The government also allocated ₹7,421 crore to the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) over three years for river cleanup efforts.
</excerpt>

The government has asserted in the center that the Ganga water quality at Triveni Sangam of Prayagraj was suitable for bathing during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh. Referring to a fresh report from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the government put up this information in Parliament on Monday (March 11).

Triveni Sangam is the holy confluence where the Ganga and the Yamuna and mythological Saraswati rivers join. The Maha Kumbh, the world’s largest religious congregation, draws millions of pilgrims who take ritualistic dips in the holy waters.

Government Allots Rs 7,421 Crore for Cleaning Ganga

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav told Parliament that the government gave Rs 7,421 crore to the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) during three financial years—2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25 (upto March 9). The money is to make the river cleaner and its water safe for religious and public consumption.

Replying to queries by Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadauria and Congress MP K Sudhakaran, Yadav pointed to the CPCB report that said important water quality parameters—pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and faecal coliform (FC)—were within bathing water permissible limits at all the locations that were monitored.

DO quantifies oxygen in water, BOD determines the oxygen required to decompose organic material, and FC represents sewage pollution. These parameters are critical in analyzing water quality and safety.

Comparative Reports: CPCB’s Updated Findings

Earlier, a February 3 CPCB report, which was presented to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), had stated that water quality at certain points in Prayagraj was not up to primary bathing standards because of excessive faecal coliform content.

But in a follow-up report on February 28, the CPCB made it clear that statistical evaluation proved the water was suitable for bathing. The board said that variability in data from samples collected on different dates and from different locations within the same area needed a wider statistical examination. The report made it clear that individual sample results could not accurately represent the overall quality of river water.

NGT Orders Continuous Monitoring of Water Quality

In the matter of “Kamlesh Singh vs State of Uttar Pradesh & Others,” the NGT ordered ongoing monitoring of Maha Kumbh water quality of Ganga and Yamuna to verify compliance with key water quality parameters. The CPCB embarked on a detailed monitoring regimen as a result of this directive.

Water quality tests were also done at seven points twice weekly, from Shringverpur Ghat (upstream of Prayagraj) to Deehaghat (downstream). Checks were also conducted at Sangam nose, the precise location where the Ganga and Yamuna confluence. Testing was started on January 12 and carried on through prime bathing days of the Maha Kumbh.

Steps Taken to Provide Clean Water in Ganga

Several wastewater treatment options were adopted by the Uttar Pradesh government to provide water quality.

Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs): Ten STPs were installed for Maha Kumbh to treat wastewater before discharge into the river.

Geosynthetic Dewatering Tubes (Geo-Tubes): Seven geo-tubes were employed to filter water from 21 untreated drains as a temporary measure for wastewater treatment.

Prefabricated STPs: Three temporary STPs with a capacity of 500 kilolitres per day (KLD) each were installed in the mela area.

Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants: Three sludge treatment plants of a capacity of 200 KLD were provided.

Advanced Oxidation Technology: UP Jal Nigam utilized advanced oxidation methods for the treatment of wastewater, thereby not allowing untreated water to get into the Ganga.

Further, authorities ensured there were adequate toilets and urinals to meet the huge flow of pilgrims. Strategically positioned dustbins with liner bags proved effective in managing waste.

Continuous Improvement in Water Monitoring

In order to improve the accuracy of water quality monitoring, the CPCB increased its monitoring on February 21. The number of monitoring sites was raised from seven to ten, and water quality tests were carried out twice a day.

The government’s proactive initiatives and enhanced monitoring reflect its zeal to preserve the sanctity and security of the Ganga at the time of major religious festivals. The Maha Kumbh’s stature requires adherence to environmental norms at all costs, and authorities continue to streamline their strategy for providing clean and safe water to millions of pilgrims.

He highlighted the event’s economic impact, contributing Rs. 3.5 lakh crore to Uttar Pradesh’s economy.
</excerpt>

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presented an encouraging success story of the recently held Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. While participating in a discussion on the state’s budget for 2025-26, the CM gave the information that a boatman and his family made Rs. 30 crore in 45 days. The boatman, owning 130 boats, earned an average profit of Rs. 23 lakh per boat, or Rs. 50,000-Rs. 52,000 daily.

“A family of boatmen who possessed 130 boats earned Rs. 30 crore as a whole over a period of 45 days at the time of Mahakumbh. It implies each boat earned Rs. 23 lakh over 45 days, which approximates to about Rs. 50,000-52,000 every day,” explained Yogi Adityanath.

The Chief Minister also pointed out the economic importance of the Maha Kumbh, stating that it had brought in more than 66 crore sadhus and devotees to bathe at the Sangam. He highlighted the global presence, with people from more than 100 nations visiting, a good blend of tradition and progress that was above caste, region, and religion.

Denying charges of discrimination at the festival, Adityanath categorically stated that the Maha Kumbh was for everyone, asserting that it reflected Uttar Pradesh’s prowess on the global platform. He rebutted opposition claims, highlighting the commitment of the visitors and the unshakeable faith of the pilgrims. “For the opposition, the pilgrims coming to the Maha Kumbh were a vote bank, while for us, they were our faith and heritage.That’s why citizens believe in our government,” he added, referring to the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Yogi Adityanath also pointed to the huge economic input the Maha Kumbh had brought to the state economy. He put the overall input at Rs. 3.5 lakh crore, with major sectors benefiting:

Rs. 40,000 crore from the hotel sector

Rs. 33,000 crore from food and daily necessities

Rs. 1.5 lakh crore from transport

Rs. 20,000 crore from religious donations

Rs. 660 crore from contributions

Rs. 300 crore from toll tax

Rs. 66,000 crore from miscellaneous economic activities

The fields were covered with a significant quantity of waste such as garlands, plastic waste, and debris from temporary tents. Yogi Adityanath ordered workers to finish cleaning the Mela fields, roads, and permanent and temporary buildings within 15 days.

Police crack the case in 48 hours and arrest him.
</excerpt>

A couple from Delhi’s Trilokpuri traveled to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh festival, with the husband capturing their moments in photos and videos, which he shared with their children, portraying a happy trip. They checked into a modest homestay for the night, but by morning, the wife was found murdered in the bathroom.

The Prayagraj Commissionerate Police cracked the case within 48 hours, arresting the husband for the brutal crime committed on the night of February 18 in the Jhunsi area of the city.

Crime Scene Discovery

On the morning of February 19, police were alerted about the body of a 40-year-old woman found in a blood-soaked state in the bathroom of a homestay in Azad Nagar Colony, under the Jhunsi police station’s jurisdiction. The property was being used to host pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh festival.

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found that the woman had been brutally murdered, her throat slit with a sharp weapon.

Initial investigations revealed that the woman had checked into the homestay with a man the previous night, presenting themselves as husband and wife. The homestay manager had allotted them a room without verifying their identities or collecting any identification proof. The following morning, he discovered the gruesome crime and immediately alerted the police.

How The Case Was Solved

Investigations found that the victim had traveled from Delhi to Prayagraj with her husband on February 18. The police circulated the woman’s photograph on social media and in newspapers, which led to her relatives identifying her on February 21.

The victim was identified as Meenakshi, wife of Ashok Kumar, a sanitation worker from Trilokpuri, Delhi. Her brother, Pravesh Kumar, and her two sons, Ashwani and Adarsh, rushed to Prayagraj after recognizing her photograph. At Jhunsi police station, they confirmed her identity.

Following this, the police registered a case against Ashok Kumar and tracked him down. He was arrested soon after.

Murder Motivated by an Affair

During interrogation, Ashok Kumar admitted to planning his wife’s murder for three months. He was involved in an extramarital affair and wanted to eliminate Meenakshi to continue his relationship freely.

To execute his plan, Ashok convinced Meenakshi to accompany him to the Maha Kumbh pilgrimage on February 17. The next day, they arrived in Jhunsi and checked into a homestay.

That night, an argument broke out between them. When Meenakshi went into the bathroom, Ashok seized the opportunity, attacking her from behind and slitting her throat with a knife. He then changed out of his bloodstained clothes, wrapped the murder weapon with them, and disposed of the evidence before fleeing the scene.

To create an alibi, Ashok called his son Ashish later and claimed that Meenakshi had gone missing in the crowded fair. Pretending to be distressed, he told his children that he had searched for her but could not find her.

Unraveling the Truth

Suspicious of his father’s story, Meenakshi’s son Ashwin started his own search. On February 20, the family arrived at the Maha Kumbh with Meenakshi’s photograph and began looking for her.

Meanwhile, police gathered CCTV footage and forensic evidence from the crime scene. Surveillance footage from February 18 showed Ashok and Meenakshi together, and just a day before the murder, Ashok had uploaded a video of them taking a sacred dip at the Sangam.

Inconsistencies in Ashok’s statements, along with CCTV footage and forensic reports, ultimately led to his arrest.

Authorities freed the 65-year-old woman from a Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) quarter located in Subhash Nagar colony, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ramgarh police station, on Wednesday.

Survived on Flattened Rice, Neighbors Alerted Authorities

The aged woman had been confined in the home since Monday, surviving solely on flattened rice (Chura). Her pleas for assistance due to hunger drew the attention of neighbors, who subsequently uncovered her situation, according to police officials.

Daughter Informed Police, Lock Was Broken for Rescue

Ramgarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Parmeshwar Prasad verified the occurrence, declaring, “The elderly woman, recognized as Sanju Devi, was locked by her son, Akhilesh Kumar, in his CCL quarter since Monday. She was rescued on Wednesday after her daughter alerted police. ”

Officials also observed that Akhilesh Kumar works for CCL. Another police officer remarked that Kumar asserted he had made all essential provisions for his mother’s nourishment and hydration prior to departing for Prayagraj.

Daughter Rushed to Help After Neighbor’s Call

Chandni Devi, the daughter of the woman, who resides approximately five kilometers away in Kahubera, stated that she was notified about her mother’s predicament by neighbors via telephone.

“Police rescued her after forcing the lock. The neighbors quickly provided her with food. She was also administered medications and taken to CCL hospital,” she conveyed to reporters.

Son Employed in CCL on Compassionate Grounds

As per Ms. Devi, her brother Akhilesh Kumar obtained his position at CCL on compassionate grounds and is currently employed as a shovel operator in the Argada region of Ramgarh district.

The NGT has pulled up authorities over pollution mismanagement.
</excerpt>

The sacred Ganga River in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, revered by millions, is battling severe contamination, as revealed by a recent government report. The findings indicate dangerously high levels of faecal coliform bacteria in the water, raising serious concerns as the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela witnesses millions of devotees taking a holy dip.

Report Highlights Unsafe Water Quality

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), faecal coliform bacteria levels in the Ganga have far exceeded permissible limits at key locations. The water quality report states that at Shastri Bridge, the bacterial count reached 11,000 MPN/100ml, while at Sangam, it stood at 7,900 MPN/100ml. These figures are significantly higher than the CPCB’s safe limit of 2,500 MPN/100ml for bathing water. The Yamuna River, just before merging with the Ganga at Sangam, recorded 4,900 MPN/100ml.

Understanding Faecal Coliform Contamination

Faecal coliform bacteria originate from human and animal waste and indicate potential contamination with harmful pathogens. The presence of these bacteria suggests a risk of waterborne diseases, including typhoid, cholera, diarrhea, and skin infections. According to Dr. Atul Kakar, a senior consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, water with such contamination levels is unsafe for consumption and bathing, posing severe health risks to devotees and local communities relying on the river.

Impact on Public Health and Aquatic Life

Experts warn that contaminated water not only endangers human health but also disrupts the aquatic ecosystem. A US-based water research program, KnowYourH2O, stated that untreated faecal matter in water leads to oxygen depletion, threatening marine life and increasing pollution levels. Continuous exposure to such bacteria can lead to digestive, skin, and respiratory infections, making it a pressing public health concern.

National Green Tribunal (NGT) Takes Action

Following the alarming CPCB report, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken cognizance of the issue and criticised the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) for its inadequate response. The tribunal noted non-compliance with previous directives and flagged the UPPCB’s failure to submit a comprehensive action report. In response, the NGT has directed UPPCB officials and state authorities responsible for Ganga’s water quality to appear virtually at the next hearing on February 19.

Authorities Under Pressure to Act

With millions of devotees expected to participate in the Maha Kumbh Mela, authorities face mounting pressure to implement urgent measures to improve water quality. The situation demands immediate intervention, including stricter pollution control measures and enhanced water treatment efforts to ensure the safety of pilgrims and local residents.

The report underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions to preserve the sanctity of the Ganga while safeguarding public health. As the authorities gear up for the next hearing, all eyes remain on their response to this critical environmental and health crisis.

Officials cited overcrowding as the cause, while the opposition criticized station handling and safety measures. The Railways has offered compensation to the victims’ families and the injured.
</excerpt>

The New Delhi Railway Station tragedy on Saturday evening resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals, including 14 women and 3 children. The stampede, coming on the heels of the Maha Kumbh Triveni Sangam disaster, suggests continuing worries about public safety during crowded events and at railway stations. The quick buildup of crowds at the station sparked concerns about whether the administration was ready to manage such huge crowds in the face of constant criticism.

Photos from the site indicated that random items, like shoes, slippers, attire, and drinking water, lay scattered behind when rescuers went about their tasks. Personnel were deployed rapidly to clear the environment.

The relatives of the dead were frustrated. Pintu Sharma, who lost Pinky Devi in the accident, was critical about the station authorities: “They had valid tickets. There were about 14 to 15 people traveling to Maha Kumbh. When they arrived at the station, a stampede occurred. The line of the train was shifted which led to the stampede. The force also arrived late… It occurred due to the negligence of the station authority.”

Balram, one of the porters, said the scene was chaotic, and he explained: “We moved dead bodies in handcarts, the same kind we use to carry luggage. I have not seen such a huge crowd as a porter for 15 years. People’s shoes, slippers, and other items were lying all around. We brought out many kids and old people from the debris.”

Stampede was caused by a huge rush of travelers on platforms 14 and 15, all in a hurry to catch Prayagraj-bound trains for the Maha Kumbh. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi attributed the accident to the Railways and the government’s insensitivity and said, “This incident is once again reflective of the Railways’ failure and the sensitivity of the government. More care should have been taken at the station considering the huge number of devotees visiting Prayagraj.”

As a response, the Railways has offered compensation to the families of the victims: Rs 10 lakh for the dead, Rs 2.5 lakh for the seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for the lightly injured.

</excerpt>

For millions of Hindu pilgrims, the Kumbh Mela festival is the highest act of devotional worship in ritual bathing where the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythological Saraswati rivers supposedly meet. In this sacred site, which has been taking place for hundreds of generations, the Nishad community has played a most important role as boatmen who ferry these pilgrims in narrow wooden boats across the confluence.

Despite new safety restrictions this year, these boatmen continue to provide invaluable service devoutly in their sacred duty faithfully to the devoted faithful.

Nishad Community: Lifelong Service Under Sacred Obligations

“We take the devotees to the holy place in our boat,” said 52-year-old boatman Chhote Lal Nishad. He expressed this after ferrying six pilgrims out into the water at dawn in his narrow wooden boat. “We permit pilgrims to bathe with love and happiness and then return safely.”

Chhote Lal, like most of his friends, believes that his family’s profession is a sacred legacy passed down through generations. Besides ferrying the pilgrims to the riverbanks, the boatmen also take it upon themselves to narrate the religious significance of the waters and the history of the Kumbh Mela. Their deep knowledge of the rivers and their surroundings also makes them integral in rescuing drowning bathers during the festival.

Hindus believe that bathing in these holy waters purifies one’s soul, cleansing them of sin, breaking the cycle of rebirth, and bringing them closer to salvation. The Nishad boatmen’s role, thus, extends beyond mere transportation. They are the guardians of an ancient and spiritual profession.

New Generation of Boatmen Upholds Tradition

While it is an year-round tradition to continue with, the work comes at its height during the festival of Kumbh Mela. The Mela, after a 12-year break, was set to start earlier this month at Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. Already, tens of millions of devotees have come to take bath in the festival. Nishad boatmen are carrying out their work although the administration does not allow the access to restricted areas due to safety reasons.

Viraj Nishad, 23, is part of the new generation of boatmen and is determined to carry on his family’s proud tradition. “It is because of us that devotees can visit the holy site and take a dip in the river,” he said with pride.

While the traditional occupation of carrying pilgrims toward the heart of the confluence of the rivers Ganges and Yamuna still thrives from these boatmen, the Government has restricted free entry to congested areas owing to safety risks. However, they are found still ferrying people to comparatively lesser crowded zones outside the densely congested ghat areas or the central baths.

Challenges and Hopes for a Better Future

Despite the restrictions, many pilgrims prefer the traditional wooden boats, rather than larger, more modern vessels. “The wooden boat moves slowly, and the joy and experience. Is something which you cannot feel in modern boats,” said Ajeet Kaur Prajapati, 60, from Delhi. She compared the pleasure of traveling in a wooden boat to the comfort of eating food cooked by one’s mother. “The pleasure of eating food cooked by your mother is the same pleasure as traveling in a wooden boat,” she added.

However, Chhote Lal Nishad vented their frustrations over their inability to carry on their trade freely. “The river is the only support for the Nishad community,” he said. “If there is no river we will die of hunger.” He was also very optimistic this year over Kumbh Mela that they would raise enough money to sustain their children but all were broken by these restrictions.

Temporary City for Pilgrims

This Kumbh Mela is something unique in religious gatherings anywhere else in the world. The size of the gathering is estimated to be as massive as a temporary city, expecting up to 400 million pilgrims throughout the festival. In February last month, tragedy befell the event when at least 30 people were killed and many more were injured in a stampede triggered by a surging crowd.

Despite these obstacles, the Nishad boatmen are quite dedicated to the role they play in the festival. They ferry pilgrims across to the holy waters, giving them not just a service but a deeply spiritual experience that is passed down from generation to generation. For them, the Kumbh Mela is more than just a religious event; it’s a way of life.

Another inspiring story is being shared by many, of a man who believes his girlfriend made him become successful in the Maha Kumbh Mela. A man selling neem chew sticks near the Sangam said that thanks to the girlfriend’s idea, he had been earning Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 in five days.

The video, shared by The Logical Indian, shows him saying, “I have already earned around Rs 30,000 to 40,000. This is my fifth day here. Sometimes it even goes up to Rs 9,000 or 10,000 at night, or Rs 5,000 or 6,000.” When asked who inspired him, he responded, “Brother, my girlfriend told me not to invest even a single rupee, just take it for free and earn money. And because of her, I’ve earned so much today. I respect her and everyone.”

Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, also commented on the significance of the event, telling ANI, “Maha Kumbh is an experience of a lifetime… The strong delegation of more than 70 nations took part in Maha Kumbh today, took a holy bath, and many of them even offered ‘Puja’… This is the strength of our Indian philosophy, culture, and religion. I was delighted to see the satisfaction of the ambassadors.”

The Maha Kumbh Mela, known as the festival of the sacred pitcher, is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and is considered the world’s largest public gathering and collective act of faith. The congregation primarily includes ascetics, saints, sadhus, sadhvis, kalpvasis, and pilgrims from all walks of life, according to the Maha Kumbh website.

The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 began in Prayagraj on January 13 and will continue until February 26. Held once every 144 years, it is a rare and spiritually significant event.

</excerpt>

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is to visit Prayagraj today, which would be his first visit after the stampede incident at the Maha Kumbh recently.

During the visit, the Chief Minister will visit Satua Baba Ashram in Sector-21 and Bharat Seva Shram Camp in Sector-5. He will also meet the Heads of Mission from other countries at the Mela Circuit House.

A delegation of 118 members, including Heads of Mission, diplomats, and their spouses from 77 countries, is also visiting the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj today.

Earlier this week, a stampede occurred during Mauni Amavasya at the Maha Kumbh Mela, killing at least 30 people.

A three-member judicial commission has been constituted to probe the incident. The panel recently visited Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital in Prayagraj, where most of the victims were admitted. The stampede occurred early Wednesday morning at the Sangam, leaving 30 dead and 90 others injured.

It further states that this commission will ascertain the causes and circumstances of such a tragedy that led to their death and prepare recommendations to help avoid such recurrence in the future. The said report is required to be made within a month.

Meanwhile, the Maha Kumbh continues to witness massive participation. Over 5.42 million devotees took a dip at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati on Saturday alone, including over 1 million Kalpavasis and 4.42 million pilgrims.

Since the event began on January 13, more than 314.6 million devotees have performed the holy dip.

The Maha Kumbh, till February 26, has these critical *snan* dates ahead: February 3, (Basant Panchami-Third Shahi Snan), February 12, (Maghi Purnima), and February 26, Maha Shivaratri.

A stampede injured 30 women. Uttar Pradesh CM urged devotees to take dips safely at designated ghats.
</excerpt>

A woman undergoing cancer treatment took a dip in the Ganga river during Mauni Amavasya, hoping the spiritual occasion would aid her recovery. Nirmala, who is battling metastatic cancer, traveled to the Maha Kumbh fair grounds in a wheelchair, despite ongoing chemotherapy treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. She has been undergoing treatment for two years, but her condition remains unchanged. Her husband has said, “The doctors have lost hope. Whatever happens is the will of God. Maybe she will be healed,” as the couple clung to hope.

The couple visited Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj with their son and saw a stampede that injured 30 women. Nirmala said that people were breaking through barricades and falling. The stampede took place on Mauni Amavasya during the early morning hours, leaving many women injured. Due to this, the holy dip was delayed by Akharas.

About 30 women were reported injured when barricades broke nearly a kilometre away from the Sangam during the ‘Amrit Snan’. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath appealed to the pilgrims to desist from overcrowding by asking people to take the dip in their nearest ghats. “All ghats hold equal spiritual significance and reaching the main confluence point should not be a priority,” he said. The officials ensured that multiple ghats were identified for the immersion, thus ruling out overcrowding and maintaining the sanctity of the festival.

By 8 am, over 2.78 crore people had immersed themselves in the holy waters, meaning almost 19.94 crore pilgrims since January 13. Rare celestial alignment, ‘Triveni Yog, underlines the importance of Mauni Amavasya, for an estimated 10 crore devotees for the occasion. The Maha Kumbh, that started on January 13, will end on February 26.

</excerpt>

A tragic stampede at the Sangam during the Maha Kumbh on Wednesday has left several feared dead and many injured. The incident occurred as a massive crowd gathered for the sacred Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya, a significant ritual in the Maha Kumbh that attracts millions of pilgrims. This year, the event held even greater spiritual significance due to the rare ‘Triveni Yog’ celestial alignment, occurring after 144 years.

Eyewitnesses Describe the Chaos

Vivek Mishra, a witness, described how confusion and poor crowd management contributed to the disaster. He stated that many devotees were unaware of where to go after taking the holy dip, and concealed dustbins caused people to trip and fall. “I fell when my feet got stuck in one of the dustbins. I lost my shoes and was left barefoot, injuring my feet. I somehow got up and helped my parents and another woman who were also lying on the ground. Then, panic set in, and people started pushing, triggering the stampede,” Mishra recounted.

Another witness, Ram Singh from Fatehpur, claimed that the blocked exit route worsened the situation. “The path was completely jammed. We were trapped as more people kept coming in, unable to move forward or backward. Many fell, causing a chain reaction,” he explained.

Similarly, Baljeet Singh from Balia narrated how the swelling crowd turned into chaos. “There were 14 of us, but in the rush, we lost sight of each other. People were coming and going from the bathing area, and suddenly, there was a crush of bodies all around us.”

Death Toll and Official Response

Though official confirmation is pending, sources indicate that at least 15 bodies have been brought to a hospital. Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the casualties. The stampede, which occurred around 2:30 AM, is being attributed to mismanagement, a lack of proper crowd control measures, and obstructions in the exit routes.

As investigations continue, questions are being raised about safety arrangements for the millions of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

This visit is notably meaningful as it marked the first time Shah was accompanied by his son Jay Shah’s son, giving ample expression to the beauty of generational connect at the sacred event in Maha Kumbh.

His son, Jay Shah, who is the current chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), became a father at the end of last year. Jay Shah also has two daughters.

Shah’s Kumbh Journey

This is the second instance where Amit Shah has been photographed with his grandson. The first was when this year’s Makar Sankranti arrived, and Shah visited Ahmedabad. He performed prayers at Jagannath Temple and even went on to do a ritual with Jay Shah’s son. He also said a few words to his son, an incident that got many talking.

Notably, Shah said he has immersed himself in the Kumbh nine times before. This year marks his 10th time for him to do the sacred ritual and cements him into the Kumbh event. His constant participation in the Kumbh symbolizes his allegiance to the practices of Sanatan Dharma.

</excerpt>

The Naga Sadhus, revered Shaivite ascetics, follow a life deeply rooted in mantras, scriptures, weapons, sacrifice, and renunciation. Their unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva and their path of renunciation set them apart as spiritual warriors who believe in detachment from worldly existence. The ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj has witnessed thousands of these ascetics undergoing the rigorous process of initiation into the Naga sect. On Sunday, the Sri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara, the oldest and largest order of Naga Sadhus, welcomed new initiates under the guidance of Acharya Swami Avdheshanand Giri.

The Journey to Becoming a Naga Sadhu

Becoming a Naga Sadhu signifies a complete departure from worldly attachments. It represents the highest form of renunciation, marked by the ritual of Pind Daan, where the initiate symbolically offers homage to their ancestors and themselves, signifying their departure from material life. Typically, family members perform Pind Daan for the deceased, but for Naga Sadhus, performing it for themselves and their seven generations symbolizes their commitment to absolute detachment.

Acharya Peeth of the Shripanchadashnam Juna Akhara expressed on social media that “Sanyas means renouncing all desires to become one with the elements – fire, air, water, and light.” Every aspect of a Sadhu’s life revolves around spiritual discipline and service to society.

Rigorous Initiation Process

The initiation process into the Naga order is an arduous journey of self-discipline and renunciation. The process begins with a 48-hour initiation period, during which aspirants undergo various spiritual rituals such as:

Tonsure and sacred thread ceremonies on the banks of the Ganga

The symbolic Pind Daan performed at the Sangam Ghat

108 sacred dips in the Ganga

Fasting without food and water for 24 hours under the Akhara’s religious flag

The concluding Vijaya Havan ritual before final initiation

A Life of Tough Renunciation for Society’s Welfare

Despite renouncing worldly ties, the Naga Sadhus dedicate their lives to serving society through their penance and spiritual practices. Their existence is a testament to India’s rich Vedic traditions and cultural heritage.

The Path of Spiritual Transformation

Before one can become a Naga Sadhu, they must pass through various tests and demonstrate unwavering determination. The Akhara conducts a thorough investigation into the aspirant’s background, family, and character. Only those who persist despite discouragement are considered for initiation.

The final transformation includes:

Mahapurush Stage: The initiate renounces their name, identity, and family.

Avdhoot Stage: They undergo rigorous spiritual practices and rituals.

Digambar Stage: The final stage where they take the sacred bath in the Ganga, symbolizing rebirth as a Naga Sadhu.

During the initiation, all body hair is shaved off, and they are given sacred items such as the trident, rudraksha, and sacred thread. A significant ritual, the Tangtod Sanskar, involves a painful process of cutting a genital vein to achieve celibacy.

Liberation from Worldly Attachments

The path of a Naga Sadhu is one of complete liberation from worldly bondage. Through their spiritual journey, they seek self-realization and enlightenment under the guidance of their Guru. Every moment of their existence is dedicated to spiritual discipline and the greater good of society.

As the Maha Kumbh continues, thousands of dedicated seekers are embracing the rigorous life of a Naga Sadhu, marking a new chapter in their spiritual journey.

With the potential of 400 million pilgrims, AI-driven systems are helping to predict and manage crowd densities, preventing deadly stampedes that have plagued past festivals.
</excerpt>

This religious congregation Maha Kumbh Mela is employing high-end technology such as Artificial Intelligence in organizing to better their crowd management eliminate deadly stampede occurrences and make it convenient. Authorities who govern this show will end its duration, taking its normal course as predicting crowd sizes during such festivals ensures its success concerning safe delivery.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, a spiritual event held every few years, has attracted an astounding number of pilgrims over the centuries. This year, organizers predict that up to 400 million pilgrims will visit the festival, which runs for six weeks. Devotees travel from across India to Prayagraj, located at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, to take part in ritual bathing and spiritual practices.

The sheer scale of the gathering has made crowd management a critical concern. Historically, stampedes at Maha Kumbh Mela have resulted in catastrophic losses. In 1954, more than 400 people were killed in a single day of the festival, and in 2013, 36 lives were lost in a crowd crush. The massive scale of the festival has left authorities grappling with the safety of so many attendees.

AI: A Game-Changer for Crowd Control

To address these issues, the authorities have turned to AI-powered solutions. Amit Kumar, a senior police officer overseeing technology operations for the festival, emphasized the significance of AI in managing the crowd. “AI helps us avoid reaching that critical mass in sensitive places,” Kumar told AFP. With the technology, organizers can better predict when and where crowd densities could become dangerous, taking preventive measures before stampedes occur.

This year, more than 300 cameras installed in the festival area and along roads leading to the festival have been fitted with an AI system. These cameras, including overhead drones, capture live footage of crowd movements, and authorities can keep track of the pilgrims’ flow and density. The algorithms from the system calculate crowd estimates based on this data, which are cross-checked with other information from railways and bus operators for accuracy.

Preventing Danger with Real-Time Alerts

The AI-powered system continuously monitors the crowds and issues warnings if it detects that sections of the crowd are becoming too dense. The system calculates crowd densities based on various inputs, such as camera footage, location data, and crowd movement patterns. If a particular area reaches a threshold that could pose a safety risk, an alert is triggered, allowing authorities to respond swiftly and manage the situation before it escalates.

The system even uses unconventional methods to estimate crowd size when the view from the cameras is obstructed. For instance, when full-body images are not visible, authorities estimate crowd density by counting heads or torsos. This creative approach allows for effective monitoring even in areas with high congestion.

Technological Integration: A Balance of Faith and Modernity

While the use of technology at the Maha Kumbh Mela is a new approach, it is grounded in the longstanding traditions of the festival. The event holds deep spiritual significance for millions of Hindus who come to the festival to cleanse themselves in the holy rivers. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has highlighted the festival’s blend of tradition and modernity, describing it as “at the confluence of faith and modernity.”

The integration of AI and other technologies into the Maha Kumbh Mela has been met with enthusiasm from pilgrims. Harshit Joshi, a 28-year-old automotive engineer who attended the festival, expressed relief at the safety measures in place. “The fact that there are cameras and drones makes us feel safe,” Joshi said.

Ensuring a Safe Experience for All

Although some degree of crowd density is inevitable at an event of this scale, the AI systems are helping minimize the risk of stampedes, making the festival safer for attendees. The advanced technology is designed not only to prevent danger but also to ensure that the spiritual experience remains uninterrupted. With AI actively managing crowd safety, organizers aim to send every pilgrim home fulfilled and safe after completing their sacred rituals.

As the Maha Kumbh Mela continues, the implementation of AI and modern crowd management techniques marks a significant shift in ensuring the safety of millions of pilgrims. With technology playing a central role, festival organizers are taking crucial steps toward preventing future crowd-related disasters and ensuring the well-being of attendees.

The facilities are fully equipped to handle health emergencies, ensuring the safety of pilgrims during the religious event.
</excerpt>

As millions of pilgrims arrive in Prayagraj to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela, Indian Railways has also increased its preparations to ensure health and safety among the devotees. With lakhs of devotees thronging the holy city for this once-in-twelve-years affair, the railway authorities have set up well-equipped medical centers at all key stations, such as Prayagraj Junction, to provide instant medical care.

Medical Support Facilities at Prayagraj Junction

As a measure to cater to the huge influx of visitors, Indian Railways has established an observation room at the entry gate toward platform number 3 of Prayagraj station. Indian Railways has strategically positioned the facility to provide instant medical support in case of health issues or accidents. The facility is well-furnished with basic medical appliances such as Electrocardiogram machines for heart problems, defibrillators for cardiac arrest, oxygen concentrators for respiratory emergencies, and glucometers for diabetic patients.

“We have everything ready here,” said a pharmacist stationed at the facility. “Our nursing staff is available around the clock, offering immediate care. In case of severe emergencies, we promptly transfer patients to nearby hospitals through ambulances.”

Prompt Medical Attention At the Mela

The medical teams of railways have already seen many pilgrims. One case was that of a woman, who felt giddy while moving to Ganga for a religious bath. Her family member, Naveen thanked the railway people for their instant response: “We were heading to the Ganga for a bath when her health deteriorated. We’re grateful for the prompt and excellent care provided by the railway staff.”

24 x 7 Medical Care in Maha Kumbh Mela

Indian Railways is gearing up as part of a massive effort to ensure 24×7 medicare during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Most of the devotees, going to the festival, converge at a particular point-the railway station. As many as 7 crore devotees have already bathed at Triveni Sangam and the number is bound to cross 50 crore by the time the festival will conclude on February 26.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the grandest spiritual assemblies where devotees gather to perform a ritual bath in the sacred water confluence at Ganga-Yamuna. Indian Railways makes sure the pilgrims while enjoying this event, enjoy it safely through access to all critical care measures.

Indian Railways plays a key role in providing medical support by absorbing an overwhelming population of pilgrims visiting the sacred site. Hence, the increase in medical amenities at Prayagraj Junction has been much testimony to their concern for taking care of so many millions over the sacred religious gathering going on.

</excerpt>

One of the rarest, exceptional Maha Kumbh Mela is set to take off on 13th, January and ends on 26th, February with Maha Shivaratri amounting to 44 days in Prayagraj of Uttar Pradesh. It takes place once for every 144 years, and is ordained by a rare alignment of four planets.
As Maha Kumbh Mela is a massive religious and cultural event that draws millions of pilgrims, requiring extensive use of technology to ensure smooth operations. Some of the key technologies are typically deployed during the Holy program.

For communication and updates, Maha Kumbh Mela Mobile App 2025 launched to provide pilgrims with program updates, navigation, event schedules, and emergency contacts. UP Police has already launched Maha Kumbh Police App to strengthen security. Police personnel also started Digital lost and found centers. As millions of pilgrims expected to attend, extensive data is needed to analyse carefully for crowd management. AI enabled solutions are being used to improve inter agency coordination, detect potential threats promptly, and generate actionable intelligence for security.

The UP government started a website Portal and Centralized platforms for real-time updates, registration, and event information for the pilgrims. Free public Wi-Fi services by various telecom companies also help visitors stay connected and access information. To cater the massive demand, 78 cell towers on wheels and 150 outdoor small cell towers have been deployed to ensure smooth communication in crowded zones.

The Park+ app for smart parking systems, it manages parking lots with real-time occupancy data and navigation tools such as digital maps and location-based services guide pilgrims to key areas like ghats, tents, and temples. GPS Tracking has been used for real-time tracking of vehicles, security personnel, and key resources. To manage the crowd, AI and Big Data technologies have been used to analyze crowd density and predict movement patterns to prevent overcrowding.

To ensure the safety of pilgrims Aerial surveillance drones have been installed. Drones will monitor crowds and ensure safety. To ensure Public Safety and Security, the State government has deployed 2751 CCTV Cameras across the Triveni Sangam including 328 AI enabled cameras and monitored by control room 24/7.
Due to the aging or some other issues, some of the devotees may not participate in Maha Kumbh Mela in person. For them Broadcasts enable global participation through live streaming.

As we all know, Social media platforms became part of our life. Many Social Me dia accounts have been created, to give updates, public announcements, and promote awareness.

Global warming is a concern for many environmentalists due to pollution. </excerpt>

For the past four decades, Dinesh Swaroop Brahmachari, widely known as ‘Chai Wala Baba’ in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, has been offering free guidance to aspiring civil servants. What sets him apart is his unique vow of silence and abstention from solid food, surviving solely on 10 cups of tea each day. Brahmachari, a former tea seller turned ascetic, has become a beacon of support for students preparing for the civil services exams.

His teachings, however, transcend the traditional classroom setting. Through WhatsApp, Baba shares study materials, answers students’ queries, and offers motivational support, all at no cost to the learners.

Despite his vow of silence, communication with Baba remains seamless. Rajesh Singh, a civil service aspirant who has been under Baba’s guidance for years, explained that Baba uses written messages and gestures to impart his wisdom. Singh mentioned, “We don’t believe that the written medium is the best, but it serves its purpose.” The reasoning behind Baba’s silence is tied to his belief in conserving energy, which he uses to assist others. Baba’s dedication to helping civil service aspirants succeed in their educational journeys continues to inspire many.

Currently attending the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Brahmachari remains steadfast in his mission to support aspiring civil servants.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, will take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26. Pilgrims from around the globe gather at the Triveni Sangam for a holy dip to purify their souls. The Kumbh Mela’s origins are based on the Hindu myth of Samudra Manthan, where Lord Vishnu, in the form of Mohini, protected the nectar of immortality, which eventually spilled over four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. These sites have become sacred, attracting millions of pilgrims, and Brahmachari’s presence at this significant event emphasizes his commitment to spirituality and education.

Speaking about the operation, the NDRF DIG highlighted the team’s preparedness for various emergencies, including nighttime rescues. “NDRF is fully prepared for Kumbh. You have seen this one small demonstration we put in front of you. This was a demonstration regarding what kind of challenges can we face in relation to the water emergency and how to deal with them, in which to save the drowning people,” he told ANI.

Detailing their capabilities, he emphasized the availability of trained personnel and special equipment, including underwater torches, speed boats, and skilled divers. “The demo that was held today was about water emergency.
“We have special divers around us, we have a skilled swimmer. We have a speed boat. And we are ready for how to tackle this challenge not only in the day but also in the night. We have an underwater torch. You will see on the boats that we have turned on different types of LED lights, which will help the sailors who are our divers in the dark,” he added.
