British Airways Dreamliner To Chennai Returns To Heathrow Mid-Flight Over Technical Issue

A British Airways plane heading to Chennai had to make an in-flight U-turn on Sunday after it reportedly experienced a technical problem. The plane, which was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, returned safely to London’s Heathrow Airport, and all passengers and crew got off without any problems, the airline confirmed in a short statement.

Although British Airways did not reveal the precise nature of the technical issue nor the number of passengers on board, it characterized the return as a “standard precaution.” The airline also did not specify how long the plane had been in the air before deciding to return.

According to flight tracking website Flightradar24.com, British Airways flight BA35 was originally scheduled to depart Heathrow at 12:40 pm but eventually took off at 1:16 pm after a delay of over 35 minutes. The aircraft remained airborne for nearly two hours and was seen flying in multiple holding patterns before safely landing back at Heathrow.

Our crew are doing their best to return their travels to some kind of normality as quickly as possible,” the airline posted in an updated statement, without commenting on rebooking or alternative arrangements.

In another but identical incident on Sunday, Lufthansa flight LH752, crewed by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, made an unexpected diversion to Frankfurt soon after takeoff. The flight scheduled to Hyderabad took off from Frankfurt at 2:29 pm, nine minutes behind its planned departure of 1:05 pm. The cause of the air turnback is unknown for now.

The two incidents have contributed to increasing criticism of the safety and reliability of the fleet of Boeing Dreamliners.

Air India Tragedy: Parents’ Surprise Visit to Daughter Ends in Tragedy

What was supposed to be a celebratory moment became a loss beyond imagination for 21-year-old Dhavni Patel, a United Kingdom student. Her parents and her aunt, who had planned to reach London ahead of time on a surprise visit to her before she attended the convocation ceremony, were among the casualties of the Air India plane crash that took place shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on Thursday.

According to a report by NDTV, Dhavni’s parents: Rajnikant Patel and Divyaben Rajnikant along with her maternal aunt Hemangi Ben, had departed from Vasad in Gujarat en route to London. The family had initially planned to fly on June 17 but decided to advance their travel to spend more time with Dhavni and make her graduation day even more special.

Yet, disaster happened just minutes into the flight. The Air India 787-8 Dreamliner, traveling to London, crashed into a hostel for doctors in close proximity to Meghani Nagar in Ahmedabad. Rather than being reunited with her loved ones, Dhavni was told the horrific news that they were among the more than 250 individuals whose lives were cut short in the accident. Solely one person survived.

Crash Details and Investigation

Air India officially stated that Flight AI-171 carried 242 people, comprising 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese, one Canadian citizen, and 12 crew members. The flight crashed soon after taking off from the airport, causing devastation and sorrow in its wake. The only survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British-Indian national, is receiving treatment at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inspected the site of the crash on Friday and subsequently saw the survivor in hospital. The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, also visited the site and made announcements regarding the process of identification, stating, “The forensic laboratories have been instructed to finish the DNA analysis in the minimum time possible.”

Government Sets Up Investigation Panel

Following the tragedy, the central government has set up a high-level, multi-disciplinary panel to probe the cause of the crash. The panel will minutely review contributing factors to the tragedy, assess existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and suggest enhanced safety procedures to prevent such tragedies in the future, according to an order from the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The committee will also be given access to all the important evidence, such as the black box data of the aircraft, air traffic control records, maintenance records, and eyewitness accounts. The authorities have given the final report a three-month time limit for submission.

Who is Jack the Ripper? Identity Revealed After 140 Years

Jack the Ripper, the notorious serial killer who terrorized Victorian London’s East End during the late 1800s, has remained unidentified for more than a century. English historian and author Russell Edwards now says he has cracked the case, identifying the killer as 23-year-old Polish immigrant Aaron Kosminski. The revelation came after DNA analysis was performed on a shawl left at the site of one of the murders.

Speaking to Today in Australia in an interview, Edwards explained when he established that the killer had been identified, “When we matched the blood DNA on the shawl to a direct descendant female of the victim, that was the singular most amazing experience of my life at the time.” Edwards added, “We did test the semen left behind on the shawl.”. When we compared that, I was amazed that we actually had found out who Jack the Ripper really was.

The killings, from 1888 to 1891, claimed the lives of five women, all but one of whom were prostitutes. Historians opine that there may have been some other victims. Mary Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly, those five women, were murdered horribly, and three of them had their internal organs removed.

The shawl, which was found at the murder site of Eddowes, Edwards bought in 2007 when he heard of it. Edwards recalled the experience, “It was a journey of discovery, with lots of twists and turns. The adventure was exciting from start to finish and I was fortunate to be able to do it.”

Kosminski, who immigrated to England as a child, was a barber in Whitechapel. In 1885, he started developing signs of mental illness and was admitted to a number of insane asylums. Edwards mentioned that Kosminski had auditory hallucinations, was fearful of others, and even refused to eat or bathe. Kosminski passed away in 1919 at the age of 53.

We’ve got the evidence, now we want this inquest to formally identify the murderer,” Edwards said.

This news has not been without controversy, however, with some questioning Edwards’ findings, including a claim of a staged discovery pertaining to the Moors Murders case. This controversy sparked a renewed police search for the body of Keith Bennett, one of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley’s victims, whose body has never been discovered.

Racial Abuse on UK Train: Drunk Passenger Tells Indian-Origin Woman, “We Conquered India”

A racially abusive incident transpired on a train between London and Manchester when an Indian-origin woman was the victim of a vile xenophobic attack. The victim, Gabrielle Forsyth, aged 26, was abused by a foul racist diatribe at the hands of a supposedly drunk man, according to Metro.

The ordeal began on Sunday when Forsyth was heading home. She engaged in a friendly conversation with another passenger, mentioning her work with a charity supporting immigrants. However, another man, who was drinking from a can, overheard their discussion and became aggressive.

A now-deleted video captured the man’s racist outburst, where he loudly proclaimed England’s colonial past and berated non-white passengers.

“You’re in England, you are claiming something. You would not be in England if you weren’t claiming something. English people conquered the world and gave it back to you. We conquered India, we didn’t want it, we gave it back to you,” he could be heard saying in the video.

The man went on a rant, screaming obscenities at the other passengers and spewing xenophobic insults. Towards the end of the video, he uttered a chilling remark. “A lot of countries like that. Sorry about your f***ing sovereignty or whatever it is you are. Record me cause I’m recording you,” he further said.

Forsyth Reacts to the Horrifying Racial Abuse

Describing the incident, Forsyth called the man’s behavior aggressive and unjustified.

“He heard the word immigrant, and his bodily response was that of anger and aggression. It was very jarring. I feel very strongly what he said was wrong. It was an insane situation. I videoed myself for protection. We were all visibly non-white.,” she explained.

Following the posting of the video on the internet, Forsyth was subjected to a torrent of online abuse.

“The amount of abuse I have received from this one video is insane. I have been called slurs I did not even know existed. Now, it is much easier to be a troll on X. Violent rhetoric and hate speech can proliferate on this app. This is a part of my identity I am proud to have. I care very much about the proliferation of rights for people of colour in this country, and I do think we are backsliding,” she said.

Despite the backlash, she is adamant in her stand. “Being Indian, being the daughter of an immigrant, and being in touch with my history and heritage is a blessing and a gift, and I am grateful every day to have the ability to stand up for myself and people of colour. I back myself and us all to the hilt.”

Forsyth has filed the incident with the British Transport Police (BTP), who are currently investigating the case.

This horrifying episode follows hard on the heels of another racial abuse inflamed altercation aboard an Avanti West Coast train, where an NHS dentist was instructed by a female commuter to “go back to your own country.”

And they act like they don’t know each other, and they act like … it’s no big deal and they just forgot their trousers.”

The first event saw seven men boarding a train at consecutive stops without trousers, pretending not to notice one another. By 2008, the event had gone global, with 900 participants in New York and nine other cities, including Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, and Toronto.

London police conducted controlled detonations on Wednesday, January 8, after a suspicious vehicle was seen in Regent Street, one of the city’s most populous shopping districts. The area became temporarily evacuated, roads around Regent Street and New Burlington Street closed as police accessed the vehicle for inspection.

The Metropolitan Police stated the blasts were precautionary and around 2:30 p.m. the police reported the case to be not suspicious. Police have informed people that the parked car is non-threatening and at no point had suggested the attack had anything to do with terror.

Counter-terrorism sources reported that there was no indication of any threat at first, and police later said that the area was secured and the situation was dealt with. Footage from social media shows police officers cordoning off the area, diverting pedestrians, and securing the scene. Witnesses say they heard a loud “boom” during the controlled detonations.

The police assured the public that everything was under control, and the situation was brought to a resolution with no further worries.

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the legal age of consent is 18, and the girl’s mother reported the incident to local authorities.

On Saturday, campaigners marched through Westminster, carrying a banner that read “Bring Marcus home” as they made their way from Parliament Square to Downing Street.

The BBC reported that campaigners have claimed Marcus Fakana is being held in solitary confinement and has been cut off from any telephone access. The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office stated that it is providing support to the British man in the UAE.

Fakana had been on bail since his arrest in September, staying in temporary accommodation in Dubai. He voluntarily surrendered to UAE authorities on December 30.

In a statement, Fakana expressed his gratitude to his supporters, saying: “Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my fight. It’s been a long fight, but nothing is hard with my lord and saviour Jesus Christ guiding me. I’m grateful for all the people who helped by donating to me and my family of faith for supporting me.”

There is hope that Fakana may receive a pardon from Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.

Fakana’s family and supporters have called for the intervention of Foreign Secretary David Lammy. A fundraiser created to cover Fakana’s and his family’s legal costs has surpassed £50,000.

Radha Stirling, from the charity Detained in Dubai, previously told the BBC that Fakana’s sentence was “unfathomable.” She stated: “It does not warrant a year in jail, doesn’t warrant tearing this family apart and ruining this young 18-year-old’s life.

“I’m confident that, on appeal, the custodial sentence will be overturned and he will be allowed to return home. The question is, how long is that going to take and how much effort is that going to take, whether that’s British intervention or the public support in telling Dubai this is unacceptable?”

Faisal Patel, originally from Navsari, has been accused of both physical and mental abuse against his wife. The Lalgate police have filed charges against Patel under Sections 498A, 323, and 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with pertinent sections of The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.

The victim, who had previously been married to a man from Navsari in 2006 and had three children with him, divorced in 2018. She later married Faisal Patel, a resident of Dabhel village in Navsari, in February 2020, according to their community’s customs. However, their marriage took a troubling turn when Patel began withholding financial support and subjected her to physical abuse over minor issues, including cooking.

Patel frequently traveled to London due to his UK visa, where he reportedly maintained relationships with other women and had a separate family. When the victim confronted him about his activities, Patel allegedly sent her a video in April, where he pronounced “triple talaq.” Following the receipt of the video, she observed the mandatory ‘iddat’ period of three months. Upon its conclusion, she reported the matter to the Lalgate police station on September 3, leading to the registration of a formal FIR on September 7.
