</excerpt>

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), blaming it for the pollution crisis affecting both the Yamuna River and Delhi’s air quality. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla, speaking from Kalindi Kunj’s Yamuna ghat, accused AAP’s policies of worsening the river’s contamination, which poses risks to devotees gathering for Chhath Puja.

“Many people have gathered here to offer prayers to the Sun god,” Poonawalla said. “But a thick layer of toxic foam on the Yamuna’s surface poses serious health risks. Despite spending ₹7,000 crore, the condition of the river has deteriorated.” He further noted that even Congress leaders have commented on the worsening state of the Yamuna, pointing out AAP’s alleged negligence.

Poonawalla also criticized Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of being absent while citizens face health risks due to the pollution.

Delhi’s “Gas Chamber” Air Quality Blamed on AAP

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari voiced his concerns about Delhi’s air quality, stating, “The pollution in Delhi has reached dangerous levels. AAP has turned Delhi into a gas chamber, and Kejriwal’s leadership style is one where he blames others while holding power.”

Tiwari urged Delhi’s citizens to vote for a BJP-led government in upcoming elections, promising a “double-engine government” that would transform Delhi into a “world-class capital city.”

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the ‘very poor’ category, registering at 383 as of Friday morning. The city has been shrouded in smog for eight days post-Diwali, with an AQI range that poses severe health risks.

Chhath Puja Devotees Face Pollution Crisis

Despite warnings, devotees gathered at the Yamuna ghat to observe Chhath Puja rituals. Drone footage revealed thick toxic foam floating on the river, symbolizing the high pollution levels in the Yamuna. On Thursday, the Delhi High Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking permission to perform Chhath Puja on the Yamuna’s banks, citing health concerns due to the contamination. The court noted that nearly 1,000 alternative sites were set up for the celebrations.

In response to the pollution crisis, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai chaired a meeting earlier this week, urging North Indian states to collaborate on reducing pollution. Rai accused BJP-led neighboring states of politicizing the issue, emphasizing that a collective effort is essential to address the region’s worsening air quality.

As the pollution debate continues, the BJP and AAP remain divided over the causes and solutions to Delhi’s environmental crisis, with each party blaming the other for the challenges facing the city’s residents.

A video shared by Manoj Tiwari on X shows him desealing the property in northeast Delhi’s Sabhapur. The incident took place on Thursday.

— Manoj Tiwari (@ManojTiwariMP) June 14, 2024

The property, which was booked and partially demolished on June 7 due to illegal construction, was slated for temporary desealing by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Sources indicate that MCD had issued a notice before sealing and demolition actions. Subsequently, officials issued an order on June 12 to temporarily unseal the property, enabling occupants to retrieve their belongings. However, before the deadline, Tiwari visited the area and removed the seal.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi has initiated an investigation into the incident and requested a report within 48 hours, according to the Aam Aadmi Party. In response to his actions, Tiwari asserted that MCD had selectively targeted certain houses for demolition. He mentioned having spoken to the MCD deputy commissioner of the zone but expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation provided regarding the specific targeting of those houses.

“If the houses were built in violation of the rules, the entire lane would be illegal. This is the new strategy adopted by AAP-led MCD to create disharmony after the party’s loss in Lok Sabha elections. This is vendetta politics,” stated Tiwari.

Tiwari’s foray into politics further showcases his ambition and dedication to public service. Contesting from the North East Delhi constituency, he brings a wealth of experience as a Member of Parliament. However, his journey is not without challenges, as indicated by the (2) cases against him. However, it is his versatility in the entertainment industry that has earned him widespread recognition. As a singer and actor, Tiwari has captivated audiences with his performances, establishing himself as a household name in Indian entertainment.

Vision for North East Delhi

Tiwari’s campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is underpinned by a vision of progress and prosperity for North East Delhi. </excerpt>

As polling commenced in Delhi, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi cast his vote during the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections on Saturday.

Displaying his inked finger, Tiwari commented, “Today, people are voting in the favour of nation and country and they are voting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this cause.”

Addressing the challenges posed by opposition bloc INDIA’s candidate Kanhaiya Kumar, Tiwari criticized Kumar, stating that people who disparaged the national army, wished for terrorists like Afzal to emerge from every house, and celebrated the loss of paramilitary forces cannot be seen as a threat.

Tiwari remarked, “Opposition candidate Kanhaiya Kumar has shown his true identity by abusing our national army, reciting ‘har ghar Afzal niklega,’ and celebrating the loss of lives of our paramilitary forces against Naxalites in Chhattisgarh. People will not waste their votes on such leaders. This election is about choosing the Prime Minister of India, and Modi Ji resides in the hearts of the people. They will vote for the BJP and the nation. He quoted, ‘Vote Narendra Modi Ji Ko, Vote Desh Ko, Vote Kamal Ko.'”

When questioned about the impact of recent events in Delhi, such as the Swati Maliwal case and the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Tiwari responded, “The people who protect the corrupt and beat women in their homes with pride and dictatorship will be beaten by Delhi’s voters today. The voters will respond with their votes.”

Manoj Tiwari is the incumbent MP of North East Delhi, having won the seat in 2014 and 2019. In 2019, Kanhaiya Kumar ran as a Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate from Begusarai in Bihar, where he lost to Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Giriraj Singh. Kumar later joined Congress in 2021.

The Congress is contesting the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the AAP in Delhi. Under the seat-sharing arrangement, Congress is contesting three seats while AAP has fielded candidates in four constituencies in Delhi.

The seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the capital are New Delhi, South Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi, Chandni Chowk, North West, and North East Delhi.

</excerpt>

Criticizing his opponent, BJP candidate from North-East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari said that his opponent Kanhaiya Kumar is accused of betraying the country and that the people will not cast a vote in favor of him.

As voting for all seven seats began in Delhi, Manoj Tiwari said, “Today is a very prestigious day. Again to elect Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the people of Delhi are out.”

He further criticized Kanhaiya Kumar by saying, “There is no real challenge when the nation is progressing so well. The challenges these individuals bring are to their own party, which is falling apart with their involvement. They can’t challenge anyone else. The nation supports ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai,’ not someone who chants ‘Desh ki tukde honge’ and is accused of betraying the country. The victory will go to someone who respects the army, not someone who abuses it.”
“The candidate chosen by Congress (Kanhaiya Kumar) has been abusing the army of the country. I think even the traditional voters will not vote for him. They will refuse to vote but will not cast their votes in his favour. We have to cast votes for the development of the country and for PM Modi,” he added.

Commenting on the voter turnout today, Manoj said, “This morning, I heard that voter enthusiasm is higher in these elections compared to 2014 and 2019. I urge all voters to head to their designated booths and cast their ballots.”

Manoj Tiwari is the incumbent MP of North West Delhi having won the seat in 2014 and 2019.

In 2019, Kanhaiya Kumar contested as a Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate from Begusarai in Bihar, which he lost to Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Giriraj Singh. Later, he joined the Congress in 2021.

</excerpt>

With voting already concluded in 428 Lok Sabha constituencies across 25 states and Union territories over five phases, attention now shifts to the penultimate phase of the general election. This phase will involve polling for 58 seats, including all seven seats in Delhi. The high-energy campaign for this sixth phase, which saw Union ministers, chief ministers, and senior political leaders visiting the national capital, concluded on Thursday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won all seven Lok Sabha seats in the previous election, has decided to drop all MPs except Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi. Meanwhile, AAP and Congress have formed a seat-sharing arrangement in Delhi as part of the opposition INDIA bloc. AAP is fielding candidates in four of Delhi’s Lok Sabha seats, while Congress will contest the remaining three.

The BJP’s campaign featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing two rallies, alongside Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Smriti Irani, and Piyush Goyal. Additionally, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states, including Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh), Pushkar Singh Dhami (Uttarakhand), and Pramod Sawant (Goa), were actively involved.

The Congress campaign was spearheaded by its president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, and Sachin Pilot, among others. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently out on interim bail until June 1, conducted roadshows supporting both AAP and Congress candidates.

During Kejriwal’s time in jail, his wife Sunita Kejriwal led roadshows for party candidates. Senior party leaders Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Sanjay Singh, and Gopal Rai also held numerous public meetings and outreach activities under the “Jail Ka Jawab Vote Se” campaign.

With 162 candidates contesting, the North East Delhi constituency has the highest number of contenders.

Key Battles to Watch

New Delhi: AAP MLA Somnath Bharti is competing against BJP’s Bansuri Swaraj, the daughter of the late Sushma Swaraj. Bansuri is leveraging her mother’s legacy, while Bharti relies on AAP’s local governance reputation to win this high-profile seat.

North East Delhi: Congress’ Kanhaiya Kumar is challenging two-time MP Manoj Tiwari in the North East Delhi constituency. Tiwari is aiming for a third consecutive term. Notably, both Tiwari and Kumar hail from Bihar and are targeting the Purvanchali vote base.

East Delhi: The BJP has replaced sitting MP Gautam Gambhir with Harsh Malhotra, a 60-year-old LLB graduate, after Gambhir requested to be relieved of political duties to focus on his cricket commitments. Malhotra will contest against AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar, a 35-year-old sitting MLA from the Kondli assembly constituency.

BJP Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari asserted that the citizens of Delhi were jubilant over Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest. Tiwari alleged that the AAP leader had plundered the national capital, causing widespread suffering.

“He has dedicated himself to bringing Delhi to the brink of ruin. Delhi residents are deeply aggrieved by him, which is why sweets were distributed following his arrest. His administration has failed to accomplish anything in Delhi; instead, they have engaged in embezzlement and lined their pockets. Kejriwal has pillaged Delhi,” Tiwari stated to ANI.

Arvind Kejriwal was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday night regarding the liquor policy case, making him the first sitting chief minister to be incarcerated.

On Friday, the AAP declared that Arvind Kejriwal would remain in office as the Delhi Chief Minister and would govern from jail. The BJP has demanded Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation on ethical grounds.

“Those who continually proclaim they will govern from jail should remember: jails are known to house gangs, not governments,” Manoj Tiwari remarked.

In Chhattisgarh, Congress promised to give Rs 500 unemployment allowance to every unemployed person and Rs 1,000 to women, but they did nothing. It was evident that a change was on the horizon as they played political games in power.

In Madhya Pradesh, every sister proudly says that Modi is in our hearts, so we knew we would win. Regarding the Chief Minister in all three states, he remarked, ‘We didn’t know who would become the CM, but whoever it is, they are good.”

What Manoj Tiwari said about the faces of chief ministers:

He stated that the prominent leaders of all three states have openly honored every Chief Minister, making every political party in the world think about BJP’s internal democracy. Every BJP worker considers everyone equal.

On the question of opposition leaders questioning PM Modi’s leadership, Manoj Tiwari said – “What has been seen in other parties is not visible in the BJP. He said that the people of the country trust Modi, and Modi trusts the people.”

BJP lawmaker Manoj Tiwari, claimed on Sunday that 450 voters in the Subash Mohalla ward of the nation’s capital had their names removed from the voter list because they support the BJP. He then demanded that the elections in the ward be cancelled and held again.

He was speaking to reporters at the Subhash Mohalla ward’s Yamuna Vihar polling booth. The BJP MP went on to claim that the Delhi government is involved in a massive conspiracy.

“In the Subash Mohalla ward, the names of 450 voters have been deleted from the voters’ list because they support the BJP.” “This is a big conspiracy by the Delhi government. I will complain about this and appeal for the cancellation of these polls and re-election,” said Tiwari.

Anil Chaudhary, the president of the Delhi Congress, previously asserted that when he went to the voting booth to cast his ballot in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, he discovered that his name was missing from the voters’ list.

According to Chaudhary, his name is neither on the voter list nor the list of people who were erased.

“My name is neither on the voter list nor in the deleted list. My wife has voted. Officials are checking it,” said the Delhi Congress president who arrived at a polling booth in Dallupura to cast his vote.

This is the first civic election after the fresh delimitation exercise. There were 272 wards in Delhi and three corporations- NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC) in Delhi from 2012-2022 that later reunified into an MCD that had formally come into existence on May 22.

Over the death of Aam Aadmi Party’s trade wing secretary, Sandeep Bhardwaj Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday said it was wrong to allege the AAP leader took his life.

AAP leader Sandeep Bhardwaj’s body was found dead on Thursday at his Rajouri Garden residence on which Deputy CM Sisodia said Bhardwaj did not take his life but was murdered.

While connecting his death over the death Delhi Deputy CM Sisodia said, Sandeep Bhardwaj, himself denied a party ticket to contest the upcoming MCD polls.

Earlier on Friday, the Delhi deputy chief minister Sisodia addressed the press conference and said, “This is very sad. Sandeep Ji was close to me too. He used to play a very important role in the trade wing. You cannot connect the death with the ticket, it’s wrong.”

Meanwhile, Manoj Tiwari alleged that Bhardwaj did not die by suicide.

“I believe it is not suicide but murder. Sandeep Bhardwaj was assured ticket. Evidence doesn’t make it look like suicide. It’s also coming to the knowledge that a ticket for that seat was sold. Abetting suicide is also like murder. AAP chief and leadership have committed sin,” Tiwari said.

Moreover, one of Bhardwaj’s friends took him to the “Kukreja hospital”.

“A PCR call was received from Kukreja Hospital, Rajouri garden at 4.40 PM that one person Sandeep Bhardwaj s/ o Naresh Bhardwaj R/0 B 10/15, Rajouri garden Delhi Age 55 yrs has been brought dead due to hanging at residence. Crime’team has been called at the place,” police said.

Over Bhardwaj’s death, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed grief and offered condolences.

Taking to Twitter CM Kejriwal tweeted, “Extremely saddened by the sudden death of Aam Aadmi Party worker Sandeep Bhardwaj in Delhi. May God give his soul a place at his holy feet. My condolences to his family members in this hour of grief and the entire party stands with the family members of Sandeep Ji in this difficult time.”

Under section 174 Crpc inquest proceedings are being conducted as per law.

However, further investigation into the matter is underway.

A week ahead of the MCD elections the incident took place. The MCD elections will be held on 4 December and the counting of votes will take place on 7 December.

Furthermore, from both Bharatiya Janata Party BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) there are 250 valid candidates and Congress has 247 seats as three nominations of Congress were canceled in MCD elections.

Notably, currently, BJP holds the civic reins in the national capital and AAP is in the power. The contest is two-way between the BJP and AAP.

As a response to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s very unusual appeal to worries about the state of the Indian economy, BJP leader Nitesh Rane tweeted a 200 rupee note- photoshopped to feature Maratha monarch and icon Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Rane posted the altered note only moments after the AAP politician pleaded with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create money bearing the likenesses of Ganesh and Lakshmi, two Hindu deities, to support government attempts to spur economic growth and stop the rupee’s decline against the dollar.

“Ye perfect hai…” Rane wrote as he shared the image of the photoshopped note.

The BJP leader added a cheeky smiley for extra effect.

Kejriwal’s suggestion – he even invoked Indonesia as an example, pointing out that government used photos of Ganesha on some of its notes.

“As I said we have to make a lot of effort to improve the economic situation…”

But also with that, we need blessings from Gods and Goddesses. The whole country will get blessings if, on currency notes, there is a photo of Ganesh Ji and Lakshmi ji on one side and Gandhi ji on other side,” he said.

Both the Congress and the BJP responded to the advise with taunts.

The idea was put forth ahead of elections in BJP-ruled Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, according to the leader of the latter party’s Delhi unit.

“Their (AAP) minister, Gujarat chief and leaders abused Hindu gods… and yet they are in the party. They’re bringing new tactics to save face in polls. Those who objected to Ram Mandir have come with a new mask,” Manoj Tiwari said.

In order to hide its “failed” policies and its “anti-Hindu mindset,” the BJP further charged Kejriwal with engaging in “political drama.”

Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit blasted Kejriwal, calling the proposal ‘vote politics’ and labelling the AAP the BJP’s ‘B team’. “It is his vote politics. If he goes to Pakistan, he can also say I am Pakistani, so vote for me,” he said.

BJP leaders on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his purported inability to reduce pollution in the capital. They also claimed that after Diwali, the city’s air quality has improved.

BJP MP and former Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari said the city’s air quality index (AQI) levels were worse before Diwali. The AQI had improved after the festival, showing that Diwali is not to be blamed for pollution in Delhi, he said.

Before Diwali, the AQI was 330 and after Diwali this morning (Wednesday) it is 306. (This is) the benefits of bursting green crackers. So those who were blaming Diwali should now worry that if the pollution gets worse from now on then don’t blame it on Diwali,” Tiwari said in a tweet in Hindi on Wednesday.

Due to a favourable wind speed on Wednesday morning, Delhi’s air quality improved, but it was still considered “poor.”

At 10.10 am, the AQI was 255, down from 303 at 4 pm on Tuesday. On Monday, the day of Diwali, around 4 p.m., it was recorded at 312.

An AQI of 0 to 50 is regarded as “excellent,” 51 to 100 as “acceptable,” 101 to 200 as “moderate,” 201 to 300 as “poor,” 301 to 400 as “extremely poor,” and 401 to 500 as “severe.”

Parvesh Sahib Singh, a BJP member from West Delhi, sought Kejriwal’s resignation for his failure to manage pollution, on the other hand.

In response to social media images of pollution, Singh tweeted that Delhi’s AQI has fallen into the “extremely poor” level.

Party spokeswoman Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga responded to the same images by claiming Diwali and fireworks were not to blame for Delhi’s declining air quality.

The nearby cities of Ghaziabad (population: 262), Noida (population: 246), Greater Noida (196), Gurugram (population: 242), and Faridabad (population: 243) all have “moderate” to “poor” air quality.

In the past two years, Delhi and its surrounding areas have experienced severe air quality after Diwali, which is typically observed in November. Low temperatures and calm winds trap pollutants during the month of November, when stubble burning peaks.

The Supreme Court on Thursday denied a petition by BJP MP Manoj Tiwari that asked for an expedited hearing on a case that challenged the Delhi government’s complete ban on firecrackers.

“Let people breathe clean air… spend your money on sweets,” the apex court said.

The Delhi High Court declined to hear a plea earlier in the day that contested the Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s (DPCC) total ban on the sale and usage of all firecrackers, citing the ongoing Supreme Court cases involving firecrackers.

The petitioners had said the “last-minute ban” imposed by the DPCC on September 14 was arbitrary and illegal, and adversely affects their livelihood.

Gopal Rai, the environment minister for Delhi, stated the day before that manufacturing, keeping, and selling firecrackers in the nation’s capital is illegal and punishable by up to a $5,000 fine and three years in prison.

Additionally, purchasing and setting off firecrackers would result in a $200 fine and a six-month prison sentence.

These actions are intended to reduce air pollution during the festive season, when the quality of the air drastically declines.

The Supreme Court dismissed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Manoj Tiwari’s challenge to the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation case filed by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday.

The defamation case against BJP lawmaker Vijender Gupta was dismissed by a bench of justices SA Nazeer and V Ramasubramanian.

The BJP leaders challenged a trial court order summoning them and others as defendants in a criminal defamation case on November 28, 2019. Sisodia also filed a complaint against BJP leaders Hans Raj Hans Pravesh Verma, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and Harish Khurana, in addition to Tiwari and Gupta. The trial court issued summonses to all of them in 2019.

Sisodia filed the defamation complaint in response to their remarks at a press conference accusing him of misappropriating public funds worth 2,000 crore in the name of constructing classrooms in Delhi government schools.

On November 28, 2019, a Delhi court summoned them to stand trial in defamation proceedings under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The Delhi High Court refused to hear BJP leaders’ petitions to stay the summoning order in December 2020. The high court ruled that “sufficient grounds exist to proceed” against the BJP leaders.

Tiwari and Gupta filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, arguing that their statements were not defamatory. They claimed that the trial court’s summoning order was illegal because it was based on legally inadmissible evidence, and that a prior sanction was required before prosecuting them.
