</excerpt>

Rahul Gandhi faces tough challenge selecting new Lok Sabha deputy leader of opposition amid internal party factionalism.

NEW DELHI: For Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, organisational decisions pose a major challenge—and the selection of a new deputy leader within the Lok Sabha is one of the biggest. Gandhi has recently appointed the current Deputy Leader, Gaurav Gogoi, as the President of Assam Congress, effectively projecting him as the party’s Chief Ministerial face in the state. This means the Congress now needs a new deputy leader in the House who can not only manage the floor effectively but also speak fluent Hindi.
Among the strong contenders, names like Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari emerge. However, both have appeared close to the Modi government following Operation Sindoor, having taken a stance that differed from the Congress party line by openly supporting the government. Their roles will be closely watched during the upcoming Monsoon Session.
Another possible candidate is Kumari Selja—a senior and experienced leader. However, her political base is in Haryana, and she currently serves as the party’s general secretary. Gandhi is reportedly planning a major organisational shake-up in Haryana, intending to sideline factional leaders and promote fresh faces. Sources suggest that an OBC leader could be named the new state president, while a non-Jat may lead the legislative party.
The Congress in Haryana is currently divided into two factions: one led by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and the other by MPs Kumari Selja, Randeep Singh Surjewala, and Birender Singh. After three consecutive Assembly election defeats, Gandhi’s trust in senior Haryana leaders has eroded. Despite that, Selja and Surjewala continue to hold key positions as general secretaries.
Given the party’s emphasis on the “one person, one post” principle, it seems unlikely that Selja would be appointed Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha while already serving as general secretary. Similarly, appointing Gogoi to two key posts raises concerns. While exceptions have been made—Mallikarjun Kharge holds both the national president post and the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha—there have also been setbacks. In 2022, then-Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot was asked to give up his post to contest the Congress presidency under this principle. When Rajasthan MLAs revolted, the Congress lost momentum and later the state election. The party still feels the absence of strong Hindi-speaking leadership at the top.
Gandhi has often been accused of neglecting the Hindi heartland. Now, with Gaurav Gogoi expected to step away from Delhi to focus on Assam—regardless of Congress’s performance in the state—must find a Hindi-speaking leader for the crucial Deputy Leader role in Lok Sabha. One potential name is Deepender Hooda, but factionalism in Haryana makes it unlikely Gandhi would trust him for the role.
Another name doing the rounds is Manickam Tagore from Tamil Nadu. But giving the position to a South Indian leader could raise questions, as the Congress president, the general secretary (organisation), and even Gandhi himself is from the South. Moreover, Tagore is considered part of Gandhi’s inner circle and lacks the strong presence needed to counter top BJP leaders on the floor of the House.
Congress needs a deputy leader who can take on senior government ministers with authority and substance in Hindi. It remains to be seen whether Gandhi will retain Gogoi or opt for a new face during the Monsoon Session.
Organisationally, Gandhi is already under pressure. In Gujarat, the much-hyped announcement of 40 new district presidents failed to yield results. Congress lost both bypolls, with AAP winning one seat. Following this defeat, state president Shaktisinh Gohil resigned, and Shailesh Parmar was appointed in his place.
In Punjab, Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the West Ludhiana bypoll, prompting half a dozen state leaders to resign. However, Punjab state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has refused to step down. Both Warring and the Leader of the Legislative Party, Partap Singh Bajwa, are close to Gandhi. But both are Sikh Jat leaders and have failed to corner the Bhagwant Mann government. Congress believes at least one of them must be replaced ahead of the 2027 elections.
Punjab Congress remains deeply factionalised. Navjot Singh Sidhu has distanced himself from active politics, while former CM Charanjit Singh Channi and party general secretary Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa lead rival camps—both eyeing the CM face tag.
Gandhi is facing similar decision-making challenges in other key states like Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi. Factionalism, leadership gaps, and a lack of strong Hindi-speaking voices in Parliament remain persistent hurdles for him and the Congress party.

</excerpt>

Congress begins major internal overhaul in 2025 to empower grassroots leaders and enforce internal democracy.

NEW DELHI: With the Congress dedicating 2025 to organisational restructuring as it prepares to take on the BJP’s juggernaut, the grand old party is planning a massive overhaul of its internal setup, reflecting Rahul Gandhi’s vision to empower grassroots leaders and build a future-ready leadership. The restructuring process involves feedback from over 1,000 party workers and leaders for the selection of district presidents.

Gandhi, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has recently toured the country extensively to address long-standing issues that have hindered the party’s electoral performance. A source closely involved in the organisational reshuffle said these long-awaited reforms will significantly strengthen democracy within the party. He explained that Gandhi is committed to implementing his long-pending goal of fostering internal democracy in the Congress by identifying underperforming and compromised leaders and workers.

During his recent visits to states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana, the former Congress chief reportedly made several remarks alluding to inefficiencies within the organisation—without naming individuals. Gandhi launched the ‘Sangathan Srijan’ initiative earlier this year from Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state. The process of new appointments there is nearly complete. While in Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi famously described three types of political actors: racehorses, marriage horses, and crippled horses—an allegory for evaluating leadership potential.

The source said that Gandhi is personally overseeing the work assigned to observers, who have been tasked with identifying new grassroots leaders. Through ‘Sangathan Srijan’, Gandhi has also reportedly gained deeper insight into the systemic rot that has plagued the Congress organisation for decades. Observers have been instructed to propose at least three names per district for the role of district president. They are meeting with party leaders on an Assembly-wise basis to shortlist potential candidates. With Gandhi directly monitoring the process, the observers are working intensively to complete the organisational overhaul through a bottom-up, democratic framework—from the booth level to the state level. The party is gathering input from more than 150 individuals per Assembly constituency for both block-level and district-level appointments.

Once compiled, these reports will be submitted to the party high command. Although the new mechanism for appointing local chiefs is timeconsuming, the source asserted that it would yield long-term benefits. The reforms aim to enforce greater accountability and responsibility, with oversight from both the party’s central control room in Delhi and its state-level offices. Explaining the shift in approach, the source noted that previously, appointments were typically finalised by the state unit chief, the CLP leader, and five to six other senior leaders. In contrast, the new process incorporates feedback from 900 to 1,000 people, thereby gauging a candidate’s broader acceptability within the district.

Observers from Haryana and Madhya Pradesh are expected to submit their reports to the party leadership by June 30, after which discussions with state leaders will be held before final appointments are made. Ultimately, the success of Gandhi’s vision for internal party democracy will be tested in the upcoming Assembly and local elections in these states.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill has cleared both Houses of Parliament after extensive debates in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha this week. Once President Droupadi Murmu gives her assent, the bill will become law, marking a significant overhaul of the Waqf Act.

Legal expert and advocate-on-record in the Supreme Court, Fuzail Ahmad Ayyubi, who had also presented his views before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), clarified the timeline and implications of the new legislation. “From that date, the statute stands amended, and it becomes the law of the land,” Ayyubi said, referring to the notification that will be issued post-presidential approval.

Key Changes and What Comes Next

Ayyubi noted that several amendments — such as the removal of the Waqf Board’s power to determine Waqf property — will be implemented immediately. Others, like the process for inquiries led by district collectors, will require new rules and guidelines. “The survey is now in the hands of the collector, and rules will be needed to outline how inquiries will be conducted,” he said.

Additionally, the government will need to define the role and responsibilities of designated officers handling government properties. “The specifics of who this officer will be, their tenure, and their jurisdiction will be outlined in the rules,” Ayyubi explained.

He also emphasized the importance of procedural clarity, saying, “Some amendments will only require procedural tweaks.”

Timeline for Rule Formation

According to an official from the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, which is responsible for drafting the rules, the process will begin immediately after the President’s assent. “We are hopeful that the publishing of the rules will not take much time, as the ministry is clear regarding the bill and the amendments,” said the official on condition of anonymity.

As per procedure, rules must be published within six months of the law being enacted. Some rules may require public consultation, with a mandatory 30-day window for public feedback. If there is significant public response, the publication timeline may stretch up to six months. However, rules not needing consultation must still be notified within the same period.

Legislative Procedure Post-Enactment

Former Lok Sabha Secretary General PDT Achary explained the post-enactment process: “Once the rules are formulated, they come into effect and are also laid on the table of both the houses. The members have the right to suggest amendments to these rules.”

Achary also highlighted the flexibility in public consultation, saying, “It’s not compulsory for the government to do so and especially in the case of Waqf wherein the bill was sent to a JPC for consultation, govt might opt to not carry any further consultations.”

He further noted that some governments proactively draft rules before a bill is even passed. “In a few cases, the government makes the rules before the bill has even been tabled or passed in the Parliament, so that as soon as it’s passed, the rules can be notified,” he said.

With the President’s assent and subsequent rule-making, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is set to bring substantial administrative and procedural changes to how Waqf properties are governed across the country.

</excerpt>

First of all, a very happy new year. Politically speaking, 2025 is going to begin on a highly charged note with the Delhi elections. Although Delhi is not a full state and sends only 7 MPs to the Lok Sabha, it is the capital and in terms of optics it sends a powerful message as to who controls the city. Which is why we have seen the never ending turf war between the BJP via the Lt Governor’s office and the ruling Aam Admi Party. For the sitting chief minister this is also a crucial election, as apart from Punjab (which is fast spiralling out of control), Delhi is the only win that he has to boast about. And Delhi is really where the Aam Admi Party’s journey began. For the BJP, this is a win that has always eluded Prime Minister Modi for it has never won Delhi after Modi took office. In other words, apart from Mamata Bannerjee, the Delhi CM remains one who has successfully warded off the Modi juggernaut. On a personal note, he would like to win Delhi for the BJP. In fact, going into the new year with less than two months left for the polls the BJP is still to announce a CM candidate. Which means this could well end up being a high stakes battle between Brand Modi and Kejriwal. As for the Congress, it is still to put its house in order and so far the only role it will play will be that of a spoiler – will it eat into the BJP’s vote or the AAP’s.

The other election due in 2025 is that of Bihar. There the alliances are already in place, with the BJP aligning with the JD(U) and the Congress with Laloo Yadav’s party. It would be interesting to see if Tejashwi Yadav can mount a comprehensive challenge to the NDA. As far as the NDA is concerned, then the dynamics between JD(U) and the BJP would be interesting. Will this be Nitish Kumar’s last election for his popularity is on a decline?
Apart from the elections, there is also the budget that will be the first challenge of the year. The economy still remains Modi’s biggest challenge. Will he continue to make the middle class pay for his welfarism or will he finally offer some cheer to the salaried professional, the trader and the entrepreneur ?

A marker of Modi’s hold over the BJP would be the election/selection of the new BJP chief as JP Nadda’s term ends in January (end). Will he be able to appoint a person of his choice, or will the RSS hold sway. If you recall in the last few state elections, specially Haryana and Maharashtra it was the RSS that did the bulk of campaigning. It is also the RSS that has taken credit for the wins, leading to speculation that it had begun to assert itself within the BJP.
As for Rahul Gandhi, the year 2024 had ended on a mixed note as the Congress could not maintain the Lok Sabha momentum in the assembly polls that followed. He still remains the Congress party’s tallest leader but there are others within the INDIA bloc that have begun to question his credibility to lead. As the only pan India party within the opposition the Congress still holds the dominant position. But while it may take the lead in parliament, it will not be able to assert itself in the regional polls. Kejriwal has refused to ally with the Congress in Delhi and Tejashwi Yadav is also not willing to cede too many seats to the Congress in Bihar.

Given that the INDIA bloc was formed for the Lok Sabha, it may survive these regional contradictions. But if it has to give a comprehensive challenge to the BJP in the next elections, now is the time to get its act together and come up with a common minimum program as well as a convenor. No use leaving these issues for the last minute.
This in a nutshell is a brief To-Do list for 2025.

‘One Nation One Election’ Bill Will Be Sent To JPC For Detailed Discussion

<excerpt>“Congress MP Manish Tewari argued, ‘Federalism and democracy are basic structure doctrines, making this bill beyond legislative competence.'”
</excerpt>

The members of Lok Sabha on Tuesday voted on the ‘One Nation One Election’ bill or simultaneous elections to both Lok Sabha and state assemblies which was introduced. This bill requires amendment of the Constitution’s (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024′ and ‘The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024’. The bill will be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed discussions.

On Tuesday, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha announced the result of the vote on the introduction of the bill in the house. The vote showed 269 members in favour (Ayes) and 196 against (Noes). This followed Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal’s formal introduction of the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, on ‘One Nation, One Election’ and his agreement to sending the bill to a JPC in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Amit Shah said, “When the One Nation, One Election Bill was taken up in the cabinet for approval, PM Modi had said that it should be sent to the JPC for detailed discussion. If the Law Minister is willing to send the bill to JPC, the discussion on its introduction can end.”

Meghwal also introduced a bill to amend the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, as per the day’s schedule. These amendments aim to align assembly elections in Delhi, Jammu Kashmir, and Puducherry with the proposed simultaneous elections.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Manish Tewari opposed the move, arguing, “Beyond the seventh schedule of the Constitution is the basic structure doctrine, which spells out that there are certain features of the Constitution beyond the amending power of the House. The essential features are federalism and the structure of our democracy. Therefore, the bills moved by the Minister of Law and Justice are an absolute assault on the basic structure of the Constitution and are beyond the legislative competence of the House.”

DMK MP TR Baalu opposed the bill, stating, “I oppose the 129th Constitution Amendment Bill, 2024. As my leader M.K. Stalin has said, it is anti-federal. The electors have the right to elect the government for five years, and this right cannot be curtailed with simultaneous elections.”

Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav, echoing sentiments expressed by other I.N.D.I.A. bloc members, said, “I am standing to oppose the 129th Amendment Act of the Constitution. I cannot understand how, just two days ago, no stone was left unturned to uphold the glorious tradition of saving the Constitution. Within two days, this Constitution Amendment Bill has been brought to undermine the basic spirit and structure of the Constitution. I agree with Manish Tewari, and on behalf of my party and my leader Akhilesh Yadav, I have no hesitation in saying that there was no one more learned than the makers of our Constitution at that time. Even in this House, there is no one more learned. I have no hesitation in saying this.”

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said, “This proposed bill hits the basic structure of the Constitution itself and if any bill affects the basic structure of the Constitution, it is ultra vires. We must remember that the state government and the state legislative assembly are not subordinate to the central government or to Parliament. This Parliament has the power to legislate law under the Seventh Schedule, List One and List Three. Similarly, the state assembly has the power to legislate law under the Seventh Schedule, List Two and also List Three. Therefore, by this process, the autonomy of the state legislative assembly is being taken away.”

This bill aims to implement the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which seeks to synchronize national elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

In addition to the main bill, Meghwal also proposed amendments to the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. These amendments are intended to align assembly elections in Delhi, Jammu Kashmir, and Puducherry with the proposed simultaneous elections.

Opposition Voices Concerns Over Constitutional Integrity

Congress MP Manish Tewari voiced strong opposition to the bill, arguing that it undermines the Constitution’s basic structure. He stated, “The essential features are federalism and the structure of our democracy. Therefore, the bills moved by the Minister of Law and Justice are an absolute assault on the basic structure of the Constitution.”

Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav echoed Tewari’s sentiments, expressing confusion over the government’s sudden push for the amendment just days after upholding constitutional values. He emphasized the wisdom of the Constitution’s framers and criticized the bill as a threat to its foundational principles.

Cabinet’s Recommendations and Opposition’s Reactions

In September, the Union Cabinet approved recommendations from a High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee proposed implementing simultaneous polls in two phases, with local body elections to follow within 100 days of general elections. It also recommended a common electoral roll for all elections.

However, opposition leaders, including those from Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), have expressed vehement opposition to the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh labeled the bill unconstitutional and a threat to democracy, asserting that it aims to undermine accountability in governance. He further claimed that the bill is part of a broader agenda to replace India’s Constitution.

NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to discuss the bill, emphasizing the need for thorough deliberation. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari criticized the government’s approach, suggesting that an all-party meeting would have been more appropriate for discussing such significant constitutional changes.

Congress MP K Suresh reiterated the party’s strong opposition, stating that the bill threatens India’s democracy and federal structure. He predicted that while NDA allies like TDP and JD(U) may not openly oppose the bill, they are likely against it.

Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav also condemned the bill, asserting that it contradicts various sections of the Constitution. Earlier in the day, Tewari submitted a formal notice to oppose the introduction of the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, citing serious concerns regarding constitutionalism and legality.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reiterated the government’s determination to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the country, asserting that his administration is working with “full force” towards establishing a “Secular Civil Code.”

Participating in a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the ‘Glorious Journey of 75 Years of the Constitution of India,’ PM Modi highlighted that the idea of a Uniform Civil Code was considered by the Constituent Assembly.

“There was a long discussion there. After the debate, it was decided that it would be better if the government that gets elected takes a decision on this and implements UCC in the country… The Supreme Court has also said many times that UCC should be brought into the country… Keeping in mind the spirit of the Constitution and the makers of the Constitution, we are working with full force for a Secular Civil Code,” PM Modi stated.

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to criticize the Congress party over the abrogation of Article 370 and the imposition of Article 35-A in Jammu and Kashmir, which his government revoked in August 2019.

“Everyone knows about 370 but very few know about 35-A… If there is any first son of the Constitution of India, then it is the Parliament but they have strangled it too. They imposed 35-A on the country without bringing it to the Parliament… This work was done on the orders of the President and the Parliament of the country was kept in the dark,” he remarked.

PM Modi further accused the Congress of undermining democracy during the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government in 1975.

“It is 75 years of the Constitution. But 25 years also has an importance, so do 50 years and 60 years…When the country was witnessing 25 years of Constitution, at the same time Constitution in our country was razed. Emergency was imposed, democratic systems were finished, the country was turned into a prison, citizens’ rights were looted, and press freedom was curtailed. This sin on the forehead of Congress can never be erased. Whenever democracy will be discussed across the world, Congress’ sin will never be erased because democracy was strangled,” he said.

Referring to the Nehru-Gandhi family, PM Modi alleged that it had consistently challenged the Constitution.

“Highs and lows occurred, there were difficulties too, there were obstacles as well. But I bow before the people of the country once again that they strongly stood with the Constitution…I do not want to make personal criticism on anyone but it is important to place facts before the country. That is why, I would like to do that,” he said.
“One family of Congress left no stone unturned in hurling a blow to the Constitution. I am mentioning that one family because in 75 years of our journey, they ruled for 55 years. So, the country has the right to know what happened. The tradition of this family’s ill-thoughts, bad policies is ongoing continuously. This family has challenged the Constitution at all levels,” he added.

The special two-day debate in the Lok Sabha on 75 years of the Constitution concluded on Saturday, with the Rajya Sabha set to take up the discussion next week.

The query sought details regarding the number of Indian nationals recruited to serve in the Russian Army, their repatriation status, and the reasons for any delays in their release despite assurances from Russian authorities. </excerpt>

In her maiden speech in the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spearheaded the opposition’s response to the government’s policies, addressing pressing issues such as the Unnao rape case and the recent violence in Sambhal. Her speech, delivered on the first day of a significant parliamentary debate, was met with a mix of cheers and jeers from the assembly.

Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks came as a direct rebuttal to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s opening statements. She shared poignant stories from the families affected by the Sambhal violence, particularly focusing on two young boys, Adnan and Uzair, who lost their father, a tailor, to police gunfire.

“A few days ago, some people from the bereaved families of Sambhal came to meet us… there were two children among them – Adnan and Uzair. One was my son’s age (Raihan Vadra is 24) and the other was around 17. Their father was a tailor who had one dream… to see his sons educated,” she recounted.

Gandhi continued, “The police shot their father dead… Adnan told me he would grow up to be a doctor and realise his father’s dream… a dream instilled in him by the Constitution of India.”

Importance of the Constitution in Empowering Citizens

In her speech, she emphasized the importance of the Constitution in empowering citizens to seek justice and voice their concerns against the government. “Our Independence struggle was a unique one in the world as it was based on truth, non-violence,” she stated.

</excerpt>

The Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 2 pm on Wednesday following a ruckus initiated by the opposition, who demanded a discussion on the deteriorating situation in Manipur. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi highlighted the suffering of the people in Manipur, stating that basic services are on the verge of collapse and the impact on ordinary citizens is devastating.

Gogoi questioned when Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Manipur and when Home Minister Amit Shah would inform the House about the steps being taken to address the crisis. He further alleged that the BJP was using the issue of George Soros to divert attention from the government’s failures.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal Accuses Congress of Ties to George Soros

Amid the uproar, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal asserted that the government is taking necessary actions regarding the situation in Manipur. He accused the Congress party of having a nexus with external forces, which he claimed is exacerbating the problems facing the country. Goyal specifically questioned the close relationship between Congress and George Soros, asking, “Why does George Soros have such a close relationship with their leader?”

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day amid a standoff between the BJP-led central government and the opposition over a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The house is scheduled to reconvene on December 12.

Opposition INDIA Bloc Submits No-Confidence Motion Against Rajya Sabha Chairman

The opposition INDIA bloc submitted a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to the Secretary General of the Upper House on Tuesday. The Congress party, leading the INDIA bloc, has been demanding discussions on the Adani issue and staged protests within the Parliament premises.

Congress leader Manish Tewari remarked that the opposition’s move to file a no-confidence motion against Dhankhar raises questions about his impartiality. He noted that the Vice President, who serves as the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, is elected by MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Tewari emphasized that if the opposition feels compelled to pursue an impeachment motion against Dhankhar for alleged bias, it raises broader concerns about the selection of impartial presiding officers in legislative bodies.

Parliament Faces Disruptions as Winter Session Continues

On Tuesday, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned early due to unruly scenes during proceedings, with members from both opposition and treasury benches exchanging heated remarks. The winter session of Parliament commenced on November 25 and is set to continue until December 20, but disruptions have been frequent, hindering legislative progress.

Congress leader Pawan Khera criticized the BJP, accusing them of avoiding the discussion on Gautam Adani’s indictment. He firmly stated that the opposition will continue to raise the issue because they have nothing to hide. In contrast, he claimed the BJP has “everything to hide.”

Opposition Demands Debate on Adani Issue

On Monday, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned. The BJP intensified its attack on Congress over alleged links to George Soros. Meanwhile, the opposition accused the ruling party of hindering the functioning of the House. Congress members continued to demand a discussion on the Adani issue.

Khera Questions BJP’s Ties to Soros and Minister’s Son

Khera also raised concerns about the relationship between Union Minister S. Jaishankar’s son, Dhruv Jaishankar, and the Aspen Institute in Washington. Furthermore, he challenged the BJP to explain how the children of their leaders studying abroad secure scholarships. He also asked about the involvement of BJP leaders’ children in organizations funded by Soros.

In a video posted on Monday, Khera said, “Bharatiya Janata Party thinks that George Soros’s name can trap us. It is laughable. We want to tell them that we will keep raising the Gautam Adani (indictment) matter because we have nothing to hide. But you (BJP) have everything (to hide). If you want to make George Soros an issue, you should answer from where the children of BJP leaders and ministers who are studying abroad get their scholarships. You should also tell us how many children of BJP leaders are working in places funded by Soros. Tell us about the connection of Dhruv Jaishankar, son of S Jaishankar, with Aspen Institute. What is his relation with the German Marshall Fund? What is the relationship of George Soros with these two organisations? We will end this discussion that you have started.”

BJP’s Allegations Against Congress

Khera’s comments came after BJP leader Tarun Chugh’s allegations. Chugh claimed that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were linked to the George Soros Foundation. He argued that Congress had become a tool for forces aiming to destabilize India. Additionally, he accused Sonia Gandhi of being connected to the Forum of the Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP), an organization funded by Soros. Chugh also stated that FDL-AP had expressed views suggesting that Kashmir should be treated as a separate entity.

Chugh, who is responsible for BJP activities in Jammu and Kashmir, promised to expose the Gandhi family’s “anti-national” ties. He further emphasized that no attempts to stop Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India would succeed.

Thus, both parties remain engaged in a heated exchange, with Congress demanding answers on the Adani issue, while the BJP focuses on alleged foreign ties to discredit the opposition.

Congress-led protest brought to fore the deepening fissures among opposition parties as some members from Samajwadi and Trinamool Congress were conspicuous by their absence.

This absence has highlighted the fraying within the opposition, as these parties failed to unitedly force a strategy through which they could unite under before their parliamentary approach.

Congress in Firm Stance on Question of Accountability Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury described her party’s commitment: “It is not our responsibility for the House to function as much as it is everybody’s responsibility.”. She said, “We make all efforts from our end to run the House because the public expects us to raise their voice here strongly. If the government wants to run the House, it will function. If they do not want that, then everyone knows what the conspiracy is.” Chowdhury made it clear that the onus of running the proceedings lies on those in positions of authority within the House.

Cyclone Fengal being debated in Rajya Sabha Even as the walkout continued to unfold in the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha sat discussing Cyclone Fengal, which had landed just two days ago on the Puducherry coast.
Rahul Gandhi’s Decision Paves the Way for Priyanka

The bypoll was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi, who had won from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the 2024 general elections, chose to retain Rae Bareli. Wayanad, known as a Congress bastion, saw Priyanka Gandhi emerge victorious against BJP’s Navya Haridas and CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri.

Contesting as a United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, Priyanka garnered 6,22,338 votes in Wayanad. Though her total votes were slightly lower than Rahul’s 6,47,445 in April, her victory margin of 4,10,931 votes exceeded his earlier lead of 3,64,422.

Family Legacy in Parliament

With Priyanka’s entry, all three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family are now part of India’s legislative system. This election was held following the death of sitting MP Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.

Priyanka Gandhi’s successful debut underscores Congress’s continued relevance in key constituencies and highlights her role as a pivotal player in the party’s future strategies.

He said, it is Congress which spoke against the Chinese intrusion and condemned the clean chit that was given to China.

“Anti-national work was done by the person who gave the clean chit to China. Anti-national work was not done by us which condemned the clean chit,” the Congress leader said. Rahul Gandhi during his interaction in Washington DC on being asked that what he thinks if Prime Minister Modi has managed the US-China competition and said, “Well, if you call having Chinese troops in 4,000 square kilometres of our territory handling something well, then maybe we’ve got Chinese troops occupying land the size of Delhi in Ladakh. I think that’s a disaster… “How would America react if a neighbour occupied 4000 square kilometres of your territory? Would any president be able to get away with saying that he’s handled that well? So I don’t think PM Modi handled China well at all. I think there’s no reason Chinese troops should be sitting in our territory…” the LoP said.

While commenting on the Sikhs issue on which Rahul Gandhi spoke in US and triggered a controversy in India, Khera said, “There should be freedom in wearing turban. We want that only.”

Targeting the Prime Minister and the BJP, he said, “This is the same BJP where the Prime Minister says that he can recognize with their clothes. This is the same BJP which first beats people just because they are Muslim and they have and their beard.”
Citing examples, Khera said that a youth was killed in Haryana thinking he was a Muslim and then they apologised and will the country stay in such atmosphere.
“We are talking about Constitution, which gives freedom to everyone,” Khera said.

Rahul Gandhi had said: “The fight (in India) is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear a turban…whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a kada or go to the Gurudwara. That’s what the fight is about, and it’s not just for Sikhs, but for all religions.”
His comments triggered strong reactions from the BJP. Even Banned terror organisation Gurwantpant Singh Pannun also endorsed Rahul Gandhi’s remarks and dubbed it as “bold and pioneering” and also justified the demand for a separate Khalistani state.

On Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweets alleging anti reservation stand of Rahul Gandhi, Khera said: “I want to challenge Amit Shah that we are ready to increase reservation to more than 50 per cent as of now. Will they clear there stand on reservation.
Ge also commented on Pannun and said, “Give us Pegasus then we will tell who is behind him. His statements come when it suits the BJP.”

On Rahul Gandhi’s meeting Ilhan Omar, he said, “Have they ever heard about Ilham Omar before. She is a lawmaker and she met in a group with Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi met in a group and not secretly. If the BJP has any issue, then it should summon US Ambassador, Home Minister should write a letter to US State department.”

Omar was part of a group of 10 US lawmakers who met Gandhi in the US on Tuesday.
The first African refugee elected to Congress, Omar, in her earlier term as a Democrat Congresswomen in 2022, had moved an anti-India resolution, saying India was guilty of violating religious freedom. This was shortly after she went to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, a visit that India had condemned.

Khera while commenting on the fresh violence in Manipur, and said: “ The Prime Minister shouldn’t do cheap politics, he wasted 10 years. He should work, he should go to Manipur and try to wipe the tears of the people and heal there wounds.”

Many people have been injured in Manipur in the fresh violence. Even rocket launchers and drones were used in Manipur for the fresh attack.
Violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year and since then hundreds have died while many had to take refuge in the shelter camps.

</excerpt>

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured only 4 reserved assembly seats, compared to 11 seats won by the Congress.

With the assembly polls drawing near, Haryana is seeing a lot of political uproar and widened rift among the leaders ruling and opposite factions adding to the woes of their party high command. After the announcement of holding elections a little before time by the Election Commission of India (ECI), political parties are gearing up for the polls. The saffron Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) which has suffered a setback losing five Lok Sabha seats, is constantly churning out a strategy to mark third consecutive victory in the state while the Congress seems hopeful about winning the assembly election with huge a margin.

On the other hand, the parliamentary polls proved to be no less than a nightmare for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) as all failed to mark victory even on a single seat. Keeping in view the voting pattern witnessed in the recent Lok Sabha election, political parties are brainstorming over election strategy. An important aspect that was seen in the election results was that the saffron BJP had to face the ire of the SC voters due to several factors and in Haryana, the party won less than a quarter of the SC assembly seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Now it is believed that SC voters can play a decisive role in the upcoming assembly elections and the SC vote bank, which is one-fifth of the total voters, can prove to be the deciding factor this time. Apart from this, it is also pertinent to mention that out of the 4 JJP MLAs who have left the party in 24 hours in the two days recently ,Ishwar Singh, Ram Niwas Surjakheda and Anoop Dhanak hail from the SC community and apart from political ambitions, caste equations are also being considered behind these three quitting the party. It is pretty evident from the Lok Sabha election results have revealed that the regional parties

JJP and INLD are continuously are losing electoral hold among the SC voters. The Lok Sabha elections were no less than a nightmare for the both as the deposit deposits of party candidates was forfeited on all the seats. Apart from this, the situation of INLD, which is constantly fighting for its existence for last two decades , was more or less the same in the Lok Sabha elections as the party could not win any reserved assembly seat in the Lok Sabha polls.

BJP, which won 5 seats in the last assembly elections, has won only 4 assembly seats in the Lok Sabha elections, which is less than 25 percent. . Out of the total 17 SC seats , the main opposition party Congress has won 11 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Apart from this, the results were somewhat pleasing for the party when Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which contested the elections under INDI alliance with Congress, took the lead in two assembly constituencies. Out of the 17 seats reserved for SC community, Congress has won Kharkhoda, Kalanaur, Jhajjar, Bawanikheda, Uklana, Kalanwali, Mullana, Sadhaura, Ratia, Narwana and Hodal seats. BJP has won Nilokheri, Israna, Pataudi and Bawal seats, while AAP took the lead in Shahabad and Guhla Cheeka seats falling in Kurukshetra Lok Sabha.

Regional parties INLD and JJP did not win any reserved assembly seat. How much faith the SC community has shown in the BJP candidates and voted for them, can be gaudged from the statement of Union cabinet minister for state, Rao Indrajit Singh, who could win polls with a small margin and was seen saying to Dr. Banwari Lal, who belongs to the SC community and holds the portfolio of cabinet minister in the Nayab Singh Saini led-BJP Haryana government, in a program after winning the election that Dr. Saab, «You must know how many people from the SC community have voted for me as well as the party in all the Lok Sabha constituencies. In a way, he had targeted the SC community for not casting their vote for the party. In this connection, it has come to light that in view of the current political equations, the BJP is constantly brainstorming on strategies to woo the SC voters in the upcoming assembly elections.

According to the caste data based of Parivar Pehchan Patra (PPP) , there are a total of 1368365 SC families, a sizable chunk in Haryana i.e. 20.71 percent of the total families. If we talk about BC A category families, their number is 1123852 which is 16.52 percent of the total families. If we talk about BC B category families, their number is 869079 which is 12.78 percent of the total population. A total of 72 lakh families in the state applied fo PPP and Out of these, the data of 68 lakh families had been verified last year while about 2.5 lakh families are living in some other state

In the last assembly elections held in 2019 , the main opposition party Congress has won the maximum 7 seats.Balbir Valmiki from Israna in Panipat, Renubala from Sadhaura in Yamunanagar, Varun Chaudhary from Mullana in Ambala, Shakuntala Khatak from Kalanaur in Rohtak, Jaiveer Valmiki from Kharkhoda in Sonipat, Sheeshpal Keherwal from Kalanwali in Sirsa and Geeta Bhukkal from Jhajjar in Jhajjar districts are the Congress MLAs. After this, 5 MLA›s of the ruling BJP including Laxman Napa from Ratia in Fatehabad, Vishambar Valmiki from Bawanikheda in Bhiwani, Banwari Lal from Bawal in Rewari, Satyaprakash Jarawata from Pataudi in Gurugram and Jagdish Nayyar from Hodal in Faridabad contested the polls successfully. While JJP›s Anoop Dhanak from Uklana in Hisar, Ishwar Singh from Guhla Cheeka in Kaithal, Ramkaran Kala from Shahabad in Kurukshetra and Ramniwas Surjakheda from Narwana in Jind won the elections while independent candidate Dharampal Gondar managed to win from Nilokheri. If seen from this perspective, Congress has a strong hold among the SC voters and other parties will try to gain an edge here this time. There are five districts including Faridabad, Panchkula, Mahendragarh, Nuh and Charkhi Dadri districts with no SC seats.

</excerpt>

In a significant political development, National Conference (NC) President Dr. Farooq Abdullah has confirmed the formation of an alliance between his party and the Congress, covering all 90 constituencies in Jammu & Kashmir. The announcement followed a high-stakes meeting in Srinagar with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

After the meeting, Abdullah expressed optimism about the alliance’s future, stating, “The meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere. The alliance is on track and it will go on well with God’s grace. It is final, it will be approved by this evening.” Emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the agreement, he added, “This alliance has been done on all 90 seats.”

However, the announcement has drawn sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with J&K BJP President Ravinder Raina dismissing the alliance as a desperate move by the two parties. “Congress and National Conference are scared of losing in the assembly, that’s why they have joined hands for this alliance,” said Raina. He further asserted that the alliance would not change the outcome of the upcoming elections, declaring confidently, “Even this is not going to help both, as BJP is going to win and make the government in J&K.”

The NC-Congress alliance marks a strategic shift as both parties seek to consolidate their positions in the face of a resurgent BJP. The partnership, rooted in a shared vision for preserving Jammu & Kashmir’s unique identity and political autonomy, comes at a time when the region is navigating significant changes post the abrogation of Article 370.

For the Congress, this alliance with the NC is crucial for regaining its footing in the region, while for Abdullah, it represents a commitment to steering J&K through challenging times. However, Raina’s strong words underscore the fierce political battle that lies ahead, with the BJP aiming to consolidate its gains and secure a decisive victory in the upcoming assembly elections.

As political temperatures rise in Jammu & Kashmir, the NC-Congress coalition will have to counter the BJP’s narrative and mobilize effectively to achieve their electoral goals. The formalization of the alliance is expected by this evening, setting the stage for an intense electoral contest across the region.

The video of their exchange, which occurred just before the Upper House was adjourned, has since gone viral on social media, with many drawing parallels to their own experiences with demanding bosses.

The altercation occurred during a debate when the Opposition clashed with Chairman Dhankhar over remarks made by BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari about Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Tiwari’s comment that Kharge’s “entire family is in politics” led to Congress MPs requesting that the remarks be removed from the record. Amid the chaos, Bachchan addressed Dhankhar’s tone directly.

Bachchan commented, “I am an artiste. I understand body language and expressions. But your tone is not right. We are your colleagues, and your tone is unacceptable.”

In response, Dhankhar fired back, “I don’t need schooling… You may be anybody. You may be a celebrity, but you have to understand the decorum… I do not follow anyone else’s script. I have my own script. I am not operated by anyone.”

“The recent disqualification of Vinesh Phogat due to a minor weight discrepancy has devastated not only her Olympic dreams but also every Indian. It is disheartening to see the Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, use the Rs. 70.45575 lakhs spent on her as a deflection. This amount is not an asset of the BJP; Phogat is a national asset,” the Congress MP said in his letter.

Condemning Mandaviya’s statement, Tagore urged the government to address the issue with the seriousness it deserves.

“We condemn the Minister’s insensitive statement and urge the government to address this issue with the seriousness it deserves. Our athletes deserve genuine support, not mere financial figures. We call for the withdrawal of ministers’ statements and a more respectful approach to our sportspeople’s challenges,” he said.

This comes after Mandaviya in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday said that Phogat was provided with all possible financial assistance by the Indian government.

“As far as her preparations and support are concerned, the Indian government gave her all possible assistance according to her needs. She was provided with Hungary’s famous coach Woller Akos and physio Ashwini Patil who were always present with her. For the Olympics, personal assistance, including various sparring partners and strength and conditioning specialists was also provided, including her coach Woller Akos, Wayne Patrick Lombard, a strength and conditioning specialist, Ashwini Jeewan Patil, her physiotherapist, Mayank Singh Garia, a strength and conditioning specialist, Shubham and Arvind, her sparring partners. A total of Rs 70,45,775 was provided to Phogat for the Olympics,” the Sports Minister said.

Meanwhile, Harish Salve, senior Advocate, will represent the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing on Friday, regarding the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics.

Salve’s expertise will be crucial in addressing the legal and procedural aspects of the dispute.

Salve, former Solicitor General of India and King’s Counsel, confirmed to ANI that he has been engaged by the IOA to represent Phogat at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics final, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling on Thursday.

In an emotional post on X, Phogat expressed her sense of defeat and gratitude, stating, “Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness.”

</excerpt>

The BJP-led government plans to introduce the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, aiming to revise the Waqf Act of 1995. The bill intends to “effectively address issues” concerning the authority of State Waqf Boards, the registration and survey of waqf properties, and the removal of encroachments. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will present the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

The government has decided to withdraw the Waqf Properties (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Bill, 2014, which was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in February 2014 under the Congress-led UPA government. The bill, scheduled for withdrawal from the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, pertains to the eviction of unauthorised occupants from waqf properties.

In addition to introducing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, Rijiju will also present The Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024, which aims to repeal the Mussalman Wakf Act of 1923. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 proposes renaming the Waqf Act, 1995 to the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, 1995.

Key provisions of the Bill

The bill aims to define “waqf” as property held by individuals practicing Islam for at least five years and who have ownership of the property. It also seeks to ensure that establishing Waqf-alal-aulad does not exclude women from inheritance rights. Additionally, the bill proposes eliminating provisions related to “waqf by user,” transferring the responsibilities of the Survey Commissioner to the Collector or a designated officer of Deputy Collector rank for surveying waqf properties. It also calls for a more inclusive composition of the Central Waqf Council and State Waqf Boards, ensuring representation of both, Muslim women and non-Muslims.

The bill, as outlined in the statement of objects and reasons, aims to establish separate Boards of Auqaf for Boharas and Aghakhanis. It also seeks to ensure representation for Shia, Sunni, Bohra, Agakhani, and other marginalised groups within the Muslim communities. Additionally, the bill proposes streamlining waqf registration through a central portal and database and introduces a detailed process for property mutation according to revenue laws, including giving proper notice to all relevant parties before officially designating any property as waqf.

The bill aims to remove Section 40, which grants the Board the authority to determine whether a property is classified as waqf. It also proposes that mutawallis file waqf accounts with the Board via a central portal to enhance oversight of their activities. The bill includes plans to reform the Tribunal by reducing its membership to two members and allows for appeals against Tribunal decisions to be taken to the High Court within ninety days. According to sources, the Business Advisory Committee has decided that the Waqf Amendment Bill will be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. Opposition parties are advocating for the bill to be reviewed by the standing committee.

</excerpt>

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to respond to the discussion on the Finance Bill in Lok Sabha later today, likely around 4 PM. The Lok Sabha has started the discussion on the Finance Bill following the passage of the Appropriation Bill for the central government’s expenditure for 2024-25 on Monday. The completion of the budget process will occur with the passage of the Finance Bill by Parliament.

Presenting the Union Budget for 2024-25, Sitharaman set the fiscal deficit target at 4.9% of GDP, with plans to reduce it below 4.5% by 2025-26. The government has allocated a capital expenditure outlay of Rs 11.11 lakh crore for 2024-25, marking an 11.11% increase. Capital expenditure is used to establish long-term physical or fixed assets.

A key focus of the Budget is the adjustment of basic customs duty (BCD) on various products to lower the cost of commonly used items. Duties on imported gold, silver, leather goods, and seafood were reduced. The customs duties on 25 critical minerals were fully exempted, and BCD on two of them was reduced. These changes aim to support domestic manufacturing, enhance local value addition, promote export competitiveness, and simplify taxation while considering public interest.

However, there were increases in both long-term and short-term capital gains taxes, with short-term gains on “specified” financial assets now attracting a 20% tax rate and long-term gains a 12.5% rate. Exemptions on capital gains for lower and middle-income classes have been raised from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.25 lakh per year.

An amendment in the Finance Bill offers relief on capital gains tax in property transactions. Taxpayers can choose between a lower 12.5% tax without indexation or a higher 20% tax with indexation for properties acquired before July 23, 2024.

To support the startup ecosystem, Sitharaman proposed abolishing the angel tax for all classes of investors, a long-standing industry demand. This move is expected to drive more investments into startups.

Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2024 on July 23, her seventh consecutive budget, surpassing the late Morarji Desai’s record of six consecutive budgets. The interim budget on February 1 addressed financial needs until the formation of a new government after the Lok Sabha elections. The budget session of Parliament, which began on July 22, will conclude on August 12.

Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran projected India to remain the fastest-growing major economy in 2024-25, with growth estimated at 6.5-7.0% .

</excerpt>

During a heated Lok Sabha debate, Congress MP Mohammad Jawed accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of gaining power by inciting anti-Muslim, anti-Dalit, and anti-poor sentiments. He claimed that without Muslims in India, the BJP would not have achieved electoral success. The debate focused on demands for grants for the Education Ministry, with Jawed urging the government to restart schemes for minority students and criticizing what he called discriminatory policies.

Key Accusations and Appeals

Muslim Contributions: Jawed emphasized the intelligence and contributions of Muslims to Indian society, urging the government not to discriminate against them.

Educational Policies: He called for the resumption of scholarships and support for minority students, highlighting the decline in Muslim candidates passing the UPSC exams.

Education System Criticism: Jawed accused the government of dismantling the country’s education infrastructure and pointed to issues like student suicides in Kota and the death of students in a Delhi coaching center.

BJP’s Response and Defense

In response, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya praised the Union Budget and the National Education Policy (NEP), arguing that they empower youth through education and skill development. He countered Jawed’s accusations by stating:

Budgetary Achievements: Surya highlighted the government’s achievements in education over the past decade, attributing improvements to the NEP.

Congress Criticism: He accused the Congress of failing to implement the Mandal Commission report and being anti-SC, ST, and OBC.

Mother Tongue Education: Surya praised the emphasis on providing education in regional languages, which he argued would enhance learning.

Issues Raised in the Debate

Teacher Shortage: Jawed pointed out the shortage of teachers and claimed that budget allocations for education have decreased from 3.36% of GDP under the UPA government to 2.9% currently.

Exam Integrity: He criticized the integrity of the National Testing Agency (NTA) due to frequent paper leaks, questioning the government’s competence.

Infrastructure Concerns: Jawed drew attention to infrastructure issues, citing a leaking roof in Parliament as symbolic of broader governance problems.

Conclusion

The debate in the Lok Sabha showcased sharp divisions between the Congress and BJP over issues of minority rights and education policies. While Jawed accused the BJP of discriminatory practices, Surya defended the government’s record and criticized the Congress for past failures.

</excerpt>

Senior BJP leader Satish Poonia, who is in-charge of Haryana, on Thursday challenged Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to select a common man from a backward class as Congress party’s chief ministerial candidate in Haryana.

Poonia said the BJP has taken a significant step by declaring Nayab Singh Saini, an ordinary man from the OBC (Other Backward Class) community, as its CM face. This move, Poonia said, demonstrates the BJP’s dedication to advancing individuals from marginalised communities into positions of leadership.

In an exclusive interaction with the Daily Guardian, Poonia said his challenge to Rahul Gandhi is based on in Gandhi’s emphasis on caste census and the uplift of backward classes. Poonia argued that Gandhi’s actions should reflect his rhetoric and asked whether he is prepared to make similarly bold decisions within his own party.
Poonia’s comments come amid the ongoing political debate over caste representation and broader issues of social justice and leadership in politics.
Poonia alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s strategies are not aimed at uplifting the backward classes, rather, they serve to confuse them.

Arguing that Gandhi shows no genuine concern for these communities, he said neither the Congress nor its chief ministers belong to ordinary workers. He accused Gandhi and the Opposition of misleading the public during the Lok Sabha elections with falsehoods such as ending reservations through Constitutional changes.
Poonia strongly defended the Agnipath scheme and accused the Opposition of misleading the youth with false claims. Poonia said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently advocated for Agniveer Scheme to maintain a youthful Army. He accused the Congress and the Opposition of concealing the facts about the scheme.

Poonia said there have been no change in the number of permanent recruitments in the Army. While 500 permanent positions remain unchanged, an additional 1,000 Agniveer recruits are added, resulting in a total of 1,500 soldiers being inducted, he said. This arrangement provides employment to 1,000 youth for four years. After their service, Agniveers will receive a 10% reservation in paramilitary forces, with BJP-ruled states also offering similar reservations in government jobs.

Poonia noted that Haryana has already implemented the reservation and private companies are also considering hiring Agniveers. He emphasised that the discipline and training from the Army will make Agniveers highly employable in both government and private sectors.
According to Poonia, the Agniveer scheme presents significant employment opportunities, and no Agniveer who has served four years in the Army will be left unemployed. He reassured that all details about facilities and benefits have been provided by the Army and the defense minister, urging the public not to be swayed by the Opposition’s deceptive politics.

Poonia asserted that despite Congress’s attempts, the party is unlikely to win in Haryana. He said the people of Haryana will elect the BJP to form the government for the third time with a substantial majority.
He alleged Congress has always engaged in divisive politics, and Gan

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu presented the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024, in the Lok Sabha, aiming to modernize civil aviation regulations by replacing the 90-year-old Aircraft Act.

In his address to the lower house, Naidu highlighted the need for new legislation, pointing out that the 1934 Act has undergone 21 amendments over nearly a century. The extensive amendments have led to ambiguities and confusion for stakeholders, prompting the need for a more streamlined and efficient framework.

The proposed bill seeks to address these issues by removing redundancies and simplifying the regulatory environment. It aims to enhance ease of doing business, support the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative for self-reliance, and provide a clearer framework for aircraft design, manufacturing, and maintenance. Additionally, it would grant the Central government greater authority to regulate construction activities, issue directives, detain aircraft, and enact emergency orders when necessary.

During the introduction of the bill, some opposition members raised concerns about its Hindi nomenclature, with RSP member N K Premachandran questioning the logic behind the name and expressing concerns about accessibility for people from south India. Naidu responded, noting that similar objections were addressed in previous discussions on criminal justice laws, and assured that the bill does not violate any constitutional provisions.

The new bill outlines ten primary objectives, including regulating aircraft design and manufacturing, establishing international aviation standards, and enhancing civil aviation security. However, experts have noted that the new bill does not appear significantly different from the 1934 Act, and the government has yet to clarify the specific changes made in the updated legislation.

</excerpt>

Looking at that the internal conflicts and issues brewing inside the party and foreseeing the repercussions, the BJP high command has started closely overseeing the Chief Ministers in the states the party is in power. This move is intended to address and resolve discontent among party workers and reinvigorate their efforts. In the two-day review session with Chief Ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is believed to have reprimanded some of the CMs. The most widely discussed aspect of the meeting is Modi’s display of anger. There are certain underlying reasons for the approach that has been adopted by the high command. Firstly, if a Chief Minister focuses more on personal branding than on party interests and supports people who harm the party, they should be reprimanded. The party often loses even small elections, like by-elections, in such cases.

In Uttar Pradesh, leaders were urged to unite and concentrate on by-elections. At the same time, strict orders were given to a few Chief Ministers from other states. Outside of Uttar Pradesh, no other Chief Minister can win elections on their own; the party relies mostly on Prime Minister Modi for success.

The other reason is that the results of 2024 Lok Sabha elections and by- elections were least expected and shocking. According to sources, organisational changes within the party may be on the cards. However, any decision to replace Chief Ministers in one or two states is likely to be made only after the elections in three states are completed.
In the meantime, all Chief Ministers have been instructed to concentrate on the upcoming by-elections. Key by-elections are scheduled in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan.

Another issue for the high command is the emergence of internal conflicts in several states following recent defeats. The opposition has also seized on these internal conflicts. Crucially, in some states, party leaders themselves have used their influence to undermine their own candidates. Reports of such sabotage have emerged from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Haryana. In Uttarakhand, there are specific allegations of attempts to sabotage candidates in seats like Garhwal, Tehri, and Haridwar.
In the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Modi’s popularity helped secure the seats in Uttarakhand, but losses elsewhere prevented the party from achieving a majority. As a result, the party has been holding a series of meetings, and the Sangh has also become more active.
The Prime Minister specifically addressed Chief Ministers who faced complaints about irregularities. Sources said the Centre will closely monitor these reprimanded Chief Ministers, aiming for better coordination between the organisation and the government, with a focus on prioritising party workers.

</excerpt>

On Tuesday, Kerala’s Wayanad district was hit by a series of severe landslides, resulting in the deaths of at least 45 people. The disaster struck the Meppadi region, where torrential rains triggered three consecutive landslides that ravaged Chooralmala village.

The heavy rains caused widespread destruction, washing away roads, bridges, and homes, and sending bodies floating in the rivers. Rescue efforts have been challenging, as the full extent of the damage remains unclear.

The landslides occurred between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., destroying significant portions of Chooralmala, including local shops and vehicles. Authorities have confirmed 45 fatalities, with concerns that many more may be trapped under the debris. Reports indicate that over 200 homes in Chooralmala were swept away.

Compounding the difficulties, the collapse of the bridge over the Iruvazhinji River has disrupted rescue operations in Mundakkai, as it was the only connection between Chooralmala and Mundakkai.

The situation remains critical, with minor landslides continuing in the upper hills of Wayanad. Additionally, the Chaliyar River’s water level has surged beyond the danger mark due to runoff from the Meppadi landslides.

In response, the Indian Army from Wellington, Coonoor has been deployed to assist with rescue operations and to construct a temporary bridge to reconnect Mundakkai. According to the Hume Centre for Ecology and Wildlife Biology, more than 300 mm of rainfall was recorded in parts of the Western Ghats over the past 24 hours.

In the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said, “Early this morning, Wayanad was hit by several devastating landslides. More than 70 people have been killed. Mundakkai village has been cut off, and the full extent of the loss of life and damage is still being assessed. I have spoken to the Defence Minister and the Chief Minister of Kerala. I urge the Union Government to provide all possible support for rescue and medical care, expedite compensation for the victims—possibly increasing the compensation amount—restore essential transport and communication links, set up immediate relief efforts, and develop a plan for the rehabilitation of affected families. The threat of further landslides remains in many areas of Wayanad and the Western Ghats. Our country has seen a troubling increase in landslides in recent years. It is crucial to map landslide-prone areas, implement mitigation measures, and create an action plan to address the rising frequency of natural disasters in this ecologically sensitive region.”

In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged support from the central government. Rahul Gandhi has also committed to seeking additional assistance from Union ministers.

Relief efforts are ongoing, with two Indian Air Force helicopters deployed to assist. Visuals from the scene show rescue teams working through debris and flooding, with many homes already destroyed.

Kerala, which has faced severe flooding in the past, including the devastating 2018 flood that claimed nearly 400 lives, remains highly vulnerable to such natural calamities.
