</excerpt>

Meghalaya’s HITO demands Inner Line Permit extension to curb infiltration and protect indigenous communities.

Guwahati: Meghalaya pressure group Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking the urgent extension of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime to the entire state. The ILP is an official travel document issued by the Indian government to allow Indian citizens to enter and stay in specific protected areas for a limited time.

The letter raises serious concerns over growing internal security threats, demographic shifts, and alleged infiltration along the India-Bangladesh border.

In a detailed memorandum submitted to the Home Minister, HITO highlighted what it termed “alarming geopolitical developments” that have implications for Meghalaya’s internal security. The group cited recent ceasefire developments along the India-Pakistan western front and “credible intelligence” on increased infiltration from Bangladesh, allegedly supported by Pakistan’s ISI, as pressing reasons to tighten border regulations in the Northeast.

Speaking to TSG, Donbok Dkhar, President of HITO, said, “The recent conflict and subsequent ceasefire between India and Pakistan along the western front have once again highlighted the need for heightened internal security across all sensitive border regions, including those in the Northeast. More concerning is the credible intelligence emerging regarding increased infiltration along the India-Bangladesh border, including Meghalaya, and the establishment of a strategic base by Pakistan’s ISI in Bangladesh, which poses a serious national security threat. In this context, the growing number of illegal infiltrations into Meghalaya—allegedly facilitated through monetary inducements—raises pressing concerns. These activities are not only a violation of India’s sovereignty but also a potential gateway for sleeper cells or terror activities that could destabilise the peace and social fabric of the region.”

The group argued that the ILP system, under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act of 1873, would help:
1. Enhance border security by regulating unchecked entry.
2. Safeguard indigenous communities and maintain demographic stability.
3 .Help detect and deter the entry of anti-national elements and sleeper cells.
4. Reinforce national efforts against cross-border terrorism and infiltration.

Beyond infiltration concerns

The demand for the ILP was also raised following the murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi in the state. On May 23, the newlywed couple, Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi, left around 10 am for a trek and disappeared. Their scooter was found abandoned the next day on the Shillong–Sohra road.

Following the incident, several pressure groups along with ministers have talked about regulations to monitor incoming tourists in the state. Pressure groups such as HYC staged a demonstration in Shillong over the issue of ILP and also highlighted the defamation faced by the state amid the murder row.

Speaking to TSG, Dkhar added, “They commit a crime here and run away. This happens because there is no proper mechanism to deal with it.”

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya cabinet has decided to strengthen the state’s resident safety legislation following the recent incident in Sohra, while simultaneously approving a significant land repurposing initiative to boost tourism infrastructure. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the cabinet will revisit the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) to address growing concerns about criminal activities disguised as tourism ventures.

“The aim is to further strengthen the Act to better prevent criminal activities carried out under the guise of tourism,” Sangma stated on social media.
“This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents, while continuing to welcome genuine tourists to our state.”

Tourism angle

The bigger challenge of bringing ILP to a tourism-based state like Meghalaya is the concerns of tourists. Talking in the context of the honeymoon murder case to iTV Network, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh spoke about welcoming all tourists to the state but with a sense of responsibility.

“Meghalaya is a getaway for the people and all are welcome. Our tourists are our extended family members. But please come here with clean hands, and if any crime is committed, the police will come after you,” added Lyngdoh.

TSG spoke to Balajied Jyrwa from the Assam-Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association, who stated that the need for ILP is not limited to illegal immigration but also to check the incoming and outgoing flow of traffic.

“Talking from a tourist perspective, we can’t scrutinise everything. The government has checkpoints, but they are selective, and we need more checking,” said Balajied.

He believes the introduction of ILP will help check the flow of people as Meghalaya is situated near the international border. He further highlighted that the honeymoon murder initially blamed the locals until the police investigation began. Tourist associations believe the introduction of ILP will create better response time in situations like the honeymoon murder.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya government has also introduced mandatory registration of guests at homestays, resorts, and hotels via a tourism app, a Real-Time Distress Response System, and “Tourist Buddy” services for safety. Meghalaya has made guides mandatory for trekking in East Khasi Hills after tourist deaths. The administration plans to effectively implement the directive by deploying more trained guides and working with local communities.

</excerpt>

A honeymoon tragedy in Meghalaya sparked controversy, but locals united to defend their state’s honour.

GUWAHATI: For a few days, Meghalaya, known for its clouds and picturesque beauty, became a place of safety concerns. This happened when a newlywed couple arrived for their honeymoon and went missing in the Sohra district. Sohra is home to Cherrapunji, once marketed as “India ka sabse jyada barish.” In those friendly yet harsh torrential rains, hundreds of personnel from the state police, NDRF, SDRF, and local villagers came together—not for a cultural festival, but to search for the missing couple.

What happened after the incident?

On May 23, the newlywed couple, Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi, left around 10 am for a trek and disappeared. Their scooter was found abandoned the next day on the Shillong–Sohra road, sparking a missing persons inquiry. What followed were conspiracy theories alleging that the couple was murdered by locals. Sonam’s family, from Madhya Pradesh, reportedly wrote to the Chief Minister, possibly requesting a CBI investigation.

Social media was rife with trolling, with harsh comments targeting Meghalaya, some even accusing “NE tribals” of murder. This onslaught endangered the reputation of Meghalaya’s police and locals, most of whom depend on tourism—from running cafes and shops to hosting guests in homestays.

Search operation amid pressure

As pressure mounted, authorities sprang into action. The search began with locating the couple. On June 2, Raja’s decomposed body was discovered beneath Wei Sawdong Falls—a three-tiered waterfall in Cherrapunji where the couple had gone in isolation. Even after the body’s recovery, suspicion toward locals persisted—until June 9, when Sonam surrendered in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, claiming she had been kidnapped.

Police subsequently arrested Raj Kushwaha and three other suspects. June 9 dramatically shifted the narrative, clearing Meghalaya of the false accusations. The investigation continues, with police establishing links and piecing together the case. Locals took it upon themselves to help clear Meghalaya’s name. Over 500 security personnel, including NDRF and SDRF teams, worked on the ground. Villagers assisted by providing information, and even food, to officials navigating the difficult jungle terrain.

The Sunday Guardian spoke to Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police (SP) of East Khasi Hills District, who is spearheading the investigation. He emphasised the vital role of the locals, saying they aided the police and agencies throughout the operation. Some even offered meals to the officials working in the tough conditions near Wei Sawdong Falls. Reporters visiting Sohra found that many residents were determined to restore the region’s reputation.

Albert Pde, a local tourist guide—possibly the last person to see Raja alive—tipped off the police that three other men were with the couple, none of whom were locals. All three spoke in Hindi, leading police to widen their investigation. This lead proved crucial in the eventual arrests.

Tourists are back, regulations await

The Sunday Guardian visited Nongriat’s Living Roots Bridge and Wei Sawdong Falls, where tourists showed renewed enthusiasm. “This was a personal incident. Why blame the locals?” said Apurva from West Bengal. A family from Bihar, visiting the same spot where the couple was last seen, praised the locals’ hospitality. “I lost my wife’s purse here, and locals returned it. I give this place a 10 on 10,” said Dr Dilip.

While conspiracy theories—including claims of black magic—circulated, two things remained constant: the clouds of Meghalaya and the locals’ warm greeting, “Khublei,” a Khasi word meaning “thank you” or “blessing.” Following the case, calls for an Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya have gained traction. ILP is an official travel document issued by the Indian government that allows citizens to enter protected areas for a limited time.

The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), a local pressure group, staged a demonstration in Shillong demanding ILP enforcement and condemning the defamation of the state. Donbok Dkhar, HITO President, told NewsX, “They commit crimes here and flee.

There’s no mechanism to deal with it.” Meanwhile, the Meghalaya cabinet has decided to strengthen resident safety legislation and approved a major land repurposing initiative to boost tourism infrastructure. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the cabinet will revisit the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) to tackle criminal activities disguised as tourism. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our residents while continuing to welcome genuine tourists,” Sangma said on social media. Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh added, “Meghalaya is a getaway. Tourists are like family to us. But come with clean hands— if any crime is committed, the police will come after you.”

</excerpt>

A chilling twist has emerged in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case involving Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi. Investigators revealed that Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused and Raja’s wife, had been in regular contact with someone identified as ‘Sanjay Verma’, a name now confirmed to be an alias used by her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, the alleged mastermind of the murder.

East Khasi Hills district SP Vivek Syiem told PTI, “We have discovered that Sonam made over 100 phone calls to one Sanjay Verma before her marriage to Raja. The calls continued even after the wedding.”

Police initially launched a search operation in Indore to track Verma, whose phone had gone inactive. Eventually, they uncovered that ‘Verma’ was actually Raj Kushwaha, the man who allegedly orchestrated Raja’s killing.

Sonam’s Family Denies Knowledge of Alias

Responding to questions from the media, Sonam’s brother Govind denied any knowledge of Sanjay Verma. “I don’t know anything about Sanjay Verma. I had come to show you all the places where Raj used to work. Nothing has been seized from here. I have also learned today that Sanjay’s name is also coming up in this,” he said.

Multiple Murder Attempts Before Success

Police said that the murder on May 23 was not the first attempt. East Khasi Hills SP Rituraj Ravi revealed that the hitmen tried and failed on three earlier occasions—in Guwahati, Nongriat, and near Weisawdong Falls—before finally executing the plan in Sohra.

Raja Raghuvanshi had married Sonam on May 11 in Indore, and they had travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20. The couple went missing on May 23, and Raja’s decomposed body was discovered on June 2.

Financial Angle Under Probe

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been deployed in Indore to investigate potential financial motives behind Raja’s murder, beyond the suspected love triangle. Police suspect that others may have had something to gain from his death.

Raj Kushwaha, who works for a company owned by Sonam’s family, is accused of hiring three contract killers to murder Raja. Though he stayed away from Meghalaya to avoid raising suspicion, he is believed to have planned every detail.

Trail of Escape and Key Clue Left Behind

Following the murder, Sonam reportedly fled through Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh before reaching Indore. Police found her mangalsutra and a ring abandoned in a trolley bag at their Sohra homestay, which initially triggered suspicion about her involvement.

All five accused in the case, including Sonam and Raj Kushwaha, are currently in police custody.

</excerpt>

Planning a trip to Meghalaya for its scenic waterfalls and beautiful sights? Well, do a favour to your palette and add to your itinerary, Sohra 1885, a cafe inside a 140-year-old former police station in Cherrapunji (Sohra). This unique eatery lets you enjoy a hearty meal behind actual jail bars, blending rich colonial history with modern hospitality.

Sohra 1885, a joint venture between the Meghalaya Police and local businessman Nafi Nongrum, serves a variety of cuisines while maintaining the building’s historic charm. In addition to providing a unique dining experience, all proceeds support police welfare, making it a significant destination for both foodies and history buffs.

How Did This Cafe Come Into Being?

Originally built during the British era, this old police station has now been reimagined into a heritage café. Once used as a detention centre, the site now invites visitors to dine in cozy rooms that were once jail cells. The man behind the idea is Vivek Syiem, the current Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills. He first thought of revamping the building when he served as Deputy SP and wanted to preserve its historical value while giving it a fresh purpose.

The project is a collaboration between the Meghalaya Police and local entrepreneur Nafi Nongrum, who led the restoration. The café maintains the original stone walls, old wooden floors, and vintage fireplaces, allowing guests to enjoy their meals amid authentic colonial architectural features. The transformation is impressive, and yet the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

What Makes This Cafe So Special?

Sitting down for a meal here may seem odd at first, but the experience is anything but grim. This restaurant is a creative tribute to Meghalaya’s past. Arched windows, aged bricks, and cell-inspired dining areas offer a visual treat while you feast on a wide selection of multi-cuisine dishes.

All profits from Sohra 1885 are believed to go directly toward police welfare programs, so every meal you enjoy here contributes to a good cause. It’s not just a place to eat, it’s a creative way of keeping history alive. Loved by both locals and visitors, this spot has managed to become a favourite.

The rustic ride, built entirely from bamboo, has stirred nostalgia and admiration for its simplicity and creativity. Social media users praised the village’s ingenuity and reflected on the lost innocence of childhood fun.
</excerpt>

In an age where technology more often than not determines fun, a heart-warming video of Meghalaya has taken over the internet space, providing a poignant reminder of childhood innocence. The viral clip, which contains children enjoying a homemade bamboo roller coaster, is winning hearts in the online community and triggering very strong waves of nostalgia.

Simple Thrill, Big Smiles

Posted by the @travelling.shillong Instagram account, the video introduces an unusual village construct, a fully hand-made roller coaster constructed with bamboo. It says in a caption, “Bamboo roller coaster? This ride looks too much fun to skip but is it strictly for children? Something, apparently, adults seemed to largely concur when observing the joyous scene.”

Made of bamboo, the small roller coaster mimics the movement of its contemporary steel counterparts, providing an exciting experience with a countryside touch. Kids are heard giggling in delight as they have turns on it, their screams wafting in the peaceful village surroundings, a scene of unadulterated, unbridled bliss.

A Wave of Nostalgia

The endearing clip has tugged at the heartstrings of social media fans, who posted many of their own recollections of carefree, device-free days.

“Reminds me of my childhood days in the village… pure joy,” one of them posted. Another chimed in, “This is what real fun looks like no screens, no apps, just laughter.”

The ride has also been commended for the ingenuity and zeal of the villagers who constructed it. “What a wonderful use of bamboo! Salute to the people’s spirit,” one commenter said.

Some viewers were very much inclined to experience the ride, with comments such as, “Can grown-ups join too? I want to feel this happiness!” and “I would ride this in a heartbeat, honestly.”

There was also contemplation about how children are evolving in the digital world. “Today’s children are stuck to phones, they need this sort of thrill,” one user commented. Another commented, “This should be on every travel bucket list, real India, real smiles.

Learn more about how this happened.
</excerpt>

A two-year-old child in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district has tested positive for polio, a highly infectious and potentially fatal viral disease. However, this case is unusual as the infection was caused by a vaccine-derived poliovirus, a rare occurrence that can happen in some children with weakened immune systems.

What Is Vaccine-Derived Polio?

Vaccine-derived poliovirus is linked to the oral polio vaccine (OPV), commonly known as ‘polio drops’. The OPV contains a weakened version of the poliovirus, which is generally safe and effective in preventing polio. However, in rare cases, this weakened virus can cause the infection itself, particularly in children with compromised immune systems.

According to Dr. T Jacob John, a former virology professor at Christian Medical College Vellore, vaccine-derived infections can occur in two ways:

1. Reversion to Virulence: Sometimes, the weakened virus in the OPV can continue to circulate among children, gradually regaining its ability to cause severe infection as it spreads.

2. Chronic Infection in Immunodeficient Children: In children with weak immune systems, the weakened virus may remain in the gut for an extended period, slowly regaining its strength and eventually leading to severe infection.

In the case of the child from Meghalaya, it appears that the weakened virus in the vaccine replicated in the child’s gut over time, eventually triggering the infection.

Have Vaccine-Derived Polio Cases Occurred in India Before?

India’s last case of wild poliovirus, the naturally occurring form of the virus, was reported in West Bengal’s Howrah district in 2011. Since then, India has been declared polio-free, with no wild polio infections reported since 2014. However, cases of vaccine-derived polio have continued to emerge.

For instance, in 2013, an 11-month-old child in Maharashtra’s Beed district, who had an immunodeficiency, died due to vaccine-derived polio. Other cases have been reported across the country, with the most recent one before the Meghalaya incident occurring in Kerala last month.

These cases, while concerning, do not affect India’s polio-free status. Only the detection of wild poliovirus would jeopardize this status.

Preventing Vaccine-Derived Polio: A Balancing Act

The oral polio vaccine (OPV) has been instrumental in the global effort to eradicate polio. Its ease of administration has made it the cornerstone of vaccination campaigns in many countries, including India. However, the risk of vaccine-derived infections has led some experts to recommend switching to the injectable polio vaccine (IPV).

The IPV is administered as an injection and does not contain live virus, so it cannot cause vaccine-derived polio. However, it has its own limitations. The IPV does not prevent the spread of the virus from one person to another, and it requires trained personnel to administer, which could lower immunization rates.

In India, both OPV and IPV are used. IPV is given during routine immunizations, while OPV is administered during Pulse Polio Days, a key part of the government’s universal polio vaccination campaign. However, according to Dr. John, India is using IPVs “sub-optimally,” typically giving only one IPV shot compared to three shots and one booster in countries that have fully transitioned to IPV.

Conclusion: Ensuring Safety While Maintaining Immunization Levels

The rare case of vaccine-derived polio in Meghalaya has prompted health officials to remain vigilant. Even though such cases do not compromise India’s polio-free status, they highlight the need for careful monitoring and continued high levels of immunization. The challenge lies in balancing the effectiveness of the oral polio vaccine with the safety provided by the injectable vaccine to prevent future outbreaks.

This return marks a significant step in ensuring the safety of Indian citizens amidst escalating violence in the neighboring country.

“By Thursday evening at 6:45 pm, 202 Indians stranded due to the violence have crossed from Dawki,” confirmed a Meghalaya home department official, who requested anonymity. “We have taken all possible measures to ensure the safety of the students. The situation is under control, but the government continues to monitor it closely.”

Among the returnees, 198 are students, with 67 hailing from Meghalaya. The group also includes students from Nepal (101) and Bhutan (seven), alongside 23 individuals from other Indian states and four tourists.

The Meghalaya state government has been actively coordinating with the Bangladesh High Commission and the Land Port Authority to facilitate the safe return of Indian nationals. A dedicated helpline (1800 345 3644) has been established, and nodal officers Additional Police Superintendent Hiwot Rymbai (+91 96157 16153) and Land Port Executive Thomas (+91 84150 60802) have been appointed to oversee the evacuation process.

Amidst the turmoil, Bangladeshi authorities cut mobile internet services in several parts of the country on Thursday, which saw the worst violence yet with 13 fatalities. Students armed with sticks and rocks clashed with police in Dhaka, leading to the deaths of at least 19 people over the week.

Andrew Sholomar, the organizing secretary of the Bangladesh Indigenous People’s Forum (BIPF), described the situation in Dhaka as dire. “A nationwide shutdown was called today [Thursday], and students were sent away from examination halls but remain stranded. There is no transport available, and the streets are deserted,” he said.

Sholomar emphasized the uncertainty and danger faced by students, including hundreds from Meghalaya who are studying medicine, engineering, and other professional courses in Bangladesh. “Everything has come to a standstill, and we are trying to stay indoors for our safety,” he added.

This evacuation effort underscores the critical importance of international cooperation and swift action in times of crisis, ensuring the well-being of students and citizens abroad.

Besides Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national President JP Nadda are likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony of both the Chief Ministers. Nagaland political stalwart and its longest-serving chief minister Neiphiu Rio is set to assume office for a fifth consecutive term after the convincing win.
Rio on Saturday had tendered his resignation as Chief Minister of Nagaland to Governor La Ganesan and staked claim to form the new government in the state.
The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party-Bharatiya Janata Party retained power in the Nagaland election, with the two parties having secured 37 seats in the 60-member assembly.
Rio won the Northern Angami-II Assembly constituency, trouncing Seyievilie Sachu of the Congress by a mammoth margin of 15,824 votes. He bagged a total of 17,045 votes, which comes to 92.87 per cent of the total votes polled in the seat.
Notably, a history was scripted in Nagaland when the state elected its first women legislators in its 60 years of statehood.
The two women lawmakers – Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse of the ruling NDPP defeated the sitting MLAs in Western Angami and Dimapur-III seats respectively.
The Northeast state saw a triangular contest as Congress and CPI (M), which have been arch rivals for years, stitched a pre-poll alliance to defeat the ruling BJP.
In Meghalaya, the NPP-led alliance, with the support of 45 MLAs two of the BJP has staked claim to form the government in the state.
Among the allies, the eight cabinet berths will go to the NPP, two to the United Democratic
Sangma’s NPP won 26 seats in the Assembly elections and is all set to form the government and become the chief minister for a second consecutive term.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Raj Bhawan in Shillong where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be present.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma won from the South Tura constituency with a margin of 5,016 against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bernard N Marak.
United Democratic Party (UDP) bagged 11 seats in the results of assembly polls announced on Thursday. Congress won five seats. Trinamool Congress, which had inducted all Congress MLAs in the previous assembly, also got five seats.
BJP, People’s Democratic Front and Hill State People’s Democratic Party bagged two seats each. Voice of the People Party got four seats.
BJP and NPP were partners in the outgoing government but fought the assembly polls separately.

According to the Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor, three-tier security arrangements have been made with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) guarding the innermost layer and State Armed police will keep vigil over the second and third layers. “We have 13 counting centres across the state, 12 in all district headquarters, one in Sohra Sub Division. 22 CAPF companies have been retained for purposes of ensuring 24×7 safeguard protocols in respect of the strong rooms containing the polled Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) of 3,419 polling stations in the 59 poll-going Assembly Constituencies and will stay on till April 4 for any post-poll contingencies/exigencies,” Kharkongor said.
The counting centres are all placed under CCTV and webcast surveillance. There will be a total of 383 rounds of counting, with a maximum of nine rounds for the biggest assembly constituency Mawlai in East Khasi Hills District and four rounds for smaller ACs like Dalu in West Garo Hills District, informed the CEO.
West Garo Hills District Counting Centre caters to 11 assembly constituencies and is the second-largest counting centre in the state.
Election Commission has deployed 27 Counting Observers and over 500 micro observers are assisting the Counting Observers at each table.
In seven polling stations, there were cases of non-deletion of mock poll data. These include a polling station in East Jaintia Hills, Khliehriat AC, one in West Khasi Hills, Rambhai AC, two in East Garo hills, Songsak AC, two in South West Garo Hills, Salmanpara ACs and one in Mylliem AC. In the above polling stations, District Electoral Officers (DEO) and ROs (returning Officer) have been directed to strictly follow Election Commission protocols on counting.
Additionally, concerned DEOs have issued necessary orders pertaining to traffic arrangements and victory processions post-counting in respect of their concerned districts.
Ahead of the counting of votes for Meghalaya assembly polls, Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) chief Conrad Sangma met Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Tuesday night. Notably, Sarma is the convenor of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
A top source of NPP told ANI that both Chief Ministers took part in a crucial meeting in a hotel in Guwahati and the meeting lasted for half an hour.
Following the meeting, the Meghalaya Chief Minister returned to Tura in West Garo Hills.
Earlier on Tuesday, Meghalaya CM hinted at forming a post-poll alliance to form the government.
The exit polls published by various media groups predicted that the northeastern state would have a hung house, with Sangma’s NPP emerging as the single-largest party.
Following this, Conrad Sangma said that he would keep all options to form a stable government.
Of the 60 Assembly constituencies in Meghalaya, 36 constituencies fall in Khasi, Jaintia Hills region while 24 are in Garo Hills region.
However, polling for the Sohiong Assembly constituency was postponed following the demise of the state’s former Home Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate from the seat HDR Lyngdoh.

Following unrest at the Mukroh village on the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday that left six people dead, Assam on Sunday lifted travel restrictions to Meghalaya, according to news agency ANI.

Speaking to ANI, DCP Sudhakar Singh from the Guwahati City Police said on Sunday that the police removed barricades in the Jorabat area along the Assam-Meghalaya border and allowed all vehicles to enter Meghalaya.

Travel restrictions were removed two days after Assam Police permitted trucks carrying commodities into Meghalaya for the first time since tensions between the two states flared up. However, only automobiles registered in Meghalaya were permitted admission.

Vehicles bearing Assam licence plates had been warned not to enter Meghalaya by the police in the past because they might be targeted.

Violence broke out on Tuesday between locals and an Assamese contingent made up of police and forest guards, leaving six people dead and a number of others hurt. After the contingent stopped a truck carrying timber that had been unlawfully cut, a fight broke out.

Five of the six victims were from Meghalaya, and one was a forest guard from Assam.

Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, made it clear two days after the incident that there was no border dispute at the centre of the altercation. “Just to be clear, contrary to how it is depicted in the national media, the incident had nothing to do with the border. In essence, it was a dispute between the police and the villagers over specific forest timbers”, according to ANI, Sarma stated on Thursday.
