations from the negative effects of online platforms. Shadow Communications Minister David Coleman emphasized the unprecedented exposure to harmful content faced by today’s youth, urging immediate action.

“This generation has grown up with more damaging content than any before,” Coleman told Sky News. “We must face this reality and address it.”

Critics Warn of Human Rights Violations

Despite receiving bipartisan support, the legislation has faced criticism from human rights advocates and mental health professionals. Some warn it could marginalize young Australians and overlook the positive aspects of social media, such as fostering connection and supporting mental health.

Christopher Stone, Executive Director of Suicide Prevention Australia, argued the government acted recklessly, stating, “The law disregards the benefits of social media in aiding young people’s well-being.”

Global Attention and Potential Expansion

The law has drawn international interest. UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle expressed openness to similar measures, while French Education Minister Anne Genetet has indicated interest in replicating the ban. Switzerland has also seen public support for such restrictions, according to local media reports.

Enforcement and Industry Concerns

Most social media platforms, including Meta and X, have pledged compliance but raised concerns about enforcement. Meta’s spokesperson stressed the importance of clear, feasible guidelines, warning against placing undue burdens on users and parents.

X owner Elon Musk criticized the ban as a veiled attempt to control internet access, labeling it a threat to digital freedom.

Government Stands Firm

Cabinet Minister Murray Watt defended the law, emphasizing its enforceability through steep fines of up to $50 million. “Between financial penalties and social pressure, companies will comply or face consequences,” Watt said.

As debate continues, Australia’s bold step may set a precedent for regulating youth access to social media worldwide.

Age Verification, Penalties Against Non-Compliance

Under the proposed act, social media companies must establish effective age verification programs on their respective platforms- for example, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, among others. Their systemic failure to prevent young children from accessing those platforms will be penalised up to a maximum penalty of 50 million AU dollars, approximately 32 million USD. The bill gave platforms one year to adjust their systems according to this law before it starts exacting penalties. Privacy Concerns and Proposed Amendments

While the bill has gained widespread support, with a recent survey showing 77% of Australians in favor, there are concerns about privacy and the effectiveness of the law. The Senate has added amendments to protect users from being forced to submit sensitive information like passports or driver’s licenses for age verification. Instead, platforms would need to adopt alternative methods to verify age without violating privacy.

Mixed Reactions from Lawmakers and Advocates

While some lawmakers and advocacy groups support the bill as a necessary measure to protect children from the risks of excessive social media use, others, including youth advocates, have expressed concerns. Critics argue that the legislation could infringe on children’s rights to self-expression, and some fear it could lead to privacy violations or push children to less safe corners of the internet. Independent lawmaker Zoe Daniel described the legislation as an empty gesture, claiming it wouldn’t address the inherent harms of social media.

Despite the criticisms, the bill has garnered broad political backing, making it likely to pass into law in the coming days. If enacted, Australia will implement some of the world’s toughest social media regulations, with the government pushing to protect children’s mental health ahead of a general election scheduled for May 2025.

</excerpt>

Meta has announced its intent to appeal the ₹213.14 crore penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for allegedly abusing its dominant position. The penalty stems from the 2021 update to WhatsApp’s privacy policy, which CCI found to involve unfair practices and anti-competitive behavior.

In a statement on Tuesday, a Meta spokesperson argued that the 2021 privacy policy update did not compromise the privacy of users’ personal messages and was presented as a voluntary choice for users.

“We ensured no one would have their accounts deleted or lose WhatsApp functionality due to the update,” the spokesperson said. “The update introduced optional business features on WhatsApp, enhancing transparency about data collection and usage. Since then, WhatsApp has provided immense value to users, businesses, and government organizations, contributing significantly to the Indian economy during and after COVID-19.”

The spokesperson reiterated Meta’s commitment to working towards solutions that uphold user and business expectations.

CCI’s Findings: Privacy Policy Deemed Anti-Competitive

The case centers on WhatsApp’s 2021 privacy policy, effective February 8, 2021, which required users to accept expanded data-sharing terms with Meta entities or lose access to the platform. This marked a departure from the 2016 privacy policy, where users could opt out of sharing their data with Facebook.

The CCI found this “take-it-or-leave-it” approach to be an unfair condition under the Competition Act. It deemed that the policy undermined user autonomy by compelling acceptance of the expanded data-sharing terms.

Cease-and-Desist Orders and Behavioral Remedies

In addition to the penalty, the CCI has issued cease-and-desist orders against WhatsApp. The Commission has mandated behavioral remedies to be implemented within a stipulated timeline, aiming to curb anti-competitive practices arising from user data sharing between Meta entities.

For a five-year period, WhatsApp is prohibited from sharing user data collected on its platform with other Meta companies for advertising purposes. After this period, specific regulatory provisions will govern data sharing between these entities.

Meta plans to contest the penalty, maintaining that the privacy update aligns with user choice and transparency. The appeal process will likely unfold in the coming months, as the company seeks to address the CCI’s concerns while continuing to provide services to users and businesses.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, disagrees with the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) decision to impose a Rs 213.14 crore fine. This penalty follows WhatsApp’s privacy policy update in 2021. Meta plans to appeal the decision.

Meta’s Response to the Fine

A Meta spokesperson clarified that the 2021 update did not affect the privacy of personal messages. “The update was optional, and it did not cause account deletions or limit WhatsApp’s functionality,” they said. Meta explained that the update aimed to provide more transparency about data collection and introduced optional business features.

Meta also highlighted WhatsApp’s role in helping users and businesses. The platform supported government services during COVID-19 and aided small businesses, which boosted the Indian economy. “WhatsApp is able to offer these services with support from Meta. We are committed to continuing to provide these experiences,” the spokesperson added.

CCI’s Data-Sharing Restrictions

The CCI’s ruling also imposes restrictions on data sharing. It prohibits WhatsApp from sharing user data with other Meta platforms, like Facebook and Instagram, for advertising for five years. Additionally, WhatsApp must introduce clear in-app notifications, allowing users to opt out of data sharing. The company will also add a new settings tab to help users manage their data-sharing preferences.

A CCI spokesperson noted, “These changes mark a significant shift in how WhatsApp handles user privacy. Users will have easier access to opt-out options and greater control over their data.”

</excerpt>

Several copyright owners have filed lawsuits against tech companies, including Meta, claiming improper use of protected works to train AI models. Meta contends that its AI training practices fall under fair use laws.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced an exciting collaboration with Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind popular films like ‘The Purge’ and ‘Get Out’. This partnership aims to explore the capabilities of Meta’s latest generative AI video model, called Movie Gen, which creates realistic video and audio clips based on user prompts.

Earlier this month, Meta introduced Movie Gen, positioning it as a competitor to offerings from AI leaders like OpenAI and ElevenLabs. The collaboration with Blumhouse indicates Meta’s commitment to working with the entertainment industry, despite ongoing tensions regarding the use of generative AI technologies.

Blumhouse has brought in several prominent filmmakers to investigate the potential of Movie Gen. Aneesh Chaganty, known for his work on ‘Searching’, will release a film demonstrating Meta’s AI technology on the Movie Gen website. Additionally, upcoming projects from actor and filmmaker Casey Affleck and The Spurlock Sisters are also in development.

Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse, highlighted the importance of involving filmmakers early in the development of tools like Movie Gen. He stated that technology should enhance, rather than replace, artistic storytelling. Blum welcomed the opportunity for directors to experiment with the AI, providing feedback on its strengths and limitations.

This partnership comes amid growing resistance in the creative industry towards generative AI, which raises concerns over copyright and consent. As previously mentioned, several copyright owners have filed lawsuits against tech companies, including Meta, for allegedly misusing protected works to train AI models. However, Meta asserts that its AI training practices are covered under fair use laws.

In spite of these legal challenges, Meta and other tech giants are actively collaborating with the creative sector. Last month, Meta secured deals with actors like Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, and John Cena, allowing their voices to be used for its Meta AI chatbot. This suggests a willingness to compensate for certain types of content to navigate legal and ethical complexities.

Meta is not alone in exploring the intersection of AI and entertainment. Microsoft-backed OpenAI has been in talks with Hollywood executives about possible partnerships involving its video generation tool, Sora. Although no agreements have been finalized, Lionsgate recently established a deal with Runway, another AI startup, reflecting the industry’s growing openness to AI-generated content.

Meta’s partnership with Blumhouse illustrates how AI-generated video could become a significant asset for filmmakers, even as the entertainment sector confronts the implications of such technology. As Movie Gen continues to develop, this collaboration may serve as a model for balancing creativity, technology, and copyright issues.

</excerpt>

Meta has dismissed 24 employees in Los Angeles after discovering they had been using company-issued meal credits for personal purchases, including household items like toothpaste, acne pads, and wine glasses, according to a report by Financial Times. The meal credits, intended for food deliveries to the office, were misused, prompting Meta to take disciplinary action.

Meta, like other major tech companies, offers food perks to its employees, with those in larger offices, such as its Silicon Valley headquarters, enjoying free on-campus meals. However, employees in smaller offices are provided with credits through platforms like Uber Eats and Grubhub. These daily credits—$20 for breakfast and $25 each for lunch and dinner—are meant to cover work-related meals.

Abuse of meal credits leads to firings

The employees in question reportedly used the meal credits for non-food items, violating company policy. Some were ordering personal food deliveries to their homes, while others pooled their credits together. Meta fired only those who had been misusing the system over an extended period. Employees who occasionally made improper purchases were issued warnings rather than being terminated.

One former employee, who earned $400,000 annually at Meta, shared their experience anonymously on Blind, a platform where professionals discuss workplace matters. They admitted to using their $25 meal credit to purchase toothpaste from Rite Aid and other non-food items when they didn’t need food. Despite admitting their mistake to HR, they were later unexpectedly fired.

“It was almost surreal that this was happening,” the ex-employee wrote.

Meal credit misuse separate from layoffs

These firings were unrelated to the broader layoffs happening at Meta-owned companies, such as WhatsApp and Threads, but highlight the tech giant’s strict enforcement of its internal policies.
