The leopard had caused panic for days, evading traps before its capture and release into a forest. This incident highlights ongoing human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
</excerpt>

A viral video captures a man catching a leopard by its tail that may save some lives. According to reports, Anand was seen holding the leopard by its tail until the forest officials reached there and safely trapped the animal. The drama occurred in a village in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district.

The leopard had gone amok, roaming freely in the village for many days. He had panicked everybody in the place. Despite the attempts made several times, it always managed to dodge the villagers as well as avoid the traps. Taking the thing into his hands, Anand made a heroic move, so bold that surprised the animal from all sides.

In the viral video, forest officials and villagers can be seen trying to catch the leopard. Anand quickly moves behind the animal and grabs its tail, giving the police time to cover it with a net and secure it using tree stems and ropes. The leopard was later released into a nearby forest on Tuesday.

The menace of leopard attack incidents has already been a growing concern in Karnataka, especially one such incident recently in Bengaluru last November where 52-year-old Kariamma was mauled to death by a leopard that dragged her to the forest while she was cutting grass near her home and there, the leopard killed her and had eaten parts of her body.

After the attack, the Forest Department stepped up their surveillance and catching efforts of leopards in that region. Heavy cages and eight pairs of camera traps were set up, which led to catching two leopards—a seven-year-old male and a nine-year-old female—within just a few days of the attack.

The video of Anand’s quick thinking and bravery starkly contrasts the challenges of human-wildlife conflict in that region.

In a 29-second video, picnickers are seen gathered around a small hill, calling out. Despite warnings from one person off-camera, the group continued to taunt the leopard with calls of “aa jaa, aa jaa.” Moments later, the leopard appeared from the bushes, and chaos erupted as it charged toward the group.

Three individuals—Nitin Samdariya (35), an ASI with Shahdol police, Akash Kushwaha (23), and Nandini Singh (25) were injured by the leopard’s claws and teeth.

Several other group members were hurt in the resulting stampede. “The woman sustained severe injuries as the leopard dug its claws into her head,” said Bhupendra Mani Pandey, the officer in charge of Sohagpur police station.

In an extraordinary discovery, a leopard with heterochromia iridum—a rare condition where each eye is a different color—has been photographed in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, Karnataka. Wildlife photographer Dhruv Patil, a member of the Karnataka State Wildlife Board, captured this remarkable sight during a safari in the reserve.

Patil spotted the old female leopard perched on a tree and took several photos. Upon reviewing the images, he noticed the leopard’s unusual eye coloration: one eye was bluish-green, while the other was brown. This rare genetic mutation, known as heterochromia iridum, had not previously been documented in big cats in India.

IAS officer Supriya Sahu, known for sharing wildlife facts and updates on social media, posted the photograph on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. She described the leopard’s eyes as “hypnotic” and praised Patil’s capture as a “brilliant” documentation of a rare condition.

Beware ! The eyes of this leapord will hypnotise you. In a first documentation of its kind in India, a leopard with two different coloured eyes has been photographed in Bandipur Tiger Reserve by Dhruv Patil. How incredible ! Heterochromia Iridium is a very rare genetic mutation… pic.twitter.com/cR1i9VAa6u

Heterochromia iridum can be categorized into three types:

Complete heterochromia: One iris is a different color from the other.

Partial heterochromia: A segment of one iris differs in color from the rest.

Central heterochromia: The inner part of the iris has a different color compared to the outer area.

The photograph quickly gained attention online, with reactions ranging from admiration for its rarity to appreciation for Patil’s skill. “Very intense,” commented one user, while another remarked on the rarity of the capture and the skill of the photographer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third-term swearing-in ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday, drew 8,000 guests, including foreign leaders, dignitaries, business magnates, and celebrities, creating a spectacle of political grandeur. However, amidst the high-profile proceedings, an unexpected guest stole the spotlight.

A viral video captured the moment when BJP MP Durga Das Uikey greeted President Droupadi Murmu after the swearing-in ceremony. In the background, a mysterious cat-like creature was spotted, sparking wild speculation on social media. Was it a leopard, an ordinary cat, or perhaps a dog? The video ignited a frenzy of theories about the unidentified animal strolling through the presidential palace.

Addressing the speculation, a senior official from the Delhi forest and wildlife department clarified to TOI, “The animal in the video is not a leopard. The animal looks like a dog or cat,” putting an end to the mystery surrounding the creature’s identity.

Interestingly, the President’s Estate, spanning 330 acres, is renowned for its rich biodiversity, boasting diverse flora and fauna. The estate features open spaces, forests, parks, gardens, fruit trees, and water bodies, creating a thriving ecosystem within its boundaries.

A notable highlight is the 75-acre nature trail aimed at promoting nature conservation awareness. This trail showcases both managed and natural ecosystems, connecting Rashtrapati Bhavan’s gardens through well-laid paths. Among its attractions are a pond ecosystem, butterfly corner, mango orchard, peacock point, and a forest area. Remarkably, the trail is home to 136 plant species and 84 animal species, including frogs, lizards, and snakes, highlighting the estate’s vibrant wildlife.

While the viral video sparked curiosity and speculation, it also shed light on the ecological richness of the President’s Estate, serving as a reminder of the importance of preserving India’s natural heritage.

</excerpt>

A family of five, including two children, faced a frightening ordeal when they were confined to a room for approximately two hours after a leopard invaded their residence and prowled around in the Malviya Nagar industrial area of Jaipur, Rajasthan, on Tuesday morning.

Following a rescue operation lasting over two hours, the forest department successfully tranquilized the leopard, allowing the trapped family to be safely rescued. According to authorities, the incident occurred around 8 am when a leopard strayed from a nearby forest and entered a factory in the industrial zone of Malviya Nagar on Tuesday.

At 9 am, a forest department team arrived at the scene, only to find that the leopard had already made its way into the neighboring Birla Institute of Technology. As word spread of the leopard’s presence on campus, panic ensued among college staff and students, leading to a rapid response from police and forest department personnel, who cordoned off the area.

In an effort to tranquilize the leopard, the forest department team fired a shot, but the leopard retaliated and attacked a guard named Ganesh Prajapat, causing serious injuries. He was promptly taken to a hospital for treatment. Following this incident, the leopard sought refuge in a house near a factory, where a family of five, including two children, were present. Sensing the leopard’s presence, they secured themselves inside a room, while the animal wandered inside the house.

Upon receiving the alert, a team of forest department officials promptly arrived at the scene and initiated the rescue operation. They utilized tranquilizer guns, firing three shots at the leopard. The second shot rendered the leopard partially unconscious, while the third shot resulted in complete sedation, enabling its safe capture. The trapped family members were subsequently rescued unharmed. DFO Jagdish Chandra Gupta verified the incident. Further information is anticipated.

Officials reported that the leopard leaped from a terrace in Jagatpur village early morning, then entered the adjacent building, where it got locked in a room. Social media videos depicted people chasing the leopard and others fleeing in panic.

As per the Delhi Fire Service, they received information about the incident at approximately 6.20 am and dispatched two fire tenders to the scene. “With the help of the locals, the officials locked the leopard in a room. The injured were sent to a hospital,” Delhi Fire Service (DFS) chief Atul Garg said.

According to a resident, the leopard was initially sighted at approximately 4.30 am, and a PCR call was placed by 5.15 am. It attempted to attack more than a dozen individuals, resulting in injuries to some of them.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) M K Meena stated that a report of the leopard entering a house in Jagatpur village was received, prompting the local police to arrive at the scene and notify forest department officials.

Police reported that five individuals sustained injuries in the leopard attack, with three of them identified as Mahender, Akash, and Rampal.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) stated that seven forest department personnel, a Delhi Fire Department team, and local police are currently on-site.

A local resident mentioned that the village is encircled by jungle, yet lacks any form of fencing or security measures.

Earlier this year in Malegaon, Maharashtra, a startling event unfolded as a leopard ventured into a room while a child was preoccupied with a phone. The quick-thinking boy calmly closed the door and left the room. Subsequently, rescue teams were dispatched to capture the animal. Authorities effectively tranquilized the leopard, safely containing it in a cage.

This incident was widely shared on social media.
