Fraudulent messages aimed at foreign officials raise cybersecurity concerns amid growing threats from advanced deepfake technology.
</excerpt>

US State Department issued a global warning to its diplomats after unknown people tried to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio with AI-generated messages, two senior officials and a diplomatic cable sent last week reported. The notice, first reported by The Washington Post, said at least three foreign ministers, a US senator, and a state governor were spoofed by text messages, the encrypted messaging service Signal, and voicemail.

The July 3 cable, also seen by the Associated Press, didn’t identify the targets of the fraudulent contact. But it underlined the gravity of the situation and reported that the department is pursuing active investigations. “The department takes seriously its obligation to protect its information,” the cable stated, adding that action is being taken to bolster cybersecurity defenses.

The officials described the attempts at impersonation as amateurish and ultimately unsuccessful. Nevertheless, in light of increasing numbers of AI-based disinformation and cyber intrusion attempts, the department instructed its own personnel and foreign contacts to be on guard.

“There is no immediate cyber threat to the department from this campaign,” the cable stated, “but information passed to a third party could be put at risk if targeted individuals are breached.”

This is the second case of AI-facilitated impersonation to be directed against high-ranking members of the Trump administration. Last month, a number of elected officials and business leaders received emails from an imposter claiming to be White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, with her voice possibly having been cloned by artificial intelligence, reports say.

The FBI earlier had alerted the public to such tactics through a warning, referring to constant impersonation schemes by senior US officials through text and voice messages generated by AI.

State Department officials declined comment further, citing security considerations and the fact that the investigation was ongoing.

Grossi warns nuclear crisis may be close without diplomacy.
</excerpt>

Marco Rubio has condemned Iran’s demand to arrest International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi, calling the threat “unacceptable” and warning of serious consequences. As tensions soar following Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Rubio urged Iran to ensure the safety of IAEA officials.

His statement reinforces U.S. support for the IAEA’s work and highlights growing global concerns over Iran’s nuclear escalation.

Rubio Backs Inspector Safety

Marco Rubio issued a strongly worded post on X, declaring, “We support the IAEA’s critical verification and monitoring efforts in Iran and commend the Director General and the IAEA for their dedication and professionalism. We call on Iran to provide for the safety and security of IAEA personnel.” Iranian lawmakers recently demanded the arrest and execution of Grossi, prompting international outrage.

Iran’s parliament passed a bill that cuts off cooperation with the IAEA unless foreign powers guarantee protection for its nuclear facilities. Israeli and U.S. forces had struck Iranian nuclear sites just days earlier. Rubio reinforced the Biden administration’s push to preserve nuclear oversight and prevent further conflict.

Marco Rubio Warns of Nuclear Risks

Grossi, head of the IAEA, has already warned that Iran stands “not far” from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. As a result, he urged diplomats to engage immediately, stressing the need for a solution to prevent regional destabilisation. Meanwhile, Wired magazine reported that U.S. and Iranian representatives plan to hold indirect talks next week, even as Iran pushes its uranium enrichment closer to weapons-grade levels.

In this context, Rubio’s statement highlights U.S. concerns about nuclear safety and the need to protect international inspectors. Observers now view Iran’s demand to arrest Grossi not only as a political threat but also as a dangerous shift that could dismantle existing nuclear safeguards. Therefore, Rubio’s push for global condemnation raises the stakes of the growing standoff.

</excerpt>

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will sign on Friday in Washington a US-facilitated peace deal that promises to bring an end to decades of violent conflict displacing hundreds of thousands in the resource-rich area.

The pact is a significant development in talks negotiated by US President Donald Trump’s administration. The accord is designed to stop fighting and lay the ground for significant Western investment in a richly mineralic region that is home to cobalt, tantalum, copper, and lithium.

Under the US State Department, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host the Rwandan and DRC foreign ministers to a formal signing ceremony. A White House meeting with President Trump will precede it. Another deal aimed at regional economic integration is also set to be inked in a different White House ceremony by the heads of state, subject to further developments in parallel Doha negotiations between the DRC government and the M23 rebel movement.

The peace agreement is said to involve promises of respecting sovereignty over territory, cessation of hostilities, and the disarmament and conditional integration of rebel forces. It also puts in place a verification process for the Rwandan forces’ withdrawal within three months as per a previous Angola-brokered proposal.

Under the deal, Congolese operations against Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) are also to be completed within that period. The FDLR consists of leftover militia who were behind Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.

Diplomatic officials indicate that Congo recently suspended its call for an immediate Rwandan withdrawal, relaxing the principal source of tension. Rwanda, which has deployed thousands of soldiers into eastern Congo, denies backing M23 rebels, insisting its military deployment is a reaction to Congo-based Hutu militia threats.

The peace agreement is viewed as a key milestone toward regional stability and long-term economic growth.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will receive foreign ministers from India, Australia, and Japan on July 1, with a focus on bolstering the Quad alliance and reaffirming a shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific, the State Department announced Thursday.

This summit comes on the heels of Rubio’s first diplomatic foray in January, in which he hosted the China-centric Quadrilateral Security Dialogue one day after President Donald Trump began his second term. “This summit builds on that momentum to advance a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific,” said Deputy State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott. “This is what American leadership looks like: strength, peace, and prosperity.”

In the talks in January, Quad ministers reiterated their resolve for closer collaboration and committed themselves to meet at regular intervals as a lead-up to a pending leaders’ summit in India this year.

The four member states Australia, India, Japan, and the United States all have strategic interests in pushing back against China’s growing power. The January gathering was interpreted by analysts as an early indicator that pushback against Beijing is still a top priority for Trump’s administration. But the administration’s attention has waned in the past several months with the continuation of Middle Eastern conflicts and persistent trouble in ending the war in Ukraine. Trump’s hawkish tariff stance has also generated trade tensions even within allied Quad countries.

Additional tension this week arose when the Australian and Japanese prime ministers, and other Indo-Pacific allies, chose not to participate in the NATO summit in Europe, casting doubt on unity within regional alliances. Question.

Japan cancelled its ministerial-level talks with US State and Defense departments annually, reported the Financial Times, after Washington urged Tokyo to sharply boost its defense spending. The demand is said to have been made by Pentagon staffer Elbridge Colby, whose own recent assessment of Australia’s nuclear submarine program also has caused tensions with Canberra.

In spite of such tensions, the forthcoming Quad summit seeks to reiterate mutual commitment to regional stability and cooperation.

He says another strike is likely if Iran rebuilds.
</excerpt>

United States President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy by stating that he will not hesitate to strike Iran again if the country rebuilds its nuclear infrastructure. Despite recent U.S. intelligence assessments showing that the airstrikes only delayed Iran’s nuclear program by a few months, Trump declared the sites “totally wiped out” and insisted Tehran would face further military action if it tried to resume its nuclear ambitions.

His bold stance, supported by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stands in stark contrast to cautious findings from American intelligence, raising alarms about potential escalations in the region.

The United States will attack again if Iran rebuilds its nuclear program.

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday during the NATO summit in The Hague.

“Obviously,” he said in response to the question from… pic.twitter.com/0Qmwa4tDkY

Trump Threatens Again

U.S. President Donald Trump did not hesitate when reporters asked if he would strike Iran again. “Sure,” he said during a press briefing at the NATO Summit in The Hague. His blunt response followed growing speculation over whether the U.S. had fully destroyed Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Secretary of State Marco Rubio supported Trump’s claim, stating that Iranian facilities “can’t be found on the map” after U.S. forces bombed them.

On June 22, the United States carried out a major air assault on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan sites. These facilities, previously linked to uranium enrichment, faced direct hits from precision bunker buster bombs. U.S. intelligence officials later assessed that the strikes delayed Iran’s nuclear capabilities by only a few months.

Trump outright rejected that assessment, responding to the reports by saying, “they really don’t know.” He also refuted claims that Iran relocated enriched uranium before the bombings. The president remained confident in the outcome and insisted that Tehran “won’t dare” attempt to rebuild.

Ceasefire and Fallout

While Trump celebrated what he called a decisive blow, the intelligence findings painted a more cautious picture. The conflict began when Israel launched a surprise air offensive on June 13, hitting Iranian sites and killing several high-ranking commanders. Iran retaliated with missile attacks targeting Israeli cities and U.S. bases in Qatar. Trump later confirmed that Iran had warned the U.S. before the strike, which prevented any casualties.

To end the 12-day conflict, Trump negotiated a ceasefire between the two nations. Though both Iran and Israel have agreed to honour the truce, Trump warned that any rebuilding efforts by Tehran would invite another round of airstrikes. He also criticised Israel for allegedly violating the early hours of the agreement.

Still, the White House remains firm in its message: Trump believes the mission succeeded, and he stands ready to respond again.

</excerpt>

Federal Judge James Boasberg has instructed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also serving as the acting archivist, to collect messages linked to the controversial Signal group chat scandal. He has ordered that the gathered content be handed over to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for review. According to Fox News, the messages involve senior officials from the Donald Trump administration and may be at risk of deletion.

Judge Cites Suit Filed by Watchdog After Journalist’s Accidental Access

The court was considering the suit filed by nonprofit government watchdog American Oversight. Journalist Jeffrey Goldberg claimed he was accidentally added to a Signal chat where Trump officials discussed striking the Yemen-based Houthis, according to Law & Crime.

The Atlantic reported that the chat included plans for imminent airstrikes on Houthi targets, Fox News confirmed.

Judge Criticizes Trump Officials for Failing Federal Record Duties

The judge said court records show five Trump-era officials failed to meet duties under the Federal Records Act. Boasberg, seen as a judicial critic of Trump due to past immigration rulings, made the observation.

He added that American Oversight had a strong case. The officials used an encrypted messaging app for official work and even enabled auto-delete on their messages.

Lawsuit Seeks Policy Revision and DOJ Involvement

The lawsuit requested a preliminary injunction to compel the Trump administration to revise the record-keeping policies. It aimed at preserving all the messages while the case was being heard, apart from directing Rubio to ask Attorney General Pam Bondi to procure the deleted messages.

FAQs About the Case

1. Who appointed US District Judge James Boasberg?

James Boasberg was appointed by former US President Barack Obama.

2.How did the Donald Trump administration respond to the matter?

The Trump administration has denied any wrongdoing in the matter, insisting that the communication was not “classified,” as per Fox News report.

3.Who was involved in the Signal incident?

It included Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard among others.

US Imposes Visa Bans On Central American Officials Targets Cuba’s Doctor Diplomacy

<excerpt>Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced visa restrictions targeting unnamed Central American officials linked to Cuba’s global healthcare programs, which Washington criticizes for forced labor and enriching the Cuban regime.
</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday imposed visa restrictions on unnamed Central American government officials with connections to Cuban medical mission programs that are accused of forced labor and exploitation of workers.

Rubio refused to name countries or officials targeted but highlighted the action as part of a larger effort to hold responsible those that enable abusive labor practices. “These actions encourage accountability for individuals who enable and tolerate these exploitative practices,” he said.

The visa restrictions are tied to Cuba’s long-running practice of exporting doctors and other health professionals overseas, which Rubio and American officials say amounts to coercion and denies Cuban citizens much-needed medical care. “The Cuban labor export program exploits the participants, lines the pockets of the corrupt Cuban regime, and denies average Cubans access to much-needed medical care that they desperately require in their own country,” Rubio added.

The Cuban government has repeatedly rejected such allegations, and its foreign ministry has yet to comment on the latest US move.

Last February, Rubio broadened visa prohibitions to cover Cuban officials suspected of engaging in the program, now a major source of income for the economically troubled island nation.

Since the 1959 revolution in Cuba, the nation has sent medical brigades all around the world, helping out in areas of conflict and responding to illnesses like cholera and Ebola. But in more recent years, the missions have become increasingly commercialized and revenue-driven deals with foreign governments, raising the ire of human rights groups and American policymakers.

Rubio, a Cuban-American and stalwart opponent of the Havana regime, has long been an opponent of normalizing US-Cuba ties. As leader, Washington rolled back efforts by the Biden administration to relax sanctions and enabled tougher measures on financial transactions with the island.

The recent visa moves confirm Rubio’s desire to take a hardline stance against Cuba and those who cooperate with its labor export program.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that the United States will impose more sanctions on Russia if Moscow does not submit a formal ceasefire proposal. He made this statement during a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This report comes from Anadolu Agency.

Russia Must Act to Prove It Wants Peace

To begin with, Rubio said that Russia must share its terms for a possible ceasefire in the war with Ukraine. He explained that delays would reveal Russia’s real intentions.
“It’s our understanding that the Russians are going to write up terms for what they would require in order to reach a ceasefire that then would allow broader negotiations,” Rubio told the committee.
He added, “We await those terms, and then I’ll have a much better understanding about Mr. Putin’s calculation once we see what those terms look like.”

Sanctions Are Likely If Russia Keeps Fighting

Moreover, Rubio made it clear that the US will act if Russia refuses to move toward peace.
“If it is clear that the Russians are not interested in a peace deal and they just want to keep fighting a war, it may very well come to that point,” he said, as quoted by Anadolu Agency.

Trump Wants to Keep Diplomacy Alive

However, Rubio also explained that President Donald Trump does not want to threaten Russia just yet. According to him, Trump fears that early threats could stop the talks.
“The president believes that right now, if you start threatening sanctions, the Russians will stop talking,” Rubio said.

Furthermore, Rubio stressed that Trump wants to end the war. He wants both Russia and Ukraine to stay engaged in peaceful talks. Rubio said Trump is “very committed” to guiding both sides toward a peaceful solution.

Talks May Begin Soon With Vatican’s Help

Earlier, on Monday, Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine agreed to start peace talks immediately. This came after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin for two hours.

In addition, Trump said that the Vatican may host the talks. Newly elected Pope Leo XIV has offered to support the peace process. Notably, the Pope made a similar offer on May 16 after earlier ceasefire talks in Istanbul failed. However, both countries had agreed to exchange prisoners despite that failure.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio faced intense scrutiny on Tuesday during his first testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, defending the Trump administration’s foreign policy approach and budget cuts amid bipartisan criticism.

Despite criticism that the administration is pulling back from the international scene, Rubio asserted that the United States is not receding from global affairs. “I just visited 18 countries in 18 weeks,” he informed lawmakers, refuting suggestions that foreign policy is being disassembled.

Rubio was taken to task on a variety of topics, including the administration’s crackdown on immigrants, its efforts to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the hot-button prioritization of white South African immigrants ahead of refugees from other areas. Senator Chris Van Hollen took Rubio to task for forsaking values he had once embraced and enabling Trump’s agenda and ignoring actual crises such as the genocide in Sudan.

In rebuttal, Rubio contended that foreign aid efforts had been inefficiently managed and that the suggested $28.5 billion budget would cut out inefficiency while keeping the US as a preeminent donor of humanitarian aid. He laid out proposals for a new $2.9 billion “America First Opportunity Fund” to update aid distribution.

On Russia, Rubio asserted that no significant concessions had been granted to Putin and stressed that sanctions were still imposed. He also warned of a looming collapse into civil war in Syria.

Rubio was confronted by protesters at the hearing, who shouted “Stop the genocide” before police took them away. Regarding Gaza, Rubio stated Israel’s recent opening of humanitarian aid access was a welcome move and refuted reports of refugee relocation negotiations with Libya.

The hearing was a combative debut for Rubio as the skepticism about the administration’s evolving global strategy and values grows.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir earlier on May 10, according to an official statement. During the call, Rubio emphasized the need for both India and Pakistan to take steps to ease tensions between them.

US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated, “Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir earlier today. He continued to urge both parties to find ways to de-escalate and offered US assistance in starting constructive talks in order to avoid future conflicts.”

This message from Washington reflects continued concern over rising tensions between the two South Asian countries. The United States has consistently called on both nations to exercise restraint and pursue peaceful dialogue.

Highlighting the importance of quick resolution, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Friday that Rubio remains in close contact with leaders from both sides. “The President (Donald Trump) wants it to de-escalate as early as possible. Rubio is trying to bring this conflict to an end,” Leavitt said during a press briefing.

The US has made it clear that it is ready to help mediate or support efforts that promote peace and avoid further escalation of hostilities in the region.

</excerpt>

Although New Delhi diplomatically dismissed US President Donald Trump’s invitation to mediate a dispute between India and Pakistan, the United States on Thursday appealed for “immediate de-escalation” and “direct dialogue” between the two bordering countries of South Asia.

Washington Leans Toward Islamabad’s Civilian Casualty Claims

The Trump Administration also seemed to have supported Islamabad’s assertion of civilians being killed in India’s offensive against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied areas, while New Delhi asserted that Operation Sindoor only targeted terrorists on both sides of the Line of Control and the undisputed portion of the border between the two countries.

Washington, D.C., also asked Islamabad to “take concrete steps to end any support for terrorist groups”.

US Secretary of State Speaks to Both Indian and Pakistani Leadership

Trump’s Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a call to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. He also called Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

“The secretary expressed sorrow for the reported loss of civilian lives in the current conflict. He reiterated his calls for Pakistan to take concrete steps to end any support for terrorist groups,” Tammy Bruce, the spokesperson of the US State Department, stated in a press release issued in Washington, D.C., after Rubio spoke to Sharif.

“The secretary reiterated his condolences for the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism,” Bruce said in another statement after Rubio called the external affairs minister Jaishankar in New Delhi.

During his phone call with Jaishankar, Rubio emphasised the need for “immediate de-escalation” between India and Pakistan.

He voiced US favor in direct talks between India and Pakistan and urged sustained efforts toward better communications, stated Bruce. He said the same.

The US secretary of state renewed his sympathies regarding the ghastly terrorist attack at Pahalgam and reiterated the Trump Administration’s commitment to cooperate with India in the battle against terrorism.

“Spoke with US @SecRubio this evening. Deeply appreciate the US commitment to work with India in the fight against terrorism. Underlined India’s targeted and measured response to cross-border terrorism. Will firmly counter any attempts at escalation,” Jaishankar posted on X.

India Rejects US Mediation, Recalls Previous Stance

New Delhi previously thanked Trump but respectfully declined his offer to assist in easing tensions with Pakistan. New Delhi instead called on the Trump Administration in Washington, D.C., to request Islamabad to cease supporting terrorist groups.

“We are truly, truly thankful to President Trump. I think the best would be if our partners in the US would tell the Pakistanis to stop supporting these terrorists,” Vinay Mohan Kwatra, New Delhi’s envoy to Washington, D.C., told Fox News. He made the comment after Trump offered to help de-escalate tension between India and Pakistan.

During Trump’s first tenure in the Oval Office, New Delhi had rejected his offer to mediate between India and China. He had made the offer after the violent face-off between the soldiers of the Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army at Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020.

India carried out missile strikes early on Wednesday, targeting the terrorist camps in Pakistan as well as in parts of India’s Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir illegally occupied by Pakistan. The ‘Operation Sindoor’ was launched a fortnight after 26 people were killed by a gang of Pakistani and Pakistan-trained terrorists at Baisaran near Pahalgam in J&K on April 22.

Trump Calls for Restraint After India’s Missile Strikes

“This operation that we carried out was aimed at bringing accountability and justice to those subhuman monsters, those worst of the worst, who carried out these terrible attacks on the 22nd of April,” Kwatra told the TV channel.

As India’s missile strikes on terrorist camps in areas under the control of Pakistan heightened tensions between the two South Asian nations, the Trump Administration urged New Delhi and Washington, D.C., to avoid escalation.

“It is so terrible. I get along with both. I know both very well. I want to see them work it out; I want to see them stop. Hopefully, they can stop now. They have done tit for tat,” Trump said, adding that the US had good relationships with both India and Pakistan.

India Upholds Bilateral Resolution Policy, Islamabad Suspends Treaties

New Delhi in the past spurned any move by any foreign leader or agency or any international agency to intervene between India and Pakistan.

New Delhi asserts that the 1972 Simla Agreement between India and Pakistan and the 1999 Lahore Declaration had left no room for the UN or any other third party to have any role in solving the “outstanding issues” between the two South Asian neighbours.

Islamabad has, however, recently suspended the Simla Agreement and all other bilateral treaties between India and Pakistan as a retaliatory step after New Delhi suspended the Indus Water Treaty, 1960, in retaliation against the terrorist attack.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged the de-escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan in immediate phone talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The telephonic exchanges come at a time when both countries are witnessing increased conflict, with Pakistan conducting missile and drone attacks on several Indian cities including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the negotiations, underscoring Rubio’s firm focus on lessening hostilities. The Secretary conveyed condolences over the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that resulted in several deaths, and reiterated the US’s resolve to support India in its battle against terrorism.

The dialogue mirrors the global anxiety regarding the surging border violence, with world powers appealing to both nations to value peace and diplomacy above further conflict.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Germany’s Foreign Ministry are in a heated exchange. Rubio accused Germany of behaving like a dictatorship after it labeled the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as an “extremist” group. In response, Germany defended its decision as a necessary step to protect democracy.

Germany Declares AfD an Extremist Party

On Friday, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, BfV, officially classified the AfD as extremist. According to a 1,100-page report, the party promotes racist and anti-Muslim ideas.

The agency stated, “Central to our assessment is the ethnically and ancestrally defined concept of the people that shapes the AfD, which devalues entire segments of the population in Germany and violates their human dignity.”

Notably, this decision came just months after AfD finished second in Germany’s federal elections in February.

Rubio Strongly Opposes the Move

Soon after the BfV announcement, Rubio criticized the decision. He posted on X, “Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That’s not democracy — it’s tyranny in disguise.”

Moreover, he claimed that the AfD is not the real threat. Instead, he blamed immigration policies. He wrote, “The establishment’s deadly open border immigration policies that the AfD opposes” are the true extremists. He urged, “Germany should reverse course.”

Germany Quickly Responds

Shortly after Rubio’s post, Germany’s Foreign Office responded directly on X. It stood by the extremist label and said the process followed democratic principles.

“This is democracy. This decision is the result of a thorough and independent investigation to protect our Constitution and the rule of law. It is independent courts that will have the final say. We have learnt from our history that rightwing extremism needs to be stopped.”

Vice President JD Vance Echoes Rubio

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance supported Rubio’s statement. He also defended the AfD’s popularity and its support in East Germany.

On X, he wrote, “The AfD is the most popular party in Germany, and by far the most representative of East Germany. Now the bureaucrats try to destroy it.”

Furthermore, he added, “The West tore down the Berlin Wall together. And it has been rebuilt — not by the Soviets or the Russians, but by the German establishment.”

The AfD is the most popular party in Germany, and by far the most representative of East Germany. Now the bureaucrats try to destroy it.

— JD Vance (@JDVance) May 2, 2025

BfV Lists Why AfD Is Dangerous

In its report, the BfV gave detailed reasons for classifying AfD as extremist. The agency said the party excludes people from society based on their origin. It argued that AfD promotes unfair treatment and discrimination.

“It aims to exclude certain population groups from equal participation in society, subject them to unconstitutional discrimination, and thus assign them a legally devalued status,” the BfV stated.

Additionally, the agency said the party does not treat Muslim-background Germans as equals. “Specifically, for example, the AfD does not consider German citizens with a migration history from predominantly Muslim countries to be equal members of the German people, as defined ethnically by the party.”

Moreover, the BfV accused AfD leaders of stirring fear and hate. “This is evident in the numerous xenophobic, anti-minority, anti-Islamic, and anti-Muslim statements continually made by leading party officials,” it said.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will call on his Indian and Pakistani counterparts not to escalate, his spokeswoman said Tuesday, as tensions are through the roof between the long-standing arch-rivals following a fatal attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.

“We are reaching out to both parties and telling, of course, them to not escalate the situation,” State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters.

Diplomatic Push by Marco Rubio

“The secretary expects to speak with the foreign ministers of Pakistan and India as early as today or tomorrow,” she said.

“He is encouraging other national leaders, other foreign ministers, to also reach out to the countries on this issue,” she said.

The United States, which is a close ally of India, had first expressed support following the April 22 attack when gunmen gunned down 26 men in the tourist center of Pahalgam.

India Holds Pakistan Responsible

The brutal assault in Pahalgam, which targeted civilians most of them tourists visiting the scenic Kashmir region has sparked outrage across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior security officials have vowed a strong response, raising fears of a military escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors. India has blamed the attack on foreign militants, with officials pointing to Pakistan-based groups, a claim Islamabad firmly denies.

Marco Rubio emphasizing on diplomacy follows comments by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the army would have “operational freedom” to counter the attack.

Global Concerns Over Escalation

India blames Pakistan for supporting the assault. Pakistan refuses the accusation but has long deplored Indian domination of partitioned, Muslim-ruled Kashmir.

The region of Kashmir has been a flashpoint for decades, with both India and Pakistan claiming it in full but controlling parts of it. This latest attack, one of the deadliest in recent years, threatens to undo recent diplomatic gains made between the two nations and reignites global concern over potential conflict.

</excerpt>

In a dramatic change of pace, the Trump administration is officially coming aboard with the UK and France to negotiate to advance a ceasefire in Ukraine. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff will fly to Paris to meet for the first time with British and French officials. The discussions represent Washington’s joining the European-led ‘coalition of the willing’, a team that is laboring to impose future peace and restore Ukraine’s defenses.

The latest chapter in these negotiations comes on the heels of Witkoff’s recent meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump’s advisors, who seek to weigh options for a ceasefire in the Black Sea and energy spheres. Yet Russia’s preconditions remain problematic.

Paris talks mark a first for Trump officials

Rubio and Witkoff will meet in Paris with British Foreign Minister David Lammy and other senior officials. Officials from the Trump administration are making their first appearance in the UK-France coalition negotiations on Ukraine.

Hopefully, Macron can talk some sense into these two bozos.

Witkoff and Rubio headed to ?? for talks on Ukraine, Iran and trade.https://t.co/BCicR9YtCP

— Fred Fella (@FredFellaIMO) April 16, 2025

British PM Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have led the effort. Their ambition is to develop a European-led force to secure peace in the future and to prevent Russia from further aggression. As of yet, only the UK and France have committed troops.

Witkoff to brief allies on Putin talks

Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, met recently with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. In Paris, he will report to UK and French officials on that conversation. That information will inform the coalition’s approach from here on out.

The US State Department has confirmed Rubio’s visit, saying he will seek to “advance President Trump’s goal to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and halt the bloodshed.” Marco Rubio will also discuss broader regional security interests.

Ceasefire proposals and Russia’s demands

Two ceasefire plans have emerged from recent diplomacy. One focuses on ending hostilities in the Black Sea, while the other targets attacks on energy infrastructure. Ukraine has accepted both. Russia, however, has tied its agreement to sweeping demands, including lifting sanctions on its agricultural sector.

Earlier this week, negotiations in Turkey went only partially well. Now, Paris is the focal point. If these negotiations do not make headway, chances of a short-term ceasefire are lost.

Wider strategy taking shape

The UK and France seem set on taking the lead, even if not with the full support of NATO. In bringing the US on board, they aim to convert symbolic support into actual influence. Washington’s involvement could add diplomatic clout, particularly following Witkoff’s unusual access to Putin.

But Russia’s toughened position still looms in the background. The West is now faced with a choice of whether to back down on sanctions or hold firm. Either course, the result of Thursday’s Paris negotiations will redraw the map of European security.

</excerpt>

Moscow has taken over Glavprodukt, a US-owned food producer, and intends to use it to supply provisions to the Russian military. The action, an outright affront to US-Russia relations, comes in a larger effort to bolster Russia’s military in its ongoing war in Ukraine.

A letter from Glavprodukt’s new leadership indicates the firm will provide food to Russia’s national guard and defense ministry. Glavprodukt seizure is the first of its kind against an American-owned firm, causing serious diplomatic issues.

Glavprodukt: The seized asset

Glavprodukt, the producer of canned food, was seized by the Russian government in October and was put under Rosimushchestvo’s jurisdiction. It belonged to Los Angeles-based businessman Leonid Smirnov before the seizure.

???? U.S. Canned Food Firm Seized by Kremlin May Feed Russian Army

? Summary:

Russia plans to use Glavprodukt, a U.S.-owned canned food maker seized in 2023, to supply its army, sparking diplomatic concerns amid ongoing U.S.-Russia negotiations over Ukraine.

The firm was… pic.twitter.com/ZQJQZeVAyq

The US has raised its concerns regarding this action. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that how Russia approaches Glavprodukt would determine the state of US-Russia relations.

Role of Druzhba Narodov

Reports indicate that Rosimushchestvo named a new director general for Glavprodukt at the behest of Druzhba Narodov, a Russian food distributor to the national guard. This link points to the advantages for Russian food businesses such as Druzhba Narodov and Agrocomplex.

Although Glavprodukt has not supplied Russia’s military before, this acquisition demonstrates how economic and military interests are increasingly becoming intertwined in Russia’s policy.

Move towards state control

This seizure is just part of the overall pattern of Russia’s expropriation of assets. A number of European businesses, such as Carlsberg and Fortum, have lost their Russian businesses. The Kremlin indicated that it would continue to do so. It raises the question of the fate of foreign businesses in Russia and whether there would be further aggressions in US-Russia relations.

Political and economic repercussions

The takeover of Glavprodukt by Moscow can have long-term implications. It indicates Russia’s growing dependence on state control of strategic sectors. The US would perceive this act as an act of aggression, further delaying peace talks to end the war in Ukraine. Moscow’s actions would lead the US to become more hardline, making diplomatic solutions even more difficult.

Moscow’s acquisition of Glavprodukt and its conversion to military purposes is strategic and provocative. The Kremlin seeks to enhance its military and tighten its control over domestic assets. The action is a powerful message to the West. The US and Russia might find it increasingly difficult to reconcile as tensions escalate.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House representative Steve Witkoff will head to Europe this week for critical talks to bring an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine and resume negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

In a State Department statement, Rubio and Witkoff will meet with European counterparts in Paris on Wednesday and Thursday. Rubio is scheduled to sit down with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot to talk about the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, and possibilities of re-engaging Iran on a nuclear agreement.

Witkoff will also make a trip to Rome later this week, where he is set to attend a session that features Iranian officials, a US official familiar with the plans confirmed.

This diplomatic effort follows increasing frustration within the Trump administration about stagnant peace negotiations in Ukraine. While Russia maintains its aggressive stance, President Trump has increasingly blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the long-running conflict that started with Moscow’s 2022 invasion.

The visits also represent the start of a cautious attempt to determine if Washington and Tehran can achieve a sustainable deal on Iran’s nuclear program. On Saturday and Sunday, the two nations engaged in indirect negotiations in Oman, which both sides called constructive but far from producing an agreement.

Trump has reaffirmed his threat to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities with military force if the talks fall through. On Tuesday, he sat down with senior national security aides at the White House to discuss options on Iran’s growing nuclear program.

Since coming back to office, Trump has revived a “maximum pressure” policy against Tehran, ditching the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposing broad sanctions. Although there were several indirect talks during former President Biden’s presidency, there was little progress, and Iran’s nuclear program has grown substantially.

Tahawwur Rana, who is among the main accused of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, was extradited to India from the USA on Thursday.

The United States Department of Justice has termed the extradition of convicted terrorist Tahawwur Hussain Rana as “a critical step” toward seeking justice for the victims of the 26/11 heinous Mumbai terror attacks.

“Rana’s extradition is a critical step toward seeking justice for the six Americans and scores of other victims who were killed in the heinous attacks,” the Department of Justice said in a statement dated April 10, 2025.

Rana, 64, a Canadian citizen and native of Pakistan, was extradited to stand trial in India on 10 criminal charges stemming from his alleged role in the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, the DoJ statement said.

He is charged with numerous offences, including conspiracy, murder, commission of a terrorist act, and forgery, related to his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks by Laskhar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), a designated terrorist organisation.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) successfully secured the extradition of Rana after years of sustained and concerted efforts to bring the key conspirator behind the 2008 mayhem to justice.

According to the NIA, Rana was being held in judicial custody in the US under proceedings initiated under the India-US Extradition Treaty for his extradition. The extradition finally came through after Rana exhausted all legal avenues to stay the move.

</excerpt>

The United States has cancelled all visas issued to South Sudanese passport holders. This move comes after South Sudan refused to take back its deported citizens. The ban takes effect immediately.

President Donald Trump‘s administration has taken strict action on immigration. It has focused on sending back people living in the U.S. without permission. Washington has warned that countries refusing to accept deportees will face penalties like visa bans or tariffs.

Rubio Accuses South Sudan of Non-Cooperation

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained the reason behind the decision. He said South Sudan had failed to follow the rule that every country must accept its citizens when deported by another nation.

“Effective immediately, the United States Department of State is taking actions to revoke all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders and prevent further issuance to prevent entry into the United States by South Sudanese passport holders,” Rubio said.

He made it clear the U.S. may lift the ban if South Sudan cooperates. “We will be prepared to review these actions when South Sudan is in full cooperation,” he added. Rubio also criticized the South Sudanese leadership. “It is time for South Sudan’s transitional government to stop taking advantage of the United States,” he said. The South Sudanese embassy in Washington has not responded yet.

South Sudan Faces Rising Tensions at Home

At the same time, South Sudan is dealing with political unrest. African Union mediators arrived in the capital, Juba, this week. They are trying to prevent a new civil war.

Last week, the government placed First Vice President Riek Machar under house arrest. President Salva Kiir’s administration has accused Machar of planning a new rebellion. Machar led rebel forces during the civil war from 2013 to 2018. That war killed hundreds of thousands of people.

Fighting has recently broken out in the northern Upper Nile state. Government troops have clashed with the White Army militia. This group fought alongside Machar’s forces during the civil war. However, Machar’s side now denies any link to them.

The last civil war was largely based on ethnic conflict. Kiir belongs to the Dinka group, South Sudan’s largest. Machar is from the Nuer group, the second largest.

</excerpt>

During a recent gathering of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured allies of America’s commitment to the alliance. He stressed, however, that European countries need to substantially boost their defense spending to address changing global security threats.

US Calls for Increased European Defense Investment

Marco Rubio emphasized concerns regarding the existing defense spending levels of a number of European NATO countries. He noted that some countries spend as little as 1% of their GDP on defense, a rate he considered “unfair” and “unsustainable.” Rubio said, “These are wealthy nations, particularly in Western Europe. They have lots of money. They ought to be putting that into their national security, and they’re not.

The US has suggested that the NATO allies set their defense spending goal higher than the current 2% to 5% of GDP. This ambitious target mirrors Washington’s wish for a more equitable share of defense burden in the alliance. Rubio conceded that it would take time to meet this goal but refused to set a “realistic pathway” towards it.

Implications for Transatlantic Relations

Whereas endorsing the active participation of the US in NATO, Rubio brushed off anxiety regarding American dedication as “hysteria.” He expounded that President Donald Trump isn’t against NATO but wants a league with requisite ability to uphold what it must be able to fulfill.

European partners are currently under growing pressure to reallocate their defense budgets and make greater contributions toward collective defense. This comes against a backdrop of heightened global geopolitical tensions, including recent US trade tariffs placed on European exports. European leaders have reacted negatively to the tariffs, considering them to be protectionist and potentially damaging to the global economy.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte gave assurance that the strategic changes from the US would be in coordination with European allies so as to hold on to cohesion in the alliance. However, the US request to increase defense budgets marks a historic turning point for NATO, prompting the member countries to review their contributions and memberships within the organization.

</excerpt>

The US government has revoked more than 300 visas, targeting students involved in campus protests. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the crackdown, stating that the administration was actively identifying and expelling individuals accused of vandalism, harassment, or disrupting universities. The move has sparked criticism, with opponents calling it an attack on free speech.

Visa Revocations and Government Justification

Marco Rubio confirmed that the State Department revoked over 300 visas, including student and visitor permits. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward those engaging in disruptive actions. Speaking at a press conference in Guyana, he said, “Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visas.” He later reiterated that the administration would continue removing those it deems a threat to US foreign policy.

Among those affected is Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish student at Tufts University. Federal agents detained her in Massachusetts and revoked her visa. She was later transferred to a detention facility in Louisiana. Rumeysa Ozturk, a Fulbright Scholar, had previously co-authored an article criticizing Tufts’ stance on divestment from companies linked to Israel. Her lawyer argues that she was targeted solely for exercising free speech rights.

Political and Legal Ramifications

The crackdown follows increasing tensions over pro-Palestinian activism on US campuses. The Trump administration argues that certain protests, especially those perceived as antisemitic, undermine national interests. Marco Rubio stated, “The people we’re getting rid of are not protesters. They’re taking over campuses, harassing students, and creating chaos.”

Legal experts question the administration’s justification. Rumeysa Ozturk’s lawyer filed a lawsuit challenging her detention, calling the allegations baseless. A federal judge initially barred officials from moving her out of Massachusetts without notice. However, the Justice Department revealed she had already been transferred.

Critics see these actions as a broader effort to suppress dissent. Supporters of Rumeysa Ozturk say this is the first known immigration arrest of a Boston-area student involved in pro-Palestinian activism. Advocacy groups warn that revoking visas based on political views sets a dangerous precedent.

Marco Rubio remains firm, insisting that such measures will continue. “We want them out. Every one of them I find, we’re going to kick them out,” he declared. As the crackdown intensifies, legal battles and public debate over civil liberties in the US are likely to grow.

The move has sparked backlash, with critics calling it a violation of free speech and due process.
</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Thursday that the State Department has canceled the visas of over 300 people as part of an all-out assault on anti-Israel activism on American college campuses.

“Perhaps over 300 at this point. We do it daily,” Rubio said to reporters while visiting Guyana. “Each time I find one of these crazies, I remove their visas.

Since President Donald Trump’s re-election to office in January, the administration has gone on the attack against students organizing anti-Israel protests in response to the latest fighting in Gaza.

Among the most high-profile of these is Mahmoud Khalil, a past leader of protests at Columbia University, who was arrested and shipped to Louisiana to begin deportation proceedings, even though he holds permanent US residency.

The crackdown is continuing with this month’s arrest of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Turkish student in Tufts University’s doctor of philosophy program, who was held by immigration agents after having posted an opinion article demanding acknowledgment of Palestinian “genocide.

Democratic Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley denounced the administration’s move as a constitutional rights violation. “This is a chilling abuse of Rumeysa’s constitutional right to due process and free speech. She should be released at once,” she said.

The Trump administration has justified its actions, claiming First Amendment protections don’t apply to non-citizens. Rubio made it clear that protesters causing disruptions, vandalism, and harassment on campuses would not be permitted to stay in America.

“If you lie to get a visa to come here and then you do something like that, we’re going to revoke your visa,” he said.

The move aims to deter future forced repatriations.
</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed sanctions on Friday against Thai officials involved in the deportation of at least 40 Uyghurs back to China, where Washington asserts they are subjected to persecution. The action represents Washington’s resolute opposition to China’s attempts to coerce other countries into forced returns of Uyghurs and other vulnerable people.

US State Department, in a statement, reaffirmed its intention to oppose China’s so-called human rights violations, affirming that deported Uyghurs in China tend to be tortured and subjected to enforced disappearances. The sanctions extend to family members of those involved as well. The US intends that this will act as a deterrent to Thailand and other nations against future deportations.

The deportations, conducted in February, were severely criticized internationally. The United Nations had cautioned that returning the Uyghurs to China would subject them to severe abuse and irreparable damage. Thailand justified its move, claiming that it acted within legal and human rights parameters. The Thai embassy in Washington remains silent on Rubio’s announcement.

While the US has sanctioned Thailand in the past such as by suspending military assistance following previous coups it has infrequently sanctioned Thai government leaders directly. Southeast Asia analyst Murray Hiebert said that Thailand is extremely sensitive to foreign criticism but might walk on eggshells following President Donald Trump’s recent tariff threat against nations with large trade surpluses, including Thailand.

The Washington-based Campaign for Uyghurs advocacy organization welcomed the US move, declaring that it is a powerful message against the abuse of human rights. Rubio, a long-time supporter of Uyghurs, reaffirmed Beijing’s actions towards the group constitute “genocide and crimes against humanity,” as stated initially by the US in 2021. China has dismissed such claims, proclaiming its actions are in response to fighting extremism and terrorism.

His visit follows Trump’s decision to pause military aid to Ukraine after a White House dispute.
</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Saudi Arabia from March 10-12 for meetings with Ukrainian representatives, the US Department of State said.

Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that Rubio will also meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman while in the kingdom.

After traveling to Saudi Arabia, Rubio will go to Canada to attend the G7 meeting of foreign ministers on March 12-14.

Rubio has just spoken with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, reiterating that President Donald Trump is determined to end the Russia-Ukraine war as quickly as possible.

Trump suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine following a February 28 disagreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.

Zelenskyy has also confirmed that he will visit Saudi Arabia on Monday to see Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Also, Ukrainian diplomatic and defense officials are likely to meet with the US side on Tuesday.

They urged Secretary Rubio to reconsider the administration’s decision.
</excerpt>

Dozens of US diplomats have expressed vehement opposition to the Trump administration’s plan to disband the US Agency for International Development (USAID), saying the action puts national security at risk and enables geopolitical competitors such as China and Russia to increase their influence.

In a dissent cable to be filed through the State Department’s internal channel, more than 700 diplomats called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to reconsider the administration’s broad reductions in foreign aid. They contend that the January 20 freeze on virtually all USAID programs risks American personnel overseas while jeopardizing millions of vulnerable individuals.

“The move to freeze and cancel foreign aid contracts without review undermines alliances, undermines trust, and creates opportunities for opponents,” the cable says, reported Reuters.

The freeze was done as part of President Trump’s overall effort to cut government expenditures, with billionaire advisor Elon Musk spearheading efforts to dismantle USAID. The administration has canceled almost 92% of the agency’s multiyear funding contracts, cutting $54 billion in aid programs.

Diplomats stressed that foreign aid is an essential strategic weapon and not charity, and it stabilizes areas, keeps conflicts from starting, and furthering US interests internationally. They cautioned that unpaid bills to contractors will have disastrous economic impacts, undermine confidence in the US government, and hurt domestic expansion.

Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court declared the administration’s effort to delay payments to assistance organizations for previously performed work a failure, ruling in favor of a lower court order to make the funds available.

They warned of rising nuclear risks and urged Rubio to work with Congress.
</excerpt>

A coalition of Democratic members of Congress on Wednesday urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to cooperate with Congress in extending the US-Russia nuclear weapons control treaty, New START, which expires on February 5, 2026. They stressed that, in spite of constant geopolitical tensions, the treaty has been very effective in lowering the risk of nuclear war.

In a letter, first published by Reuters, Senators Edward Markey, Christopher Murphy, and Tammy Baldwin, among others, called on the Trump administration to take the initiative to launch high-level talks for a follow-on agreement. They contended that in the past, even at times of extreme competition, like the Cold War, the US and Russia were able to create key arms control structures.

“We denounce Putin’s nuclear threats toward Ukraine,” the lawmakers stated. “However, even during moments of deep disagreements, our countries have managed to avoid nuclear disaster.”

The appeal for action came after US and Russian officials met in Riyadh, where they conferred on the cessation of the war in Ukraine and committed to further dialogue. The State Department has, however, not made any statements regarding whether negotiations involving the New START treaty were included in those talks.

First signed in 2010 and renewed in 2021 for five years, New START caps deployed strategic nuclear warheads and contains verification provisions. Although Russia has indicated a desire to maintain the treaty’s restrictions, lawmakers emphasized the need for formal talks to avoid a new arms race.

They called for Rubio to collaborate with Congress in substituting the treaty and asked for a State Department briefing on the strategy of the administration ahead.

</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also received on Monday Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss Gaza plans, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said.

Rubio’s visit to the Middle East follows President Donald Trump’s contentious proposal to relocate Palestinian citizens in Gaza to other Arab nations while the US leads reconstruction efforts. The initiative has come under fire across the Arab world.

Rubio during the meeting called for a sustained resolution of Gaza that would promote regional security, Bruce told a readout. The leaders also reiterated their backing for the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal, which was negotiated last month. Apart from Gaza, the two leaders discussed broader matters of the region, including developments in Syria, Lebanon, and the Red Sea.

Saudi state news agency SPA says that the meeting was focused on regional and global trends and the ongoing search for stability and security.

Rubio made his initial visit to the Middle East while Secretary of State last week following meetings with Israeli leaders. His trip comes before a scheduled US sit-down with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov with discussions on Ukraine’s war, and US-Russia ties overall. The Ukrainian conflict did not come up during remarks, though, among either Saudi authorities or the State Department.

Rubio Demands Hamas Destruction, Throwing Gaza Ceasefire Talks Into Turmoil

<excerpt>Rubio’s remarks, aligning with Netanyahu and Trump’s controversial Gaza redevelopment plan, have intensified regional tensions as ceasefire negotiations face uncertainty, with Hamas vowing resistance and Arab leaders preparing to push back.
</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has resolutely supported the goals of Israel in the war in Gaza, stating that Hamas “must be eliminated.” The comments, given while meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday in West Jerusalem, cast additional doubt over the tenuous ceasefire.

Rubio’s visit comes as the starting point of a tour of the region, in which he is to encounter opposition from Arab leaders about US President Donald Trump’s incendiary suggestion of moving Gaza’s Palestinian inhabitants and rebuilding the area under US control a move condemned by human rights groups as ethnic cleansing.

“The president has been courageous, presenting something different instead of the same old conventional wisdom of before,” Rubio said in a statement to reporters. Netanyahu shared his view, saying the plan is “bold” and reinforcing his support for Trump on the future of Gaza. He further warned that “the gates of hell would be open” if Hamas would not free the remaining hostages from its attack on October 7, 2023.

The statements arrive on the heels of expiring the initial phase of the truce. While the second phase, set to feature prisoner swap, lasting ceasefire, and withdrawal of Israelis, is not finalized, the words of Rubio hint at the toughening stance.

US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that there are negotiations underway, with an Israeli delegation to head to Cairo on Monday for more talks. Former US diplomat Nabeel Khoury, however, criticized Rubio’s policy for bypassing the Palestinian Authority, citing his next destinations as Riyadh and perhaps the UAE.

Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdan rejected Trump’s plan for relocation, reasserting Palestinian resilience. “It’s not real estate it’s a homeland,” he said, claiming that demands for the destruction of Hamas have always made the group stronger.

A smaller plane took off later, and Rubio continued his journey, including meetings with Zelensky and diplomatic talks.
</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was cut short from his European travel on Friday after his plane hit a mechanical glitch, forcing the aircraft to have to return to Andrews Air Force Base.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce explained, “The aircraft on which Secretary Rubio is traveling had a mechanical problem.” A smaller plane later departed with Rubio on board, bound for Europe, although media were not aboard.

Rubio was set to meet US Vice President JD Vance in a session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after a telephonic conversation between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Rubio’s tour takes him through Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, where he will speak on a tenuous Gaza ceasefire and meet on Trump’s contentious suggestion of removing Palestinian inhabitants from Gaza.
