</excerpt>

Sritapa Mahanty is an Indian author, nature lover, and an inspiring storyteller who beautifully captures life’s emotions in her writing. She has published four books spanning fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, and has been honoured with the IAA Authors Award and IAA Voice Award in literature.

She began her literary journey at the age of 11, writing poems for her school magazines. After spending 16 years at a Fortune 500 company, she debuted as an author in 2023 with A Heart’s Journey, drawing from her rich life experiences. In a recent interview with Prof. Shiv Sethi, the author shares the following excerpts from her literary journey.

What inspired your return to writing?

I write my stories from heart based on personal experiences and keen observations of the world around me. My demanding IT job often kept me away from writing, leaving me disconnected from my creative self. During this time, I felt a strong urge to return to writing. I realized I didn’t want to keep pushing it aside and regret later, so I decided to set aside some time every day to start writing. It helped me regain clarity and learn to face challenges with renewed confidence. Now, I am grateful for that decision to reconnect with myself through my passion.

Tell us about your literary journey and how it shaped A Heart’s Journey.
In 2023, I published my debut book, A Heart’s Journey, with a desire to connect with readers on a deeper level, helping them understand their true selves, unlock their inner strength, and practice self-love. I believe every individual is blessed with power within; we just have to harness it to excel in life with a positive mindset. The book provides practical advice on finding a soulmate, helping readers navigate the complexities of relationships with wisdom and confidence, reducing the uncertainty many face in love. My collaborative works include Pages of Power, Love Connection, and Revolutionaries of India.

Why is the theme of self-discovery so important in your book?
Self-discovery is crucial in my book because it guides readers to be authentic and recognize their strengths. A Heart’s Journeyfocuses on this theme because I want readers to understand that even in the darkest times, there is an opportunity for growth. The book encourages readers to accept their flaws, overcome challenges, and recognize their inner strength.

Has A Heart’s Journeybeen made into an audiobook? If so, what challenges did you face in producing it?

Yes, I narrated my own audiobook. The initial chapters took longer to record since I had to read continuously during quiet hours at night. My tip is to choose a calm time of day and, if possible, record everything in one session; otherwise, stick to the same timing.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Trust your voice, be authentic, and write regularly. Be open to constructive feedback from trusted people. Don’t chase perfection; you will get there eventually. Keep exploring your imagination and read widely to enhance your creativity. Be persistent, and don’t be discouraged by rejection or setbacks.

How do you use your platform to give back to society as an author?
Through my writing, I aim to give my readers hope, foster resilience, and encourage self-discovery, helping them lead a life with a positive mindset and a never-give-up attitude.

</excerpt>

Poetry book “Storms and Breezes On Mortal Waves” by eminent Indian author Ambika Ananth is a captivating collection of poems that reflects over multiple human emotions. The other part of the book entitled as “Sweet Dependence has been painstakingly penned down by Dr. Yeshodhara Gopala Rao. The book co-authored by these two beautiful souls is a journey inward. Reading these greatly moving poems one is instantly reminded of the doyen of Romantic Age John Keats who remarks in one his famous poems ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ that heard melodies are sweet but unheard sweeter. In her mellifluous but poignant tone, Amiba waxes eloquent and croons of pains and pleasures. In her poem “Party Time”, there is palpable happiness everywhere leavened with glittering lights and perfumes, yet the poet seems to be ill at ease as she compares the ambience with just an artificial dazzle. The poet says,

“We wear a different cloak of falsity”.

To fit into our social groove”.

The poet Ambika has rightly taken a dig at the hypocrisy of modern day men which aptly reminds us of a famous Hindi number

“Jab bhi ji chahe nai duniya basa lete hain log

Ek chehre pe kai chehre laga lete hain log”

Such is the intensity of the pent-up emotions that they bring profuse tears in the eyes of your mind. The following lines from the poem “Come Back To Us” shed a plenty of light on the fathomless profundity of the pangs of separation from a loved one.

“ I wish I could wish you a Happy Birthday…

Alas! the wound in my heart is still bleeding,

raw and sore,

reminding me-

that joy is forever lost….” it is a matter of stupendous elation to witness the fact that both the poets have exercised the immense literary powers to the fullest which they possess due to the poetic license. Those who are the votaries of poetry understand the term poetic license fully well. It is a form of liberty the poets retain with which they mend the established norms of a language. The instances of syntactic and morphological manipulations are not rare to find in this book. The conventional structure of English Language has been bended deftly by particularly by Ambika Ananth to enhance the emotive effects of her poetic pieces.

“A Paradise of Pastures green,

Or deserts mercilessly sun-beaten,

Mad delirium or sweet ecstasies….

life is a canvas in motion…”

The suppleness of the verses draws our attention to the great poets like ST Coleridge and William Wordsworth but the poet Ambika is closer to TS Eliot who is hailed as the father of modern poetry. The way he has exposed the seamy side of modern day society, similar streaks, we find in Ambika. Here the poem “She” by Ambika has been dedicated to the birth of a girl child which is still not an occasion to rejoice over in many families. We come across a baby girl in the womb who is oblivious of the brutal realities of his berserk world. The poet reflects over the idea that ‘She’ is the personifications of innocence but unmindful of the bitter realities of this barbaric world. It would not be erroneous to remark that poets are the weird and wild creature of God, gifted with subtle and sensitive minds and it is their ultra-sensitive mind which makes them wallow in utmost grief.

Hence, the element of poignancy is quite conspicuous in this anthology as we read the pieces like “Unquiet Oceans Of Humanity ” wherein the poet takes recourse to the literary device of gripping imagery, personification and lends “innocence” the human attributes by saying that it is dying its death in its infancy. Here, it is pertinent to state that all of the poems have been artistically and aesthetically embellished with several poetic devices such as metaphors, similes, personification, consonance, enjambments and so on. While delivering a discourse on Poetic Language, David Crystal states in one of the literary conferences that Language charged with emotions is poetry. Quite in agreement with the eminent linguist, the language of this book is deeply emotive which warms the cockles of every heart. Therefore, it would be a delightful buffet for all the poetry buffs and will also give a lot of soul-stirring situations to cogitate over.

</excerpt>

Reecha Agarwal Goyal is an eminent Indian author who has four remarkable books to her credit. As a senstive writer, she understands the different aspects of society and thus quite artistically reflects over them.

Her first book – ‘Such is Her Life’ – a direct hit on patriarchy – was an instant hit and has received rave reviews from readers all over the country.

Her latest book, The Eyes of a Killer, has been taken up for screen adaptation down south.

Excerpts

Q. What motivated you to focus your poetry specifically on women’s empowerment?

A. My motivation stems from a desire to uplift and amplify women’s voices. Poetry is a powerful medium for expressing emotions and experiences, and I wanted to create a space where women could feel seen and validated. By highlighting their struggles and triumphs, I aim to inspire confidence and encourage women to embrace their identities and potential.

Q. How do you think your poetry has impacted women across the nation?

A. I’ve received countless messages from women who say my poetry has resonated with their personal experiences. Many have shared that my work has inspired them to stand up for themselves, pursue their dreams, and support one another. The sense of community that emerges from these connections is truly heartening. It reinforces the idea that when women share their stories, they create a ripple effect that empowers others to do the same.

Q. How does it feel to see your book being adapted for the screen, and what emotions do you associate with this experience?

A. Seeing my book adapted for the screen is incredibly thrilling and surreal. It’s a validation of the hard work and passion that went into writing the story. I feel a mix of excitement and anxiety, as I hope the adaptation captures the essence of the characters and themes that resonated with readers. Ultimately, I’m eager to see how the visual medium can bring new dimensions to the story, allowing it to reach a wider audience.

Q. What aspects of the adaptation process are you most looking forward to, and what do you hope the film will convey to its viewers?

A. I’m particularly looking forward to collaborating with the filmmakers and seeing how they interpret the narrative visually. I hope the film conveys the same emotional depth and themes of resilience that are central to the book. My goal is for viewers to leave feeling inspired and connected to the characters, understanding their journeys on a deeper level. I want the adaptation to spark conversations about the themes I explored, creating a lasting impact beyond just entertainment.

Q. What advice do you have for women looking to express themselves through poetry or writing?

A. My advice is to write from the heart and be unapologetically authentic. Your voice is unique and valuable, and your experiences deserve to be shared. Don’t be afraid to tackle difficult subjects; vulnerability often resonates deeply with readers. Engage with other writers and seek feedback, but stay true to your vision. Remember, your words can inspire and empower others, so let your creativity flow without fear.

</excerpt>

After the success of her heart touching books like “The Dangling Gandhi ” Tabularasa “ “Misplaced Heads” ,a highly prolific author, Jayanthi Sankar, once again dips her quill in the ink with her latest book “ When Will You Die?”.. Jayanthi Sankar skillfully depicts human complexities with quite a few nuanced surprises in store in her recent epistolary novella ‘When Will You Die?’ It leaves the reader mesmerised because the book exudes a sense of innovative originality for which the expatriate author has been acknowledged all across the globe. The best part about her writings is that they are richly loaded with the Aristotelian element of probability and relatability which are quite conspicuous in her latest book ‘When Will You Die?’.

It will be fully pertinent to place this novella in the catagory of a socio psychological thriller in which the master raconteur deftly and consummately explores a spectrum of intense human emotions. The novelist must be fully applauded for reviving the dying genre of epistolary novels. Epistolary novel is an art form that is unfolded through the medium of letters written by one or more of the characters. Originating with Samuel Richardson’s Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded (1740), the story of a servant girl’s victorious struggle against her master’s attempts to seduce her, it was one of the earliest forms of novels to be developed and remained one of the most popular up to the 19th century. The epistolary novel’s reliance on subjective points of view makes it the forerunner of the modern psychological novels. Though psychological novels have carved their niche in the realm of modern day fiction writing, epistolary novels seem to have taken a back seat. Here revival of this literary genre can be attributed to the author of ‘When Will You Die?’ with an absolute certitude.

The narrative largely couched in epistolary style dwells upon the profundity of humans relationships. The central protagonists around whom the narrative revolves are Susan, her husband Suiyi, and her brother, Joe. Susan’s mother passes away while giving birth to Joe. After the untimely demise her mother it is Susan who has to assume the duty of a foster mother at the tender age of twelve only. Thereafter Susan makes all-out attempts to grapple horns with her trying circumstances and strives hard for a better life for her family. On the path to the attainment of a placid and blissful life, she happens to establish an unlikely bond of friendship with the Singaporean Suiyi by writing a slew of letters to him.
As time flies, an adult Susan now relocates to Singapore to turn her dreams of employment and a better life into reality. There she walks down the isle with Suiyi, and endeavours to integrate and establish her identity on the foreign soil. Joe is financially and emotionally dependent on her, and his downward spiral begins to take a toll on both of them. The story splendiferously alternates between the idyllic beaches of Goa and the concrete jungles of Singapore.

What all the more astonishes the readers is the way in which the author widens her literary canvas by splashing it with the most unconventional hues. The narration undergoes several variations.

At times it is a leaky roof that safeguards the secrets; other times it is a draft email which remains unsent for umpteen years. The author indeed possesses a special knack for forging a deep connect with her readers which is quite commendably achieved with the skilful usage of quality language. Another most astounding aspect about her language is its remarkable lucidity.

A narrative loaded with complex and subtle emotions flows unhindered leavened with a great ease. With its convincing characterisation and engrossing narrative, the book can be aptly designated as an extraordinary work of literary fiction which has all the elements of a magnum opus in the fiefdom of fiction. Therefore, if you are looking for something really engaging and gripping to cater to your literary tastebuds , ‘When Will You Die?’ is going to be the best take for you.

In Bed of Arrows, Bhargava delves into Bhishma’s internal conflicts as he lay on a bed of arrows, reflecting on the choices that led to the epic war. The narrative presents Bhishma as a man bound by his vows, torn between duty and desire, and ultimately helpless in the face of his fate.

Bhargava’s portrayal is both poignant and thought-provoking, offering readers a chance to engage deeply with the character’s struggles.

The evening was graced by notable personalities including Salman Khurshid, Saleem Shervani, Pavan K. Varma, Neelima Dalmia Adhar, and Raghav Chandra, amongst others who contributed to the rich discussions surrounding the book. Bhargava’s Bed of Arrows explores the life of Bhishma, a mighty warrior whose vow of celibacy and unwavering loyalty to the throne of Hastinapura set the stage for the catastrophic conflict of Kurukshetra.

Bhargava began the evening by sharing the inspiration behind his novel, a journey that started during the COVID-19 lockdown. “I started writing this book during the days of COVID, re-watching the Mahabharata on Doordarshan,” Bhargava explained. “I had always been drawn to Bhishma Pitamah’s character. By the third or fourth day, I told my wife that I was going to write a book on this man.”

Raghav Chandra, a distinguished guest, praised the novel for its exploration of timeless themes such as sacrifice and karma. “This book is all about sacrifice, karma, and atonement – or the punishment that you bear upon yourself for your past karma,” Chandra remarked. “In modern fiction, atonement occurs within a single lifetime, but Bhishma’s story suggests that atonement transcends time and space.”

Neelima Dalmia Adhar reflected on the human aspects of Bhishma that Bhargava so vividly captures in the novel. “There is a certain humanizing of Bhishma Pitamah that Kush has beautifully brought to life in his book. He is full of flaws; he is not this great patriarch expected to be perfect. On his deathbed, he is full of regrets and remorse, but my answer to that is that regrets and remorse can evoke grief but cannot be condoned.”
Pavan K. Varma, adding his thoughts on the significance of the book, stated, “This book is important because I don’t believe that the mysteries of the Mahabharata have been fully unraveled. The Mahabharata is perhaps the only existing central Hindu epic that fully explores the relativity of right and wrong.”

In Conversation with Kush Bhargava:

Q: Why did you choose Bhishma Pitamah as the focus of your novel?
Bhargava: “Bhishma Pitamah has always intrigued me because of the contradictions in his life. He’s seen as a hero, yet his life is filled with helplessness and sacrifice. I wanted to explore the psychological and emotional turmoil of this great character, who was bound by his own vows despite his immense power.”

Q: How do Bhishma’s struggles resonate with contemporary readers?
Bhargava: “Bhishma’s story is universal. It speaks to the ongoing conflict between personal desires and societal duties that many of us face today. His struggle between dharma and personal sacrifice is something that resonates deeply, especially in a world where we’re constantly trying to balance personal ambitions with responsibilities.”

Q: What do you hope readers take away from Bed of Arrows?
Bhargava: “I hope readers gain a deeper understanding of the moral complexities and human emotions that drive us. Bhishma’s life is a testament to the fact that even the mightiest can be vulnerable. I want readers to reflect on the consequences of their choices, much like Bhishma did.”

The novel, Bed of Arrows promises to be a significant addition to contemporary Indian literature, inviting readers to reflect on the timeless themes of duty, desire, and destiny.

</excerpt>

In an age where the clamor of daily life often drowns out moments of quiet reflection, I have rediscovered the profound impact of poetry through the lens of micro poetry. This minimalist form of poetic expression, characterized by its brevity and depth, has allowed me to capture fleeting emotions and thoughts with precision and grace.

The Power of Brevity
Micro poetry thrives on its capacity to distill complex ideas into a handful of words. In a world where attention spans are shrinking, this form resonates with those who may not have the luxury of time for longer literary works. Through my micro poems, shared with a growing audience on social media, I strive to offer glimpses of beauty and insight that speak directly to the heart. Each micro poem is a complete universe in miniature, crafted with deliberate care. The challenge—and thrill—lies in making every word count, every line impactful. This form of poetry demands a disciplined approach, yet it opens up a realm of creative freedom where deep emotions and themes can be expressed succinctly and powerfully.

Championing a Revival
With over 1,000 micro poems to my name, I am dedicated to reviving poetry’s relevance in today’s fast-paced world. Poetry should be accessible to all, not confined to academic circles or literary elites. My mission is to demonstrate that poetry can be both profound and approachable, a part of everyday life rather than an esoteric pursuit. Social media has been instrumental in this effort, offering a platform where poetry can reach diverse audiences quickly and directly. Platforms like Instagram and Twitter enable me to engage with readers across the globe, fostering a community where poetry is celebrated and shared widely.

Innovating Through Fusion
My exploration extends beyond micro poetry into the fusion of prose and poetry within my novels. This blending of narrative and lyricism pushes the boundaries of traditional storytelling, creating a reading experience that is both immersive and contemplative. By integrating poetry into prose, I aim to enhance the emotional resonance of my stories and invite readers to engage deeply with the language and its rhythms.

Here are the excepts from her recent conversation with the team Daily Guardian.

Excerpts
Q. Please tell us about your literary journey.
A. My literary journey has been long and rewarding. I have 14 published books, including five collections of my English and Hindi poems (with two more in the pipeline), two edited anthologies, two translated novels (one of which is published by the Sahitya Akademi), three collections of translated poems, and several other critical books. Additionally, I have many prestigious translation projects underway.

Q. Which book is your favourite, and what are your chief themes?
A. One of my favourite books is Vibrant Voices: An Anthology of 21st Century Indian Women Poets in English, which I edited and was published by the Sahitya Akademi. It represents the voices of 102 contemporary Indian women poets writing today from across India and abroad. My themes focus on women-related issues, social problems, the environment, war, and human relationships.

Q. How else have you contributed to literature?
A. My work, including poems, stories, interviews, and forewords, is featured in over 130 national and international anthologies, journals, books, and even the digital pandemic archives of Stanford University, USA. I have presented poems at various online and offline poetry meets and literature festivals, including Sahitya Akademi’s Sahityotsav, FOSWAL (Federation of South Asian Writers and Literature), Washington DC South Asian Literature Festival, and regularly participate in poetry meets and talk shows on Doordarshan and AIR. Additionally, I have served as the editor of the Creative Pages of the international journal English Scholars Beyond Borders.

Q. Any other milestones?
A. My critical reviews, as well as reviews by eminent scholars of my works, have been published in prestigious papers and journals like The Statesman, Sahitya Akademi’s Journal Indian Literature, Different Truths, and Setu. I also work as a reviewer for literary awards and book publications for top national and state literary organizations. Additionally, I serve as the Vice President of Mahila Kavya Manch Punjab, President of Litspark: A Literary Forum, and have been honored with numerous prestigious awards.

Q. What are your plans?
A. Literature is an ocean with unlimited pearls. Post-retirement, I continue to passionately pursue writing, critical and editorial work, and trans-creation. I plan to write a longer work of fiction, curate more anthologies, and bring out additional collections of my poetry through translation.

Q. What are your challenges as a writer, editor, and translator?
A. As a writer, there are phases of productivity and dormancy that I believe most writers experience. Being an editor is both a challenging job and a rewarding experience. As a translator, the toughest ordeal is capturing connotative meanings, language-specific idioms, and cultural nuances.

Q. What is your advice for budding writers?
A. Believe in yourself, follow your passion, listen to your heart, and never give up.

</excerpt>

BOOK REVIEW
A profoundly impactful and eye-opening book that courageously tackles the deeply entrenched issue of sex selection in India, I Want a Boy by Dr. Aruna Kalra, a distinguished obstetrician and gynecologist with over 25 years of experience shines a light on India’s troubling obsession with male children with her experiences that exposes the grim reality of sex-selection procedures and their impact on women’s lives.

The book is more than just a collection of stories; it is a wake-up call for society. Dr. Kalra takes the reader on an eye-opening journey through the lives of women from both affluent and marginalized communities, all of whom face the same societal pressures to bear male offspring. Her vivid descriptions of the heartbreak and suffering endured by these women make the book an emotionally charged and unforgettable read.

At the core of the book lies the stark reality of selective abortions and their devastating impact on women’s physical and emotional health. The author presents real-life cases from her practice, where the desire for a male child leads families to resort to extreme measures, including repeated pregnancies and selective terminations. These practices are not confined to a particular socioeconomic class; they are pervasive across Indian society, from high-end maternity homes to government hospitals.

Dr. Kalra’s narrative is further enriched by her autobiographical accounts, providing a glimpse into her transformation from a medical practitioner who witnessed these atrocities to a vocal advocate against them. Her journey is both inspiring and disheartening, as she recounts the numerous cases where women, stripped of their autonomy and self-respect, succumbed to societal pressures.

The book serves as a scathing critique of the cultural norms that continue to perpetuate the preference for male children. Dr. Kalra exposes the outdated rituals and practices that still dictate the lives of women, often reducing them to mere vessels for producing male heirs. Through her candid and unflinching portrayal of these issues, she challenges readers to confront the deep-rooted biases that sustain this harmful mindset.

In one of the excerpts, the author shares a powerful and emotional moment in her medical practice. A frail, exhausted woman, burdened by repeated pregnancies, faces the pressure of societal norms over her health. Dr. Kalra’s frustration with the situation highlights the deep-rooted challenges women face in making choices about their bodies. The scene powerfully illustrates the tension between cultural expectations and the need for better awareness and support for women’s health.

One of the most striking aspects of I Want a Boy is its timeliness. In light of recent atrocities against women, including the widely publicized Kolkata incident, Dr. Kalra’s work is a crucial exploration of the ongoing struggle for women’s safety and rights in India. She emphasizes that the fight against gender discrimination is far from over and calls for greater empathy and understanding towards women’s health and well-being.

Dr. Kalra’s writing is accessible and authoritative, making complex medical and social issues understandable to a broad audience. Her ability to blend personal anecdotes with broader social commentary adds depth to the narrative, allowing readers to connect with the stories on a deeply emotional level.

In conclusion, I Want a Boy is a compelling and necessary read for anyone interested in understanding the challenges faced by women in contemporary India. Dr. Aruna Kalra’s courageous and compassionate approach to the subject matter makes this book an essential contribution to the ongoing discourse on women’s rights and safety. It urges society to confront and change the deep-seated cultural biases that harm women and strip them of their dignity.

Price – Rs 499
About the book:
A SEARING NOVEL ABOUT HOW SMALL-TOWN INDIA GOT POLARISED BY ADVANI’S RATH YATRA AND HOW THE SEEDS OF A MILITANT HINDU NATIONALISM WERE SOWN.
Mohalla Aramganj is abuzz with speculations and debates about the impending arrival of L. K. Advani’s Ram Rath.
This mohalla is made up of high-caste families that live at and near the Aramganj Chowk. Branching off the chowk are lanes and bylanes the residents of which are from low and backward castes, as well as Muslims.
The lane in which the Muslims of Aramganj reside known as Rayyat Toli. One of the residents of Rayyat Toli, Ashiq Miyan, is a tailor who is the only Muslim to have a shop at Aramganj Chowk. He is known to be an expert dancer who performs awe-inspiring feats in the Dussehra immersion procession. He is also known to be a devotee of Ram, with a keen knowledge of the scriptures.

But now that the Mandal Commission recommendations have been implemented and the storm thus created by Prime Minister V.P. Singh has been overshadowed by Advani’s trump card, the Rath Yatra, social equations are changing in Aramganj, and Ashiq finds himself caught in a web of politics and communal tension. Ashiq Miyan is at the heart of this brilliantly crafted novel. His fate is tied to the tectonic shifts caused by the news of the Rath Yatra, and it’s his fate that forms the ominous, macabre climax of this story.

Name: Behind The Startup
Author: Benjamin Shestakofsky
Price: Rs 599
Publisher: Westland Books
About the book:
THIS BOOK ANALYSES HOW VENTURE CAPITAL INFLUENCES THE FUNCTIONING OF STARTUPS AND AFFECTS ALL STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING EMPLOYEES, CONTRACTORS AND FOUNDERS.
This systematic analysis of everyday life inside a tech startup dissects the logic of venture capital and its consequences for entrepreneurs, workers, and societies. In recent years, dreams about our technological future have soured as digital platforms have undermined privacy, eroded labor rights, and weakened democratic discourse. In light of the negative consequences of innovation, some blame harmful algorithms or greedy CEOS. Behind the Startup focuses instead on the role of capital and the influence of financiers.
Drawing on nineteen months of participant-observation research inside a successful Silicon Valley startup, this book examines how the company was organized to meet the needs of the venture capital investors who funded it. Investors push startups to scale as quickly as possible to inflate the value of their asset. Benjamin Shestakofsky shows how these demands create organizational problems that managers solve by combining high-tech systems with low-wage human labor.
With its focus on the financialization of innovation, Behind the Startup explains how the gains generated by these companies are funneled into the pockets of a small cadre of elite investors and entrepreneurs. To promote innovation that benefits the many rather than the few, Shestakofsky compellingly argues that we must focus less on fixing the technology and more on changing the financial infrastructure that supports it.

</excerpt>

LOVE, a unique poetry collection by poet Arbind Kumar Choudhary, emerges as a great work of art that abides by Keatsean romantic doctrine to its utmost degree. The elements of Keatsean sensuousness, flight of imagination, philosophy of love, nature, and poetry, pictorial painting, classical traits, romantic content, lyrical outbursts, and subjectivity embellish this book to the core.

It is deeply gratifying to notice that the Keatsean fragrance permeates throughout this book, galvanizing readers and helping them resonate with it. The poet’s innate ability and scholarly understanding bridge the cultural gap between Indian, Greek, and Roman mythical messiahs. The blending of Indian mythical gods and goddesses with their Greek and Roman counterparts adds additional beauty and divine charm to all the poems enshrined in this anthology, while the dazzling pictorial painting of the erogenous zones of the fair sex makes the poet stand apart. The immortal love episodes of Sita-Ram, Radha-Krishna, Laila-Majnu, Heer-Ranjha, and others will continue to enchant readers through time.

Nature is the universal code of conduct for all living beings on this earth. Majuli, the Prayag of Assam, where the junction of the Brahmaputra, the Tuni, and the Swarnasiri attracts tourists from all corners of the world, offers glimpses of roaring clouds, chirping birds, flowing rivers, green trees, and more. Suffering is one of the mysteries of the universe. The mind and spirit of man advance when tried by suffering. All these themes are evidently covered in this book. It is an excellent specimen when it comes to heart-warming phrases. Some of the explored phrasal words—full-throated perverse, sworn friend, etc.—new words—Ramariam, lovearium, loveology, etc.—compound words, and colloquial words certainly make this anthology the first choice for readers in search of verses couched in sublime language.

Love has several hues and shades. Defining its different dynamics is certainly a daunting task, but the author must be praised for dealing with the theme of love in a quite engaging manner. Love undeniably is the universal gift of God that gives divine bliss to all creatures in general and human beings in particular. It germinates and blossoms in the pure psyche rather than elsewhere. Loveless life is worse than a curse. Love is the fragrance of life. Like Keats, the poet paints a dazzling picture of the erogenous zones of the fair sex in this rhymed quatrain of Love in this collection. As a lover of nature and its glittering objects, the poet paints a painterly picture that elicits not only his poetic philosophy of nature but also its beauty, eternal source of pleasure, and wisdom for poetry aficionados around the world. LOVE is an unparalleled jewel of Indian English verses that entices many versifiers to seek a draught of his poetic nectar. It is certainly a must-read at all times and in all places.

</excerpt>

The Goa Gambit by Anurag Tripathi is an exciting read that immerses readers in the dazzling yet dangerous world of Goa’s casinos. With a captivating story, vivid characters, and plenty of surprising twists, it’s a must-read for thriller enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy high-stakes gambling and political drama.

Set in the vibrant and chaotic casinos of Goa, the book follows a diverse group of characters, from politicians to celebrities, all seeking quick wealth and power. The story is filled with intrigue and danger, where nothing is as it seems. Tripathi’s novel is not only thrilling but also delves into themes of ambition and greed, using the casino as a metaphor for life’s unpredictable nature.

In the book, the characters are well-developed and intriguing. Each one brings something unique to the story, and their interactions create a web of suspense. The protagonist is especially interesting, being a flawed character in a morally complex world. Tripathi excels at crafting realistic characters, whether it’s a power-hungry politician, a scandal-ridden celebrity, or a casino operator with hidden motives. Each character feels authentic and adds to the story’s tension.

It goes beyond thrills to explore themes like the corruption of power and money, the risks of unchecked ambition, and the moral choices in pursuing success. The casino symbolizes life’s unpredictability and the dangers of chasing dreams.

The book also offers a subtle look at modern society, where appearances can be misleading and right and wrong are often unclear. Tripathi uses Goa’s blend of beauty and hedonism to highlight the duality of human nature—our craving for pleasure and our potential for self-destruction. However, the pacing falters slightly in the middle, which may cause the story to drag for some readers before it picks up again.

It is similar to classic thrillers like Casino by Nicholas Pileggi or The Godfather by Mario Puzo, featuring high stakes and characters immersed in power, money, and danger. However, Tripathi adds his unique touch with an Indian perspective and a deep grasp of his characters’ complexities.

In conclusion, The Goa Gambit is a thrilling read that keeps you hooked. With its gripping plot, engaging characters, and deep themes, it stays with you long after the last page. It’s a great choice for thriller fans or anyone seeking an entertaining and thoughtful novel.

</excerpt>

Westland Books proudly announces the release of Be Financially Smart: The Modern Woman’s Guide to Money, authored by the renowned financial expert and thought leader, Nita Menezes. As we celebrate India’s Independence Day, this book invites women to embark on a journey toward financial independence, offering them the tools and knowledge to take control of their financial destinies.

Be Financially Smart is not just another financial guide; it’s a transformative resource designed to empower women with a deeper understanding of personal finance. Nita Menezes, the founder of Financially Smart and MoneyPrastha, uses her extensive experience as a Certified Financial Planner and thought leader to craft a book that is both practical and inspirational. It’s a modern roadmap for women looking to break free from traditional financial limitations and to take charge of their financial futures with confidence.

Women have long excelled at managing household finances, yet many still hesitate when it comes to handling their personal finances. This book addresses that gap, providing not only financial advice but also tackling the psychological barriers that often hold women back from fully engaging with their financial lives. Menezes emphasizes that financial literacy is not just about managing money; it’s about fostering confidence and independence. By embracing financial literacy, women can make informed decisions, avoid common pitfalls, and contribute to a more inclusive and prosperous society.

Nita Menezes’ message is clear: as we honor our nation’s independence, we must also champion financial freedom for all. Financial empowerment for women, she argues, is not just a personal goal but a societal imperative. It’s about enhancing diversity, fostering independence, and creating a brighter, more prosperous future. Financial literacy is the key to this transformation, enabling women to unlock their potential and lead lives of confidence and security.

The book’s release is timely, aligning with the broader movement toward gender equality and financial empowerment. Nita Menezes, with her nearly three decades of expertise, brings a wealth of knowledge and practical insights to this work. Her background as a Certified Financial Planner, combined with her role as the National President of WICCI Financial Literacy & Management Council and India Country Chair for G100 Club—Financial Empowerment, makes her uniquely qualified to address the challenges women face in managing their finances.

Commissioning Editor Aurodeep Mukherjee underscores the importance of this book, noting that it not only identifies the hurdles women encounter but also offers concrete solutions. These solutions address both the societal norms and personal attitudes that can hinder financial empowerment. Be Financially Smart is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the social and psychological dynamics around money and to take actionable steps toward financial growth and security.

Menezes’ dedication to financial literacy extends beyond the pages of this book. She offers a range of online courses and workshops, including ‘My Financial Freedom Blueprint’ and ‘Financially Smart & Empowered Woman,’ aimed at helping women, teenagers, and professionals navigate the complexities of finance. Her work as a mentor and educator simplifies the intricacies of personal finance, making it accessible and actionable for all.

In conclusion, Be Financially Smart is more than just a guide—it’s a movement toward financial empowerment, urging women to seize control of their financial futures and, in doing so, contribute to a more equitable and thriving society. This Independence Day, commit to financial freedom with Nita Menezes as your guide.

</excerpt>

Ambika Ananth, a multi-talented and captivating bi-lingual writer, poet, reviewer, and translator, has left indelible impressions on soils of the literary realms with her absolutely mesmerizing prose and deeply riveting poetry. With a scintillating portfolio which boastfully consists of thirteen published works in both English and Telugu, Ambika has painstakingly and commendably explored varied genres that include poetry, prose, translation, short stories, and creative writings.

The book Cascades” by this personification of literary genius sheds light on her profoundly soul-stirring poetic journey that not only warms the cockles of the readers’ hearts but also takes them on a remarkable odyssey.

Aristotle, a great Greek philosopher, has pertinently remarked that poets are ultra sensitive human beings. They are innately endowed with highly subtle sensibilities with which they are fully able to connect with society and all the living beings inhabiting it. Quite in a similar vein, the author of “Cascade” has explored the deepest recesses and fathomless crevices of human heart. As we flip through the page of this book, we begin to swim through and soak into a vast ocean of multiple human emotions.

Here,while having a rendezvous with the poetic stanzas of Ambika, one is instantly reminded of a renowned English Poet William Wordsworth who says in the “Preface to the Lyrical Ballads” that Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility. This very spontaneity is indeed one of the hallmarks of Ambika’s poetry. Words flow with grace and elegance in a manner of cascades that gush out from the wombs of the mighty mountains. When she has remarkably inherited the Wordsworthian spontaneity, how could she stay away from keatsean sensibilities! Here, it will not be a hyperbole to compare her with John Keats in this particular context. The way John keats paints on his canvas with words, she,too, is an excellent word painter. The poems, enshrined in this poetic collection, are so brilliantly vivid that they instantly succeed to draw readers into a world where each poem emerges as a masterpiece in itself.

This is what which exactly sets “Cascades” apart and most befittingly puts it in the catagory of a magnum opus. Catching moments is indeed tough but capturing the fleeting moments and emotions is tougher. The poet has so artistically and aesthetically used high-quality literary devices which help her depict the deeper beauty. Whether the poet is engaged in painting a vivid picture of nature’s wonders, exploring the complexities of human relationships, or delving into the immeasurable depths of introspection and meditative states of mind , Ambika’s poetry exudes a sense of immaculate sublimity which is leavened with impeccable authenticity.

“Cascades” is not a run-of-the-mill collection of poems; it rather bears a strong testimony to the Linguistic Prowess of the poet. When we attempt to analyze her poems from a Linguistician’s point of view, we would fain state that the poet of this book is well versed with the art of Literary Stylistics. The way she has paid attention to the morphological and syntactic aspects of all the poems gives us a firm conviction that sanctity of language still holds water. It is not a thing of the by-gone era.

Hence, it would not be a fallacy to articulate that “Cascades” impels us to pause and cogitate over the intricate tapestry of multiple human emotions that embellish this anthology to the hilt, thereby, making it a must-read for all those who still repose their unshakable faith in the miraculous abilities and wondrous charms of poetry.

</excerpt>

Art for the sake of Art movement in literature became a bohemian creed in the 19th century; a slogan raised in defiance of those—from John Ruskin to the much later communist advocates of socialist realism who were of the opinion that the value of art was to serve some moral and didactic purpose. It was a rejection of the Marxist aim about literature. But it seems that Ravi Valluri, a renowned Indian author does not subscribe to the Art For Art’s Sake movement when he is particularly viewed through the prism of his mesmerising book “ Indian Stories: Images & Thoughts. Real authors as Geoffrey Chaucer puts in his words, never wallow in their personal grief and sorrow. Neither do they remain confined to their own ivory towers. They closely engage with the society they inhabit and depict it in its various hues and shades through their literary masterpieces.

Quite in a similar manner, the author of the book Indian Stories: Images & Thoughts, has thrown light on the different aspects of life in India with his vast experience which he has gathered while traveling in the every nook and cranny of india in the capacity of a highly decorated officer of the Indian Railways.

Therefore, while analysing this book, no literary critic will dare to refute the fact Valluri has obviously no leanings towards the school of Art for Art’s Sake. Au contraire, he appears to be influenced by the Art for Life’s sake school. We all understand the dictum that literature is a mirror of society and mirror to society as well. Indian Stories: Images & Thoughts is a book in which the writer chooses to wax abundantly eloquent about India’s history, culture, architect, places etc. He has, in this way, commendably shown us a mirror of Indian Society, the glorious ethos of which is deeply rooted in its heathy cultural roots. What an authentic picture of India, the author paints on this literary canvas!

Much to our gratification, It has even been mentioned in the blurb of the book also that India is a never ending saga and story. This ancient civilisation has remarkably amazing stories to narrate. Dwelling on the structural facet of the book, it will be really pertinent to remark that the author has most meticulously and prudently segmented this book into four sections which retain deeply engaging subtitles such as “Wanderlust Discovering India By Rail”, “Wondrous India: Discovering the Lesser- Known Trails,” “Well-Known Personalities, Lesser Known People” and “Wavering Mind, Wandering Thoughts.”

It is, no doubts, not the first book in the history of literature that sheds light on the cultural history of India but what makes it stand apart from the other books is the sheer elegance with which the author has carried forward his narratives. The profuse usage of subtle and sublime imagery in all the sub-narratives opens the inner eye of the readers and superlatively spell-bound, they feel as if they are beholding a three dimensional picture. Such is the literary prowess of the author of this excellent book. The rich and diverse culture of India has umpteen sub-cultures too which have been reflected over with utmost finesse. The book is also seeped in the essence of mythology with the undertones of biography and memoir. Written in an easy-to-comprehend language, this must-read book will endow readers with a slew of opportunities to discover the spirit of India.

</excerpt>

P.V. Laxmiprasad is the author of this critical book on Mahasweta Devi’s “The Queen of Jhansi” for certain subaltern elements. It is originally written by Mahasweta Devi, a prominent novelist in Bengali. “The Queen of Jhansi –A Subaltern Study” deals with one of India’s most important historical figures, a legendary heroine who led her troops against the British in the uprising of 1857, now remembered as the First Indian war of Independence against the British. If history has many hidden facts, this critical volume throws light on an important aspect Subaltern study, as most of Mahasweta Devi’s works normally focus on. It forms an integral part of this critical volume. According to the author , it is a personal history that is converted into a history of bravery, valor, and sheer patriotism. Mahasweta is not only critical of the English authorities but also with the Indian elite who failed to resolve the offence played against the Queen of Jhansi, and the revolt of 1857. Though viewed by scholars as a personal history, it is also looked into from subaltern dimensions.

The author pertinently opines that it was between the ruling class as represented by the British and the working class of Indians for which this critical volume breathes life and spirit. If history repeats history, the Indian Freedom Struggle, as the author observes, has been reclaimed in history books. The novel as claimed by Mahasweta Devi addresses the human element of Laxmi Bai against the backdrop of revolt of 1857. While presenting a novel view point the author finds that it was not a battle between one individual and the East India Company but the battle of supremacy for power and control on the native Indians who were looked down upon in their country. It is a clear reflection of how Indians were treated as Subalterns by the British. The discrimination, the battle the racial domination and the ill treatment made the history of Laxmi Bai a truly historical one. The Subaltern elements as explored with utmost meticulousness serve as a testimony to the century old inhuman treatment at the brutal hands of the barbaric British. Inequality and injustice as explored this critical book is yet another stamp of its author’s caliber as a critic. The battle was fought between the ruler and the ruled. If horrors, oppression, and depression moved the Indians in a pathetic situation, Indians succumbed to the British and became subalterns in the end.

The writer throws light on the British tactics in the forcible implementation of Doctrine of Lapse and how it troubled the Queen of Jhnasi. The crooked politics and the decisive phase have been brilliantly presented through the dialogues that bear the testimony of a true scholarship. It is not merely history but the history of century old oppression in the country. History is not seen as a record of absolute truth that is sacrosanct but as a perspective Hence, location, context, praxis assume as much importance as content.Towards the end the author aptly justifies the inclusion of literary records and documented history. The book concludes with a spectacle of “Corpses everywhere’’ which bear the horrible sights of the battle that Queen of Jhansi fights against the British. A well deserved literary tributes paid to the Queen of Jhansi for her martyrdom.

</excerpt>

Divya Venkateswaran’s A Slice of Reverie is a lyrical exploration of the human experience, a collection of poems that delves deep into the heart of the poet and, by extension, the reader. It’s a book that invites introspection, evoking a range of emotions from quiet contemplation to passionate intensity. Venkateswaran’s poetry is characterized by its raw honesty and accessibility. She writes with a clarity and directness that is both refreshing and impactful. The poems, while deeply personal, resonate with universal themes of love, loss, hope, and longing. The poet’s ability to capture the nuances of human emotion is evident in every verse.

One of the strengths of this collection is its diversity of form and style. Venkateswaran experiments with different lengths and structures, demonstrating her versatility as a poet. Whether it’s the concise and impactful short forms or the more expansive longer pieces, each poem leaves a lasting impression. The imagery in A Slice of Reverie is vivid and evocative. Nature is a recurring motif, used to reflect the poet’s inner world. Images of the sky, the sea, and the earth are woven seamlessly into the fabric of the poems, lending them a sense of depth and resonance.

The poet’s exploration of themes such as love, loss, and identity is particularly poignant. Poems like “Petrichor” and “Shadow” delve into the complexities of human relationships with a raw vulnerability that is both captivating and heartbreaking. On the other hand, poems like “Outside the Window” and “Diamond” offer a glimmer of hope and optimism, demonstrating the poet’s ability to balance light and shadow.Venkateswaran’s voice is distinct and authentic. Her poems are a reflection of her own experiences and emotions, yet they speak to a universal human experience. It is this authenticity that makes her work so relatable and compelling.

While the collection as a whole is impressive, there are certain poems that stand out. “Superwoman: A Myth” is a powerful indictment of societal expectations of women, while “Are We Aware” is a thought-provoking exploration of environmental consciousness. The short, sharp verses of “Yellow Butterfly” offer solace and reassurance in the face of life’s challenges.

A Slice of Reverie is a book that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned. It is a testament to the power of poetry to connect with readers on a deep and profound level. </excerpt>

A Series of Events that unfold in this book show us how

With the success of his heart-touching books like “Art of War To Art of Living” “Bombay Review”, “Magic of the Mind” and so on, Ravi Valluri, a prolific Indian author, dips his quill in ink, the result of which is his another deeply engaging book, a magnum opus entitled as “ A Tale of Parallels”. The book is an anthology of short stories in which the writer consummately paints a melange of men and women who resonate with every class of readers. Moreover, the writer displays a remarkable emotional and social sensitivity and thereby adroitly weaves a tapestry of life by shedding a flood of light on the spectrum of human emotions particularly in the context of mythology. The premise of the book is inexplicably interesting and greatly gripping. It has the ability to keep the readers hooked till the final story reaches its meaningful conclusion.

Having read Ravi’s two best selling masterpieces “Art of War To Art Of Living” and “Magic of The Mind”, the fact can not be refuted that the author has quite an intense propensity towards spiritualism and most probably in order to fully comprehend the different dynamics of religiosity and theology, the author must have taken up both intensive as well as extensive studies of our scriptures, the influence of which can quite palpably felt as we flip through the pages of the book “A Tale of Parallels”.

Hence, this book most pertinently has it intriguing evolution based on a slew of popular mythological characters from the epic of The Mahabharata.
When it comes to subtle creativity and abundant flair for writing, Ravi is indeed second to none. The way he has intertwined the stories and themes from the epic with the contemporary re-tellings makes him stand apart with somewhat a lofty stature. As the author represents the contemporary times, thus, his stories doubtlessly are about the present scenario. They take place in the contemporary fictional settings, but the themes that they explore are inspired from the epic. Here lies the remarkable genius of the author! Each 15 stories and a one act Play ( The play in the final part of the book intensifies the beauty of the book all the more.) have different meaningful versions of life hidden in them. Reading a short story collections in one sitting is Ill-advised, particularly when they are folk tales with mythological connotations. Somewhat similarly this book can be sixteen nights bed -time companion for the readers as all these stories are free standing and depict different scenarios

Most of the modern day story writers are of the opinion that plot is the soul of a story. Therefore they invest a chunk of their energy in weaving a well knit plot but in their dogged pursuit of creating a fully cohesive and coherent plot, they wittingly or unwittingly leave their characters in somewhat neglected state. Here deviating from the prevalent culture of story writing, the author of this book has been fully cognisant to the needs of his characters. It is the commendably convincing portrayal of most of the characters through whom the narratives are unfolded and on the shoulder of whom a well organised plots have been erected. Sublimity of style and lucidity of language are the other hallmarks of this book which certainly place it in the catagory of Modern Day Classics. little we learn from history.

</excerpt>

Stirring Mocktales’ by Tvisha Maheshwari is an enchanting debut that promises a delightful ride through the topsy-turvy world of adolescence. Published by Griffin Publication, this humorous collection of real-life episodes catapulted to an Amazon Bestseller rank of #4 overnight, a testament to Tvisha’s remarkable storytelling prowess.

Tvisha’s love affair with books began as soon as she learned the alphabet, and her passion for reading and writing shines brightly in this work. Inspired by Sudha Murty’s Grandma’s Bag of Stories, Tvisha began penning her own experiences and observations, which evolved into the hilarious and heartwarming tales compiled in ‘Stirring Mocktales’.
The book’s unique structure, with each chapter corresponding to a letter of the alphabet, adds a creative flair that keeps readers engaged. From A-Alienated to Z-Zoodle…Again, each chapter reveals a new adventure or insight, blending humour with poignant moments. The humour is woven with “wacky” elan, making the book pure magic and a treat for both children and adults.

The title, ‘Stirring Mocktales’, aptly captures the essence of this collection—a delectable mix of life experiences, growing-up pains, brutal honesty, delightful escapades, and “Down the Rabbit Hole” situations. Tvisha’s ability to recount incidents from as early as age three with vivid detail and humour makes this book a ‘sugar high’ of storytelling.
Tvisha’s style is mature and insightful with detailed descriptions and narration. Her free-flowing narrative and depth of knowledge make the book an engaging read. Stories like ‘Fashion Fiascoes’ and ‘Wheelchair Woes’ are drawn from her own life, showcasing her ability to find humour in the mundane and turn everyday chaos into laugh-out-loud moments.

One particularly memorable tale involves a car incident that transforms a routine day into a dramatic and comical saga, complete with a grandmother’s exaggerated exclamation and the impending dread of English finals. These stories, infused with Tvisha’s vibrant personality, offer a semi-autobiographical glimpse into her life, making her relatable and endearing to readers.

Tvisha’s humour is not just entertaining but also offers a fresh perspective on teenage life, making it a wonderful escape from the pressures of social media. Teens will easily relate to her narrative, while adults will find themselves reminiscing about their own pre-teen years with a smile.
In ‘Stirring Mocktales’, Tvisha agrees with Aristotle’s hypothesis: “There is no genius without a touch of madness.” Her genius lies in her ability to turn everyday experiences into a rollercoaster of hilarity and reflection.

Tvisha Maheshwari’s debut book is a testament to the fact that there’s no minimum or maximum age requirement to sit at the bestseller’s table. Her unique voice and comedic talent ensure that ‘Stirring Mocktales’ is a book that grabs your attention and makes it impossible to put down. As Tvisha herself says, “Welcome to the whacky wonderland that is my semi-autobiographical book,” and indeed, what a wonderfully entertaining wonderland it is!

</excerpt>

A POWERFUL LOOK AT INDIA’S AUTHORITARIAN TURN THROUGH THE EXPERIENCES OF POLITICAL PRISONERS

Silencing and punishing critical voices lies at the heart of the Hindu nationalist project. The Narendra Modi government’s ten-year rule has made this clear: to achieve its political dream of an exclusively ‘Hindu’ India, anyone who dares to question or dissent is a fair target.

In this unique book, Suchitra Vijayan and Francesca Recchia look at the Indian present through the lived experiences of political prisoners. Combining political and legal analysis with first-hand testimonies, the book explores the small gestures that constitute resistance inside and outside jail for the prisoners and their families, telling a story of destruction of institutions and erosion of rights.

How Long Can the Moon Be Caged? includes visual testimonies and prison writings from those falsely accused of inciting the Bhima Koregaon violence, by student leaders opposing the new discriminatory citizenship law passed in 2020 and by activists from the Pinjra Tod’s movement. In bringing together these voices, the book celebrates the courage, humanity and moral integrity of those jailed for standing in solidarity with India’s marginalised and oppressed communities.
