The project aims to create jobs, triple GDP in four years, and generate over $1 billion in revenue by year five.
</excerpt>

The Maldives, which is facing an economic crisis, is developing a $9 billion blockchain hub to mitigate its financial woes. MBS Global Investments, a Dubai family office, has pledged to invest $8.8 billion in developing a “blockchain and digital assets” financial hub in the island nation within five years, The Financial Times reports.

The investment is also meant to help fight the nation’s impending debt issues, with the investment likely exceeding the Maldives’ $7 billion GDP annually. Finance Minister Moosa Zameer said the nation had to move away from tourism and fish exports, as “debt falling due in the next two years was the largest challenge.” Zameer sees the blockchain project as being able to solve the country’s economic woes.

Why the Maldives?

On Sunday, the Maldives government and MBS Global Investments signed the agreement in a joint venture deal. The family office, which has assets of approximately $14 billion, is headed by Qatari Sheikh Nayef bin Eid Al Thani. To fund the project, the company will use its network of high-net-worth individuals and family offices to create a consortium. MBS CEO Nadeem Hussain also confirmed that over $4 billion to $5 billion worth of firm commitments have already been locked in.

Details about the Project

The Maldives International Financial Centre, located in Malé, will be 830,000 sq meters in size and employ 16,000 individuals. The master plan of the project is expected to triple the country’s GDP within four years and earn more than $1 billion in revenue by the fifth year. The move comes after India’s $760 million bailout of the Maldives to help the nation’s sovereign default. Zameer admitted that India and China both had significant roles in the nation’s economic development but stressed that the MBS deal provides a “different” business model compared to conventional borrowing.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu recently found himself in the headlines after organizing a 15-hour press conference, which created a new world record. It started at 10 AM on Saturday and ran till well into the night with only occasional pauses for prayers. Muizzu broke the former 14-hour record of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2019.

This was not only a personal record for Muizzu but also emphasized the increasing significance of press freedom in the Maldives.

New World Record in Press Interaction

Muizzu’s press conference established a new world record. He responded to questions by journalists all day long. His office said the timing was meant to commemorate World Press Freedom Day. This highlighted the importance of the media to democracy.

The timing was intentional, as it aligned with his government’s efforts at transparency and the Maldives better rating in world press freedom indices.

Benchmark in Press Freedom

During the conference, Muizzu reasserted his commitment to a free press. He emphasized its critical role in democracy. He referred to the Maldives’ improvement in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, where the nation rose to 104th place. The improvement demonstrates Muizzu’s devotion to freedom of expression and transparency.

His administration seeks to build an atmosphere in which journalists can work without the fear of censorship.

Maldives’ World Positioning in Freedom of the Press

The Maldives, under Muizzu, has taken great leaps in freedom of the press. Such is particularly admirable considering the nation’s stormy past in politics. Muizzu’s favor towards the press is a departure from past governments, which were deemed to suppress media freedom.

His record-breaking press conference is a new dawn where the press can be critical of the government.

Symbol of Climate Consciousness and National Development

Muizzu’s record-breaking press conference is not his sole success. His predecessor Mohamed Nasheed became a global news headline in 2009 by conducting the world’s first underwater cabinet meeting. The purpose was to create awareness about increasing sea levels.

Likewise, Muizzu’s press conference brings international focus to the nation’s changing political scene and increasing influence.

Step Towards Global Recognition

Muizzu’s record-breaking event calls to mind his commitment to openness and brings international focus on the Maldives. His presidency is a turning point, with the nation becoming recognized as both an innovative and climate-aware country.

As the world observes, Muizzu’s leadership continues to transform the political tone of the nation, pushing press freedom and raising its global profile.

The incident was captured on video, showing her getting treated for wounds. Social media users criticized the practice of feeding sharks for Instagram shots.
</excerpt>

A viral social media video captured the moment when a woman’s holiday in the Maldives became a nightmare. In the video, Chels, a travel vlogger, is seen floating among a school of fish as a shark bites her hand. Chels’s partner, Antonio, filmed the incident, which he posted on Instagram.

The caption clarifies that the shark, a Nurse shark, mistook Chels’s hand to be tuna that it sucked it in but later released it. Chels got treated at the doctor’s for three injured fingers. The treatment process is combined with the footage of the shark bite.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Lok Sabha on Friday, discussing India’s foreign policy and its relationship with neighboring Bangladesh. In response to Congress MP Manish Tewari’s concerns regarding India’s “neighborhood first” policy, Jaishankar emphasized India’s proactive efforts to strengthen ties with its neighbors.

Tewari raised questions about the effectiveness of India’s neighborhood policy, citing instances where neighboring countries have engaged with China and other nations. He noted, “India was the 8th country which the new President of the Maldives visited after being elected on an ‘oust India’ campaign, and that too based upon their economic compulsions.” He also mentioned Nepal’s recent engagement with China and Sri Lanka’s significant external debt to China, questioning whether any of India’s neighbors prioritize an “India-first” policy.

In his response, Jaishankar acknowledged Bangladesh as a significant partner in various development initiatives but highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of minorities in the country. He expressed hope that the new government in Bangladesh would lead to a mutually beneficial and stable relationship.

Jaishankar stated, “We expect that in its interest, Bangladesh would take measures so that its minorities are safe.” He pointed out that India has consistently raised concerns about incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, referencing recent diplomatic engagements, including a visit by India’s Foreign Secretary to Dhaka.

India’s role in development projects across the region

The External Affairs Minister also discussed India’s role in development projects across the region, noting, “In almost every one of our neighboring countries, except Pakistan and China, we have had important development projects. That is the case with Bangladesh as well.”

Reaffirming India’s commitment to a peaceful and cooperative neighborhood, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of maturity in diplomatic relations, stating, “It’s crucial that we are mature and don’t indulge in point-scoring. Our neighbors also have their politics, and it’s only natural that there will be ups and downs. However, our focus remains on ensuring stability and fostering collaboration.”

Jaishankar further clarified that while India seeks good relations with all its neighbors, including Pakistan, the nature of that relationship would depend on Pakistan’s commitment to countering terrorism. “It is for Pakistan to show that they are changing their behavior,” he asserted, reinforcing India’s position on maintaining strong, secure borders and fostering peaceful ties in the region.

However, starting December 1, 2024, leaving this tropical paradise will cost more as the Maldives increases its exit fees, CNN reports.

For economy-class travelers, the fee will rise from $30 (₹2,532) to $50 (₹4,220). Business-class passengers will see an increase from $60 (₹5,064) to $120 (₹10,129). First-class passengers face a hike from $90 (₹7,597) to $240 (₹20,257), while private jet travelers will pay $480 (₹40,515), up from $120 (₹10,129). These charges apply to tourists of all nationalities, irrespective of flight duration or distance.

The Maldivian Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) stated that the additional revenue will support the maintenance of Velana International Airport (MLE), the country’s main airport. “These taxes are usually added to ticket prices, so tourists won’t feel the pinch,” notes the report.
Known for its year-round warm climate, stunning sunsets, and tranquil spas, the Maldives is a favorite for those seeking privacy and exclusivity. Despite the increase in costs, its allure as a celebrity hotspot and haven for serenity is unlikely to wane.

While the leaders did not provide specific details regarding the trade agreement, PM Modi highlighted its significance in enhancing economic ties between the two nations. “To strengthen the economic ties between the nations, we have started to discuss the free trade agreement as well,” he stated.

Launch of RuPay Card and Future Initiatives

During the press briefing, PM Modi also announced the launch of the RuPay card in the Maldives and indicated plans to connect India and Maldives through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the near future. He emphasized the Indian government’s commitment to ensure that the benefits of UPI extend beyond India, allowing other countries to benefit as well.

President Muizzu expressed gratitude to PM Modi for India’s generous assistance in the Maldives’ infrastructure development over the years, affirming India’s role as a crucial partner. “We look forward to concluding the Free Trade Agreement with India, which will enable us to harness the full economic potential between our countries and to increase Indian investments in both our tourism and various sectors of development,” he said.

The Maldivian President also extended an invitation for PM Modi to visit the Maldives next year and mentioned their agreement on a comprehensive vision document aimed at enhancing bilateral relations. This document encompasses development cooperation, trade partnerships, digital initiatives, energy projects, health cooperation, and maritime security cooperation.

President Muizzu is on a five-day state visit to India, marking his first bilateral trip since assuming office. He had previously attended PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in June 2024. His itinerary includes visits to Mumbai and Bengaluru, where he will participate in business events.

Maldives, as a key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), holds a special place in India’s vision of ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and aligns with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First Policy.’ The recent visit of Maldives’ External Affairs Minister to India underscores the importance of the relationship between the two nations and is expected to further enhance cooperation and people-to-people ties.

Ahead of a significant bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the need for financial assistance from India. He expressed confidence that India, being one of Maldives’ largest development partners, is aware of the island nation’s economic challenges and will continue to provide support to alleviate its financial burden.

Muizzu’s presidency has seen some strain in India-Maldives relations, especially as he rose to power in November with an ‘India Out’ campaign as a key election promise. Despite this, Muizzu arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for his first official state visit since taking office. During his five-day visit, which includes stops in Agra, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, he is expected to engage in discussions aimed at rebuilding bilateral ties.

Warm Reception in India

Upon his arrival, Muizzu was welcomed at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met with the Maldives President, expressing appreciation for Muizzu’s commitment to strengthening India-Maldives relations. Jaishankar expressed optimism about the upcoming talks with Prime Minister Modi, stating that they would “give a new impetus to our friendly ties.”

Muizzu’s Key Objective

In an interview with the BBC prior to his departure, Muizzu outlined the primary goal of his visit. He highlighted that India, fully aware of the Maldives’ fiscal difficulties, will be instrumental in finding solutions. He expressed hope for continued Indian support, emphasizing India’s role in easing the country’s financial strain. Currently, India has already provided $1.4 billion in financial aid to the Maldives for various development projects.

Maldives’ Economic Challenges

The Maldives faces significant economic challenges, with foreign exchange reserves dropping to just $440 million, enough to cover only 1.5 months of imports. In light of these financial difficulties, global credit rating agency Moody’s downgraded the Maldives’ credit rating last month, citing heightened risks of debt default. However, Muizzu reassured that the country is not on the verge of a sovereign debt default and will not seek an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, instead relying on a “home-grown agenda” to manage the crisis.

Strained Military Relations

The relationship between India and the Maldives faced additional tension after Muizzu’s election, as he requested the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. The two countries agreed on the removal of around 80 Indian military personnel by May of this year, while Indian technical staff continue to operate helicopters and aircraft in the Maldives. Following the completion of this withdrawal, high-level visits between the two nations resumed, signaling efforts to mend ties.

A Shift in Tone

Muizzu, while avoiding direct reference to his previous anti-India stance, adopted a more conciliatory tone in recent remarks. He expressed confidence that any differences between the two nations could be resolved through “open dialogue and mutual understanding.” Muizzu also reiterated that his government’s foreign policy prioritizes the Maldives’ interests, with the goal of fostering peaceful and respectful relationships with other countries, including India.

Looking Forward to Strengthening Bilateral Ties

During his visit, Muizzu is set to meet with President Draupadi Murmu and engage in discussions with Prime Minister Modi on key bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest. India considers the Maldives a key maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region, playing a central role in India’s ‘SAGAR’ initiative (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this visit highlights the importance of the relationship and is expected to further strengthen cooperation and people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Earlier, on September 27, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu told ANI that he plans to visit India as soon as possible, praising the “very strong” bilateral relationship between the two countries. “I am planning to visit (India) as soon as possible…We have a very strong bilateral relationship,” Muizzu stated during the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

Notably, if the visit happens, it will be Muizzu’s second trip to India, following his first in June for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Traditionally, every Maldivian President made India their first foreign visit, but Muizzu broke this trend by visiting Turkiye and China first after taking office earlier this year.

Since taking office, the Mohamed Muizzu government has adopted a reconciliatory approach after relations between the two nations became strained. Muizzu, who campaigned on an ‘India Out’ platform, with a focus on the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives, has taken several unconventional steps in the context of India-Maldives ties.

The Maldives is facing mounting concerns about its ability to meet obligations on Islamic bonds, known as sukuk. Despite a recent uptick in sukuk values following a government assurance of forthcoming payments, apprehension about the island nation’s financial stability persists.

What Are Sukuk Bonds?

Sukuk bonds are Islamic financial certificates that serve as a Shari’ah-compliant alternative to conventional bonds. According to the Asian Development Bank, sukuk function as trust certificates that grant investors ownership or part ownership of an asset, from which they can earn profit, including rental income. This structure avoids the interest-based earnings typical of conventional bonds, adhering to Islamic laws that prohibit interest and speculative investments.

The Growing Market for Sukuk

Islamic finance, including sukuk, has seen substantial growth globally. Countries such as Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Brunei, among others, issue sukuk to meet their capital needs. The industry has expanded rapidly since 2009, with assets valued at approximately $1.9 trillion as of 2015. S&P Global forecasts $170 billion in sukuk issuances this year, while Moody’s estimates even higher figures.

Maldives’ Financial Struggles

The Maldives currently holds around $500 million in sukuk debt, with a crucial payment of $25 million due on October 8. Recent developments have seen the sukuk’s value drop to record lows, highlighting investor concerns. Despite the central bank’s reassurances, the bonds have struggled, performing poorly on Bloomberg’s EM Sovereign Total Return Index.

The Maldives’ economic challenges are further compounded by dwindling foreign exchange reserves, which fell below $50 million in July. Fitch Ratings has downgraded the country’s rating twice since June, reflecting ongoing financial instability. Additionally, the Bank of Maldives has imposed new restrictions on foreign currency spending, exacerbating the financial strain.

Potential Default and Political Implications

No country has yet defaulted on sukuk bonds, making the Maldives‘ situation particularly noteworthy. Analysts are concerned that the Maldives might be the first sovereign sukuk issuer to default, a scenario that could have broad implications for the market. The Maldives’ largest bilateral creditors are India and China, with recent political shifts impacting relations.

President Mohamed Muizzu, who has pursued a pro-Beijing stance, came to power promising to reduce Indian military presence, which has since been fulfilled. Despite improvements in diplomatic relations with India, neither India nor China has stepped in to assist financially.

Market Reactions and Future Outlook

Recent comments from investors highlight the market’s uncertainty about sukuk restructuring and the broader implications of a potential default. Soeren Moerch from Danske Bank suggests that while the recent rise in sukuk values offers some respite, it does not address the underlying issues of low reserves and budget deficits.

George Xu from Fitch Ratings underscores the severity of the situation, noting that reserves are critically low and default risks are increasing. As the Maldives prepares for its upcoming payment deadline, the financial community watches closely, anxious about the potential impact of a historic default on the sukuk market.

</excerpt>

During his visit to Male on Saturday, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid met with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar. Shahid expressed confidence that India will continue to be a primary ally for the Maldives in times of need. He also noted the economic and diplomatic challenges resulting from the previous government’s anti-India stance and welcomed the current shift towards strengthening relations.

In a post on X, Shahid stated that the Maldives government’s “Anti-India” stance resulted in economic setbacks and a reduction in the country’s international standing.

“Great pleasure to warmly welcome and meet Indian External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar to the Maldives with my colleagues from @MDPSecretariat. The Maldives has always been confident that India will always be the first responder any time the Maldives “dials an international 911,” he wrote in his post.

“The current government’s initial stoking of anti-India sentiments through aggressive slogans, mockery and the branding of a time-tested friend and development partner as a regional bully, has caused a decline in the Maldives’ international standing, economic loss, and many other unnecessary difficulties, and challenges,” Shahid wrote further.

“With this in mind, the MDP welcomes the sudden recalibration of the Maldives-India policy of President Muizzu’s government, from its previous India Out policy. The MDP hopes that this shift will not be temporary or superficial, but consistent and meaningful in the best interests of the people of the Maldives. Further, the MDP calls on the Government of President Muizzu to issue a public apology for the actions, lies and irresponsible comments from its officials which have resulted in significant damage to the Maldives foreign and economic outlook,” he added.

The MDP also released a statement highlighting several projects funded by India.

“The Maldives-India relationship has always been based on the principles of mutual respect, respect for international law, territorial integrity, a common desire for regional security, and an open and peaceful Indian Ocean,” it said.

MDP welcomed Jaishankar’s visit to Addu City, where he handed over the projects funded by India to the Maldives.

“The MDP notes with appreciation that during this visit, Minister Jaishankar will hand over the reclamation and shore protection project and the inauguration of 4-Lane Detour Link Road comprising of 1.463 kms which connects Maradhoo to Hithadhoo around the Hankede Island. The construction of the road is a crucial aspect of the Hankede Integrated Tourism Project, and is vital to the successful economic development of the South. It is also a major component of the “Design and Build of Consturction of Roads and Drainage System in Addu City Project”, and also marks the completion of the shore protection project. Both projects are funded through the EXIM Bank line of credit facility from Government of India, and were conceptualized, signed and initialized by the administration of President Solih,” the MDP said in its post.

MDP also praised the exchange of notes during this visit, which will train an additional 1,000 civil service officers as part of a key human resource program launched under President Solih’s administration. Additionally, the MDP welcomed the signing of an MoU between the Ministry of Economic Development and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to enhance and expand digital and integrated payment systems, another agreement discussed and finalised during President Solih’s tenure.

“MDP welcomes with gratitude to India, the inauguration and handover of six High Impact Community Development Projects, implemented with grant assistance from the Government of India, and signed and implemented during President Solih’s administration. The High Impact Community Development Project scheme is a highly successful and beneficial grant assistance scheme initialised in 2019,” it said.

MDP also welcomed the transfer of water and sewerage projects across 28 islands, funded by the EXIM Bank of India. These projects were part of the USD 800 million Line of Credit provided by the Government of India during President Solih’s first state visit to India in December 2018 and were inaugurated during his administration. MDP noted the significant assistance India has provided to the Maldives over the past five years.

“During the past five years, India has assisted the Maldives in a variety of areas, including the funding of the largest infrastructure project in the country the Greater Male Connectivity Project. Other large-scale projects include the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement (NCPLE) in Addu City, the Coast Guard Building in Male, the development of Maldives National Defence Force Harbour and dockyard in Uthuru Thila Falhu, the Addu Roads and Sewerage Development Project, the Development of Water and Sewerage projects in 36 Islands, the Koodoo and Felivaru Fisheries Expansion Project, Hanimaadhoo International Airport, IGMH Hospital. The Government of India has also extended grant assistance through the High Impact Community Development Projects scheme, for 47 projects in over 60 islands across the Maldives, amounting to over 250 million Rufiyaa. India also provided extensive support to the Maldives to tackle and overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, including through vaccines, medical consumables, financial assistance, and humanitarian assistance,” the MDP added in its statement.

Jaishankar was joined by Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil, Vice President Hisaan Hussein, Youth Wing President Rifqa Shiham, Foreign Relations Committee Members Aminath Shauna and Hussein Shaheem, and Secretary General Shaazly Shafeeq.

Earlier in the day, EAM S. Jaishankar presented a significant water and sanitation project valued at USD 110 million to the Maldives, financed by India. Covering 28 islands, the project was virtually inaugurated by Jaishankar, who is in Male for a three-day official visit from August 9-11.

</excerpt>

On Saturday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a significant water and sanitation project worth USD 110 million to Maldives, funded by India. Covering 28 islands, the project was virtually inaugurated by Jaishankar, who is in Male for a three-day official visit from August 9 to 11. During the virtual event, Jaishankar highlighted that the development partnership between India and Maldives aims to address the needs and priorities of the Maldivian people and government.

“Our development partnership is driven by the needs and priorities of the people and the Government of Maldives and is a judicious mix of grants, loans, budgetary support, capacity building and training assistance. We are now entering a phase where many of these projects are getting realised on the ground, delivering tangible benefits to the common people,” said Jaishankar.

Jaishankar also pointed out the challenges of climate change, especially for small island developing states like the Maldives, and stressed the need to address issues related to freshwater availability and access. He mentioned that this initiative is in line with India’s own programs, “Har Ghar Jal” (Water to Every Home) and “Swachh Bharat” (Clean India).

“In our efforts to expand the scope and benefits of development cooperation, we are mindful of the challenges posed by climate change, especially, for small island developing states such as the Maldives, which are even more vulnerable to the vagaries of rising sea levels. One of the immediate concerns is the availability and access of freshwater resources,” said Jaishankar.

“It has been our objective to provide ecologically sustainable low-cost solutions to our development partners so that they are not only able to access potable water but also have the capability to treat sewage, thereby, protecting the delicate ecology of these islands and atolls. This finds resonance in our own initiatives in India of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ and ‘Swachha Bharat’, i.e, ‘Water to Every Home’ and ‘Clean India,” he added.

This project has provided safe drinking water to 32 islands and established a sewerage system in 17 islands.

“I am happy to note that this has directly impacted the lives of 28,000 Maldivians I believe. Under this project, the latest technologies have been used to provide clean drinking water and safe sewerage disposal. In addition, the buildings are also equipped with solar energy providing support to the island grids. With a total funding of USD 110 million, this is the largest climate adaptation implemented in Maldives with international collaboration,” the EAM said.

He also expressed hope that this project will enhance the lives of women on the islands, who are primarily tasked with collecting clean water.

“It is also significant to note that the completion of this project has supplemented the Government of Maldives’ endeavours in reaching its Sustainable Development Goals by establishing climate-resilient and cost-effective water and sewerage systems. I am sure that this will go a long way in improving the lives of the women on these islands who bear the primary burden of fetching clean water,” Jaishankar said.

“India-Maldives development cooperation embodies the motto of our partnership – ‘Imagined by Maldives, Delivered by India’. It will be our endeavour to harness this defining feature of our relationship and scale greater heights. And I hope President with your guidance and encouragement, our joint efforts, our joint activities and our shared vision will form an important milestone in the journey of our two nations together,” he added.

Earlier on Saturday, Jaishankar met with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, reaffirming New Delhi’s dedication to enhancing India-Maldives relations for the mutual benefit of both countries and the broader region.

Muizzu expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their consistent support of the island nation. He added that the “enduring partnership” between New Delhi and Male is strengthening the ties between the two countries through cooperation in security, development, and cultural exchange.

EAM Jaishankar’s visit is his first trip to the Maldives since his reappointment for a second term. It follows the recent visit of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu to India for the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet and council of ministers.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in the Maldives on Friday, marking the start of a three-day official visit from August 9-11. This visit holds particular significance as it is the first high-level engagement between India and the Maldives since the election of President Mohamed Muizzu, whose administration has tilted the island nation’s foreign policy closer to China, raising concerns in New Delhi.

Jaishankar was warmly received at Velana International Airport by Maldives’ Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer. Upon his arrival, Jaishankar tweeted his appreciation, saying, “Pleased to arrive in Maldives. Thank Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer for receiving me at the airport. Maldives occupies an important place in our vision of ‘Neighbourhood First’ & ‘SAGAR’. Looking forward to fruitful engagements with the leadership.” Zameer also expressed his enthusiasm on X (formerly Twitter), noting, “Delighted to welcome Minister of External Affairs of India Dr. S Jaishankar on his official visit to the Maldives. Looking forward to having meaningful discussions to further solidify the historic ties between Maldives and India!”

During the visit, Jaishankar is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with President Muizzu and Minister Zameer. These talks are being closely watched for signals on how India plans to navigate its relationship with the Maldives under the new administration. The focus will likely be on restoring trust and dialogue, particularly in light of the Maldives’ recent pivot towards China, which has introduced new challenges to India-Maldives relations.

In addition to diplomatic talks, Jaishankar will observe the progress of key development projects funded by India, including the Thilamalé Bridge and ongoing initiatives in Addu, such as road development and the Hankede project. He will also visit the India-supported Police College in Addu City.

The visit aims to explore new avenues for advancing the historically strong bilateral relationship, particularly in defense and security sectors. Strategic discussions are expected to address concerns about Chinese influence in the Maldives and ensure that India remains a significant partner in the region.

Tensions between India and the Maldives have been high since Muizzu’s administration took office in November 2023. His campaign featured an “India-out” stance, calling for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, which was swiftly enacted. Further straining relations, derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Maldivian officials led to backlash and the suspension of those involved.

As Jaishankar’s visit continues, all eyes will be on how these discussions shape the future of India-Maldives relations amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape.

The Indian High Commission in the Maldives confirmed this update in a post on X, stating, “The Government of India has announced the inclusion of two additional ports for the export of essential commodities from India to the Maldives for FY 2024-2025.” Kandla and Vishakhapatnam Customs Sea ports are now added to the existing list of four ports already approved for these exports.

The official notification, referencing the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act of 1992 and the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, outlines the addition of these two ports to the Prohibited/Restricted category for essential commodity exports to the Maldives. This amendment updates Notification No 06/2023, issued on April 15, 2024.

In a related note, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu expressed his condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the tragic landslides in Wayanad, India, which have claimed over 200 lives and caused numerous injuries. Muizzu described the disaster as an “unimaginable tragedy,” highlighting the severe loss of life and widespread devastation resulting from the landslides.

</excerpt>

President Mohamed Muizzu expressed gratitude to India for its support in strengthening the Maldives’ fragile economy, emphasizing the collaboration between the two countries in addressing the Island nation’s looming debt crisis and future development. Speaking at the 59th anniversary of the country’s independence, Muizzu also acknowledged China’s significant role in providing assistance.

“On behalf of the Maldivian people, I thank the Chinese government and the Indian government for their cooperation in strengthening the economy and assuring our economic sovereignty,” Muizzu stated, as reported by Maldivian news portal adhadhu.com.

Shift in Foreign Policy

Muizzu, who rose to power last year with an anti-India campaign, initially sought the removal of around 80 Indian military personnel operating helicopters and Dornier aircraft donated by India. However, his stance has softened, evidenced by his attendance at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony and his praise for India’s Rs 400 crore assistance. This shift comes as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned of a high risk of debt distress in the Maldives without significant policy changes.

China, perceived as a strategic ally under Muizzu’s leadership, scaled up its relations with the Maldives. Early this year, Muizzu visited China, where the two countries elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and signed 20 agreements, including a military assistance pact, causing unease in India.

Loan Restructuring and Economic Relief

In response to the IMF’s warnings, the Muizzu government sought the restructuring of loans from China. Maldives’ debt to China reportedly amounts to over USD 1.3 billion. While Beijing initially expressed reservations about restructuring the debt, Muizzu announced that China has agreed to defer loan repayments for five years, providing significant relief and helping the Maldives avoid a debt default similar to Sri Lanka’s crisis.

A large portion of the loans taken from China’s Exim Bank for development projects during former President Yameen’s government must be repaid in 2026. Technical work on restructuring these loans is ongoing. Muizzu emphasized that foreign policy should protect the country’s independence.

Future Trade Agreements and Economic Initiatives

Muizzu announced the implementation of a free trade agreement (FTA) with China starting in September, which will eliminate tariffs on 7,897 items, including 298 fisheries products. He expressed hope to sign a similar agreement with India and mentioned ongoing efforts to enter FTAs with Turkey and Britain.

To alleviate the dollar shortage and ensure economic sovereignty, the government is also working on currency swap agreements with China and India to support local businesses.

China continues to ramp up its aid to the Maldives, focusing on key infrastructure and renewable energy projects. Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, during his visit to Beijing, signed a Letter of Exchange on the feasibility study for the redevelopment of Male and Villimal Roads Project, aligning with Muizzu’s government pledges.

Shamnaz Saleem, a state minister at the Environment Ministry, and her ex-husband Adam Rameez, a minister at the President’s Office, were detained along with two others. The police have not provided details about the reasons for the arrests or the specifics of the alleged black magic.

According to news portal Sun.mv, Shamnaz and two other individuals were arrested on Sunday and have been remanded in custody for seven days. The Environment Ministry suspended Shamnaz from her post on Wednesday, and Rameez was suspended on Thursday. Both Shamnaz and Rameez had previously worked with President Muizzu on the Male City Council when he was serving as mayor.

After Muizzu assumed office as president in November last year, Shamnaz was initially appointed as a state minister at Muliaage, the official residence of the president, before being transferred to the Environment Ministry. “Rameez, during his time at Male City Council, was known as a close aide of Muizzu, who was the mayor at that time,” reported Maldives’ Sun. “However, he has been absent from the public light in the past five months or so,” it added.

The Maldives government and the President’s Office have not made any official comments regarding the arrests. The police did not officially confirm that they were arrested for practicing ‘black magic’ but accepted that they were investigating a case which involved Shamnaz and two others. The lack of information from the authorities has led to widespread speculation and concern among the public.

Local media reported that Shamnaz, formerly a state minister at the Ministry of Environment, was accused of performing ‘black magic’ to gain proximity to the President.

The incident came to light on June 23, leading to the arrest of Shamnaz, her ex-husband Adam Rameez (formerly a minister at the President’s Office), and two accomplices. They have been remanded in custody for seven days as the investigation progresses. Shamnaz was subsequently suspended from her ministerial position on Wednesday.

Shamnaz and Rameez, both former members of the Male City Council alongside President Muizzu when he served as the city’s mayor, have been implicated in using occult practices following Muizzu’s election as President last year. This marks Modi’s third consecutive term, a feat equaling that of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister.”

The presence of leaders from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Nepal, and Bhutan underscores India’s unwavering commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the visionary ‘SAGAR’ initiative. Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and Vice President of Seychelles, Ahmed Afif arrived yesterday, while others are expected to arrive today.

Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for 7:15 pm, carries significant diplomatic weight, emphasizing India’s strategic partnerships in the region. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the event’s importance, affirming its alignment with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and ‘SAGAR’ vision.

After the ceremony, President Droupadi Murmu will host a banquet at Rashtrapati Bhavan for the dignitaries. Despite speculations regarding the venue, the oath-taking ceremony will take place at Rashtrapati Bhavan due to ongoing weather conditions.

Over 8,000 guests, including laborers, lawyers, doctors, artists, cultural performers, and influencers, are expected to attend, showcasing India’s diverse social fabric. The event necessitated extensive preparations, including deployment of 1,100 traffic police personnel to manage traffic movement.

PM Modi’s invitations to neighboring leaders reflect India’s ongoing efforts to foster regional cooperation. Before the ceremony, PM Modi met President Droupadi Murmu to stake his claim to form the NDA government under his leadership, which was formally endorsed by crucial allies like the Telugu Desam Party and the Janata Dal.

The NDA holds a strong position in the Lok Sabha, commanding 293 MPs out of 543, with the BJP securing the largest share of 240 seats. This inauguration is attended by leaders like Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, who arrived today, expressing his commitment to strengthen bilateral ties with India.

President Muizzu’s visit marks his first official trip to India since assuming office, underscoring the importance of India-Maldives relations. Other foreign leaders attending include those from Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Nepal, and Bhutan, symbolizing the regional significance of Modi’s third term inauguration.

The ceremony represents not only a milestone in Indian politics but also a testament to India’s enduring commitment to fostering strong ties with its neighbors and promoting regional stability and prosperity.

In response to the Maldives’ ban for individuals holding Israeli passports from entering the country, the Israel Embassy in India has extended an invitation to Israeli citizens to visit India and explore its picturesque beaches. Emphasizing the warm welcome and hospitality extended to Israeli tourists in India, the embassy recommended several beautiful destinations.

The Israel Embassy in India shared this invitation on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Since the Maldives is no longer welcoming Israelis, here are some beautiful and amazing Indian beaches where Israeli tourists are warmly welcomed and treated with utmost hospitality. Check out these recommendations from @IsraelinIndia, based on the places visited by our diplomats.”

The embassy suggested various Indian beach destinations, including Goa, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Kerala, accompanied by enticing pictures of these locations.

Israeli Consul General in Mumbai, Kobbi Shoshani, echoed this sentiment by responding to a January post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where PM Modi praised the natural beauty of Lakshadweep. Shoshani remarked, “Thanks to the Maldives Government’s decision, Israelis can now explore the beautiful beaches of #Lakshadweep.”

The Maldives government announced its decision to ban Israeli passport holders on Sunday, with the announcement made by Maldives Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsaan, during a news conference at the President’s Office. The decision is part of a broader effort that includes amending necessary laws and establishing a Cabinet subcommittee to oversee these changes.

The Maldives’ decision comes amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which began on October 7 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel. In response, Israel has vowed to dismantle Hamas. The Maldives government has also expressed support for Palestinians, with President Mohamed Muizzu appointing a special envoy to assess Palestinian needs and initiating a fundraising campaign to aid Palestinians, coordinated with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

The conflict has drawn international attention, with US President Joe Biden announcing that Israel has proposed a “comprehensive new proposal” for a ceasefire with Hamas, mediated by Qatar. This proposal includes a six-week ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the exchange of hostages and prisoners.

As tensions continue, the Israel Embassy in India’s call for its citizens to explore Indian beaches serves as a reminder of the broader geopolitical dynamics affecting travel and tourism in the region.

</excerpt>

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Israeli citizens currently residing in the Maldives to consider leaving the country. This advisory comes after the Maldivian government announced its decision to amend laws, effectively banning Israeli nationals from entering the nation.

Quoted by Xinhua news agency, the Ministry expressed concerns over potential difficulties in assisting Israeli citizens should they encounter any trouble while in the Maldives. It further recommended that Israeli citizens avoid traveling to the Muslim-majority island nation, regardless of whether they possess a second passport from another country.

The entry ban targeting Israelis was enacted during a cabinet meeting held in the Maldives on Sunday. The decision was reportedly made in response to calls from local citizens, citing recent Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip as the rationale behind the move.

According to Maldivian media, the country hosts over one million tourists annually, with approximately 15,000 visitors originating from Israel.

In the backdrop of strained bilateral relations, India provided financial assistance to the Maldives on Monday. The State Bank of India subscribed to government securities worth USD 50 million under a “unique Government-to-Government arrangement at zero cost (interest-free).” This move followed President Muizzu’s decision to remove Indian troops from the island nation amid deteriorating ties, worsened by derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Modi made by some Maldives ministers.

This act of goodwill by the Indian government was in response to a special request from the Maldives government seeking budgetary support. The subscription by SBI to Maldives’ treasury bills is part of an ongoing bilateral financial mechanism.

Announcing the development, the Indian High Commission conveyed through X:

“The State Bank of India has extended its subscription for another year to the USD 50 million Government Treasury Bill issued by the Ministry of Finance of Maldives, following the maturity of the previous subscription. These Treasury Bills are subscribed by SBI under a distinctive Government-to-Government agreement, bearing zero cost (interest-free) for the Government of Maldives. The decision to continue the subscription was made at the special request of the Maldives government, aiming to obtain budgetary assistance from the Government of India.”

Expressing appreciation, the Maldives also extended gratitude to the Government of India for the recent financial assistance, marking a rare display of thankfulness. The official press release, shared by the foreign minister of the island nation, characterized it as a “genuine act of goodwill” that underscores the enduring friendship between Maldives and India.

In a tweet, Foreign Minister of Maldives, Moosa Zameer, conveyed gratitude to EAM Dr. S Jaishankar and the Government of India for providing essential budgetary support to the Maldives through the rollover of USD 50 million Treasury Bill.

A Treasury bill, commonly known as a T-bill, is a type of short-term debt issued by the government. These bills are usually sold at a price lower than their face value and do not offer interest payments similar to traditional bonds. Instead, investors purchase them at a discounted rate and receive the full face value when they mature.

</excerpt>

Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, during his official visit to India, assured on Thursday that steps are being taken to prevent the recurrence of ‘derogatory remarks’ against India. Zameer, as reported by newswire ANI, expressed that both the Maldives and India have moved beyond the issue and are addressing it appropriately.

“We have acknowledged that such remarks do not reflect the stance of our government, and we are committed to ensuring they do not happen again. There was a misunderstanding on social media, which we are resolving. Both governments understand the situation and are moving forward,” Zameer stated to ANI.

The relationship between the two countries faced strain when former Maldivian ministers made disparaging comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his visit to Lakshadweep. Further tensions arose when Mohamed Muizzu set a deadline of May 10 for Indian military personnel to leave the Maldives.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed with Moosa Zameer the importance of enhancing bilateral engagement and cooperation between India and the Maldives, emphasizing mutual interests.

Following the meeting, Zameer shared on X that they exchanged views on enhancing ties and collaboration bilaterally and internationally.

Addressing declining tourism, Zameer highlighted the Maldives’ warm welcome to Indian tourists, expressing confidence in the resurgence of Indian visitors in the near future, despite recent fluctuations.

Regarding maritime security, Zameer emphasized the shared interest of India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and neighbouring countries in maintaining peace and security in the Indian Ocean.

Regarding economic cooperation, Zameer underscored the significance of economic ties with India for the Maldivian economy and expressed gratitude for the support received from the Indian government through debt relief and grants. </excerpt>

The Foreign Minister of Maldives, Moosa Zameer, expressed optimism regarding the decline in Indian tourist figures, highlighting the country’s enduring appeal and potential for growth in tourism.

Zameer acknowledged the recent decrease in Indian tourist numbers but emphasized the welcoming attitude of Maldives towards Indian travelers. He cited the ongoing election cycles in both Maldives and India as a temporary factor affecting tourism, noting that such phases are expected to pass soon.

Reflecting on historical trends, Zameer pointed out that Indian tourists have been a crucial market for Maldives over the years, with significant growth seen especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite recent fluctuations, he highlighted a recent increase in tourist numbers and expressed confidence in a future uptick.

The minister’s remarks underscored the resilience of Maldives’ tourism sector and the strong ties between India and Maldives in the travel domain. With ongoing efforts to promote tourism and improve travel experiences, Zameer’s positive outlook suggests a promising trajectory for Indian tourist figures in the near future.

As travel restrictions ease and global conditions stabilize, the Maldives remains an attractive destination for Indian tourists, offering a blend of natural beauty, hospitality, and unique experiences. Zameer’s comments serve as a reassurance to the travel industry and travelers alike, signaling a hopeful outlook for tourism recovery in the Maldives.

</excerpt>

India and Maldives convened their fourth bilateral High-Level Core Group meeting on Friday, where they assessed the timeline for withdrawing Indian military personnel from the Maldives by May 10. The government affirmed its commitment to complete the replacement of military personnel before the specified date.

Previously, the Maldives government under Mohamed Muizzu formally requested India to withdraw its troops from Male. Both nations’ foreign ministries stated that they discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including development and defence cooperation.

They expressed satisfaction with India’s progress in replacing military personnel stationed at the last of the three aviation platforms by May 10, ensuring logistical arrangements proceed smoothly. Additionally, they agreed to hold the fifth High-Level Core Group meeting in Male during June or July.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced that the initial batch of Indian personnel in the Maldives had been substituted with technical personnel. Both countries have collaborated on viable solutions to sustain the operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medical evacuation services to Maldivian citizens.

The MEA confirmed the deployment of the first batch of Indian technical personnel to replace defence personnel in the Maldives. India and Maldives have already conducted two high-level core group meetings, with the third anticipated soon.

The withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives was a key campaign promise of Muizzu’s party. Currently, approximately 70 Indian troops, along with Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft and two HAL Dhruv helicopters, are stationed in the Maldives.

</excerpt>

After Hong Kong and Singapore, the Maldives has banned the sale of Indian spice brands Everest and MDH in the country. Maldives’ food and drug authority said that the two brands of spices produced in India have been found to contain ethylene oxide, news organisation Adhadhu reported, adding that ethylene oxide is used to fumigate agricultural products and is not recommended for use in food products due to its potential adverse health effects.

The MFDA also noted that the Singapore Food Agency and Hong Kong’s Center for Food Safety have advised consumers against using the products. The authority said the spices of these brands are imported and used in large quantities in Maldives and they were conducting a risk assessment.

Earlier this month, Hong Kong and Singapore banned the sale of MDH and Everest, claiming that they detected the presence of carcinogenic pesticide ethylene oxide in several spice mixes. Hong Kong’s Center for Food Safety (CFS) asked consumers not to buy and traders not to sell MDH’s Madras Curry Powder (spice blend for Madras curry), Everest Fish Curry Masala, MDH Sambhar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, and MDH Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder.

Singapore ordered a recall of the Everest spice mix, saying it contains high levels of ethylene oxide, which is unfit for human consumption and a cancer risk with long exposure.

In a statement on Saturday, MDH rejected the allegations of the presence of certain pesticides in some products and said its products are 100 per cent safe. The masala maker said it has not received any communications from Hong Kong and Singapore food safety regulators. The company also said that the Spice Board of India and food regulator FSSAI have not received any communication or test reports from Hong Kong or Singapore.

“This reinforces the fact that the allegations against MDH are baseless, unsubstantiated, and not backed by any concrete evidence. MDH reassures its buyers and customers about the safety and quality of all its products. We reassure our buyers and consumers that we do not use Ethylene Oxide (ETO) at any stage of storing, processing, or packing our spices,” the statement said.

</excerpt>

Maldives voters have handed President Mohamed Muizzu’s People’s National Congress (PNC)a resounding victory in parliamentary elections, with preliminary results showing the party winning 65 of the 93 seats up for grabs. This outcome, as reported by media on Monday, is expected to steer the Indian Ocean archipelago closer to China and away from its traditional partner India.

The Maldives Elections Commission and media projections revealed that the main opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) saw a significant decrease, securing only 12 seats compared to its previous 65 seats.

The strategic importance of the Maldives has drawn attention from both Beijing and New Delhi, with each vying for influence in the Indo-Pacific region. President Muizzu, elected last year, has indicated a shift away from the country’s longstanding “India First” policy, causing strains in its relationship with New Delhi.

Under Muizzu’s leadership, the government has taken steps such as asking dozens of Indian military personnel to leave the Maldives. Critics argue that this move could expedite the country’s alignment towards China, given Beijing’s increasing presence and investments in the region.

It’s worth noting that Muizzu’s position as president remains unaffected by the parliamentary election results. A total of 368 candidates contested for five-year terms in Sunday’s vote, reflecting a significant political landscape change in the Maldives.

The landslide victory for Muizzu’s party signals a clear mandate from the Maldivian electorate, indicating a potential shift in foreign policy priorities and alliances in the coming years. As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve in the Indo-Pacific, the outcome of the elections will likely have ramifications on regional dynamics and diplomatic relations.

The parliamentary elections witnessed the participation of over 200,000 voters, with 326 candidates vying for 93 seats in the upcoming parliamentary assembly, which includes the addition of six new seats. Among the contenders, candidates from the ruling party of Maldives contested 90 seats.

Other participating parties included 89 candidates from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), 39 from the Democrats, 10 from the Jumhoory Party (JP), four from the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), four from the Adhaalath Party (AP), two from the Maldives National Party (MNP), along with 130 independent candidates.

Preliminary results indicate that President Mohamed Muizzu’s PNC has clinched victory in over 60 seats, representing roughly two-thirds of the total seats. This count excludes independent candidates supported by the party, as well as candidates from the MNP and MDA, both allied with the ruling coalition.

It’s worth noting that in the 2019 elections, the then-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured a supermajority with 64 seats, while the opposition PPM-PNC coalition managed only eight seats, as reported by Sun Online.

In the 2014 elections, the then-ruling PPM secured a majority, according to Sun Online. The only ruling party unable to secure a majority was the MDP in the 2009 elections.

Significant tensions arose between India and the Maldives following President Mohamed Muizzu’s assumption of office. He openly criticized India during and after the presidential elections, and his administration formally requested the withdrawal of Indian troops from Male.

However, in a shift of stance in March, Muizzu appealed to New Delhi for debt relief measures, reaffirming India’s status as the Maldives’ “closest ally,” as per local media reports. He emphasized that he had refrained from taking any actions or making statements that could strain the bilateral relationship.

During an interview with local media outlet ‘Mihaaru,’ Muizzu expressed hope that India would consider accommodating debt relief measures for the Maldives, particularly in light of the substantial loans acquired from India by consecutive administrations. He stressed the importance of continuing ongoing projects without interruption and expressed optimism about maintaining positive Maldives-India relations.

</excerpt>

Indian tourist arrivals in the Maldives have decreased by 33 percent compared to last year, as per data from the Maldives Tourism Ministry reported by Maldivian website Adhadhu.

This decline coincides with the ongoing diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Male. According to the Tourism Ministry’s 2023 statistics, 41,054 Indian tourists had visited the Maldives by March 4 last year. However, as of March 2 this year, only 27,224 Indian tourists had been recorded, reflecting a decrease of 13,830.

Last year, India held the second-largest market share for Maldivian tourism at 10 percent, but it has now dropped to sixth place with a six percent share.

The diplomatic rift emerged following derogatory comments made by three Maldivian deputy ministers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep and his proposals for developing it as a beach tourism destination.

This led to a significant diplomatic confrontation, with New Delhi lodging a strong protest and summoning the Maldivian envoy. The three deputy ministers were subsequently suspended pending further action.

Additionally, concerns arose within the Maldives tourism industry as Indian celebrities lent support to a boycott campaign, prompting the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) to conduct a survey on the impact of Indian booking cancellations. However, the survey findings were not disclosed publicly, as reported by Adhadhu.

Despite the decline in Indian tourism, the Maldives continues to attract visitors from other markets. China has now become the leading market, with over 54,000 tourist arrivals recorded this year, surpassing India’s historical dominance in the Maldivian tourism sector, which saw over 200,000 Indian tourists annually from 2021 to 2023.

</excerpt>

According to a recent media report, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has escalated his criticism of India, affirming that no Indian military personnel, not even those dressed in civilian attire, will be in his country after May 10. This statement follows the arrival of an Indian civilian team in the Maldives to take control of one of the three aviation platforms, well ahead of the March 10 deadline agreed upon for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel.

President Muizzu made these remarks during his visit to the Baa atoll Eydhafushi residential community, emphasizing the successful expulsion of Indian troops and dismissing rumors about their continued presence in civilian clothing. He assured that Indian troops, whether in uniform or civilian attire, would not remain in the country after May 10, despite signing a military aid agreement with China on the same day.

The Maldivian Foreign Ministry previously announced that India would replace its military personnel operating the three aviation platforms by May 10, with the first phase completed by March 10. Mr. Muizzu, known for his anti-India stance, demanded the removal of Indian personnel from the archipelago soon after assuming office last year. According to reports, Indian military personnel stationed in various locations are expected to depart before the May 10 deadline.

</excerpt>

Rolling around the diplomatic clash with India, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has asked India to withdraw its military troops from the archipelago nation by March 15. This means that no Indian military will be allowed in Maldives after March 15.

According to the government data, there are about 88 Indian military personnel in Maldives. This decision comes days after President Muizzu returned from China.

A minor presence of the Indian military was present for several years in the Maldives after the request of the previous Maldivian government to primarily assist with marine security and disaster relief.

However, the relationship between the two countries rusted after two Maldives serving employees made a derogatory remark on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his visit to the Indian Island – Lakshadweep. After which the netizens started comparing the two or say boycotting Maldives.

Amid Muizzu’s recent visit to China, he indirectly took a jibe on India over the recent clash. He, without using the name of any country said, “We may be small, but that doesn’t give you the license to bully us”.

He added, “We aren’t in anyone’s backyard. We are an independent and sovereign state.”

Several social media influencers and actors have stood up in boycotting Maldives and supporting the Indian Island Lakshadweep.
