</excerpt>

As the Rajya Sabha by-election scheduled for September 3, the BJP is seeing a flurry of activities as many party leaders vie for the coveted seat that has fallen vacant after Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda won the last Lok Sabha polls. The BJP is meticulously evaluating candidates, balancing caste considerations and their potential impact on the upcoming assembly election which is likely to be held in October.
There is intense focus on choosing between a Jat and a non-Jat candidate to sway the party’s fortunes in the state assembly polls.

Among the frontrunners are prominent Jat leaders, including former ministers Captain Abhimanyu and Om Prakash Dhankhar, who had served as Haryana BJP president. Additionally, Kiran Choudhary, who recently quit Congress to join the BJP, is also in the race after failing to secure a Lok Sabha ticket for her daughter. It is learnt that the party may consider non-Jat options too. Sanjay Bhatia, a former Karnal MP and a loyalist of former chief minister Manohar Lal, is also among the top contenders. Bhatia, who had won his first Lok Sabha election in 2019, with a huge margin of over 6 lakh votes, had also sacrificed his seat after party fielded Manohar Lal from Karnal.

Earlier, Bhatia’s name was also making rounds for the state BJP president but the BJP continued with its surprise factor and appointed another Mohan Lal Badoli , who even failed to win his first Lok Sabha election from Sonepat. Additionally, Bhatia’s strong influence in Punjabi dominated Karnal and Panipat cities may help the party in assembly elections in the absence of Manohal Lal. A senior BJP leader told The Daily Guardian, “The party has already sent a Jat, Subhash Barala, to the Rajya Sabha and fielded Jat candidates in the Lok Sabha. It’s less likely they will pick another Jat for this seat.”
Congress in a Bind On the opposition front, the Congress is grappling with indecision, primarily due to a lack of numbers. Concerns about potential cross-voting and allegations regarding Kirti Choudhary’s legislative status have complicated matters.
Despite a petition challenging Choudhary’s membership under anti-defection laws, no resolution has been reached. Senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has indicated that the party lacks the necessary votes for a win in the 90-member assembly.
Congress sources reveal that the party leadership is waiting for the BJP’s candidate announcement before deciding their course of action. The ongoing exchanges between JJP and Congress leaders further add to the uncertainty, as the 88-member assembly includes 41 BJP legislators, supported by two independents and two JJP legislators with pending disqualification petitions.

The Election Commission of India has appointed IAS officer Saket Kumar as the Returning Officer for the by-election. The nomination deadline is August 21, with voting set for September 3 .

</excerpt>

Senior Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari attributed the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls to a lack of support from minorities in the state. Addressing the BJP’s state executive committee meeting, Adhikari suggested scrapping the party’s Minority Morcha and moving away from the motto ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’.

New Motto Proposed

Adhikari proposed a new motto for the party: ‘Hum unke saath jo hamare saath’ (we are with those who are with us). He emphasized that the BJP should focus on supporting those who support the party, rather than trying to win over minority communities.

Clarification of Remarks

Following backlash, Adhikari clarified his statement, insisting that his words were taken out of context. He stated that the party should support nationalist individuals who stand for the nation and Bengal. He also mentioned that the party should not divide people into majority and minority groups, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas’.

Minority Electorate in West Bengal

Minorities make up nearly 30% of the electorate in West Bengal. Adhikari’s remarks come in the context of the BJP’s slogan evolution, from ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ in 2014 to ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’ in 2019.

Accusations Against TMC

Adhikari claimed that during the recent Lok Sabha polls, Hindus were prevented from voting by “Jihadi goons of the TMC” in many areas. He asserted that free and fair elections are not possible in West Bengal without implementing the Disturbed Areas Act. He emphasized that the BJP does not seek to gain power through the President’s Rule but aims to win elections with a fair mandate.

TMC’s Victory and BJP’s Losses

The remarks from Adhikari come shortly after the BJP lost by-polls in three assembly seats, all of which were won by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC). In the recent Lok Sabha polls, TMC secured 29 seats, while the BJP won just 12 seats.

TMC’s Response

Reacting to Adhikari’s remarks, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh accused the BJP of making excuses to placate their cadre base following the Lok Sabha defeat. Ghosh suggested that the BJP’s internal strategy and leadership were the primary reasons for their poor performance, rather than external factors.

Earlier, the court had remanded the former MP to the custody of the special investigation team (SIT) until June 18. Initially, on June 10, he had been sent to 14 days of judicial custody, but today the SIT requested a body warrant against him related to a cybercrime case.

Prajwal Revanna, aged 33 and the grandson of JD(S) leader and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, recently lost his bid to retain the Hassan parliamentary constituency in the elections.

Upon returning from Germany on May 31, where he had been since April 27, the SIT officials arrested him at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. Earlier, following a request from the SIT via the Central Bureau of Investigation, Interpol had issued a ‘Blue Corner Notice’ seeking information on his whereabouts.

Revanna was arrested on April 28 in a case registered against him in Holenarasipura, Hassan district, where he was accused of sexually harassing a 47-year-old former maid. He is identified as accused number two in the case, while his father and MLA, H D Revanna, is the primary accused.

Prajwal Revanna faces charges in three cases of sexual assault, including allegations of rape. The incidents came to light when pen-drives containing explicit videos allegedly involving him were reportedly circulated in Hassan prior to the Lok Sabha polls on April 26.

</excerpt>

The Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra have seen a significant shift in the political landscape, with Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar’s factions emerging as the clear winners. The Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have allied with the Congress, and their combined strength has given them a strong lead in the state.

Thackeray and Pawar Factions Outperform Breakaway Groups

As of 2 pm, Team Thackeray is leading on 11 Maharashtra seats, while Mr Pawar’s NCP is ahead on 7 seats. In contrast, their breakaway factions, led by Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, are leading on 5 and 1 seats, respectively.

INDIA Alliance Leads in 29 Seats, BJP on 18

Overall, the INDIA alliance is ahead in 29 seats, while the BJP is leading in 18 seats. This marks a significant dent in the NDA’s performance in the state compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Maharashtra’s Political Landscape Changed Dramatically

The political landscape in Maharashtra has undergone significant changes since the 2019 polls. The BJP and Shiv Sena were in an alliance then, winning 41 out of 48 seats. The NCP won four seats, and the Congress one. However, the alliance fell apart over the Chief Minister’s post, leading to the formation of a new government with the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena.

Thackeray and Pawar’s Fights Pay Off

The fights of both leaders, Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, have paid off in the polls. Mr Thackeray’s alliance with the NCP and Congress has given him a strong foothold in the state, while Mr Pawar’s battle to maintain his party’s identity has also been successful.

Trends Indicate Boost for Maha Vikas Aghadi

The trends so far indicate a significant boost for the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which will be crucial for the state polls later this year. The alliance’s performance will give it a strong morale boost as it prepares for the upcoming elections.

Sharad Pawar Addresses Media

Addressing the media, Mr Pawar said that this election represents change in the country and Maharashtra has played a big role. “I am proud of the people of Maharashtra,” he said, adding that the INDIA alliance leaders will hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss their next steps.

Among the veterans who stepped out to exercise their franchise were Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s parents, Salim Khan and Salma Khan. </excerpt>

It is a symbol of resilience. Its political significance equally significant.

A holy city with its beautiful Golden Temple, a beacon of spirituality and architectural grandeur, to the haunting memories of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, where the struggle for independence was written in blood, Amritsar has witnessed the triumphs and tragedies that have shaped the nation’s destiny.

The origins of this storied city can be traced back to the 16th century when Guru Ramdas, the fourth Sikh Guru, constructed a sacred pool, which later gave birth to the name “Amritsar,” meaning the “pool of nectar.” Despite facing devastation at the hands of Afghan and Mughal rulers, the resilient Sikh community’s unwavering spirit and determination revived the city, transforming it into a symbol of resilience and perseverance.
With the nation already in the midst of high-stakes general elections, excitement is running high. Everyone’s waiting eagerly as the big day approaches when the people of Amritsar will cast their votes on June 1st. It’s shaping up to be a crucial moment in our democratic journey, and all eyes are on this gripping electoral showdown in Amritsar.

Amritsar’s political significance is as glorious as its historical legacy. The Lok Sabha seat for this constituency has long been a coveted prize, witnessing intense battles between political heavyweights vying for the honor of representing this pivotal region.
Since India’s independence, the Indian National Congress (INC) party has dominated the Amritsar constituency, emerging victorious 12 times out of the total elections held. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Congress leader Gurjeet Singh Aujla triumphed over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate Hardeep Singh Puri, securing an impressive 4,45,032 votes against Puri’s 3,45,406 votes. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, garnered 20,087 votes in the same election. The voter turnout stood at a respectable 56.34%, reflecting the city’s active political engagement and the electorate’s determination to make their voices heard.

However, the dynamics of Amritsar’s political landscape have undergone a significant shift in recent years, reflecting the changing tides of public sentiment and the evolving socio-political climate. Prior to 1999, Hindu candidates held sway, winning 9 out of 14 elections (including by-elections), while Sikh candidates secured victory only 5 times. But the tide has turned, with the parties increasingly preferring to field Sikh candidates, and in the five Lok Sabha elections (including by-elections) held since 1999, Sikh candidates have emerged victorious every single time.

The Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency encompasses 9 assembly segments: Ajnala, Raja Sansi, Amritsar North, Amritsar West, Amritsar Central, Amritsar East, Amritsar South, Attari, and Majitha. With a total of 860,582 registered voters, this constituency wields substantial influence in shaping the political landscape of Punjab and, by extension, the nation.

A closer examination of the statistical intricacies reveals the ebbs and flows of electoral fortunes in Amritsar. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Congress stalwart Amarinder Singh emerged victorious over the BJP’s Arun Jaitley, securing 4,82,876 votes (48% vote share) and defeating Jaitley, who garnered 3,80,106 votes (37.74% vote share), by a margin of over one lakh votes.
After Amarinder Singh’s ascension to the Chief Minister’s office in Punjab, a by-election was necessitated for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat in 2017. In this closely contested battle, Congress’ Gurjeet Singh Aujla emerged triumphant over the BJP’s Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, securing a substantial margin of 1,99,189 votes and cementing the party’s hold on the constituency.

Looking back at historical trends, the vote share in Amritsar has fluctuated between the two dominant parties, the Congress and the BJP. In 2019, the INC secured an impressive 51.78% of the vote share, while the BJP garnered 40.19%. In 2014, the INC’s vote share stood at 47.94%, while the BJP trailed closely at 37.74%. Interestingly, in 2009, the tables were turned, with the BJP leading the pack at 48.13% and the INC following closely at 47.29%, reflecting the fluid nature of Amritsar’s political landscape and the electorate’s willingness to shift allegiances based on prevailing circumstances and issues.
The voter turnout in Amritsar has also witnessed varying levels of participation over the years. In 2019, the turnout was 57.07%, while in 2014 and 2009, it stood higher at 68.18% and 65.63%, respectively. Notably, the percentage of NOTA (None of the Above) votes in the 2019 election was 1.02%, indicating a segment of voters dissatisfied with the available choices or seeking alternative options beyond the traditional political parties.
As the nation gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, scheduled for June 1st with the counting of votes on June 4th, there’s a lot of excitement in Amritsar’s political scene. The incumbent MP, Gurjeet Singh Aujla of the Congress party, is aiming for an unprecedented hat-trick, having secured consecutive victories in the 2017 by-poll and the 2019 general election. His bid for a third term will undoubtedly face fierce competition from the opposition parties.

In a bid to reclaim the prestigious Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded a formidable candidate – former diplomat and ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu. Sandhu, who retired as the Indian envoy to the US in February and joined the BJP in March, brings a wealth of experience and diplomatic clout to the political arena, adding a new dimension to the contest.
Ahead of his nomination, Sandhu had been a vocal advocate for establishing US consulates in Indian cities, playing a pivotal role in the opening of the Indian consulate in Seattle. His candidacy has undoubtedly added a new layer of intrigue to the political landscape of Amritsar, where his international experience and connections could resonate with voters seeking a broader perspective on governance.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been making significant inroads in Punjab’s political sphere, has nominated Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, the Cabinet Minister and MLA from Ajnala, as their candidate for the Amritsar seat.
Dhaliwal’s candidacy represents the party’s ambition to expand its footprint in the state and challenge the dominance of the Congress and BJP by offering a fresh alternative to the electorate.

In the past general elections in Punjab, the BJP secured 2 seats with a 9.7% vote share, while the Congress emerged as the frontrunner with 8 seats and a 40.6% vote share. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and AAP each won 1 seat, highlighting the growing political diversity in the state and the electorate’s willingness to explore new options beyond the traditional parties.
As the campaign trail heats up, the battle for Amritsar’s Lok Sabha seat promises to be a closely watched contest, with each party leaving no stone unturned to sway the electorate.
The city’s rich history and political significance ensure that the outcome will reverberate across the nation, shaping the future course of governance and representation at the highest levels.

Many important Indian politicians have represented the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency. These include well-known figures like Gurmukh Singh Musafir (Indian National Congress), Navjot Singh Sidhu (who was once with the Bharatiya Janata Party), and Amarinder Singh (Indian National Congress)

Their legacies have left an indelible mark on the city’s political tapestry, serving as a reminder of the weight and responsibility that comes with representing this influential constituency. As the candidates from various parties hit the campaign trail, the citizens of Amritsar find themselves at a crossroads, weighing the promises and visions presented by each contender. The city’s diverse electorate, comprising different communities and socio-economic strata, will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the outcome, with each segment of society bringing its unique concerns and priorities to the table.
In the midst of all the noise from rallies and speeches, it’s really important for voters to closely look at what the candidates have done before, what they plan to do, and how they want the city to grow.

Issues such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and employment will likely take center stage, as Amritsar strives to maintain its position as a thriving economic and cultural hub while addressing the pressing needs of its citizens. Voters will undoubtedly be seeking assurances and concrete plans from the candidates to tackle these fundamental concerns that directly impact their daily lives. As the sun sets on the Golden Temple, the city awaits with bated breath, eager to witness the dawn of a new political era that will shape its destiny for years to come.

The combined opinions of the people in Amritsar, heard through voting, will reverberate across the nation, influencing the delicate balance of power in the hallowed halls of Parliament.
Ultimately, the decision rests in the hands of the electorate, who will cast their votes based on a myriad of factors, including party allegiances, individual candidates’ track records, and the pressing issues that resonate most deeply with their lived experiences. It is a momentous responsibility, one that will shape not only the future of Amritsar but also the trajectory of the nation as a whole.

As the nation holds its collective breath, Amritsar stands poised to once again etch its name in the annals of India’s political history, a testament to the enduring spirit of democracy and the power of the people’s voice.

</excerpt>

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would fall short of a majority in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, opening the path for the Opposition INDIA bloc to assume power on June 4. Kejriwal, speaking from the AAP headquarters after being granted bail in an alleged liquor policy case, accused PM Modi of pursuing a ‘one nation one leader’ agenda and warned that if re-elected, top opposition leaders would be jailed.

Kejriwal stated, “In the last 20 hours since my release from jail, I have consulted with poll experts and the public, and it appears that the BJP will not form the government.” He added, “The NDA’s government will not be formed after June 4… Their seats are decreasing in Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, UP, Delhi, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. It is also speculated that they may only get 220-230 seats. The INDIA government will come to power at the center.”

The Delhi CM accused PM Modi of leaving no stone unturned to crush the Aam Aadmi Party, citing the imprisonment of four top AAP leaders. He criticized the Prime Minister’s anti-corruption stance, claiming that while PM Modi claims to fight corruption, all the alleged thieves are in his party. Kejriwal also questioned PM Modi’s commitment to fighting corruption, contrasting it with his own actions in removing and jailing corrupt ministers in his government.

Kejriwal further alleged that if the BJP wins the national elections, all opposition leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin, Uddhav Thackeray, and Tejashvi Yadav, would be imprisoned. He accused PM Modi of pursuing a ‘one nation one leader’ mission, suggesting that his government would arrest every opposition leader.

He also raised questions about the BJP’s leadership, particularly regarding PM Modi’s age. Kejriwal noted the BJP’s practice of retiring leaders above the age of 75 from political responsibilities and questioned whether PM Modi, who would turn 75 in September, would step down and hand over the reins to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In response to Kejriwal’s remarks, Amit Shah clarified that there is no such provision in the BJP’s constitution regarding the retirement of leaders at a certain age. He reaffirmed that PM Modi would complete his term and continue to lead the country, dismissing Kejriwal’s assertions.

BJP Chief JP Nadda criticized Kejriwal and the opposition, accusing them of misleading the country and seeking excuses for their anticipated failure in the elections. He reaffirmed PM Modi’s leadership and stated that there is no confusion within the BJP regarding its leadership.

Kejriwal also predicted the replacement of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath within two months following the Lok Sabha results, alleging that the top BJP leadership was sidelining veteran leaders.

Additionally, Kejriwal promised statehood status for Delhi under the INDIA bloc government, ensuring that the Lieutenant Governor would be chosen from the people of Delhi, unlike the current LG, whom he claimed hailed from Gujarat.

</excerpt>

In the past 72 years, only three women have been elected to the Lok Sabha from Himachal Pradesh, with just two in the fray this time, despite women constituting almost 49 per cent of the total voters in the state.

“Women from humble background rising high in politics and carving a niche for themselves is still a big challenge in the country and Himachal Pradesh is no exception. At present, women constitute about 49 per cent of the total voters in the state but representation is not even one fourth and this is a cause of serious concern,” said Ramesh Chauhan, head of the department of political science at Himachal Pradesh University.

“In politics, what matters is who has the decision-making power. This power is normally with men and until women are given prominent positions, they would not emerge as ’empowered’ and surpass their dominant male counterparts,” Chauhan told PTI.

According to Kamal Manohar Sharma, who also teaches political science at Himachal Pradesh University, the status of women has been high in the state and even before reservation for women was introduced, women pradhans were elected in Mandi, Kinnaur, and Kangra districts.

“But women were not so keen to climb the ladder to the assembly,” he claimed. “Moreover, the political parties also did not promote or encourage the women with humble background.”

“Political parties go all out to woo the women voters but when it comes to declaring candidates, women get few opportunities,” the political experts felt.

“To add to it, participation of women voters surpass male voters especially in rural areas but still few women get elected,” they added.

A total of 56,38,422 voters – 28,79,200 male, 27,59,187 female and 35 third gender persons – are eligible to exercise their franchise for the seats of Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, and Shimla (SC) in the seventh and last phase of polling on June 1.

Amrit Kaur, India’s first health minister who hailed from the royal family of Kapurthala, was elected to Lok Sabha from Mandi constituency in 1952. Thereafter, no woman got a ticket till 1984.

However, in 1984, Chandresh Kumari from the royal family of Jodhpur who was married in Himachal Pradesh, was fielded by the Congress from Kangra and won as the party swept the election, riding on the sympathy wave following the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Pratibha Singh, wife of former chief minister Virbhadra Singh unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls in 1998. However, she won the elections in 2004 when her husband was the chief minister.

In 2009, Virbhadra Singh was elected to Lok Sabha from Mandi but he quit after becoming chief minister in 2012 and his wife Pratibha Singh won the by-election in 2013.

She again contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 but lost to Ram Swaroop of BJP, who was re-elected in 2019. But the seat fell vacant when Ram Swaroop died in March 2021 and Pratibha Singh won for the third time in the by-election held in November 2021 after the death of Virbhadra Singh.

In 2014, the AAP fielded Kargil war hero Capt Vikram Batra’s mother Kamal Kanta Batra from Hamirpur but she polled only 15,329 votes and lost.

Even in the 68-member state assembly, the representation of women has been abysmally low and no woman was elected till 1967. Only one woman entered the assembly in 1977 and 2022. However, the highest number of seven women was elected to the state assembly in the 1998 elections.

So far, eight women have been elected to Rajya Sabha from the state.

The third phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024, slated for Tuesday, May 7, will witness polling in 93 constituencies spanning across 11 states and union territories. In the previous Lok Sabha polls of 2019, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a significant majority of these seats, including all constituencies in Gujarat, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh.

There are more than 1,300 candidates running for office, about 120 of them are women. A total of 1.85 lakh polling places staffed by 18.5 lakh officials allow 17.24 crore people, including 8.39 crore women, to exercise their right to vote.

With the BJP already clinching the Surat seat unopposed, polling will occur in various regions including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, Goa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Madhya Pradesh. Notably, voting will also take place in Betul, Madhya Pradesh, where elections were deferred.

Over 11 crore people are expected to cast their ballots in these regions.

Following the conclusion of the third phase, voting will have transpired for 283 out of 543 Lok Sabha seats. Subsequent phases are scheduled for May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1, with vote counting slated for June 4.

In this phase, several key candidates are contesting, including Union ministers Amit Shah, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Mansukh Mandaviya, Parshottam Rupala, Pralhad Joshi, SP Singh Baghel, and Dimple Yadav, as well as Congress stalwart Digvijaya Singh. Prominent constituencies include Gandhinagar, Guna, Mainpuri, Baramati, and Rajgarh.

Voting will commence at 7 am and conclude at 6 pm, with provisions for individuals already in queue at closing time to cast their votes.

Reflecting on the 2019 outcomes, the BJP emerged victorious in the majority of contested seats, with notable exceptions.

Furthermore, this phase marks the political debut of former India cricketer Yusuf Pathan, who is contesting from Baharampur.

In Baramati, often recognized as the stronghold of the ‘Pawar family,’ a notable confrontation unfolds between the incumbent three-time MP Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar, and Sunetra Pawar, wife of Ajit Pawar, who has transitioned to the BJP-led NDA and currently serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

The first two phases of the Lok Sabha polls saw a decline in voter turnout. Of the 102 seats that went to poll in the first phase on April 19, 66.14% of voters cast ballots, and 66.71% of voters cast ballots in the second phase on April 26, which included 88 seats.

However, voting for the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat in Jammu and Kashmir has been postponed to the sixth phase on May 25, originally scheduled for the third phase.

He further slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying, “The PM and BJP must learn from Sardar Parkash Singh Badal how to ensure peace and communal harmony.
At present, re-polling is underway in 11 polling stations within the Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency.

Following reports of violence at these polling stations in Manipur on April 19, the Election Commission has mandated the repolling.

Repolling is taking place at several affected polling stations, including Moirangkampu Sajeb Upper Primary School and S. Ibobi Primary School (East Wing) in the Khurai assembly constituency, four in Kshetrigao, one in Thongju, three in Uripok, and one in Konthoujam. Incidents of violence, including gunfire and destruction of EVMs, were reported at some of these polling booths in strife-torn Manipur.

Security measures have been heightened at all polling stations to prevent any untoward incidents. During the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Friday, certain miscreants reportedly fired shots and damaged EVMs at these polling stations. Manipur witnessed a voter turnout of 69.18 percent until 7 pm on April 19.

During the incidents of violence on April 19, one civilian sustained injuries from gunfire, and clashes erupted at a polling booth in Moirangkampu Sajeb Awang Leikai of Imphal, Manipur, amid the Lok Sabha elections.

The Lok Sabha elections saw participation from all 32 assembly segments of the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency and 15 assembly segments of the Outer Manipur (ST) parliamentary constituency.

Voting for the remaining 13 segments of Outer Manipur is scheduled for the second phase on April 26. The counting of votes is slated for June 4.

“These BJP people have kept saying that they will secure this many or that many seats, let me make it clear, they (BJP) won’t get more than 150 seats. Not even a single seat more than 150,” he said while addressing a public rally in Bhagalpur.

Rahul Gandhi pledged to discontinue the Agniveer scheme, arguing that India doesn’t require two categories of martyrs.

“As soon as the INDIA alliance government comes, we will end the Agniveer scheme. India does not need two types of martyrs. Everyone should get a pension,” he said.

He also pledged to introduce a minimum tax once in office.

“We will change GST. There will be one tax, the minimum tax. We will double the salary of Asha and Anganwadi workers,” he said.

He also vowed to waive farmers’ debts and ensure a guaranteed minimum support price for farmers if the INDIA alliance government is established.

“We are giving two guarantees to the farmers. The Congress party is going to waive off the farmers’ debts, and secondly, we are going to provide a guaranteed minimum support price to the farmers of India,” he said.

He also assured that his government would grant all graduates and diploma holders in India the entitlement to an apprenticeship.

He further elaborated that under the apprenticeship entitlement, every individual would be allocated a one-year apprenticeship in the public, private, and government sectors with a salary, and successful performance would lead to permanent employment opportunities.

“All the graduates and diploma holders of India, we are going to give them a right, the right to apprenticeship. The right to apprenticeship means that our next government is going to give every youth of India the right to a first job. Everyone will get an apprenticeship for one year with salary. They will receive training, and if they perform well in the first year, they will get a permanent job. These apprenticeship jobs will be available in public units, in the private sector, and in the government sector,” he said.

The first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 wrapped up on Friday across 102 parliamentary constituencies spanning 21 states and Union Territories. He highlighted elections as crucial for upholding democracy and underscored the need for fair, free, impartial, and peaceful elections, calling them a cornerstone of democratic celebration.

Saha expressed contentment with the voter turnout and praised the Election Commission for its readiness to address grievances promptly, ensuring a transparent polling process. He previously urged voters to prioritize development, peace, and unity, emphasizing the importance of supporting candidates dedicated to societal welfare.

Scheduled to campaign in Chailengta, Karamcherra, and Kamalpur on Saturday, Saha’s efforts align with the state’s festive election atmosphere. Tripura recorded the highest turnout at around 80.46%, with West Bengal following at 77.57%.

However, amidst Tripura’s high turnout, the INDIA bloc in Tripura has requested the Election Commission to cancel polls for the West Tripura Lok Sabha constituency and Ramnagar assembly constituency due to alleged poll manipulation through booth jamming, intimidation, and proxy voting.

The first phase of Lok Sabha polls occurred on April 19, with the remaining six phases scheduled on different dates until June 1 to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The election results are set to be announced on June 4.

They have opted to conduct rallies indoors, taking shelter in the cooling comfort provided by coolers and fans.

During a rally in Koratagere, Tumkur district, attendees congregated in a large hall equipped with coolers and fans to combat the sweltering heat.

“Even as South Karnataka swelters at around 40 degrees Celsius, we’ve made arrangements for water, indoor rallies, and fans to ensure the comfort of our supporters attending the rally,” Darshan a BJP leader in Kotagere, Tumkur told ANI.
He further added, “Despite the heat wave, people continue to throng to hear our tallest leader, Deve Gowda, in the election campaign.”

At the rally venue, workers distributed water, juices, and caps. Both men and women gathered to listen to the experienced leader’s election promises and plans for their welfare.
“From the day of the announcement of the elections on March 16 till now, we have already seized items worth Rs 12.89 crore. The seized items include narcotics, drugs, cash, and liquor. Similar kinds of cases come to light daily. We follow SOPs issued by the Election Commission of India to deal with such cases,” Verma said.

He also stated that they are actively working to communicate to the local population that they can have confidence in their local team and that the upcoming elections will be conducted with integrity and fairness. He stressed that conducting the elections presents its own set of difficulties. “We are taking security measures. We are continuously working with the police department,” he added.

“We have come up with eco-friendly initiatives keeping Lok Sabha elections in view. We are carrying out plantation. We are planning to attain the target of 10k plantations per day. We are planting medicinal and fruit plants,” he said.

Drawing attention to the objective behind doing so he said, “Every vote is important. Everyone should vote. That is what we are trying to convey through the plantation. Like every plant has a role to play, every vote counts.”

Ramesh Verma mentioned that voting is a Nation-building exercise. “We are going to ensure medical facilities at the poll booths. The voters can get themselves checked there,” he added.

Remarkably, both Lok Sabha constituencies in Goa—North Goa and South Goa—will undergo voting simultaneously on May 7 in a singular phase.

The electoral process for the 543 Lok Sabha seats will span across seven phases commencing on April 19.
The BJP has fielded Arun Govil from Meerut, the actor who played Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan in the 80s. The BJP also eyes Western UP with optimism to achieve its ambitious target of 370 seats on its own, despite facing setbacks in the last elections. In 2014, the BJP secured 24 out of 27 seats in the region, which dwindled to 19 in 2019, with all eight seats going to the SP-BSP combined.

In 2019, BJP candidate Rajendra Agarwal had then managed to clinch the Meerut seat by defeating SP-backed BSP candidate Haji Yakub Qureshi by a thin margin of less than 5,000 votes.

Notably, in the 2024 elections, BJP candidate Arun Govil will face SP candidate Bhanu Pratap Singh and BSP candidate Devvrit Tyagi in Meerut.

With political dynamics shifting in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is spearheading a robust alliance, encompassing parties like the RLD, SBSP, Apna Dal (S), and Nishad Party, bolstering its position.

Lok Sabha election 2024 in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1.

Phase 1 voting will be held on April 19, Phase 2 voting will be held on April 26, Phase 3 on May 7, Phase 4 on May 13, Phase 5 on May 20, Phase 6 voting on May 25 and Phase 7 voting will be held on June 1.

</excerpt>

Surendra Singh Bhoi, formerly the district Congress Committee (DCC) president of Balangir district, switched allegiance to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) ahead of the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha polls. Bhoi formally joined the BJD at Sankha Bhawan after resigning from his positions within the Congress, including his primary membership and the post of President DCC, Balangir, as well as his AICC membership. Notably, Bhoi’s departure from the Congress marked the end of his 38-year-long association with the party.

This development occurred shortly after Cuttack MP Bhatruhari Mahtab and ex-MP Siddharth Mohapatra joined the BJP in Delhi, with Mahtab having previously resigned from the BJD on March 22. Mahtab, a six-time MP representing the Cuttack Lok Sabha seat since 1998, has been a prominent figure in Odisha politics.

In the past Lok Sabha elections in Odisha, the BJD emerged as the dominant party in the state, securing 20 out of the 21 seats, with the BJP winning a single seat. In the subsequent 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJD again secured the most seats, followed by the BJP and the Congress, with the BJD winning 12 seats, the BJP securing 8 seats, and the Congress managing to secure just one seat.

The decisions encompass various aspects, ranging from allowance hikes to support for artificial intelligence initiatives. Goyal highlighted these decisions in the context of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, expected to take place in May. Here’s a breakdown of the major announcements:

4% Increase in Dearness Allowance (DA): The Union Cabinet approved a 4% hike in Dearness Allowance for government employees and Dearness Relief for pensioners. This increase, effective from January 1, 2024, raises the rate to 50% of the basic pay/pension. Additionally, various allowances like transport, canteen, and deputation have been raised by 25%. House Rent Allowance (HRA) has also seen an increase.

Continuation of ₹300 Ujjwala Subsidy: The Cabinet approved the continuation of a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to 12 refills per year under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). This scheme will be available from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, with a total expenditure of ₹12,000 crores.

₹10,371 Crore Outlay for IndiaAI Mission: The Cabinet endorsed the ‘IndiaAI Mission,’ a comprehensive nationwide initiative with a budget of ₹10,371.92 crores over five years.
MSP Increase for Raw Jute by ₹285 per Quintal: The government raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for raw jute by ₹285 per quintal, bringing it to ₹5335 per quintal.
₹10,037 Crore for the Uttar Poorva Scheme: The Cabinet approved a ₹10,037-crore scheme to promote industrialization in the Northeast region. </excerpt>

In the midst of the ongoing voting for the 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, Samajwadi Party MLA and leader Manoj Kumar Pandey stepped down from the role of party chief whip. This move comes after his non-participation in the meeting called by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav regarding the Rajya Sabha elections, held a day earlier.

Pandey expressed his decision, stating, “I have requested the party chief to accept my resignation from the post of Chief Whip.” This development is closely monitored as voting dynamics for the Rajya Sabha seats unfold.

Following a meeting with Pandey, Uttar Pradesh Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh revealed that Pandey, a supporter of Sanatan Dharma, voiced his discontent and advocated for the participation of everyone in the darshan of Ram ji. Singh noted, “Many public representatives are joining the BJP due to being influenced by PM Modi’s policies and the development happening in the country.”

Adding to the uncertainty surrounding party allegiance, another Samajwadi Party MLA, Rakesh Pratap Singh, hinted at voting against the party, emphasizing, “I’m not angry with anyone; I will vote according to the voice of the inner soul.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, after casting his vote for the Rajya Sabha elections in Lucknow, displayed a victory sign. Simultaneously, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav participated in the election by casting his vote.

Predicting cross-voting, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar stated, “The 8 candidates from the BJP are going to win. Raja Bhaiya and all our allies are in support of BJP.” Rajbhar claimed that Samajwadi Party leaders are openly agreeing to vote for BJP, anticipating a scenario of cross-voting.

Amidst the dynamic electoral landscape, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed optimism about winning three seats in the Rajya Sabha election. However, he acknowledged the potential for BJP to employ various tactics and suggested that some leaders within his party might pursue personal gains by aligning with the BJP.

In Uttar Pradesh, where 10 Rajya Sabha seats are at stake, the BJP has fielded eight candidates, and the Samajwadi Party has nominated three candidates. The BJP is confident in securing seven seats, while the Samajwadi Party envisions winning three seats. Reports indicate concerns about potential cross-voting.

The voting process for the Rajya Sabha seats occurred on Tuesday, with results expected on the same day. The outcome carries significance in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha polls in the country.

Karnataka is represented by 28 MPs in the Lok Sabha. In the previous elections, the BJP won 25 seats, while the Congress and JD(S) won one seat each, and an independent supported by the BJP won one seat.

This time, the Janata Dal (S) has formed an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka just before the Lok Sabha elections.

PM Modi is scheduled to address three rallies in Begusarai, Bettiah, and Aurangabad in the state.
Similarly, Amit Shah is expected to address gatherings in Sitamarhi, Madhepura, and Nalanda during January and February. JP Nadda might hold rallies in several places, particularly in the Seemanchal and eastern regions of Bihar.
Bihar’s political landscape has witnessed a shift, with the BJP now in opposition while the JDU is part of the Mahagathbandhan government.
Nitish Kumar has successfully united opposition leaders for the upcoming elections, marking a change from the previous alliance with the BJP. The battle is set for all 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, where the NDA secured 39 seats in the last elections, with Congress winning one.

Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gathered in Delhi for a crucial meeting to deliberate on the upcoming consecration ceremony at Ayodhya’s Ram Temple and devise a strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The meeting, held at the party headquarters, saw the presence of key figures, including Union Ministers Bhupendra Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnav, Assam Chief Minister Hemant Vishwa Sharma, and general secretaries Tarun Chugh and Sunil Bansal.

The agenda of the meeting includes discussions on beneficiary outreach, booth-level programs, door-to-door awareness of government schemes, and plans for public meetings, according to party sources. The review of the formation of clusters for Lok Sabha, previously discussed in a BJP meeting, is also on the agenda. Issues that need public attention as highlights of the BJP for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 will be listed, including pre- and post-programs related to the consecration of the Ram Mandir.

Sources suggest that rallies led by senior ministers and leaders will be decided once the cluster-making work is completed. A subsequent significant meeting at Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir is planned with the participation of two representatives from every state. BJP National President JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are expected to attend this crucial meeting.
