</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit. This marks his first official visit to Asia since taking office in January 2025.

Washington Refocuses on the Indo-Pacific

After months of concentrating on the Russia-Ukraine war and the West Asia crisis, the US is turning its attention back to Asia.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed this shift. She said, “In his first trip to Asia as Secretary of State, Secretary Rubio is focused on reaffirming the United States’ commitment to advancing a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region.”

US Sees Strategic Value in Southeast Asia

A senior official emphasized that it is “in America’s interest” to remain committed to East and Southeast Asia. President Trump has received advice to prioritize this region, especially due to China’s growing influence.

Meanwhile, recent efforts by Vice President JD Vance and Defense Undersecretary Elbridge Colby have pushed the US to scale down involvement in West Asia.

Trump’s New Tariffs Raise Regional Concerns

Rubio’s visit comes shortly after Trump imposed fresh tariffs on several Asian countries. These include a 25% tariff on Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, and a 40% tariff on goods from Laos.

These new tariffs will likely dominate discussions at the summit. The senior official told The Business Times that Rubio will assure ASEAN leaders the US wants to “rebalance” trade relationships, not disrupt them.

Rubio Postpones Japan and South Korea Legs

Originally, Rubio planned to begin his Asia trip with visits to Japan and South Korea. However, he postponed those meetings to stay involved in Gaza ceasefire talks, Nikkei reported.

In Japan, Rubio had scheduled talks with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. They were set to discuss tariffs, West Asian conflicts, and security threats from China, Russia, and North Korea.

</excerpt>

Malaysia has dismantled a terror network that had recruited Bangladeshi migrant workers and financed the Islamic State group using social media and digital payments. Authorities detained 36 individuals since April and indicate that additional suspects are still being investigated.

The crackdown comes at the height of a regional slowdown in militant arrests but indicates ongoing threats in migrant-dominated industries.

Police Confirm Radical Recruitment

Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail made the operation announcement on a televised press conference. He said Malaysian authorities arrested all 36 Bangladeshi nationals who worked in factories, construction, or service sectors. The group reportedly employed social media sites and encrypted messaging applications to recruit other Bangladeshi workers and indoctrinate them with Islamic State ideology.

The network, as per police intelligence, also collected donations from sympathizers. They remitted the funds through e-wallets and international remittance services to Islamic State-affiliated groups in Syria and Bangladesh.

Several Arrests and Deportations in Progress

Malaysian authorities have charged five of the 36 suspects arrested since April with membership in a terrorist organization under national law. They will deport 15 others for lesser involvement. Police continue to detain the remaining 16, actively interrogating them. Investigators also expect to make more arrests in the coming weeks.

Mohd Khalid stated, “We will repatriate those with low involvement to their home country, but those with high involvement will be charged according to Malaysian laws.” Police estimate that 100 to 150 individuals may have links to this radical cell.

Wider Implications for Migrant Workforce

Malaysia, where migrant workers dominate its workforce, particularly from Bangladesh, has become more wary of the threat of radicalization of foreign workers. Although significant militant activity had ceased since the 2016 Islamic State-linked attack in Kuala Lumpur, new methods of digital recruitment and financing pose a serious threat, according to authorities.

Use of encrypted remittance channels and apps makes it harder to surveil, leading Malaysian intelligence agencies to step up surveillance of online networks and financial transactions associated with suspected radicals.

Regional Security Under Threat

This case highlights the need for more robust regional counterterrorism coordination and migrant monitoring. Law enforcement authorities in Malaysia as well as Bangladesh will likely enhance coordination to stop similar networks from flourishing across borders.

As the probe goes on, Malaysia remains vigilant. Malaysia will step up checks on foreign workers, especially in industries with little background screening.

</excerpt>

Despite intense pressure from the Pakistani embassy, Malaysia refused to halt Indian outreach programs, which was a glaring diplomatic setback for Islamabad. Citing their common Islamic identity, the Pakistani mission urged Malaysian authorities to cancel all ten of the events planned by the Indian delegation, which was led by JDU MP Sanjay Jha. However, Malaysia, denied the appeal and permitted the programs to continue under India’s Operation Sindoor initiative.

Before the Indian delegation’s arrival, Pakistani authorities tried to sabotage the initiative. They went to Malaysian authorities and said, “We are an Islamic country, you are an Islamic country. don’t listen to the Indian delegation.” The appeal sought to cancel all ten events scheduled in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia Stands Firm

Malaysia rejected Pakistan’s request. Authorities granted completely clearance for all the ten programmes scheduled. Sources informed that Malaysia would not associate diplomacy with religious feelings. It also listed the Kashmir dispute’s current status in the United Nations as a reason not to meddle.

Malaysia was the last leg in a five-country diplomatic visit involving Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Indonesia. The nine-member Indian team that arrived on Saturday in Kuala Lumpur met leaders from Malaysia’s People’s Justice Party (PKR). The PKR delegation was headed by YB Sim Tze Tzin, who was once a cabinet minister under Mahathir Mohamad.

Cross-Party Indian Team in Action

Among the Indian delegation were MPs from both sides of the political divide—BJP’s Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lal, Pradan Baruah, and Hemang Joshi; TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee, CPM’s John Brittas, Congress’s Salman Khurshid, and ex-Indian diplomat Mohan Kumar.

They emphasized India’s determination during Operation Sindoor and its stringent zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.

PoK, Terror Strikes Discussed

The delegation informed Malaysian leaders of India’s precision attacks on terror launchpads in Pakistan. They described India’s “new normal” in addressing cross-border terror threats. Addressing a Sunday function with the Indian diaspora in Kuala Lumpur, TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee announced that India would hold discussions only with Pakistan if it surrendered Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

On his return from the tour, Sanjay Jha informed PTI that all five nations condoled the Pahalgam terror attack victims. He said political leaders in other countries valued India’s specific response to terror infrastructure, reinforcing international legitimacy of Operation Sindoor.

</excerpt>

In a first in history, the Tianhou Temple in southern Malaysia’s Johor state has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s first AI Mazu statue. The digital image of the revered Chinese sea goddess Mazu can talk to the faithful, answer questions, and bestow blessings, blending centuries-old customs with cutting-edge artificial intelligence. The introduction of AI Mazu occurs with the sea goddess’s 1,065th birthday celebration, the culmination of the intersection of religion and technology.

The AI Mazu: A New Digital Deity

The Mazu statue, powered by artificial intelligence, is a groundbreaking initiative created by the Malaysian technology firm Aimazin, famous for its AI cloning business. Worshippers at the Tianhou Temple can now talk to an AI god with a goddess figure on a screen wearing traditional Chinese clothing. The AI Mazu answers questions, reads fortune sticks, and even offers divine advice. For example, when asked by the founder of the temple, Shin Kong, whether he would receive luck for unexpected fortune, the AI Mazu told him to remain at home for improved fortune. In another example, a sleepless influencer was kindly advised by the AI Mazu to drink warm water before sleeping.

This project is an ideal blend of old religious custom and new technology. The virtual goddess is not just a technological innovation in AI but also an attempt at keeping the Mazu faith and bringing it up to date, so that it is now available to the whole world through the digital platform.

Honoring Mazu’s Ageless Tradition with Innovation

The development of Mazu coincides with the 1,065th birthday of the sea goddess, a celebration that is attended by millions of devotees globally. Mazu, born as Lin Mo on Meizhou Island in Fujian province, China, in 960, is revered for her legendary bravery and her protection of sailors. Posthumously, she was deified and made into a powerful protector deity of seas. Mazu remains very culturally and spiritually significant to Chinese populations, particularly those in Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia.

With this new fusion of tradition and technology, the Tianhou Temple is not only keeping Mazu’s memory alive but also reaching a new generation of younger, more tech-oriented believers who might not otherwise participate in traditional religious ceremonies. By making AI part of religious worship, the temple opens a new way for individuals to seek spiritual direction while remaining in touch with their heritage.

Implications for the Future of Religion and Technology

The creation of AI Mazu also raises intriguing questions regarding the future of religion in a world of digitalization. As technology continues to assert itself in every aspect of life, will AI be capable of replacing or augmenting spiritual experience? The introduction of AI Mazu is one step towards integrating technology and traditional belief systems, providing an alternative way of experiencing faith through the benefits of AI. The question is—will this worship technological revolution be a driving force for further acceptance of AI in religious venues around the world?

As lines between the virtual and spiritual become increasingly blurred, AI Mazu may be the beginning of a new era in religious practice where technology and faith exist together and flourish together.

</excerpt>

Marriage customs vary widely across the globe, with some being truly unique and surprising. Among the most unusual traditions is one followed by the Tidong tribe, an indigenous community in the Borneo region of Indonesia and Malaysia. According to their customs, newlyweds are forbidden from using the toilet for three days after their wedding, a practice believed to safeguard their marital purity and ensure a lasting bond.

A Test of Purity and Commitment

For the Tidong people, marriage is more than just a union between two individuals; it is a sacred bond that must remain pure. They believe that if a bride and groom use the toilet within the first three days of their marriage, it could bring misfortune, impurity, or even the risk of separation and death. To prevent this, the couple is kept under strict supervision by family members, and in some cases, they are confined to a room to ensure compliance.

Spiritual and Superstitious Beliefs

The tribe also holds a belief that toilets contain negative energies that could harm the couple’s relationship. They fear that exposure to such negative forces during the early days of marriage might lead to disputes, discord, or a troubled union. As a preventive measure, the couple is given minimal food and water to reduce the need for restroom use.

Health Risks and Cultural Significance

While the Tidong people deeply respect this custom, health experts warn that refraining from bodily functions for such an extended period can have severe health consequences, including infections and digestive issues. Despite these risks, the community continues to uphold this tradition, considering it a crucial ritual for a successful marriage.

Celebration After the Challenge

Once the three-day period ends, the newlyweds celebrate their endurance and commitment, believing that their adherence to the tradition will bring them a long and happy married life. Though this practice may seem extreme to outsiders, for the Tidong people, it is an essential part of their rich cultural heritage.

While customs like these may appear unusual, they highlight the diverse ways in which different cultures perceive marriage and commitment. The Tidong tribe’s belief in purity and spiritual protection showcases the deep-rooted traditions that continue to shape societies today.

</excerpt>

In an unusual but fascinating business venture, a man in Malaysia has launched a “villain-for-hire” service, offering to play the antagonist so others can step in as the hero in front of their partners. Shazali Sulaiman, 28, from Ipoh, has gained viral attention after promoting his service on social media, claiming that for a small fee, he can help clients boost their masculinity and impress their significant others by “taking them down” in staged confrontations.

According to a report by South China Morning Post, Sulaiman’s offer read: “Are you tired of your partner thinking you are weak? For a reasonable fee, I can help you prove them wrong.”

Clients only need to provide a time and place, and Sulaiman will show up to “harass” their partner, giving the client the chance to “save the day.” Sulaiman, who is often told he resembles a gangster, even posted a photo of himself with messy hair and an unlit cigarette to enhance his tough-guy image. He was inspired to turn the idea into a business after people frequently commented that he looked like a gang member, SCMP reported.

The “villain-for-hire” service costs 100 ringgit (approximately 1,800 INR) on weekdays and 150 ringgit (around 2,800 INR) on weekends, with additional charges for clients outside the city. Sulaiman, who has already helped friends and family, offers his service to both men and women.

Sulaiman shared an example of a man who hired him at a shopping centre. When the boyfriend went to the bathroom, Sulaiman pretended to harass his girlfriend. Upon his return, the boyfriend confronted Sulaiman, playing the hero.

While some netizens have expressed concerns that the service could lead to legal issues, particularly regarding sexual harassment charges, Sulaiman insists that everything is staged and harmless, likening it to WWE-style scripted performances.
Malaysia has seen a 45% rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, according to the latest government report. In 2024, 327 new cases were recorded, up from 225 in 2023. This rise follows a similar surge in respiratory illnesses in China.

Health Ministry Calls for Caution

The Malaysian Health Ministry urges the public to stay vigilant. They note that extreme weather conditions will continue to cause respiratory infections. Authorities advise good hygiene practices, such as washing hands, wearing masks, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Despite the increase, officials say these seasonal spikes in respiratory infections are typical at the start and end of the year.

China Faces HMPV Surge

China, especially the northern regions, is experiencing a sharp rise in HMPV cases. Social media shows people wearing masks in hospitals. However, Chinese authorities downplay the situation, calling it a “winter occurrence.” They reassure the public that it’s safe to travel to China. The surge, though, has raised concerns globally, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

India Monitors the Situation

India is closely watching the rise in HMPV cases. The Health Ministry held a meeting to assess the situation. However, officials emphasize that there is no cause for alarm. “Metapneumovirus is like any other respiratory virus that causes the common cold. It may cause flu-like symptoms in young and elderly people,” said an official. India has not seen a significant increase in cases in 2024.

What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?

HMPV often causes cold-like symptoms and upper respiratory infections. In some cases, it can lead to pneumonia, asthma flare-ups, or worsen chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Rarely, it can be fatal. HMPV is most common in winter and early spring. Most people contract it before age five. However, symptoms tend to be mild after the first infection.

Symptoms of HMPV

HMPV symptoms include:

Severe cough

High fever

Runny or stuffy nose

Sore throat

Wheezing and breathlessness

Rashes

How HMPV Spreads and Who Is at Risk

HMPV spreads through direct contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces. Coughing, sneezing, shaking hands, and hugging can spread the virus. Those at higher risk for severe illness include:

Children under 5 and adults over 60

People with weakened immune systems

Individuals with asthma or COPD

How to Prevent HMPV

To prevent HMPV and other infections, follow these steps:

Wash hands frequently with soap and water

Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue

Avoid close contact with sick people

Wear a mask in crowded places

Don’t touch your face, eyes, nose, or mouth

Don’t share food or utensils

These simple measures can help reduce the spread of HMPV.

</excerpt>

The disappearance of MH370, a Malaysia Airlines flight, on March 8, 2014, is one of the most puzzling aviation mysteries. The Boeing 777, carrying 239 passengers, was on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it vanished. Despite satellite data indicating the plane likely crashed in the southern Indian Ocean, extensive searches have yielded no significant results.

The Final Moments of MH370

The last communication from MH370 happened 40 minutes after the aircraft took off, as Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah was heard saying, “Good night, Malaysian three seven zero,” as the aircraft entered Vietnamese air space. Within minutes after that, the plane’s transponder was deactivated, which prevented further tracking. The military radar tracked the plane as it veered off the flight path and crossed northern Malaysia, Penang Island, and the Andaman Sea into the southern Indian Ocean where it vanished.

Underwater Search Efforts

The underwater search was launched by Malaysia, Australia, and China over 120,000 square kilometers (46,332 square miles) of the southern Indian Ocean based on satellite data. It was conducted at a cost of approximately A$200 million (US$143 million). The search was stopped in January 2017 with no significant results. A follow-up search by U.S. company Ocean Infinity, launched under a “no-cure, no-fee” agreement, also proved fruitless after covering an additional 112,000 square kilometers, concluding in May 2018.

Evidence

More than 30 pieces of suspected debris from MH370 have been found along the coasts of Africa and Indian Ocean islands. Only three wing fragments have been confirmed to belong to the missing plane, while the rest of the debris was analyzed by drift patterns in an attempt to locate the crash site.

Findings from the Report

A 495-page comprehensive report released in July 2018 concluded that the plane’s course was altered deliberately, though the investigators could not determine who was responsible. The report also highlighted the mistakes committed by the air traffic control centers in Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City and made recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future. But it said that finding the wreckage was essential to determining the cause of the disappearance.

Theories and Speculations

The mystery, which is still ongoing, has led to many conspiracy theories, such as mechanical failure, a remote-controlled crash, or even alien abduction. Some experts believe that it was a deliberate diversion of the plane’s course by a skilled pilot. However, they found no evidence of suspicious activities or mental health issues in the crew.

Search Efforts Set to Resume

Malaysia’s transport minister has recently confirmed that the government will restart the search for MH370, as proposed by Ocean Infinity. If significant wreckage is found, the company will receive $70 million. The new search area is expanded by 15,000 square kilometers compared to the previous one, and it will last 18 months, with the optimal search period being between January and April.

</excerpt>

A 67-year-old woman from Malaysia was cheated of more than RM2.2 million (approximately INR 4.3 crore) over nearly ten years, falling prey to a long-running love scam without ever meeting the scammer. The woman first got in touch with the fraudster on Facebook in October 2017 when he introduced himself as an American businessman in Singapore involved in the procurement of medical equipment. After a month of online communication, they started an online relationship.

He frequently asked her for cash because of personal and business issues. She remitted a total of 306 transfers to 50 account holders. The total amount she was duped of is RM2,210,692.60, including loans the woman took from her families and friends. During this entire communication process, at no point did the girl see the guy in face-to-face communication or through video calling; all communication happened through the voice call.

It was only last November this year, after discussing her experiences with a friend, that the woman realized she had been scammed.

This case may be the longest-running love scam involving a single victim, said Comm Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, Director of Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department. He urged the public to be cautious when engaging in online relationships, especially when money is involved. “Do not rush into ‘serious’ relationships. Be sceptical when it seems too good to be true and when someone quickly pushes for a serious relationship. Question intentions, especially when a new relationship involves requests for money or personal details,” he advised.

The moment captured on video has been widely circulated online, leaving viewers stunned.

The New Straits Times reports that the python was probably straying in from an oil palm plantation next door. The incident occurred about 8 PM on November 22, and the family immediately called the Taiping District Civil Defence Force, a component of Malaysia’s civil defense agency, Angkatan Pertahanan Awam or APM.

In a desperate bid to catch the giant snake, rescue officers had to partially demolish the living room ceiling. The viral video starts with a snake catcher using a rod to remove the python. Moments later, the massive reptile falls through the ceiling onto the sofa, leaving viewers petrified as it slithers across the living room.

</excerpt>

Malaysia facing severe flooding as torrential rains have led to the evacuation of more than 80,000 people across multiple states, with three fatalities reported. Officials have warned that this year’s monsoon season could bring the worst flooding the country has experienced in a decade.

Flooding is a recurrent issue during the monsoon season, which spans from October to March, particularly along the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. However, heavy downpours this week have exacerbated the situation, triggering large-scale evacuations, especially in Kelantan, a northeastern state bordering Thailand.

As of Friday morning, the National Disaster Command Centre reported that 80,589 residents had been relocated to 467 temporary shelters across seven states. Kelantan and the neighboring state of Terengganu have been the hardest hit. While details about the three casualties have not been disclosed, the scale of the disaster has raised significant concern.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, warned that the current flooding could surpass the devastation of 2014, when nearly 250,000 people were displaced. “Given the gravity of the situation, all resources have been deployed to safeguard the lives and well-being of those affected,” Ahmad Zahid said, as reported by the state news agency Bernama.

The government has mobilized over 82,000 security personnel and dispatched rescue equipment, including boats, four-wheel drive vehicles, and helicopters, to aid in evacuation and relief efforts.

Meanwhile, KTM Berhad, the national railway operator, announced the suspension of nine train routes on the east coast due to the flooding.

The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy rainfall persisting through Friday and cautioned that the monsoon surge could bring prolonged downpours until December 1.

As the nation braces for further weather challenges, authorities continue to prioritize the safety and welfare of those in flood-stricken areas.

</excerpt>

In a poignant and alarming story from Shah Alam, near Kuala Lumpur, a father took the extreme step of setting his son’s motorcycle on fire to shield him from potential life-threatening accidents. According to a report by SCMP, referencing Sin Chew Daily, the father, whose identity remains undisclosed, had initially purchased the motorbike to provide his son with a convenient way to commute to school. However, his well-intended gesture quickly spiraled into concern when it became evident that the young man, whose age was not revealed, developed a dangerous obsession with riding.

Rather than using the bike for its intended purpose, the son began participating in illegal motorbike races, often returning home late at night. His reckless actions alarmed his father, who made several unsuccessful attempts to dissuade him from such risky behavior. Feeling increasingly desperate and worried about his son’s safety, the father ultimately decided that the only way to protect his child was to destroy the motorbike. By removing the source of danger, he hoped to prevent a potential fatal accident.

This incident mirrors another story of a father’s love and protective instincts. In 2018, Dean Jones showed extraordinary courage during a motor racing accident involving his son, Mike. During a race, Mike crashed his vehicle, which caught fire. Reacting quickly, Dean jumped over the pit wall and rushed towards the burning car before any safety personnel could intervene. Despite the immense danger, he managed to pull Mike from the wreckage moments before the car exploded due to a fuel leak. Dean’s quick thinking and selfless bravery saved his son’s life, further illustrating the lengths a father will go to protect his child—whether through destruction or heroic actions.

Both stories highlight the deep love and protective instincts fathers have, willing to take extreme actions to safeguard their children, even if it means risking their own well-being or taking drastic measures.

Opened in 1994 with a capacity of 80,372, the new facility will have a reduced capacity of 35,000 to 45,000 and feature advanced amenities, expected to complete by 2029.
</excerpt>

The iconic Shah Alam Stadium in Malaysia, which once welcomed football giants like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur, has been demolished in a dramatic display. Originally boasting a capacity of 80,372, the stadium was deemed structurally unsafe in 2020.

Plans for a state-of-the-art sports complex are underway, with the new facility expected to accommodate between 35,000 and 45,000 spectators. Since its inauguration in 1994, the stadium served as the home ground for the Malaysian football team Selangor and regularly hosted national matches, as well as live performances from major artists, including Bon Jovi in 1995.

The famous Shah Alam stadium, which held up to 80,000 people, was epically blown up in Malaysia

One of the largest stadiums in the world recognized as emergency in 2020. It was ordered to be demolished.

Complete dismantling will be completed next year. pic.twitter.com/8V7WipeZZC

The stadium’s opening event took place on July 19, 1994, featuring Dundee United and a Selangor XI in an invitational tournament that also included teams like Bayern Munich, Leeds United, Flamengo, and the Australian Olympic football team. On that day, former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar played for the Malaysian side, but it was Dundee’s Billy McKinlay who scored the first goal in the stadium’s history.

Over the years, the venue has been a hotspot for live music, hosting renowned bands such as Maroon 5 and Deep Purple, and marking Bon Jovi’s debut performance in Malaysia.

The forthcoming sports complex will feature advanced amenities, including a retractable pitch, indoor humidity control, and an “event mode” to accommodate concerts and other live events. The dismantling of the old stadium is expected to be completed by next year, while the new venue is anticipated to open by 2029.

The arrests followed allegations of sexual abuse at charity homes run by the conglomerate. The police raid targeted four locations in Kuala Lumpur, with additional detentions at the Thai border.

Nasiruddin, along with his two wives, children, and relatives of the late Malaysian preacher Ashaari Mohamed, were among those arrested. GISB, linked to a banned sect, denies managing the shelters, although over 400 children rescued from the homes showed signs of abuse and neglect.

The detained individuals face charges of sexual assault at a religious school in Negeri Sembilan, with maximum penalties including 20 years in prison and caning. Police have also charged two others in connection with the investigation, which includes inquiries into money laundering and religious offences.

GISB operates globally in sectors ranging from retail to travel services. The company’s representative did not respond to requests for comment, and Nasiruddin and his lawyer were unavailable.

The investigation revealed severe exploitation, including sexual abuse and neglect. The group, previously linked to a banned sect, denies the allegations but faces scrutiny from Islamic authorities.
</excerpt>

On Wednesday, Malaysian authorities conducted a major operation that led to the rescue of 402 children and the arrest of 171 suspects. The raids targeted 20 welfare homes managed by the Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings, a group allegedly involved in exploiting and abusing the children in their care.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain revealed that the operation followed serious allegations of child abandonment, deviant teachings, and sexual assault. The raids, which took place across 18 homes in Selangor state and two in Negeri Sembilan state, uncovered disturbing conditions. The rescued children, comprising 201 boys and 201 girls aged between 1 and 17 years, were reportedly subjected to severe mistreatment.

The suspects arrested include 66 men and 105 women, among them religious teachers and caretakers. The investigation revealed that children were not only abused by caretakers but were also coerced into abusing each other. Additionally, sick children were reportedly denied medical care until their conditions worsened, and some were subjected to physical punishment such as being burned with hot spoons.

Global Ikhwan, an organization previously led by the controversial Ashaari Mohamad, has faced scrutiny for its alleged ties to the banned Islamic sect Al Arqam. Despite the severity of the accusations, the group denied exploiting children and committed to cooperating with authorities. However, they did not address the specific allegations of sexual abuse.

The group, which operates in various sectors including food and beverage, media, medical, travel, and property, has branches in 20 countries and employs over 5,000 people. The investigation continues as authorities assess the full extent of the alleged abuses.

The high commission stated that local authorities are systematically exploring new potential routes and areas to locate the missing Indian national, Vijaya Lakshmi Gali, who fell into a sinkhole in the Malaysian capital on August 23.

According to Malay Mail, the operation remains concentrated at the main site of the incident on Jalan Masjid India. Police have cordoned off the area with yellow tape, resulting in the closure of nearby businesses to ensure public safety. Various techniques, including tracker dogs and the ‘jetting’ method, have been employed in the search for Vijaya Lakshmi.

The Indian High Commission reported that local authorities, along with the police, fire and rescue department, Indah Water Consortium, KL Federal Territories agencies, and Civil Defence Forces, supported by specialized scientific teams equipped with advanced technology, are now involved in the search.

“After flushing through portions of drain system, search is being augmented with specialised techniques including high-pressure water jets to remove obstacles, remote cameras and ground penetrating radars to map inaccessible areas,” it wrote. The Indian mission stated that it remains in close communication with the agencies involved in the search efforts, which have now entered their fifth day. The mission also mentioned that its officers are in contact with the family members to provide ongoing support.

The sinkhole, located in the Dang Wangi area, is approximately 8 meters (26 feet) deep.

Collapse Leads to Sinkhole

The pavement suddenly gave way under the woman, causing her to fall into the sinkhole. Witnesses reported the sudden collapse, and emergency services were quick to respond. Rescuers established a perimeter around the area and deployed an excavator to remove debris, but they have yet to locate the missing woman.

Search Complicated by Underground Water Flow

Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohamad Isa noted that the search is complicated by strong underground water currents, which may have carried the woman away. He emphasized that any actions taken must be carefully planned to avoid disrupting public infrastructure, which could lead to flooding in the area.

Previous Soil Slip at Site

Rusdi mentioned that a soil slip had occurred at the same location last year, but it had been repaired. Businesses in the vicinity have been advised to close temporarily as a precaution.

Victim’s Background

The woman had been on vacation in Malaysia with her husband and friends for the past two months. They were scheduled to return home on Saturday. The circumstances of the incident are still under investigation, and authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the pavement collapse.

This incident highlights the dangers associated with infrastructure failures and the challenges faced by rescue operations in such scenarios.

</excerpt>

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the Quad’s approach to the Indo-Pacific focuses on avoiding actions that could be seen as provocative. He emphasised that maintaining centrality is crucial for ensuring peace in the region.

“Our position of centrality, is to avoid any action or decision or policy or move that could be construed to be unnecessarily provocative. That position to me is paramount, is pertinent in ensuring a peaceful region, particularly in the Asia Pacific, both in the Indian Ocean or the Chinese South China Sea. And I think that position should be respected. As far as we are concerned bilaterally, we should engage,” he said.

Talking about a possibility of the Yuan superseding the Dollar in the future, Ibrahim said, “The dollar is still an important for exchange, but why should we be obsessed or dependent on that? We are working on a viable alternative that will be more just. I told the Prime Minister [Modi] during the bilateral session, that last year, growth in investments was impressive, inflation was down low 2%, unemployment 3%, and still major attack on the Ringgit. Nothing to do with economic fundamentals, just what FED in Washington DC decide. So there’s nothing much we can do except to use other avenues where we can help resolve and ease the impact. That is why we still are dependent in some areas, the transactions in dollars. But we use our own local currency denominations to ensure that at least we have certain percentage into our deals. That could probably reduce the negative impact. Because finally, in managing the economy, we talk about fundamentals. The fundamentals are well guarded. And there are tough measures,” he said.

Ibrahim mentioned that despite implementing all good governance measures, they were still subject to the decisions of the Federal Reserve.

“Subsidiary rationalisation, ensuring quality education public health, basic infrastructure, good governance, combating against excesses and corruption, everything is being done. But, still we are finally subjected to the decision and the Fed. This, of course, is not a fair international financial architecture. The over-dependence on a system that do not cater for the interests of the majority or the principle of just order, be it in the trade or in financial architecture, cannot be accepted any longer. Since we do not have the capacity to change now, we do it in our own way at least reduce impact. And I think if we can use, for example, a fraction, 20% or 30% in our local currency, it will ease the negative impact,” he said.

Ibrahim stated that politics and governance should focus on the welfare of the people, rather than the egos of one or two individuals.

“Multilaterally we should engage. So any move, may not be intentionally construed as provocative, but if it’s seen but the other side provocative, you need to engage and avoid because there’s too much at stake. And to me, politics and governance is about welfare of the people, not ego of one or two personalities. Our people have suffered immensely and it is our commitment, having leading governments and leaders to ensure that we have policies that remain sane to focus on the welfare of people. And this is to me an excellent time post Covid. After such hardship, it is time that we refocus.”

Ibrahim said that India has produced many great sages and leaders, and is regarded by many as a beacon of hope and democracy in the region.

“India is to me remains an enigma. I’ve been here umpteen times as a student leader and I told Suman Bhakti that I had the occasion even as a young student leader to have a session with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, nine youth leaders from Asia confronting her a number of issues and observe her candour and motherly attitude to deal with some very pernicious questions raised by young leaders on the issue of corruption or issue of racism, issue of religious bigotry. This is the country that produces Sri Aurobindo, an outstanding intellect, and leaders like Gandhi ji, which is of course unique in his battle for freedom, justice, for humanity. You have intellectual giants who became leaders in their own countries, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mohammed Ali Jinnah. India has produced great sages and leaders and is considered by many of us a beacon of hope and democracy in the region. I will not deny the fact that you also have to grapple with some serious issues affecting minorities or religious sentiments,” he said.

Ibrahim expressed his hope that India will continue to uphold its traditional role of valuing freedom.

“Our hope is that India continues to play its role, rightful role because I mentioned to Prime Minister Modi, that these were the years when Nehru and Zhou Enlai and Sukarno and Nyerere were there standing up for the global south against colonialism and imperialism and to struggle to ensure that we recognise what humanity is about, what freedom is all about, and what dignity of men and women,” he said.

However, the fire service reported that no passengers were impacted and that there were no flight interruptions.

The engineering building is distinct from the passenger terminal, and people impacted by the gas worked for three different organizations operating there, according to a fire department statement.

Thirty-nine persons reported dizziness and nausea, with 14 being transported to the air disaster unit for treatment and one being hospitalized, according to the department.

The Selangor state fire department said it got an emergency report about a chemical leak at the Southern Support Zone Sepang Aircraft Engineering complex at 11.23 a.m. (0323 GMT) and dispatched personnel and a hazardous materials team.

The chemical was ultimately identified as methyl mercaptan, which was added to liquefied petroleum gas as an odorant and originated from an underused tank at the plant, according to the agency.

According to the report, the leak was being repaired, and the tank will be removed and disposed away.

</excerpt>

An eviction operation in Malaysia’s Sabah earlier this month has rendered hundreds of stateless Bajau Laut homeless. Sabah’s Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment, Christina Liew, dismissed allegations by human rights groups that the operation violated international human rights laws. She went on to claim that some residents destroyed their homes for social media attention. Authorities have justified the evictions by citing border security, illegal fishing, and unauthorized construction within the Tun Sakaran Marine Park.

More about Bajau Laut community

The Bajau Laut, a semi-nomadic group within the Sama-Bajau people, traditionally lived across the central and eastern Malay and Sulu Archipelagos. At present, some have claimed citizenship of Malaysia and other neighbouring countries, many are stateless, residing in stilted houses and houseboats along the shores of Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Indonesia.

Malaysia’s race laws complicate statelessness. The concept of Ketuanan Melayu (Malay Supremacy) and various interpretations of Bumiputra (indigenous peoples) create systemic discrimination against non-Bumiputra Malaysians, including the Bajau Laut. Consequently, many Bajau Laut lack access to essential services like healthcare and education.

Organizations like Iskul Sama diLaut Omadal and Borneo Komrad’s Sekolah Alternatif provide someof the only social services to the Bajau Laut. Historical territorial disputes between the Philippines and Malaysia, exacerbated by the dissolution of regional sultanates and colonial rule, have displaced the Bajau Laut, particularly due to ongoing conflicts and insurgencies in the southern Philippines.

</excerpt>

On Monday, diesel prices in Malaysia increased by more than 50 per cent as the government revamped decades-old fuel subsidies to reduce spending and save billions of ringgits (Malaysian currency) annually. This restructuring eliminates blanket energy subsidies and redirects them to those in need.

The reforms, part of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s economic strategy, are designed to create a more sustainable economy and curb the smuggling of cheap oil to neighboring countries. While higher fuel prices are necessary, Anwar has been cautious, mindful that working-class voters are already struggling with rising living costs.

The decision to cut fuel subsidies was announced last month, providing lower-income groups time to prepare for the transition. The government also plans to eventually address petrol subsidies.

Fuel price hike explained

Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan announced on Sunday that diesel prices would rise to 3.35 ringgit (USD 0.71) per litre on Monday, a 56 per cent increase from the previous subsidized price of 2.15 ringgit (USD 0.46). He stated that prices will be reviewed weekly to align with market rates.

However, the price increase will not apply to Malaysian states on Borneo island and eligible logistic vehicles. Additionally, lower prices for fishermen and various land public transport vehicles, such as school buses, taxis, and ambulances, will remain unchanged.

The Royal Malaysian Navy and the High Commission of India in Malaysia warmly greeted the Indian naval ships.

In a statement, the Indian Navy stated, “Two Indian Naval ships Delhi and Shakti under the command of R Adm Rajesh Dhankhar, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet arrived at Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia as part of the Indian Navy’s Operational Deployment. The ships were accorded a warm welcome by the Royal Malaysian Navy and the High Commission of India in Malaysia.”

While at port, members of the Indian and Malaysian Navies will participate in various professional engagements, including Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) sessions, yoga, sports events, and cross-deck visits. These activities are intended to enhance the existing mutual cooperation and understanding between the two nations’ Navies, as stated by the Indian Navy.

Upon concluding the port visit, the Indian Navy vessels will engage in a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX)/PASSEX at sea alongside ships from the Royal Malaysian Navy. The exercise aims to boost interoperability between the two Navies, a commitment reaffirmed during the MILAN 2024 and Ex Samudra Lakshmana 2024 exercises.

In a statement, the Indian Navy stated, “This visit will further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two maritime neighbours through a series of engagements and activities. The deployment of the Indian Naval ships to this crucial region also highlights the Indian Navy’s steadfast commitment to the ‘Act East’ and SAGAR policies of the Government of India.”

As per the statement, INS Delhi is the inaugural indigenously designed and constructed Project-15 class guided missile destroyer, while INS Shakti serves as a Fleet Support Ship. Both vessels are integral components of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet.

Recently, Indian Naval Ships Delhi, Shakti, and Kiltan wrapped up a four-day visit to Singapore from May 6 to 9. The visit focused on bilateral engagements, exploring areas of mutual interest and cooperation, and reaffirming the dedication to bolster maritime security and stability in the region.

“This visit is part of the Operational Deployment of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet to the South China Sea,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. Rear Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, along with the Commanding Officers of the ships, engaged in discussions with the Fleet Commander of the Republic of Singapore Navy at the Singapore Naval Headquarters.

“The visit provided an opportunity for discussions on enhancing naval cooperation and interoperability between navies of both India and Singapore. A deck reception was hosted onboard INS Shakti, wherein personnel from both navies and the Indian diaspora in Singapore, and also local diplomatic community, had the opportunity to interact, furthering the bonds of friendship and mutual respect,” Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

The Ministry of Defence also mentioned that local children were invited to tour the Indian ships as part of the Indian Navy’s dedication to maritime education and outreach.

“The children were given guided tours of the ships, where they learned about naval operations, India’s rich maritime history and heritage and also the importance of maritime security. These interactions aim to inspire the younger generation and promote a greater understanding of maritime affairs. Personnel from both the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy also undertook cross-ship visits and Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE), in addition to other professional interactions,” it said.

</excerpt>

The controversy surrounding HD Deve Gowda’s grandson Prajwal Revanna and a sex tape took a fresh turn when Prajwal’s ex-driver, Karthik, released a video statement. Previously, the JD(S) accused Karthik of leaking the videos to the Congress, but Karthik clarified that he only provided the footage and images to BJP leader Devaraje Gowda. Amid speculation of Karthik’s whereabouts, former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy stated that Karthik was in Malaysia and questioned who arranged his trip there.

“The driver’s video statement was released…where is he, Karthik? From where it was done (video statement) and released? Why was the video hurriedly made and given to news channels? Who gave it? He is in Malaysia,” Kumaraswamy said.

Latest Updates on Prajwal Revanna Sex Tape Controversy

HD Revanna, Prajwal’s father and also implicated in a sex scandal, filed for pre-arrest bail on Thursday following a notice from the SIT.

A lookout circular has been issued for the arrest of Prajwal, who has requested additional time to appear before the SIT citing his current location abroad. “A lookout notice has been issued soon after it was learnt that Prajwal Revanna has gone abroad. We have informed all the ports and airports about the lookout notice,” Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed the Prajwal issue in Karnataka, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi aided Prajwal’s departure from the country.

On Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs clarified that Prajwal did not request any political clearance before traveling to Germany. Additionally, holders of diplomatic passports do not need a visa to travel to Germany.

Siddaramaiah wrote to PM Modi requesting the cancellation of Prajwal’s diplomatic passport. However, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that passport cancellation can only be carried out based on court directives.

Reports indicate that Prajwal Revanna is expected to return to India on May 15.

HD Kumaraswamy claimed that the ‘DK’ brothers (DK Shivakumar and DK Suresh) may have dispatched Prajwal’s former driver to Malaysia.

DK Shivakumar refuted the allegation, asserting that he has no motive or necessity to engage in such actions. “I will fight on the street, but not by sending someone somewhere. I need not do such things, he (Kumaraswamy) may be in need to do such things,” Shivakumar said.

BJP’s Devaraje Gowda, to whom Prajwal’s former driver allegedly provided the pen drives containing the videos, stated that the driver had been seen associating with the Congress candidate from Hassan and deemed the situation as a conspiracy.

</excerpt>

At the age of 65, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar is poised to ascend the throne in Malaysia, accompanied by an estimated wealth of $5.7 billion and a vast empire that extends beyond national borders. Sultan Ibrahim’s extensive portfolio encompasses diverse ventures, spanning real estate, mining, telecommunications, and palm oil. The lavish Istana Bukit Serene, his official residence, stands as a testament to his family’s affluence, housing a collection of over 300 luxury cars, including one reputedly gifted by Adolf Hitler, and a fleet of private jets, including a distinctive gold-and-blue Boeing 737. Additionally, his family commands a private army. While Bloomberg estimates the family fortune at $5.7 billion, the true magnitude of Sultan Ibrahim’s wealth is believed to surpass this figure.

The Sultan holds a 24% stake in U Mobile, a significant Malaysian cell service provider, with additional investments in private and public companies amounting to $588 million. Moreover, he possesses $4 billion worth of land in Singapore, including Tyersall Park, an expansive area adjacent to the Botanic Gardens.

Sultan Ibrahim’s investment portfolio stands at $1.1 billion, facilitated by substantial cash flow from share and real estate transactions. As he prepares to officially assume the throne, his role, though primarily ceremonial, assumes importance in Malaysia’s evolving political landscape. Diverging from his predecessors, Sultan Ibrahim is characterized by a distinctive blend of flamboyance and outspokenness. His close associations with Singapore’s leadership and business ties with prominent Chinese developers position him to exert considerable influence on both domestic and foreign policy.

Beyond his wealth, Sultan Ibrahim’s impact extends to the economic landscape of Malaysia. Serving as a gatekeeper for business opportunities, particularly for the Malay community, he has played a crucial role in major projects through joint ventures with Chinese tycoons. His business interests and alliances with Chinese investors, coupled with a special relationship with Singapore’s leaders, establish him as a key player in the regional economic arena.
