</excerpt>

In a horrific accident in the early hours of Sunday, eight individuals comprising three women and a one-and-a-half-year-old boy died when their textile mill in Maharashtra’s Solapur district caught fire. The accident took place at Central Textile Mills on Akkalkot Road within the MIDC industrial estate about 400 km from Mumbai.

Suspected Short Circuit Triggers Deadly Blaze

The fire is said to have started at about 3:45 am, likely caused by a short circuit. The fire engulfed the factory compound quite fast, giving the occupants little time to get out.

Among the victims were the owner of the factory, Haji Usman Hasanbhai Mansuri, and three members of his family, one being his young grandson. Four other fatalities, said to be factory workers, also lost their lives in the accident. Officials confirmed that three women were among the dead.

Firefighters Take Hours to Control Blaze

The fire was massive, and it took Fire Brigade personnel almost five to six hours to get the fire in control. “Because of the intensity of the fire, our staff had to work day and night for hours. Operations to douse the fire are still going on at the site,” a local official explained.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been officially confirmed. However, officials suspect that a short circuit may have triggered the devastating blaze. Investigations are currently underway. Authorities are expected to release more details after completing a thorough inspection of the site.

Authorities Vow to Assist the Affected Families

This tragic accident has left shock waves in the Solapur industrial belt. The local authorities have offered condolences to the bereaved families and promised them every possible help. Safety measures at the industrial units in the region are bound to be questioned once again after this accident.

Further developments are awaited as the emergency operation and the investigation go on.

</excerpt>

Maharashtra’s public health department is set to launch a large-scale health screening initiative aimed at identifying and treating various health conditions in children across the state. This initiative, part of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), will screen more than 1.66 crore children between the ages of 0 and 18. The project is expected to bring about early detection of diseases, ensure timely treatment, and improve the overall health of the state’s younger population. This ambitious drive will be rolled out statewide at the state, district, and taluka levels for broad-based coverage.

Launch and Inauguration

The health screening campaign is set to be officially inaugurated on March 1. The event will take place at Indira Gandhi Model School in Aundh, Pune, and will be attended by several prominent officials. Among the key figures who will participate in the launch are Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, and Public Health Minister, Prakash Abitkar. The inauguration will be accompanied by a gathering of elected representatives, including members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), Zilla Parishad (ZP) members, and other local officials, ensuring the active participation of the community at every level.

The Key Objective of the Drive

The primary goal of the screening initiative is to facilitate early detection and prompt medical intervention for a wide range of health issues that affect children. By reaching out to over 1.66 crore children, the public health department aims to identify both common and complex health conditions, such as anaemia, vision disorders, developmental delays, and even life-threatening diseases like cancer and heart issues. Early intervention can significantly improve outcomes for children, especially in cases of conditions that require long-term management or surgical intervention.

Dr. Kailas Baviskar, the deputy director of health services, emphasized that the drive would cover children from diverse backgrounds, including those attending government and government-aided schools, as well as those enrolled in Anganwadis (rural child-care centers). Over 14 lakh students from 6,000 schools and 20 lakh children from 30,000 Anganwadis will benefit from the health screenings. The drive is a collaborative effort between the public health department, the education department, the integrated child development department, and the tribal development and urban development departments.

Collaboration and Support

The health screening campaign has garnered support from various departments and government officials. Dr. Nipun Vinayak, the health secretary, along with Amgothu Shri Ranga Nayak, the health commissioner, will also be present at the inauguration. Their presence will signify the importance of a collective effort to ensure the campaign’s success. District-level officials, including the district collector and divisional commissioner, will oversee the implementation of the drive at the local level.

The campaign is designed to go beyond just a one-time screening process. Children who are found to have health issues will be provided with free medical treatment at government hospitals or hospitals affiliated with the RBSK and the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY). This initiative is aimed at ensuring that even children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds receive the necessary medical attention without any financial burden.

Screening Process and Examination Details

The health screening will include a comprehensive “head to toe” examination to evaluate various aspects of the children’s health. This includes the measurement of height and weight, with a body mass index (BMI) assessment for children above six years of age. The medical professionals will also conduct a systemic clinical examination to monitor vital signs such as temperature, pulse rate, and other key indicators that could point to underlying health conditions.

One of the key areas of focus in this drive is the screening for congenital disabilities. The campaign aims to detect birth defects at an early stage, allowing for early intervention and treatment. This will help in addressing a variety of birth-related conditions, potentially preventing long-term health complications.

Further screenings will focus on common health issues like anaemia, vision disorders, and dental problems. Other conditions such as goitre, tuberculosis, leprosy, asthma, epilepsy, heart diseases, and cancer will also be screened. The identification of these diseases at an early stage is crucial, as it can dramatically increase the chances of effective treatment and recovery.

Special Focus Areas: Autism and Mental Health

In addition to physical health conditions, the screening will also include a special focus on mental health and developmental issues. Children suspected to have autism or other developmental delays will be referred to District Early Intervention Centres (DEICs) for further evaluation and therapy. The importance of early diagnosis and intervention in cases of autism cannot be overstated, as timely support can help children develop vital skills and lead a more independent life.

The initiative will also address learning disabilities and mental health concerns in children. Identifying children who may be struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, or learning disabilities is critical to ensuring that they receive the appropriate counseling and medical support. This aspect of the campaign highlights the growing awareness of the importance of mental health in child development and the need for a more holistic approach to healthcare.

Adolescent Health Screening

Another important aspect of this statewide health initiative is the screening of adolescents. Adolescence is a critical stage in a child’s development, and it is essential to monitor both physical and mental health during this time. The screening will assess various aspects of adolescent health, including the physical changes associated with puberty, as well as mental health challenges like stress, anxiety, and depression. Adolescents identified with physical or mental health issues will be referred for the necessary counseling and treatment, ensuring their well-being as they transition into adulthood.

Collaboration with Various Stakeholders

This health drive is a collaborative effort between various stakeholders. The public health department has worked closely with the integrated child development department, the education department, and the tribal development and urban development departments to ensure that all children, including those in rural areas, have access to this crucial healthcare service. By involving local officials and community representatives, the initiative ensures a participatory approach, making it easier to reach children from diverse communities.

Furthermore, the campaign will be supported by a network of health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and health workers, who will conduct the screenings at schools, Anganwadis, and other community centers. Their expertise will be crucial in ensuring that children receive accurate diagnoses and appropriate referrals.

Impact on Maharashtra’s Health System

The launch of this extensive health screening drive marks a significant step towards strengthening Maharashtra’s healthcare system. By focusing on early detection and treatment, the state is investing in the long-term health of its younger population. The initiative also reflects a shift in the approach to healthcare in India, where preventative measures and early intervention are becoming increasingly important in the fight against various diseases.

The campaign is expected to create a positive impact on the overall health of children in Maharashtra. With better access to healthcare services, more children will receive timely treatment, which will improve their quality of life and reduce the burden of preventable diseases. It is also expected to contribute to a healthier future generation, with children growing up healthier and more resilient to the diseases that have previously hindered their development.

Maharashtra’s health screening drive under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram is a comprehensive and ambitious initiative that will significantly improve the health of over 1.66 crore children across the state. By focusing on early identification and treatment, the campaign will ensure that children with various health conditions receive the necessary care and support. With the involvement of various government departments and local officials, the drive is poised to be a success, making a lasting impact on the health and well-being of Maharashtra’s younger population.

Fadnavis dismisses internal discord, emphasizing unwavering, collective unity
</excerpt>

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lashed out at the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Sunday, criticizing their approach ahead of the upcoming assembly Budget session. At a joint press conference with his deputies, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Fadnavis highlighted the opposition’s failure to participate in a customary pre-session snack meeting, a gesture he claimed would have allowed for a “fluent conversation.”

Opposition’s Missed Opportunity

Fadnavis pointed out that the MVA had submitted a nine-page letter to the government, but skipped the pre-session “Chahapan” snack meeting that typically facilitates informal dialogue before formal proceedings. “The opposition has handed us a letter based solely on newspaper reports, missing out on the opportunity for meaningful discussion,” he stated. Fadnavis added, “The situation in the Opposition is ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun?’ not ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain?’ We will ensure they get a lengthy opportunity to speak in the House during the session.”

Budget Session Details

With the Budget session scheduled to begin on Monday and state Finance Minister Ajit Pawar set to present the Budget on March 10, the government is keen on moving forward. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar assured that despite the absence of the opposition at the pre-session meeting, the House would function smoothly. “We will definitely try to run this session smoothly,” Pawar said, emphasizing that procedural arrangements are in place.

Denying Internal Discord

In a display of unity, Fadnavis dismissed speculations of a rift between him and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. He mockingly compared Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut’s behavior to that of the legendary screenwriting duo Salim-Javed, adding, “There is no war. Those who know both of us will remember what we do when we are together.” Shinde further lightened the mood by noting, “Everything is thanda thanda, cool cool,” while Pawar humorously retorted, “What can I do if you couldn’t keep your chair,” prompting laughter among the trio.

A United Front Amid Political Rivalry

Fadnavis stressed that the ruling coalition—comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP—is working in unison to steer the state forward, dismissing rumors about stalled projects as mere speculation. “We are all working together. The talks about halted projects are completely false rumours,” he asserted, reinforcing the government’s commitment to progress.

As the Budget session draws near, the opposition’s decision to bypass the informal pre-session meeting has come under intense scrutiny. Fadnavis’s remarks underscore his determination to give the opposition ample opportunity to express their views in the House, while simultaneously defending the government’s track record and unity.

With the Budget session set to commence on Monday, the political spotlight remains firmly on the opposition’s handling of pre-session protocols and the government’s assurances of a smooth legislative process. As both sides prepare for a contentious debate, Fadnavis’s robust critique and the lighthearted exchanges among the ruling coalition highlight the vibrant, if at times contentious, nature of Maharashtra politics.

</excerpt>

A village in Maharashtra’s Nashik district has renamed itself as ‘Hero Chi Wadi’ to pay tribute to the late Bollywood icon Irrfan Khan. The village in Igatpuri was previously known as ‘Patryacha Wada’. The name change was made in celebration of Irrfan Khan.

Irrfan shared a long-standing bond with the community, owning a farmhouse near ‘Trilangwadi Fort’ for almost 14-15 years. His actions are printed in villagers’ hearts as he provided them with an ambulance, books, computers, and basic facilities.

Tribute to Irrfan Khan

Villagers respected the Khan’s humility and altruism. Khan’s contribution was not only to give them material support but also to treat them with love and respect. Khan was kind to the locals; he chatted with them, provided them with food, and played songs for the children.

A viral post by “The Culture Gully” channel on Instagram shared Khan’s contributions and his humanitarian side. This kindheartedness deeply resonated with the people, prompting the community to name the township after him- ‘Hero Chi Wadi. ‘

A talented actor who is known for powerful performances in Paan Singh Tomar, The Lunchbox, and Angrezi Medium, died after a prolonged illness of a neuroendocrine tumor in April 2020.

His death left behind his wife, Sutapa, and sons, Babil and Ayan. He shall be remembered not only through his films but also for his special place in the hearts of the villagers who got the privilege to meet him.

</excerpt>

The Maharashtra government has established a seven-member committee to examine legal avenues for a potential law addressing forced religious conversions and ‘love jihad.’ Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the seriousness of such incidents and the need for action.

Speaking on the issue, CM Fadnavis stated, “The Supreme Court has also shown the reality of love jihad in its decision and endorsed it. And even in a state like Maharashtra, we are constantly seeing that such cases are increasing. First of all, we all should understand that it is not wrong for a person of one religion to marry a person of another religion. But marrying someone by lying and showing false identity is wrong. These incidents that are happening are very serious, action must be taken on this.”

The committee, led by the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), includes senior officials from key departments such as women and child welfare, minority affairs, law and judiciary, social justice, special assistance, and home affairs. It has been tasked with studying similar laws in other states and recommending legal measures to address complaints regarding forced conversions and ‘love jihad.’

The decision has been welcomed by several BJP leaders, including Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, who remarked, “There should be a law against love jihad. The conversion of women is not right. Two youngsters (of different religions) coming together is normal but girls shouldn’t be forcefully converted.”

Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha also commended Fadnavis for setting up the panel, asserting that ‘love jihad’ cases have been increasing in the state, particularly in Mumbai. He stated, “Love jihad cases have increased across the country. In Mumbai, Maharashtra, there have been many cases. When someone tries to put an end to love jihad, as I put forward this issue in the Vidhan Sabha, people like Samajwadi MLA Rais Shaikh oppose this. He filed a court case against me. Does he want to encourage love jihad?”

He further added, “There are numerous other cases that have gone unreported as well; I don’t even want to get into that list. I want to thank Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for forming this committee. Stringent action will be taken in this regard.”

However, the move has drawn criticism from Congress leader Husain Dalwai, who opposed the formation of the committee, arguing that forced conversion is not possible under India’s constitutional framework. He stated, “How can someone be converted forcefully? Our Constitution allows us to follow any religion or not follow any religion at all. They (Maharashtra government) don’t have the right to decide who marries who.”

The Mahayuti-NDA government in Maharashtra recently set up this panel to assess the legal and technical aspects of drafting legislation on ‘love jihad,’ with the state’s DGP heading the initiative.

His incredible journey, captured in a viral video, has sparked online buzz and highlighted the region’s traffic woes.
</excerpt>

A student from Pasarani village of Satara, Maharashtra, in Wai taluka, cut a striking figure when he took an unusual route to reach his college just in time for his exam. With traffic on the Wai-Panchgani road, he took to paragliding to save himself. A viral social media video captures him soaring through the skies with his backpack, making a spectacular entrance within the exam venue.

Full Story of the Student

The student, Samarth Mahangade of Satara district, apparently put himself in a difficult situation on examination day. He had to remember about his previous test while having other engagements in Panchgani. With hardly 15-20 minutes and traffic already building in Pasarani Ghat, getting to his college within that time frame was declared impossible.

</excerpt>

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare but severe neurological disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness, numbness, and, in severe cases, paralysis. The recent surge in cases in Maharashtra, particularly in Pune and surrounding areas, has raised alarm among health officials and the general public alike. As of February 12, 2025, Mumbai reported its first death due to GBS, with a total of eight fatalities in the state. This is a significant development in the ongoing health crisis, as health departments scramble to investigate the root causes and prevent further spread of this rare disease.

Understanding Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nerves. It typically follows a viral or bacterial infection, with the most common triggers being infections like the flu, Zika virus, or even some respiratory or gastrointestinal infections. The syndrome manifests in muscle weakness that can progress to paralysis, often beginning with the legs and spreading upwards. In the most severe cases, GBS can affect the respiratory muscles, requiring mechanical ventilation.

The exact cause of Guillain-Barré Syndrome is still not fully understood, but it is believed that the body’s immune system overreacts to an infection and begins attacking nerve tissue. This damage to the nerves leads to the hallmark symptoms of GBS: weakness, tingling sensations, and, in extreme cases, complete paralysis.

Recent Outbreak in Maharashtra

As of mid-February 2025, Maharashtra has been battling an alarming rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome cases. The health department confirmed 172 cases of GBS, with a total of eight deaths reported so far. These cases have primarily been concentrated in the Pune region, including Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad, and rural areas. The severity of the outbreak has raised concerns about the quality of local water supplies, which could be contributing to the spread of the disease.

Reports indicate that the majority of the GBS cases are associated with contaminated water sources in the affected areas. Following a series of water quality tests, the Pune Municipal Corporation took swift action by sealing 30 private water supply plants in various districts, including Nanded, Dhayari, and the outer areas of Sinhgad village. These plants were found to be violating health safety standards, with several lacking the necessary operating licenses and others found to have high levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, a dangerous pathogen that can lead to gastrointestinal infections and potentially trigger conditions like GBS.

Water Contamination and Its Connection to GBS

The link between contaminated water and Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a growing concern. E. coli bacteria, when ingested, can cause severe gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhea, which can be followed by neurological complications. While the exact mechanism of how E. coli or other contaminants trigger GBS is still under investigation, it is known that certain bacterial infections can lead to an overreaction of the immune system, which may inadvertently damage the nerves.

In Pune, where the majority of GBS cases have been reported, water contamination has been identified as a key factor. Health authorities are working to prevent further outbreaks by strengthening regulations on water quality, ensuring that water treatment plants use disinfectants like chlorine to kill harmful pathogens, and preventing the operation of unlicensed water suppliers.

Clinical Management of Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Guillain-Barré Syndrome requires prompt medical attention, especially when symptoms progress rapidly. Treatment typically involves supportive care, including mechanical ventilation for those whose breathing muscles are affected, and immunotherapy such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or plasmapheresis to reduce the immune system’s attack on the nervous system. In many cases, patients recover with proper treatment, though the process can be slow, with some individuals experiencing lasting effects for months or even years.

In Maharashtra, the health department has taken significant steps to manage the growing number of GBS cases. A total of 104 patients have been discharged, and 50 are currently in intensive care units (ICU). Of these, 20 remain on ventilators, indicating the severity of the disease’s impact in certain cases. Doctors are focusing on providing intensive care to those in critical condition while working to identify the underlying causes of the outbreak to prevent further cases.

The Role of Public Health Authorities

The outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Maharashtra has underscored the importance of proactive public health measures. The Union Health Minister, JP Nadda, held a crucial meeting with state health and medical officials to review the steps being taken to combat the disease and control its spread. While the immediate focus is on treating affected individuals and providing support to local healthcare systems, long-term strategies include monitoring water quality, ensuring better surveillance of waterborne diseases, and increasing public awareness of the symptoms and risks associated with GBS.

Public health authorities have also focused on improving the quality of healthcare in rural and underserved areas, where access to medical facilities and expert care may be limited. This includes providing better diagnostic tools, increasing the availability of vaccines, and ensuring that health centers are equipped to handle neurological conditions like GBS.

The Importance of Awareness and Prevention

As GBS is a rare condition, many people may not be familiar with its symptoms or the potential risks associated with it. Public awareness campaigns are essential to help individuals recognize the early signs of the disease and seek medical help promptly. Early intervention can significantly improve outcomes, as Guillain-Barré Syndrome can be treated more effectively in its initial stages.

Preventive measures also play a key role in curbing the spread of GBS. This includes improving sanitation and water treatment practices, particularly in areas where outbreaks have been reported. The recent actions taken by the Pune Municipal Corporation to seal non-compliant water plants are an example of how local authorities are working to prevent further contamination and protect public health.

The situation in Maharashtra remains fluid, with health officials continuing to monitor the outbreak and take necessary actions to control its spread. While the number of GBS cases continues to rise, so too does the collective response from both local and national authorities. The outbreak has highlighted the need for comprehensive public health strategies to address waterborne diseases, improve healthcare infrastructure, and ensure that all patients, regardless of location or economic status, have access to quality care.

In the coming months, health experts will continue to investigate the link between contaminated water and Guillain-Barré Syndrome while working to improve the treatment and management of affected patients. Public health officials are also calling for greater collaboration between state and national agencies to ensure that outbreaks like this are dealt with swiftly and effectively.

Ultimately, the success of these efforts will depend on the combined action of healthcare professionals, government authorities, and the public to prevent the further spread of this rare but serious neurological disorder. By learning from this outbreak, authorities hope to improve the response to future health crises and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.

In conclusion, while the Guillain-Barré Syndrome outbreak in Maharashtra is a concerning development, the swift response from health authorities, the actions taken to address water contamination, and the efforts to raise awareness about the disease offer hope for controlling and ultimately overcoming the crisis. As more data is gathered and more research is conducted, it is hoped that the link between GBS and contaminated water will become clearer, allowing for more effective prevention and treatment strategies in the future.

</excerpt>

In an extremely rare medical case, doctors in Maharashtra’s Buldhana detected a fetus growing inside the stomach of an unborn baby. This condition, known as foetus-in-fetu, is an exceptionally rare congenital anomaly, with only around 200 documented cases worldwide and just 15-20 reported in India.

The case came to light when a 32-year-old pregnant woman underwent a routine sonography at a government hospital. Doctors were stunned to find an undeveloped fetus inside the abdomen of the unborn child, a condition that had gone undetected in earlier scans due to its extreme rarity.

Medical Experts Confirm the Condition

Gynaecologists and medical experts carefully re-examined the images to confirm the anomaly. “At first, I was surprised by the discovery. After thorough analysis and consultations with other doctors, we confirmed that it was indeed a case of foetus-in-fetu,” said one of the specialists involved in the diagnosis.

Doctors believe this condition arises due to an abnormal development of identical twins, where one fetus becomes trapped within the other during early gestation. Since the parasitic twin cannot survive independently, it remains inside the host fetus, often undetected until late in pregnancy or after birth.

What Lies Ahead for the Mother and Baby

Despite this rare complication, medical experts have assured that the mother is likely to have a normal delivery. However, the newborn may require immediate medical attention after birth to address the condition.

While the exact cause remains unclear, cases like these provide valuable insights into fetal development and medical anomalies. Doctors are closely monitoring the case, and further medical intervention will be decided based on the baby’s condition post-delivery.

</excerpt>

Maharashtra recently reported its initial death linked to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) following the passing of a Chartered Accountant from Pune due to the uncommon condition. The individual, a resident of Pune’s DSK Vishwa area, initially suffered from diarrhoea and traveled to his hometown in Solapur. After feeling weak, he was admitted to a private hospital in Solapur, where he was diagnosed with GBS. Although his condition improved at first, he subsequently faced breathing difficulties and died, as stated by his family.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare immune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its nerves, resulting in abrupt numbness and muscle weakness. Initial symptoms can include diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, and nausea. In some instances, GBS manifests 1-3 weeks after an individual contracts an illness, such as dengue, chikungunya, or bacterial infections.

Pune is presently experiencing a surge in GBS cases, with 73 confirmed incidents, including 14 patients requiring ventilators. On Saturday, nine new suspected cases were reported. The Pune Municipal Corporation has enhanced its efforts to address the outbreak and has released public advisories urging residents to consume boiled water and avoid stale or open food. Authorities have also recommended seeking immediate medical help if sudden muscle weakness is experienced.

The state health department, in collaboration with the Union health ministry, has escalated its preventive measures. A central health team has been sent to Pune’s Sinhgad area, identified as the outbreak’s focal point. Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar highlighted that GBS has now been incorporated into the state’s health insurance scheme, Mahatma Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana, ensuring complimentary treatment. The financial coverage limit for private hospitals under this program has been raised to ₹1. 6 lakh, effectively doubling the previous cap.

Hospitals have been mandated not to levy unnecessary fees on patients, with strict penalties promised for those who violate this directive. Abitkar reassured the community that GBS is a treatable condition and encouraged the public not to be alarmed. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that GBS patients will receive free treatment at the Pune civic body’s Kamala Nehru Hospital.

</excerpt>

A tragic incident in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district claimed at least 12 lives and left nearly seven others injured after passengers jumped off the Pushpak Express, only to be hit by the Karnataka Express on a parallel track. The accident occurred on Wednesday when passengers, alarmed by rumors of a fire aboard the Pushpak Express, tried to escape the train. The Pushpak Express, traveling from Lucknow to Mumbai, was nearing Jalgaon when fears of a fire spread, leading passengers to pull the emergency chain and evacuate the train.

Panic Leads to Fatal Mistake

The chaos began when sparks, potentially caused by a hot axle or brake-binding, led passengers to believe a fire had broken out in one of the train’s coaches. A railway official confirmed that when the emergency chain was pulled, many passengers rushed to exit the train. As they jumped off, they landed directly onto the parallel track, where the Karnataka Express, traveling from Bengaluru to Delhi, struck them.

Eight ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and local hospitals were put on high alert to treat the injured. Fadnavis also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who perished in the tragedy. District and railway authorities are coordinating efforts to ensure medical care for the victims.

Her son and daughter-in-law filed a police complaint after discovering the incident days later. Authorities are investigating and ensuring action is taken.
</excerpt>

It has been reported that an elderly woman was allegedly beaten up, branded with a hot iron rod and made to consume urine over claims of practicing black magic in Amravati district of Maharashtra. The incident had occurred on 30 December at Retyakheda village under Chikhaldara taluka and was discovered after her son and daughter-in-law filed a police complaint a few days back, PTI reports.

The complainants revealed in their letter to the district collector and superintendent of police that the woman was home alone when neighbors accused her of witchcraft and subjected her to horrific abuse. “The angry villagers allegedly hit her with a wooden stick, slapped and thrashed her. They then also branded her with hot iron rods on her hands and legs,” they stated. The woman was allegedly made to drink urine and canine excreta before she was taken out in a procession by garlanding slippers around her neck.

She was informed by her family about the incident on January 5, who also immediately lodged the complaint with the police. Superintendent of Police of Amravati Vishal Anand described it as “a serious case.” He confirmed that the complainants had spoken directly to him.

“The village is in the interiors of a forest, and a police official has been sent to verify the event,” he told PTI. He further said that authorities would probe whether the police station handling the complaint attempted to suppress details of the case, assuring that appropriate action would be taken.

Authorities are investigating whether the incident was accidental or intentional.
</excerpt>

On the night of December 29, a chaotic situation unfolded along the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Highway when over 50 vehicles, including cars and cargo trucks, suffered punctured tires after driving over an iron board that had fallen onto the road. The incident took place around 10 pm, between the Malegaon and Vanoja toll plazas in the Washim district. The unexpected obstacle led to a long traffic jam, with vehicles stranded for several hours due to the damage caused.

Commuters Stranded Overnight

In addition to the punctured tires, the situation left many commuters stranded on the highway overnight, as no immediate assistance arrived to clear the blockage or help with the repairs. The incident raised concerns regarding the lack of timely support and the impact it had on travellers.

Authorities are investigating whether the iron board fell accidentally or if it was intentionally placed on the road. The timing of the incident, during peak travel hours, only added to the confusion and panic among commuters.

A Closer Look at the Samruddhi Highway Safety Concerns

This incident comes at a time when the safety of the Samruddhi Highway has been called into question. Just months earlier, in June, a deadly collision occurred near Kadwanchi village in the Jalna district, involving two cars, which led to six deaths and four injuries. This raised alarms about the safety measures in place on this high-speed corridor.

Background of Samruddhi Mahamarg

The Samruddhi Mahamarg, one of India’s longest greenfield road projects, stretches 701 kilometers, connecting Mumbai to Nagpur. This partially functional six-lane expressway, which was built at a cost of Rs 55,000 crore, aims to reduce travel time significantly between these two major cities. While it promises to enhance connectivity, the recent incident sheds light on ongoing concerns related to highway safety and infrastructure maintenance.

Authorities have vowed to look into these safety issues, as commuters continue to voice concerns about the infrastructure’s reliability.

</excerpt>

A computer operator employed at a state-run sports complex in Maharashtra, earning a monthly salary of just Rs 13,000, has allegedly embezzled a staggering Rs 21 crore. The accused, Harshal Kumar Kshirsagar, reportedly used the funds to purchase luxury cars and a 4 BHK flat for his girlfriend. He is currently on the run, while police have arrested his colleague Yashoda Shetty and her husband BK Jeevan for allegedly aiding him in the scheme.

Details of the Fraudulent Activities

The investigation has revealed a meticulously planned operation by the 23-year-old Kshirsagar. He reportedly used an old letterhead from the sports complex to send an email to the bank, requesting a change in the email address linked to the complex’s account. By creating a new email account that was nearly identical to the original—differing by just one letter—he gained access to the bank account’s OTPs and other necessary information for transactions.

Once he had control, Kshirsagar activated the Internet banking facility for the divisional sports complex committee’s bank account. Between July 1 and December 7 of this year, he allegedly transferred Rs 21.6 crore into 13 different bank accounts.

Lavish Purchases and Ongoing Investigation

The funds were reportedly used to acquire a BMW car worth Rs 1.2 crore, an SUV costing Rs 1.3 crore, and a BMW motorcycle valued at Rs 32 lakh. Additionally, Kshirsagar gifted his girlfriend a luxurious 4 BHK flat near the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar airport and ordered a diamond-studded pair of glasses for her.

Authorities suspect that more individuals may be involved in this extensive fraud and are currently gathering documents related to the bank accounts used in the scheme. The luxury vehicles purchased with the embezzled funds have been seized as police continue their search for Kshirsagar.

The fraud came to light when a sports department official noticed financial irregularities and filed a complaint. Senior police officer Prashant Kadam confirmed that three individuals have been named in the FIR, stating, “Two accused have been arrested, one is on the run. Our teams are looking for the main accused.”

According to police officials, the accused, Jaki Gulam Murtaza Khotal, 65, is currently at large.
The six state ministers sworn in are BJP’s Madhuri Misal, Pankaj Bhoar, and Meghna Bordikar; Shiv Sena’s Ashish Jaiswal and Yogesh Kadam; and NCP’s Indranil Naik.

Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant pledged his commitment to the Mahayuti government’s initiatives. “We will work for the people of Maharashtra under Eknath Shinde’s leadership. We will further the Mahayuti government’s initiatives under Devendra Fadnavis. We function as a family and will ensure smooth governance,” he said.

Sanjay Shirsath, also of Shiv Sena, reflected on his journey and the performance-based tenure system introduced by Deputy CM Shinde. “It feels incredible. Today, we are reaping the fruits of 40 years of hard work. Eknath Shinde has stated that ministerial tenures will be for 2.5 years, extendable based on performance. This is an excellent formula,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Nitesh Rane expressed gratitude for his new role and outlined his commitment to the state’s development. “I thank everyone for entrusting me, a young Hindutva activist, with the responsibility of a ministerial post. We will strive to develop Maharashtra,” Rane said.

This cabinet expansion comes two weeks after Fadnavis and his deputies were sworn in on December 5. The Mahayuti alliance, which secured a landslide victory in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections with 235 seats, faced criticism for delaying the cabinet announcement despite its substantial majority. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 132 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 57 and NCP with 41 seats.

</excerpt>

Mumbai, Dec 3: Even as the BJP is all set to hold its meeting of the newly elected MLAs to elect its.leader for the legislative assembly and also announce the Chief Ministerial candidate, the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde holds the key for the Maharashtra government given the fact that he is one of the most popular leader in the state.

The BJP has announced Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani as the party’s observer for Maharashtra. Both the leaders are all set to hold the meeting tomorrow in Mumbai to decide the next leader of party in the assembly.

With Shinde himself announcing that he will not prove to be a speedbreaker for the Mahayuti government and any proposal by the central BJP leadership will be acceptable to him has only ignited the debate on how the BJP treats its alliance partners.

The sources said that Shinde wants Home department and the post ofnthe Spasker even as rhe meeting of the Mahayuti leaders is again expected to finalise the portfolios in the state, where the Mahayuti got the massive mandate in the assembly polls where it won 230 out of 288 seats. The BJP won 132, while Shinde led Shiv Sena won 57 and Ajit Pawar-led NCP won 41 seats in the state.

According to BJP sources, the BJP, Shiv Sena and Left parties are considered the cadre based parties. And given the fact that Shinde broke away with the Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray in 2021 with 40 MLAs and most of the party workers would need proper respect from the BJP.

The source said that the BJP leaders feel that the Shiv Sena led by Shinde faction deserves respect and it must be given nine portfolios like it had got previously.

Meanwhile, the Shinde faction is yet to agree on the BJP’s demands of giving up on home department. However, the Shinde led Shiv Sena is demanding for the Home portfolio and the post of the assembly speaker.

Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar had already met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and also BJP national president JP Nadda in the national capital. According to sources, BJP leadership clearly indicated that the Chief Minister post will be with it and they need to finalise the portfolios among themselves.

However, after returning from the national capital Shinde had left for Satara to his ancestral village. He returned to Mumbai last evening and still the three leaders are yet to have a video conference call to discuss the portfolios.

So it now left to be seen whether Shinde will finalise the portfolios ahead of swearing in ceremony or the process will get delayed and more Minister’s will be sworn in after the oath ceremony of Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministersin the state.

The first session of Assembly will take place from November 7 to 9 for the oath taking process of all MLAs.

Details about the exercise were shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the Additional Directorate General of Public Information, IHQ of MoD (Army).

The exercise will be conducted at the Devlali Field Firing Ranges, part of the School of Artillery in Maharashtra. Its primary objective is to enhance professional military interactions between the artillery units of the Indian Army and the Singapore Armed Forces.

The ADGPI noted that the exercise will facilitate the exchange of best practices between the two nations’ armies. Additionally, it will provide a platform for cultural exchanges, further strengthening the bond between India and Singapore.

The exercise follows the visit of Dr. Ng Eng Hen, Singapore’s Minister of Defence, to India last month. Dr. Ng co-chaired the sixth India-Singapore Defence Ministers’ Dialogue in New Delhi with his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh. During the dialogue, the ministers agreed to intensify defence cooperation and set new milestones as the two countries approach 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2025. They also extended the bilateral agreement on the Joint Military Training Army for an additional five years.

The ministers recognized the natural partnership between India and Singapore for co-development and co-production of defence equipment. They pledged to enhance industry cooperation, with a focus on collaboration in niche areas such as automation and artificial intelligence.

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that India-Singapore relations were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024. With a shared history, a long tradition of trust and mutual respect, and extensive cooperation across diverse sectors, India-Singapore ties have deepened and diversified over the years.

He stressed that the Mahayuti alliance remains united and committed to a prosperous Maharashtra. “After the great victory of Mahayuti, our government will be formed again. We contested the elections together and remain united,” Shinde wrote. He thanked his supporters but requested that they not assemble at his residence.
On the same day, Shinde, along with Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, met Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the current assembly’s term ends.

Sources within the BJP say it could take another seven days to decide on the new CM and oath-taking.

Shiv Sainiks Hold Prayers for Shinde’s Second Term

In Thane, Shiv Sainiks held prayer meetings, hoping for Shinde’s reappointment. Supporters at the Siddhi Vinayak Temple and other locations attributed Mahayuti’s victory to Shinde’s leadership and his connection with the people. MP Naresh Mhaske said all Shiv Sainiks believe Shinde deserves another term as CM. He also hoped Mahayuti leaders would adopt the merit-based approach seen in states like Bihar.

Thane, Shinde’s home turf, showed strong support for his leadership. Shinde had won his seat in Kopri-Pachpakhadi by over 1.2 lakh votes.

Maharashtra Election Results and Government Formation

Mahayuti won a decisive victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections. However, government formation has been delayed. Reports suggest the BJP and NCP are supporting Devendra Fadnavis for CM, while Shinde’s faction wants him to stay.

The BJP secured a record 132 seats, while Shinde’s Shiv Sena won 57. The new government is expected to have two deputy CMs, with BJP getting 24 ministers, Shiv Sena 12, and NCP 10.

Shinde, Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar are expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah soon to finalize the formation.

Maharashtra Government Formation Timeline

Though reports suggested a new CM might be sworn in by November 26, no decision has been made yet. An official dismissed rumors of President’s Rule being imposed if the new government isn’t formed by the end of the current assembly’s term. The 15th Maharashtra Assembly is already in place, with the names of newly-elected members submitted to Governor Radhakrishnan, the Election Commission confirmed.

Election Victory Ends On A Grim Note

Shivaji Patil has recently achieved a landslide victory against NCP candidate Rajesh Patil in the Chandgad constituency. Shivaji Patil’s margin of victory was of 84,254 votes over 60,120 votes of Rajesh Patil, which means a difference of more than 24,000 votes. The victory was more meaningful because in 2019 Rajesh Patil had overflowed the 2019 outcome, by beating Shivaji Patil by over 4,000 votes.

Injuries Reported Amid Celebratory Chaos

After the incident, Shivaji Patil and female aides were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. Patil as well as some of his supporters who were present at the scene of the accident suffered from burn injuries that are the main injury pattern in these cases. This sudden change in the history of the celebration which was intended to be the night of glory is the factor that seized the mood of the ceremony.

Further, Police officers’ is investigating into the incident to prevent the reoccurrence of such a mishap.

</excerpt>

The results of the Maharashtra Assembly elections began trending in the United Kingdom on the morning of Saturday, November 23. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti alliance has crossed the halfway mark in the state’s 288-seat assembly, according to the latest trends. Search activity related to the election was predominantly from England, with Scotland also showing significant interest. Maharashtra, India’s financial capital and the country’s wealthiest state by GDP per capita, has a large expatriate community in the UK, making these results particularly significant for both local and international observers.

Mahayuti Alliance Set to Retain Power

The Mahayuti coalition, which includes the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), the BJP, and smaller allies, has secured 209 seats in the state legislature, comfortably surpassing the majority mark of 145 seats. Eknath Shinde, the current chief minister, is projected to continue leading the government, consolidating the position of the ruling alliance in Maharashtra. Despite projections of anti-incumbency sentiments, the Mahayuti has emerged victorious, demonstrating its continued support among voters.

MVA Struggles to Make a Mark

On the other hand, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), an opposition coalition of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar, had positioned itself as a unified front against the ruling Mahayuti. However, the alliance’s campaign appears to have failed to capture the electorate’s imagination, as reflected in the current trends. The MVA, despite efforts to present a strong alternative, struggled to make a significant impact.

High Voter Turnout Reflects Engagement with the Election

Maharashtra saw a notable increase in voter turnout during this year’s election. According to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the state recorded a 66.05% voter turnout in this single-phase election, marking a rise from 61.1% in the previous 2019 assembly elections. The surge in voter participation highlights the public’s active engagement in the democratic process, despite concerns over anti-incumbency factors.

Implications for Maharashtra’s Future

As Maharashtra continues to be a key economic engine for India, the election results are expected to have a significant impact not only on the state’s political landscape but also on its economic trajectory. With the ruling Mahayuti alliance poised to continue its governance, the direction of economic policies, particularly in sectors like finance, infrastructure, and agriculture, will be closely watched. Additionally, the results will have ripple effects within Maharashtra’s diaspora communities in the UK, many of whom have a vested interest in the state’s growth and political stability.

The final results will shape the future of Maharashtra as both a political and economic powerhouse within India and abroad.

In Maharashtra, the ruling Mahayuti alliance—which includes the BJP, Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena—is leading in 164 out of 288 seats, surpassing the majority mark of 145. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), a coalition of Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar’s NCP, trails with 97 seats.

The state saw a voter turnout of 66.05% in its single-phase elections. Key constituencies include:

Worli: Aaditya Thackeray (Shiv Sena UBT) faces Milind Deora (Shinde faction).

Nagpur South West: BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis is up against Congress’ Prafful Gudadhe.

Baramati: Ajit Pawar contests against his nephew Yugendra Pawar.

Exit polls had largely predicted a victory for the Mahayuti alliance, though one forecast suggested a tight contest.

Jharkhand Trends

In Jharkhand, a neck-and-neck battle is unfolding. The ruling INDIA bloc, led by Hemant Soren’s JMM, is ahead in 37 seats, while the NDA leads in 39. The majority mark in the 81-seat assembly is 42.

The elections, held in two phases with a turnout of 67.74%, featured intense campaigning. The BJP accused the JMM-led government of corruption, while Soren’s coalition emphasized welfare schemes and criticized the alleged misuse of federal agencies.

Key battles include:

Barhait: Hemant Soren faces BJP’s Gamaliyan Hembrom.

Jamtara: Congress’ Irfan Ansari contests against Sita Soren, Hemant Soren’s sister-in-law.

Bypolls and Other Key Seats

Votes are also being counted for 48 assembly bypolls across 13 states and two parliamentary constituencies:

Nanded (Maharashtra): The BJP seeks to retain this prestige seat.

Wayanad (Kerala): Congress focuses on retaining this constituency, previously held by Rahul Gandhi, with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra making her electoral debut.

</excerpt>

Exit polls following the Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections suggest an edge for the NDA, but uncertainties linger ahead of the vote count on November 23.

In Maharashtra, six out of ten exit polls predict a clear advantage for the NDA (Mahayuti), while one indicates a near-equal contest, and three favor the INDIA bloc (Maha Vikas Aghadi). The projections for NDA seats in the 288-member assembly range from 157 (P-Marq) to 195 (People’s Pulse). Poll Diary predicts 122–186 seats for the NDA and 69–121 seats for the INDIA alliance, highlighting significant overlaps in the estimates.

Meanwhile, in Jharkhand’s 81-member house, three of seven exit polls give a clear edge to the NDA, with Times Now-JVC suggesting a close race where INDIA nears the majority mark of 41 seats. Dainik Bhaskar forecasts a neck-and-neck contest with no clear majority for either alliance, while two pollsters project a win for the INDIA bloc.

The exit poll predictions come amid recent skepticism over their accuracy, following missteps in the Lok Sabha and Haryana elections earlier this year. With results due soon, all eyes are on whether these forecasts will hold true.

</excerpt>

Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole, in a statement to ANI on Wednesday, expressed confidence in the party’s prospects for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. He cited growing public discontent with the BJP-led administration and its allies as a key factor.

“In Maharashtra, people are angry with the BJP and its alliance. This anger has been reflected in their votes. The vote percentage has increased,” Patole remarked.

Responding to allegations of his involvement in a Bitcoin scam, Patole asserted that the BJP’s accusations had backfired, garnering public sympathy for the Congress.
“The people are laughing at this move by the BJP. We have gained public sympathy. The people of Maharashtra know my character. Regarding the audio shared by BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi, people believe the BJP is acting out of fear of defeat. We filed an FIR last night,” he added.

On Tuesday, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi held a press conference accusing Congress leader Nana Patole and NCP MP Supriya Sule of conspiring to use illicit Bitcoin transactions to influence the election results in favor of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Trivedi presented an alleged audio clip linked to these transactions, claiming it implicated “big names.”

“An accused dealer contacts a former police officer, previously jailed, stating his intention to conduct Bitcoin transactions in cash. The officer refuses, but the dealer tries to convince him, claiming that a few ‘big people’ are involved, allegedly naming Nana Patole and Supriya Sule. When the officer expresses doubt, the dealer sends him audio clips,” Trivedi alleged.

He further posed a series of questions to the Congress Party:
“First, are you involved in Bitcoin transactions? Second, are you in contact with individuals named Gaurav Gupta or Mehta? Third, are the chats in question those of your leaders? Fourth, is the audio in the clips authentic? Fifth, who are the ‘big people’ mentioned?”

Additionally, retired IPS officer Ravindranath Patil from Pune accused Supriya Sule and Nana Patole of being involved in a cryptocurrency fraud case dating back to 2018. He claimed that funds from this fraud were utilized to finance election campaigns.

Salman Under Radar

Salman Khan has been under constant security due to threats linked to the 1998 blackbuck poaching case. Recently, an alleged member of Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang issued a threat against him while claiming responsibility for politician Baba Siddique’s death. The Mumbai Police responded by increasing Salman’s security, ensuring his safety during public appearances.

Salman wasn’t the only star exercising his democratic rights. Several Bollywood celebrities, including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Kartik Aaryan, and Kiara Advani, were spotted at polling stations throughout the day.

Salman’s Upcoming Film: Sikandar

On the work front, Salman Khan is gearing up for his next film, Sikandar, alongside Rashmika Mandanna. Directed by A.R. Murugadoss and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the film is slated for release on Eid 2025. The combination of Murugadoss’s distinctive directorial style and Nadiadwala’s production expertise has already created substantial buzz around the project.

</excerpt>

The Election Commission has reported that enforcement agencies have seized over Rs 1,000 crore worth of cash, liquor, and other inducements during the ongoing elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and across 14 states where bypolls are being held. Of this amount, Rs 858 crore has been confiscated from Maharashtra and Jharkhand, marking a sevenfold increase compared to the 2019 assembly elections. In 2019, Maharashtra recorded seizures worth Rs 103.61 crore, while Jharkhand’s total was Rs 18.76 crore.

The second round of voting in Jharkhand is scheduled for November 20, coinciding with Maharashtra’s polling date. Votes for both states will be counted on November 23.

In Maharashtra, significant seizures have been made across all districts, surpassing figures from previous assembly elections. Notable operations include the confiscation of Rs 3.70 crore in cash from a suspicious Jeep in the Wada police station area of Palghar District. Additionally, in the Jamod Assembly Constituency of Buldhana district, authorities seized 4,500 kg of ganja plants valued at Rs 4.51 crore. In Raigad, silver bars worth Rs 5.20 crore were confiscated.

The Election Commission’s intensified focus on curbing the influence of money in elections has led to this substantial increase in seizures. Chief Election Officer Rajiv Kumar has instructed all officials and observers to maintain strict vigilance over the next two days and to prevent the distribution of any inducements until polling concludes.

Jharkhand has also witnessed record seizures, with a particular emphasis on curbing illicit mining activities. In Rajmahal Assembly Constituency of Sahibganj district, illegal mining materials worth ₹2.26 crore were seized, along with the machinery involved. In Daltonganj, authorities confiscated 687 kg of poppy straw, while in Hazaribagh, 48.18 kg of marijuana was seized.

In Rajasthan, enforcement agencies intercepted 449 cartons of liquor concealed behind layers of potato boxes in Nagaur, during transit from one neighboring state to another.

The surge in seizures is attributed to an extensive monitoring process initiated months before the election announcements. This process includes sensitizing and reviewing enforcement agencies for coordinated monitoring, identifying expenditure-sensitive constituencies, ensuring adequate field teams, providing training on expenditure monitoring systems, and appointing experienced officers as Expenditure Observers.

The Election Commission has also invested in information technology to enhance monitoring efforts. The in-house Election Seizure Management System (ESMS) facilitates real-time monitoring and information sharing among multiple agencies, serving as a broader deterrent against electoral malpractices.
