</excerpt>

Bengal BJP appointed Samik Bhattacharya as president, signalling shift from hardline to moderate stance.

Kolkata: On Thursday afternoon, by the time BJP Central Observer Ravi Shankar Prasad stood up to announce the new Bengal BJP president’s name, the party’s rank and file already knew a course correction was underway. From now on, the strident anti-Muslim stance espoused by leaders like Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu Adhikari would be replaced by the moderation of the new incumbent – Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya – known for his eloquence.

The selection — though conducted through the democratic process of filing nominations and having provisions for voting — remained a one-horse race, with Bhattacharya the sole candidate to file nomination papers. His two proposers were outgoing chief Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari.

For the faction-ridden state BJP, this was a clear message: to succeed in the 2026 Assembly elections, the party must present a united front against the well-entrenched, well-oiled, resource-rich, and unscrupulous Trinamool Congress.

The BJP central leadership’s preferences became clear when news broke of Bhattacharya’s sudden official visit to BJP national president J.P. Nadda’s residence in Delhi on Monday.
Bhattacharya met Nadda alongside senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, who was overseeing the Bengal presidential election process, even amid speculation that Sukanta Majumdar was eyeing a second term while Suvendu Adhikari was lobbying for MLA Agnimitra Paul as state president. The name of BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato was also in circulation.

However, the BJP has placed its bet on the soft-spoken RSS loyalist and party veteran to steer its troubled state unit out of prolonged internal discord, grassroots disarray, and a “cultural disconnect” with the Bengali electorate.

The TMC has long accused the BJP of promoting a ‘Hindi-Hindu-Hindustan’ model, out of sync with Bengal’s cultural ethos.

Since its 77-seat performance in the 2021 polls, BJP’s support has steadily eroded. The 2023 rural elections and recent bypolls highlighted the party’s organisational decay, especially in rural and tribal belts.

“There’s an urgent need to activate the booth-level structure. Workers feel disillusioned. Leaders need to spend time in districts to reconnect with cadres,” said a senior BJP leader.
Bhattacharya, 61, previously served as MLA from Basirhat Dakshin and was the official state spokesperson.

As Bhattacharya, a quintessential Bengali ‘bhadralok,’ takes charge, a key challenge will be whether the state BJP under his leadership pursues a moderate, inclusive Hindutva line or continues the combative, hardline posture championed by leaders like Adhikari.

An office bearer of the state unit said, “Bhattacharya has remained largely above intra-party groups, is articulate, media-savvy, and has no visible opposition within the organisation.”

Another leader added, “With internal rifts between powerful lobbies peaking, someone like Samik could be a unifying force.”

However, political observers remain divided on Bhattacharya’s prospects: some see him as a unifying leader acceptable across factions, while others question his ability to mobilise mass support.

In a marathon speech soon after his appointment, Bhattacharya made it clear that the fight with the TMC would be long and hard.

He lashed out at the Mamata Banerjee government, saying, “The BJP is set to form the government in the state in 2026. People voted out the dominant Left Front government through the ballot. I would like to remind Mamata Banerjee that voters speak the last word in a democracy.”

“There is no force in the world that can ensure Mamata Banerjee a fourth term in power. The Trinamool Congress is certainly losing the upcoming Assembly elections,” the new BJP state chief thundered.

He also appealed to the Left and Congress not to divide opposition votes and help the TMC.
“I would appeal to the Left and Congress to not allow TMC to come to power through backdoors by dividing opposition votes.”

Bhattacharya also sent a message to bridge the gap between the old guard and new entrants in the party.

</excerpt>

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on June 26, launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission (EC), alleging that its new guidelines for electoral roll verification amounted to a covert implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), with her state as the primary target. She claimed the electoral body was acting as a “stooge of the BJP.”
Speaking from Digha in Purba Medinipur, where she was overseeing preparations for the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Banerjee said she had received two lengthy letters from the EC, each spanning 25–30 pages.
Although she had not examined them fully, she said a cursory glance revealed that the Commission was now demanding a declaration form — Annexure D — from voters born between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004. This form, she alleged, requires submission of both parents’ birth certificates as proof of citizenship.
Calling the move a “scam,” Banerjee questioned the logic behind targeting those born within this specific window.
“What is the rationale behind selecting these dates? Why isolate voters born after 1987? This is more dangerous than the NRC and must be resisted by all opposition parties,” she declared.
According to EC sources, the new guidelines are part of a special intensive revision of electoral rolls, set to begin in Bihar ahead of Assembly elections later this year. Under the new rules, voters registered before 2003 will not be required to furnish additional documents. However, those registered after 2003 must submit proof of identity and citizenship. The process includes door-to-door verification across the country, and in some states, the 2004 roll will serve as the baseline.
Banerjee expressed concern that the rollout in Bihar — where elections are imminent and the BJP is in power — is a diversionary tactic.
“They will not touch Bihar. The real target is Bengal, which heads to polls next year,” she said.
“This exercise is meant to disenfranchise young and vulnerable voters — particularly migrant workers, students, villagers, and the uneducated — who may struggle to procure their parents’ documents.”
She alleged that valid voters’ names were being arbitrarily deleted at the behest of the BJP.
“The names get cancelled at the last moment on the BJP’s instructions,” she claimed.
“The EC is helping them (BJP) capture Bengal using agencies and manipulation.”
Banerjee voiced deep suspicion over the EC’s impartiality, accusing it of functioning as an extension of the Union Home Ministry. She directly targeted Home Minister Amit Shah, saying,
“Modiji is the Prime Minister. I respect the chair. But Amit Shah is running the country. The current Chief Election Commissioner was his Secretary in the Cooperation Ministry.”
Sending a strong message to political opponents and civil society, Banerjee said the TMC would be the first line of resistance against what she described as “Emergency weapons being handed to the BJP.” She urged all opposition parties to unite and reject the guidelines.
“The EC cannot act unilaterally. We live in a federal democracy. Political parties and elected governments are not bonded labourers. The EC must consult all recognised parties before implementing such sweeping changes,” she asserted.
The West Bengal Chief Minister also questioned the long-term intent behind the voter documentation drive.
“How will poor people produce their parents’ birth certificates? This is a backdoor NRC. Let the Commission come clean on its intention,” she said.
“Even in Assam, the NRC took six years and is still not accepted as a final list.”
She cited past incidents to underscore her mistrust. In February this year, she had flagged cases of duplicate voter identity cards in Bengal matching those from states like Rajasthan and Haryana. The party raised the issue with the EC, which later admitted to flaws in the electoral rolls.
“Now they ask us to provide details of booth-level workers. Why should I reveal their identities to the Commission?” she asked.
Critics across the political spectrum are beginning to echo her concerns. CPI (ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh
Kumar, warning that the current revision exercise mirrors the scale and nature of the Assam NRC, which failed to conclusively resolve citizenship disputes.
Banerjee also raised alarm over the potential detention of voters who may fail to meet the documentation criteria.
“Those who are studying or working outside must ensure their names remain on the rolls till the day of polling. I’ve been told that 100 migrant workers from Bengal have been detained in Odisha’s Cuttack. Some are held in Balasore police station. Why are these incidents happening every day?” she asked.
Urging voters to remain vigilant, Banerjee warned that disenfranchising citizens under the pretext of document verification would eventually “backfire on the BJP.” She concluded with a message of defiance, “We are not opposed to a fair revision of the voter list. But we will not allow the disenfranchisement of genuine voters through such dubious methods.”

</excerpt>

This comes after the Calcutta HC struck down the previous list saying religion appears to have been the sole criterion.

KOLKATA: With the West Bengal Assembly elections due in about eight months, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Mamata Banerjee has moved swiftly to consolidate its core Muslim vote bank by unveiling a new list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

This comes after the Calcutta High Court struck down the previous list, observing that “religion appears to have been the sole criterion” for granting OBC status. On Tuesday, Banerjee tabled the revised OBC-A and OBC-B lists in the Assembly, adding 76 new groups and taking the total to 140. Of these, 80 communities are Muslim.

The lists were adopted with lightning speed, despite protests from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Announcing the move, Banerjee said the issuance of OBC certificates for college admissions and government jobs would resume immediately. “Many recruitment boards had put the process on hold due to legal confusion. That will now be resolved,” she said, adding, “Backwardness, not religion, was the sole criterion in the fresh OBC survey.”

The BJP, however, alleged that the new list suffers from the same flaw as the previous one—being skewed in favour of Muslims. West Bengal’s Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called the move “appeasement politics” and claimed that “OBC” in Bengal now stands for “One-Sided Beneficiary.” He pointed out that prior to 2010, only 11 of the 66 OBC groups were Muslim. This development comes even as the Supreme Court is hearing the state government’s appeal against the High Court’s earlier order, which had invalidated around five lakh OBC certificates.

The state informed the apex court that it would complete its fresh OBC survey by the end of June. According to the government, the 76 new groups were included based on recommendations from the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes. Of these, 51 were added to OBC-A (which includes the “more backward” groups) and 25 to OBC-B. Presenting the commission’s report, the Chief Minister said, “Some quarters are claiming the government is granting reservations on the basis of religion, which is baseless. We have made the new OBC-A and OBC-B lists on the basis of a scientific benchmark survey.

There is no question of using religion as a basis.” Countering Adhikari’s allegations, the TMC said in a statement, “Suvendu Adhikari, we all know that ‘divide and rule’ is the official policy of the BJP. Your only agenda for the 2026 elections is to pit Hindus against Muslims. But CM Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that backwardness, not religion, is the sole criterion for OBC status.”

Last year, the Calcutta High Court had struck down 113 names from the state’s OBC list, retaining 66. Of the scrapped 113, 76 have now been reintroduced, while two from the retained list have been removed. Applications from other communities are pending. During court proceedings, it was alleged that the inclusion of Muslim sub-castes was “based purely on religion,” with categorisation lacking credible data and the survey being “unscientific and prefabricated.” On May 22, 2024, the court ruled that the additions were primarily based on religion. Citing the 1992 Supreme Court judgment in Indra Sawhney v Union of India, it emphasised that OBC identification must be based on objective criteria established by a Backward Classes Commission.

The court noted that between 2010 and 2012, recommendations by the state commission were made with “lightning speed,” without applying any such objective criteria. It observed that the reports appeared designed to conceal religion-based selections and declared that the community had been “treated as a commodity for political ends.” It also invalidated parts of the 2012 Act that allowed sub-categorisation into OBC-A and OBCB without sufficient data, noting that such classification must be grounded in empirical evidence collected by the commission.

The High Court verdict came during the Lok Sabha election campaign, with the BJP accusing the ruling TMC of diverting reservation benefits from Hindus to Muslims. Even as the Supreme Court prepares to hear the challenge next month, the Mamata Banerjee government hopes to neutralise the controversy with its revised OBC list, asserting that this time, it’s driven by data, not religion.

</excerpt>

The Mamata Banerjee government is bristling at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to shift the IPL final and a play- off match from Kolkata to Ahmedabad, in contravention of conventions that dictate that the final is played at the home city of last year’s winners.

The playoff match is scheduled for June 1, and the final on June 3. Aroop Biswas, West Ben- gal Sports Minister and a close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Thursday accused the BJP of engaging in “cheap poli- tics” following the BCCI’s decision to relocate an IPL playoff match and the final away from Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. Addressing a press conference along with Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, Biswas expressed displeasure over the revised schedule, which he said has “deprived” Kolkata of hosting the IPL final.

The final has been shifted to Ahmedabad, while the Mullanpur Stadium in Punjab will host one playoff match. Aroop Biswas pointed to discrepancies between the reasons cited by a BJP leader and the BCCI. “BJP leader and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar posted on X that the matches have been shifted due to law and order problems.

The BCCI and IPL’s governing body have claimed that a new venue for the playoff match and final has been decided based on the weather’s condition. Who is telling the truth – BJP or BCCI? It is totally a politically motivated decision,” he said.

Biswas refuted claims of law and order issues or adverse weather conditions as reasons for the shift, calling them “lame excuses” He added: “100 percent of matches in Kolkata have been played without a single incident.” City police commissioner Manoj Verma said: “Nine matches were scheduled to be played in Kolkata. A post on X pointed out that the match has been shifted due to law and order issues.

As the Commissioner of Police, I am here to say that seven matches have been played here, no incident has been reported. These matches saw a footfall of more than 60,000.” Verma claimed that neither the general public nor organizers had raised any concerns about law and order. He also noted that the BCCI’s official communication did not cite law and order as a reason for the change, suggesting “there could be another intention”.

He recalled one instance during Ram Navami when a match date was rescheduled—from May 6 to May 8—so it could be played in Kolkata. “It shows there is no problem related to law and order in the city,” he said.

Biswas further challenged the weather-related justification, presenting documents indicating that specific weather forecasts for Kolkata between May 20-30 would only be available after May 14, and forecasts for June 1-4 only after May 26. “No forecast has been issued for the first week of June in 2025 in the public domain. Since when did the BCCI become a weather expert?” “We register our protest. The CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal) should have raised their voice against it,” Biswas said, adding: “It is the IPL’s rule that last year’s champions’ home ground will host the final. But now there is an unwritten rule that the finals will be played in Ahmedabad. In the last four years, the finals have been played at the Ahmedabad stadium thrice.”

</excerpt>

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), supports the Central Government’s stance on foreign policy and its fight against terrorism. However, she criticised the Centre for including a TMC MP in a multi-party diplomatic delegation without consulting her party first.

TMC Didn’t Boycott the Anti-Terror Delegation

Banerjee stressed that her party had not boycotted the Centre’s multi-party mission that aims to fight Pakistan-backed terrorism and promote Operation Sindoor. Instead, she objected to how the delegation list was formed.

“They (Centre) cannot decide the name. If they request the mother party, the party will decide the name. This is the customary; this is the system. We are with the Central Govt regarding external affairs policy and we are fully supporting them…” she said, referring to the inclusion of TMC MP Yusuf Pathan in the list without consultation.

Mamata Says Centre Skipped the Courtesy of Request

Banerjee also said the Centre didn’t reach out to her party before announcing the list. According to her, if they had made a formal request, TMC would have considered sending a representative.

“No request came to us. If a request came to us, then we could consider. We are in favour of the country. In the external affairs issue, we have always supported the policy of the Centre. At present, we are supporting the Central Govt’s views and actions. They cannot decide the member’s name on their own. It is not their choice, it is the choice of the party. If they requested me to send someone, we will decide the name and tell them. It is not that we are boycotting or that we are not going,” she explained.

Abhishek Banerjee Reiterates Support, Seeks Respect for Protocol

Earlier in the day, TMC General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee also addressed the matter. He assured that the party stands united with the Centre in the fight against terrorism but highlighted that the Union Government must respect party autonomy.

“I don’t know from where you got this information. I am saying this very clearly: whatever decision the Union Government takes, which aims at combating terrorism to protect the national interest of the country, TMC will stand with the Centre shoulder to shoulder,” he said.

He continued, “We do not have a problem with any delegation going… Which member of our party will go in the delegation is the decision of my party. The Centre or the Union Government cannot decide who will go from which party unilaterally… Which member of TMC, DMK, Congress, AAP and Samajwadi Party will go in the delegation should be decided by the party itself.”

About the Multi-Party Delegation

The Centre has formed a multi-party delegation consisting of seven groups. Each group includes 8–9 MPs and has one designated leader. The mission is aimed at countering international misinformation and highlighting India’s firm stand against terrorism.

Making a statement at a press conference held at the State Secretariat, Banerjee said, “We are one in the battle against terrorism. There must not be any splits among us.” She underlined national solidarity, stating that West Bengal is “shoulder to shoulder” with the Union government in the war against terror.

The Trinamool Congress chief had already welcomed the armed intervention, hoisting patriotic slogans such as “Jai Hind! Jai India!”

The Chief Minister emphasised keeping people calm during the meeting and called on the media to provide only confirmed information and not indulge in panic-spreading reports.

</excerpt>

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday. It blamed her for the widespread corruption in the state’s school recruitment process.

During a press briefing, BJP leader Sambit Patra warned of strict legal consequences. He declared, “Didi jail jayengi, albat jayengi. Hindustan mai kanoon ka shasan hai. The day BJP forms a government in Bengal, the full force of the law will be brought upon Mamata Banerjee.”

Supreme Court Upholds Calcutta HC Verdict

Earlier, the Supreme Court backed the Calcutta High Court’s decision to cancel over 25,000 job appointments. These included both teaching and non-teaching staff recruited through the School Service Commission (SSC) in 2016. According to the court, the process was filled with “manipulations and frauds.” The bench noted, “The entire selection process has been vitiated and tainted beyond resolution.”

Patra Accuses Mamata of Promoting Corruption

Furthermore, Patra accused Mamata Banerjee of shielding the guilty. He said, “A few days ago, Mamata Banerjee went to Oxford and called herself a tigress. But no tigress engages in corruption.” He added that her government had “allowed corruption to flourish,” which caused great harm to lakhs of people.

Top Court Finds Recruitment Scam Irreparable

Significantly, the Supreme Court found the process beyond repair. It stated, “Credibility and legitimacy of the selection are denuded.” The Court also agreed with the High Court’s order to cancel the recruitment of 25,780 individuals.

Evidence of Tampering and Bribes

The High Court had earlier found proof of large-scale fraud. For instance, officials tampered with OMR answer sheets and gave jobs to undeserving candidates in return for bribes. Therefore, the court ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

TMC Allegedly Blocked Investigation

Moreover, Patra accused Mamata Banerjee’s party of trying to stop the investigation. He claimed, “When the CBI began probing the scam, Mamata Banerjee and her party leaders attacked the agency to shield the corrupt.”

BJP Questions Silence of Opposition

Additionally, Patra questioned the silence of the INDIA alliance. He asked, “Had such serious allegations been made against any NDA Chief Minister, Rahul Gandhi would have raised a storm in Parliament… Where is he now?”

Court Orders Job Cancellation and Salary Refunds

The Supreme Court ordered the removal of all “tainted” candidates. It also directed them to refund their salaries. The court stated, “Since their appointments were the result of fraud, this amounts to cheating.”

Untainted Candidates Can Reapply

On the other hand, candidates not found guilty will also lose their jobs. However, they won’t have to return the money they earned. The Court allowed them to reapply for their previous jobs in state departments.

BJP Turns Scam Into Key Election Issue

Finally, the BJP promised to keep raising the issue. It said that corruption under Mamata Banerjee would remain a central point in their campaign. Once again, Patra warned, “Didi jail jayengi, albat jayengi.”

The heated exchange, captured in a viral video, has ignited widespread debate.
</excerpt>

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced disruptions during her speech at Oxford University’s Kellogg College on March 27, forcing her to stop midway. A group of individuals created a ruckus, and students began posing tough questions, making a video of the incident go viral on social media.

Students Confront Mamata Banerjee with Tough Questions

During the event, a student asked Banerjee, “What would you like to say about Hindus?” She responded, “In my state, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians are all equal.” The student then retorted, “Where are you when Hindus are killed? How many Hindus have been killed? How many are being tortured?” As the situation escalated, Banerjee urged the crowd to allow her to speak, saying, “You are not insulting me, but your institution. Didi will come twice a year and fight like the Royal Bengal Tiger. I am not going to bow down in front of you.”

Speech Disrupted Over Controversial Issues

Banerjee had been speaking on social development, women’s empowerment, and child welfare in West Bengal. However, attendees challenged her claims of equality and questioned her on controversial issues such as the Tata case and the RG rape case. She responded, “This matter is in court, and the central government has taken it in its hands.”

Mamata’s Fiery Response to Protesters

As the interruptions continued, Banerjee appeared visibly frustrated and asked the protesters not to politicize the event. “Please do not do politics, brother. This is not a political platform. You can come to my state and do politics against me. I have no objection. Please raise your voice. This is democracy. I will listen carefully. All of you go to West Bengal,” she said.

Following the incident, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) claimed responsibility for the protest, stating that their members were among those confronting the Chief Minister. The disruption has sparked discussions about political discourse in academic spaces and how visiting leaders address critical questions from students.

Banerjee’s Fiery Response

Among the jeering, Banerjee theatrically produced an old photo of herself from the early 1990s, wearing a bandage on her head. She alleged the photo as evidence of a plot to kill her when she was in opposition. Speaking to the protesters, she told them, “Tell your party to increase its strength in our state (West Bengal) so they can fight with us”

Protests were held during Mamata Banerjee's speech at Kellogg College, Oxford this evening, disrupting the event. pic.twitter.com/uovvF08Xo1

When asked to comment on the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata, which led to nationwide demonstrations, Banerjee strongly rejected the claims. “This case is sub judice; the case is in the hands of the central government. Don’t take politics here—this forum is not meant for politics. You are lying. Don’t make this a political platform,” she insisted.

Clash Over Political Allegations

As disruptions persisted, one of the participants asked about the treatment of Hindus in Bengal. Banerjee replied, “I am for all, Hindus and Muslims,” but was shortly afterwards greeted by shouts of “Go back” from parts of the audience.

The demonstration was spearheaded by left-wing student association members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI-UK), who charged her government with corruption and stifling democratic freedoms. In annoyance, Banerjee fired back, “You should allow me to speak. You are not insulting me; you are insulting your institution.” She further charged some demonstrators with being “ultra-left and communal” and said she was followed by similar disruptions everywhere she went.

Strengthening Bengal-Britain Relations

Mamata Banerjee arrived in London on Sunday on an official visit to bolster Bengal’s relations with Britain. Speaking of the age-old connection between Bengal and Britain, she stressed its historical, cultural, and trade importance.

What planning did you make?” said Mamata Banerjee, attacking the CM Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh Government.

At least 30 people died and 60 were injured in a stampede in Prayagraj last month, while 18 people lost their lives in a recent stampede at an overcrowded New Delhi railway station.
“They have hidden hundreds of bodies to bring down the toll. The Maha Kumbh has turned into a ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ under the BJP rule,” Mamata Banerjee said.

Mamata Banerjee also dared the Bharatiya Janata Party to prove allegations of her having connection with Bangladeshi fundamentalists, adding that she would resign if the party was able to establish so.
Mamata Banerjee said she would complain to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about “his MLAs” accusing her of “being hand-in-glove with Bangladeshi fundamentalists”.

She alleged that the BJP was using religion to serve its political interests, adding that “freedom of speech doesn’t allow BJP MLAs to spread hatred and divide people”.
Mamata Banerjee’s speech in the West Bengal Assembly set off a fierce reaction from the BJP.

Amit Malviya, West Bengal’s co-in-charge, said: “Mamata Banerjee’s uncalled-for attack on the Maha Kumbh is the first sign of her imminent defeat in 2026. She is extremely nervous after Arvind Kejriwal’s complete decimation in Delhi. Last time, like Kejriwal, she lost her election from Nandigram. This time, she fears the worst.”
“Mamata Banerjee, under the influence of Firhad Hakim, a known proponent of Dawat-e-Islam, has once again revealed her deep-seated contempt for Bharat’s cultural and religious traditions. By calling the sacred Maha Kumbh Mrityu Kumbh (Death Kumbh), she has launched a deliberate attack on one of Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimages, attended by millions for centuries.”

He added that Mamata Banerjee never missed an opportunity to appease her vote bank, yet when it comes to Hindu festivals and traditions, her attitude shifts to disdain and hostility. The same leader who goes out of her way to facilitate Eid gatherings, fund madrasas, and permit unrestricted religious processions for extremists suddenly becomes concerned about public health and safety when it involves Hindu religious events.

</excerpt>

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will visit Sandeshkhali on Monday for the first time since allegations of sexual harassment and land grabbing by local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders sparked large-scale protests earlier this year.

Banerjee, speaking from the state secretariat, explained that her visit is focused on distributing benefits under various state government schemes and addressing local concerns. She emphasized that around 20,000 beneficiaries will benefit from programs like ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ and ‘Banglar Bari,’ and she plans to hand over certificates to approximately 100 people during the event.

The Chief Minister also clarified that this visit was part of a commitment she made before the Lok Sabha elections, assuring locals that she would come to Sandeshkhali.

In response, BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has announced a counter-event for the following day. The sexual harassment and land grab issue has been a major political flashpoint between the BJP and TMC. Adhikari plans to lead a ‘Jana Sanjog Yatra’ to engage with residents and promote the BJP’s vision for the region.

Earlier this year, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers were attacked while attempting to raid TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan’s residence in connection with a ration scam. Following this, several women alleged land seizures and sexual harassment by Shahjahan and his associates, leading to protests and calls for his arrest. While Banerjee accused the BJP, ED, and media of conspiring against her party, Shahjahan was eventually arrested after a 55-day manhunt and suspended from the TMC.

Despite the controversy, the BJP failed to secure the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat, with TMC veteran Haji Nurul Islam winning comfortably over BJP candidate Rekha Patra.

</excerpt>

In a significant political development, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee has declared that the INDIA bloc has faltered under Congress leadership, advocating for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to assume the alliance’s helm. This assertion aligns with former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav’s endorsement of Mamata Banerjee as the coalition’s leader.

Kalyan Banerjee stated, “We had said earlier only that Congress should understand that INDIA bloc has failed under its leadership. It will be good if Mamata Didi is brought for leadership (of INDIA bloc). Out of all the leaders, Mamata Didi’s name is on top when it comes to fighting politically.”

He further urged the Congress to shed its ego, emphasising Mamata Banerjee’s adeptness at addressing public concerns: “Congress should get rid of its ego. She knows how to raise the issues related to the people.”

Lalu Prasad Yadav’s remarks have intensified the leadership discourse within the opposition alliance. In Patna, he commented, “Congress’s objection means nothing. We will support Mamata. Mamata Banerjee should be given the leadership (of the INDIA Bloc). We will form the government again in 2025.”

However, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has adopted a cautious approach. MP Mahua Majhi noted, “There is no official statement from our party yet. I cannot say anything about it. Every party has their opinion. When the meeting will take place and whatever would be decided unanimously, that would be acceptable to our party…”

The Congress has yet to officially respond to these suggestions, prompting speculation about potential internal divisions within the INDIA bloc.

As the alliance navigates these leadership deliberations, the endorsements for Mamata Banerjee are poised to spark further debate, setting the stage for pivotal discussions in the near future.

After TMC MPs proposed making Mamata Banerjee the leader of the opposition alliance, the West Bengal Chief Minister responded. She said she would be willing to lead if asked. This comes amid rising disagreements within the INDIA bloc over Congress’s recent losses in Haryana and Maharashtra, as well as its insistence on debating one specific issue in Parliament.

Banerjee Clarifies Leadership Role

Mamata Banerjee made it clear that she is not leading the INDIA alliance. “I formed the INDIA bloc; now it is up to those leading the front to manage it. If they can’t run the show, what can I do?” she stated. She also said, “I am not leading that front.”

When asked if she would accept the leadership role, she responded, “If given the opportunity, I would ensure its smooth functioning.”

TMC MPs Push for Banerjee’s Leadership

Recently, TMC MPs like Kalyan Banerjee and Kirti Azad urged Congress and other INDIA bloc allies to recognize Mamata Banerjee as the opposition leader. They highlighted her success in defeating BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in West Bengal.

“Mamata Banerjee has a perfect record. Whenever Narendra Modi has faced defeat, it has always been in West Bengal,” Kalyan Banerjee said. He added, “Even in the recent by-elections, where the BJP had one seat and we had five, Mamata Didi hit a six and threw Narendra Modi out of the West Bengal boundary.”

INDIA Bloc’s Mixed Reactions

Shiv Sena (UBT) expressed support for Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. They said they are aware of her views and want her to be a major partner in the INDIA alliance. “We know this opinion of Mamata ji. We also want her to be a major partner of the INDIA alliance,” they stated. They also mentioned they would meet her soon in Kolkata.

However, Congress dismissed the suggestion. Congress leader Manickam Tagore called it “a good joke” when asked about the proposal.

BJP Criticizes INDIA Bloc’s Leadership Issues

The BJP criticized the INDIA bloc, calling it a group of parties united only against Prime Minister Modi, without a clear agenda. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, “Mamata Banerjee’s statement makes it clear that the entire INDIA alliance does not have faith in the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.”

TMC and Congress: A Strained Relationship

TMC and Congress have often disagreed, even within the INDIA bloc. They have clashed over issues like seat-sharing and contesting elections independently. Recently, tensions grew after Congress’s poor performance in Haryana and Maharashtra.

During the winter session of Parliament, TMC differed from Congress by opposing disruptions over the Adani issue. While Congress demanded a discussion on the Adani controversy, TMC focused on issues like central funding and the Manipur crisis. TMC also skipped several INDIA bloc meetings at the start of the winter session.

Despite being part of the same alliance, TMC and Congress continue to face challenges in their relationship.

The protest is driven by demands for justice on humanitarian grounds, following the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Protest to Continue Until Demands Are Met

The doctors, represented by six members of the West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front, have vowed to continue their strike until the government meets their demands. Dr. Sayantani, one of the protest leaders, stated, “Till the time our demands of justice on humanitarian grounds are not fulfilled, we will sit here.” She highlighted the importance of preventing further incidents like the one involving the victim, Abhaya, emphasizing, “This is not a fight against the public, this fight is by and for the public.”

Concerns Over Safety and Security in Hospitals

The protest stems from the lack of action by the state government in addressing safety and security concerns in hospitals. Junior doctors have repeatedly voiced concerns about inadequate security, particularly following the August 9 incident. Dr. Parichay Panda, another protesting doctor, stated, “Our demand is simple. We’ve given the government time to improve the safety and security of hospitals. However, the government has failed to do so.”

Earlier, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, requested a report from the National Task Force regarding safety measures in hospitals. This followed the court’s suo motu petition addressing the August 9 rape and murder case. The court had previously constituted the National Task Force to examine safety concerns and develop an action plan to prevent gender-based violence in medical institutions.

Protests have erupted across West Bengal in solidarity with the junior doctors. Medical students, interns, and doctors from institutions such as North Bengal Medical College and private hospitals have organized marches and vigils to demand justice. Doctors from private hospitals also lit earthen lamps at Ganga Ghat in Kolkata to mark their protest.

Despite the hunger strike, doctors have emphasized that their colleagues will continue to provide essential medical services during the Navratri festival, ensuring minimal disruption to public health services.

</excerpt>

Several areas in south Bengal face a massive flood risk as the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) released 3 lakh cusecs of water from its Panchet and Maithon dams within seven hours on the night of September 16 amid incessant low-pressure rains.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Pursurah in Hooghly district to take stock of the situation and said it is a “man-made” flood, caused by the Centre as DVC had never released so much water earlier.

“This is a man-made flood. They planned to drown Bengal. I personally spoke to the DVC authorities. I spoke to Hemant Soren, Chief Minister of Jharkhand at least thrice. The last time DVC released so much water was in 2009,” Banerjee told reporters.
“It was done to drown West Bengal. The Centre doesn’t undertake dredging. If dredging is done DVC can hold more water. Why do they not release water gradually when the dam is 70% – 80% full? In a bid to save Jharkhand, they release the water to Bengal. How much deprivation we shall take?” Banerjee complained.

“Even the water level in the Adi Ganga has shot up. I have never seen so much water in Adi Ganga. DVC released a huge amount of water. People have been requested to move to flood shelters. A few people got trapped at Khanakul in Hooghly district,” she told reporters earlier.

The Chief Minister’s residence at Kalighat in south Kolkata is located on the banks of the Adi Ganga, the original channel of River Ganga passing through Kolkata.
According to data shared by DVC, around 2.5 lakh cusec water was released for around six hours on Tuesday. The last time such a huge amount of water was released was in September 2009. DVC had then released 3,03,046 cusecs from its Panchet and Maithon dams.

“We released 2.5 lakh cusecs for around six hours on Tuesday. West Bengal was informed. The flow of release was reduced to 1.2 lakh cusecs later during the day,” said a DVC official.
Mamata also asked District Magistrates to remain alert and Nabanna, the State secretariat, has instructed officials to be prepared to deal with the situation.

Two people have already died because of this flood-like situation. While one person died due to wall collapse following rain in Purba Bardhaman district, another died of electrocution in Hooghly district. In Murshidabad district, floodwaters swept away a seven-year-old girl.

</excerpt>

The father of a trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has publicly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her inaction regarding past allegations against the former principal, Sandip Ghosh. The victim’s father asserts that his daughter might still be alive had the Chief Minister taken appropriate action back in 2021.

Accusations of Inaction and Corruption

Speaking to the media, the victim’s father expressed deep frustration, stating, “The day the accused will be punished will be our victory. In 2021, many allegations were leveled against former principal Sandip Ghosh; if the Chief Minister had taken action then, my daughter might have been alive today.” His comments came as junior doctors continued their protests against the grisly murder, which has captured national attention.

The victim, a trainee doctor, was found dead inside a seminar hall at the hospital on August 9. Her autopsy report revealed that she had suffered 25 internal and external injuries, indicating severe sexual assault and torture. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has alleged that Sandip Ghosh was involved in a cover-up, including delaying the filing of a murder FIR and attempting to pass off the murder as a suicide. Ghosh is also accused of corruption, including the sale of unclaimed corpses.

Protests and Government Response

The murder FIR was reportedly registered 14 hours after the crime was discovered. The delay and subsequent handling of the case have intensified protests among the medical community. In response to the protests, the West Bengal government has agreed to transfer Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, appointing Manoj Kumar Verma as the new police chief. Despite this concession, the protesting doctors have yet to end their strike.

The controversy has highlighted serious issues of accountability and governance within the medical and law enforcement systems in Kolkata. The ongoing investigation by the CBI continues to uncover the full extent of the alleged misconduct and corruption surrounding the case.

The Supreme Court saw intense deliberations during its suo motu hearing on the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on Tuesday. The hearing took a surprising turn when a senior counsel sought a direction for the removal of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing her alleged failure in the case.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud firmly rejected the plea, reprimanding the counsel for politicizing the legal matter. “This is not a political forum,” Chandrachud remarked sharply, expressing his displeasure. He clarified that the court’s primary focus was on addressing the grievances of junior doctors protesting over the lack of safety in hospitals.

CJI’s Response to Political Application

As the day’s hearing drew to a close, a senior counsel attempted to file an interlocutory application urging the court to demand the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee. CJI Chandrachud, intervening immediately, said, “Who are you appearing for? This is not a political platform. We are here to hear the grievances in relation to the case, not to entertain political discussions.” The judge emphasized that such applications lacked relevance in the current proceedings.

Even after being cautioned, the counsel persisted with his submissions, prompting Chandrachud to issue a final warning, saying, “Listen to me first, or I will have you removed from the court.” The court ended its session soon after.

Junior Doctors Deny Political Motives

The West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum, meanwhile, made it clear that they were not demanding the resignation of the chief minister. Their primary concern is the implementation of their five-point demands to ensure safety and better working conditions for hospital staff across the state.

Supreme Court’s Discussion on the Case

During the hearing, the bench reviewed a confidential status report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court noted that public disclosure of the report could compromise the ongoing investigation and instructed the CBI to provide an updated status by September 24.

Additionally, the victim’s father wrote to the court, highlighting certain findings in the investigation. CJI Chandrachud asked the CBI to take these concerns into account as the probe progressed. Senior advocate Indira Jaisingh, representing the junior doctors, mentioned that they would provide the names of individuals present at the crime scene to aid the investigation.

Focus on Junior Doctors’ Concerns

Apart from the investigation, the court also addressed other significant concerns raised by the protesting junior doctors. These included fears of punitive action by the state government and demands for stronger safety measures in hospitals across West Bengal. The court assured that these issues would be looked into during future proceedings.

With tensions still high among the medical community, the Supreme Court is expected to closely monitor developments in both the investigation and the implementation of safety protocols in hospitals.

</excerpt>

The West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has appointed Manoj Kumar Verma as the new commissioner of Kolkata Police. He replaces Vineet Kumar Goyal, who has been reassigned as the Additional Director General (ADG) of the Special Task Force.

This decision follows a meeting between Chief Minister Banerjee and protesting junior doctors. During the meeting, the Chief Minister agreed to several demands made by the doctors, including the removal of Vineet Kumar Goyal from his position as the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the removal of certain health department officials.

Addressing the protesting doctors, Banerjee stated, “Given the demand of junior doctors, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal has said in the meeting that he is ready to resign.” She added that Goyal would hand over his responsibilities to the new commissioner at 4 pm on Tuesday. The government has decided to comply with the demands set forth by the junior doctors.

In addition to this change, Banerjee announced that the Deputy Commissioner North, Abhishek Gupta, would also be removed. She explained, “We have decided to change the DC (Kolkata Police Commissioner)…he agreed to resign himself…in the health department, they demanded the removal of three persons, and we agreed to two. We have agreed to 99% of their demands. We have requested the junior doctors to return to work so that common citizens won’t suffer.”

Banerjee further clarified, “We have accepted three of their four demands…DC North (Abhishek Gupta) will also be removed, and a decision regarding the new DC will be taken tomorrow. Full attention will also be paid to the security of the doctors.”

This development comes amid ongoing protests by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front and the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA). They have demanded the removal of the Kolkata Commissioner of Police and the replacement of senior officials in the Health and Family Welfare Department of the West Bengal Government.

The protests were sparked by the rape and murder of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor inside a seminar room at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9. In a press conference held in the national capital, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front and RDA outlined their five-point demands, which include justice for the victim, referred to as “Abhaya,” and an expedited investigation into the case.

Additionally, the junior doctors called for the removal of the Director of Medical Education (DME), the Director of Health Services (DHS), and the Health Secretary from the Department of Health and Family Welfare. They also demanded action against “incompetent and complacent police authorities,” calling for the removal of Vineet Goyal and the Deputy Commissioner of Police of North and Central for administrative failure and alleged evidence tampering.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and the transfer of several top officials in the police and state health departments. This decision followed demands from junior doctors protesting the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Mamata Banerjee agreed to most of the five-point demands from the junior doctors, including the dismissal of the Director of Medical Education (DME), Director of Health Services (DHS), and the Deputy Commissioner (North Division), who allegedly tried to bribe the victim’s parents.

“We will announce the name of the new police commissioner after 4 pm on Tuesday, following the scheduled Supreme Court hearing on the RG Kar hospital case,” Banerjee stated at midnight after a meeting with the protesting doctors at her Kalighat residence, just hours before the Supreme Court hearing.

Who is Vineet Goyal?

Vineet Kumar Goyal, a 1994-batch IPS officer, took over as the Kolkata Police Commissioner in December 2021, succeeding Soumen Mitra. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur, Goyal has held multiple roles in the Kolkata Police, including Deputy Commissioner for the Eastern Suburban Division, Special Branch, and Headquarters. He also served as Joint Commissioner for the Special Task Force and Traffic, and Additional Commissioner of Police.

Goyal has been awarded the police medal for gallantry twice, along with the police medal for meritorious service and the Chief Minister’s medal for outstanding service.

Allegations Against Vineet Goyal

Protests following the alleged rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College intensified demands for Vineet Goyal’s removal. Both doctors and opposition parties claimed that Goyal, like West Bengal’s Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, had strong ties to Mamata Banerjee.

Criticism against Goyal surged after the mishandling of the August 14 vandalism during a protest march at RG Kar hospital. Junior doctors accused him of procedural failures, which led to growing protests and political backlash.

In a recent administrative meeting, Mamata Banerjee revealed that Goyal had offered to resign, but she refused his request. Public dissatisfaction with his leadership grew following his handling of the hospital incident, particularly after August 14.

Goyal, visibly frustrated, commented on August 15 that rumors and malicious media and social media campaigns had damaged public trust in the police. His statement followed police clashes with protesters at RG Kar Medical College. Despite the unrest, Goyal maintained that the police had acted appropriately in managing the rape and murder case, which has sparked widespread protests demanding justice.

Key demands include changes in the police and health departments.
</excerpt>

Junior doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital arrived at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat on Monday evening for a scheduled meeting to present their “five-point demands.” This meeting comes in the wake of protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor on August 9. The doctors were accompanied by two stenographers to assist with the proceedings.

Previous meetings between the junior doctors and the Chief Minister did not occur due to concerns about transparency. However, after a series of emails with the Chief Secretary earlier today, the junior doctors agreed to meet with the Chief Minister. The Chief Secretary assured that the meeting minutes would be signed by both parties and shared to ensure mutual understanding of the discussions.

This was the fifth invitation extended by the Chief Minister for a meeting with the junior doctors. In a letter to them, she stated, “This is the fifth and final time we are reaching out to you for a meeting between the Honourable Chief Minister and your delegates. In line with our discussion from the day before, we once again invite you to a meeting with the Honourable Chief Minister at her Kalighat residence for an open-minded discussion.”

</excerpt>

The Mamata Banerjee government has issued a fifth and final invitation to the junior doctors protesting the rape and murder of a 31-year-old medical student at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The junior doctors have refused to return to work until justice is served and several top officials are removed. Previous meetings between the state government and the doctors were disrupted due to disagreements, particularly over live-streaming the discussions.

Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has emailed the protesting doctors, emphasizing the Supreme Court’s directive for them to resume duties. The letter states:

“This is our fifth and final attempt to arrange a meeting between the Honourable Chief Minister and your representatives. As previously discussed, we invite you once more to meet the Honourable Chief Minister at her Kalighat residence for a discussion. Please come with an open mind.”

Pant highlighted that the meeting cannot be live-streamed or videographed, which was a sticking point in previous attempts to meet. Instead, the minutes of the meeting will be recorded and signed by both parties.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 PM today, September 16, 2024, at the Chief Minister’s Kalighat residence. The same delegation that attended previous discussions is requested to arrive at 4:45 PM.

Earlier attempts to meet with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have led to dramatic incidents. On September 12, the doctors went to the state secretariat, Nabanna, but refused to participate when told that the meeting could not be live-streamed. Videos of Banerjee waiting for the doctors went viral, and she later stated that she had waited for two hours.

A subsequent meeting planned for Saturday was also marred by the dispute over live-streaming. The junior doctors arrived at Banerjee’s residence at 6:45 PM, but continued to insist on live-streaming, leading to a standoff in the rain. Although Banerjee offered to meet them and even suggested having tea, the doctors insisted on a recording of the meeting. The state government refused this demand but offered to record the meeting and provide the recording later, citing the sub-judice nature of the matter. Eventually, the doctors decided to join the meeting, but by then, it was too late, according to state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya and Chief Secretary Dr. Manoj Pant.

</excerpt>

The deadlock between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and junior doctors protesting the rape and murder of a colleague at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital last month persisted on Thursday evening. A delegation of 32 doctors camped outside the state secretariat, refusing to enter and meet with the Chief Minister.

“We have been waiting for two hours to meet our brothers and sisters among the doctors. We had written to them, and they said they would come… that is why we made these arrangements. The Chief Secretary, the Director-General of Police, and the Home Secretary were all here,” Mamata Banerjee said. “I have waited for two days for them to come… but we respect their sentiment and forgive them.”

Visuals released by the state showed Banerjee sitting in a near-empty auditorium, with striking blue mats on the floor, and rows of chairs and tables set in a semi-circle before her, awaiting the doctors’ delegation.

The standoff centers on the doctors’ demand to live-stream the meeting, a request the state government has refused. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant explained that the state had accepted two other demands: that Banerjee be present and that all 32 doctors be allowed to attend, exceeding the earlier limit of 15.

“We allowed all 32 doctors to attend the meeting. However, their demand for live-streaming was declined. We said we would record it instead,” Pant said. Following this refusal, the doctors declared they would not attend the meeting unless all their preconditions were met.

Banerjee had been waiting since 5 p.m., 90 minutes after the scheduled start. “They have not entered the meeting hall yet… we request them to enter,” Pant added.

Bengal’s Director-General of Police Rajeev Kumar supported the state’s stance, calling the live-streaming demand “unreasonable.” “No formal meeting is ever live-streamed,” Kumar said, adding that there was no issue with the number of attendees.

This was the third invitation extended to the doctors this week to resolve the strike, which has entered its 34th day. Previous meetings were rejected due to demands for the resignation of Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop and refusal to limit the delegation size or live-stream the meeting.

Pant stressed that the state remained open to dialogue but reiterated that live-streaming would not be permitted. He assured the doctors that the meeting could be recorded to ensure accurate documentation of all discussions.

The junior doctors have been staging a sit-in protest outside the state’s Health Department headquarters, while their senior colleagues have returned to work following a Supreme Court plea. The doctors have criticized the state for not addressing their concerns.

Their demands include accountability for those responsible for the rape and murder of their colleague, action against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former RG Kar Hospital head arrested by the CBI, and the dismissal of Kolkata Police Chief Vineet Goyal and Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop.

They also called for increased security for healthcare workers and an end to the “threat culture” they allege is pervasive in state-run hospitals. Pant, in a letter to the doctors, reminded them that they had overrun the Supreme Court’s deadline to return to work, noting that adhering to court directions was everyone’s duty as law-abiding citizens.

The Supreme Court, which had taken suo motu cognizance of the RG Kar case, left it to the Bengal government to handle the junior doctors’ strike. Banerjee, however, has so far refrained from taking action, likely due to the political ramifications such a move could ignite.

West Bengal Government’s Response to Protests

On Wednesday, the West Bengal government rejected demands from junior doctors for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s presence and a live broadcast of negotiations as conditions to end their month-long strike. The protest was sparked by the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Continued Protests and Government Stance

The strike, now in its 33rd day, saw doctors continuing their sit-in outside Swasthya Bhawan in Kolkata for a second day. State Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya stated that the government was open to talks but suggested that “political forces” might be influencing the protests. The doctors swiftly denied these allegations and pledged to maintain their protests until their demands are addressed.

Supreme Court Directive and Government’s Position

Minister Bhattacharya urged doctors to adhere to the Supreme Court’s order to resume work but did not specify if there would be any penalties for those not complying. The RG Kar Medical College postponed a hearing scheduled for Friday, which involves 51 doctors accused of creating a hostile environment and disrupting the hospital’s operations.

Political Reactions and Counter-Protests

Leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) issued veiled threats against the protesting doctors, labeling them as “anti-nationals” and suggesting potential counter-protests. TMC MLA Humayun Kabir mentioned that the agitation was causing public suffering. Meanwhile, TMC leader Chandan Mukhopadhyay criticized the doctors for ignoring the Supreme Court’s order, while Kunal Ghosh expressed support for justice and called for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete its probe and deliver the death penalty to the culprits.

CBI and Police Investigations

On Wednesday, the CBI continued its investigation with additional questioning. Arrested suspect Sanjay Roy was interrogated at the Presidency Correctional Home, while four junior doctors were questioned in the morning. The CBI also scrutinized the investigation methods of Kolkata Police officers, including Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Gupta and Vidit Raj Bhundesh.

Public and Political Rally for Justice

In a separate development, pro-BJP intellectuals, led by party leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty, organized a rally in Kolkata demanding justice for the deceased doctor. This rally, which commemorated Swami Vivekananda’s historic 1893 speech, saw participation from hundreds of BJP activists and saffron-leaning intellectuals.

The situation remains tense as the community grapples with the ramifications of the case and the ongoing protests.

The mother of the young doctor who was tragically raped and murdered in Kolkata has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of lying. Banerjee had claimed that the victim’s parents were “never offered money” as compensation. The grieving mother questioned the chief minister’s integrity, saying, “Why would I lie in my daughter’s name?”

“The chief minister is lying. My daughter won’t return. Would I lie in her name? She (the CM) told us that we would receive money and suggested we do something in her memory. I told her that I would collect the money only after justice is served for my daughter,” the mother told ANI.

Victim’s Family Denies CM’s Statement

The victim’s cousin also strongly contradicted Mamata Banerjee’s claim, saying with “full responsibility” that the Trinamool Congress leader herself had made the offer of financial compensation to the family.

Reaction to Banerjee’s Durga Puja Appeal

As Durga Puja approaches, Banerjee urged the public to return to the festive spirit, a plea that the victim’s mother found deeply insensitive.

“Durga Puja was celebrated in my house too; my daughter used to organize everything. But now, it will never be celebrated again in my home. The light in my home is gone. How can I ask people to return to the festival?” she asked. She further challenged Banerjee’s stance by questioning, “If such a tragedy happened in her family, would she say the same thing?”

The Fight for Justice Continues

Despite the pain and grief, the mother is determined to continue her fight for justice. She vowed that the movement for her daughter’s justice would persist “until justice is served.”

The Incident

The incident in question occurred on August 9 when the second-year postgraduate medical student was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. </excerpt>

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing intense criticism following the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. In her response to the incident, Banerjee highlighted other tragic cases of violence against women, including the 2020 rape of a 20-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, and the 2013 rape and brutal murder of a college student in North 24 Parganas district, Bengal.

New Legislation Aimed at Strengthening Punishment

The ruling Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal is set to introduce a groundbreaking anti-rape bill in the state assembly on Tuesday. Named the “Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024,” this proposed legislation aims to significantly tighten the legal framework surrounding rape and sexual violence in the state.

Key Provisions of the New Bill

The bill introduces stringent measures, including the imposition of the death penalty for individuals convicted of rape if the crime results in the victim’s death or a permanent unconscious state. Additionally, it mandates life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for convicted offenders.

Amendments to Existing Laws

The Aparajita Bill proposes amendments to several sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) 2023 and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012. Specifically, it seeks to amend Sections 64, 66, 70(1), 71, 72(1), 73, 124(1), and 124(2) of the BNS 2023, which pertain to the punishment for various forms of rape and related crimes. The bill also proposes to remove Sections 65(1), 65(2), and 70(2) related to punishments for offenders under different age categories.

Improved Investigation and Trial Procedures

The Anti-Rape Bill aims to streamline the investigation process by reducing the deadline for investigations from two months to three weeks, with a possible extension of up to 15 days under special circumstances. It also proposes life imprisonment for repeat offenders, which would be defined as imprisonment for the remainder of the offender’s natural life or death, accompanied by a fine.

Formation of Special Task Forces

To handle cases efficiently, the bill calls for the creation of a special task force named “Aparajitha Task Force” at the district level. Led by a deputy superintendent of police, this task force will be equipped with the necessary resources to manage investigations and minimize the trauma experienced by victims and their families.

Special Courts and Confidentiality Measures

Additionally, the bill proposes the establishment of special courts to handle rape and sexual assault cases. It also includes provisions for maintaining confidentiality during court proceedings, with penalties of 3 to 5 years imprisonment and fines for unauthorized disclosures.

Legislative Session

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for a two-day session of the state assembly starting Monday to table the bill. State Law Minister Moloy Ghatak will introduce the bill during this session.

The introduction of this Anti-Rape Bill reflects the state government’s commitment to creating a safer environment for women and children in West Bengal.

</excerpt>

Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC) President Ripun Bora announced his resignation from the party on Sunday, citing widespread concerns that TMC is perceived as a regional party from West Bengal. Bora expressed his disillusionment with the party’s inability to counter the BJP effectively in Assam due to this perception.

Bora explained, “I initially believed that TMC could bolster our efforts against the BJP in Assam. However, it’s become clear that the people of Assam view TMC as a party rooted in Bengal, despite their respect for Mamata Banerjee. Since the people of Assam are not receptive to TMC, I realized that continuing with the party would yield no results and would only waste my time and energy.”

To address the perception issues, Bora suggested several measures, including appointing an Assamese leader at the national level, declaring Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s residence in Tollygunge as a heritage site, and transforming Madhupur Satra in Cooch Behar into a cultural hub. These steps, he believed, could help counter the perception of TMC as a regional party of West Bengal.

Bora also revealed his frustration with the lack of response from TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to his repeated attempts to address these concerns. His unsuccessful efforts to engage with party leadership further influenced his decision to resign.

Bora concluded, “Having served as Assam TMC President for over two years, it is clear that the party’s image as a regional entity from West Bengal has impeded our progress. The people of Assam are unwilling to accept a party from another state. Consequently, I have decided to dissociate myself from TMC.”

</excerpt>

The Union Women and Child Development Minister, Annapurna Devi, has responded to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s second letter requesting stricter laws and expedited justice for heinous crimes like rape and murder. In her letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Banerjee called for a mandatory time-bound disposal of such cases. This call for action came amid the ongoing CBI investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Minister Devi’s response highlighted discrepancies in Banerjee’s claims regarding the establishment of Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) in West Bengal. Devi pointed out that while the state has 88 Fast Track Courts (FTCs), which are different from FTSCs under the central scheme, West Bengal has yet to operationalize an additional 11 FTSCs despite a backlog of 48,600 rape and POCSO cases. Devi accused Banerjee of presenting incorrect information and attempting to cover up delays in the implementation of FTSCs.

The BJP has criticized Banerjee, questioning her commitment to enforcing existing regulations designed to protect women. Amit Malviya, the BJP co-incharge for West Bengal, demanded an explanation from Banerjee for not ensuring strict implementation of these rules, calling her letters a mere distraction.

Regarding Banerjee’s request for permanent judicial officers in FTSCs instead of retired ones, Devi stated that the scheme guidelines specify a different arrangement, with one judicial officer and seven staff dedicated to handling rape and POCSO cases. Devi clarified that permanent officers could not be assigned additional charges related to FTSCs as per the guidelines.

The rape and murder case of the junior doctor has caused nationwide outrage, with calls for reforms to ensure safety and dignity in workplaces. The Trinamool Congress has accused the BJP of politicizing the tragedy, while the BJP has countered with allegations of corruption within the medical college. The former principal of the college, Sandip Ghosh, is under investigation, and the CBI has arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, who was seen near the scene of the crime.
