Trump Fires Hundreds at Voice of America in Sweeping Media Purge

In a sweeping decision, the administration of President Donald Trump has fired hundreds of journalists from Voice of America (VOA). The move has effectively dismantled the historic, U.S.-funded international news agency.

On Friday, 639 employees were laid off. The list included reporters from multiple language services. Among them were Persian-language journalists who had only recently returned to duty due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

Reports say the Persian reporters had stepped out for a cigarette break. While they were outside, termination notices were issued. They were not allowed back into the building.

‘Historic Act of Self-Sabotage’, Say Critics of Trump Move

VOA’s chief national correspondent Steve Herman described the shutdown as a “historic act of self-sabotage.” Established during World War II to counter Nazi propaganda, VOA has long been a symbol of American democratic ideals and press freedom abroad, providing reliable news to countries with restricted media.

In a joint statement, three VOA journalists involved in a lawsuit to stop the dismantling said the firings “spell the death of 83 years of independent journalism that upholds US ideals of democracy and freedom around the world.”

Trump Appointee Defends Layoffs, Cites Bias and Bureaucracy

Kari Lake, appointed by Trump to lead the outlet, defended the decision, stating the agency was “riddled with dysfunction, bias and waste.” She added, “Today, we took decisive action to effectuate President Trump’s agenda to shrink the out-of-control federal bureaucracy.”

Since March, over 85% of the agency’s workforce approximately 1,400 employees have lost their jobs. Just 50 staff members remain across VOA, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, and its parent agency, the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).

Longstanding Tensions with Public Broadcasters

President Trump has repeatedly criticized VOA, claiming it reflects a partisan, left-leaning bias. Former VOA journalist Dan Robinson described the outlet as a “hubris-filled rogue operation.” The move aligns with Trump’s broader push against publicly funded media, as he has also urged Republicans to defund National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

Similarly, the jury in a Manhattan court found former President Donald Trump guilty of all charges last month, leading to implications for the US judicial system. However, the media’s handling of Hunter Biden’s conviction, particularly concerning his purchase and possession of a gun while battling drug addiction and falsifying government forms, has revealed complexities and contradictions in reporting, reflecting broader challenges within the US media landscape.

During the recent trial involving former President Trump, many liberal media outlets in the US conducted a simultaneous trial of their own. Upon Trump’s conviction on all 34 felony counts, these outlets displayed unreserved jubilation, amplifying Trump’s characteristic scorn for the verdict. Yet, they overlooked numerous biased aspects of the trial and its proceedings.

In contrast, these same media outlets are now endeavouring to portray Biden Jr. not as the privileged son of a powerful family living extravagantly beyond his means, but rather as an emblem of the average American facing adversity and addiction. However, the distinction lies in Biden’s access to familial support and resources, which were not effectively utilized to address his struggles.

Following the verdict, President Biden has consistently emphasized his commitment to upholding the rule of law, despite the formidable display of power by his influential family during the hearings in Wilmington. Preceding the trial, extensive efforts were made by the defendant’s family to obstruct proceedings through governmental channels and plea bargaining, employing tactics reminiscent of those seen in India. However, the intervention of a federal judge appointed by Trump in Delaware prevented these efforts. The defense has appealed the judge’s decision, arguing that the case infringes upon citizens’ Second Amendment rights, despite the irony of President Biden’s strict stance on gun control.

Despite overwhelming evidence against Hunter Biden, including testimony from his ex-wife, ex-lover (who was also his deceased brother’s widow), and other women, it’s evident why the Bidens attempted to suppress it. Now, media outlets are suggesting that the initial jury was evenly divided on the verdict, with unanimity only reached after deliberations the following day. Regarding Hunter Biden’s potential sentencing, various opinions from news outlets and experts imply that he does not warrant a jail term, let alone the maximum of 25 years provided by law, as his crime is deemed less severe and he is now reportedly “clean.” However, it’s crucial to note that Biden did lie to obtain a firearm in 2018 and possessed a gun while struggling with addiction, despite having ample familial and legal support to avoid such actions.

A former prosecutor in the US suggested that rather than facing trial, Hunter Biden should have been directed towards addiction treatment and counseling. This approach draws parallels to a recent incident in India where a minor driving a Porsche, involved in a fatal accident, was merely tasked with writing an essay on road safety and familiarizing themselves with traffic regulations. Both cases involve individuals from affluent backgrounds who possess the means to understand and adhere to the law. Despite being 48 years old at the time of his offense, Biden falsely filled out a form to purchase a handgun, demonstrating a lack of regard for legal obligations. Additionally, it was his partner who disposed of the firearm, not Biden himself.

On the same day his son was convicted for illegally possessing a firearm and lying to obtain it while addicted to drugs, an animated President Biden called for the ban of assault weapons and stricter purchase regulations at a gun safety meeting in Washington DC. Despite this, the question remains unanswered as to why Hunter felt the need for a gun. Some speculate that the media’s deliberate downplaying of facts could suggest a conspiracy, possibly to divert attention from more serious charges against Hunter. President Biden’s praise for the judicial system and portrayal of his son as being held accountable like any other American may be an attempt to assert that Hunter has fulfilled his societal obligation. However, if Hunter avoids a jail sentence while Trump faces one, many may perceive this as unjust.

Judge Maryellen Noreika has signaled her intention to deliver Hunter Biden’s sentence 120 days post-conviction, although a specific date has not been determined. Factors to be weighed include Biden’s status as a first-time offender, yet the maximum penalty stands at 25 years imprisonment and a $750,000 fine. Conversely, Judge Juan Merchan is slated to announce Trump’s sentencing on July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention, where he is anticipated to be chosen as the party’s candidate for the election.

Hunter Biden’s legal troubles continue as he faces a tax evasion charge in California scheduled for September. The charges against him include six misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns and pay taxes, one felony count of tax evasion, and two felony counts of filing false returns. These allegations portray him as a wealthy heir living extravagantly while neglecting his tax obligations, contrasting sharply with the responsibilities borne by ordinary citizens. Despite the charges, Biden Jr. has pleaded not guilty.

It is claimed that between 2016 and 2019, Hunter allegedly devised a scheme to evade paying $1.4 million in income tax. Prosecutors assert that during this time, he earned over $7 million and spent lavishly on “drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes”.

IB ministry issues advisory for media personnel involved in ground reporting

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has on Thursday issued a warning to all such channels, expressing serious concerns about the safety and security of the various reporters, cameramen, and other personnel of the various media organisations, particularly the private TV channels covering the cyclone “Biparjoy.”

The Ministry has issued a warning that covering the tragedy from the ground up could seriously jeopardise the safety and security of the reporters, cameramen, and other employees used by the private satellite TV networks. Additionally, the ministry has expressed worry that such on-the-ground reporting could endanger the lives of the numerous soldiers who have been deployed. The Ministry has strongly urged media outlets to take all precaution and show due diligence when deploying their staff in the impacted areas. Additionally, it has been highly advised that the company never make decisions on the deployment of such employees in a way that could jeopardise the safety and security of the organisation.

4 students suspended for ‘burqa’ dance in Karnataka

Karnataka college’s four students have been suspended for dancing in their ‘burqa’.

The action is taken by the Mangaluru college administration after a video of their performance at a college event went viral on social media.

Meanwhile, in the video four students have seen dancing and wearing long, loose garments covering them from head to toe called a burqa.

Moreover, engineering college authorities issued a media statement about the action taken by the institute authorities.

Taking to Twitter St Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru, tweeted, “The video clip being circulated in social media has captured a part of the dance by students of the Muslim community itself who barged on stage during the informal part of students association inaugural.”

“It was not part of the approved program and the students involved have been suspended pending an enquiry. The college does not support or condone any activities that could harm the harmony between communities and everyone (sic), the college authority said.

You forward the details and information. But I want to ask those who are trying to block the coverage. Will you not show such a massive programme? Media is the fourth pillar of the state. This just is based on Rahul Gandhi’s positive thoughts. India won’t forgive you.”

“Is it not our duty?” he further asked, praising Rahul Gandhi as he said that he “is following the path of truth”. He also mentioned activist Medha Patkar’s participation in the foot march amid Gujarat elections, which had prompted attack from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On Sunday evening, the Bharat Jodo Yatra arrived in Gujarat after travelling more than 2,500 kilometres through seven states. According to Jairam Ramesh of the Congress, the remaining distance of the foot march—approximately 1,200 km—will be covered during the next weeks.

Following the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the party intends to conduct a “Hath se Hath Jodo” foot march beginning on January 26 under Gandhi’s direction. The party has emphasised that it will strengthen connections with young people.

“While the speed with which the information is transmitted is important, accuracy is even more important, and should be primary in the minds of communicators,” the minister said while speaking at the opening ceremony of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General Assembly-2022. “With the spread of social media, fake news has also proliferated,” the minister added.

He claimed that in order to refute unfounded assertions and inform the public of the truth, the government had established a “Fact Check” unit under the Press Information Bureau of the Government of India.

The Minister emphasised that the ultimate guiding principle for responsible media organisations should be upholding public trust. He also emphasised how important the media’s role is in times of crisis since it directly affects saving lives, and he added that the media plays a crucial role in national disaster management plans.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Minister Anurag Thakur also praised the media for helping those who were stranded at home and connecting them to the outside world.

“Indian media in general ensured that COVID-19 awareness messages, important government guidelines, and free online consultations with doctors reached everyone in every nook and corner of the country,” he said.

Thakur also invited the media to become a partner in governance and used the podium to reiterate the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that “Media should act as a link between government and people and provide continuous feedback, at both the national and regional level”.
“India has bilateral agreements in the areas of content exchange, co-production, capacity building, etc. with about 40 countries, a number of them are fellow ABU countries such as Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Fiji, the Maldives, Nepal, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam,” he said.
“We have also partnered with Australia in the field of broadcasting in March 2022 for programme sharing. The broadcasters of the two countries are also exploring opportunities in co-production and joint broadcasting of programmes spanning multiple genres,” he added.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the 59th Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General Assembly and Associated Meetings 2022 Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said, the media must report responsibly during terrorist attacks.

“Media must ensure that live reporting in case of a terrorist attack shouldn’t provide clues to attackers and facilitate their ill motives,” Thakur said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, “Serving The People-Media’s Role In The Time Of Crisis” is the theme of the 59th Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General Assembly and Associated Meetings 2022.

Moreover, Union Minister Thakur also praised the media for connecting people and the outside world during the time of the COVID lockdown.

“The COVID crisis has been a time for testing for all of us across the globe. Due to lockdowns, it was the media that connected people with the outside world. In such situations, providing the right and timely information becomes the media’s responsibility,” Union Minister Anurag Thakur said.

During the time of COVID-19 media played a vital role and spread awareness messages and important guidelines to people on time through which people were made aware of COVID said Union Minister Thakur.

“Indian broadcasters and Indian media, in general, ensured that #COVID19 awareness messages, important govt guidelines, and free online consultations were provided. Whereas doctors reached everyone, in every nook and corner of this country,” Thakur said.
