Only two out of 20 vehicles reached a wedding venue, highlighting the city’s worsening road conditions.
</excerpt>

With thousands of devotees flocking to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, roads leading to the holy city are witnessing severe congestion. The heavy traffic is not only affecting pilgrims but also causing major inconvenience to local commuters. Many travelers are experiencing long delays, with some reaching their destinations hours later than expected.

Wedding Procession Stuck in Traffic Gridlock

In a recent incident, journalist Rajesh Sahu reported that a wedding procession traveling to Prayagraj got stuck in a massive traffic jam. Out of 20 vehicles in the convoy, only two managed to make it to the venue, raising concerns about the fate of the wedding ceremony. It remains unclear whether the bride and groom were among those who made it through or if they were stranded in the congestion.

Highlighting the traffic chaos, Sahu shared his observations on social media, stating, “In Prayagraj, for those whose wedding is in the city, 20 vehicles set out for the procession, but only two reached the guest house while the remaining 18 got stuck in the jam.” He further added that many guests are reaching as late as 2 AM due to extreme congestion.

Social Media Reacts: ‘Shaadi Postponed?’

As news of the traffic crisis spread online, netizens speculated whether weddings were being delayed due to the gridlock. Joking about the situation, one user commented, “The procession is arriving without a band and horse, or in some cases, even getting postponed!”

Unprecedented Traffic Jams Leading to Chaos

Traffic congestion in and around Prayagraj has been an ongoing issue since the start of the religious gathering. Reports of jams extending up to 300 km have surfaced, with drone visuals capturing long vehicle queues stretching nearly 60 km in neighboring Madhya Pradesh.

With lakhs of devotees expected in the coming weeks, authorities are under pressure to ease traffic flow and ensure smoother movement for both pilgrims and residents.

</excerpt>

It was an early morning unlike any other, as I embarked on a small boat at 6:30 AM from Sangam Ghat. The mist over the water lifted slowly, unveiling the serene confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. As the boat gently glided through the still waters, the golden sunlight filtered through the fog, creating a tranquil glow. Birds skimmed the water’s surface with fearless grace, their wings leaving ripples that danced in harmony with the paddles. This peaceful 15-minute ride to the Triveni Sangam was not just a journey across a river but a voyage inward, to a space of profound serenity.

The atmosphere of the Maha Kumbh Mela is a sensory symphony. The crisp morning air carried a mix of scents—the earthiness of the river, the fragrance of incense, and the sweetness of camphor. Closing my eyes, I absorbed the rhythm of life around me: the chants of pilgrims mingling with birdsong and the soft splash of oars. This harmonious blend stirred something deep within me, a spiritual spark that seemed to bridge the finite with the infinite. Despite the sheer number of people, the energy was uplifting, and I felt simultaneously elevated and humbled, a part of something vast yet intimately personal.

As I approached the sacred Sangam, the act of taking a dip in the confluence felt like a sacred embrace. The water, surprisingly comfortable, held me as though it were divine hands offering solace and blessings. Each immersion felt like a shedding of worries, a symbolic release of burdens into the vastness of the universe. Performing the milk and water abhishek and offering prayers brought a deep sense of gratitude. Despite the enormity of the gathering, it felt as though the divine was personally acknowledging my presence, seeing me, and affirming my journey.

The decision to travel to Prayagraj for this experience was made on a whim, and yet, it felt predestined. And I’m deeply grateful to Lamya & Tasneem Rassiwala for making it happen for me at the very last moment.

The challenges people warned me about—crowds, chaos, and the unpredictability of such a massive event—never daunted me. It was as if an invisible force was calling me, guiding me to this moment. Being at the Kumbh Mela reminded me that growth often comes in the most unexpected ways. It taught me that the noise of the world cannot drown out a true calling and that a leap of faith is sometimes all it takes to find clarity and connection.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is more than a gathering; it is a confluence of renewal, connection, and devotion. The rivers themselves, more than physical entities, serve as conduits for purification, their sacred waters believed to wash away lifetimes of karma. This once-in-144-years event, the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela, held an unparalleled energy. Surrounded by millions of pilgrims, ascetics, and seekers, I felt the ancient spiritual vibrations uniting everyone, transcending time and space. The shared faith and devotion created a powerful sense of belonging, a collective awakening.

What makes Kumbh Mela truly extraordinary is the dissolution of worldly distinctions. Here, caste, creed, and status hold no meaning. The sacred act of immersing in the river becomes a profound surrender—an act of letting go of the ego and embracing the infinite. It is a place where chaos transforms into harmony, where the mundane becomes sacred, and where the ordinary meets the divine.

As I reflect on this experience, I am filled with gratitude for the lessons it imparted. The Maha Kumbh Mela was a reminder that life’s impermanence is not a source of fear but a call to devotion, renewal, and hope. It ignited my soul, leaving me with a deeper connection to the divine, to humanity, and to myself. The sacred Sangam, where rivers and faith converge, remains a living testament to the power of spirituality to transform, unite, and elevate us all.

</excerpt>

Devotees from all over the world have congregated here at Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, one of the world’s most spectacular spiritual events. This large festival is held once in 12 years, which attracts millions of pilgrims to the site of the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers seeking moksha and purification from sins. The Mela began on January 13 and will go on till February 26.

A devotee from Austria shared her deep spiritual connection to the festival, saying, “I feel so blessed and honored to be here, to share this moment of pure consciousness with all these people here. It’s just amazing, and I feel so light inside. The vibration here makes us enter higher frequencies. It’s really beautiful.”

Commenting on the event’s organization, she added, “The organisation is actually really good. It’s overwhelming since there’s so many people and still it is so peaceful. The crowd is super huge but the feeling of being here is very good. I feel shanti. I respect all the cultures and religions that every religion has their own language and right to exist in a way, as long as we see the essence of the human being and respect the essence of every single person.”

Another German devotee spoke about the emotional experience saying, “I don’t like it (Maha Kumbh) because I love it. I feel very special and honoured to be here because this is a very special place and a special occasion. I feel blessed. I took a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya. I call myself a Hindu – I believe it is connected to the spiritual world, to ancient wisdom, and also to collective consciousness.”

As the Mela continues, devotees are going to take part in all key spiritual rituals and celebrations that include Basant Panchami on February 3, Maghi Purnima on February 12, and Maha Shivaratri on February 26.

</excerpt>

More than five million pilgrims visited the Maha Kumbh Mela on Sunday, marking the seventh day of the grand event as the celebrations continued.

By 6 PM, over 5.182 million devotees had gathered at the Sangam Triveni, including one million Kalpvasis and 4.182 million pilgrims who took a holy dip. As of January 18, the Maha Kumbh 2025 has seen more than 77.2 million pilgrims perform the sacred ritual at the Sangam Triveni.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an aerial survey of the Maha Kumbh and visited the Paramarth Niketan Kumbh Mela Camp to attend a ‘Katha’ by Indian spiritual leader Morari Bapu. He was welcomed by Swami Chidanand Saraswati, the spiritual head of Parmarth Niketan Ashram.

“Crores of people are visiting Prayagraj daily just to take a holy dip. Amazingly, 10 lakh people are taking a dip within an hour. The kind of crowd management, event management and safety done here by Yogi ji is amazing,” Saraswati had said earlier, speaking to ANI.

The Chief Minister also met a women’s delegation from Italy, led by Mahi Guruji, founder and trainer of the Meditation and Yoga Center in Italy. The group, who had returned from Prayagraj Maha Kumbh, performed Ramayana, Shiv Tandava, and several bhajans for CM Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma also participated in the festivities by taking a holy dip at Sangam and offering prayers. He visited the reclining Hanuman Ji Maharaj temple for darshan and performed prayers for the well-being of the people.

Taking to X, Sharma shared, “I had the unique privilege of taking a holy dip of faith at the sacred Triveni Sangam in the grand confluence of faith, devotion and unity ‘Mahakumbh-2025’ in Prayagraj. Thereafter, after having the divine darshan of reclining Hanuman Ji Maharaj and worshipping him with full rites, prayers were offered for the happiness, prosperity, auspiciousness and healthy life of all the people of the state.”

In an unexpected incident, a fire broke out at the Gita Press camp in the Mela due to the explosion of three cooking gas cylinders. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to CM Yogi Adityanath to inquire about the situation. Uttar Pradesh Minister AK Sharma stated, “Almost 100 people were there in the shivir but with the blessings of Ma Ganga there has been no causality.”

Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Vivek Chaturvedi confirmed that around 70 to 80 huts and 8 to 10 tents were destroyed in the fire. “Unfortunately, a fire broke out at the Gita Press camp. It is reported that around 70 to 80 huts and eight to 10 tents have been burnt. There are no reports of any casualties. Everyone has been rescued safely. The fire has been extinguished,” he said to ANI.

NDRF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) MK Sharma stated that four teams of the National Disaster Response Force worked together to bring the fire under control.

</excerpt>

The Maha Kumbh, a grand spiritual gathering, began on Monday in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, drawing millions of saints, seers, devotees, and pilgrims. The city buzzed with activity as people from diverse backgrounds arrived to take a holy dip and immerse themselves in the festivities.

However, amid the spiritual fervor, a political controversy erupted when Samajwadi Party leaders installed a statue of the party’s late founder, Mulayam Singh Yadav, within the fairgrounds.

The move faced strong opposition from prominent seers and religious leaders, who criticized the inclusion of a political figure’s statue at a sacred event.

Here’s a closer look at the controversy as it unfolds.

Mulayam Singh Yadav’s statue installed

The sculpture, standing approximately two to three feet tall, was unveiled on January 13 at the Sector 16 campsite set up by the Mulayam Singh Yadav Smriti Seva Sansthan, an organization committed to preserving the late leader’s legacy.

The statue was inaugurated by Mata Prasad Pandey, Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, who described it as a heartfelt tribute to “Netaji” (a term of endearment for Mulayam Singh Yadav) and his enduring influence.

“He was our leader, and the camp was organised to spread his thoughts and ideas,” Pandey told PTI.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, who passed away in October 2022, remains an iconic figure in Uttar Pradesh politics. Over a political career spanning more than five decades, he served as a three-time Chief Minister and a former Defence Minister, representing constituencies like Mainpuri and Azamgarh as both an MLA and MP.

Explaining the camp’s purpose, Pandey added, “Pilgrims and other people are welcome to go to the camp, have food, and stay there.” He further clarified that the statue was installed “[symbolically]” to honor Yadav’s memory and would later be moved to the Samajwadi Party office after the Maha Kumbh Mela.

However, the statue’s installation drew criticism from the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, the apex body of Hindu religious leaders, who disapproved of its presence at the religious event.

‘Anti-Sanatani’

Mahant Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, strongly condemned the installation of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s statue, accusing the late leader of being consistently “anti-Hindu” and “anti-Sanatan.”

He argued that the statue serves as a painful reminder for religious leaders of incidents where, under Yadav’s leadership, members of their community were allegedly “killed.”

“We have no objection to Mulayam Singh Yadav’s statue. He was our Chief Minister, and no one can deny his political significance. But what message are they trying to convey by installing this statue now?” Puri questioned.

He added, “Everyone knows about his contribution or lack thereof to the Ram temple movement. He has always been perceived as anti-Hindu, anti-Sanatan, and favouring Muslims.”

Juna Akhara’s Mahamandaleshwar Yati Narsinghanand supported Puri’s remarks, echoing the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad’s criticism of the statue’s presence. Both leaders expressed that installing the statue at an event as sacred as the Kumbh Mela, a significant Hindu religious gathering, was an insult to their beliefs.

First Day of Maha Kumbh Mela 2025: 1.5 crore took holy dip

The 45-day Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 commenced early Monday, drawing an estimated 1.5 crore (15 million) devotees who braved the biting cold to take a sacred dip at the Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati—in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Under tight security arrangements, crowds flocked to the Triveni Sangam to perform the holy ritual, which is believed to cleanse sins and bring them closer to moksha (spiritual liberation).

Among the throngs of worshippers, the Naga Sadhus stood out with their striking presence. These ascetics, with ash-smeared bodies, dreadlocked hair, and minimal clothing—adorned only with beads, garlands, and often smoking wooden pipes—captivated visitors from around the globe.

The spiritual fervor of the Maha Kumbh united people from across India and the world, all bound by their shared faith and devotion.

Over the next 45 days, the festival is expected to attract more than 40 crore (400 million) visitors, including international pilgrims. Adding to the significance of the event, seers have pointed out that the celestial alignments occurring during this year’s Kumbh Mela are happening for the first time in 144 years, making it an especially auspicious occasion for the faithful.

Swami Kailashanand Giri Ji Maharaj of Niranjani Akhara revealed that she developed an allergy on her hand, likely due to the crowded environment at the event.

“She is staying in my camp and is unaccustomed to such crowded places. Despite the allergy, she remains deeply interested in our traditions,” Giri Ji said. Laurene was previously reported to observe Kalpvas, a spiritual practice emphasizing self-purification and devotion, as part of her 17-day stay.

Spiritual Journey in India

She was given the Hindu name “Kamala” by Swami Kailashanand Giri as a symbol of her spiritual engagement. While offering prayers from outside the sanctum sanctorum, she respected temple traditions that restrict non-Hindus from touching the Shivling.

“She is like a daughter to me. She participated in the rituals and was given prasad and a garland. However, we maintain the age-old tradition that non-Hindus cannot touch the Shivling,” said Swami Kailashanand Giri.

</excerpt>

With just one week remaining until the Maha Kumbh Mela, thousands of devotees, sadhus, and saints from India and around the world have started arriving in Prayagraj. This grand spiritual event has already seen the arrival of Naga sadhus, who are drawing attention with their unique attire and rigorous Hatha yoga practices.

Naga Sadhu Pramod Giri Maharaj’s Remarkable Ritual

Among the Naga sadhus, Pramod Giri Maharaj has become the subject of widespread discussion due to his extraordinary daily ritual. Each morning at 4:00 AM, despite the frigid temperatures, he bathes with 61 pots of cold water while most people prefer to stay indoors. Following the cold bath, he applies ash to his body and sits by a sacred fire for meditation. What’s unique about his practice is that the number of pots used increases each day.

A Selfless Practice for Humanity

Speaking with ANI, Naga Sadhu Pramod Giri Maharaj, from Atal Akhara, explained that his practice is done for the welfare of humanity and society, with no selfish intentions. “We undertake this practice for the welfare of humanity and society, with no selfish motive behind it,” he said. “With a mala in one hand and a bhala in the other, we are ready to stand for Sanatan Dharma whenever necessary. This is my ninth year of performing this Hatha Yoga practice, and as long as the grace of Guru Maharaj is with us, we will continue doing it.”

A Tradition Passed Down Through Generations

Pramod Giri Maharaj added that performing tapasya, or intense spiritual practices, has been the Naga sanyasi’s tradition for ages. “We are naga sanyasi, and performing tapasya has been our purpose for ages,” he said. “Our gurus have followed this path, and we are continuing this tradition.”

The ritual typically lasts for 41 days, but due to time and space limitations at the Maha Kumbh Mela, it has been shortened to 21 days. Pramod Giri Maharaj shared that the ritual started with water from 51 pots on the first day and will continue to increase by a few pots each day. “Today, there were 61 pots. When the 21 days are complete, we will perform the ritual bath with water from 108 pots,” he said.

The First Shahi Snan on January 14

On January 14, the Naga sadhus will perform their first Shahi Snan, which will be the most challenging part of the ritual for Pramod Giri Maharaj. “On that day, this ritual will be the most challenging for me, as I will perform this ritual here first and then proceed for the Shahi Snan,” he explained. After bathing, the sadhus apply ash to their bodies while still wet, and it remains on them throughout the day.

Maha Kumbh Mela Begins on January 13

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which takes place every 12 years, will begin on January 13 and conclude on February 26. More than 45 crore devotees are expected to attend the event. During the Mela, people will gather at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, to take a holy dip, believed to cleanse sins and grant moksha (liberation).

</excerpt>

The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, will take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26, 2025. This festival draws millions of devotees, who participate in ritual bathing at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, seeking spiritual purification.

Key Dates for Kumbh Mela 2025

The festival lasts between 30 to 45 days and includes several significant bathing dates, known as Shahi Snan, considered especially auspicious for spiritual cleansing. The key dates are:

January 13, 2025: Paush Purnima

January 14, 2025: Makar Sankranti (First Shahi Snan)

January 29, 2025: Mauni Amavasya (Second Shahi Snan)

February 3, 2025: Basant Panchami (Third Shahi Snan)

February 4, 2025: Achla Saptami

February 12, 2025: Maghi Purnima

February 26, 2025: Maha Shivratri (Final Snan)

Prayagraj: The Sacred Location of Kumbh Mela

Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is situated at the Triveni Sangam, the meeting point of three sacred rivers: the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. These rivers hold immense religious significance—Ganges is revered as the mother goddess, Yamuna symbolizes devotion, and Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge. The spiritual energy of this confluence forms the foundation for the Kumbh Mela, attracting millions of pilgrims seeking purification.

Historical and Cultural Significance of Prayagraj

Mythological Origins of Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela traces its origins to the Hindu mythology of Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean). According to the myth, the gods (devas) and anti-gods (asuras) churned the ocean to obtain amrita—the nectar of immortality. It is believed that drops of this nectar fell at four sacred locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain, marking these places as important pilgrimage sites.

Religious Importance

Prayagraj holds immense religious significance and is often called Tirth Raj or the ‘King of Pilgrimage Sites.’ It is believed that Lord Brahma performed the first Yajna (sacrificial ritual) here. The city is frequently mentioned in ancient texts such as the Mahabharata and various Puranas, underlining its importance as a sacred region.

In addition to its religious significance, Prayagraj has been a hub of culture and education for centuries. Renowned poets and saints like Tulsidas and Kabir have deep roots in this city. Prayagraj has also been a center for political movements, including during the Mauryan Empire. The city has contributed significantly to the arts, particularly through events like the Kumbh Mela, which have showcased traditional performances and cultural expressions.
