Khelo India Youth Games Set for May in Bihar

Very enthusiastic about Khelo India Games turning into a robust pillar of Indian sports, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that there would be 14 various forms of Khelo India Games during the season.

New Categories and Permanent Venues Announced by Khelo India

Speaking with the media on Friday, the Minister stated that there would be Khelo India Tribal Games, beach games, martial arts games, water games etc.

There may be permanent locations for a few of the Khelo India Games, with a complete calendar, so that everyone can prepare well and arrange their logistics.

Digitised Athlete Data and World-Class Training in Khelo India

With the digitisation of everything to do with the athletes and their performances, the Minister emphasized that there would be a huge list of several thousand athletes who would be given further training in world-class facilities to enable them to reach international standards.

“Rather than taking our sportspersons overseas, which is more or less done in order to secure the sports science support, we will condition our sportspersons at home with the most qualified experts. Already there exist such centers within the country,” said the Minister, highlighting the need for the country to have a number of such centers around the country for tuning the athletes on a routine basis, across various disciplines.

Corporate Support and Professional Sports Management

With the corporate world being assigned to sponsor one game each, the government is assured that it would result in professional management of sport, ensuring accountability, transparency and effective governance of sport by the different national sport federations.

The Minister believed that no shortage of the power of sport existed in the nation, but what was necessary was a very strong system that could divert resources passing through an input line and getting transformed into spectacular output in the form of international medals.

Over 500 Cyclists Join Fit India Cycling Drive’s Sustainability, Pollution-Free Living Mission in Delhi

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday announced the launch of the ‘Fit India Cycling Drive’ on Tuesday morning at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi. The movement took a significant stride towards a healthier and greener India according to a release from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.

The event was flagged off Mandaviya, in the presence of Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, MP Tejasvi Surya, as well as elite athletes, including Paris Paralympics bronze medalist Simran Sharma, Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medalist Nitu Ghanghas and Asian Games 2022 bronze medalist Preeti Pawar.

Close to 500 cycling enthusiasts joined in for the 3-kilometre joy ride from the stadium to Raisina Hills and back, aimed to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation.

Reiterating the vision of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Mandaviya said, “We have to bring the Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat a reality when we celebrate 100 years of independence in 2047 and it is pertinent, we become a full-fledged healthy and fit nation.”

Highlighting the importance of cycling, he added, “We have launched this event as ‘Fit India Cycling Tuesdays’ but for the convenience of cycling enthusiasts, this will now be conducted on Sundays and now be called ‘Sundays on Cycle’. Doctors, journalists, teachers, corporate professionals and youth will join for an hour-long cycling ride on Sundays, not only in New Delhi but also in all parts of the country. Cycling gives a big boost to the environment; it is the solution to pollution and also contributes to sustainability.”

Tuesday’s event, held simultaneously in over 1000 locations across the nation, was organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ Fit India movement, in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), MY Bharat, and various sports authorities.

The cycling events were held simultaneously across Sports Authority of India regional centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) as well as the Khelo India centres (KICs) across the country, which saw a participation of more than 50,000 people.

The nationwide Cycling Drive was joined by well-known athletes including two-time Paralympics gold medallist Sumit Antil in NCOE Rohtak, Paris Paralympics gold medalist Navdeep in NCOE Gandhinagar, Paris Paralympics bronze medalist Deepthi Jeevanji in NCOE Bangalore, former Indian women’s team hockey captain Rani Rampal and Olympian shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor.

The launch event saw the presence of teenagers as well as senior citizens. Commenting on the wide participation, 2023 World Championships gold medalist Nitu Ghanghas said, “This is a major platform for both young and old to stay fit and will also contribute to keeping India pollution-free. I was interacting with Sports Minister during the ride and I felt inspired by what he is doing for sports in the country.”

Mansukh Mandaviya was named the new Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled his third-term cabinet. Mandaviya replaces Anurag Thakur, who previously held the position.

Mandaviya secured a decisive victory in the 2024 General Elections, winning the Porbandar Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat by defeating his Congress rival Lalit Vasoya with a margin of 3.83 lakh votes. Besides the sports portfolio, Mandaviya will also oversee the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers.

Who Is Mansukh Mandaviya?

Born on June 1, 1972, in Hanol, Gujarat, Mandaviya’s political career began with his involvement in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the BJP’s student wing. He served as the secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Patilana from 1994 to 1996 and was the Taluka president of BJP’s Patilana unit from 1998 to 2003. Mandaviya was a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2007 and later chaired the Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Ltd. from January 2011 to March 2012. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and re-elected in 2018. In 2021, during the COVID-19 crisis, Mandaviya took over the health portfolio, succeeding Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

Mandaviya’s Health Ministry Tenure

During the severe second wave of COVID-19, Mandaviya’s ministry was responsible for ramping up the supply of oxygen and medicines and overseeing the vaccination program. In the newly formed government, the health ministry has been assigned to JP Nadda.

Outgoing Sports Minister Anurag Thakur

Anurag Thakur, who has represented the Hamirpur constituency in Himachal Pradesh five times, served as the Sports Minister since July 7, 2021. During his tenure, India achieved its best-ever performance at the Tokyo Olympics, winning a record seven medals. Thakur also oversaw the government’s decision to make medal winners in all Khelo India competitions eligible for government jobs, a move aligned with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of nurturing grassroots talent and making sports a viable career option.

Mansukh Mandaviya faces competition from Congress’ Lalit Vasoya, a former MLA representing the Patidar community, in the Porbandar Lok Sabha seat. Mandaviya, before becoming a Rajya Sabha member, secured victory in the Palitana assembly seat of Bhavnagar in 2002.

The voting in Gujarat is scheduled to take place in a single phase on May 7 for 25 Lok Sabha seats, with the results slated to be announced on June 4.

India Increases Medical Seats to Over 1 Lakh in the Last Decade

Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has announced a significant surge in the number of medical seats in India over the past 10 years, reaching a total of 1,08,940 MBBS seats and 70,674 postgraduate seats. The minister, sharing the data on the social media platform ‘X’, highlighted that there has been substantial growth in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

In 2014, the country had 51,348 MBBS seats, and over the past decade, an impressive 57,592 new MBBS seats have been added, more than doubling the initial count. For postgraduate medical seats, the figures have seen an equally remarkable rise from 31,185 seats in 2014 to the current count of 70,674. During the same period, 39,489 new postgraduate seats have been introduced.

The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, had previously informed the Rajya Sabha about the approval of 157 government medical colleges under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). Covid vaccination didn’t raise the risk of unexplained sudden death among young adults: Govt

The government told Parliament on Friday that a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) found that young adults in India who received the COVID-19 vaccination did not have an increased risk of sudden, unexplained death.
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya responded in writing to a question posed in the Lok Sabha, stating that after being hospitalized for COVID-19, the likelihood of unexplained sudden deaths was increased by certain lifestyle behaviors and a family history of sudden death.
The minister was answering a question about whether there had been any documented cases in the nation of a connection between the Covid vaccine and heart attack incidents.

Some people have reported experiencing sudden deaths after contracting Covid; however, Mandaviya stated that there is not enough evidence to determine the cause of these deaths.
In order to gather information about the increasing number of cardiac arrest cases that were reported following the Covid pandemic, the National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) of the ICMR carried out a study titled.

“Factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India — A multicentric matched case-control study” at 47 tertiary-care hospitals located across 19 states and Union territories from May to August.

Mansukh Mandaviya :Pharma industry needs to concentrate on innovative products to achieve global leadership

In order to advance up the value chain and take the lead globally in the industry, the local pharmaceutical industry must concentrate on the research and development of novel goods, according to Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday. The medical technology companies were instructed to develop essential equipment in India for the international markets by the Union Health Minister, who also oversees the Chemical and Fertilizers Ministry.

Mandavya said that domestic pharmaceutical companies invest less in R&D than global corporations when he officially unveiled the National Policy on Research & Development and Innovation in the Pharma-Med Tech Sector here.

“International MNCs spend 20-25 per cent of their profits in research and innovation while for Indian companies the average is around 10 per cent…Till the time we do not come out with research-led innovative products, we cannot lead the segment globally,” he noted.

By 2047, he claimed, the government wants the pharmaceutical sector to be self-sufficient. Mandaviya urged the pharmaceutical industry to put more effort into creating high-quality products than merely more of them. He claimed that in order to transform the domestic pharmaceutical industry and position it as a leader, the government has been collaborating closely with business and academia. The National Policy on Research & Development and Innovation in the Pharma-Med Tech Sector in India was announced by the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) in August of this year.

The goal of the policy is to promote research and development in pharmaceuticals, including conventional drugs, phytopharmaceuticals, and medical devices. In order to maintain global competitiveness, it acknowledges the need to place more emphasis on promoting R&D through locally developed products and technologies throughout the value chain. The Scheme for Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech Sector (PRIP), which aims to shift the domestic pharmaceutical and medical technology sector from cost-based to innovation-based growth by bolstering the nation’s research infrastructure, was also formally unveiled by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister, suggested on Friday that the West Bengal government implement the AB-PMJAY national health insurance program at the local level for the state’s residents. “We are dedicated to offering top-notch healthcare services to all West Bengal residents. Under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian government is dedicated to offering top-notch medical care to all of its residents.

For the benefit of the people of West Bengal, the State Government should put Ayushman Bharat into practice, according to Mandaviya, who also noted that the Federal government is taking all necessary measures to guarantee that the state’s health services are of the highest caliber. The Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) was one of the programs the minister reviewed that delivers health services in the state.

PMJAY, launched on September 23, 2018, gives an annual health cover of Rs 5 lakh to eligible families.
So far, 30 of 33 states have agreed to the co-branding plan except for Delhi, Odisha, and West Bengal which have opted to remain out of it.
Accusing the central government of taking all the credit for it, West Bengal pulled out of the scheme in 2019.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said she would be willing to rejoin if the Centre funded the scheme fully.

Bharat Biotech launches first India-made nasal Covid vaccine iNCOVACC

On the occasion of the 74th Republic Day Bharat Biotech’s first India-made nasal Covid-19 vaccine, iNCOVACC was launched by Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday.

“Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL), a global leader in vaccine innovation and developer of vaccines for infectious diseases, today dedicated iNCOVACC® (BBV154) to the nation, the world’s 1st COVID intranasal vaccine for Primary series and Heterologous booster,” release stated.

The statement further reads “Product development and clinical trials for iNCOVACC® were funded in part by the Government of India, through the Department of Biotechnology’s, Covid Suraksha Program.”

Meanwhile, from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) it got the approval “for iNCOVACC® to be administered for primary series and as heterologous booster doses”

“Amid growing Covid-19 cases and emerging variants of the highly transmissible virus, a booster dose of the vaccine becomes imperative. iNCOVACC® is now available on CoWIN, and priced at INR 800 for private markets and INR 325 for supplies to Govt of India and State Governments,” the statement read.

“iNCOVACC® is a recombinant replication-deficient adenovirus vectored vaccine with a pre-fusion stabilized spike protein. This vaccine candidate was evaluated in phase I, II, and III clinical trials with successful results,” it stated further.

Moreover, through nasal drops, the vaccine will be formulated to allow intranasal delivery. The vaccine is designed and developed to be cost-effective.

“As needleless vaccination, Bharat Biotech’s iNCOVACC® will be the world’s first such booster dose. India will now have more options when it comes to third doses or precautionary doses,” it said.

“Clinical trials and extensive humoral and cell-mediated responses were conducted to evaluate iNCOVACC® as a primary dose schedule, and as a heterologous booster dose for subjects who have previously received two doses of the two commonly administered Covid-19 vaccines in India. The intranasal vaccine is stable at 2-8°C for easy storage and distribution and has been designed for efficient distribution and easy pain-free administration,” it informed further.

Despite the relatively low demand for Covid vaccines, “Bharat Biotech continued product development in intranasal vaccines, to be well-prepared with platform technologies for future infectious diseases. Bharat Biotech has also initiated the development of variant-specific vaccines for COVID in an attempt to be future-ready”.

“iNCOVACC® was developed in partnership with Washington University, St. Louis, which had designed and developed the recombinant adenoviral vectored construct and evaluated it in preclinical studies for efficacy. Product development related to preclinical safety evaluation, large-scale manufacturing scale-up, formulation, and delivery device development, including human clinical trials, were conducted by Bharat Biotech. The Technology Development Board, Govt of India has been instrumental in debt financing for commercial scale manufacturing facilities,” it said.

India surpasses 1,50,000 Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Friday said before December 31 India has surpassed 150,000 operational Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs). On this achievement, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated the nation. “PM Narendra Modi had set a target of starting 1.5 lahks AB-HWCs in the country by December 2022. I am happy to inform you that today we have achieved this target. These centers will definitely strengthen the primary health care of the citizens,” the Union Health minister tweeted. Manufacturing at Noida-based pharma company halted, says Mansukh Mandaviya

In view of the reports of contamination in cough syrup Dok1, Max the manufacturing activities of the Noida-based pharma company have been stopped.

Taking to Twitter Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday tweeted, “Following inspection by @CDSCO_INDIA_INF [Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation] team in view of reports of contamination in cough syrup Dok1 Max, all manufacturing activities of Marion Biotech at NOIDA unit have been stopped yesterday night, while further investigation is ongoing.

As reports of children dying after consuming cough syrup Noida-based pharma Marion Biotech has come under a cloud. The matter is under investigation.

Meanwhile, a report has been brought by the company that why cases came from a single hospital in Uzbekistan.

Marion Biotech Pharma Company legal head Hasan Harris said, “We await the reports, factory was inspected. We have halted the production of all medicines. It needs to be found why cases came from a single hospital there. Our products also go to other countries.”

After getting the information a joint inspection was carried out by UP Drug Control and the CDSCO team at the NOIDA facility of the manufacturer, Marion Biotech.

The cough syrup company Marion Biotech is a licensed manufacturer and makes Dok1 Max syrup and Tablets for export purposes granted by Drugs Controller, Uttar Pradesh.

However, from the manufacturing premises, the cough syrup has been sent to the Regional Drugs Testing Laboratory (RDTL), Chandigarh for testing.

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (INSACOG) on Friday will hold a virtual meeting. In the meeting, the main focus will be on the Genome sequencing results of international travelers who tested Covid-19 positive.

Meanwhile, INSACOG will release a bulletin next week on different types of variants present in India.

Earlier in November INSACOG issued a bulletin mentioning that XBB BJ.1/ BM.1.1.1 and said, “XBB, a BJ 1/ BM.1.1.1 recombinant lineage with a breakpoint in the spike protein is presently appearing in multiple countries. This recombinant lineage was first detected in Singapore and US and has also been identified in multiple states in India. A sub-lineage of XBB with an additional mutation is also detected (XBB.1).”

The Union Health Ministry on Thursday said, international passengers who will be coming from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand have to undergo mandatory RT-PCR tests and from 1 January 2023 they have to update a report on the Air Suvidha portal.

Amid increasing COVID-19 cases this step has been taken by the Union Health Ministry. The Union Health Ministry has warned that India may see a surge in Covid cases in mid-January and the next 40 days will be crucial.

Moreover, at the Chennai airport on Wednesday two passengers tested positive for Covid-19. “Two passengers, who arrived from Dubai, tested positive at the Chennai airport today. Both hail from the Alangudi district of Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai. Their test samples have been sent to the State Public Health Laboratory,” the Tamil Nadu Health department stated.

Between 24 December and 26 December, 39 international fliers tested positive for Covid after which random testing of international passengers has been started.

“Passengers of as many as 498 international flights were screened in the last three days — December 24, 25, and 26. A total of 1,780 swab samples were collected for Covid tests. The cumulative number of samples collected (from international fliers), so far, is 3,994. The cumulative number of samples testing positive for Covid is 39 and of samples sent for whole genome sequencing is 39,” a source said.

However, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya personally visited Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.

“To ensure that there is no Covid surge in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked us to be careful. The government is also making necessary preparations in anticipation of a rise in Covid infections. Today, mock drills are being conducted across Covid hospitals in the country to ensure people receive proper treatment in the event of a rise in cases,” Mandaviya said.

Wearing masks made mandatory in Karnataka’s restaurants, pubs, theatre halls, schools, colleges

In several countries wearing masks has been made compulsory and now Karnataka has made wearing masks mandatory inside restaurants, pubs, theatre halls, schools, and colleges. “There’s no need to panic. But we have to take precautions from now on,” said Health Minister of Karnataka K. Sudhakar. Ahead of New Year celebrations government said Covid protocols have to be followed strictly. Meanwhile, at 4 pm Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will hold a virtual meeting with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on the Covid-19 preparedness, situation.

Mansukh Mandaviya to hold meeting with Indian Medical Association

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) will hold a virtual meeting with Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday.

Meanwhile, regarding the Covid-19 situation and preparedness, the meeting with IMA will be held at 4 pm.

Earlier on Saturday, Mandaviya urged people to wear masks and follow covid appropriate behavior.

“We are working on alert mode to control the spread of Covid-19 and are conducting environmental, sewage, and human surveillance. Virus RNA was found in the sewage samples in Delhi and Mumbai,” Mandaviya said.

Moreover, Mandaviya has also urged people to avoid crowded places and also requested people wear a mask.

In the wake of the COVID alarm, mock drills will be held on 27 December at all health facilities across the country.

However, on Thursday Prime Minister Narendra Modi also chaired a high-level meeting to assess the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Furthermore, the meeting was also attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Miniter Mansukh Mandaviya, and NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Parameswaran Iyer.

RT-PCR test mandatory for arrivals from 5 nations

The passengers who will be arriving from China, South Korea, Japan, and Thailand RT-PCR test has been made mandatory for passengers by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Talking to the media Health Minister Mandaviya said, “The RT-PCR test to be mandatory for international arrivals from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand. On arrival, if any passenger from these countries is found symptomatic or tests positive for Covid-19 infection, then he/she will be put under quarantine.”

Meanwhile, for all the international passengers arriving from these Asian countries, the Air Suvidha form will be declared compulsory.

Earlier on Friday following a meeting with state ministers Mandaviya tweeted, “Emphasized on the need to be alert in a COVID-19 review meeting with State Health Ministers. There is no need to panic. We have 3 years of experience in pandemic management. The Centre Govt will provide all the support to combat COVID-19. We will take action as per the needs.”

“Also, stressed on combating the pandemic with a pre-emptive & proactive approach by increasing testing, genome sequencing and following COVID-appropriate behavior,” Mandaviya said.

Moreover, a senior Union health ministry said, “We are keeping a close watch on the global Covid situation on a daily basis and we will take whatever measures are required to ensure that the disease does not spread in the country.”

“We do not have any reliable Covid data to go by from China but what we are hearing is the case load is high and it is increasing; Japan has also seen a sudden surge in cases and we are being extremely vigilant,” the official said.

However, for the upcoming festive season, the health ministry also released guidelines. Globally lakhs of cases are being recorded henceforth few hundred cases are recorded in India.

Mansukh Mandaviya: School Dropout Rates Of Girls Declined

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya believes that the construction of toilets is the reason for a decline in the dropout rate of girls from school since 2014. He said, “Number of postgraduate medical seats has nearly doubled. Over 4,5 lakh toilets have been built in 2.5 lakh schools which has resulted in a dropout ratio dipped from 1.7% to 13%.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya participates in bicycle rally

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya participated in a bicycle rally at Kartavya Path along with a team from AIIMS to create awareness about Tuberculosis (TB) on Monday.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of Ashtami, the health minister also organized a dinner after the Kartavya Path bicycle rally.

Moreover, Union Health Minister invited Medical students from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Director Dr. M Srinivas, AIIMS Dean, Professors, and faculty members to his residence.

Talking to the media an attendee said, “It was a gesture for the Medical students to remove a barrier and reach out to medical students without hesitation, this was the first time when a Union Health Minister invited and interacted with medical students to motivate them to future accomplishments.”

However, for the first time, the Union Health Minister congratulated and interacted with the top 25 scorers in NEET PG 2022.
