High-Stakes Election for BJP, Congress, and Others

This election is critical for the BJP as it seeks a third straight term in office, while the Congress is banking on anti-incumbency and issues such as the farmer and wrestler protests to reclaim power. The main contesting parties include the BJP, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Additionally, there are two notable pre-poll alliances: the Indian National Lok Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party (INLD-BSP) and the Jannayak Janta Party-Azad Samaj Party (JJP-ASP).

Election Details

Voting is being held from 7 am to 6 pm, with 1,031 candidates competing for seats across 90 assembly constituencies. To accommodate voters, 20,632 polling booths have been established. The election results will be announced on October 8, along with those of Jammu and Kashmir.

Over 2 Crore Voters in Haryana

According to Haryana’s Chief Electoral Officer, Pankaj Agarwal, 2,03,54,350 voters are eligible to cast their ballots, including 1,07,75,957 males, 95,77,926 females, and 467 third-gender voters. To ensure security, 29,462 police personnel, 21,196 home guards, and 10,403 Special Police Officers (SPOs) have been deployed across the state. Surveillance has been tightened to maintain order and allow citizens to vote without fear.

Prominent Candidates and Alliances

Among the key figures in the election is wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who joined the Congress on September 6, along with fellow Olympian Bajrang Punia. Phogat became involved in politics after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics women’s 50 kg final.

The JJP-ASP alliance is contesting all 90 constituencies, with JJP fielding candidates in 70 seats and ASP in 20. In the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections, the BJP won 40 out of 90 seats and formed a coalition government with the JJP, which secured 10 seats. The Congress won 31 seats in that election, though the JJP later exited the coalition.

Union Minister Manohar Lal to chair Bengal BJP stock-taking meet

Union Minister and former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal will chair the Bengal BJP’s extended state committee meeting here on Wednesday to outline the party’s political strategy in the State in the wake of its poor performance in the general election and July 10 by-polls.

A source said Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had initially been scheduled to chair the meeting, but it was cancelled as he is unwell. Singh was discharged from AIIMS Delhi on Saturday and informed Bengal BJP leaders of his inability to chair the meeting.

The two-day state executive meeting will start on Tuesday at the Science City auditorium, where BJP office-bearers will discuss issues with district leadership. The decision-making process regarding the party’s next course of action will be held on Wednesday in the presence of Khattar, Union minister of Housing, Urban Affairs and Power.

The Bengal BJP has been on the back foot since the party won only 12 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls — six fewer than in the 2019 general elections — prompting many BJP leaders to accuse the current state leadership of failing to retain the party’s organisational strength that was built since 2017-18.

A state BJP leader said the meeting would be significant as the party had called all district presidents, general secretaries, observers of Lok Sabha and Assembly segments, and mandal presidents in Calcutta to analyse the party’s failure and outline its next strategy.

“Around 3,000 party leaders from across Bengal will be present at the meeting. Once the extended committee meetings in all 30 States are done, a national-level meeting will be organised in Delhi, where all State general secretaries and party’s Lok Sabha observers will be present,” said a source in the BJP.

The meeting is important as the BJP has elevated the Bengal state president and Balurghat MP Sukanta Majumdar to a junior Union Minister, indicating that the party will replace him with a new face to lead the 2026 Assembly election campaign. Multiple sources said the party is yet to find a replacement for Majumdar amid speculation that it might appoint a woman as the state president.

A large section of BJP leaders in both Calcutta and districts have demanded the reappointment of former state president Dilip Ghosh, who was instrumental in the BJP’s rise in the State and the party’s win of 18 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

“Everyone knows how factional feuds resulted in Dilip Ghosh’s shift to contest the election in the Bardhaman-Durgapur seat from his constituency Midnapore. The central leadership should address such divisions within the party if they want to see better performance in Bengal,” said a BJP leader.

Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday, convened a meeting with BJP leaders and workers in Haryana to discuss preparations for the upcoming 2024 Assembly elections.

After the meeting, the former Haryana Chief Minister told reporters in Karnal, “…The preparations are going on for the Vidhan Sabha elections. The party workers are excited. The lies told by Congress will not work in the next elections. The tactics that they (the Congress) have used in the Lok Sabha elections will not work anymore…”

On senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visit to Hathras and not Tamil Nadu, the senior BJP leader said, “I have heard his statements in the Lok Sabha. I am surprised that such words pop up in his mouth. Is the entire Hindu society violent?. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, both BJP and Congress secured 5 seats each in the state, with BJP achieving a vote share of 46.11% and Congress obtaining 43.67%. Khattar, who is contesting from Haryana’s Karnal seat, expressed confidence, stating that the Congress candidate, Divyanshu Budhiraja, posed no challenge to him. “I have cast my vote. Details of the Sixth Phase

A total of 58 constituencies from six states and two union territories were set for polls in the sixth phase, with over 11.13 crore voters deciding the fate of 889 candidates, including two former Chief Ministers: Manohar Lal Khattar (BJP candidate from Karnal) and Mehbooba Mufti (PDP nominee from Anantnag-Rajouri).

The constituencies in this phase included eight seats in Bihar, all 10 seats in Haryana, one seat in Jammu and Kashmir, four in Jharkhand, all seven seats in Delhi, six in Odisha, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, and eight in West Bengal.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the voters included 5.84 crore males, 5.29 crore females, and 5,120 third-gender electors. Additionally, there were over 8.93 lakh registered voters aged 85 and above, 23,659 voters above 100 years, and 9.58 lakh PwD (Persons with Disabilities) voters, who had the option to vote from home. The ECI stated that around 11.4 lakh polling officials would facilitate the voting process across 1.14 lakh polling stations.

Responding to Dushyant Chautala’s call for a floor test following the withdrawal of support from three independent MLAs to Nayab Saini’s BJP-led government, former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar stated on Thursday that the opposition’s estimations lack clarity, and he doesn’t anticipate a motion of no-confidence being proposed in the near future. Khattar asserted that conducting a floor test wouldn’t affect the BJP government significantly, citing the support of numerous JJP MLAs for the BJP.

“The opposition is doing vague calculations. During the floor test, if they can retain even 23 of their MLAs, it will be a big deal… I don’t see any no-confidence motion being moved anytime soon, but if any such situation arises, we will have a floor test… Many JJP MLAs have given support to BJP. This is what I’m saying, they need to think beyond what meets the eye,” he said.

On Thursday, Dushyant Chautala, former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) leader, penned a letter to Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, urging a floor test. This request follows the withdrawal of support from three Independent MLAs—Randhir Golan from Pundri, Dharmpal Gonder from Nilokheri, and Sombir Singh Sangwan from Charkhi Dadri—from the Nayab Saini government on May 7, all of whom have opted to back the Congress.

On Wednesday, the Congress called for President’s rule and fresh elections in Haryana after these Independent MLAs withdrew their support from Nayab Saini’s BJP government and pledged allegiance to their party.

These events unfolded amidst the Lok Sabha elections and within two months of Nayab Singh Saini taking charge as Chief Minister, succeeding Manohar Lal Khattar.

In the 90-member House, the BJP holds 39 seats, Congress 30, Jan Nayak Janata Party 10, Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) 1, and Indian National Lok Dal 1, along with seven Independents. Initially with 41 MLAs, the BJP’s tally reduced to 39 after two MLAs resigned from Karnal and Rania seats. Previously, six out of seven Independent MLAs supported the BJP, but with three withdrawing their support, the BJP currently has backing from three Independents and one HLP MLA, totaling 43 MLAs.

Regarding the state’s 10 Lok Sabha seats, they are scheduled for polling on May 25.

Haryana CM, Former CM Submit Nomination Papers From Karnal

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and former CM Manohar Lal Khattar submitted their nomination papers on Monday. Khattar, representing the BJP, is contesting the Karnal Lok Sabha seat, with Saini accompanying him during the filing.

Saini, meanwhile, is participating in the assembly bypoll for Karnal, the seat vacated by Khattar for him. Khattar, in turn, is vying for the Karnal Lok Sabha constituency this time. Saini’s continuation as CM hinges on contesting and winning the Assembly by-election.

The Karnal Lok Sabha constituency consists of nine assembly segments. The remaining three assembly segments, Assandh, Israna, and Samalkha, are represented by Congress.

“We will win 10 out of 10 seats in Haryana and will also win the 11th seat by-election which is being held in Karnal,” said the Chief Minister.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in the state, the BJP achieved a clean sweep, securing all 10 seats, with the Karnal Lok Sabha seat witnessing a voter turnout of 68.31 percent. The BJP’s candidate, Sanjay Bhatia, secured a significant victory, winning by a margin of over 6 lakh votes in the previous Lok Sabha election.

In the 2014 elections, the BJP won 7 seats, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) secured 2 seats, and the Congress managed to secure only one seat. Ashwini Kumar, representing the BJP, had also won from the Karnal Lok Sabha seat in the 2014 elections.

The Lok Sabha elections for Haryana’s 10 parliamentary constituencies are scheduled to take place in a single phase on May 25th. Arvind Kumar Sharma, who previously won Karnal twice in 2009 and 2004 as a Congress candidate, is now contesting as a BJP candidate from Rohtak against Congress’ Deepender Singh Hooda.

CBI investigation to be ordered into murder of INLD’s Haryana chief Nafe Singh Rathee, : Home Minister Anil Vij

The Haryana government, as announced by state Home Minister Anil Vij in the assembly, is set to initiate a CBI investigation into the killing of INLD’s Haryana chief Nafe Singh Rathee. In the assembly, Vij was quoted as saying, “If the House is only satisfied with a CBI probe, then I assure the members that we will hand over the case to the CBI.”

The former MLA Rathee and a party worker were fatally shot by unidentified assailants in Jhajjar on Sunday, while traveling in their SUV in Bahadurgarh town. Additionally, three private gunmen hired by Rathee for security also sustained injuries in the attack.

In response to the opposition Congress raising concerns about Rathee’s murder during the assembly session, the Haryana assembly speaker admitted an adjournment motion on law and order. The slain INLD leader’s nephew, Kapoor, affirmed, “We will not conduct a post-mortem until the accused are arrested. We have again gotten the names of those people.”

10 dead, toll may increase, says Haryana CM Khattar as conducts aerial survey of rain-affected areas

As many as ten people have died as a result of floods in Haryana caused by the state’s persistent rains, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Wednesday, adding that the death toll could rise.

The Chief Minister also offered an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the family of flood victims. “Around 10 people have died in the floods so far, but the number may increase, 2 are missing, and many cattle have died…assessment of the losses will be done. Rs 4 lakhs ex-gratia to be given to kin of dead…”, Khattar said.

Khattar was speaking at a press conference here after undertaking an airborne reconnaissance of the state’s rain-stricken districts.

“For the last four days, the incessant rainfall not only in Haryana but in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab has led to flood situations in some districts of the state,” Khattar said during the press briefing.

He further added, “A total of 40 villages are flooded heavily…we’re doing all the work, wherever we needed help, we have called National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Army to those places …we’re doing everything we can.”

Haryana CM takes jibe at kejriwal ahead of MCD polls: ‘…owner of Delhi’

Ahead of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections next week, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday poked fun at his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) opponent and leader, Arvind Kejriwal, in Delhi.

Kejriwal “considers himself as the owner of Delhi,” the BJP leader said in a fresh dig. In his address at a public rally in the national capital, where he was present to support the BJP nominees in the MCD elections – Khattar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI: “Arvind Kejriwal considers himself as the owner of Delhi, unlike our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who thinks of himself as a servant of this nation.”

On Saturday, Khattar spoke at three rallies that were held back-to-back in the Delhi neighbourhoods of Krishna Nagar, Shahdara, and Rajendra Nagar.

The national capital’s civic elections are slated for December 4, and the results will be tallied on December 7. The AAP has 492 nominees, followed by 507 independents, who make up the biggest percentage of the overall nominations. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), 31 from the JD-U, 20 from AIMIM, and nine from the CPI have each fielded candidates in addition to the 423 candidates fielded by the BJP, which is now in charge of the civic body (M).

AAP was also criticised earlier on Saturday by Union Minister Anurag Thakur, who charged that the party’s leaders were involved in fraud and corruption.

All AAP ministers are not only involved in serious allegations of corruption but also jailed. This shows that his (AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s) politics is only about corruption, liquor, and scams,” Thakur said.

Panchkula: J.P. Nadda chairs meeting with BJP’s state office bearers, district president

Bharatiya Janata Party national president J.P. Nadda chaired a meeting with the party’s state office bearers and district president at PWD Rest House in Panchkula on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the meeting was attended by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala along with the leaders of BJP and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP).

Earlier on Friday, a meeting with the Booth Number 26 workers was held by J.P. Nadda to empower the booth committee of the party in Panchkula.

Moreover, with the party workers, Nadda had comprehensive discussions and the meeting was attended by Booth President Poonam Sharma.

The meeting was also attended by BJP state president Om Prakash Dhankad, state-in-charge Vinod Tawde, MP Ratan Lal Katariya, National spokesperson RP Singh, district in-charge Sanjay Sharma, District President Ajay Sharma, Mandal President Yuvraj Kaushik, and Shakti Kendra head, Suresh Verma.

Furthermore, ahead of Assembly polls in the state, JP Nadda was on a two-day visit to Tripura where he lauded the development of Tripura under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Addressing a press conference Nadda also slammed CPM and said, “CPM’s rule of 35 years hasn’t done anything for women, ignored tribal, exploited youths. They encouraged terrorism and infiltration. The insurgency was at its peak and drug smuggling was a thriving business.”

However, on 29 August at Tripura University Nadda paid floral tributes to the statue of Dr. Shyamaprasad and Deendayal Upadhyaya. Nadda also offered prayers at the Matabari Temple in Udaipur.

“We’ve sent the confidential report to Haryana CM”; says Goa CM

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant sent the confidential report to the chief minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar on Monday. The charge sheet would be filed soon.

“We’ve sent the confidential report to Haryana CM. I am satisfied with the investigation done by our police team. Five people have been arrested. Soon charge sheet will be filed,” Goa CM Sawant said.

Earlier on 23 August, the Curlies Beach Shack in Anjuna was sealed after the death of BJP leader Sonali Phogat. “We have been given instructions to seal it. So as per DGP’s instructions, it has been sealed,” CM Sawant said.

Meanwhile on Monday CM Sawant said if the need arises then the case will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

BJP Leader Phogat passed away on 23 August in Goa. At the St Anthony Hospital at Anjuna in North, Goa Phogat was declared dead. A blunt force injury was reported on her body in a post-mortem report.

Moreover, on Friday, Sonali Phogat’s PA Sudhir Sangwan, and his aide Sukhwinder Singh was arrested in connection with the alleged murder by Goa police.

However, two more persons Edwin Nunes and suspected drug peddler Dattprashad Gaonkar were also arrested by Goa Police on Saturday.

Punjab must give up its stubborn attitude over SYL issue: Haryana CM

Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday said that Punjab will have to give up its stubbornness over the issue of the Satluj Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) as, in a democratic country, states cannot run arbitrarily. He also hoped that Haryana will get its rightful share of water.

Addressing a Jal Adhikar Rally at ITI ground in Narnaul, the chief minister said that the SYL case has been pending for decades. As soon as the present government had been formed, a plea to hear the matter ahead of time had been made, after which the Supreme Court had ruled in favour of Haryana. The court had asked the chief ministers of the two states to sit down and decide, but Punjab had not agreed to give Haryana its rightful share.

He further said, “In a democracy, there is a way to protest. Protests can be made before the House and the media or by gathering democratically.”

On the occasion, Khattar also spoke on the ongoing agitation against the farm laws and assured farmers that he would leave politics if there was any kind of threat to the Minimum Support Price (MSP). He said that the government is thinking beyond the MSP through the new agricultural laws but that the MSP will continue like before. Similarly, mandis will continue to function, he added.

He said that some people are agitating politically and are not farmer-friendly. “We should talk about SYL water with the farmers of Punjab sitting on the border,” he added.

The Haryana CM further said that all three agricultural laws are for the benefit of farmers. “This will free the farmers from bondage,” he said, adding that the government will procure crops from farmers in the mandis at MSP, but if the farmer wants to sell it outside at a higher price, he will have complete freedom to do so. In addition, these new laws also aim to improve the storage system, he said.
