Ex-Bihar Chief Minister and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav celebrated his 78th birthday on Wednesday, June 11, with grandeur, with workers, family, and well-wishers of the party all over the state commemorating the day.

In viral social media videos, Lalu Yadav is spotted slicing a huge 78-kg laddoo cake with a ceremonial sword surrounded by family members including his daughter Misa Bharti and son, Opposition Leader Tejashwi Yadav. His party workers presented him with the sword, giving the celebration a symbolic touch of strength and merriment.

In addition to the laddoo cake, Lalu also sliced another cake in the form of the number “78.” His house in Patna became a center of activity, with party workers treating the occasion like a festival. New Delhi: Ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, the Janata Dal United is reportedly considering fielding Aishwarya Rai—estranged daughter-in-law of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family—against a key member of the Yadav clan. If this plan materialises, it could set the stage for one of the most high-stakes electoral battles of the 2025 polls.

Sources within the JDU indicate that the party is seriously weighing the option of giving a ticket to Aishwarya Rai, the former wife of Tej Pratap Yadav, Lalu Yadav’s elder son. The decision is being viewed as both symbolic and strategic, aimed at challenging the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on its home turf by capitalising on the highly publicised rift between Aishwarya and the Yadav family.

While the party has not yet officially disclosed the constituency, insiders suggest she could be fielded from a seat traditionally dominated by the Yadavs—possibly even against Tejashwi Yadav or another senior RJD leader. Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Saturday refuted Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s ‘prediction’ that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government at the Centre would ‘fall by August.’

Paswan remarked, “Their (RJD) cadre could not prepare even in 10 years,” referring to the two terms of the PM Modi-led government from 2014 to 2024.

The former Bihar Chief Minister and president of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) asserted that Lalu Prasad Yadav was merely trying to keep RJD workers ‘occupied.’

“On behalf of the NDA, I can say that the strength of our government under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi will be maintained for the next five years and many strong and bold decisions will be taken. These will be supported by all parties of the NDA,” he asserted.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Prime Minister’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the largest member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), secured its third consecutive government at the Centre. However, unlike its first two terms, where it held 282 and 303 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the BJP now has 240 Members of Parliament (MPs), 32 seats short of the majority. Despite this, the NDA collectively has 293 Lok Sabha MPs, comfortably surpassing the majority mark.

Paswan’s LJP (Ram Vilas), a Bihar-based member of the BJP-led coalition, won all five seats it contested in the state.

Conversely, the Congress-led opposition INDIA bloc, which includes the RJD, delivered a surprisingly strong performance, securing 234 seats. The Congress itself won 99 seats, a significant increase from the 44 seats in 2014 and 52 seats in 2019, making it the largest opposition party in the Lower House of Parliament and second only to the BJP.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad on Saturday, reminisced about the 1975-77 Emergency. He noted that although then-prime minister Indira Gandhi had imprisoned many leaders, she never abused them.

In a post on X, the RJD chief shared his article, “The Sangh Silence in 1975,” co-written with journalist Nalin Verma.

“I was the convener of the steering committee that Jayaprakash Narayan—had constituted to carry forward the movement against the excesses of Emergency imposed by the then PM Indira Gandhi. I was in jail under the Maintenance of Security Act (MISA) for over 15 months,” Lalu Prasad wrote in the post.

He added: “My colleagues and I did not know many of the BJP ministers speaking about the Emergency today. We hadn’t heard of Modi, J P Nadda and some of the PM’s other ministerial colleagues who today lecture us on the value of freedom.”

The former Bihar CM also remarked that while Indira Gandhi imprisoned many Opposition leaders of that era, she never mistreated them.

“Indira Gandhi put many of us behind bars, but she never abused us. Neither she nor her ministers called us “anti-national” or “unpatriotic”. She never enabled vandals to defile the memory of Babasaheb Ambedkar—the architect of our Constitution. 1975 is a stain on our democracy, but let’s not forget who doesn’t respect the Opposition in 2024,” he added.

On June 25, 1975, former prime minister Indira Gandhi declared a 21-month state of emergency, which ended on March 21, 1977. In the following general elections, Indira Gandhi was ousted from power, and the Janata Party assumed office. Both Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi lost their seats in Raebareli and Amethi, respectively.

However, the coalition of various parties disintegrated in 1979, and the Congress regained power by winning 353 seats in the subsequent general elections. Indira Gandhi returned as prime minister and held the position until her assassination in 1984.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to “those who lost their loved ones” after a collision between a goods train and the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express near Rangapani station in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district resulted in at least 15 deaths and around 60 injuries.

According to railway officials, the impact of the collision caused three rear compartments of the Kanchanjunga Express to derail.

“The railway accident in West Bengal is saddening. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to officials and took stock of the situation. Rescue operations are underway to assist the affected. The Railways Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw Ji is on the way to the site of the mishap as well,” PM Modi posted on X.

The Prime Minister’s office announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the next of kin of each deceased in the accident, with ₹50,000 to be given to the injured.

Rescue operations are ongoing at the site, approximately 30 km from North Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri station, with the injured being transported to nearby hospitals.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw posted on X: “Unfortunate accident in NFR zone. Rescue operations going on at war footing. Railways, NDRF and SDRF are working in close coordination. Injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached the site.”

The divisional railway manager (DRM) of North Frontier Railway’s Katihar division reported that the 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah when the accident occurred around 9 am.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her shock on X, saying, “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, and medical assistance. Action on war-footing initiated.”

A passenger from Agartala in coach S6 of the Kanchanjunga Express recounted feeling a sudden jerk and the compartment coming to a halt. He reported delays in the relief and rescue operations. “My wife, child and I somehow managed to come out of the mangled coach. We are currently stranded… The rescue operations also started quite late,” he told a television channel.

BJP Files Complaint Against Lalu Yadav for Alleged MCC Violation

The Bharatiya Janata Party has filed a complaint against Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, accusing him of violating the Model Code of Conduct(MCC) while casting his vote in Bihar on Saturday. Bihar has 40 Lok Sabha seats, all of which went to polls in seven phases.

In a complaint submitted to the Election Commission of India ECI, SD Sanjay, president of the BJP’s state legal cell, alleged that Yadav breached the rules by carrying a green towel emblazoned with his party’s symbol. “Lalu Prasad Yadav, along with his wife Rabri Devi and daughter Rohini Acharya, went to the polling booth at the veterinary college ground in Patna. During this time, the RJD chief was carrying a green towel displaying his party symbol, a lantern. Such an act amounts to a violation of the model code of conduct as he was encouraging people to vote for his party,” Sanjay stated.

Sanjay further mentioned that he has requested the ECI to take action against Yadav and has sought an FIR to be filed in this matter.

Assam CM Biswa Slams RJD Chief Lalu For Advocating “Complete Reservation For Muslims”

Speaking at a public rally in Raghunathpur, Siwan, on Saturday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma opposed the notion of granting reservations to Muslims. He criticized RJD chief Lalu Yadav for advocating “complete reservation for Muslims” and suggested that Yadav should move to Pakistan if he wants to advocate for reservations based on religion. Sarma emphasized that reservations will not be granted on religious grounds.

“Few days back I saw the statement of Lalu Yadav, where he said that ‘Muslims should get reservations’. Do Hindus don’t deserve to get reservations? Babasaheb Ambedkar gave us the Constitution. In the Constitution, it is mentioned that SC, ST, and OBC should get reservations. There will be no reservations on the basis of religion. I want to say this, Lalu Yadav, if you want to give reservations to Muslims, then I will buy you the tickets to Pakistan, go to Pakistan and then give reservations there. It will never happen in India. There is no law on this. Yeh Sapna bhi aap mat dekho (don’t dream of this),” Assam CM said.

Drawing from instances in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the Assam CM claimed that such initiatives were detrimental to other backward classes.

“Karnataka’s decision to grant reservations to Muslims was done after robbing the reservations of Backward classes,” he said.

The Assam CM emphasized that for the Bharatiya Janata Party to fully integrate the entire Jammu and Kashmir into India, they would require 400 seats in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

“One part of Kashmir is in Pakistan. Give 400 seats to Modi ji and we will get Kashmir from Pakistan. We closed 700 madrassas in Assam and no one raised their voice against it. Why? Because this is a new India…Aaj mullah banane ka dukaan khulne nahi dunga. Doctor , engineer, banane ka kaam karunga…We need 400 seats so that we can bring the Uniform Civil Code, construct the Krishna Janambhoomi temple, construct the Gyanvapi temple and stop reservation to Muslims. That’s why we need 400 seats,” he said.

On May 7, former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav voiced his support for the reservation for Muslims, asserting that they should receive this allocation. Speaking to reporters, the former CM stated, “Muslims should get reservations (reservation toh milna chahiye Musalmano ko, pura’…).”

The 40 seats in Bihar are undergoing polling across all seven phases. In the 2019 elections, the BJP-led NDA secured a landslide victory in the state, clinching 39 out of 40 seats, while the Congress managed to win just one seat. Despite being a dominant force in Bihar, the RJD failed to secure any seats.

The Mahagathbandhan, the opposition coalition in Bihar comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and Left parties, recently announced that the RJD, its largest constituent, will contest 26 out of the state’s 40 Lok Sabha seats. As part of the NDA, the BJP and JD(U) will contest on 17 and 16 seats, respectively.

Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will be contesting in five seats, while Jitan Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha will each contest one seat.

The polling in Siwan is scheduled for the sixth phase of the elections on May 25. Vote counting will take place on June 4.

“Reservation is Not Religion Based…”: Lalu Prasad Yadav After PM Modi Intensifies Attack on INDIA bloc

In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s accusations that the INDIA bloc aims to shift reservation from backward communities to Muslims, former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav clarified that reservation is based on social backwardness, not religion.

He asserted his role in implementing the Mandal Commission, emphasizing its social basis. Yadav expressed confidence in the INDIA bloc’s electoral prospects, predicting BJP’s failure to secure even 200 seats.

Accusing the BJP of opposing reservations for backward and Dalit communities, Yadav’s remarks were prompted by PM Modi’s allegation that the INDIA bloc seeks to allocate all reservation to Muslims. PM Modi cited Yadav’s earlier statement advocating reservation for Muslims, portraying it as a plot to deprive SC, ST, and OBCs of their reservation rights.

Earlier, Lalu Yadav had advocated for Muslim reservation. Bihar, contributing 40 Lok Sabha members, is witnessing polling across seven phases. Currently, the third phase includes voting for five seats: Jhanjharpur, Supaul, Araria, Madhepura, and Khagaria. In the 2019 elections, the BJP-led NDA dominated Bihar, winning 39 of 40 seats.

Lalu Yadav Warns BJP: Hands Off Constitution or Face Public Fury!

In the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Yadav accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP with attempting to alter the Constitution, cautioning that any efforts to change the Constitution would be met with severe backlash from the public.

In a statement to ANI, the RJD leader asserted that the BJP is in a state of fear, having conceded their defeat. “They are quite terrified and they have accepted that they will lose the elections. They are talking about 400 paar out of anxiety. And their leaders are continuously saying that they will change the Constitution. The Constitution was formed by Baba Saheb and not some random Baba. Whoever will try to change the Constitution, people will gouge out their eyes.”

Lalu Prasad Yadav criticized the BJP, stating that the nation would not accept changes to the Constitution and accused the BJP of moving towards dictatorship “The citizens of the country will not forgive them, they will not tolerate this. They are saying out of fear that they want to bring their rule, their dictatorship, in the country. Changing the Constitution means changing democracy… They are making their way towards dictatorship from democracy.”

Regarding the NDA securing a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Lalu Prasad stated there is no chance of it happening. “There is no possibility of getting a majority and they will not be able to change the Constitution. They are asking for a majority. The BJP, PM Narendra Modi should remember the past when Mohan Bhagwat asked to review the reservation and the citizens of the country didn’t accept it. The same thing is going to happen with them.”

When questioned about PM Narendra Modi’s silence on the issue of changing the Constitution, despite other ministers speaking on it, Yadav criticized the Prime Minister for not acting against those ministers. “If he is not saying but his ministers are saying, then why is he not taking any action… They are asking for a majority… The country now knows them and their leaders. And people are not going to repeat the same mistake again.”

Rohini Acharya, daughter of Lalu Prasad Yadav, criticized BJP’s Sankalp Patra, stating that the manifesto fails to address issues of inflation and unemployment.

“They should raise the issues of the people. The issue of employment and inflation has disappeared from the BJP’s manifesto. They are only targeting Lalu Prasad’s family. They made false promises of providing employment to two crore people, they did nothing on inflation in the past 10 years. Unemployment has increased so much… They should come in front of the people and tell them why they were not able to fulfill the promises. Who has stopped them from fulfilling the promises? People have decided to change the government…”

Bihar is set to conduct polling for its 40 Lok Sabha seats in seven phases. The first phase will see four seats up for election on May 19.

Targeting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his refusal to step down on “moral grounds” following a court’s decision to send him to judicial custody in an alleged money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sudhanshu Trivedi referenced the instance of former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav resigning before his incarceration.

“Lalu Prasad Yadav had at least resigned when he was about to go to jail, but he has not resigned yet,” Trivedi remarked during a press conference today. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is part of the INDIA bloc, in which Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) is also a partner.

Criticizing opposition parties that have labeled Kejriwal’s arrest as a political conspiracy by the BJP, Trivedi remarked, “Those who try to portray the bogey of victimhood, I would like to underline that today’s judgement of the court is based on concrete evidence of which neither we nor anyone else is privy.”

“It is the jurisprudence of the court that has decided to extend this judicial custody for 15 days. Now it raises certain moral and constitutional questions,” the senior BJP MP said as the Rouse Avenue Court sent Kejriwal to judicial custody till April 15 today.

Referring to Kejriwal’s mentor, Anna Hazare, Trivedi said, “His guru had vowed not to enter into politics. But the student not only entered politics but also became the Chief Minister.”

“Yesterday, there was another rally where he changed his ‘Guru’. His guru became Lalu Prasad Yadav,” Trivedi said, taking a dig at the INDIA bloc meeting held on Sunday.
The senior BJP MP further said, “There are media reports that Arvind Kejriwal has mentioned that the prime accused Vijay Nair used to report to Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj.”

Trivedi noted that the AAP involvement in the liquor policy case is becoming apparent, and it remains to be seen what course of action he takes regarding his Chief Ministership.

“The Delhi Government’s situation over liquor policy is becoming clearer and clearer. It has to be seen if Kejriwal resigns or heads towards a new politics,” the BJP leader said.

The AAP has reiterated that Kejriwal will continue to govern Delhi, maintaining his position even during his time in jail.

Union minister Smriti Irani strongly criticized RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and the opposition’s Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc for their “parivaarvad” (dynasty) remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at the ‘Namo Yuva Maha Sammelan’ in Nagpur, Irani declared that the 140 crore people of India are Modi’s family, and no one can harm the “Pradhan Sevak” (PM Modi).

She asserted, “…By being ‘pradhan sevak,’ he (PM Modi) worked for the family ‘India’…The fodder thief of INDI alliance said that he (PM Modi) has no family, I want to tell him that, we are ‘Modi’s parivaar,’ these youths are ‘Modi’s parivaar’…nobody will be able to touch even a hair of that person whose family are 140 crore people of India.”

Irani also challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to debate the differences between the 10 years of UPA rule and the Narendra Modi-led union government. She claimed that Rahul Gandhi wouldn’t be able to face even an ordinary BJP worker and guaranteed that he would lose the strength to speak in front of them.

Irani’s remarks came after Lalu Prasad Yadav questioned PM Modi’s Hindu credentials and mocked him for not having a family. PM Modi responded by emphasizing his commitment to non-nepotism and opposing dynastic rule. The BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Smriti Irani, and Anurag Thakur, added “Modi ka parivar” (Modi’s family) to their social media handles.

CBI requests time to file reply on plea of Lalu and others in alleged land-for-jobs case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has requested additional time to respond to applications from Lalu Prasad Yadav and others who are seeking access to documents related to the alleged land-for-jobs case. The CBI’s counsel stated that the previous investigating officer has been transferred, necessitating the need for more time. In response to this, CBI Special Judge Vivek Gogne has scheduled the matter for January 15 and instructed both investigating officers to appear before the court. The court emphasized the need for expeditious proceedings due to a directive from the Delhi High Court and declared that no further adjournments would be granted.

On December 20, 2023, the Rouse Avenue court had sought a response from the CBI regarding an application filed by accused individuals, including Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi, and Tejaswi Yadav, seeking access to documents filed along with the charge sheet in the land-for-jobs scam. Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi, and Tejaswi Yadav are accused in this case, which is currently in the document scrutiny stage following the filing of the charge sheet.

On October 4, the court granted bail to former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, Rabri Devi, and others in relation to a new chargesheet in an alleged land-for-job scam case. The CBI, presenting this as the second chargesheet in the Designated Court, outlined allegations against 17 individuals, including the former Union Minister of Railways, his family members, and others, related to the land-for-job scam.

The CBI initiated a case on May 18, 2022, against the former Union Minister of Railways and others, accusing them of obtaining pecuniary advantages through the transfer of landed property in exchange for appointments in Group “D” posts in different Railway Zones. The investigation revealed a scheme where the minister conspired with associates and family members to acquire land parcels by offering railway employment to individuals who subsequently sold or gifted their land to the minister’s family. The CBI alleges irregularities in the appointment process, with appointees from Patna being selected for positions in different Railways without public notices.

During searches conducted in Delhi and Bihar, the CBI found evidence supporting these allegations. The investigation further uncovered a scheme where candidates were initially engaged as substitutes and later regularized, all orchestrated to facilitate the acquisition of land. The accused allegedly purchased land parcels through a private company at a significantly lower cost than the market value, transferring them to the minister’s wife and son. The court was informed that an earlier chargesheet had been filed on October 7, 2022, against 16 accused, and the investigation is ongoing.

Land-for-job case: Regular bail is granted to Lalu, Tejashwi, and Rabri Yadav

On Wednesday, the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court granted bail to several individuals in connection with a new chargesheet in the alleged land-for-jobs scam case, including former railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Rabri Devi, and others. While granting bail, Special Judge Geetanjali Goel noted that the CBI had not made any arrests of the accused and had not even objected to their request for bail. The Court also ordered the CBI to serve copies of the updated chargesheet to each and every defendant in the case in the interim.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had earlier filed a chargesheet, and the court had taken notice of it and summoned each defendant. The CBI claims that in a case involving the “Land for Job Scam,” this is the second chargesheet filed in the Designated Court against 17 accused, including the former Union Minister of Railways, his wife, son, the GM of West Central Railways (WCR), two CPOs of WCR, as well as private individuals and a private company.

Tejashwi Yadav, the deputy chief minister of Bihar, and others are named in the chargesheet that the CBI recently filed in the Land for Job alleged scam case against former Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. On May 18, 2022, the CBI filed a case against the then-Union Minister of Railways and several other individuals, including his wife, two daughters, and unidentified public employees and private individuals.

Land for Job Scam: Sanctions against Lalu Prasad Yadav obtained, says CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) notified Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday that the Home Ministry sanctioned former Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in connection with a new chargesheet in the suspected Land for Job Scam case.

The CBI notified Special Judge Geetanjali Goel, through Special Public Prosecutor Advocate DP Singh, that the sanctions against Lalu Prasad had been secured from the Home Ministry, but the sanctions against the three former railway officers had still to be received.

CBI further stated that the remaining sanctions are expected to arrive within a week. Taking note of the submissions, the Court scheduled a hearing on September 21.
On the last date of the hearing, the CBI requested more time to acquire permission from the appropriate authorities to charge the former Railway Minister and three former

Railways employees in the alleged Land for Job scam. The CBI has filed a chargesheet in the Land for Job alleged scam case against Lalu Prasad, as well as Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and others.

According to the CBI, this is the second chargesheet filed in the Designated Court against 17 accused in a Land for Job Scam case, including the then-Union Minister of Railways, his wife, son, the then-GM of West Central Railways (WCR), two WCR CPOs, private individuals, and a private firm.

On May 18, 2022, the CBI filed a case against the then-Union Minister of Railways and 15 people, including his wife, two daughters, and unknown public workers and private individuals.

RJD leader Manoj Jha terms CBI chargesheet against Tejashwi, Rabri and Lalu “political vendetta”

A day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a supplementary chargesheet in connection with the alleged land-for-jobs scam, naming Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as an accused for the first time, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha called the action a “political vendetta.” In a major setback for the RJD, the CBI on monday filed the chargesheet against RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, his parents and former chief ministers Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi along with others in the land-for-jobs scam. “Such actions are taken because the BJP lost its government in Bihar. It is a political vendetta. Such actions by the central agencies … BJP is trying to do something which it cannot achieve,” Manoj Jha said.
“This is no more CBI. It is being directed by the two top leaders of BJP who run the Union government,” the Rajya Sabha MP further alleged.
Speaking on the same issue, senior JD(U) leader KC Tyagi alleged that the CBI’s move has come keeping in mind the unity of opposition parties.
“The timing (to file chargesheet) has been decided keeping in mind the unity of opposition parties. These investigative agencies were never misused like this earlier,” Tyagi said.
According to the CBI, irregular appointments of candidates were made in Central Railway, violating the laid down norms and procedures of Indian Railways for recruitment.
On March 15, the Court granted regular bail to ex-Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, ex-Bihar CM Rabri Devi, their daughter-RJD MP Misa Bharti and other accused in the land for jobs scam case.
According to the CBI, as a quid-pro-quo, the candidates directly or through their immediate relatives or family members sold land to the family members of Lalu Prasad Yadav (then Union Railway Minister) at highly discounted rates up to 1/4th to 1/5th of the prevailing market rates.
CBI further stated that investigation has revealed that Lalu Prasad Yadav during the period 2007-08 when he was Union Minister of Railways with the intent to acquire the land parcels situated in Patna villages- Mahuabagh and Kunjwa, wich were situated adjacent to the land parcels already owned by his family members; entered into a criminal conspiracy with his wife Rabri Devi, daughter Misha Bharati, Officers of Central Railways namely Sowmya Raghvan the then General Manager, Kamal Deep Mainrai, the then Chief Personnel Officer, and residents of Patna villages Mahjabagh, Bindaul and Bihta, and Patna City namely Raj Kumar Singh, Mithlesh Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Dharmendra Kumar, Vikas Kumar, Abhishek Kumar, Ravindra Ray, Kiran Devi, Akhileshwar Singh, Ramashish Singh. According to the CBI, all candidates who were hired as substitutes were later regularised.
In lieu of appointing them to the Railways, Lalu Prasad Yadav transferred the lands owned by the candidates and their family members into the names of his wife Rabri Devi and Misha Bharti for a much lower price than the prevailing circle rates and market rates.

Prior to Rahul Gandhi, these MPs and MLAs were disqualified for their convictions

Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader has been suspended from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a criminal defamation case, joining an illustrious list of members of Parliament and assemblies who have faced similar action in the past.

A person who was sentenced to two years or more in prison is disqualified “from the date of such conviction” and remains disqualified for another six years after serving time, according to the Representation of the People Act.

Here are some of the lawmakers who have been suspended following criminal convictions and sentences:

Lalu Prasad:

After his conviction in the fodder scam case in September 2013, the RJD supremo was disqualified from the Lok Sabha. He was the Member of Parliament from Saran in Bihar.

Jayalalithaa J:

J Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK supremo, was disqualified from the Tamil Nadu Assembly in September 2014 after being sentenced to four years in prison in a disproportionate assets case. She was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at the time of her disqualification, and she was forced to resign.

Mohammed Faizal, P.P.

P P Mohammed Faisal of the Nationalist Congress Party of Lakshadweep was automatically disqualified after being sentenced to ten years in prison in January 2023 in connection with an attempted murder case. The Kerala High Court, however, later suspended his conviction and sentence. The MP claims that the Lok Sabha Secretariat has yet to issue a notification reversing his disqualification.

Azam Khan:

Azam Khan, the leader of the Samajwadi Party was barred from running for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in October 2022 after a court sentenced him to three years in prison in a hate speech case in 2019. In the Assembly, he represented Rampur Sadar.

Anil Kumar Sahni:

Anil Kumar Sahni, an RJD MLA, was disqualified from the Bihar Assembly in October 2022 after being sentenced to three years in prison for fraud. He was elected to represent the Kurhani assembly seat.

He was found guilty of attempting to obtain travel allowance in 2012 by using forged Air India e-tickets without actually traveling. Sahni, a JD(U) Rajya Sabha MP at the time of the attempted fraud, had submitted Rs 23.71 lakh in claims.

Vikram Singh Saini:

After being sentenced to two years in prison in a 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots case, BJP MLA Vikram Singh Saini was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly with effect from October 2022. Saini was a Muzaffarnagar MLA from Khatauli.

Pradeep Chaudhary:

After being sentenced to three years in prison in an assault case, Congress MLA Pradeep Chaudhary was disqualified from the Haryana Assembly in January 2021. He was a Kalka legislator.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar:

Following his conviction in a rape case, Kuldeep Singh Sengar was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in February 2020. Sengar, who was elected from Unnao’s Bangarmau constituency, had previously been expelled by the BJP.

Abdullah Azam Khan:

Abdullah Azam Khan, a Samajwadi Party MLA, was disqualified from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in February 2023, just days after a court sentenced him to two years in prison in a 15-year-old case. In the Rampur district Assembly, he represented Suar.

The case against Abdullah Azam Khan, Azam Khan’s son, involved a highway dharna after his cavalcade was stopped by police for questioning following an attack on a CRPF camp in Rampur on December 31, 2007.

Anant Singh:

After being convicted in a case involving the recovery of arms and ammunition from his residence, RJD MLA Anant Singh was disqualified from the Bihar Assembly in July 2022. Singh was a Patna district MLA from Mokama.

ED finds Rs 600 cr in ‘proceeds of crime’ against Lalu Yadav and his family members

The Enforcement Directorate reported on Saturday that raids against the family of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in connection with the investigation into the railways’ land-for-job money laundering case resulted in the seizure of Rs 1 crore in unaccounted cash and the discovery of Rs 600 crore in criminal proceeds.

The ED stated that a probe was being conducted to find out more about the real estate and other investments made on behalf of Lalu Prasad’s family. On Friday, the ED searched at least 24 locations throughout the country that were reportedly connected to Lalu Prasad, his son and deputy chief minister Tejaswi Yadav, and three daughters.

The “scam” concerns Lalu’s alleged abuse of authority to give out jobs in exchange for property plots that were transferred at nominal prices to the relatives of the RJD chairman during the time between 2004 and 2009 when he served as railway minister in the Congress-led UPA administration.

Around 1.5 kilogrammes of gold jewellery, 540 grammes of gold bullion, $1,900 in foreign currency, incriminating documents, and technological devices were all seized during the searches, according to the ED.

Following the former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and his wife Rabri Devi’s deposition by the CBI in its case related to the land-for-job scam, the ED conducted searches. Several individuals, particularly those from Lalu’s home state of Bihar, are said to have been recruited to Group D positions in various zones of the Indian Railways between 2004 and 2009, when Lalu served as railways minister.

Land-jobs scam: CBI starts questioning Lalu Prasad Yadav

In the wake of CBI officials reaching at the residence of Rabri Devi’s residence, on Tuesday, 7 March, the officers begins questioning former Union Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav, in connection with the land-job scam.

As per reports, the questioning is taking place in Pandara parak, the residence of his daughter, Misa Bharti, who’s a Rajya Sabha member. In a statement, the family of Yadav, said that they will be cooperating in the investigation.

However, Earlier, a CBI official revealed that the central agency had served the notice to Yadav a few days ago and is likely to question him soon.

The CBI official on Monday said that, “A few days ago, CBI had served notice to former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Yadav in connection with the land-for-job case. CBI is likely to question Lalu Yadav soon.”

Notably, the CBI officials reached the residence of former Bihar Chief Minister, Rabri Devi on Monday, 6 March, in Patna in connection with the alleged case. Last year in October, CBI had filed a chargesheet against the former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi, their daughter Misa Bharti along with 13 others in the alleged land-jobs scam case.

This is humiliating, says Kejriwal on CBI team at Rabri Devi’s residence

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal while remarking the CBI team’s visit at the former CM of Bihar, Rabri Devi’s residence said that it is “humiliating.” Kejriwal was speaking at the inauguration event of the Ashram flyover.

Wherein, referring to the visit of CBI at the Rabri Devi’s residence, he expressed that, “This is wrong, raids like these are humiliating.” Apart from this matter, Kejriwal also opened up about the letter written to PM Mod, he said, “It can be seen like that also. It is becoming a trend, that wherever there are Opposition governments, they won’t be allowed to function.

“They (BJP) use ED, CBI and Governor to trouble them. Democracy will go ahead only when everyone will work together, whoever has a government should be allowed to work there.”

Notably, on Monday, the CBI officials reached the residence of Rabri Devi to question the former CM of Bihar in connection with the land-job scam case. Meanwhile, in another news, Senior advocate, Kapil Sibal reacted to the incident as he pointed out the “fragile health,” of Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Sibal took to his twitter and wrote, “CBI heat on Lalu. We all know the fragile state of his health. To pressurise Tejasvi. The more the government does this more the people will turn against this government.”

Patna: CBI raids Rabri Devi’s residence

A team of CBI Officials on Monday, 6 March arrived at the residence of former CM of Bihar, Rabri Devi. The officails of the CBI is reportedly questioning Rabri Devi at her residence in Patna.

The former Chief Minister of the State is being questioned in connection with the alleged land-for-job ‘scam.’ As per initial reports, the officers of CBI were questioning Rabri Devi in connection with the India Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation scam case.

The case is related to alleged corruption in accepting land parcels gifted or sold to former railway minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family when he was the misnister of railways in between 2004 to 2009.

In February, Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi has issues a summons to former Union Railway Minister and RJD Chief, Lalu Prasad and his wife, Rabri Devi, daughter, Misa Bharti along with 13 others in connection with the aforesaid case.

In October 2022, the CBI has filed a charge sheet against Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi, Misa Bharti along with 13 others in connection with the alleged scam.

The charge sheet reads that during the investigation, it was revealed that the accused in the alleged scam along with former GM Central Railways and CPO, Central Railways engaged persons as substitutes in lieu of land either in their name or in the name of their close relatives.

Singapore: RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav undergoes kidney transplant surgery

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Monday said Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav had gone through a successful kidney transplant surgery in Singapore.

At Mount Elizabeth Hospital, the surgery was performed in Singapore.

Taking to Twitter, Tejashwi Yadav tweeted, “After the successful operation of my father’s kidney transplant, he was shifted from the operation theatre to ICU. Donar elder sister Rohini Acharya and the party national president are both healthy. Thank you for your prayers and good wishes.”

Meanwhile, Lalu Prasad’s daughter gave her kidney to her father and, before the transplant, Acharya tweeted and said, “Ready to rock and roll. We wish me good luck.”

Moreover, Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav said in November that Rohini’s kidney was found to be the best match for the RJD chief’s transplant.

Talking to the media, Deputy CM Yadav said, “The doctors wanted someone from the family to donate a kidney to my father. My sister Rohini’s kidney was the best match, so we went ahead with it.”

Earlier, doctors advised Lalu about a kidney transplant as he had been suffering from acute kidney complications for some time.

However, Rohini Acharya is the daughter of Lalu Prasad Yadan and Rabri Devi. Rohini is married to Rao Samresh Singh, who is an engineer by profession and lives in Singapore. The couple have two sons and a daughter.

Earlier in November, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini took to Twitter and informed everyone about donating her kidney to the RJD chief.

“My father brought me up and means everything to me. I will consider myself to be extremely fortunate to contribute a small part of my life to saving his,” Rohini tweeted.

‘Kejriwal is following Lalu Prasad Yadav’s ‘loot’ model’, says Anurag Thakur

Taking a dig at Aam Aadmi Party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister Anurag Thakur said the AAP government is following Lalu Prasad Yadav’s “loot” model.

Addressing a press conference Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday said, “Earlier, we saw ‘Chaara Ghotala’, now, there is a government, whose name is involved in not one but several corruptions. Arvind Kejriwal has presented a new model of corruption. Lalu Prasad Yadav’s ‘loot’ model is being followed by Kejriwal in Delhi.”

Firing a fresh salvo Union Minister said, if he brings all the documents of corruption then a truck would be needed.

“The AAP government is involved in liquor, education, and DTC bus scams. Now, they have even deprived laborers of their rights. If I have to bring all the documents of his corruption, I would need a truck I want to ask Arvind Kejriwal if he is even able to sleep properly at night,” Thakur said.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Thakur said, in the name of laborers Delhi government has “misallocated” funds into “fake” accounts.

Union Minister Thakur further stated, “If we look at the documents, it is very clear that they have allocated fake jobs to fake people with fake mobile numbers, some of them being traced in even Haryana and Andhra Pradesh. So, the money that was to be given to the laborers, was given to Arvind Kejriwal and his ‘friends’. They have robbed the laborers of their rights.”

Ahead of MCD elections Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur has exuded confidence that BJP will win the MCD elections.

“The corrupt Aam Adami party has many frauds, from the health minister who is in jail to the education minister trapped in liquor swindle; it is the party of liars,” Thakur said.

Moreover, Thakur further said, “Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has only three main agendas and these are alcohol, corruption, and fraud.”

However, on 4 December the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be held to the 250-ward and counting will take place on 7 December.

‘Muslims do not worship Goddess Lakshmi, are they not rich?’ says BJP MLA Paswan

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Bihar Lalan Paswan made a controversial statement about deities that has courted controversy.

On the statement of Paswan at Shermari Bazar in Bhagalpur people held a protest and burnt the effigy of the BJP MLA.

Meanwhile, Paswan an MLA from Pirpainti raised a question on Hindu beliefs on Lakshmi Puja on Diwali and argued with evidence to prove his stance.

“If we get wealth only by worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, then there would have been no billionaires and trillionaires among Muslims. Muslims do not worship Goddess Lakshmi, are they not rich? Muslims do not worship Goddess Saraswati. Are there no scholars among Muslims? Do not they become IAS or IPS?,” Paswan said.

Moreover, Paswan said, everything is people’s belief and it’s only people’s belief of “Atma and Paramatma”.

Paswan further said, “If you believe then it is a goddess, and if not then it is just a stone idol. It is up to us whether we believe in Gods and Goddesses or not. We have to think on a scientific basis to reach a logical conclusion. If you stop believing, then your intellectual capacity will increase.”

“It is believed that Bajrangbali is a deity with power and bestows strength. Muslims or Christians do not worship Bajrangbali. Are they not powerful? The day you stop believing, all these things will end,” Paswan stated.

However, Paswan came to light when he leaked a personal conversation with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Yadav.
