Asia’s Largest Mandi in Delhi Stops Turkish Apple Imports Over Pakistan Support

Azadpur Mandi, the largest wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Asia, has said it will stop importing apples from Turkey due to persistent diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

“We have decided to stop all fresh imports of apples from Turkey. Although consignments booked earlier will continue to arrive, no more trade in apples or other vegetables will happen in the future,” confirmed Meetha Ram Kriplani, chairman of the Azadpur Fruit Mandi.

Kriplani mentioned that the decision was taken after a deep analysis of the prevailing geopolitical situation. “We have long supported Turkish trade, but the prevailing situation has left us with no option,” he further said.

Turkish apples were long a priority at Azadpur, with imports hitting 1.16 lakh tonnes in 2024. But Kriplani mentioned that recent statements and actions by Turkey against India have disillusioned the traders.

The decision represents a major shift in the mandi’s procurement strategy. Kriplani said the market is now seeking alternative countries to fulfill its apple supply needs in the coming months.

Protests broke out in Delhi meanwhile as many trader bodies called for a ban on Turkish product import and marketing. “Turkey’s latest political attitude towards India is not acceptable and has been detrimental to national feelings,” a joint statement by Delhi trader bodies stated.

“I know this statement could be controversial, but the three farm laws should be brought back. Farmers should request their return for their own good,” Ranaut remarked, acknowledging the potential backlash yet standing firm in her position.
Her comments come amid heated election campaigning in Haryana, a state that was at the forefront of the 2020-21 protests against these laws, which were eventually withdrawn by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following nationwide agitations.
Ranaut’s statement may add fresh fuel to the fire in the poll-bound Haryana as her comments triggered an immediate political backlash, particularly from the Congress, which led the opposition to the farm laws during the protests. Taking to social media, Congress party condemned her remarks, accusing the BJP of attempting to revive policies that had led to widespread discontent among farmers.

The Congress party slammed Ranaut and the BJP for entertaining the notion of bringing back the farm laws. On X (formerly Twitter), the party reminded the public of the immense sacrifices made by farmers during the protests, during which more than 750 farmers reportedly lost their lives.

“Over 750 farmers became martyrs fighting to get these black laws repealed. It took their sacrifices to wake the Modi government up. Now, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut is calling for their return. Let it be clear – these black laws will never return, no matter how much the BJP tries,” the Congress stated.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate echoed this sentiment, pledging that the party would not allow the laws to be reintroduced under any circumstances. “We will never let this happen. Haryana will be the first to answer in the upcoming elections,” she warned, turning the issue into a key election talking point. Ranaut, who has long been a vocal supporter of the BJP and a critic of the farmer protests, has often courted controversy with her remarks.

The three farm laws in question – The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 – were introduced with the aim of liberalising agricultural markets by allowing farmers to sell outside government-regulated mandis, engage in contract farming, and ease restrictions on stockpiling.

The Modi government argued that the reforms would increase farmers’ incomes by giving them more freedom. However, farmers, especially from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, feared that the laws would lead to corporate exploitation and dismantle the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system. This fear triggered year-long protests, with thousands of farmers camping at the borders of Delhi, demanding the complete repeal of the laws.

Kangana Ranaut, the BJP contender for the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency, attributed her initiation into electoral politics to the support of the Mandi populace as she officially submitted her nomination papers. Alongside her were her mother and sister, accompanying her during the filing process.

Kangana expressed that the affection of Mandi’s residents had drawn her back to her native state, stating her aspiration to establish herself in politics akin to her achievements in the film industry.

“The people of Mandi and their love for me have brought me here. Women in our country are making a mark in every field but incidents of feticide in Mandi were high a few years ago. Today, the women from Mandi are in the Army, the field of education and politics,” said Kangana

When asked about Congress, she said “The anti-national mentality of the Congress party is a matter of concern for the country…”
Kangana’s mother Asha Ranaut who accompanied her said, “The public have come here to support Kangana. We will definitely win. She has done a lot of work for the people and will do so in future too…”

As confirmed by the state chief of the Congress Pratibha Singh who is also her son, she said “ A consensus has been reached on name of Vikramaditya (Singh) for the mandi constituency. The names will be finalised soon.”

She further said that “Discussions were held on the 2-3 names that we shortlisted… It depends on the high command, on Mallikarjun Kharge, and on what names they approve. All our senior leaders believe that this time a young leader should be fielded.”

Talking about his candidature, she also said that the “people of Mandi have “always been with us.”

Meanwhile Kangana Ranaut on Thursday criticised Vikramaditya Singh and said he cannot threaten her and send her away as the state is not his ancestor’s property in response to comments about her consumption of beef in the past.

While the Himachal minister on the other hand took a jibe at kangana and said “ I pray to Lord Ram to give her wisdom and hope she goes back pure from ‘Dev Bhoomi’ Himachal to Bollywood because she will not win the elections as she knows nothing about people of Himachal.”

He further said that she should talk about the issues possessed by the state and in relation to the Mandi. He also said has she ever visited Manali for one day during worst monsoon crisis plaguing the place. And also said he was there on ground zero during the time of the disaster.

Slamming Kangana he also said “The people of Himachal have nothing to do with what you eat and what you drink in Mumbai. Please talk on issues, your vision, what you did during the disaster and what your role will be in the future.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kangana Ranaut slammed the Congress on Saturday, accusing the ruling party in the state of “looting” the people and enticing them with “false” promises.

Addressing a gathering in Mandi district, Ranaut said, “Other than looting, what else is the Congress doing here? Today I want to ask them if they would give Rs 1,500 to all the sisters and mothers here. What happened to that money? They said they would give 5 lakh job opportunities. Where are those jobs? Why do they make fake promises and lure people? Till when will such politics go on?”

“We must wake our Himachal people and protect them against the false promises of Congress. Do not fall into the trap of these false promises. We have to walk step by step with the idea of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘New Bharat’,” said Ranaut.

Earlier on Wednesday, in response to Congress leader Digvijay Singh’s statements questioning “who lives there” on Katchatheevu Island, Kangana Ranaut stated people will give a befitting reply to such parties who have this mindset.

Kangana Ranaut remarked that because of such a mindset, development could not occur in the remote areas of the country during the Congress’s tenure.

Earlier, Digvijay Singh on Katchatheevu Island said,” Does anyone live there? This is utter nonsense. PM Modi talks baseless.”

“The decades-old territorial and fishing rights dispute around Katchatheevu Island is in the limelight ahead of the general elections, with the BJP and the opposition engaged in a war of words over the issue.”

Earlier this month, the actor, now engaged in politics, expressed her solidarity with Hema, denouncing remarks she characterized as sexist and misogynistic made by Congress leader Randeep Surjewala.

Kangana commended Hema for her lifelong dedication to the arts and condemned such remarks as unacceptable. Kangana Ranaut has been nominated as a candidate from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, a Congress stronghold.

Himachal: Air Force copters carry essential items to remote areas of Mandi

On Friday, the rain-soaked Mandi district received a shipment of food items and medications thanks to the assistance of Air Force helicopters. Helicopters from the Air Force are used by the Mandi District Administration to access the district’s remote areas. The administrative officers had emergency supplies such as food, medicine, and other items with them. AAP likely to declare its 5th guarantee in HP CM’s home turf Mandi

Bhagwant Mann and Manish Sisodia, leaders of the AAP, are anticipated to make public the party’s fifth pre-election assurance on Friday in chief minister Jai Ram Thakur’s hometown area of Mandi ahead of the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections.

The chief ministers of Delhi and Punjab will both be speaking at a public rally in Mandi, according to state AAP spokesman Gaurav Sharma.

The party’s sixth pre-election promise is probably one for workers.
