</excerpt>

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has called for a complete Kashmir bandh in response to the inhumane terror attack that took place in Pahalgam.

The attack, which has left the region in shock and mourning, targeted innocent civilians and has been widely condemned across the political spectrum. Reacting strongly to the incident, Mufti urged people across the Valley to observe a total shutdown as a mark of protest and solidarity with the victims.

Mehbooba Mufti’s Statement

In a powerful public message, Mehbooba Mufti said:

“The barbaric Pahalgam terror attack is a grim reminder of the bloodshed we’ve endured. I urge the people of Kashmir to stand united and observe a complete bandh in protest against this inhuman act.”

She emphasized the need for peace and justice, while also expressing concern over the rising violence in the Valley.

Political and Public Reaction

The call for the bandh has received mixed responses so far, with some political leaders supporting the move while others have urged for calm and dialogue.

Citizens across Kashmir are expressing grief and outrage over the attack. Many have taken to social media to share their condolences and stand in support of the bandh as a symbolic resistance to terrorism.

The Pahalgam Terror Attack

The terror strike in Pahalgam was reportedly carried out by unidentified gunmen, targeting a group of civilians. The exact number of casualties is still being verified, but preliminary reports suggest multiple injuries and fatalities.

Security forces have launched a massive manhunt to track down the perpetrators, and investigations are currently underway.

What’s Next?

With tensions running high, security has been tightened across Kashmir ahead of the bandh. Shops, businesses, and schools are expected to remain closed in many areas as the region braces for a day of protest.

The bandh reflects growing unrest and demands for stronger action against terrorism, as well as a deeper reflection on the region’s path toward peace.

</excerpt>

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti raised alarm on Friday regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the Ajmer Dargah, stating that the “secular foundations of the country are being shaken” and a “Hindu-Muslim rift is being created.”

Mufti criticized recent developments, saying, “A decision was made that a survey could be conducted at any place that is in doubt. The 1991 Supreme Court decision states that the status of a religious place as it was in 1947 cannot be changed.” She expressed concern over former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s remarks, which she believes have contributed to the current tensions. “Unfortunately, the former Chief Justice gave a decision which led to the search for Shivlings in mosques, and now these searches are also being conducted in shrines, places like Ajmer Sharif, which is 800 years old and attracts more Hindu visitors than Muslims,” Mufti told the media.

Mehbooba Mufti warned that the country is being pushed toward violence

The PDP leader warned that the country is being pushed toward violence and attributed the current situation to the former Chief Justice’s role. “Soon, they may start searching houses of Muslims. They are taking the country towards partition and violence like in 1947. The secular foundations of our country are being shaken. They are creating a Hindu-Muslim rift, and the ex-Chief Justice has played a very bad role in this,” she added.

The controversy intensified earlier this week when a Rajasthan court issued notices to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, and the Ajmer Dargah chief in response to a petition claiming that the Ajmer Dargah is built on the site of a temple. “A local court in Ajmer directed that notice be issued to three parties in a civil suit that claims that there is a Shiva temple in the dargah of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer,” the plaintiff’s advocate stated.

Advocate Yogesh Siroja, representing the plaintiff, confirmed that the suit was heard in the court of Civil Judge Manmohan Chandel. “The concerned parties have been issued notices; one is the Dargah Committee, the ASI, and the third is the Ministry of Minority Affairs. I am a descendant of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty, but I have not been made party to it… We are in touch with our legal team,” he added.

Syed Naseruddin Chishty, Chairman of the All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council, also criticized the increasing incidents where various groups are staking claims to mosques and dargahs. “These incidents are on the rise in the country. Every second day we see groups claiming mosques and dargahs. This is not in the interest of our society and country. Today, India is becoming a global power. Till when will we remain stuck in the temple and mosque controversy?” he stated.

</excerpt>

Her electoral debut has ended in defeat for Iltija Mufti, the daughter of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti. She was contesting from Bijbehara constituency in South Kashmir as results started coming on October 8 for the ongoing assembly elections.

I accept the verdict of the people. The love & affection I received from everyone in Bijbehara will always stay with me. Gratitude to my PDP workers who worked so hard throughout this campaign ?

— Iltija Mufti (@IltijaMufti_) October 8, 2024

I accept the verdict…

Iltija, who posted on X, reflected on her journey and graciously accepted the election results by saying, “I accept the verdict of the people. The love & affection I received from everyone in Bijbehara will always stay with me. Gratitude to my PDP workers who worked so hard throughout this campaign.”

Iltija emerged in 2019 when the detention of her mother had just followed the abrogation of Article 370. Unlike then, Mehbooba Mufti did not contest the elections, and at 37 years old, she remained the face of the PDP in South Kashmir.

Mehbooba Mufti, too, had started her political career from this very same Bijbehara constituency in 1996, which is well-known for being a stronghold of the Mufti family.

Iltija Mufti to Remember Her Grandfather

While waiting for the results of her first election, Iltija paid a rich tribute to her grandfather Mufti Muhammad Sayeed in this emotional X post where she remembered a treasured memory: “‘Sunny yahan ayain photo ke liye’. In 2015 when you insisted we take a picture in front of the Taj I hesitated. I am glad you kept at it because that was going to be one of our last photographic memories.”. You personified wisdom, grace, magnanimity & dignity. Whatever I know whatever I am is all because of you. I wish you were here today. The best grandfather there will ever be. We miss you.”

Road to Iltija Mufti’s Electoral Entry

In August 2019, when Kashmir was under a communication blackout, Iltija wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah disputing her detention in her Srinagar home. Only then was she allowed to leave the Valley. But exercising caution, she sought and obtained permission from the Supreme Court to visit her mother.

After Mehbooba Mufti was released, she accompanied Iltija to various public engagement programmes. In June 2022, she launched a video series, “Aapki Baat Iltija Ke Saath,” on X, in which issues concerning the people of Jammu and Kashmir are discussed.

A graduate in political science from Delhi University and also a master’s degree holder in international relations from Warwick University, UK, Iltija is famous for her fierce opposition to New Delhi’s policies on Kashmir and also fights for civil liberties and political rights. She keeps her personal life very private, while dedication to her career as a politician is very much visible.

Speaking at an AajTak event in Kashmir, Iltija talked about her personality, saying, “I did not only inherit my mother’s looks but her stubbornness as well. I am strategic, she is emotional. This is my personality and I hope people discover this as time passes.”

Elections to the Jammu and Kashmir assembly were conducted on September 18, 25, and October 1.

</excerpt>

BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh has launched a strong attack on National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti, and the Congress party, holding them responsible for the “distress” in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking at a party workers’ meeting in Battal Ballian, Udhampur, Chugh emphasized that the BJP is contesting the elections based on Prime Minister Modi’s vision for the development of Jammu & Kashmir.

Chugh criticized the NC, PDP, and Congress for what he termed “boycott politics” and accused them of acting as “puppets of Pakistan.” He expressed confidence that these parties would face defeat in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, asserting, “The people of Jammu and Kashmir are now aware of the truth behind these political entities and their practices.”

shah’s rally in Kashmir

Earlier, during a public rally in Jammu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took aim at the NC-Congress alliance, accusing them of attempting to destabilize the region by seeking the release of separatists and terrorist sympathizers. Shah stated, “Three families have looted J&K. Terror will be back if NC and Congress come to power. Jammu has to decide their fate. If the BJP comes to power, we won’t allow terror to raise its head, and talks with Pakistan will not resume until peace is restored.”

In response, NC Chief Farooq Abdullah hit back, accusing the BJP of attempting to divide India and weaken national unity. “When they point one finger towards us, three fingers are raised towards them. These (BJP) are the biggest looters. They have ruined the country. They have tried to divide the Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians. They do not want to keep India united; they want to divide India,” Abdullah remarked.

The National Conference and the Congress party have formed an alliance to contest the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls together. The Samajwadi Party (SP) has also extended its support to this alliance.

The first phase of voting in Jammu and Kashmir was completed on September 18, with a voter turnout of 61.13 percent across 24 constituencies in seven districts, according to the Election Commission. The second and third phases of voting are scheduled for September 25 and October 5, respectively, with vote counting set to take place on October 8, coinciding with the counting of votes in Haryana.

</excerpt>

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mehbooba Mufti defended her party’s track record during a media briefing on Thursday, emphasizing the party’s contributions to South Kashmir and its role in addressing the region’s challenges. As political campaigns intensify ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Mufti reiterated the PDP’s impact on improving governance and infrastructure in the region.

Mufti pointed to the PDP’s efforts in alleviating the difficulties caused by the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and task forces in South Kashmir. “The people of South Kashmir understand what the PDP has done for them. We freed the people from these harsh measures,” she stated. She criticized rival political parties for failing to deliver similar results, claiming that only the PDP can protect the region from the BJP’s attempts to undermine local land and employment opportunities.

Highlighting her party’s achievements, Mufti listed the establishment of medical colleges, universities, and the introduction of initiatives like Rehbar-e-Taleem and Rehbar-e-Khel as evidence of the PDP’s commitment to the region. “Our challenge is to build on our past work,” she said, stressing the importance of the party’s accomplishments as voters head to the polls.

Mufti also took aim at the BJP’s employment promises, accusing the party of misleading the public. “The BJP claims it will provide 5 lakh jobs to the youth, but they made a similar promise of 2 crore jobs annually across the country. Not even 1 crore of those jobs materialized over the last 10 years. Lying requires no effort,” she remarked.

Mufti had previously criticized the National Conference (NC), asserting that without the PDP, the NC would continue to function “in a dictatorial manner” in Jammu and Kashmir. She emphasized that the PDP’s tenure brought significant improvements in governance, including the establishment of universities, colleges, and AIIMS.

As the election approaches, both the National Conference and the PDP have pledged to restore Article 370 in their manifestos, while the BJP has dismissed this, stating that Article 370 is “a thing of the past.” The Assembly elections will be held in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with vote counting scheduled for October 8.

</excerpt>

On Sunday, Union Minister Giriraj Singh launched a sharp critique of the Congress, National Conference (NC), and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), accusing them of exploiting the people of Jammu and Kashmir for decades. Addressing reporters, Singh claimed that these parties, led by prominent figures such as Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, have manipulated the region’s inhabitants for their own political gain.

Singh remarked, “The Prime Minister said that he will conduct the elections. So, he is doing that. The announcement of the elections has been made democratically… The nepotistic parties and leaders like Congress, Farooq Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti have exploited the people of J-K.”

He underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dedication to establishing a democratic framework in Jammu and Kashmir. Singh highlighted that under Modi’s leadership, elections were previously conducted at the panchayat level, and now the Vidhan Sabha elections are imminent. “PM Narendra Modi established democracy by conducting elections of panchayats, and now Vidhan Sabha elections are going to be held,” Singh noted.

The Election Commission of India has scheduled the polling in Jammu and Kashmir to occur in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes slated for October 8. This process represents a significant step toward reinstating electoral democracy in the region.

This announcement comes amid increased political activity in Jammu and Kashmir, as various parties prepare for the forthcoming elections, which are anticipated to be a crucial gauge of public sentiment in the Union Territory.

The region has 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 9 for Scheduled Tribes (STs), and a total of 88.06 lakh eligible voters.

In the last Assembly elections, the PDP won 28 seats, the BJP secured 25, the National Conference won 15, and Congress took 12 seats. The PDP and BJP formed a coalition government led by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, but it collapsed in 2018 after the BJP withdrew its support following Mehbooba Mufti’s tenure as Chief Minister.

These upcoming elections will be the first since the abrogation of Article 370, making them particularly significant for the region.

She expressed concerns about her ability to effectively implement her party’s agenda within the current political framework, even if she were to secure the position of chief minister.

Reflecting on her previous term, Mufti highlighted achievements such as the revocation of FIRs against 12,000 individuals in 2016, initiating dialogue with separatists, and securing a ceasefire.

“Can we do that now? If you cannot take back an FIR as chief minister, what does one do with such a post?” she questioned.

The PDP president was asked about her stance following a shift in position by National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah, who had previously vowed not to participate in the polls until Jammu and Kashmir was restored to a full state. Abdullah is now among the 32 candidates announced by his party.

Mufti criticised the alliance between National Conference and Congress, suggesting that their collaborations have historically been driven by power rather than shared agendas. She recalled previous alliances with Congress and BJP, emphasising that PDP has consistently pursued its agenda.

On the potential release of jailed leaders like Lok Sabha MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid and separatist Shabir Ahmad Shah, Mufti welcomed the possibility and urged the government to consider releasing other individuals entitled to bail.

“You can put a person in jail, but you cannot imprison ideas,” she asserted.

Mufti reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to its agenda, highlighting past achievements such as the repeal of POTA and the opening of cross-LoC routes. She stressed the importance of addressing key issues, including the restoration of Article 370, for the resolution of conflicts in the region.

Later, two emerging politicians joined the PDP in the presence of Mehbooba Mufti, further strengthening the party’s position ahead of the elections.

</excerpt>

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): Peoples Democratic Party president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday urged the BJP-led government to resume the cross-LoC trade and stop raiding the traders who were associated with this barter business. The LoC trade which was started between India and Pakistan through Uri-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalkote in 2005 as a confidence building measure between India and Pakistan by the then NDA government.

However, the Centre stopped the bus service and trade in 2019 alleging that some unscrupulous and anti-national elements were using the route as a conduit for Hawala money, drugs, and weapons, under the garb of trade.

Mufti wrote a letter to union Home Minister Amit Shah saying the cross-LoC trade and travel has been the biggest confidence-building measure (CBM) ever between India and Pakistan and had opened new vistas of peacebuilding in J-K and the subcontinent that has the potential of bringing sustainable peace to the region if carried forward.

The PDP president, while addressing a press conference here over the issue, said the traders associated with the cross-LoC trade were in distress, and facing hardships.

Mufti alleged the traders were being “harassed” by the Income Tax Department with notices demanding tax payments for transactions that were non-monetary and did not involve any taxation at the time.
“This trade was based on a barter system and was free trade without any scope for tax that time. But, for some time now, they are being troubled by the Income Tax department. They have been facing IT raids, notices seeking GST, and demand for tax for the whole trade during all those years. Where will they get the tax?” she added.

The former chief minister appealed to the Union Home Minister to immediately intervene in the issue and have a relook at the closure of the trade.

Hundreds of families are associated with it. So, I appeal to the Home Minister to immediately intervene so that they get some relief, she added. The PDP chief said there is no better way to bring two Kashmirs together and address the issues in J-K.
It can be a huge CBM if it is taken to the next step, Mufti said

</excerpt>

Kashmir: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, has called for the immediate resumption of the Line of Control (LoC) trade, which has been halted since 2019. Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Mufti expressed her strong disapproval of the Income Tax Department’s actions, accusing them of unfairly targeting traders who have been left jobless since the trade’s suspension.

According to Mehbooba, the LoC trade was based on a barter system without any financial transactions. She criticized the tax authorities for demanding taxes from traders involved in this exchange, describing the move as unjust and detrimental to their livelihoods.

“The traders who once participated in this vital confidence-building measure (CBM) between the two sides of Kashmir are now being hounded by tax officials,” she stated, adding that this has only added to their hardships following the cessation of cross-border trade.

Mufti called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take immediate steps to restore the LoC trade, which was initiated during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and launched under Manmohan Singh’s leadership. She emphasized that the continuation of this trade is crucial for the economic well-being of those affected and for fostering trust between the regions.

Furthermore, she voiced her concerns over what she perceives as an attempt to weaken the people of Kashmir, cautioning against the possible confiscation of traders’ properties by the authorities.

</excerpt>

Senior politician Farooq Abdullah has expressed concerns over India’s growing isolation in the South Asian region, drawing comparisons with the political turmoil in Bangladesh. Speaking on Wednesday, Abdullah highlighted the distinct challenges India faces, contrasting them with those in Bangladesh. “Our country is different. In Bangladesh, it was a different matter. In Bangladesh, Hasina was pro-India, and people there were not pro-India. She ran the system there until it was possible to do it here,” he remarked.

Abdullah emphasized the need for India to prepare for potential dangers, noting that the nation currently lacks strong alliances with its neighbors. “Today, none of our neighbors are our friends or partners; we are all alone. Be it Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, or Sri Lanka, it’s unfortunate that this big brother has made his younger siblings angry,” he said. Abdullah stressed the importance of reviving India’s reputation as a responsible and supportive regional leader. “It is important that this reputation be revived. And India should fulfill its right to a big brother.”

He called for a concerted effort to address and resolve disputes with neighboring countries to rebuild friendly relations. “Indians should sit and focus on problems with everyone so that our neighbors will be our friends,” Abdullah urged.

Mehbooba Mufti, another prominent political figure, echoed Abdullah’s sentiments, drawing lessons from the recent unrest in Bangladesh. Mufti warned that similar issues could arise in India if the concerns of the youth are not addressed. “The situation in Bangladesh has a lesson for our country. We should consider that when the youth are pushed to the wall and harassed in all terms and decisions,” she stated.

Mufti underscored the pressing issue of unemployment in India and criticized policies that she believes are detrimental to merit and public welfare. “We should look into the unemployment rate in our country as well as the Agniveer scheme. The reservations granted should not be at the cost of open merit. Anti-people policies will eventually lead to the fate of Sheikh Hasina; you will have to flee away,” she warned.

Both leaders’ comments come at a time when India is facing increasing regional tensions and domestic challenges. Their remarks underscore the urgency of addressing both international relations and internal socio-economic issues to prevent further isolation and unrest.

</excerpt>

Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has issued a dire warning to the Indian government. She emphasized the importance of addressing the nation’s growing economic issues, particularly those affecting the youth, by drawing parallels to the socio-economic challenges currently faced by Bangladesh.

In her recent statements, Mufti expressed deep concern over the escalating unemployment and inflation in India, which she believes are pushing the country’s youth towards despair and potential unrest.

“Bangladesh’s struggles with unemployment and inflation should serve as a wake-up call for us. The increasing sense of marginalization and frustration among our youth due to a lack of opportunities and rising living costs cannot be ignored,” Mufti emphasized.

Mufti criticized the economic policies of the current Indian government, arguing that they have been ineffective in generating adequate employment opportunities and controlling inflation. She called for urgent, comprehensive reforms to stimulate job creation and stabilize prices, thereby securing a better future for India’s younger generation.

Her comments are particularly relevant as India faces economic challenges exacerbated by global uncertainties and domestic policy decisions. Mufti’s critique underscores the critical need for the government to take immediate action to address these issues and prevent potential social unrest.

“The youth are the backbone of any nation, and their well-being is crucial for our country’s stability and growth. We must prioritize policies that focus on education, skill development, and employment generation,” Mufti stated.

Mufti has long been an advocate for the welfare of the youth, consistently pushing for policies that support their education and employment. Her recent remarks highlight the urgent need for the government to address the economic grievances of the younger population to maintain social harmony and drive progress.

As India navigates through these turbulent economic times, Mufti’s call to action serves as a reminder of the pressing need to address the root causes of youth discontent. By learning from the experiences of neighboring Bangladesh, India has the opportunity to implement measures that can foster economic stability and ensure a prosperous future for its young citizens.

Kashmir: On the 25th foundation day of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), its President Mehbooba Mufti revealed that the party’s decision to align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 was motivated by the hope that he would emulate the inclusive and progressive governance style of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, Mufti remarked that Modi has failed to meet the expectations of the Kashmiri people.

Speaking to party workers in Srinagar, Mehbooba Mufti emphasized that the PDP had anticipated Modi would follow Vajpayee’s approach, but he has remained silent on the aspirations of the Kashmiri populace. She highlighted her party’s efforts toward peace and development in the region, claiming that achievements during the 2003-2006 period surpassed those of other parties over the past 70 years.

Mufti reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir’s residents, despite ongoing challenges. She raised serious allegations that people in Kashmir are being coerced into displaying BJP flags under the threat of imprisonment, drawing parallels to past draconian measures.

“People are being coerced into adopting BJP flags with the threat of facing imprisonment,” she said, adding that the Task Force, Ikhwaan, and the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), which were disbanded under the Mufti-led government in 2002, are now being revived.

Expressing gratitude to her party workers for their steadfast support amidst adversities, Mufti called for continued dedication to the party’s principles. The event saw the participation of all senior PDP leaders, underscoring the unity within the party despite recent challenges.

</excerpt>

Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the current President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has launched a scathing critique against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Government of India (GOI). Her comments come in response to a recent order in Uttar Pradesh, which she views as a deliberate attempt by the BJP to erode the constitutional rights guaranteed to all Indian citizens.

Speaking to reporters after the return of a former trade leader to the PDP, Mufti expressed her alarm over what she perceives as the BJP’s agenda to dismantle the constitutional safeguards that ensure individual freedoms. “It’s evident that the BJP seeks to dismantle the constitution, which grants every individual their fundamental rights,” she declared. “They are systematically torturing the very foundation of our democracy.”

Mufti pointed to the BJP’s significant electoral success as a factor that has emboldened their controversial actions. “They won 200 out of 350 seats, yet they refuse to correct their course,” she noted. This, she suggests, is a stark reminder to those who supported the BJP in past elections of the potential consequences of their policies.

She further warned that the BJP’s current policies appear to be targeting Muslims initially, but she fears other minority groups will soon face similar treatment. “They have started with Muslims and will inevitably target other minorities,” Mufti cautioned.

Turning her attention to the issue of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti lambasted the government’s ineffective approach. “Whether it’s our civilians or Indian soldiers, to the GOI they are mere cannon fodder,” she criticized. According to Mufti, the government has failed to fulfill its promises of eradicating militancy, with the situation worsening instead. “Contrary to their claims, militancy is not being wiped out; it is spreading to areas that were previously peaceful.”

Mufti’s remarks come amid growing concerns about the deteriorating security situation

</excerpt>

Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), strongly denounced the recent attack in Doda that claimed the lives of several soldiers and officers. In a blistering press conference, she demanded the immediate removal of the Director General of Police (DGP), accusing him of political bias and failure to uphold security.

Condemnation of the Doda Attack

Mufti began, “The events in Doda yesterday are deeply condemnable. We lost brave soldiers and officers in this attack. These are places that have not experienced terrorism firsthand. The DGP should be removed immediately.”

Highlighting the severity of recent incidents, Mufti noted, “Nearly 50 soldiers have lost their lives in recent attacks,” expressing dismay over the worsening security situation.

Criticism of the DGP

Mufti accused the DGP of prioritizing political interests over security concerns. “The DGP is preoccupied with political fixes. His agenda is to suppress the PDP and intimidate journalists,” she alleged.

She emphasized the negative impact on various segments of society, including religious and legal communities. “Our clerics and BAR association members are being harassed. We need a DGP who can lead, not one who plays politics. We’ve had many DGPs in the past, but none have acted like this.”

Moreover, she accused the police of internal corruption and intimidation. “Even within the police force, files are being tampered with and individuals are being blackmailed,” Mufti claimed, suggesting manipulation of the police for political purposes.

Historical Context and Political Position

Mufti invoked historical figures to underscore the importance of dialogue and peace. “They should remember their former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, who held dialogues here,” she emphasized, stressing the need for peace and dialogue over political maneuvering.

Wide-ranging Critique of BJP’s Rule

Mehbooba Mufti also criticized the BJP’s governance in the region at large. “For the past six years, the BJP has dominated the narrative here. They control everything. Even Hurriyat leaders are imprisoned. So what exactly are they achieving here?” she questioned, challenging the effectiveness of BJP policies.

Mufti accused the BJP of failing to fulfill its promises and attempting to shift blame onto regional parties. “What have they accomplished in the last six years? Now they want to deflect their failures onto regional parties,” she asserted.

Call for Accountability

In conclusion, Mufti called for immediate accountability and a change in leadership. “He should be removed,” she demanded, referring to the DGP, as a necessary step to restore order and prioritize the security and well-being of the people in the region.

The press conference underscored Mehbooba Mufti’s profound concerns about the current state of affairs in Jammu and Kashmir and her call for a return to effective, impartial governance.

“Ulta chor kotwal ko daante,” she added.

Earlier, on the day of voting in the Anantnag-Rajouri seat on May 25, Mehbooba Mufti sat in a protest alleging that the police had detained her party’s polling agents and workers without any reason.

Mufti said, “PDP workers are being locked up in police stations without any reason. DG, LG, and all officials from top to bottom are involved in this. They have locked up PDP polling agents in police stations. You had said that there will be free and fair elections but you are doing all this. Complaints are being received from places where efforts are being made to tamper the machines (EVMs).”

On May 13, she penned a letter to the Election Commission, urging an end to purported harassment and ‘unlawful’ detentions of her party members. Mufti is contesting for the Anantnag-Rajouri seat against Mian Altaf Ahmad of the National Conference (NC) and Zafar Iqbal Manhas of the Apni Party.

The Election Commission’s latest data reveals a 54.3% voter turnout in the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, significantly higher than the 14.3% recorded during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

</excerpt>

Jammu, March 01: With Delhi as their base of operations, the Congress party’s top leaders are engaged in intensive discussions with key figures from Jammu and Kashmir, including National Conference Vice President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and People’s Democratic Party Chief and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, in a bid to finalize a crucial alliance.

Led by senior leaders such as Vikar Rasool Wani, who serves as the party’s chief, the Congress delegation has been stationed in the National Capital for several days, actively engaging in talks. There is a palpable sense of optimism within the Congress camp, with hopes running high that the alliance could be solidified within the next few days.

Speaking on the matter, Vikar Rasool Wani emphasized the imminent announcement of the alliance structure in Jammu and Kashmir. “You will hear from us very soon that the alliance has been finalized. Together, we will stand united against the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir. Our primary goal is to ensure the success of the INDIA alliance on all five seats. We are committed to supporting our alliance partners, as we pursue our shared objectives,” he asserted.

Sources within the Congress have revealed that numerous calls have been made to Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti to expedite the alliance discussions. However, negotiations are ongoing, with some valley-based parties expressing reservations about joining forces for the Lok Sabha polls, viewing it as a potential threat to their prospects in the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled before September, following the Supreme Court’s directive.

Previously, the Congress presented a fresh alliance proposal for Jammu and Kashmir, proposing a seat-sharing arrangement among the National Conference, the People’s Democratic Party, and itself. Under this proposal, the National Conference would contest three seats, the People’s Democratic Party one, and the Congress two. While the formula has garnered support from the party’s high command and local leadership, the final decision remains with the central leadership. The focus remains on maximizing electoral benefits through a collaborative approach, with careful consideration given to all five Lok Sabha seats in the state.

</excerpt>

Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (JKPDP) and a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, confirmed the unwavering determination of the people in the region after the Supreme Court upheld the Union Government’s decision to revoke Article 370. She said, “Our fight for honor and dignity will continue regardless.” This is not the end of our journey.”

Despite the verdict, Mufti emphasized that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would not give up hope or surrender. She framed the Supreme Court’s decision on Article 370 as a setback not just for the region, but for India as a whole.

The people of J&K are not going to lose hope or give up. Our fight for honour and dignity will continue regardless. This isn’t the end of the road for us. pic.twitter.com/liRgzK7AT7

Challenging the celebration around the verdict, Mufti highlighted the restrictions imposed in J&K, citing the directive to keep shops closed until 10 a.m. and the situation of house arrest during the day of the verdict. She portrayed this as a political struggle with historical significance, urging unity to confront it.

Hasnain Masoodi, National Conference MP, expressed concerns about the unresolved issues post-bifurcation of the state into Union Territories, indicating that senior lawyers would evaluate the judgment to determine further actions.

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and a five-judge bench, stated that every decision taken by the Center for a State under proclamation couldn’t be legally challenged to prevent administrative standstills. The Court reiterated that Article 370 was a temporary provision necessitated by war conditions, meant for the constitutional integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the Union.

Additionally, the apex court directed the Election Commission to conduct Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections by September 30, 2024, and urged the expeditious restoration of the region’s statehood.

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury emphasized the urgency of the J&K elections and the reinstatement of full statehood following the SC’s verdict on Article 370.

The SC’s decision has ignited varied responses, reflecting the complexities and diverse opinions surrounding the abrogation of Article 370 and its aftermath in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has dismissed claims made by the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) about the alleged house arrest of prominent Jammu and Kashmir leaders as “baseless.”

The National Conference alleged that senior leader Omar Abdullah was confined to his residence before the Supreme Court’s hearing on the viability of abrogating Article 370. Additionally, the PDP asserted that their party chief, Mehbooba Mufti, was placed under house arrest.

</excerpt>

Reports have surfaced indicating that former Chief Ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah have allegedly been put under house arrest following the recent Supreme Court decision affirming the removal of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Prominent figures in the region’s political sphere, both Mufti and Abdullah, known for their vocal opposition to the revocation of Article 370, are reported to be experiencing restrictions on their movements and communications, confined to their residences. This development follows the apex court’s definitive ruling on Article 370’s constitutional aspects and its directives for the reinstatement of J&K’s statehood alongside scheduling assembly elections by September 2024.

Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Omar Abdullah, leading the National Conference (NC), have been influential voices in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape. Both have strongly protested against the annulment of Article 370, advocating for the restoration of the region’s special status.

Even before the Supreme Court judgment is pronounced, Police have sealed the doors of the residence of PDP President @MehboobaMufti and put her under illegal house arrest.
The reported house arrests of these prominent leaders come amidst heightened political sensitivity following the SC verdict. The restrictions on their movement and communication signal a heightened state of vigilance and control, underscoring the government’s measures to maintain law and order in the region post-pivotal judgment.

These developments underscore the continuing political tensions and divergent views prevalent in Jammu and Kashmir following the SC’s validation of the Article 370 abrogation. The confinement of these political leaders underlines the intricate and delicate socio-political dynamics at play in the region amid the evolving constitutional and political landscape.

According to Mehbooba Mufti, not only is democracy being murdered, but the national anthem is being sung to offer cover for such crimes.

“No words are enough to condemn the manner in which BJP has repeatedly undermined the popular mandate in Maharashtra. Not only is democracy being butchered but they are using the national anthem to provide cover for such disgraceful actions.

“On one hand, BJP is arresting political opponents on trumped-up corruption charges while they themselves are on an MLA purchasing spree. Hard-earned public money is being misused to quench BJPs’ thirst for power,” Mehbooba Mufti tweeted.

Ajit Pawar, prominent leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), joined the Eknath Shinde-led government in Maharashtra on Sunday and took oath as the state’s deputy chief minister. In a remarkable turn of events, Ajit Pawar arrived at Raj Bhawan with eight MLAs to see Governor Ramesh Bais.

</excerpt>

After three years, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was granted a passport. This comes after a New Delhi court ordered the authorities in March to make a decision on her travel documents within three months.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief’s passport had expired in 2019, and she had applied for its renewal in 2020, following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

Mufti claimed that authorities had also denied her 80-year-old mother’s passport due to an adverse report by the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The couple intended to make a religious pilgrimage to Mecca.

Daughter of Mehbooba, Iltija Mufti said. “My mother received her passport after three years. She had applied in 2020.” Mufti, 64, was issued a regular passport valid for ten years, as opposed to her daughter Iltija’s restricted passport valid for two years and only for one country — the UAE. According to Iltija, Mufti received the passport just before the Delhi court’s deadline.

“A Delhi court had given three months’ time to the passport office here which were about to expire. They dispatched her passport before that,” she said.

In addition to Mufti, her mother Gulshan Ara’s passport was issued two months ago. “My grandmother received it as well, and my regular passport is now pending,” she explained.

In March, a Delhi court ordered passport authorities to issue Mufti travel documents within three months. “Given that the case has been remanded to the passport officer and that the initial rejection was two years ago, let the passport officer concerned make a decision expeditiously and, in any case, within three months,” Justice Prathiba M Singh had said.

A Dhangri IED explosion in Rajouri, Jammu, claimed the life of a toddler and injured five others. The explosion happened at the location where four persons were killed in a terrorism-related strike yesterday evening.

“A blast has taken near the house of the first firing incident. 5 persons are injured. One child has succumbed to injuries. Another critical. Media personnel are requested to be cautious. Another suspected IED spotted which is being cleared. Self with div com and IG CRPF reaching the spot”, Mukesh Singh, additional director general of police, said.

After a suspected terror attack last evening that left four people dead and six injured, there has now been a second terror attack in the village in less than 12 hours. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen arrived on the scene in the car and opened fire randomly before escaping. Deepak Kumar, Satish Kumar, Pritam Lal, and Shiv Pal were named as the deceased.

Those injured were identified as Pawan Kumar, Rohit Pandit, Saroj Bala, Sushil Kumar, Shub Sharma and Urvashi Sharma.

According to eyewitnesses, some people carrying guns arrived in a car and opened fire before fleeing from the spot.The firing had taken place days after an encounter at Sidhra on the outskirts of Jammu city on December 28. The security forces had gunned down four terrorists, saying that a terror attack had been averted.

They also had seven AK assault rifles, one M4 rifle, three pistols, and a tonne of ammunition taken from them. Manoj Sinha, the lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir, denounced the terrorist attack and presented ex-gratia to the relatives of the victims.

“An ex-gratia of Rs. 10 lakh and a Govt job would be given to the next of kin of each of those civilians martyred in dastardly attack. Seriously injured would be given Rs.1 lakh. Officials have been directed to ensure best treatment to injured”, the L-G’s office tweeted. Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the incident, and attacked the BJP over the killings. “Condemn this cowardly act & condolences to their families. Despite being under BJP rule & its bogus claims of ending militancy, violence continues unabated. Had J&K had its own elected government, the same media would have hauled them over the coals”, the People’s Democratic Party chief tweeted.

</excerpt>

The Jammu administration on Tuesday issued an order authorising all tehsildars (revenue officials) to issue a certificate of residence to people residing in the district for more than one year.

The purpose of the certificate of residence is to ensure that no eligible voter is left for registration in the ongoing special summary revision of electoral rolls. “Whereas, Special Summary Revision, 2022 has been started in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir with effect from 15th September, 2022, for registration of new voters, deletion, correction, and transposition of voters who have migrated, died since the last Summary Revision,” read the order of the Deputy Commissioner, Jammu.

As per the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, any of the following documents can be accepted as proof of residence: water/electricity/ gas connection for one year; Aadhar card, current passbook of a nationalized/scheduled bank/ post Office; Indian passport; Revenue Department’s land owning record including Kisan Bahi; registered rent/lease deed (in case of Tenant); registered sale deed in case of own house.

The guidelines further stated that in the event that none of the above documents are available, then a field verification is a must. For example, in categories like homeless Indian citizens who are otherwise eligible to become electors but do not possess any documentary proof of ordinary residence, the Electoral Registration Officer shall designate an officer for field verification.

“It has been noticed that some eligible voters are facing hardships in registration as voters due to non-availability of documents mentioned hereinabove; Now, therefore, keeping In view the urgency involved in the matter and to ensure that no eligible voter is left for registration during the Special Summary Revision, 2022. In District Jammu, all Tehslldars are authorized to issue certificates of residence after conducting necessary field verifications, to the person(s) residing In District Jammu for more than one year, for the purpose,” added the order.

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti criticised the move. Taking to Twitter, Mufti said, “ECI’s latest order for the registration of new voters makes it clear that GOI’s colonial settler project has been initiated in Jammu. They will bear the first blow to Dogra culture, identity, employment, and business. “

Notably, in August, the Election Commission announced the schedule of the Special Summary Revision in Jammu and Kashmir and announced that the people who were not voters in the Assembly after the abrogation of Article 370 from the region can now be named on the voter’s list.
According to an official, the person does need to be a “permanent resident” of the Union Territory for the same.
The final electoral roll after due disposal of all claims and objections filed within the stipulated time period would be published on 25th November , 2022.

Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has claimed she was under house arrest and was not allowed to visit Pattan to attend a worker’s wedding. She linked her ‘house arrest’ to union home minister Ami t Shah’s visit to J&K. However, the Srinagar Police refuted her claims.

“While HM is going around Kashmir beating drums of normalcy, I am under house arrest for simply wanting to visit Pattan for a worker’s wedding. If an ex CM’s fundamental rights can be suspended so easily, one can’t even imagine the plight of a commoner,” PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti wrote, tagging Amit Shah and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor.
The Srinagar Police refuted her claim and said, “It is clarified that no restriction of any kind (of) travel to Pattan, travel to Pattan was at 1 pm as intimated to us,” an official statement read. On a photo shared by the PDP leader, the Srinagar Police further wrote that the photos were of “inside of the gate with a lock of residents who stay in the bungalow. There is no lock or any restrictions. She is free to travel.”

The PDP leader continued her attack, “I was informed last night by SP Baramulla @bhatray that I wouldn’t be allowed to travel to Pattan. Today @JmuKmrPolice have themselves locked my gates from inside & are now lying through their teeth. Sad that law enforcement agencies are brazenly trying to cover up their tracks,” she tweeted.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah is on a three-day visit to J&K. He is set to host a massive rally in Baramulla on Wednesday, one of the largest since the scrapping of Article 370 three years ago.
