This has been a first historic achievement for organ transplantation in Rajasthan. For the first time, the organs were airlifted through helicopters. While one kidney, two lungs, and the heart have been sent to Jaipur for transplant surgeries, another kidney and the liver will be flown to AIIMS Jodhpur.

The donor was 33-year-old Vishnu Prasad, a resident of Manpura Pipaji in Jhalawar district, who sustained injuries during a scuffle on December 10 and was declared brain-dead on December 12. Following his family’s consent to organ donation, the organs were dispatched to assist six patients.

SMS Hospital Superintendent Dr. Deepak Maheshwari confirmed the transplant success in Jaipur. The helicopter carrying the organs landed at SMS Medical College in Jaipur, and a green corridor was created for its quick transfer to SMS Hospital. From there, it continued its flight to Jodhpur for the delivery of the remaining organs.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Ramsevak Yogi from Jhalawar Medical College said that Prasad was admitted on December 11 with severe injuries and was declared brain-dead by a medical committee. Prasad’s family, in the presence of Jhalawar District Collector Ajay Singh Rathore and other senior doctors, gave their consent for the donation.

Carbuncles are commonly seen on the back of the neck, shoulders or thighs. Large carbuncles are unsightly and can lead to complications.
</excerpt>

Carbuncles are painful skin conditions caused when hair follicles get infected with bacteria and form pus filled painful bumps under the skin. This condition can be severe especially when these boils become interconnected and large. The most common bacteria found in carbuncles is Staphylococcus Aureus. Carbuncles are commonly seen on the back of the neck, shoulders or thighs. Large carbuncles are unsightly and can lead to complications.

Causes of Carbuncle formation
The bacteria often enters the skin through hair follicles. Sometimes these microorganisms enter the body through cuts or breaks in the skin. Several factors increase the risk of carbuncle formation. These include:

=Weak immune system: Medical conditions like diabetes, cancer and immunodeficiencies impair the healing response of the body and may be responsible for carbuncle formation.
=Improper hygiene: Not keeping the skin clean can lead to microbial infections
=Friction and sweating: The neck and thighs are more susceptible to developing carbuncles due to constant friction and sweating in these areas
=Contact infection: Carbuncles commonly occur in those who are in close contact with someone already having a staphylococcal infection
Symptoms of Carbuncles
Carbuncles manifest with the following symptoms:
=Multiple painful swollen red lumps that may grow in size and become interconnected to form one large abscess
=Pus formation: Carbuncles are severely infected conditions and may drain pus that is foul smelling
=Systemic symptoms: When the carbuncle is growing, it can be accompanied by fever and chills which are often a sign of an actively spreading bacterial infection. Fatigue and malaise indicating the body s response to infection is another symptom accompanied with carbuncle.
Management of Carbuncles
A carbuncle needs to be handled with self-care and medical treatment.
Self-care: Applying warm compresses to the area helps to reduce pain and enables pus drainage. Over the counter pain killers can be used to minimise discomfort. Good hygiene practices like keeping the area clean and avoiding sharing personal items like towels or razors are crucial in preventing the spread of infection to other family members in close contact.

Medical Intervention:
1. Antibiotics: Oral and topical antibiotics known to kill the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus are the first line of treatment for carbuncles. Antibiotics reduce the infection and improve systemic symptoms associated with carbuncles. Sometimes if the infection cannot be contained, intravenous antibiotics are found more effective.

2.Incision and drainage: If the carbuncle does not drain pus on its own and continues to get larger and inflamed, a dermatologist may perform a minor surgical procedure to release the pus

Prevention of carbuncles
1.Practice good hygiene: Hand hygiene is crucial in preventing carbuncles in susceptible individuals. If there are tiny red bumps forming, avoid touching those areas as the infection may rapidly spread in nearby skin.

2.Skin care: Minor injuries like cuts and abrasions should be promptly treated with a topical antibiotic and covered with a band aid. Regular bathing and washing the skin in areas prone to sweating can reduce the risk of infection

3.Managing underlying health conditions: Conditions that weaken the immune system especially diabetes should be kept in check with regular blood tests and medications.

4.Avoiding close contact: Proximity with infected individuals should be avoided in order to prevent the risk of acquiring similar bacterial infections
5.Prompt Treatment: Seek medical attention for painful boils that do not resolve or worsen over days

Conclusion
Carbuncles are completely treatable conditions with proper care and timely medical intervention.
Most of them recover without any major complications. However, if ignored for long, they can rarely lead to more debilitating conditions like cellulitis and sepsis. Hence it is important to seek medical advice for proper diagnosis and faster recovery.

</excerpt>

A popular child actor turned eye surgeon, Dr Mickey is a distinguished Ophthalmologist, specializing in Refractive cataract and Lasik surgeries, he holds many degrees such as MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FICO (London), and MRCS (Edinburgh). He shares insights on LASIK surgery and assures it is a safe and quick procedure.

I am an Ophthalmologist and have reversed my own -8 powered spectacles with LASIK and am leading a glass free life today. I can personally attest to its transformative power. The constant dependency on spectacles was not only inconvenient but also limited my activities and lifestyle. Setting myself as an example I could recommend, convince and perform LASIK for many of my friends and family members apart from my regular patients. But when I decided to undergo LASIK, I was both excited and anxious, harboring many common fears that my patients express today.
Before I shed light on the fears, let’s understand the basics.

Understanding Vision Numbers:
=Why and how do we get a number?
=The human body is made in proportion. If the length of your eyeball increases disproportionately to your height, you may have difficulty seeing far-sighted objects.
=The eyeball becomes slightly elongated towards the back, which is not visible to the naked eye. Glasses help correct this, allowing clear vision.
=Typically, distance vision numbers increase until the age of 21, as maximum height is usually reached by then.
=LASIK Surgery: Where is it Performed?
=Eye Structure and LASIK:
=The eyeball is approximately 2.5 cm in length from front to back.
=LASIK is performed on the front 0.004% of the eye surface (about the size of a single hair strand).
=No cuts are made inside the eyeball; LASIK is done on a surface you regularly touch (e.g., placing contact lenses).
Common Fears About LASIK Surgery: Debunked

1.Pain:
=Fear: LASIK might be painful.
=Reality: Advanced numbing drops are used, making the procedure painless.

2.Movement or Blinking During Surgery:
=Fear: You may move or close your eyes during the procedure.
=Reality: Tiny, painless clips hold your eyes in place, preventing movement or closure.

3.Loss of Eyesight:
=Fear: LASIK might cause blindness.
=Reality: No documented cases link LASIK to blindness. Studies and international councils confirm LASIK does not cause blindness. The risk of losing eyesight from contact lens-related infections is higher than from LASIK.

4.Post-Surgery
Restrictions:
=Fear: You’ll need to wear black sunglasses, stay in a dark room, and avoid screens for a month.
=Reality: Modern LASIK procedures are quick, with most activities resuming within 48 hours. Screen usage does not harm your eyes before or after LASIK.

5.Cost:
=Fear: LASIK is expensive.
=Reality: While LASIK has a higher upfront cost, it is cheaper than the cumulative cost of glasses and contact lenses over a lifetime. The improvement in lifestyle and quality of life makes LASIK worth the investment.

Final Thoughts:
=Procedure Efficiency:
=LASIK is an extensively researched procedure performed on millions of eyes globally.
=Each eye takes about 5-10 minutes, with a 30-minute observation period afterward.

Consultation
Advice:
=Avoid basing your decision on rumors or unqualified opinions.
Always seek a detailed pre-LASIK evaluation and discuss with a credible LASIK surgeon.
=Avoid forming opinions based on information from Google or social media alone.

Healthy kidneys filter out toxic waste from the body. When they are damaged or fail to function optimally, waste can start to build up in the body, which can affect the functioning of other organs as well. Kidney failure can be acute or chronic. However, in both cases, it requires immediate medical intervention.
Sometimes a person with early kidney damage remains unaware of their condition, which can often lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. If the disease goes unchecked, it can progress and lead to irreversible damage to the kidneys.

Treatment for end-stage renal disease or failure is usually dialysis or a kidney transplant. While both have their pros and cons, studies have shown better clinical outcomes with a kidney transplant as opposed to dialysis.
In this article, we will understand the difference between the two treatments and which one might be a better choice under specific conditions.

Kidney Transplant versus Dialysis: Understanding the Differences
To understand the difference between a kidney transplant and dialysis, it is important to first understand them individually.
Just like kidneys filter out waste and excess water from your blood, dialysis is an artificial procedure that performs the same function using filtering machines or equipment. It is also called renal replacement therapy. It prevents the waste products in the blood from reaching hazardous levels. It can be hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, intermittent or continuous, depending upon the type opted for by the patient or prescribed by the doctor. Hemodialysis is usually done up to three times a week. In this procedure, a person’s blood is circulated outside the body through a filtering machine, and the filtered blood is returned to the body using a flexible tube called a catheter. This 3 to 5-hour process may take place in a hospital, dialysis center, or even at home under the guidance of experts.
In peritoneal dialysis, filtration happens through diffusion. The tiny blood vessels inside the lining of the abdomen filter blood with the aid of a dialysis solution, which is instilled through a small surgically placed tube in the abdomen.
For some people, peritoneal dialysis gives a greater sense of freedom. However, it is fraught with a higher chance of infection if strict antisepsis is not maintained.
Kidney transplant involves the surgical placement of a healthy kidney from a donor into the recipient’s body. The patient can survive with just one healthy transplanted kidney, which compensates for the two damaged kidneys.

Which One is Better?
This depends on many factors. Pre-existing comorbidities, age, availability of a donor, and economic concerns play pivotal roles in making a decision. Both treatment options can be appropriate for specific conditions. Dialysis can be a suitable treatment option for those of advanced age, poor performance status, and limited life expectancy.
Dialysis is more economical than a kidney transplant initially, but in the long run, it can cost more than a transplant. Moreover, dialysis can make a person more dependent on day-to-day medical intervention, which can be taxing for the patient. It restricts them from traveling.

Patients can develop infections in the dialysis catheter, or in rare cases, a blood clot. Dialysis also interferes with fertility. Women who are on dialysis might find it difficult to get pregnant due to the higher levels of waste products to process. The average life span of a patient on dialysis is 5 years. Due to these risks and complications, most patients on dialysis have a poor quality of life and an average survival of 5 years after commencing dialysis.
A kidney transplant, on the other hand, can be initially expensive, but it significantly improves a patient’s quality of life. It can make a person less dependent on day-to-day care, give them more freedom or autonomy, and allow them to lead a more productive life with fewer restrictions.

Studies have shown that a kidney transplant is a better treatment option in terms of increasing life expectancy and improving quality of life. After a kidney transplant, the patient needs to be on immunosuppressant drugs for life to avoid transplant kidney rejection. The donor must be a willing, fit person who is related to the recipient.
Both treatment options can be recommended for patients with kidney failure, depending on their health condition and other related factors.

While genetics, stress, and medical conditions are well-known factors, the role of vitamins and minerals in maintaining healthy hair is often overlooked. Here, we delve into how supplementing your diet with the right vitamins and minerals can promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.
</excerpt>

Hair loss is a common concern that affects people of all ages. While genetics, stress, and medical conditions are well-known factors, the role of vitamins and minerals in maintaining healthy hair is often overlooked. Here, we delve into how supplementing your diet with the right vitamins and minerals can promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.

Vitamin A is essential for cell growth and differentiation, including the cells in the hair follicle. It helps in sebum production, which keeps the scalp moisturized and hair healthy. However, excessive vitamin A can lead to hair loss. To maintain healthy hair, it is crucial to balance vitamin A intake, preferably through a diet rich in beta-carotene (found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach) rather than excessive supplementation.

Vitamin B, particularly biotin (B7), are often associated with hair health. Biotin is a cofactor for enzymes involved in fatty acid metabolism, which is vital for hair structure. While biotin deficiency is rare, ensuring adequate intake through diet (eggs, nuts, and whole grains) can support hair growth.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect hair from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. It also aids in collagen synthesis, a crucial component of hair structure, and improves iron absorption, which is vital for hair growth. Including vitamin C-rich foods like citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers in your diet can bolster your hair health.
Vitamin D plays a role in the hair follicle cycle, and its deficiency can disrupt the normal hair growth process. Sun exposure is a natural source of vitamin D, but supplements can help maintain adequate levels, especially in individuals with limited sun exposure or absorption issues.

Iron deficiency is a well-known cause of hair loss, particularly in women. Iron helps red blood cells carry oxygen to hair follicles, essential for their growth and repair. Foods rich in iron include red meat, beans, and fortified cereals. Pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C can enhance absorption.

Zinc deficiency can lead to hair loss and scalp issues. While zinc supplements are available, excessive intake can interfere with other minerals and cause toxicity. It’s best to obtain zinc through a balanced diet that includes meat, shellfish, legumes, and seeds. Maintaining a well-balanced diet rich in these essential vitamins and minerals can support hair health and prevent hair loss. While supplements can help address deficiencies, it’s important to avoid excessive intake and consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen. By understanding the role of micronutrients in hair growth, you can take proactive steps to maintain a healthy, vibrant mane.

Despite the best efforts of the medical team, her condition deteriorated rapidly and she was declared brain.
</excerpt>

On the morning of 15th August, 72-year-old Ms. Kavita Rajkumar Goel, was found unconscious in her house. Her family immediately rushed her to HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka. Ms. Kavita was resuscitated and placed on the ventilator. An urgent CT scan of head revealed massive brain hemorrhage. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, her condition deteriorated rapidly and she was declared brain.

The family was counseled for organ donation and post their approval both the kidneys, corneas, and skin were donated. Heart and lungs could not be donated in view of her age and the liver was medically unsuitable for transplantation. Her kidneys were allocated by NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization). One kidney was transplanted into a 52-year-old female at HCMCT Manipal Hospital Dwarka, while the other kidney was transplanted in a 63-year-old male at Artemis Hospital. Ms. Goel’s corneas and skin were also donated, offering hope and healing to multiple recipients.

Dr. Shrikanth Srinivasan, Chairman, Manipal Institute of Critical Care Medicine, HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka said, “After stabilization of her condition an urgent CT scan was done which revealed that she has suffered from a massive brain hemorrhage. Despite intensive treatment under the care of Neurosurgery and Critical Care teams, she could not recover and was declared brain dead on 16th August 2024 at 10:10 pm.”

Dr (Col) Avnish Seth VSM, Chairman, Manipal Institute of Gastroenterology & Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences, HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka and Head Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST) said, “The team worked closely with the patient’s family, providing them with the required information and support so that they could make an informed decision. The family was very keen to donate all her organs. However, based on the age and fitness of organs, only kidneys could be retrieved. Corneas and skin were also retrieved by eye and skin banks.”

Ms Viji Varghese, Director, HCMCT Manipal Hospital, Dwarka said, “The family’s decision to donate organs made a difference in the lives of others. The legacy of the donor will live on through the lives she has saved. Donating one’s organs is a gift of life, it is an opportunity to give someone else a second chance in life. We strongly encourage everyone to think about organ donation and to register as an organ donor. We can save lives if we work together.”

There is a wide gap between patients who need transplants and the organs that are available in India. 1.8 lakh people suffer from kidney failure every year, however, only 13,426 kidney transplants are done in 2023. An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 liver transplants are needed annually in India but only 4491 were performed in 2023. Similarly, of several thousand who suffer from heart failure, only 221 got a heart transplant. In the case of Corneas, about 25,000 transplants are done every year against a requirement of 1 lakh. The noble act of organ donation highlights the pressing need for organ donations in India, as there is a significant disparity between patients awaiting transplants and the availability of organs. Increasing awareness and participation in organ donation can bridge this gap and offer hope to countless lives in need.

Smoking is linked to serious health risks, including lung disease, heart disease, and other life-threatening conditions. To protect yourself and your loved ones, quitting smoking is crucial. Smoking increases the risk of severe health issues for both smokers and those around them.

Dr. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Head of Medical Oncology at SHALBY Sanar International Hospitals in Gurugram, advises that smokers should undergo the following eight essential tests:

Chest X-Ray: This vital test provides an image of your chest, helping detect any smoking-related issues.

Spirometry: Also known as a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), this simple breathing test measures how well air moves in and out of your lungs by having you blow and inhale into a machine.

CT Scan: A Low-Dose Computed Tomography (LD-CT) scan is crucial for identifying major issues like lung cancer early. It provides detailed images to help diagnose problems at an earlier stage.

High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (Hs-CRP) Test: This blood test measures C-Reactive Protein levels to assess general inflammation in your body, helping to evaluate your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Electrocardiogram (ECG): An ECG monitors your heart’s rhythm and can detect potential heart issues early, which is particularly important for smokers.

Diabetes Screening: Smoking increases insulin resistance and blood sugar levels, making diabetes screening an important test for smokers.

Vitamin D Blood Test: Smokers over 40 should get this test as they often have lower Vitamin D levels, which can impact overall health.

Kidney Function Tests: Smoking can increase the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially if you have diabetes or heart disease. As CKD often has no early symptoms, regular screening is essential.

Understanding the impact of smoking on your health and seeking professional help can make a significant difference. Early detection through these tests can be life-saving, and quitting tobacco can greatly improve your quality of life.

</excerpt>

Blood sugar is the body’s primary energy source. Insulin plays a key role in regulating the blood glucose level and keeps it within a normal range. Uncontrolled blood sugar also known as Dysglycemia is when insulin doesn’t work as it should, and (blood sugar) glucose stays in the blood. This creates high blood sugar, known as hyperglycemia. Blood sugar can also go too low. This is a condition known as hypoglycemia.

Hyperglycemia in Diabetes:
Resistance to the action of insulin or deficiency of insulin can lead to hyperglycemia

Common complications of High Blood Sugar
= Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic Retinopathy affects the eye, especially the blood vessels around the retina, leading to vision loss or blindness.
= Diabetic Nephropathy
Diabetic Nephropathy affects the kidneys, causing them to lose function, leading to kidney failure over time, requiring dialysis or transplant.
= Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic Neuropathy affects the nerves, causing numbness in the feet, legs, hands, or arms. It can further damage nerves, affecting the digestive, reproductive, urinary systems and heart.
= Diabetic Foot-Ulcers
Diabetic Foot Ulcers are open sores that develop on different parts of the feet due to nerve damage, poor blood circulation, and infection. They can be very difficult to heal and, when left untreated, can lead to gangrene or amputation.

=Heart attack and stroke
High blood sugar for a period can damage the blood vessels. This may lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Hypoglycemia in Diabetes:
This is often related to medications for diabetes treatment or when the intake of sugar is insufficient or delayed
Common complications of Low Blood Sugar
=Symptoms
Low blood sugar causes hunger, shakiness, sweating, dizziness, headache, confusion, irritability, or fainting
=Brain Damage
Low blood sugar can deprive the brain of oxygen and sugar, damaging brain cells and causing cognitive impairment or neurological disorders.

=Coma
Low blood sugar causes loss of consciousness that can further result in brain damage, organ failure, or death.

=Cardiac Arrest
Low blood sugar can affect the heart rhythm and blood pressure, causing cardiac arrhythmias, heart attack, or cardiac arrest.
Ways to control High Blood Sugar
=Adhere to the outlined treatment plan
=Monitor the blood sugar levels regularly
=Exercise regularly and stay physically active
=Drink plenty of water and have a balanced diet
=Manage stress and practice relaxation techniques

Ways to control Low Blood Sugar
=Limit or avoid alcohol intake
=Avoid skipping meals or fasting
=Carry a source of fast-acting sugar tablet
=Wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace
=Supervise the blood sugar levels at intervals

Blood Sugar is a vital component of the body’s metabolism and health. However, it causes irreversible damage to various organs and systems when it becomes too high or too low. Therefore, it is essential to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle and follow the treatment plan prescribed by healthcare experts to prevent or manage dysglycemia. While it may prove to be difficult, patients can seek guidance from peer groups, support programs and associations that provide education and support for people living with diabetes or prediabetes. Humrahi helps patients understand their condition, monitor their blood sugar, follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and adhere to treatment plans. Humrahi also connects patients with peers, mentors, and experts who can offer emotional and practical support and motivate them to achieve their health goals and live healthier lives.

</excerpt>

Organ donation is a vital medical practice that offers hope and life to those suffering from severe organ failure. However, many myths and misconceptions surround organ donation, which can deter people from becoming donors. Let’s address and debunk some of these prevalent myths.

Myth 1: “If I register as an organ donor, doctors won’t try as hard to save my life.”
This misconception is unfounded. Medical professionals are dedicated to saving lives and only consider organ donation after all efforts to save a patient’s life have been exhausted. The decision to donate organs is separate from the treatment and care provided to a patient.

Myth 2: “Organ donation is a painful process for the donor.”
Organ donation occurs only after death, so it does not involve any pain or discomfort for the donor. The procedure is conducted with respect and dignity, ensuring that the donor’s body is treated with the utmost care.

Myth 3: “I’m too old or have a medical condition, so my organs won’t be useful.”
Age and medical conditions do not automatically disqualify someone from being an organ donor. Organs are assessed individually for their suitability, and many people with chronic conditions or advanced age have successfully donated organs that have saved lives.
Myth 4: “You have to be a perfect match to donate organs.”

Perfect matches are not always necessary for organ donation. Medical teams use a range of criteria, such as blood type and tissue compatibility, to find suitable matches. Many successful transplants occur with less-than-perfect matches.

Myth 5: “Organ donation is too complicated and expensive.”
The costs associated with organ donation, including medical expenses and transplant procedures, are covered by the recipient’s insurance. Families of donors do not incur additional costs due to donation.

Myth 6: “My organs will be removed too soon.”
Organ removal occurs only after a patient has been confirmed deceased through strict medical protocols. The procedure is carried out with meticulous attention to legal and ethical standards.

Myth 7: “Organ donation is only beneficial to those on a transplant list.”
Organ donation benefits many individuals. For example, a single donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and improve the lives of many others through tissue donation. Additionally, the availability of organs can advance medical research and improve transplant techniques.

Myth 8: “Organ donors are not allowed to have open-casket funerals.”
Organ donation does not prevent an open-casket funeral. The procedure is carried out with care, and the body is restored to a state that allows for traditional funeral services, respecting the wishes of the donor and their family.

Myth 9: “Organ donation requires a long recovery period for the donor’s family.”
Organ donation does not affect the donor’s family in terms of recovery time. The process is managed with minimal impact on the family’s emotional or physical well-being, focusing on respecting the donor’s wishes and facilitating a dignified process.
Myth 10: “Individuals with tattoos cannot donate organs.”

Yes, you can donate organs even if you have tattoos. Tattoos themselves do not disqualify you from being an organ donor. However, there are some considerations. For instance, if you have a tattoo that was done with non-sterile equipment or if you have a history of certain infections or diseases, this might affect your eligibility. But in general, having tattoos is not a barrier to organ donation.

The truth is that organ donation is a compassionate and respectful process that follows stringent medical and ethical guidelines. It offers a chance to make a profound difference in the lives of those in need, and every registered donor has the potential to save multiple lives. By embracing accurate information and overcoming misconceptions, we can encourage more individuals to consider organ donation, ultimately helping to bridge the gap between those waiting for transplants and the life-saving organs they desperately need.

</excerpt>

Leaky gut syndrome, also known as increased intestinal permeability, occurs when the gut lining’s tight junctions become compromised. This allows undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria to seep into the bloodstream, triggering inflammation and potentially leading to various health issues, including inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and heart disease.

Although leaky gut can result from multiple factors such as stress, medications, and an unhealthy diet, there’s good news: certain functional ingredients can help repair the gut lining and restore intestinal health.

A crucial dietary approach for managing leaky gut is to avoid foods that can aggravate the condition. It’s beneficial to limit intake of sugar, refined carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats, which can increase intestinal permeability. Instead, focus on consuming ample dietary fiber from vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Fiber supports beneficial gut bacteria and promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids essential for gut health.

Probiotics are also vital in healing leaky gut. These beneficial bacteria play a key role in maintaining the gut lining’s integrity, regulating immune function, and fostering the growth of other health-promoting microbes. Incorporate probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables into your diet, or consider a high-quality probiotic supplement to bolster gut health.

Herbs and spices can offer additional support in healing leaky gut. For instance, ginger has been found to modulate inflammatory pathways and exhibit antimicrobial properties, making it a valuable addition to a gut-friendly diet. Peppermint oil is another effective remedy, particularly for irritable bowel syndrome, which is often associated with increased intestinal permeability.

Mushrooms are another functional ingredient worth mentioning. Many varieties contain prebiotic polysaccharides that nourish the gut microbiome and aid in producing anti-inflammatory short-chain fatty acids. Mushrooms also play a role in immune system modulation and have been shown to offer protective effects against conditions like nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity, which are often linked to leaky gut.

Incorporating these gut-healing ingredients into your diet can significantly contribute to restoring intestinal integrity and improving overall health. However, it’s important to remember that healing leaky gut is a gradual process. For personalized advice and to ensure the best approach for your specific health needs, consult with a healthcare professional. By combining these dietary strategies with professional guidance, you can make meaningful strides toward achieving lasting gut health and overall well-being.

</excerpt>

Lipolysis injections, also known as “fat-dissolving injections”, have been gaining popularity in recent years as a way to get rid of unwanted fat in certain areas of the body. These injections work by injecting a solution directly into the fatty tissue, causing the fat cells to break down and be eliminated by the body. While this may sound like a quick and easy way to achieve a slimmer figure, doctors want patients to know about the potential dangers of this procedure.

One of the main concerns with lipolysis injections is the lack of regulation and research surrounding them. While other cosmetic procedures, such as liposuction, have been extensively studied and regulated, lipolysis injections have not undergone the same level of scrutiny. This means that the long-term effects and potential risks of these injections are not well understood.

Furthermore, there have been reports of serious complications from lipolysis injections, such as skin ulcerations, scarring, and even tissue death. These side effects can occur due to the injection of too much solution or improper technique, which can lead to damage to surrounding tissues. In some cases, these complications may require corrective surgery or leave permanent disfigurement.

Another concern with lipolysis injections is the use of unlicensed or inexperienced practitioners. Many patients seek out these injections from spas or unlicensed providers, which can put them at a higher risk for complications. Only a licensed and trained medical professional should perform these injections, as they have the necessary knowledge and expertise to minimize the risks and ensure proper technique.

In addition, lipolysis injections may not be appropriate for everyone. Patients with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, liver disease, or blood clotting disorders, may not be good candidates for this procedure. It is important for patients to disclose their full medical history to their doctor before undergoing any cosmetic procedure.

Furthermore, it is important for patients to have realistic expectations when considering lipolysis injections. This procedure is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise, and it should not be seen as a quick fix for weight loss. In fact, the injected fat may return in other areas of the body if proper lifestyle changes are not made. Additionally, lipolysis injections are not effective for large areas of fat and are generally recommended for small trouble spots.

While lipolysis injections may seem like a tempting solution for unwanted fat, it is important for patients to be aware of the potential dangers associated with this procedure. Patients should only consider this procedure if performed by a licensed and experienced medical professional and after fully understanding the risks and limitations. It is also crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle to achieve long-term results. As always, it is best to consult with a doctor who can provide individualized advice and recommendations based on a patient’s specific needs and concerns.

</excerpt>

A recent study has highlighted the potential benefits of seaweed antioxidants in the fight against Parkinson’s disease, offering new hope for prevention strategies. Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and motor skills, has long been a focus of research into dietary and lifestyle interventions that may help reduce risk.

The Role of Antioxidants in Parkinson’s Disease

Antioxidants are compounds that help combat oxidative stress, a condition where harmful free radicals damage cells and tissues. Oxidative stress has been implicated in the development and progression of various neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s. By neutralizing these free radicals, antioxidants can potentially protect neurons from damage and improve overall brain health.

Seaweed as a Rich Source of Antioxidants

Seaweed, particularly varieties like nori, kombu, and wakame, has been identified as a rich source of antioxidants. These marine plants contain compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids, which are known for their antioxidant properties. The study in question focused on these seaweed-derived antioxidants and their effects on neural health.

Study Findings

The research involved a series of experiments assessing the impact of seaweed antioxidants on cellular models and animal subjects. The findings suggest that these antioxidants can significantly reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in neural tissues. Specifically, compounds found in seaweed were observed to inhibit the formation of toxic protein aggregates associated with Parkinson’s disease.

Mechanisms of Action

The study indicates that seaweed antioxidants may work through several mechanisms to offer protective effects. These include:

Scavenging Free Radicals: Seaweed antioxidants neutralize harmful free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative damage to neurons.

Modulating Inflammatory Responses: These compounds help regulate inflammatory pathways that contribute to neuronal degeneration.

Enhancing Cellular Repair: Antioxidants from seaweed may support cellular repair processes, promoting healthier brain function.

Implications for Future Research

While the study’s results are promising, researchers emphasize that more clinical trials are needed to confirm the benefits of seaweed antioxidants in human populations. Future studies will focus on determining effective dosages, understanding long-term effects, and exploring how these antioxidants can be incorporated into dietary recommendations.

Practical Considerations

For those interested in harnessing the potential benefits of seaweed antioxidants, incorporating seaweed into the diet is a practical approach. Seaweed can be consumed in various forms, including soups, salads, and snacks. However, it’s essential to consult with healthcare professionals before making significant dietary changes, especially for individuals with specific health conditions or concerns.

Conclusion

The study’s findings provide a promising glimpse into the potential role of seaweed antioxidants in preventing Parkinson’s disease. By reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, these compounds may offer a valuable addition to preventive strategies against neurodegenerative diseases. As research continues, seaweed could emerge as a key player in maintaining brain health and reducing the risk of Parkinson’s disease.

A number of statistics confirm that Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is one of the leading causes of liver diseases. According to the National Library of Medicine, NAFLD has a global prevalence of around 25%. Consumption of alcohol undoubtedly damages the liver as it accumulates fat in your liver, which further potentially results in diseases like fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, etc.

Let’s get some insight on the factors that one needs to take care of:

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): As mentioned, NAFLD refers to the severe accumulation of fat in the liver, which is more commonly associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. It leads to inflammation and liver damage if not treated on time. There are preventable causes that can save us from developing NAFLD:

Obesity: Excessive weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, also known as Central Obesity increases the risk of developing a fatty liver. Obesity is closely linked to NAFLD. Hence, maintain an ideal weight, avoid cholesterol in your diet, and exercise daily.

Insulin resistance and diabetes: more diabetic patients face this condition. Insulin resistance is a condition where body cells become less responsive to insulin, and this is often associated with obesity, which further leads to the accumulation of fat in the liver. People with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk of developing a fatty liver. Take your concerned doctors’ help and be extra careful with regard to your diet and lifestyle.

High levels of Cholesterol: Very few people are aware that there are certain types of fats, and triglycerides is one of them that runs in your blood. Now, elevated levels of triglycerides in the blood can contribute to fatty liver. Excessive consumption of butter, oil, and processed foods increases the level of triglycerides, which start accumulating in your liver. Hence, limit the intake of junk and oily food. Consult a doctor if you have high cholesterol.

Rapid weight loss: Many people are seen following crash diets these days with the intent to have a healthy body, but this sudden drop in weight can enhance the risk of a number of hazards. Losing weight too quickly, especially through crash diets, can cause fatty liver because of excessive release of fatty acids from fat tissues. Hence, give time to your fitness regime instead of expecting quick results.

Medications: Certain medications, such as steroids, contraceptive pills, immune system modifying medications and anti-retroviral drugs used to treat HIV, also cause fatty liver. However, their judicial use is sometimes warranted in certain medical illnesses where medication should be under doctor’s supervision. Work on your underlying causes and talk to your concerned specialist in this regard.

Certain medical conditions: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), hypothyroidism, and Wilson disease (a genetic disorder affecting copper metabolism) are some of the medical conditions that may lead to the accumulation of fat in your liver. Prompt medical attention can help prevent fatty liver.

Nutritional factors: Poor diet and unhealthy eating habits, especially diets high in saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, and sugary foods, induce greater risk to the liver’s health.

Genetics: Genetic factors also play an important role in developing NAFLD. Keep an eye on your medical history. If your immediate family members are affected by any genetic condition, be regular with your check-ups and required tests in order to avoid any risk later.

Good liver health requires a comprehensive approach. Take a balanced diet, work on your underlying causes, never avoid any symptoms, and consult your concerned doctors as early as possible.

</excerpt>

Hepatitis is a medical condition characterized by liver inflammation, commonly caused by hepatitis viral (hepatitis A through E) infections. However, it can also arise from exposure to hepato-toxins, alcohol abuse, autoimmune diseases, and certain medications. Hepatitis is a significant global public health issue, affecting millions of people each year. Despite its widespread occurrence, many misconceptions about hepatitis persist, leading to stigma, inadequate care, and the spread of the disease.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India has the second highest prevalence of viral hepatitis globally. The National Center for Disease Control of 2021 estimates that about 10 million people in India are chronically infected with hepatitis B, with a prevalence rate of 0.68 to 1.16 per cent and for hepatitis C the prevalence is around 0.5 per cent.

Misconception 1: Hepatitis is a Single Disease

One of the misconceptions is that hepatitis is caused by one etiological agent. In reality, hepatitis is caused by five types of viruses named alphabetically as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Each type of hepatitis has different modes of transmission, diagnostic blood tests, preventive strategies and treatment protocols.

Hepatitis A is often transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food or water.

Hepatitis B and C are primarily spread through contact with infectious body fluids, such as blood. Hepatitis B can also be spread through sexual contact.

Hepatitis D occurs only in those infected with hepatitis B, as it requires the hepatitis B virus to replicate.[i]

Hepatitis E is typically transmitted through consumption of contaminated water.

Misconception 2: Hepatitis Only Affects Drug Users and Sexually Active Individuals

Another significant misconception is that hepatitis primarily affects drug users or individuals with multiple sexual partners. While intravenous drug use and unprotected sex are risk factors, hepatitis can affect anyone. For example: Hepatitis B can be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth, making it prevalent in certain regions where vaccination is less common.

Hepatitis C can be contracted from blood transfusions, as the infection spreads when blood, unsafe injection, which allows the virus to enter the bloodstream of a previously uninfected person.[ii] Understanding that hepatitis can impact anyone, regardless of their lifestyle, is crucial for reducing myths and encouraging widespread testing and vaccination.

Misconception 3: Hepatitis B and C are Incurable

Advances in medical science have significantly improved the prognosis for those with hepatitis B and C. While there is no cure for hepatitis B, it can be effectively managed with antiviral medications, which can reduce viral load and prevent liver damage. Additionally, a vaccine is available to prevent hepatitis B infection.

Hepatitis C, once considered a chronic and progressive disease, is now curable in most cases. The introduction of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications has revolutionized treatment, leading to cure rates exceeding 90 per cent. Early detection and treatment are key to achieving these outcomes.

Misconception 4: Hepatitis Symptoms are Always Apparent

Hepatitis can often be a silent disease, especially in its early stages. Many individuals with chronic hepatitis B or C are asymptomatic, meaning they exhibit no symptoms for years or even decades. This asymptomatic nature can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment, increasing the risk of severe liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.

Even when symptoms do appear, they can be nonspecific, such as fatigue, jaundice, dark urine, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite. Routine screening, especially for individuals in high-risk groups, is essential for early detection and treatment.

Misconception 6: Hepatitis B and C are Not Common in Developed Countries

Hepatitis B and C are serious health issues, not confined to developing countries. While higher prevalence rates are often seen in certain regions of Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, developed countries, including the United States and Western Europe, still face significant hepatitis B and C burdens. Factors such as migration, travel, and inadequate screening can contribute to the spread of these infections in developed nations.[iii]

Misconception 7: People with Hepatitis B or C Cannot get Married or Bear Children

This is a widespread concern amongst patients diagnosed with hepatitis B or C. Hepatitis B patients can have their partners vaccinated, and hepatitis C patients can achieve a complete cure with a short course of antiviral medications. Hepatitis B-positive mothers can safely go through pregnancy and their baby can be protected by a dose of hepatitis B immunoglobulin at birth and early vaccination. All pregnant women should be screened for the presence of hepatitis B and C, if not already known.

Myths and misinformation don’t have to stand in the way of good health. By understanding the facts about hepatitis, individuals can make informed decisions about prevention, testing, and treatment. One should talk to a healthcare provider for personalized guidance and support on this important health concern.

</excerpt>

SNHL also known as the Sensorineural Hearing Loss is a very serious global problem, for millions of patients, which is characterized by the impossibility to receive sound signals due to the dysfunction or damage of structural and functional elements of inner ear or neural connections in the auditory system. Other factors which are known to be associated with SNHL include noise exposure and aging, medications and heredity as it is seen that genetics make some people more vulnerable to SNHL than others.

Understanding Sensorineural Hearing Loss

SNHL may occur at birth (congenital) or can develop at any lag in the life span depending on certain factors. It is defined by the inability to hear quiet sounds or speech from a distance, distinguish between similar sounds or speech and hear clearly in noisy places. This type is usually characterized by impairment of the fine structures, such as hair cells in the cochlea or the interruption of the nerve pathways that convey information on sound to the cortex.

Genetics and SNHL: An Overview of System Architecture

Thus, it is apparent that genetics play a large role in SNHL, to the tune of 50–60 percent of congenital childhood hearing loss. These genetic causes can be classified into syndromic and non-syndromic. SNHL is accompanied by other disorders or structural anomalies if it is referred to as syndromic SNHL while, if SNHL is on its own then it is referred to as non-syndromic SNHL.

Types of Genetic Involvement

Syndromic SNHL: It also relates to the syndromal diseases that influence not only hearing but also other organs and systems of the human body. An example is the Usher syndrome, Waardenburg’s syndrome and Pendred syndrome. All these syndromes are characterized by specific gene changes that implicate hearing and other faculties.

Non-syndromic SNHL: The majority of the cases of genetic hearing loss come under this bracket and are characterized by hearing impairment as the initial and most predominant sign. Thus, non syndromic SNHL can be acquired through auto-somal dominant, auto-somal recessive and x-chromosome linked modes. There are several genotypes of hearing loss, but the most frequent is autosomal recessive one: both parents are carriers of the mutated gene, but they do not have the pathology.

Genetic Mutations and Pathways

SNHL can occur at any part of the hearing system because of the genetic mutations that affect the genes carrying the instructions for the formation of the auditory system. These may impair welcomed proteins that are cardinal to the onset, stead or function of hair cells within the cochlea which is the vegetative organ that translates vibrations of sound into electrical impulses that the brains can interpret.

Genetic Testing and Diagnosis

Genetic developments have extended to the diagnosis and treatment of genetic SNHL. It is true that genetic testing enables clinicians to determine particular mutations or genetic variations for hearing loss effectively. This data is also therefore beneficial in anticipating an individual’s hearing threshold temporal changes, recommended management and use in genetic counseling.

Application to the Course of Treatment and Therapy

With a large amount of SNHL’s root causes based on genes, the hope for cure for most patients at the present stage is still possible. Currently, scientists are focused on developing gene therapies which could either fix the specific genetic defects that lead to hearing impairment or provide a sort of ‘work around’ for those defects. These therapies could do so and thus open up prospects of similar genetic SNHL patients regaining or maintaining their hearing abilities.

Counseling and Support

Hearing loss therefore requires genetic counseling as one of the important factors of managing genetic SNHL. Genetic counselors assist in the definition of the inheritance of hearing loss, in determining the risks of transmission to next generations and counsel for reproductive strategies. Counseling also includes the provision of support in case the family or the patient decides to go for a genetic test and other issues to do with family planning.

Thus, it can be concluded that heredity has a great influence on the development of SNA. This paper outlines how genetic discoveries and technologies have improved the diagnosis, treatment, and counseling of SNHL. However, the difficulties are still present, and further research offers hope for the development of drugs in the future that can reduce or, in some cases, eliminate the effects of genetic hearing loss.

For those navigating thyroid issues, a well-rounded diet is key to supporting thyroid function and symptom management. Balancing nutrient intake is crucial for maintaining thyroid health and addressing associated symptoms.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that control various bodily functions, including metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. When the thyroid gland becomes imbalanced, it can lead to thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Symptoms may include fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, and difficulty regulating body temperature. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for supporting thyroid health and managing these conditions.

Thyroid-Friendly Foods:

Iodine-Rich Foods: Iodine is a vital nutrient for thyroid function, as it is a crucial component of thyroid hormones. Incorporating iodine-rich foods into your diet can help maintain optimal thyroid function. Good sources of iodine include seaweed, iodized salt, seafood, dairy products (like yogurt and milk), and eggs.

Selenium: Selenium is a mineral that plays a vital role in thyroid health, as it helps regulate thyroid hormone synthesis and metabolism. Foods rich in selenium include seafood, eggs, cereals, and other grains. Adding selenium-rich foods to your diet can support optimal thyroid function. It may help reduce inflammation associated with thyroid disorders.

Zinc: Zinc is essential for thyroid hormone production and helps regulate thyroid function. Foods high in zinc include oysters, chicken, pumpkin seeds, and lentils. Incorporating zinc-rich foods into your meals can support overall thyroid health and contribute to a balanced diet.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce inflammation in the thyroid gland. Sources of omega-3s include fatty fish like salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds. Including these foods in your diet can help support thyroid function and reduce the risk of inflammation-related thyroid disorders.

Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Antioxidants help protect the thyroid gland from oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals. Incorporating antioxidant-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds into your diet can support overall thyroid health and reduce the risk of thyroid-related complications.

Maintaining a balanced diet rich in thyroid-friendly foods is essential for supporting thyroid function and managing thyroid disorders effectively. By incorporating iodine-rich foods, selenium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants into your meals, you can promote optimal thyroid health and improve overall well-being. Additionally, consulting with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian can provide personalized guidance and support for managing thyroid conditions through diet and lifestyle modifications.

</excerpt>

India faces a growing diabetes epidemic, with over 74.9 million adults aged 20-79 affected in 2021, a number expected to rise to 124.9 million by 2045. Diabetes, marked by high blood glucose levels, can lead to severe complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, and nerve damage if not managed properly.
While diabetes cannot be cured, there is a beacon of hope: managing diabetes through natural methods. By incorporating specific foods and naturopathic strategies, individuals can effectively control their blood sugar levels and enhance their overall well-being. This article explores how dietary choices and naturopathic therapies can be powerful tools in the fight against diabetes.

Naturopathy for Managing Diabetes
In naturopathy, diabetes is considered as more than just an issue of high blood sugar; it is seen as a symptom of deeper imbalances within the body. The naturopathic approach focuses on identifying and correcting these imbalances through a combination of dietary adjustments, herbal treatments, nutritional supplements, lifestyle changes, and other natural therapies.

Naturopathic Dietary Approaches to Diabetes
Naturopathic treatments for diabetes aim to help patients achieve normal blood sugar levels without the use of medication. This approach often involves dietary modifications such as reducing refined carbohydrates and sugars, increasing fibre intake, incorporating more healthy concoctions and adding probiotics to the diet. Including raw foods is crucial as they are rich in essential enzymes that boost metabolism and provide vital vitamins and minerals for diabetics, with green leafy vegetables being highly recommended. Starchy vegetables like beets, potatoes, tapioca, sweet potatoes, and should be consumed sparingly and in limited quantities. Fig leaves are known for their strong anti-diabetic properties; a simple way to incorporate them is by boiling the leaves in filtered water and drinking it as tea in the morning. Bitter melon also has insulin-like properties that help lower blood sugar levels. Consuming bitter melon juice on an empty stomach in the morning can be an effective part of diabetes management.

Herbs to Manage Blood Sugar Levels
Fenugreek: Fenugreek seeds, packed with fibre, amino acids, saponins, and alkaloids, are effective in managing diabetes. Their high fibre content, around 50%, helps lower blood sugar by reducing carbohydrate absorption after meals.
Triphala: An ancient herbal remedy, Triphala consists of Haritaki, Bibhitaki, and amla, which together help lower blood glucose levels. Triphala stimulates the pancreas to increase insulin production.
Chamomile Tea: Chamomile tea, known for its antioxidant and anti-cancer properties, can also help regulate blood sugar. Studies indicate that drinking one cup of chamomile tea daily after meals can lower blood sugar, insulin, and insulin resistance.
Neem: Neem leaves are known for their ability to reduce blood sugar levels. Boil crushed neem leaves in water, strain, and drink the decoction to effectively manage hyperglycaemia.
Ginger: Ginger, a staple in Indian cuisine, enhances insulin secretion and increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin, helping in the management of diabetes.
Amla: Indian gooseberry, or amla, is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, making it effective in fighting free radicals. Amla is used in diabetes treatment to significantly lower blood sugar levels.

Daily Exercise for Diabetes Management
Regular exercise is a cornerstone in managing diabetes, as it helps control blood sugar levels, improves insulin sensitivity, and promotes overall health. Engaging in activities such as walking, cycling, and strength training can significantly lower blood glucose levels. Additionally, incorporating yoga into the routine can offer unique benefits for diabetic patients. Yoga not only enhances physical fitness but also reduces stress and improves mental well-being, both of which are crucial for effective diabetes management. Specific yoga poses can stimulate the pancreas and improve circulation, further aiding in blood sugar control. By committing to a regular exercise regimen that includes both aerobic activities and yoga, individuals with diabetes can achieve better blood glucose management and improve their quality of life.

Stress Management Techniques
Stress management plays a vital role in controlling diabetes, as chronic stress can lead to elevated blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. Incorporating practices such as meditation and pranayama (breath control) into daily routines can significantly alleviate stress and enhance overall well-being. Meditation helps calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional health, which in turn can positively impact blood sugar control. Pranayama techniques, such as deep breathing and alternate nostril breathing, promote relaxation and improve oxygenation, further supporting stress reduction. By integrating these mindful practices into their lifestyle, individuals with diabetes can better manage stress, leading to more stable blood glucose levels and improved health outcomes.

Natural Therapies to Manage Diabetes
Naturopathic therapies offer holistic approaches to managing diabetes, focusing on natural methods to enhance overall health and metabolic balance. Hydrotherapy plays a crucial role by improving metabolic rates and regulating blood sugar levels through techniques like warm water enemas, hip baths, immersion baths, and steam baths, which detoxify the body and promote cleansing. Mud therapy aids in restoring digestive and endocrine system balance, crucial for managing diabetes by eliminating toxins and improving circulation. Additionally, massage therapy acts as a passive exercise, enhancing circulation, reducing muscle tension, and alleviating stress, all beneficial for diabetic patients seeking natural treatment options.
Naturopathy adopts a philosophy centred on the body’s innate capacity to heal using natural remedies rather than pharmaceutical interventions. Its approach to treating diabetes focuses on alleviating symptoms and enhancing overall health through natural means, eschewing harsh medications and invasive procedures. By targeting underlying causes like inflammation and oxidative stress, naturopathic treatments enable the body to naturally regulate blood sugar levels and promote holistic well-being.

</excerpt>

At-Home Blood Sample Collection: The Importance of Temperature Integrity
Phlebotomy – the drawing of blood – has been practised for centuries and remains one of the most common invasive procedures in healthcare. Every step in the phlebotomy process affects the quality of the specimen, playing a crucial role in preventing laboratory errors, resulting in increasing stress for patients and their family members, increasing their bills,or even leading to deaths. A simple touch of a finger to locate a vein before needle insertion, for instance, increases the chance of contaminating a specimen.

The Root of the Problem: Pre-Analytic Errors
While lab errors can sometimes be dismissed as typographical, the real issue often lies in the pre-analytic phase of sample collection. This phase, which spans from sample collection to lab processing, is especially challenging in home sample collection. Maintaining proper temperature control is critical, as samples must be kept between 2-8°C to remain viable.
In India’s scorching climate, meeting this requirement is particularly difficult, especially when samples are transported over long distances, with extreme temperatures ranging from -2 degree to 50 degrees.
Why Temperature Control Matter
Blood samples exposed to extreme temperatures can undergo biochemical changes that compromise their integrity. Blood is a complex mixture of cells, proteins, enzymes, and molecules, and temperature fluctuations can cause proteins to denature, enzymes to deactivate, and cells to degrade. These changes lead to inaccurate test results and potential misdiagnoses, jeopardising patient care.
According to the University of California, Los Angeles, blood components should be stored* as follows:
=Red blood cells can be stored for up to 42 days at 1°C to 6°C, depending on additive.
= Platelets can be stored at 20°C to 24°C for up to 5 days with constant agitation.
= Plasma frozen at temperatures of -18°C or below within 8 hours of collection can be stored for up to 1 year.
Innovation in Thermal Packaging Solutions
To combat these challenges, thermal energy storage materials like Phase Change Materials (PCM) offer significant potential. The combination of PCM and insulation enables the thermal packaging industry to innovate and engineer solutions for the precise and safe transport of diagnostic samples. These materials provide an array of temperature options to create robust, custom solutions based on the required temperature, duration, and criticality.
PCMs absorb or release energy as they change phase, providing precise temperature control. Unlike traditional ice, PCMs offer long-lasting thermal stability. When designed with a phase transition temperature matching the ideal storage range, PCMs ensure samples remain within the 2-8°C window, even in extreme conditions.

Need for Different Approaches and Temperatures for Different Samples
Pre-validated temperature-controlled packaging using PCMs can maintain the critical 2-8°C range. This technology not only prevents temperatures from rising above 8°C but also keeps them from dropping below 2°C, even during India’s hot summers.
Certain samples, such as blood platelets, require controlled room temperatures between +15 to +25°C. Specific PCMs designed to maintain this range are used instead of gel packs or ice packs, which are not recommended. Whole blood intended for platelet separation must be maintained at +20 to +24°C prior to processing, as lower temperatures can impair platelet function and separation efficiency. Platelets should be prepared within 8 hours of blood collection and stored at 20-24°C with continuous agitation to prevent aggregation, which could compromise their viability.
Due to the room temperature storage, there is a risk of bacterial contamination; hence, the storage area should consistently remain below 24°C. During transport, platelets should be kept in a blood transport box that maintains a temperature range of 20-24°C. Platelets must not be refrigerated and should be transfused as soon as possible.

What It Enables: Precise and Robust Temperature Control
Implementing PCM-based temperature-controlled packaging in sample transportation could transform healthcare diagnostics. Reliable temperature control ensures accurate test results, reducing stress for patients and their families. PCM-based products like the Prongo® bag and Celsure® from Pluss demonstrate the efficacy of PCM-based solutions in real-world conditions.
Effective sample transportation is paramount in healthcare diagnostics. Government-regulated guidelines are essential to ensure laboratories adhere to proper procedures, thereby ensuring safety and reliability in diagnostics.

</excerpt>

Active physiotherapy is a modern and upgraded approach that engages patients in their own recovery through prescribed, targeted therapeutic exercises. Dr Apoorva Shrivastava, CEO & Founder, Resolve360 shares her insights on active physiotherapy, misconceptions about online physiotherapy, and rise in lifestyle-related conditions affecting neuromuscular and musculoskeletal health issues.

Q. Could you explain the concept of active physiotherapy and how it differs from traditional methods?
A. Active physiotherapy is a modern and upgraded approach that engages patients in their own recovery through prescribed, targeted therapeutic exercises. Unlike traditional methods that often rely on passive treatments or machines, active physiotherapy empowers patients to perform specific movements under expert guidance. This approach creates a brain-body connection crucial for long-term healing and prevents recurrence.

Q. What common misconceptions exist about online physiotherapy, and how do you counter them?
A. Common misconceptions include the belief that online physiotherapy lacks personal touch or effectiveness without hands-on treatment. In reality, online sessions often provide more focused, one-on-one interaction with needed specialization of the therapist and clinical excellence. While manual therapy has its place, most conditions respond exceptionally well to guided, active exercises. Another misconception is that online physiotherapy cannot address pain effectively. However, unlike machines that suppress pain temporarily, our approach targets the root cause through precise prescription and execution of active exercises, ensuring long-term relief and recovery. It’s essential to focus on the approach rather than the mode of delivery. The success of treatment lies in the methodology and personalized care, not just the physical presence.

Q. How does root cause analysis improve the effectiveness of online physiotherapy treatments?
A. Root cause analysis in online physiotherapy allows us to identify the underlying factors contributing to a patient’s condition. By addressing these root causes rather than just symptoms, we can develop more effective, long-lasting treatment plans. This approach is essential for treating conditions such as neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders, ensuring correct treatment and preventing recurrence. Unlike treatments that rely on machines and medications for temporary relief, our focus is on active exercises which promotes sustainable recovery without the risk of disorder progression or recurrence.

Q. In what ways does brain-body collaborative treatment enhance patient outcomes?
A. Brain-body collaborative treatment enhances outcomes by creating new neural pathways. When patients actively engage in their therapeutic exercises, they’re not just moving their bodies; they’re training their brains to enhance the healing process. This leads to more sustainable results and better long-term management of conditions.

Q. How do lifestyle-related conditions affect neuromuscular and musculoskeletal health, and how does online physiotherapy address these issues?
A. Lifestyle-related conditions often result in muscle imbalances, postural issues, and chronic pain. Online physiotherapy addresses these by providing personalized therapeutic exercise programs and lifestyle modifications. We can guide patients through corrective therapeutic exercises and educate them on proper ergonomics and movement patterns, all tailored to their specific lifestyle needs.

</excerpt>

A 63-year-old man faced a shocking ordeal when he sneezed and coughed simultaneously while sitting at his dinner table, causing his colon to protrude from his body. This incident occurred shortly after he had undergone abdominal surgery. The man experienced a sharp pain and upon lifting his shirt, discovered several inches of his colon sticking out of a surgical wound.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene found a significant amount of bowel protruding through a three-inch incision. Fortunately, there was minimal blood loss, and the exposed organ was undamaged. Medical professionals were able to reposition his bowel back into his abdomen after transporting him to the hospital.

To prevent the wound from reopening, surgeons performed internal and external stitches, including figure-of-eight stitches, which are considered highly advanced and strong. The patient remained in the hospital for six days and recovered without any complications.

The man had previously battled prostate cancer, and the recent surgery aimed to address complications from prior procedures, including bladder removal. His stitches were removed by doctors on the morning of the incident. Following this, he and his spouse decided to celebrate his recovery with breakfast at a diner.

The American Journal of Medical Case Reports noted that while wound dehiscence is a known post-operative complication, bowel evisceration through the abdominal wall after cystectomy is rarely reported.

It frequently advances silently until later stages, so being proactive is necessary. You can use the information in this page to identify the early indicators of lung cancer, comprehend origin plus latest treatment options, and get a peek of the bright future of lung cancer research.

Deconstructing Lung Cancer
When aberrant lung cells usually from lung alveoli ( type 1 and type 2 pneumocytes) undergoing uncontrolled doubling; our lungs, which are in charge of the exchange of oxygen necessary for life, can turn into battlefields. These cancerous cells can spread to other organs and impair lung function by creating tumors and fluid around lung. Although smoking tobacco is still the leading cause as tobacco contains 4000 chemicals out of which 70 causes cancer. Also the nonsmokers who are exposed to severe air pollution, second hand smoke, or occupational risks like asbestos exposure are also at increased risk of lung cancer.
Don’t Wait for Symptoms to take Over rather adopt safe practices.
See your doctor right away if you smoke, have a history of being exposed to risk factors, or suffer any body symptoms like weight loss , nagging cough, bloody sputum etc.
Early Detection: The Battle’s Lifeline
A key component of the fight against lung cancer is early detection. Low-dose CT scans of thorax have become important screening tools for high-risk people ( heavy smokers more then 30 pack years), providing a window of opportunity for early intervention.

Warning signs
One major issue with lung cancer in its early stages is that it is silent. Still, there are warning indications that need to be addressed right once. A chronic cough that becomes worse with time and especially if it comes with blood should be taken seriously. It’s important to pay attention to symptoms such as shortness of breath, unexplained exhaustion, and chest pain or tightness that persist. Changes in voice (hoarseness) and frequent respiratory infections, including pneumonia, weight loss; warrant a doctor’s visit.

</excerpt>

In today’s fast-paced world, convenience often takes precedence over health when it comes to food choices. Ultra-processed foods (UPF), characterized by their extensive processing and synthetic additives, have become staples in many diets. However, emerging research sheds light on the alarming connection between UPF consumption and an increased risk of death, particularly from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other related conditions.
Recent studies have provided compelling evidence of the detrimental effects of UPF on mortality rates, especially among high-risk individuals such as those with prior CVD or diabetes. A mere 5% increase in the proportion of UPF in the diet has been associated with elevated all-cause and CVD mortality rates over an 8.2-year follow-up period. Similarly, findings from the Framingham Offspring cohort revealed that each additional daily serving of UPF correlated with a higher risk of CVD incidence and mortality.

So, what exactly makes UPF so harmful? Primarily, these foods are nutrient-poor yet high in saturated fats (SFA), added sugars, dietary cholesterol, and energy density. This combination contributes to an overall lower nutritional quality, which is closely linked to the observed detrimental health effects. However, the issues don’t stop at poor nutritional content.
Ultra-processed foods are major sources of cosmetic additives like glutamates, emulsifiers, and sulphites, along with neoformed compounds such as acrylamide that arise during food processing, especially heat treatments. These substances have been implicated in disease promotion, suggesting that the very process of manufacturing these foods can lead to adverse health outcomes.

Some research has identified altered renal function as a potential biological mechanism through which UPF consumption exacerbates health risks. Among heavy UPF consumers, higher concentrations of cystatin C—an indicator of renal function—were observed compared to those with lower UPF consumption. This suggests that kidney health could be adversely affected by a diet high in UPF, contributing to the overall increase in mortality rates.

The findings underscore an urgent need for public health strategies to discourage UPF consumption and promote healthier, less processed dietary options. Educating the public about the risks associated with these convenient food choices is crucial. Communities should be encouraged to opt for whole and minimally processed foods, which not only provide better nutrition but also pose fewer health risks.

In conclusion, while ultra-processed foods may offer convenience and sensory appeal, the long-term health costs are too significant to ignore. By choosing healthier alternatives and minimizing UPF intake, we can protect our health, reducing our risk of chronic diseases and premature death. Let this be a call to action to rethink our food choices and opt for a diet that supports a long and healthy life.

</excerpt>

The Delhi High Court in the case Court On Its Own Motion v. Union Of India And Ors observed that the medical infrastructure in the national capital is inadequate and the number of hospital beds are insufficient.
The Division bench comprising of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna in its orders on December 13, 2023 stated that the demand is far in excess of the supply.

The court in the case observed and has directed the Delhi Government for filing the status report which indicates as to how it plans to ensure that the medical infrastructure keeps pace with the city’s population.
In the present case, the bench was dealing with the suo motu Public Interest Litigation, PIL initiated in 2017 concerning the issue of availability of ICU beds and ventilator facility in the government hospitals here.

The counsel, Amicus Curiae, Advocate Ashok Aggarwal, handed over a newspaper report titled, turned away by three hospitals fourteen-year-old cancer patient dies which is being published by Hindustan Times on December 07.
The court stated that the report was in reference to a 14-year-old girl who succumbed to blood cancer at AIIMS on December 05. Thus, as per the report, it has been alleged by the minor family that three government hospitals in Delhi refused treatment citing lack of medicines, beds, or equipment.

The court in the case observed that it is apparent that medical infrastructure in the city of Delhi is inadequate and the number of hospital beds are insufficient and the demand is far in excess of the supply. Thus, the said report is taken on record.
The court while considering the facts and circumstances of the case observed and has directed that the hospitals managed by the Central Government to operate a Control Room for providing information about the availability of beds with ventilator facilities, by notifying the phone numbers of Control Room through public notice in the print media and web portal. Accordingly, the court listed the matter for further consideration on January 29, 2024.

</excerpt>

We are all plugged in all the time, pushing our senses to the limit, in an effort to survive in a demanding, stressful, and ever-changing world. Perhaps the most important of our sensory capabilities, listening helps orient us to the environment and serves as a means of communication between individuals. Listening happens at home, during the commute, and at the workplace for recreational or occupational reasons.

Occupational & Recreational Hearing Loss
In occupations such as gardening or carpentry, individuals are exposed to sounds around 85 dB. Exposure of a mere two hours to such volume without protection for one’s ears can cause hearing damage. Recreational listening is believed to be safe. But personal listening devices are tuned to reach volumes of 105 to 110 dB. What’s concerning is that it takes as little as five minutes at such a volume to suffer hearing damage.

Intervention for Hearing Loss
The type of intervention depends on the underlying cause of the hearing loss. If the cause is earwax, then its removal may restore the hearing to normal. To do so, a doctor may use a suction tube, dissolve the wax using a liquid, or use an instrument. In the case of an ear infection, the suggested course of action may be surgery. If there is irreversible hearing loss, especially from damage to the inner ear, then the doctor resorts to the use of hearing aids and cochlear implants.
There are both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription-style hearing aids. OTC hearing aids can be bought directly from medical stores without consulting an audiologist or a doctor. These are suitable for mild hearing loss. For moderate to severe hearing loss, prescription-style hearing aids are available, which are pre-programmed for the degree of hearing loss a person has. Hearing aids also come in various styles such as behind-the-ear, in-the-ear and canal.

The style of hearing aid is picked by the ENT specialist after taking into account the occupation, extent of hearing loss, and age of the patient.

Medical faculty members from 13 medical schools, including Government Gandhi Medical College, went on strike in opposition to the state government’s plan to transfer management of medical colleges to administrative authorities in Bhopal.

State President of the Medical Teacher Doctors Association, Dr. Sunil Agarwal, said, “The administrative officials do not understand the profession of doctors. So why will the administrative officers take the decisions related to the medical college? If arrangements have to be made, then only a doctor should be appointed.”

The government will be accountable if the patients are in difficulty. Additionally, Dr. Agrawal warned, emergency services will be halted if the plan is approved by the cabinet.

The state government will forward a proposal at today’s cabinet meeting that would give administrative officers control over all aspects of the operations at medical institutions. The doctors opposed the proposal as a result.

The medical educators have also received the backing of the junior doctors. The protesters issued a warning that the emergency services would also be shut down if the proposal was approved by the cabinet.

The records submitted by the hospital about the health state of Gautam Navlakha, the defendant in the Bhima Koregaon case, have been made available for inspection by the parties by the Supreme Court.
The petition was set for hearing on November 9 by a panel of Justices KM Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that Navlakha is receiving treatment at Mumbai’s Jaslok hospital. The panel ruled that parties have the right to view the hospital’s medical reports since they have filed them.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had given the Superintendent of the Maharashtra prison Taloja permission to transfer the imprisoned activist Navlakha to the Jaslok hospital in Mumbai for a medical examination and treatment.

It stated that a prisoner’s right to medical care is a fundamental one.
The Supreme Court was considering Navlakha’s request that he be given home arrest rather than judicial detention in Taloja jail.
The bench had been informed by Navlakha, 70, that he has colon cancer and needs a colonoscopy as well as testing for skin sensitivities and dental problems.

Navlakaha’s request for shifting to house arrest and for a medical checkup was opposed by National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Navlakha filed a petition with the Supreme Court to overturn the Bombay High Court’s decision of April 26 to deny his request for house arrest due to concerns about inadequate medical care and other basic amenities in the Taloja jail outside of Mumbai, where he is now being held.
The Taloja prison’s lack of essential medical care and amenities, according to Navlakha, was “ill-founded,” according to the High Court.
He had petitioned the High Court, claiming that the Taloja jail had subpar amenities, was overcrowded and had caused his health to worsen while he was a prisoner there.
One of the many civil rights advocates in the Bhima Koregaon case, Navlakha, has been charged under the strict guidelines of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

When you hear the word medical ailment, typhoid, jaundice, cancer, diabetes, etc come to your mind but there are certain bizarre medical conditions that will leave you astounded. Here are five queer disorders entailed.

Alice in Wonderland syndrome

Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a neurological illness that affects a person’s perception of size. This is named after Lewis Caroll’s beloved stories in which Alice experiences both growth and shrinkage. It is also known as Todd’s syndrome or lilliputian hallucination, and people suffering may experience changes in their sense of self-image or their perception of their surroundings, causing them to believe that certain body parts or external objects are larger or smaller than they actually are.

Stoneman syndrome

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), also known as “stone man syndrome,” is a hereditary disorder in which muscle and connective tissue regenerate as bone in response to injury, slowly building a second skeleton and immobilising the affected person. The first sign of stone man syndrome is frequently deformed big toes, which is then followed by joint stiffness, immobility, and breathing problems.

Alien hand syndrome

Alien hand syndrome (AHS) is a rare form of motor dysfunction that is characterised by uncontrollable but intentional activity in one hand. For instance, a person with the syndrome might begin by buttoning their shirt with one hand while unbuttoning it with the other hand without realising it. The “alien hand” may become aggressive in severe cases; some patients have even stated that their out-of-control hand tries to suffocate them. People with the illness have been known to strike and slap themselves on occasion. Aliens’ leg phenomenon, sometimes known as involuntary movements in one of the legs, can occasionally occur in AHS patients.

Walking Corpse Syndrome

Walking corpse syndrome, also known as Cotard’s syndrome or Cotard’s delusion, is a mental ailment in which a person thinks they are missing body parts or have lost their soul, or even, at times, died. It was first identified in 1882 by the Parisian physician Dr. Jules Cotard. People with the condition may abstain from eating and drinking because they think they don’t need to because they don’t exist, and they frequently go to cemeteries as part of their daily activities to get closer to death. They might also fail to maintain their physical and personal hygiene.

Sleep paralysis

You awaken in the middle of the night with the conviction that a villainous figure is waiting for you. You try to move, but your body simply won’t cooperate. Your attempts to yell are ineffective. The monster approaches. Although it may sound like a scene from a horror film, you are actually suffering from sleep paralysis. Since the beginning of time, perhaps even before, individuals have been affected by this dreadful and enigmatic sleep illness called parasomnia.
